you mentioned capicorns once and I’ve been thinking about it. Are they a species in hoofology? Is Penny one? (Or half capicorn??) How do they look like?? (If I remember in one of your post, Penny can outlive satyrs because she’s one?? Also a tadpole stage?? With so much siblings?.)
I apologize if this is a bit too much, it has been spinning in my head for a while.
They are !! The name Capricorn comes from the fact that they're a result of mixing between a goat satyr and a Siren (Sea-dwelling species)
- Naturally they're a semi-aquatic species meant to live in coastal areas- they hatch as tadpoles and eventually grow legs around age 5.
-All Capricorn came from a single brood of probably upwards of a thousand eggs. As such, Capricorn aren't really an established species- which made Penny feel like an outcast as a kid, since there wasn't anything recorded about her species at the time.
-Penny's [satyr] mom just had a one-night stand with the fish lady she met, so she didn't really expect to lay a ton of eggs afterwards and kinda panicked about it- so she just dumped them in a nearby river. As a result, a lot of Penny's brood was washed around to various parts of the world. [Sirens use other species as incubators for their eggs]
-Penny ended up hatching in a lake in Wales, where she spent her tadpole phase. When she hatched, she started hanging out on shore and wandering around the nearby woods. Someone from the nearby town eventually found her, mistook her for a lost/abandoned satyr kid, and took her to the local boarding school, where she was adopted by Agate :]
-Since Penny looks mostly like a satyr, she was treated as such and raised on a satyr diet. Meaning she was somewhat deficient in some essential nutrients and sick often as a kid, until someone figured out that Capricorn, being a carnivorous species, probably need a special diet. As an early 20 year old she's kinda skinny and small for her species </3
- Penny didn't know she had hundreds of siblings out there as a kid. She was actually very lonely growing up, so that came as a shock.
-Said brother (King) Runs a nightclub that doubles as a hub for his fellow capricorn- his goal being to reunite as many of his siblings as possible and establish them as an official species.
-Penny, who, up until this point, has felt like a complete misfit for not even knowing what species she is, latches onto them really hard. She ends up running the club with King and involving herself with her siblings pretty hard. Other siblings include Strawberry and Sweets :]
#mailbox#that's what i can say about them for now <3#hoofology#also yeah typical lifespan for a capricorn is ~400 years#and penny- being a ''royal''- for around 800

my Valentine’s Day love letter is for chytridiomycota :D the grandmother of every single fungi on the planet, the chytridiomycota is somehow unlike any other fungus in varying ways
such as its environment. chytridiomycota are largely aquatic, yet they’re one of the most common land parasites :D on the same topic, their spores are flagellated in order to literally swim through the water, which is unique almost entirely to them.
Chytrids are also one of the only fungi that reproduce oogamously relating them closer to LAND ANIMALS !!!! Than any aquatic creature or fungi.
This makes me believe that they actually had a hand in the creation of humans during evolution, since fungus and human genomes are so incredibly close to each other. It’s one of the most simple fungi but it’s so incredible to me :D 🖤🖤🖤

Mar 18: Thalissamare’s Vault
The stone door to this chamber can be opened by the key that Thalissamare wears around her neck. If a creature attempts to pick it, they trigger a magical trap: a beautiful voice issues from the door, and all non-merfolk within 20’ of the door must save or be charmed by Thalissamare for 24 hours. There is no immediate danger from this, but Thalissamare can tell by looking at a creature whether that creature is under this effect.
The vault, like the passage leading to it, is fully underwater with a 10’ ceiling. Stone shelves along the walls hold mostly clay and stone statuettes of mermaids, aquatic animals, and sea monsters (worth 1 gp each), but hidden among them is a figurine of wondrous power (agate shark) and two mother-of-pearl inlaid goblets worth 50 GP each. The larger statue in the middle of the room is of a male human. Its eyes are black pearls (500 g each) that can be prized out with a knife and a dungeon turn’s effort. In fact, it is a stone defender that will animate and attack if touched.

CC: Seahaven Kinship
SEAHAVEN KINSHIP
Under a deep-blue ocean, a village of amphibious hybrids called Seahaven Kinship makes their home in the coral reef. They are a creative community who value friendship and self-love, with a particular love for swimming and fishing. They worship the sea and its creatures, and look up to the mysterious goddess of the deep, Aquos.
Appearance:
Seahaven Kinship's members possess a mixture of cat and fish-like physical traits. Likely the most noteworthy are their aquatic tail, fins and webbed toes. Their water-resistant eyes are excellent for detecting prey and their sharp teeth for tearing through scales without pain. Additionally, their scales offer protection. They often come in natural colours blending in with their surroundings, even if its not uncommon to see unnatural colours. Seahaven have the ability to breathe underwater, thanks to their adapted lungs and gills.
Cultural Values:
The Kinship consider their strong sense of community to be one of their most cherished cultural values. They are a tight-knit group, with a deep sense of loyalty and respect for one another, valuing honesty, fairness and integrity. Additionally, they hold the protection of their environment and seas as a major priority, ensuring proper care to sustain and nurture life beneath the waves. Living safely surrounded with water, an attack on their homelands rattles the Seafolk greatly. Considered to be "lax" and "lazy" by other Kinships, Seafolk turn their attention from personal poweress to keeping their culture alive, spending their days creating poems, plays, and displaying art.
Common Food:
Fish: herring, mackerel, salmon, tuna
Crustaceans: shrimp, crab, lobster
Mollusks: squid, oyster, clam, mussel
Amphibians: frog, toad, newt
Seabirds: gull, cormorant, albatross, pelican
Common Trade:
Minerals: pearls, coral, seashells, salt for decoration
Precious Gemstones: amethyst, agate, amber, jade, quartz
Fruits and Vegetables: sea asparagus, seaweed, seaweed salad
Artisan Goods: baskets, ropes, woven traps, nets, fishing baits
Weapons and Tools: fish hooks, spears, knives
Camp:
Like an underwater village, the Seahaven Kinship are located near the coral reef. The dens are made up of seaweed, vines, coral rocks and oyster shells to decorate. There is no vintage points, with most Seafolk preferring to swim above and speak. In the center, a sandy clearing is where Seafolk gather. In a tunnel underneath a couple of rocks, the water dries out, giving way to a larger cave where all the prey are stored. The camp is surrounded by walls of coral and underwater rocks, to protect them from outside forces. A couple more network of tunnels are closely guarded, which protect their trade resources and history records.
Personal Decoration:
The most common Seafolk are known for wearing ornate pieces of jewelry, such as elaborate headpieces made of seashells or pearls, intricate beads, amulets, and armlets made of bi-coloured coral. Seafolk dye themselves with markings around their body, reflecting their connection to the goddess Aquos and their love for the sea, especially during Moon Market times when they are out of the water, or during times of war to show pride for their homeland.
Culturally, Seafolk Matriarchs have a woven crown that dates back generations ago, with unique jewelry located on top. Its passed down every Heritor which takes up leadership, and rumored to bring especial connection with Aquos if worn under the full moon.
Religion
Worshipping the goddess Aquos, whom they revere as the patron of the sea and its inhabitants, She is a figure of compassion and benevolence, who is believed to be the one responsible for nourishing and sustaining life beneath the waves. Aquos is ever present in the ocean and is watching over them at all times, protecting them from harm. They believe that the goddess favors those who show respect for her and the sea, and reward them with bountiful catches and peaceful, prosperous communities. They believe that the moon is her eye watching over them, and depending on how awake she is the waves are either stronger or weaker. How they treat the land is a show of respect towards her.
Afterlife is a complicated subject to Seafolk, but the most popular belief is one in which souls travel down below, and becomes eternally a jellyfish, becoming one with the sea and nurturing their Kinship from below. They believe that the worst punishment a moggy can endure is burial— after all, the sand is known to trap souls under, keeping them from reaching the joyful embrace of their goddess.
Holy days and festivals:
Seahaven Kinship observe the most annual holidays. Common celebrations include:
Spring Bloom: To celebrate the vibrant growth and rebirth of the corals and plants, the Seahaven Kinship hold a grand festival. They gather together and have grand feasts, games, and other festivities, all focused on the ocean and water as a thanks to Aquos. This holiday is traditionally held during the first bloom of fresh coral, usually around the season of spring.
Fish Race: When the first couple of warm days begin, Seafolk will be banned from fishing for the rest of the day to observe the frothing shores of the beaches as most of the fish return, migrating from warmer below and promising an excellent hunting season. Any attempts to hunt the fish are prohibited.
Aquos' Ascension: This festival marks the anniversary of the goddess Aquos' triumph over the Sun, and serves as a time to remind the Kinship when she brought water to the barren land. Rituals and ceremonies may include sacrifices, such as hunting a huge meal by the land and burn it, as a symbol of displeasure towards the opposing god, Helios, or only fish in coral where the moon is reflected.
Moon Festival: A festival of light, celebrating the moon and its connection to the sea. It is marked with traditional dances and music, and stories passed down through generations of the kin. Often celebrated during the New Moon, since their Goddess' eye is closed, its used a time to tell her they are still listening to her by telling all folklore and stories about Aquos. Its a special occasion, as Cadets are promoted, Veterans are waved goodbye, Historians come back from long journeys...
Courting, Bonding, and Marriage
The Seahaven Kinship are known to be the most romantic of the Mirthvale, as their courting process is often very slow, personal and thoughtful, taking place over the course of weeks or even months. Instead of keeping quiet and waiting for the affection to be confessed, the Seafolk begin sharing simple conversations and compliments, encouraging the bonding to continue and falling in love with each other. If they both feel as if they are ready to dwell into a romantic relationship, more intimate experiences are shared, such as swimming together, taking dips into hot waters, sleeping by the shores under the new moon, and giving a rarely-caught meal to the other. When its time to declare a full, committed relationship, the Seafolk couple will gather beach stones separately, carving them as hearts and later exchanging them in their marriage as necklaces.
Families, Parenting & Children:
In the Seafolks' families, the female is considered to be the leader of the Family, as she is the one to give birth to new cubs and stay with them through their first steps.
Mothers are seen as the caretakers and educators of the family, while fathers take on a more protective role, teaching their cubs all about self-defensive and the worst life can offer. All members of the family are considered to be an extension of the female ancestor, with the eldest daughter being seen as the next representative and leader. Thus, she is responsible for maintaining the family lineage and carrying out decisions, while the father assists and advises her.
The Seahaven don't have Dens organized into ranks, but rather paired with at least one Female member of the family. Males will usually move out once they have married, or when their sister has a new couple he is accepted to live with. However, there are exception to be made— Moggies of another orientation are allowed to make their own den.
Cubs are considered a personal family effort to raise, with the mother implementing all the values of tough love, respect, kindness, sharing, while the father is far more present during their life as Cadets, mentoring them through the harsh path of a Seafolk's teenagehood and instilling the pillars of a true Combatant or Mariner. Absent parents are believed to leave an unnecessary void in the Cadet's learning, and are heavily looked down upon. In that case, the cubs are taken in by a close family member.
Death + Burial
The body is first washed and cleaned, followed by dressing them in their accessories and jewelry they owned in life. After this, the body is placed in a crafted boat and taken out to sea. There, loved ones gather on the shoreline to offer prayers and pay their respects. Once the boat has been set adrift at sea, the Kinship gather again, singing songs and poetry about the life of the deceased. The body is eventually lost to the ocean current, and some believe that the goddess Aquos will carry them to rest in the depths of the ocean.

UPDATE: I HAVE FAILED TO NOT BUY THE ROCKS
A thumbnail specimen of amethyst from Mondo, Tanzania. Mondo amethyst features tons of cool iron inclusions , such as the thin black needles of goethite inside this one. The color is also phenomenal - in some places this piece is so dark purple that it almost looks blue!
A polished slab of Lake Superior Agate! (Surely I can find room to squeeze it onto my agate shelf somewhere...) This piece is awesome because it has PARALLAX!
See that flickering effect in the banding? That's parallax! It happens when an agate has very very thin layers of alternating opaque and translucent banding. We're seeing the bands cast shadows on each other!
Morganite beryl! This specimen is displaying a bunch of etching. Etching happens when certain acids or chemicals in the environment disrupt the crystal's growth, leading to all sorts of weird shapes. It also contains yellow pockets of clay that were trapped inside of it during its formation!
Tourmaline!! This piece is from Himalaya Tourmaline Mine, in California. This is an old stock specimen; Himalaya Mine hasn't produced crystals this large and perfectly shaped in a very long time. This piece features some beautiful tricoloration: pink, then white, then green (and wow, maybe more pink at the very top?) and best of all, a perfect three sided prism with a perfect termination.
I mean, look at that! That barely looks real, that's the platonic ideal of tourmaline's crystal habit.
Here's a cool fossil! These are two species of crinoid: scytalocrinus disparilis on the left, and halysiocrinus tunicatus on the right. Also called "Sea Lillies," these aquatic animals look like flowers growing out of the ocean floor. They're related to starfish!
Crinoid fossils are common throughout the American Midwest (these fellows came from the Edwardsville formation in Indiana) but they rarely look like this because their upper tentacles seldom fossilize. Usually it's just their stems, which can be found all over the place as little disks that look like beads or washers. Some people mistakenly call them "indian beads." They can also be found all over my house because I'll collect them out of the dirt and then forget I have them in my pockets. Anyway, it's very rare to see intact specimens like this!
Here's the best piece I got: tsavorite garnet! Tsavorite is known for its brilliant green color, which can be caused by impurities of chromium or vanadium. This piece came from Tanzania.
It's also the ONLY garnet species that fluoresces! Here it is under one of my UV lights. Isn't that incredible?!
And we're just... not gonna talk about the Rock Budget!!
Rock show today!
Gonna go look at Cool Rocks! Maybe not buy them. Rock budget's running a bit low. (This is wulfenite and roselite's fault.)
