This is why I decided to really start digging into my fall menu by making some apple waffles. 🧇 They taste and smell like fall (thanks to cinnamon and apples) and keep you full at least for a couple of hours. . 🍁 INGREDIENTS: 1/2 banana, 1/2 apple, 3/4 cup water, 3/4 cup oat flour, 1/3 tsp cinnamon, 1/3 tsp baking soda . 🍁 RECIPE: mash the banana, grate the apple and mix them both with water. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, cinnamon and baking soda and add fold them into the banana-apple mixture. The country house was quiet compared to their home in the city. The spacious grounds gave Sanford and his dear wife plenty of space over which they could stroll in good weather--but at this time in their lives, it would seem the Marshal pair were doing very little strolling indeed. This was, of course, because Margaret was exceedingly pregnant, something that was known to anyone who glanced her even in passing. As the months had passed, his wife had grown, and now was the time for the pair to begin preparing for the child they would soon welcome to the world. 

The nursery at their London home was, as of that moment, still a work in progress. A letter from Sanford, sent to his mother and Margaret’s asked for help on that matter, as neither he nor his wife knew what would be needed for a true and proper nursery. The decision to meet at the country house had been Sanford and Margaret’s idea--a break from the confines of the city, especially with the full moon drawing near. 

The women were taking residence, for the day, in the little room beside the master bedroom which had been cleared out earlier than morning by the servants, save for three chairs and a table for tea. The chair meant for Alice Applewaffle, however, was empty; the tall, curvy woman who had given Margaret many of her physical attributes paced the perimeter of the future nursery, tapping her chin with her fan and making plans in her head. Emeline sat in her chair beside Margaret, watching the fellow mother pace as she sipped her tea. Alice had been rather tense most of the morning, but, like her daughter, was reticent in expressing her reasoning. 

Smiling gently, Emeline put her own tea down to fill the empty cup still left on the table. 

“There is no point in fretting about the room before we have even had our tea,” she said, her tone kind. “We can discuss what needs to be done while we drink--and Margaret’s servants were kind enough to bring us some sandwiches. 

Alice glanced over her shoulder and huffed--but after a few more minutes of pacing did come to her chair and sit down heavily. She sipped her tea, but held herself in such a way that her nose was turned, just slightly, into the air. 

“I am hardly ‘fretting’ about the nursery--I already know quite exactly how we shall go about it.” Suddenly, her gaze snapped to her daughter, one eyebrow raising. “Out of curiosity, dear daughter of mine...have you been keeping up at all with the word around the city? I assure you, I have been listening quiet carefully. There is a great deal of talk centered around you and your...militia husband, at the moment.” 

Alice Applewaffle had been quite pleased, at first, when her daughter, who had been set sadly aside on the shelf for several years, had somehow managed to acquire a husband--and a very rich, well-respected one, at that. Despite her approval of the match, she did not actually seem to like Lord Marshal himself all that much. She approved of his connections and wealth--just not his person. Like her daughter, she held many judgments towards those who were soldiers; Sanford’s tendency towards arrogance didn’t seem to help, no matter how polite he was to Alice herself. Like her daughter, she could see through that facade--even when there was, actually, nothing to see through. 

“There is always talk,” Emeline said, hoping to shift the conversation. Alice barreled forward, uninhibited. 

“Much of the talk seems determined in pointing out how you and that man have been married barely three months and yet are expecting your first child so very soon! It is a new age miracle, I dare say--my own daughter, the modern madonna!”

Sarcasm seeped from her words; Emeline set her tea down with a small sigh, casting a look of sympathy in her daughter-in-law’s direction. 

On the stairs, Sanford and Howard, still garbed in their riding outfits, paused in their ascension. They had begun a hunt early that morning, as they had promised the women they would--the only reason they returned now, hours early, was because a solemn, gray cloud had begun to leak across the clear sky, threatening rain at any moment. Both had agreed rather easily that warm tea and dry clothes were much preferred to a damp hunt. 

Sanford felt a sharp elbow nudge him in the side. Glancing at his brother-in-law, Sanford frowned. 

“Your face reveals your thoughts all too clearly,” he said, his tone dry. “But please, do keep them to yourself. Rumors are, after all, only rumors.”
