I want to take this opportunity to talk about short tail mutations in cats, with the Japanese Bobtail and Cymric as examples. Btw Cymric is just a longhaired Manx, so we're talking about the Manx gene here. The Manx mutation for short tails is notorious for the associated health complications, even including death. You see, the mutation works by eliminating some vertebra and that makes the tail shorter. Sometimes it eliminates too many vertebra. In any case, you should never breed tailless x tailless Manx. In contrast, the mutation that gives the Japanese breed its short tail seems to be harmless and devoid of negative side effects. There are probably more than these two that can cause short tails in cats - some harmless, some very dangerous. Anyway. Think twice before buying a Manx or one of the breeds derived from it, and carrying a potentially very dangerous mutation.

Kuro and Madara both seem like maine coons but Madara(and also Leo ) also give me calico vibes. Kuro also fits the norwegian forest cat.

Himeru is one of those freaky ass lanky oriental cats or a russian blue

Adonis is an egyptian mau or a siamese, Kaoru is an orange, Rei is a regular black cat but with weirdly shiny fur and Kouga is a cat who was raised by pitbulls and will not accept the reality that he’s not a pitbull

Keito is a regular european/domestic shorthair but with a weirdly green tint to it

I would say Mika is a khao manee due to the eyes but he is big eyed dark brown colored LaPerm( the specific image I have in mind is one of the pictures in The Cat Encyclopedia and I’m not even sure if it’s for that breed)

In the bustling city of Agrabah, Lucas and m/n had become inseparable. Their love had flourished and taken root, weaving a tapestry of passion and devotion that seemed to defy the constraints of time. Their secret meetings in the palace gardens had now become cherished traditions, a sacred place where they could share their dreams and fears without the judgment of the outside world.

One evening, as they strolled through the moonlit gardens, Lucas playfully plucked a flower from a nearby bush and tucked it behind the m/n's ear. "You look even more enchanting with this," he said, his eyes sparkling with affection. The m/n chuckled, his heart warmed by Lucas's charm. "And you look like a prince out of a fairy tale," he replied, admiration shining in his eyes.

Lucas smiled, his heart swelling with happiness. "You know, sometimes I feel like this is all a dream. That I'm just a street rat who stumbled upon a palace and found the most incredible person in the world," he confessed, his voice filled with sincerity. The m/n took Lucas's hand in his own, squeezing it gently. "You are so much more than that, Lucas. You are my world," he said, his voice soft and tender.

In that moment, they were interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching. Panic washed over them as they realized they were no longer alone. Quickly, they pulled away from each other, trying to compose themselves. To their surprise, it was the genie, Jackson, who had appeared before them, a knowing smile on his face. "Ah, young love. It's a beautiful sight to behold," he said, his voice warm and teasing.

Lucas felt a blush creep up his cheeks, but he couldn't deny the happiness that filled his heart. "You're not going to tell anyone, are you?" he asked, trying to sound playful despite his nerves. Jackson laughed, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Fear not, my dear master. Your secret is safe with me. I am here to grant your wishes, not to meddle in your love affairs," he replied, waving his hand theatrically.

M/n chuckled, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. "Thank you, Jackson. We appreciate your discretion," he said, his gaze lingering on Lucas, who smiled back at him. "Oh, it's my pleasure! You two make quite the enchanting pair," Jackson said, his tone sincere. "Now, if there's anything else you desire, just give me a shout. I'll be off, then!" With a theatrical bow, he disappeared into a puff of smoke.

As they watched the genie vanish, Lucas and m/n couldn't help but laugh. "He's something else, isn't he?" Lucas remarked, shaking his head in amusement. "He certainly is," m/n agreed, his heart filled with gratitude for the magical friend who had brought them together.

In the days that followed, Lucas and m/n continued to explore the depths of their love, finding joy in the simple moments they shared. They reveled in each other's presence, discovering new facets of their personalities with each passing day. Their love remained a secret, known only to the stars that watched over them and the genie who had inadvertently played a part in their love story.

Yet, as much as they cherished their stolen moments, they longed for a day when they could openly express their love for each other without fear of judgment or repercussions. In their hearts, they knew that their love was worth fighting for, that the world deserved to witness the magic they had found in each other's arms.

Is it me, or do domestic shorthair have a more defined "type" to them.

Technically, I know they are not a breed or even a mix and actually "randombred" is a better term. Also they can have unpredictable genetics due to unknown family history.

But, I seem to see they look very similar. Never really gaining a weird mutation very often to make them distinct, like fold ears or brachycephaly. With the exception of some land race breeds of course like Manx. Almost everyone I see looks the same, with only tiny variation. Unlike say, randonbred rabbits.

Wasn't the British shorthair more like domestics back in the day? Before persian genes made them more cobby and mildly brachycephalic. Also the American shorthair used to be too (but not persian influenced).

I know European shorthairs and Arabian maus were domestics before following a fixed trait breeding program and becoming breeds.

So yeah, I don't really know how random the traits are in specific areas. Colours yes, coats length too. But certainly not head or body type. I would expect a lot more. Unless those traits are rare outside breeds???

It's not just me that's noticed this, is it?

Honestly i think my cat genetics knowledge becomes regrettably lacking after colors and patterns.

But what i think is going on is that randombred cats are on fully continous scale, so the differences pale out. It's not like there's only a type A and a type B - every possible variation between them exists too.

For example i'd say our previous and our current cats got rather different profiles, look:

Neither is an extreme type, but Trapiti had a noticably longer muzzle and less concave profile. But also yeah, i could see this called 'pretty uniform', i'm probably just used to cats and their more subtle differences in built lol.

It’s a Modern & Cat Au???

So the group is Valerian, Caladin (my OC), Jiahui, and Sobeknesef.

The four of them are all University students- Sobeknesef is going to trade school and shares the apartment with three very burnt out Archeology/Anthropology students.

And then there’s their cat counterparts (which is hilarious because this was just me comparing Cal to a cat once)

Cat!Caladin is a stray Arabian Mau- whom got randomly picked up by Valerian and Cat!Valerian. He’s very confused in general.

And within the span of a week or so, Valerian manages to get his hands on Cat!Jiahui and Cat!Sobeknesef as well. Which is funny, because he didn’t tell him roommates or that he named the cats after all of them.

Cat!Jiahui was adopted after she was dropped off at a shelter because she had an amputation and her family couldn’t care for her.

I’m unsure if Cat!Sobeknesef also has a missing limb like his human counterpart.

It’s generally a crack Au- Caladin and Valerian are rock lickers- Cal jumps out of windows, Sobeknesef has a group chat about him dedicated to catching pictures of him smiling.

They’re just little guys :3

It doesn’t have as much of a plot line as the project itself, but it’s a cute Au that we all still dabble in occasionally.

Notes:

If a breed is listed under a different name I noted it, unless it's a very similar name (Scottish Straight = Scottish Shorthair etc.).

I am not super good at distinguishing variants like European and American burmeses, so I put those that were just labeled "burmese" under unspecified. The same for Bombays and Maine Cats).

Breeds' long- and shorthair versions are listed seperately. However I didn't look up every single standard, just each index, and with some breeds it was not specified if they're recognized as longhaired, shorthaired or both. I've listed those as the most common variant. The same goes for ear types, fur types etc. (I might go through all of the standards some other time)

There are some breeds on here that are considered extinct or dormant but since some organisations still have their standard I've listed them. They're marked with an asterisk.

Words in quotation marks are the words I use if there's no official term for something.

Regarding my last last-

Oh, that's right it might work a bit differently where you live! I feel like shelters in the US are more like trying to get animals good homes as fast as possible and will work with you. But even if it works differently I don't think there is any harm in asking! Worst case they just say no, best case youre able to work together! I would just tell them at the very beginning any details of feeling important :)

yeaa, weirdly here there's almost a cat/dog shortage (well it's gone up since people gave up their covid pets. freaks) but they're also pretty strict here as to what homes they go to ;o; understandably, but seems like you need a huge house with a huge garden which is just not realistic in the UK most of the time

in order to 'meet demand' a lot of stray animals actually get imported from southern europe, northern africa and the middle east. Lots of rescues here are arabian maus n greek cats
