What is aplatonicism?

Here is a quick definition to catch you up.

The aplatonic spectrum, otherwise known as the aplatonic umbrella, is a group of platonic orientations that fall under the umbrella term of aplatonic. Those on the aplatonic spectrum may lack platonic attraction or feel it so little that they relate more to aplatonic experiences. The common link between those on the aplatonic spectrum is that they do not feel the "standard" amount of platonic attraction or they don't feel it in the "standard" way, that alloplatonic individuals do.

Resources about aplatonicism are scarce and anyway, this is meant to focus on character analysis first and foremost, so forgive me if I cut this section short. Anyway, I believe I have given enough context, so let's get into the meat of this post.

Is Shadow aplatonic?

As stated outright in the Sonic Ultimate Character Guide, Shadow is a loner who relies on himself first and foremost.

He is extremely individualistic and doesn't compromise for the sake of others. He prefers to act alone rather than as a team, believing the latter to be futile, and will even choose violence over cooperation to get his way.

If he teams up with others with cooperation in mind, it's always in the interest of a higher purpose. He'll actively ditch crowds and avoid gatherings once the action is over.

Most of his interactions with the rest of the cast follow this pattern, however there is some nuance to be considered when looking at his dynamic with a select few characters.

Rouge and E123 Omega are two characters Shadow has often been partnered with. Although the word "allies" would be more appropriate to describe their relationship, they're easily the ones Shadow is closest to out of everyone else. In the case of Omega, Shadow even displays bouts of camaraderie, likely due to the fact they share a similar mindset.

Another notable dynamic that stands out is that between Shadow and Sonic. Shadow's attitude towards him could be much the same as with everyone else if it weren't for their rivalry. Although Shadow is always focused on his goals above all else, Sonic's presence brings out a competitive side that distracts him and pushes him to act recklessly.

Conclusion

Shadow doesn't feel the need for companionship and doesn't seek to bond with others if he doesn't have an ulterior motive. He's a loner and a misanthropic, and would rather work alone to achieve his goals in the most efficient way. Because of his standoffish personality, the few close/intense relationships he has are with people who are "like" him in some way, given the impression of an unconventional connection in a very tangible and grounded manner, and not so much driven by feelings of affection or love. Hence why I think Shadow is aplatonic or is on the aplatonic spectrum... I rest my case.

Today's order of business: Dean Winchester is aplatonic. Let me explain why.

To start: aplatonic people do not experience platonic attraction. They do not have any desire to befriend specific people. I am going to assume that you all are familiar with asexuality and aromanticism. It's the same exact thing but for friendship. They often don't want friends in general, although of course not necessarily. Some aplatonic people are indifferent and don't really care if they have friends or not, and some like having friends despite the lack of attaction. The key is that if you're aplatonic, you don't meet people, even really cool people, and go "hey, I want to become friends with them." Even if you have friends, they tend to be pretty easy to drop if life changes because you don't feel that inherent connection to them.

Dean? Throughout the show as I've seen thus far (seasons 1-4), he never exhibits any desire for friends. He doesn't want to keep any specific people around, and he doesn't want friends as an abstract concept, either. The whole thing never enters his mind.

This is especially noticeable because Sam is so clearly alloplatonic. He's always looking for connection with others. Every time he meets one of the special children, he wants to keep in contact. He gives out his phone number to Andy and actively searches for Ava. In early romantic/sexual encounters, like in Provenance (1x19) and Heart (2x17) he seems much more interested in befriending these women than sleeping with them. In After School Special (4x13), the death of someone he was friends with for a single month in high school absolutely guts him. In Dean's flashbacks to high school, he doesn't even try to make friends. He only cares about hooking up with girls.

The only real exceptions I can think of are his relationship with Cassie (1x13), which is still far more sexual/romantic than any kind of friendship, and Richie (3x04) who is a fellow hunter and thus more of a coworker than anything. Yes, you certainly can be friends with girlfriends and coworkers, but that usually isn't the defining feature of either relationship. Besides, if his feelings for either of them were especially strong, I think he would have kept in contact with them. He runs into Richie again by accident, and he never seeks out Cassie again after her single episode.

The contrast with Sam makes it pretty obvious that it isn't just that friends are impractical given Dean's lifestyle. The same goes for Sam, but he still obviously wishes he could have them. It also means that it isn't a matter of desire for friends getting in the way of the plot or the writer's vision for the show, because Sam displays platonic attraction all the time and the show still works.

Now, one could argue that he does want friends and simply represses that. It is true that Dean represses almost everything. However, Dean is not actually good at repressing things. There are always cracks in the facade, and these cracks are displayed very clearly to the audience. He thinks he puts up a decent front, but time and time again, characters (especially Sam) see right through him. But when it comes to loneliness? Desire for connection and relationships outside of his family and sex? We don't see a thing. Dean is only lonely when separated from his family. He very much does not need anyone else.

If Dean wanted friends at some point but learned to repress that or ignore that desire? We would see that. We are shown countless times all the dreams and desires he needs to set aside in service of hunting and family, and friendship is never one of them. Even in his dream reality in 2x20, he doesn't have any friends at all.

Now, I am aware that in later seasons, Dean makes friends. That said, from experience in the apl community, it is pretty common for us to end up with friends whether we want them or not. Alloplatonics enjoy adopting friendless people. Sometimes people just keep showing up in your life and you're like "well... I guess we're friends now." Not feeling platonic attraction doesn't stop us from liking people or getting along with them once the relationship exists, we just don't have that feeling of attraction compelling us to start a relationship. I personally have loads of friends, and they're mostly by accident. You have enough good conversations with a mutual or someone in a discord server or someone irl and they tend to stick around. So while I know Dean makes friends later, unless he actively seeks them out and initiates the friendship, that really doesn't have any bearing on if he's aplatonic. Besides, the fact that in 4 entire seasons he doesn't do that at all when Sam does multiple times is more than enough for me.

To put it very simply, why do I think Dean is aplatonic? Because Sam is lonely in general, but Dean is only lonely when separated from Sam and/or John. Family are the only people he wants or needs.

(A disclaimer that aplatonic people can absolutely want romantic relationships. Dean just never demonstrate that. They also don't necessarily have any attraction to family either. That's called being afamilial. Dean just very obviously is not afamilial)

with Safe Person(s), the wires kind of get crossed. i think i'm somewhat plato-averse, and that continues with SPs, but i'm also romo-repulsed unless it's either (A) fictional characters, or (B) my SP/someone who's bordering on becoming an SP. with both of those i'm romance favorable.

so with SPs, even though i don't feel romantic attraction, i immediately jump to romance and romantic-esque relationships because i do Not want platonic relationships, and romance is "the next best thing" or smth like that. (and yes, with being allosexual i am aware that there could be purely-sexual relationships or primarily-sexual relationships with an added emotional component that isn't necessarily platonic or romantic. however. that makes me feel like i'm Icarus reaching out for the sun while being painfully aware my wax wings are melting. romance just feels easiest, so that's what i shoot for in the case that i shoot for anything)

and like, sure, my apl-ness comes in part from the avpd. and especially the aversion to platonic relationships. sometimes i wonder if i might actually be plato-favorable, but then i remember what friendships actually mean and have meant for me historically and i vomit in my mouth a little bit. (especially with the latest venture of my ex/ex-SP wanting to Stay Friends and me agreeing even though they'd just broken my trust in an extremely fundamental way (far beyond the break-up--there's a lot of circumstances with what happened that go well beyond just the break-up) because they were, quite literally, the only real relationship--romantic or otherwise--i had. plus i was also scared that if i refused and cut them off (which i did eventually do) they would start spilling my secrets to their new boyfriend who they started dating within literal weeks of breaking up with me. so.)

(and then, of course, the npd comes in and makes me crave attention and love from people who know literally 0 about me because i'm too scared to say things about me in case they hate me, but that's a whooooole other tangent)

sometimes i get annoyed with what feels like a growing attitude in fandoms that there's Too Much Shipping and that there needs to be a bigger focus on platonic relationships. and like, i get it to a degree, platonic relationships need more recognition in fandom, but the problem isn't the (romantic) ships like a lot of other aspec and especially arospec fandom-goers seem to believe, the problem is the lack of platonic rep, which can be fixed without turning ire onto romantic ships (and occasionally the people who like the romantic ships as well). especially as someone who's primary mode of dealing with emotions and thoughts is through (fan)fiction and prefers romantic ships because of my own personal experiences. like, yeah, i get that there's a lot of amatonormativity and allonormativity in fandom, i feel it too--but sometimes it feels like people are missing the forest (the amato- and allonormativity) for the trees (individual people finding romantic ships to be more interesting to write/read/think about than platonic relationships)

I have four WIPs I'll likely be talking about on here, though none of them are very far progressed. The first three are ones I'm actually working on right now, the last one is more like... a hopeful wish for the future. All of the main characters in these books/series are queer and probably neurodivergent in some way or another. All of these names are also totally plausible to change, so don't be shocked if that happens.

aspec people arent inherently incapable of love or sexual attraction because its a *spectrum*, our attraction to people manifests in different ways than allos thats all

autistic people can be on the aspec (sincirely, an autistic aroace with autistic aroace friends), like literally being autistic doesnt mean you automatically cant be aro/ace/apl just because theres the autistic stereotype about being "cold and unloving"

saying a canonically bi character is aspec doesnt erase their bisexuality, there are literally real life people who are both bi and on the aspec out there (one of my aforementioned friends is autistic, aroace AND bi) and i feel like theres a couple of people forgetting that and treating aspec people as if we all fit in this specific box of complete inability to feel any attraction at all

I'm trying to learn more about aplatonics so I can support them better, but I don't have any examples of what being aplatonic is actually like. Do you have any aplatonic headcanons for characters (I assume there aren't any explicitly apl characters considering there are barely even any canonically aro or ace characters)? I think it would help the most if I heard the reasons you potentially have for headcanoning a character as apl, to get an understanding of some experiences or traits that seem like aplatonic experiences (I'm also trying to follow apls to learn about actual people's experiences). If you respond to this, thank you!

I don't actually do much headcannoning myself, but one I've seen from some other apls that I agree with is Kris from Deltarune being aplatonic or greyplatonic. The way they interact with their friends and seem less involved or connected with them while still being close really gives greyapl or plato indifferent apl vibes. I don't really have much else to say about it unfortunately since it's not really my thing, but I hope that's at least a little helpful.

for the aro visibility day I guess I should uhh be visible so here's my story :

When I first thought I had a crush on someone it was a friend in um some grade ( can't remember. ) I thought it was a crush because that's the only word I knew about for any *feelings for people* .. curse you , amatonormativity. I just liked being around him and didn't want anything else so at this point I'd say it was purely platonic. There was another person I had vague feelings about but really I just wanted to be him because he was really smart and a guy ( woah I'm trans. ) I never thought about kissing anyone and friends were all I needed at that point.

Fast forward some years and boom there's a girl I find stunning. Like. A cool art ™️. And then I start freaking out about my orientation , thinking I was bi. This period of questioning was really hard for me because I kept asking myself " do you really like girls ? guys ? like , like like ?? " and the answer was always no , as in I didn't want to kiss anyone , didn't think about being in a relationship with anyone , didn't want to sex sooooo where did that leave me ?

I learned about asexual after some online searching for months. It was liberating but not quite. I knew asexual people still had to capacity to like romance and romantically be attracted to people but I had none of that. I love reading books. That was the only thing I loved , aside from art and climbing. But most books esp. fantasy were really annoying to read because all the characters did was get into love triangles and that made me really pissed and grossed out. ( This sparked my obsession with Aristophanes but that's another story lol. )

So I found the word aromantic some time later and honestly it didn't stick at first. I thought " nah there's no way. I still romo like people. I'm bi after all. And there was that one girl two years ago .. " Joke's on you younger me that was aesthetic attraction and once you start learning more about aromanticism and about it everything will make sense. I started trying the label on because I was doing so with gender and other orientation labels. And it stuck. So acceptance wasn't really an issue. Or self acceptance.

My aplatonicism is definitely related to my aromanticism. It was when I was coming out as aro and romo repulsed to people when an acquaintance was like " oh so you don't love us :'( " and I thought about it later and decided that yeah. I didn't. No thank you. Being aro and being apl are so looked down on by people irl that those two labels that I started feeling the need to stand by them so to speak. To flaunt them in aphobes faces.

It was also around this time I had to come to terms with my trauma ( those were a couple of hectic years ) from my mother. I'm not going to say much about it but she's pretty aphobic and amatonormative. There are lots of other things and because of that I started getting emotional attachments ( dependencies ) to safe people. Whatever those emotions are I have no word other than love to describe it .. curse you English language. And so I thought I had a crush on my fp for a while. Nope. Just sensual attraction and emotional dependency. hah.

Where I am now , I'm aromantic and loveless and heartless and romo repulsed and aceflux and somewhat non partnering. It's been a journey and I couldn't be prouder of being aromantic.

Aprilia Tuono V4 update for 2025

2025 Aprilia Tuono V4 and Tuono V4 Factory Aprilia Tuono V4 and Tuono V4 Factory score a fairing and aero revamp, updated electronics and a bump in power for 2025.

2025 Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory The fairing remains frame-mounted, now with more protection from air flow for the rider, while running two overlapping wings to increase vertical load by 2.5 kg at 250 km/h. Heat disipation is also claimed to have been improved, with more powerful radiator fans added. Side panels are also new, and better integrated with the style of the new tail, with a simple rear light cluster that allows the licence plate holder to be removed, as an easy step in track preparation, a change mirrored on the new RSV4. The frame on the Tuono is now painted.

2025 Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory The famous Aprilia 65-degree V-four engine will also be Euro5+ compliant, with power boosted to 180 hp, a 5 hp gain over the outgoing model, thanks to new 52 mm throttle-bodies and a revised exhaust system. As on the new RSV4, the cat has been moved to allow for easier fitment of the Aprilia accessory slip-on, but also decreasing heat build up near the rider. A first for the Tuono is also the frame being painted in matte black, rather than the traditional aluminium finish.

2025 Aprilia Tuono V4 On the electronics front, Aprilia are touting a new adaptive/predictive component to their algorithms, which they say continuously analyses the vehicles dynamic response and individual riding style, to offer more refined and effective electronic controls/rider aids. The six-axis inertial platform, Ride-by-Wire electronic throttle and three riding modes which manage the three levels of Cornering ABS come as standard on both models, as well as the controls that are offered by the APRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control).

2025 Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory That includes: - ATC, Aprilia Traction Control that can be adjusted across 8 levels whilst riding without closing the throttle. This system now offers more effective intervention and works in synergy with the new ASC (Aprilia Slide Control) system, which can be adjusted across 3 independent levels (but is only standard on the Factory). - The new AWC, or Aprilia Wheelie Control system, can be adjusted across 3 levels, with predictive functions: the intervention does not abruptly step in to mitigate a wheelie that has already started, but rather acts gently before the event occurs, to the benefit of performance. The adaptive function, dedicated to track sessions, learns the rider’s characteristics and adjusts the level of intervention required to ensure the best possible performance. - AEM, Aprilia Engine Map, with three different mapping options to change the character and the way the engine delivers power. - AEB, Aprilia Engine Brake, the engine braking control system that can be adjusted across three levels, with a specific algorithm that optimises function whilst taking the lean angle into account. - AQS, Aprilia Quick Shift, the electronic gearbox for super-fast shifts without closing the throttle or using the clutch, with a downshift function that lets the rider downshift without having to press the clutch. Also allows downshifting with the throttle open.

2025 Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory The Track Pack expands out the electronics further, and comes standard on the Tuono V4 Factory, including: - Race Dashboard, the instrumentation configuration dedicated to the track. - ALC, Aprilia Launch Control, the launch control system for track use only, adjustable across three levels. - APL, Aprilia Pit Limiter, the system that makes it possible to select and limit the maximum speed permitted in order to ride along the pit lane of racetracks, or to enable easy adherence to the speed limits on normal roads. - New ASC, Aprilia Slide Control, that can prevent and limit the lateral slide of the rear wheel. Like the new AWC, the ASC also features predictive functions.

2025 Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory The Comfort Pack is another Tuono V4 Factory standard, including cornering headlights along with Aprilia Cruise Control. The Rack Pack is only available on the Factory and includes the GPS Module that also enables automatic detection of lap times on the track, plus the corner-by-corner function, a system that automatically changes the electronic ATC and AWC settings based on whatever the rider programs in. It is the most advanced version of the corner-by-corner electronics management system that Aprilia first introduced back in 2015. Requiring the GPS Module and also only available on the Tuono V4 Factory is also the Suspension Pack, which takes things even further by allowing the Öhlins Semi-Active Smart EC 2.0 suspension settings to be tuned corner by corner.

2025 Aprilia Tuono V4 Both the Race Pack and the Suspension Pack use the new fourth-generation Aprilia MIA, Aprilia’s multimedia platform (offered as an accessory on both models) which enables smartphone connection to the bike, extending the functions of the instrumentation. So, I saw someone I follow get tagged to do this with an end note that anyone who wanted to could complete it as well. So… I did, ha. I’m not putting it in a read more, but be warned it is a bit long. Not super long for once, though. I’ll put a blank one in a read more at the end, though, if anyone else wants to do it. :-)

I have a total of 27 works published on AO3. :-)

2. What's your total ao3 word count?

Ah. It’s. Um. 2,094,546. I’m. Um. Not concise. A lot of that came from after the pandemic, since I wrote two 375k+ fics in the span of a month and a half respectively, and then a 400k+ fic that is an endless WIP now, sadly, all since 2020. Yeah.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

I’ve written for a lot of different fandoms. Let me take a look… Danganronpa, Gravity Falls, Supernatural, The Hobbit, Detroit: Become Human, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Super Mario, Batman (the Telltale games specifically), Harry Potter (back before JK went completely off the rails and showed her true colors), and The Avengers (Iron Man specifically, post End Game).

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Here they are in order from most to least, with the amount of kudos and the fandom: Luigi and the Beast (Mario): 1,771 A Pirate's Life (Gravity Falls): 1,290 The Problem with Perfection (Danganronpa): 1,259 Compatible (Gravity Falls): 996 Strangers to Suffering (Avatar: The Last Airbender): 648

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Uh. Not usually, no… I tried to with my most recent fic, but it just got too much. I always overthink my replies and they end up being overly long and needlessly complicated for a simple question or comment. I feel awkward just writing “Thanks for the comment!!!” though, so I often don’t. Also, I dislike how it makes it seem like I have more comments on my fics than I do, you know?

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Hm… probably A Pirate’s Life. I usually have happy endings to my fics, even the super angsty ones, but with APL, I had the main characters (Dipper and Bill Cipher… don’t judge me, there were a lot of cute fics for it back in the day that I liked. I also aged up Dipper a bit, so… yeah) go their separate ways in the end. It was a bittersweet ending, and I still stick with it. The characters as I wrote them would not have ended up together, but they do end up having mostly happy lives separately.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Hm… this is hard, since— like I said— most of my fics end happily. I can’t say which one ended the happiest, really.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I used to when I was younger and just starting out, and it makes me paranoid that every comment I get will be full of hate and derision. But honestly? I’ve not gotten any hate on any of my fics in years, especially the newer ones. I have gotten some people who say they didn’t like the direction a certain fic took, but since it was clearly marked in my tags, I tend to just shrug and ignore those. Most people aren’t harsh anymore, though.

9. Do you write smut?

Ehhhh. Yes, but only as a way to move the plot along. Not smut for smut’s sake, since it makes me feel awkward.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Not usually, but I did write a Danganronpa fic that was set in Hogwarts once (again, before J.K. Rowling went completely off the rails and I gave up on HP).

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I’m aware of, no. I did find one on Good Reads once, but I think someone just linked my fic? Not sure how Good Reads works, honestly.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I’ve had a couple people start translating a fic, but they never finished translating it.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, and I don’t think I ever will. Not only do I not have anyone I’m close enough with to write a fic with, but I don’t think I’d be good at it. I can’t follow a plan to save my life, which I imagine would be frustrating for someone trying to write with me.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Ah, this I can’t really say… I have a lot of ships that mean a lot to me, and picking one to be my “favorite” would be too tricky. I like all of them for different reasons.

15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Oh boy. Luigi and the Beast and The Problem With Mondo. I desperately want to finish both fics, but I don’t think I ever, ever will. I legit cannot continue writing stories that I’ve stopped writing for longer than a week or two. It’s why my longest fics were all written in the span of a month and a half. If I don’t write that quickly, I never finish. -.-

16. What are your writing strengths?

I’m really good at writing emotions, I think. I do a lot of introspection and I have a fairly good grasp on my own emotions and my responses to my emotions, so I can write emotional scenes very well, I believe. I’m also decent with dialogue and descriptions.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot. Plot, plot, plotty plot plot. Anytime I try to write a story with a solid plot, it comes apart at the seams. Like I said earlier, I cannot follow a plan to save my life, and so I often will move away from any plot I thought up initially and end up somewhere very weird and bizarre. Or, conversely, I will figure out where I want the story to go plot wise only after I have been writing it for a little while, and so the plot feels weak and disjointed with the start of the fic. Either way, it does not make for a fun experience with writing. Which is why I tend to stick to basic plots with lots of dialogue and emotions.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I just use Google Translate… that’s what I did for Luigi and the Beast with the Italian.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Harry Potter, since I was a HUGE fan when I was in middle school. It’s actually what got me interested in fanfiction and writing in the first place, since before that I never knew fanfics existed and I didn't much care for creative writing in general. I first wrote a handwritten Rose/Scorpius fic during lunch in like… 7th grade, but only got a page or so in before scrapping it. Then I started writing Dramione on FF . net and never really stopped writing. I think I've written at least one fic a year since... 2013 I'd like to say? Wait... no, 2012. I looked on FF . net and it shows that my first fic was published in 2012, when I was the tender age of 14...

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

Honestly? I think it’s either Dance of the Robot (which is a fix-it fic for Avengers: End Game, where Steve goes back in the past and becomes Tony’s honorary— and somewhat distant— uncle. It explores their relationship when Tony is young and how hurt he is by everyone always ignoring him, especially Steve who avoids him because of like… timeline reasons. I really like this fic since it makes me feel a little better about the whole “Steve travels back in time to be with Peggy!!!” thing. I still think it’s stupid, but I like the idea of Tony and Steve having a familial relationship, even if Steve had to be distant for the timeline’s sake), or The Problem with Perfection (my Danganronpa fic. I go back and forth on liking this story, but ultimately, I am very pleased with how it turned out, and think that it is one of my few long fics that actually told the story I wanted to tell accurately and decently. Since it didn’t have too much in the way of plot, and since I discovered where I wanted to go with the story fairly early on, I was able to circumvent the usual downfalls I have with my other long fics). Both of these fics accomplished what I wanted them to accomplish, and I enjoy both of them in different ways.

ive been enabled (thank youuu and also thank you @pigtailedgirl), so first post goes something like this:

Introductions, because i always think it's good to reiterate what aspec can encompass, as many people tend to think it closes doors rather than opens them in many a varied (queer) direction

aspec encompasses the entire a-spectrum, including (but not limited to) asexual (as an umbrella term), aromantic (as an umbrella term), loveless, aplatonic (as an umbrella term), and demi (which can also go under ace-and-aro-and-apl). for example, one could read fraser as asexual alloromantic (not sexually attracted, but romantically) which could or could not include a desire for sex in and of itself (i wouldn't personally think he's sex favourable, but like... i could buy sex neutral). one could read fraser as grey-ace demi-romantic loveless (very rarely sexually attracted, only desiring a romantic connection with someone off the back of an already strong long-lasting connection, and not basing his relationships in whether or not he loves a person, whether or not he considers that he "feels" love or not). many more reads. many ways to also take these terms in fluid directions beyond what i just wrote

the main idea behind reading a character as aspec is that it responds to non-normative ideas included in the text about sex, romance, and friendship. these can often be arrived to via the language of absence -- that is, people don't know the language about it and in the past didn't even have words to describe the feeling necessarily -- which means one can look at characters that do canonically have sex, get into romantic and platonic relationships, and go: "but what would it look like if we skewed this to the left. what are the semiotics here?"

and then, with characters like fraser, there's really not a lot of over-reading to do, on the whole. there's just. there's a lot of queer non-normative subtext (and text) to how fraser engages with love, romance, sex, and friendship

some fraser things: fraser canonically gets distressed or doesn't notice when getting hit on, canonically muses on what love is and whether he's ever really "felt" it, canonically gets into forms of relationships with women who give him orders and like pushing him about (in the first case in a literal and also canonically manipulative way, in the second at first in a "i don't like you" and then in kind of a sexy roleplay way) which at least in the first one (so far, i haven't seen the latter two seasons yet) includes sex in some capacity (although i read that as... somewhat dubcon, considering fraser's state of mind, but that, another post on that), canonically hasn't had real "friends" in his life, and does things like call ray his "best friend" after knowing him a very short time, canonically doesn't feel distressed at the very idea of kink (whether or not he would knowingly participate is more up in the air), canonically is very chill (and even excited) about the idea of crossdressing, canonically has a philosophy about helping pretty much every person that needs it (even saves gerrard and frankie when it comes to it)

so there are a lot of non-normative ways of looking at the world and political and personal relationships that fit within an aspec theoretical framework, and also a lot of reading of fraser's state of being that can be effectively summed up as "does this man know who he is and what he wants beyond the very specific script/code of honour he has to adhere to"?

whether or not one ships fraser in any direction, reads him as actively wanting to have sex, romantic monogamous or polyamorous relationships, into men or women or both and beyond... it doesn't really negate an aspec read. aspec is a whole other paradigm of reading characters that goes a bit beyond shipping and who they may or may not have sex with, which is one of the many things that really draws me to it as a lens through which to read characters

and like.... my baby boy benton fraser.... the most eligible bachelor in chicago... his way of looking at the world is so incredibly other to every single character around him (and indeed, to what i have seen in most other narratives) that he's already fulfilling aspec criteria simply by what is already there (the very asking what love is and looking for guidance on that is aspec in nature), i don't just look at absence this time, i look at textual and subtextual presence, which is. so rare. so so rare. listen. characters being given this many aspec traits is a Gift and i am going to spend as long as i can unpacking it!

the rest is simply playing with different versions of what that can look like, both for his personal relationships and his philosophies and politics about what sort of person he wants to be in the world, with other people

it's, imo, going an extra level into his character and not assuming allosexual and alloromantic and alloplatonic as default for being, especially when fraser-as-character is written to not be the default (albeit, not the default in the body of a michelangelo statue, but he can't help that). this man moves through the world so differently that people have an instinctive reaction to it, even when he's not, ostensibly, doing anything. which is a fun place to start, personally, with this character specifically. why is everyone scrutinising him so intently for simply being? why can they not put their finger on what makes him so... different?

am shocked that ace!fraser seems to be a not-so-common take, he's literally one of the most asexually written characters ive ever seen on a tv screen, he's up there with bojack horseman's todd.

What made you ship it (platonic/familial)?

I LOVE found family & the closeness people can have that's not romantic. I feel a lot of times people tend to view romantic relationships as the "highest"/"most important" dynamic, both in regards to fandom & its ship-centric view on things and amatonormativity (they blend together).

The implication that being in a monogamous, heterosexual romantic relationship is the most important thing & something everyone needs is uhhh very lame to me, as romance + sex repulsed nonamorous loveless apl*aroace.

The "Incorrect Sanders Sides Quotes" video sdfinitely pushed platonic demus more. I used to not really focus on it, but seeing them interact in that Genuinely... gave me the strongest feelings ever???. I like cannot describe how I felt. It was like. ... SOMETHING. I DONT KNOW.

I ALSO HAVE a close friend who really enjoys romantic demus & seeing it draw them 24/7 affects me in so many ways (positively, promise).

Janus & Remus have the potentional of a very close-knit platonic relationship (I say potential, since they have yet to interact canonically on camera). The idea of 2 characters that are treated as horrible, disgusting monsters finding comfort in each other is ... the best thing ever to me, especially if it's not romantic (not saying this dynamic is worse if it's romantic, just that I, personally, prefer it when it's platonic). It means a lot to me, to have characters be soft and affectionate with each other when they're viewed as evil. I know many people do, but as someone that is demonised due to a million things (queer, black, disabled, mentally ill) it means a little more.

(In general, the entire "dark" side arc means a lot to me)
