me and my brother trying to explain to a guy from libya on the luas that the reason there’s a stop called fatima is because there was a social housing project called the fatima mansions built there in the thirties that have since been demolished and replaced with the herberton apartments and those were probably named after our lady of fatima which is a way to refer to the virgin mary because during ww1 in fatima, portugal mary appeared to three kids a couple of times and told them secrets and things and everyone was like ‘yeah sure’ and the kids were like ‘be here on this day and you’ll see’ and then the sun did some weird stuff but most people kind of think that if you stare at the sun and you start seeing weird stuff that’s probably not a miracle it’s just what happens when you stare directly at the sun for a while but it was declared a miracle worthy of belief in the 30’s and the reason there’s a place in portugual called fatima is probably because there was a big chunk of history where the iberian peninsula was mostly under muslim control from the 8th century to the 15th and that is why there is a random tram stop in dublin with an arabic name probably

I speak english well enough to be understood, but I dont think i'm that good at it compared to my frech.

My favourite language learning app for building vocabulary.
Drops has helped me to build my irish vocabulary because of the extensive catagories to choose from i can learn what I want to learn. I also find it helpful because in the free version you can only do five minutes a day. I find that for me it keeps me motivated and makes me pay more attention to the words as occasionally you will have to spell them. I personally find the app helpful for adding vocabulary to my knowledge but it does lack grammar and actual sentences.
Theres many different languages on drops and these are:
ainu, arabic, ASL, bosnian, catalan, chinese (cantonese), chinese (mandarin), croatian, danish, dutch, british and american english,
Esperanto, estonian, finnish, french, galician, german, greek, hawaiian, hindi,
hungarian, icelandic, igbo, indonesian, irish, italian, japanese, korean, norweigan,
persian, polish, brazilian portugues, european portugues, romanian, russian,
samoan, sanskrit, serbian, european spanish, mexican spanish, swahili,
swedish, tagalog, te reo maōri, thai, turkish, ukrainian, vietnamese, yoruba

mar 1 2021 // day 54 of 100 days of productivity hoje está chovendo e eu sinto um pouquinho inquieta, sem capacidade de concentrar-me. dito isso, ao menos a gente tem um novo challenge e tal vez me pode distrair!
zoomester studyblr challenge, day 1
introduce yourself! What’s some basic info you’d like to share about yourself? Also! What are you studying? (If you’re in college, what’s your major? which semester are you in?) hello hello! I'm Isabel and I'm in my last semester of undergrad (!!!) studying linguistics and spanish. in my "free time" (who even is she) catch me baking or painting or studying arabic or obsessively checking gradcafe. this semester I'm also in the full throes of a thesis project on language acquisition, so I was thrilled to see@progressaesthetics starting this challenge 💕 looking forward to getting to know the community better!

The Umayyad Caliphate and Jews! I think I found a new ship to overdo- (ps: nope , did more research)
The little one is Al-Andalus, or Spain/Portugual under the Arabic Rule! During that period the Iberian Peninsula was greatly influenced by Arabic culture and in it, Jews also flourished!
The Umayyad Caliphate was a golden period for Arabs! they invented and found out a lot of things about algebra, science, astronomy, and even invented chess! That's why they are now my favorite : D

has anyone got a list of what languages batfam members can speak?
I know that in an interview the young justice (TV) show person gave which languages he thought Dick could speak which were “Robin speaks English, and can get by in French, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese, at least. (link)”
Obviously we know that he can do a sign language (link) in the comic but I don’t know whether they ever clarified whether it was ASL or another sign language (ASL seems logical though)
I know for Damian I reblogged a headcanon post on which languages he is best at (link) (which were English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Urdu). On panel he speaks Cantonese in the prelude to RRAG comics (the one that was like. at the end of a robin issue where he fights ghosts). He also says he can speak French and German in Batman Incorporated. He understand Spanish in Robin: Son of Batman #2 in the flashback scene ( he understands what oraculo is telling the kids when its in the < > brackets and earlier in teh comic they say thats spanish)
For Babs I think we see her speak French, Greek, and Chinese (writers did not say which Chinese language/dialect) when Savant is talking to her on the phone. in azrael 29 she says she took spanish in high school
I assume that Bruce specifically CANT speak Russian because in the KGBeast follow-up plot they made a point how everyone in Russia was interacting with him in English and they made sure to send Batman someone who spoke English, and I assume if he spoke Russian the writers wouldn’t have bothered doing that.
bruce speaks Japanese in Batman incorporated 2 and Spanish in 3, he speaks portugues (clipped but antiquated) in batman 472. he also speaks farsi in death in the family, however he’s doing so to get around lebanon, so it is possible the writers meant to have him speaking arabic and just didnt know what the official language of lebanon is.
Bruce speaks SPanish in ‘tec 404 and uses sign language in batman 222
I don’t know whyy I am focusing on this rn its just an intersection of two interests
EDIT: more for Dick ty!
illumiru said:
I think Dick at least has some knowledge in Tamaranean (enough to hack a computer at least), Farsi, German and Italian as well but im not sure on what level of fluency he is there.
dick has contradictory information on whether he can speak japanese or not (nightwing 125 says he can’t, I have heard but not read that a Titans annual says he can). he does speak russian in the first issues of grayson. In robin 175 he speaks Farsi. he also uses ASL to understand Joey and knew it before meeting him
dick: says he can speak german in jla 2006 #44.. In Batman 706, Dick can’t read which sign in chinatown is a butcher’s shop, and kitrinia says “So batman doesn’t know chinese?”
azrael speaks Spanish in Shadow of the Bat #24, but does not remember ever speaking Spanish and thinks he was programmed with it by the system
EDIT EDIT: adding my own non-batfam notes for my own future reference im just gonna keep track of things here
Dinah Lance (Black Canary) speaks japanese in black canary 2007 #1. she speaks cantonese in birds of prey 82
Ted Grand (wildcat) understands Spanish in Infinity Inc 25
mari mccabe (vixen) Swahili (suicide squad 24)
Floyd Lawton (Deadshot) and Nemesis both speak Russian in Suicide Squad #5. Enchantress, Penguin, Nightshade, and Rick Flag specifically do not speak Russian
superman (clark kent): Mandarin Chinese (talking to Kenan), japanese (action comics 760, COIE 4) russian (superman 1987 53 AND adventures of superman #599) . in superman 54 he says 1 thing in german and then thinks “That pretty much exhausts my german”. superman says 1 line of spanish in action comics 668 without clarifying how much he speaks. he also seems to understand a phonecall in Spanish lois has in superman: the man of steel #3. superman speaks and reads spanish in adventures of superman 610 superman seems to not be able to speak french but may have amnesia. he doesnt know his name but does know dinosaur names, possibly indicating he has some skills. (action comics 671 ). superman has a conversation in arabic (adventures of superman 619)
lois lane speaks spanish (superman: the man of steel #3)
raven speaks portuguesed (the new titans annual #5)
tim understands only a little cantonese (robin 176). tim speaks spanish (red robin #1) presumably some german but not fluently in red robin 3 (mistakes "you have skill, little man. you amuse me" as "he just called me a clown baby")
barry allen speaks russian (the flash 1987 #19 - flashback)
zinda speaks pashto (birds of prey 112)
diana (wonder woman) speaks russian (wonder woman 1986 #25). ww 30 she speaks what the text refers to as “egyptian” i am going to assume egyptian arabic
wally does not speak russian, but does have a tranceiver hooked up to a ‘dome translation computer’ (the flash #7)
batman: bane of the demon: talia and ra’s speak dhari, urdu, farsi

Why is the guitar called violão in Portugal and Brazil?
The story as I know it:
Tar means string in Proto-Indo-European and Sanskrit. Instrument names like kithara and guitar have this word in it.
The kithara was a classical Greek large lyre.
Cithara is Latin for lyre, and in the renaissance it was used for lute, as well.
Words like citole/citula/cistern/gittern referred to medieval European wire-strung instruments derived from the classical Roman fretted instrument.
Cittern arose from this tradition by the 16th century. The 18th century English guittar was a cittern. It traveled to Portugual via sea trade and became the guitarra portuguesa. I I don't think it made it to the new world, though other citterns did, called mandola or bandola.
The guitarra latina and guitarra morisca (pictured) were medieval instruments of Spain, the former being the citole from the Roman Empire and the latter being the qanbus/gambus from the Moorish conquest of Andalusia.
The guitarra italiana was a 16th century lute with a longer neck. Lutes were ouds brought to Spain by Moors. Arabic "al'ud,' meaning "the wood" or "the fragrance" became laúd (Sp), luth (Fr), liuto (It), lute (En), etc.
The chitarrone of 17th century Italy, aka the theorbo, was literally a big chitarra (italiana). It was also used as a humanist symbol to replace the lyre or kithara of the classical Greek lyric poets. Thus, it is also symbolically a big kithara.
Todya's guitar took on its familiar waisted shape in 14th century Spain and France. Its rosette was Arabic, not like the citole's and gittern's, which were Gothic. To me this indicates its Moorish origin. Before that, I don't know, though I did find its tuning in an 11th century Persian oud treatise. That may be coincidence.
All Latin American guitars are derived from European ones. The Hawaiian ukulele that the Portuguese brought over, the cuatro venezolano and the Mexican jarana jarocha retain some of its old character from the 16th and 17th centuries.
These images are from the Cantigas de Santa Maria, a medieval Spanish songbook.
These are vihuelas. Left is a vihuela de arco (bowed viol) and right is a vihuela de peñola (plectrum viol).
Vihuelas in Spain and viols in Italy were played da gamba (held by the legs) by the 15th century. The viola da gamba survives as the double bass viol (the orchestral contrabass).
The violin family took shape in 16th century Italy: violin (small viola), viola, violoncello aka cello (little big-viola), violone (big viola). In the 16th and 17th century, violone was a broad name for any large bowed viola. The double bass that survives to the present is part of the viol family (viola da gamba), not the violin family (violin, viola, cello).
In 16th century Spain and Italy, a waisted, flat-backed instrument called the vihuela de mano/viola da mano was used as an alternative to the bowl-backed lute. In Spain the lute/oud had Islamic connotations, and the vihuela Christian ones.
Portuguese, and subsequently Brazilians, called our guitar the violão. That name comes from this medieval tradition.
So: the words guitar and viol have both been applied, across different languages, to the instrument family now commonly known as the guitar. But, the word guitar also historically applied to citterns, and still does in Portugal, and the word viol used to be applied to guitar-like instruments, and still does in Portugal and Brazil.
