Five Pebbles is so funny. Shoutout to characters who learn to prioritize compassion but still have the same deep-rooted self-actualization and self-worth issues they always had. Shoutout to characters who use compassion as a bludgeon to hurt themselves with under the guise of self-sacrifice. Shoutout to the guilt that drives one to heap blame upon themself until they feel the only way to atone is through punishment. That’s just as much about inflicting misery upon yourself as it is about helping the person you hurt. Get therapy king.

I got my roommate to watch MHA with me. He's not really a shipper, and he doesn't like Bakugou, but even he looks at Deku and Bakugou like, "....They are way too gay."

The other day I was talking about how I (in the context of shipping) like to think of Deku as the oblivious one and the last one to figure it out and Bakugou as the one who is silently suffering/pining and he went, "That's just fucking canon."

There is a lot of focus put on Subaru's willingness to sacrifice himself for the people he cares about. What a lot less focus is put on is the fact that he isn't actually that big of an outlier when it comes to having a self-sacrificing attitude. Lots of characters in Re:Zero have people that they are willing to sacrifice anything to protect.

In fact, one of the best examples of this are the people closest to Subaru, the Emilia camp:

Beatrice would die for Subaru.

Rem would die for her sister or for Subaru.

Ram would die for her sister, and thought she likely would never admit it, she would put her life at risk for most, if not all, of the rest of the Emilia camp as well.

Garfiel would die for the Emilia camp, because he's the shield, and shields are meant to stop other people from getting hurt.

Otto would die for the Emilia camp, because they're the first people that aren't his family and beast that are actually close to him.

Emilia would die for Subaru, the Emilia camp, and most people that she knows, due to a combination of her kindness and all of the negative feelings she holds toward herself.

Everyone in the Emilia camp simultaneously cares for their friends so much and has too low of an opinion of themselves, making them all very willing to help each other even if it is at great personal cost to themselves.

#the Emilia camp is the best example but there are countless other characters who are would be motivated to sacrifice themselves #for the sake of those close to them #but people can sometimes disregard that #because we see most of the story from Subaru's perspective we get the most insight into what he thinks #one of the main recurring themes is re:zero is bonds and devotion #and a key questions regarding this theme is how much should a person be willing to sacrifice for in the name of those bonds and devotion #there is a whole loop in arc 6 which is just people sacrificing themselves #in the hopes that it buys the people who are left just a little more time #also the Emilia camp is cool and they care about each other and sometimes people seem to forget that #re:zero #rezero #beatrice #rem rezero #ram rezero #garfiel tinsel #otto suwen #emilia re:zero #subaru natsuki

Thinking about characters who cannot bear the weight of being loved, and must balance that weight against acts of overwhelming ‘goodness.’ Thinking about characters who set themselves on fire in the first days of spring, and think they are doing the world a favor by keeping others warm.

Thinking about self-sacrifice as a form of self-destruction.
