The Coffee ClubTM Part I
Now that we’ve talked about The Tea Club TM it is time to talk about its counterpart, The Coffee ClubTM.
It is Ethiopia that founded the The Coffee ClubTMand actually discovered coffee in general. As such, it very serious business for her and she’ll take extra time just for coffee. Eshe even has an elaborate coffee ceremony, that she insists on preforming in the appropriate setting if possible. This tends to be the bane of the younger nations, that prefer on having coffee-to-go and standing around group chatting. The same can be said for her method of roasting the coffee beans herself, crushing them and making the beverages via direct infusion.
Due to trade, Yemen then became the co-founder of the club. Thanks to him, coffee was spread to the other Middle and Near Eastern countries, and popularised to the point where it became known as “the wine of Islam”. Drinks his coffee as he does his tea – strong to the point the normal people would get jitters.
As for the Near Eastern countries – Turkey is the greatest influence here, with nearly all the Balkan nations – Greece, Armenia, former Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria – sticking to the method he taught them. Said method is using finely ground coffee that isn’t filtered. The brew is cooked for a few minutes until it begins to froth and then poured into ornate cups and served with sweets, usually Turkish delight. Sadik prefers it moderately sweetened, black and sometimes with a hit of clove. Heracles has recently discovered frappe for himself and is therefore gravitating away from the traditions. It simply adds to the many things they tend to fight about.
Generally, Turkey seldom comes alone and never comes with just Greece or Armenia. If one of those are involved, then a third party has to join them – the bad blood between them would just cause things to go off the rails else. Furthermore, Turkey usually only extends invites to either of them through said third party.
Both Israel and Indonesia have the same simplistic style of making coffee, something over which they have formed a strange bond. It is adding the coffee powder in a cup, add hot water and maybe some sugar and serve. It is enough to make both Eshe and Rodrich shriek, yet Alfred has an appreciation for this method.
Saudia Arabia, Oman, Palestina and Syria all share a fairly similar coffee ceremony with three narrow pots – one for cooking the water, one for filtering and one for spicing the coffee. Spices that are used are usually saffron, cardamom, cloves or rose water. These nations tend to form a small clique during club meetings and usually tend together. Israel and Palestina are two personifications that under no circumstances should come near each other during gatherings. Since there are more such pair, Eshe has written an unofficial rule book on people that are not allowed to be seated close to each other.
Italy used to be on very good terms with Turkey in the Renaissance and therefore was one of the first Europeans to come into contact with coffee. After his pope blessed it in the 17th century, he happily and openly indulged in it. Felicano can be quite a snob when it comes to coffee, and will happily make coffee for everybody to ensure that the coffee suits his tastes. Thankfully for him, there a few that object to this tactic. At most, he gets reminded time and time again in icy tones by the Eastern coffee drinkers that he shouldn’t add milk to their coffee.
In lieu of the Siege of Vienna, Austria adopted coffee for himself and thus was the first Western European to do so. Can be as much a snob about it as Italy, and only tolerate the finest qualities. Has his coffee with either cake or sweets and see it as mandatory that coffee is served along with a small glass of water. Over the last few years, he has built up a rapport with Turkey and often converses with him at meetings. Sadik was become Rodrich’s informant on Middle Eastern matters and Rodrich Sadik’s informant on European matters. Sometimes they both fall into nostalgia for the old days and discuss art and cooking.
Germany and Prussia are also strong coffee drinkers. If anything, Ludwig needs coffee to wake up nowadays and if he is really desperate, then he’ll go for Ersatzkaffee. Always has a pack of that stuff in his suitcase or bag for emergencies. Gilbert needs coffee. He has written letters of complaint to the government when he was the GDR because he didn’t have coffee. Is also the sort of person whose urge to have coffee can be timed to the minute. When the urge comes in the afternoon, everything else can wait because then he has to have his coffee – a particular trait he shares with Austria.
Now, I’ve split this into two parts because else the whole thing would be too long. Part II is here.

How not to make a terrible Hetalia OC
Hi y’all, I feel like this really needs to be said, cause I was looking at different hetalia OCs the other day, and ngl many of them were, well, terrible.
First off, before I begin with my guide to making a decent oc, can I just say that any one of us can create an oc, in fact I would encourage people to. One problem with the hetalia fandom is that other than Scotland, Yugotalia and South America (somewhat) we haven’t really done our research when it comes to creating ocs and it really shows.
1) Research – I do feel like some of you spend too much time looking at stereotypes of different countries and not enough time doing actual research. I am going to show you 2 different pictures here (Example 1 and 2 are below.) Notice the difference? Someone clearly researched into the issues faced by South Africa and decided on a way to come to a neutral outcome, whilst someone else didn’t do any research and decided that a White person was the best way to represent an entire population in Africa. Please research into the culture and history of the country when deciding to create the OC as if anything that would help you to try and understand the character you are attempting to draw or write. Also look at the hetalia tumblr or Instagram tag for the character as there might be an OC that you really like! I did so, and found really cool ocs by @disaster-fruit and @portu-cale! Then if this happens, there's already an oc you can see as the country! Just make sure to contact and credit the artist in any art you may produce.
2) Ask - Also remember that research doesn’t just apply to the internet! If you have a friend or some of your family members are from that country and have been there, then ask them about the culture! Not only that, but I’d suggest you also check out the country’s reddit, as there is a bunch of stuff you can find there which helps to gain a general understanding about what might actually be offensive and what won’t be. Also, I’d check out the tumblr tag for the country as well – really interesting facts about the country tend to come up.
3) What you are creating the oc for – Are you creating an OC for a fanfiction or fanart? Depending on which one you are looking at then your research differs. Fanart requires you to be respectful towards the country, and obviously this is where most people in the fandom fall short – as you are literally drawing a representation of the country. Fanfiction in contrast tends to be more about characterisation, so rather than just make up a personality for the country, I would suggest that you read the history and facts about the country before creating a character for them. The thing about personified nations is that none of them are good or bad – they’re morally grey, so it’s important to do your research when deciding how exactly they are in this category. Patient Harmony on Fanfiction.net actually does this really well, and if you’re over 16 and are into the darker side of the fandom, I’d suggest checking them out!
4) Think – Please think about what you are creating. This is most important when it comes to two areas – Colouring and Controversy. I’ll cover those in the next two points. Just remember to think before you create – what countries should I draw cutesy fanart for and which ones should I not draw it for? Also, think about the human names for the countries. You do have to look at names from the country you are creating an oc for – why the hell would Wales’ name be Victoria or Israel’s name Tal Haviv? Giving a oc of a nation an anglicised or Americanised name or making up a name because it sounds like the nation’s capital is just plain disrespectful. Also, please do research whatever name you do end up using as for example if Mexico was called Porfirio, you might not realise the problem with the name, but most Mexican fans of the show would. So do think about what you’re coming up with – And if something doesn’t feel right, then research it!
5) Colouring – What skin tone are they? This seems to be the hardest thing for the hetalia fandom to comprehend and I can empathise to an extent. Of course, if the country is particularly diverse, such as Uganda then it will be somewhat challenging to come up with a skin tone for them. However completely whitewashing the country, like an ungodly amount of people have done with aph Mexico is ridiculous. Not everyone is white, in fact most people aren’t white – Just because you and your neighbourhood may be doesn’t mean that the entire world is! If you think that everyone is one skin tone then you need to get the hell out of whatever special rock you were living under. There are hundreds if not thousands of skin tones out there, and people do not either look like this: (is below) Or this: (is below) So if the OC you’re going to create is black, you don’t need to paint them the darkest shade of brown that you have. You also should avoid making them orange – If someone is from Africa, they are not orange! Likewise if someone is from Native America then don’t make their skin yellow! One thing in general that might help y’all out is if when creating your oc, you search on google images ‘X country people’ and see the results. JUST DON’T MAKE THE CHARACTER WHITE CAUSE YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
Also, I don't know why someone created an entire south America oc, nor do I understand why people keep making statetalia ocs
6) Controversy – Now this one is going to be kind of long, but it really needs to be addressed. Just because you’re creating ocs for hetalia doesn’t mean that ALL stereotypes about the country need to be the main thing about the oc. Stereotypes about Italians loving pasta or the English loving tea are NOT the same as Mexicans being fence hoppers or the entire continent of Africa being malnourished. Like I’ve said many times already, do your research. An important thing to note, is that most of these stereotypes were made by 1st world countries and so naturally the most offensive ones are about the ethnicities that struggle to get any form of positive representation in the media. Another thing that needs to be addressed – Would you make fanart about any recent terror attacks? No? Then don’t make ocs that would have solely come about as a result of a disastrous event (e.g. Chernobyl). Also, you have to be reaaalllly careful when it comes to quite a few nations. Like Yemen and Palestine. It just feels really insensitive to draw cutesy fanart when their people are being targeted and insensitivity already is a major problem with the fandom. It’s 2020, not 2010 and it’s important to remember that!
7) Try – Another problem with the hetalia fandom is that most people just stray away from non-european countries. On google, it says there are 196 countries in the world and if you add all of the micronations, you easily have more than 200 ‘nations’. The thing is, the countries that we keep missing out all have their own histories and cultures – this is a constant. I personally see hetalia as a series which serves to show that not all history is depressing and gory – it can be funny and amusing too! And it’s not just Europe that has amusing aspects to it’s history and culture. Where’s the jollof rice war between Nigeria and Ghana? Or the confusion surrounding how many islands Indonesia has? Creating ocs for the world’s countries literally means that what you draw doesn’t need to be as limited – You can have a BRICS meeting, or have a meeting between the African Union. Hetalia literally has a worldwide fanbase and wouldn’t it be interesting if we could spread more countries to the fans outside of the canon countries in the show? Shouldn’t it be our goal as fans of a show about different nations and cultures to introduce people to as many cultures as possible? So I encourage you guys to try with hetalia OCs – Just maybe run it by other people before making it public and MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH.
It isn’t hard to create an OC, in fact I’d say it’s a bit easier for hetalia because we have access to everything we need to make one.
I hope this helps ^^

The Tea Club TM
Forget the division of the world in East and West, North and South. One actual and very prominent one is between tea and coffee. Hence The Tea Club TM
Ironically enough, it was Russia and China that founded the whole thing. Ironic because it wasn’t and still never is a friendly gathering between friends. It was a get-together between two hostile neighbours with tensions palpable and just being semi-nice to each other because both sides could profit more from making peace than waging war. Tea time was therefore a time where they could lay aside differences, passive-aggressively sniping at each other or also musing about philosophy, literature and much more.
Over the years, many more nations have joined the club.
Iran and India are both regulars here and are very welcome because both Ivan and Yao have good connections to them. Neeraja is more of the calm sort that causes the conversation to go in the direction of mathematic much to Ivan’s delight and Yao’s aguish. Drinks his tea heavily spiced. Yao sometimes drinks chai as a form of courtesy, but would rather stick to his own tea rituals. India knows this.
While Darya is also very old, she is more of a whirlwind type of person compared to the other elder nations. Especially in the present day, she is heavily involved in politics, in such ways that cause tensions to be continuously high. As such, she is a sort of unregular regular of the club. When she does attend, then the rumour mill starts spinning wildly. Tends to give out fruit candies along with tea. She has the habit of holding a candy or a sugar cube in her mouth while drinking tea.
She also sees to it that she invites Morocco whenever she can. While Samira is of a more composed demeanour, her entertainer persona comes out when it comes to having tea. Yao doesn’t approve of antics such as pouring tea from over a metre in height and Kiku is mortified by how sweet her tea is. However, they all do agree that mixing mint with green tea is very refreshing.
Sometimes, Yemen also attends, and the others don’t agree on whether to dread his visits or look forward to them. At least, when he does attend, they make sure he doesn’t make the tea. Because he his brew is so high on caffeine, that it leaves most of them with jitters.
Vietnam sometimes pops by with her strong preference for green tea made out of fresh leaves. Warry of Yao as she is, she still has long conversations about literature and mythology with him. Sometimes, she catches up with Ivan. Chung Lien is still communist in many way and there is a brittle sort of camaraderie between them.
Some other less, frequent attenders would be Japan and Mongolia. Kiku prefers to drink his tea on his own – to him, the tea ceremony is an intimate act, and there are few nations with whom he would perform it and even fewer that would have the patience with it. When he attends, he never serves and also gets the occasional glare from Yao.
Sarnai is tolerated. That is because she has either bad blood with the other attendees, or is insignificant. While her reign did usher in progress and a few golden ages, Yao, Ivan and Kiku remember the violence of her conquests all too well. Besides, she salts her tea. That is a Mongolian tradition the others detest.
When it comes to tea lovers, England must be mentioned. However, he isn’t a craved for guest. Most of the others have a bone to pick with him, especially because of how condescending and amoral he was during his Empire days. Arthur knows this, and therefore drags Australia or New Zealand or South Africa along to act as intermediators and sooth ruffled feathers whenever he joins in. Darya has joked that he could be baited with tea, Arthur knows he can be baited with tea. While other nations do add milk to their tea, Yao finds this as something worth critiquing in England. Once, China even yet so far as too add lemon juice to the milky tea.
Jack only attends when Arthur makes him come with him, and the same goes for Elenore. They both hold idly chit-chat with the others, with him often grating nerves, and her soothing them. Pierce attends favourably when Arthur isn’t around – he occasionally gets invited by India or Russia. While is also on the boat of black tea and milk, he prefers rooibos. Only with honey and nothing else – people have had to suffer broken bones for approaching his cup of rooibos with sugar. Also always has rusks with his tea, much to the astonishment of everybody else.
Austria is a religious member of The Coffee Club TM but every now and then, he visits The Tea Club TM. He has a weird fondness for herbal teas, most of which stem from plants in his own forests. If it isn’t that, then it is black tea with a sizable shot of rum. Both of these habits result in many raised eyebrows. Yet he welcome because he isn’t part of the NATO and has permanently resigned himself to being a diplomate. He has sharp wit that is more subtle than England’s. Yao finds his jokes about death to be in very bad taste while Ivan most ends up roaring with laughter.
Another religious member of The Coffee Club TM would be Germany. Yet every once in a blue moon, he has an East Frisa phase where he has abnormally strong tea-cravings and therefore must attend. It is almost always a surprise. While he and Russia regard each other with suspicion, Ludwig often gets roped into very pleasant conversations with China or Japan or even Egypt.
Egypt and Turkey are the more nondescript members of the club for the most part. Both of them are rather quiet, and only attend it together. Are very generous when it comes to tea with all the Sacred Hospitality. Therefore they prefer to have tea outside the club in a closed circle of guests or business partners. Besides, Turkey has a greater preference for coffee.
The person whom they would all regard as a heretic would be America. Not because of his love of coffee, rather because of his addiction to ice tea. And because of the Southern tea culture – brew the tea with sugar in a pot so that the sugar caramelises and adding lemon juice to it. All in all resulting in a concoction that has twice as much sugar as Coke. However, Kiku has a photo of Alfred drinking tea British-style in an upper class restaurant in Manhattan. Alfred denies everything and many suspect that photo to be photoshopped anyhow.
The Coffee Club TM is here and here

do you have any headcanons about ethiopia?
Found coffee while he was on a religious stint in a monastery, shared it with Somalia, who shared it with Yemen, and from there it spread across the muslim world
Thinks Somalia is too rude and blunt lmao
Was forced to work with Sudan for a few decades to kick out Ottoman Turkey from eastern Africa (Turkey had also kidnapped Eritrea which was.... a strange episode)
Fought against Djibouti when she was the Adal Kingdom in a Portuguese-Ottoman proxy war
He's known Iran for a verryyyyy long time- in his childhood, he fought with Iran over control of Yemen and they've maintained cultural ties and exchange for two thousands years
Great at chess! (particularly the Ethiopian variant, senterej)
When firearms were introduced, he was.... not particularly skilled at wielding them for a while
He would rather die than let a guest pay for lunch
Makes a mean spaghetti and lasagna

hmmmm here's a few!
Uganda's hair started falling out in the 70s from stress and he decided to go completely shaved- it's been slowly recovering since, but he still has it shaved bald out of habit
Tunisia's beauty mark is in the exact same place as Carthage's 👁👁
Oman crashed at Zanzibar's house for like. a decade or two when his empire fell apart
That eventually led to her house being the gathering place of the "Indian Ocean African+Middle East Old Man Nations" club, where Yemen, Oman, Somalia, and Ethiopia go to drink coffee and bitch @ each other (mostly the last two)

Aph Country Of The Week - Rules and Guidelines
Hi guys, I just want to make the rules for this event clear before the week does start.
1. Do not bring up current politics with the countries in these events - hetalia is not political, and making a character be discriminatory because the government is will not be tolerated in this event.
2. Please tag each of your posts for the event with #aphcountryoftheweek !! It will be easier for me to reshare what has been made by you guys ^^
3. If there is a country anyone wants to be the country of the week, then please send me an ask (anonymously)
4. That being said, please think about what country you are suggesting. I will not be doing a country of the week for countries like Palestine, Yemen, Afghanistan or Lebanon as it feels disrespectful to the people of the countries who are genuinely suffering at the moment
5. Be careful and wary of any stereotypes you may use - there is a very thin line between funny and offensive, so please try not to cross it. If you're confused as to whether or not it could be considered problematic, then I would hold off using said stereotype until Sunday, where you can ask other people on tumblr.
6. Please do try to be supportive of each other - regardless of ships, we are trying to make this fandom a better place and less toxic.
7. And finally rule 7, Participate ^^
Have fun!! And remember, if you have any questions, don't forget to ask

Funfact: The Gwadar district of Pakistan’s Balochistan used to be a part of Oman in the past till Pakistan officially bought it from them in the 1950s to integrate it with the mainland Balochistan province. About 30% of Omanis seem to be Baloch as well, which is kinda cool!
I actually feel kinda bad for Yemen….he looks so tired :(
