sometimes i imagine young elrond (relatively young, you know for elves) grieving the loss of his brother, trying to respect his decision to die a mortal death, really respecting his decision, but still feeling sour about it from time to time when everything becomes too much, sorta thinking you left me alone, why did you leave me alone and celebrian, galadriel, everybody around him is saying something along the lines everything happens for a reason and sure, elros becoming the first great king of numenor should be enough reason and elrond understands that? but it still makes his heart ache, but he lives on, he keeps an eye on his brother's line, protects the middle earth where it counts, and that's how it goes for a couple hundred years
and then there comes a human woman with a little boy, and sure there were many before. he kept an eye on his brother's descendants before, but this one is so small and his little feet take him all around rivendell where he somehow always manages to find trouble, and his eyes are the shade achingly similar to his brothers, and sometimes he calls him ada because he learned it from his other kids
and one day he's reading little estel a story (maybe a legend of an old king who rose to greatness before he faded away) and he looks at the child snoring away on his chest, a child that wouldnt be here had elros made a different choice
and he thinks. oh. that was the reason.

Do you guys ever think about how Boromir, Captain of Gondor, comes to Rivendell hoping to receive guidance on his and Faramir’s weird dream and to explain the plight of his people as they throw man after man at Sauron, and then:
1. The previously unknown heir to the throne of his country is at the council Boromir is speaking at, like the world’s smallest and most confusing surprise party.
2. And when Boromir does not immediately take to that heir, a hobbit stands up and yells a poem at him?
And everyone else kind of looks at Boromir like “you’re the problem here, buddy”???
Man must have been BAFFLED.

See one of my favorite Rivendell headcanons is that even though it's a wonderful, peaceful sanctuary, pretty much everyone there could be incredibly dangerous if they wanted to be. Like, let's think about who lives in that valley.
Elrond Peredhel, resident healer and eldritch crime against nature, self-explanatory
Glorfindel, slayer of balrogs, self-explanatory
Erestor, probably Feanorian, definitely dangerous
Old Feanorian diehards, all of whom are probably looking for an excuse to commit morally justified violence
Old Gondolindrim/Iathrim, who, despite what they might tell you, are exactly as dangerous as the Feanorians
Garthaglir the Library Orc, who absolutely remembers how to use the giant battleaxe he keeps behind his desk
A strange, shadowy figure roaming the valley who I'm *sure* isn't Maglor Feanorian, but who is nonetheless a terrifying singer
Elladan and Elrohir, who have spent the last several centuries becoming nightmare fuel for Sauron's forces
Arwen, eldritch, bites
Bilbo Baggins, not to be underestimated, can defeat a grown man with nothing more than his scathingly polite commentary
Dunedain visitors, vaguely feral, highly trained
Aragorn, very feral, highly trained
Lindir, not actually dangerous, but if you upset him you are going to have problems with everyone else on this list
I actually really like the idea that a lot of the people who live in Rivendell are inherently kind of dangerous, because it means that they're actively choosing peace and kindness for themselves and I love that.

It amazes me that in a world where oaths are so valued and taken so seriously, Elrond does not have the members of the Fellowship swear any oath. He only encourages them to stay with the Ring-bearer for as long as they will. Yet every single member remains true to the Quest in their own way. Everyone makes contributions that make its success possible. Not because of any oath. Sam is under no oath to follow Frodo to Mordor. Boromir is under no oath to lay down his life for Merry and Pippin. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are under no oath to follow the hobbits. But they do all these things anyway, because it is right, and because they love each other. Boromir repents for his actions toward Frodo not because he has broken a literal oath, but because he has broken his friend’s trust, and his actions were just plain wrong. Frodo has sworn no official oath, but made a vow of his own will, because he knows the task must be done by someone, and he is not forced to be the one; he chooses: “I will take the Ring.” Within the entire Fellowship is pure love and nobility and loyalty and that, rather than any oath, saves the world. From the beginning, Elrond knows this is the better option. He knows what Fëanor’s oath did to the world. He knows that there has to be another way. And it turns out there is.

elrond as a dad is a concept people don't use enough frankly. just. elrohir and elladan and arwen following their ada around like ducklings. as they grow they keep doing it and it's not uncommon to see three adult elves just shadowing their father whenever they're not off causing chaos.
then arwen leaves and aragorn all but drops on elrond's lap and he picks up on it and now its elrohir, elladan and estel making a line after him. estel gets left behind easily so elrond is in the habit of checking that he's got all his kids following him.
after, in valinor, elrond will sometimes falter, not hearing the familiar steps following his own. even after elrohir and elladan sail, he'll turn every so often and freeze, panicking for a moment because where are arwen and estel? when did he leave them behind? and as soon as that moment is over he's just feeling the loss of them all over again. the twins never say anything, never protest or even seem to notice the sudden stops. they just leave him time to compose himself until he's ready to keep walking.

Elendil and Narsil ◈ Aragorn II and Andúril
Forged in the First Age by Telchar of Nogrod, Narsil came to Elendil of Númenor in the Second Age, and was reforged as Andúril at Rivendell for Aragorn II at the end of the Third Age.

@lotr20 | Day 6 ↳ Healing: Aragorn in the Houses of Healing
Aragorn went first to Faramir, and then to the Lady Éowyn, and last to Merry. When he had looked on the faces of the sick and seen their hurts he sighed. 'Here I must put forth all such power and skill as is given to me,' he said. 'Would that Elrond were here, for he is the eldest of all our race, and has the greater power.'
