Or at least, I've never come across a memory loss curse like this one in MDZS fanfics. In which Lan Wangji pines sadly for someone he can't remember, finding traces and eventually remembering a name. He can't help but search for his soulmate. It's a canon divergence story in more ways than one, with Chief Cultivator Lan Wangji but also Wen Qing and Wen Ning being alive and I really enjoyed the little hints about how this universe is different. The ending was extremely soft too. Excerpt: He aches to remember what Wei Wuxian looked like or the sound of his voice. He aches to reach out and touch those memories that hover ever frustratingly out of reach. For each fragment he unlocks, it feels like so many further missing pieces remain. Wangji speaks with the clan elders about visiting cultivators to Gusu Lan in the past. He speaks with his uncle about the classes his uncle taught: both those Wangji attended and those before and after. He speaks with the Juniors about their friends from different sects, and he travels to the Dafan Wen settlement and speaks with Wen Qing and her brother, Wen Ning. The siblings look at him as if he is not who they expect. Wen Ning’s gaze drifts to one side of Lan Wangji, as if he too is searching for someone missing. Someone who should be there.

It’s fucking coffee, of all things, that finally does it. Or, Buck buys Eddie's favorite brand of coffee for his loft, and Eddie's brain short-circuits, leading to a realization.

Fine buddie, 1.6k

Eddie’s foot feels heavy on the gas pedal, while his hands grip the steering wheel tightly, to prevent them from shaking. He’s driving almost on autopilot, while trying his best to compartmentalize and focus on just getting to the hospital, trying not to think about Buck- about what’s happening in the back of the ambulance right now. Or, after the drive to the hospital after Buck's hit by lightning, Eddie loses it. Sort of 6x10 coda.

He can’t help but think that this is some kind of sick joke from the universe, which he doesn’t believe but he knows Buck would. “The universe is screaming at you and you refuse to listen” is what Buck said once, it feels like a lifetime ago. He didn't believe it, then, either. And now the universe is mocking Eddie, having him have to tell their kid about Buck, just like Buck had to tell him about the shooting. Eddie doesn’t know how Buck did it, how he had the strength, because he’s on the verge of breaking down and shattering into a million little pieces. Or, Eddie goes home to tell Christopher about Buck getting hurt.

Why I Love It: Uh, ya'll already know THAT I AM DOWNBAD FOR RAFA.

When I first took notice of Tenoch Huerta, I had no idea his most famous role before Namor was portraying an infamous drug dealer in a Narcos TV spin-off. I never watched that show (still haven’t) but I am so hyper fixated on Tenoch, I did watch all of his scenes on YouTube and salivated over every gif I came across on Tumblr. I lamented here in a post one day that I hadn’t been able to find any fic for the character, and was pointed to this gem.

Rafa the character is fascinating to me – as problematic as I know people may find the distinction fans want to make to separate their regard from the real criminal depicted by Tenoch in the series. It’s something I still question. I don’t care too much for film, TV or media around drugs and crime. My family loves Scarface, I despise it. People will recommend the Godfather, I have never, nor will I ever watch it (some in the industry insist I study it if I want to write movies, but I still refuse). No different with Narcos. So why do I like the “character”? Why am I drawn to him; curious? Why am I attracted?

Tenoch, plain and simple. I have no other way to articulate that thought, as it is shallow: I like the way Tenoch looks and speaks and characterizes Rafa, no deeper than that.

This story, a one-shot, the first I’ve read featuring him, is a Reader and it’s the perfect way to edge into a full blown hyperfixation. It’s my first in the realm of Tenoch’s other roles outside of Namor. It’s well paced, well plotted, well characterized, not too long or bitter, but rather sweet. I find that of the handful of fics I’ve read featuring Rafa, they are mostly tragedies. This one is not. It’s an easy narrative to be swept away by. I am not Afro Latina, or Mexican, and I don’t smoke weed, but I had no trouble reading this as I would “watch” an episode of the TV show, despite it being a “Reader” fic. And since I will probably never actually watch that show, this is good for me.

This is the first fic I read from the author. If you are intrigued by Rafa, here is a way for you to feed your curiosity that doesn’t require payment in angst.

Summary: Kore, the maiden, the girl, daughter to Demeter | Persephone, the goddess, the queen, wife to Hades | Namor comes to Wakanda looking to forge an alliance. When he meets Shuri, he changes the terms to give Wakanda everything they want — in exchange for Shuri's hand in marriage. While Ramonda refuses to even consider, Shuri can't help but be as drawn to Namor as he is to her. And the choices she makes will shape both their kingdoms in the time to come . . .

Why I Love It: So, there are always going to be the Hades/Persephone fics with a pairing like this. It’s just par for the course. 

What I love about this is that Shuri not only has agency/autonomy, she is level headed and practices diplomacy, and she is full of wonder and joy. Her mother is still alive, so she is not bitter with hatred towards Namor. She is still the curious, nerdy, charming young woman that is eager to explore a new world. Namor does not push, this is not dubious consent. Nor does he manipulate. He is just as awed and curious and charmed by her as she is of him. And he is honest, as he is wont to be. The union is natural, though there are obstacles.

Ramonda, in conjunction, is not written as a mean-spirited villain here (as she has been in a few Nashuri’s I’ve attempted to read), just a concerned and still grieving mother. What would you do if a 500 year old blood thirsty God asked you for your only remaining and youngest child’s hand in marriage? Shuri patiently, and respectfully reasons with her mother, asking for her independence and gaining it on her own terms. Shuri does this while acknowledging her mother's grief and anxiety around losing yet another child. And to the depth of the sea no less. And because of this, Ramonda comes to recognize her daughter as a woman with her own right to choose as she pleases, though it pains her. Reluctantly, albeit. But it's there. A mutual understanding and respect for one another.

The story is ongoing, but the writer proves that the union between Namor and Shuri is a good one, and strong. That it was the right thing to do. It has its obstacles, of course, a good drama needs conflict, but they are not no-win scenarios. And if the characters miscommunicate at times, they always find their way to the truth and express it with love and trust (so far). I would call this writing a healthy depiction of what Nashuri could look like outside of canon.
