The White House just announced that President Biden has contacted COVID. I wish him a speedy and complete recovery. Because the President has been fully vaccinated (and because he has access to levels of health care few of the rest of us enjoy), he is likely to be well again soon. But even a mild or asymptomatic case can lead to Long-COVID, and we should be protecting ourselves and each other from catching this corona virus and possibly developing a permanent, debilitating condition.
Apoorva Mandavilli, writing for the _New YorkTimes_, reminds us that âfor some people with certain risk factors â age, pregnancy, chronic conditions or a compromised immune system â an infection may bring serious illness.â1
If you want to know what itâs like to live with a post-viral chronic illness, read the Tumblrs of people enduring them (see the tags below), particularly those of us living with myalgic encephalomyelitis (me/cfs), the condition closely aligned with Long-COVID. (âThe illness [Long COVID] is similar to myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome [ME/CFS] as well as to persisting illnesses that can follow a wide variety of other infectious agents and following major traumatic injury.â2) And while some of us are more susceptible than others, ANYONE, no matter how young and healthy, can develop Long-haul COVID:
âLong COVID occurs more often in people who had severe COVID-19 illness, but anyone who gets COVID-19 can experience it, including children.â3
The CDC article also highlights the way that âLiving with Long COVID can be difficult and isolating, especially when there are no immediate answers or solutions.â It does not describe the devastating possible âside effectsâ of losing the ability to work, to enjoy activities, to be independent, nor of the experiences of having doctors refuse to believe oneâs condition is real, of the near-impossibility of getting to a doctor who specializes in post-viral diseases (and who wonât accept insurance)4, nor of the feeling of being an inconvenience or burden to those who care for us.
âIn every age group, even a mild illness may trigger a lasting set of problems. Nearly 14 million Americans, or about 5.3 percent of adults, may now be living with long Covid, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.â1
Wearing an N95 might not be the most comfortable fashion accessory, but putting one on when we will be among others can save lives and the meaningful existence of the people with whom we come in contact. The inconvenience is far less than the loss of income, health, and happiness Long-COVID can bring.

My first memory of really snapping out of my low-functioning state of distaste with the New York careerism that Iâd failed at but still grudgingly admired was when my husband mentioned offhand that his roommate had begun, uncharacteristically, to read a book of Bukowskiâs poetry that had been left lying around the apartment. âA lot of my friends have suddenly started to read a lot more and become interested in new things,â he said thoughtfully. Many of his friends were musicians and artists and from what I gathered not particularly engaged with much reading outside their comfort zone. âI think weâve all started to realizeâŠweâre in our thirties, our arts careers are what they are, and this life is what it is. Now is as good a time as any to commit to something.â What he was describing was a slow and perhaps unconscious understanding that âsuccessâ meant only so much, and that its meaning would do well to become more flexible as we approached middle age. We all wanted to be high-functioning and successful, and we all wanted to create a society where that would not be as hard as it is now, but this life was what it was; our jobs might be somewhat unfulfilling, but this did not mean that all work had to be, or that we couldnât enjoy ourselves anyway. Our hours had to be filled with something else besides idealism about a world where fulfillment would be possible only in the future.

hi!!! i just read A Starladen Stroll, and i loved it! i dont know if im on the aro spectrum, but as someone who's never dated and who doesnt develop romantic feelings very often, it made me feel very Seen! It's hard watching the people you love pair off when you dont really have all that much interest in doing the same. I have a lot of thoughts but i dont wanna dump my brain in your askbox, so ill leave it at that for now! but thank you for writing it - the art is beautiful and so is the story!!!! :D
Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me this! I'm so happy that it resonated with you đ„ș The 'staying in place while others pair off' thoughts hit me often, and was one of the reasons I wanted to make the comic in the first place. Here's to more ace/aro visibility!!!
#ask apoorva#frfr i'm so so happy you liked it#also i would love to hear any and all thoughts you have so never worry about dumping your brain in my ask box hehe#ty for your message!#armedwithapencilandpaper
