I saw @apersonwholikeslotus share some stuff about their ghosts au, and it inspired me to share a little bit more about the ghosts au I’ve been working on myself for well over a year now 💕. Big thank you to @ifindus and @nordickies as well as my friend Third over on discord for helping me out with this AU.

Ghosts, a hetalia AU.

ÅLAND/GERMANY: alive

In this AU, Linnea (Åland) & Ludwig (Germany) take Alison & Mike’s rolls. A young couple who move into a Manor House after a very far off relative of Linn’s passes away. After an accident, Linnea is left with the ability to see ghosts, unlike Ludwig who cannot.

DENMARK: 800s

A Viking arriving in britain right before the Danelaw began. Mathias never actually made it to battle, he tripped and fell onto his axe before he got there. Mathias is the oldest of the ghosts, but he doesn’t speak much English besides a few words he’s picked up overtime. Interestingly, he has an extreme reaction whenever someone mentions him helmet not having horns on it. Mathias likes to upkeep his Viking traditions, and forces Linnea to run a bath for him to sit in every week. Mathias has the ghostly ability to be able to touch and move things with enough effort.

NYO SCOTLAND: 1300s

An overly opinionated woman for her time, Bonnie was married off to a wealthy Danish man when she was young. The pair didn’t get along, she found him intolerable, and fucking stupid. Bonnie was poisoned by her husband on their trip down to the north of england. The second oldest ghost after Mathias, but the two struggled to interact with one another. Bonnie can be seen very faintly in photographs.

FAROE ISLANDS: 1400s

Gyða is the ghost I personally consider to have the most tragic backstory. The daughter of a king, and his servant mistress who had been stolen from her home. Gyða grew up never knowing who her dad was, and believing her existence was pointless. She was raised a servant, and threw her out of the highest window of the house on her 20th birthday. Gyða becomes good friends with Bonnie, who in her death helps her find her worth, which allows her to make peace and move on. Gyða’s voice can be heard by humans so long as she shouts/screams/laughs loud enough. She falls from the highest window in the house every night, recreating her death.

NYO FRANCE: 1536

A wealthy Tudor woman, heavily inspired by Anne Boleyn. Marianne was a mistress of Henry VIII between Boleyn and Seymour. She was beheaded after being accused of treason. Her ghost body can never find her head, but she does have the ability to float. She had a strong friendship with Cornwall, a pirate ghost who died not too long after her, who made peace before Linnea and Ludwig moved in.

NORWAY: 1662-1663

Aksel moved to britain alongside his family as a travelling band. They settled into a village, but were not very trusted or popular because of their pagan beliefs. When accused of witchcraft, aksel was the only one of his family who did not manage to escape and sail off to Iceland. He was burnt at the stake. He becomes best friends with Denmark after being harassed by the Viking. But he winds up learning old Norse from being unable to escape him. The two stick together like glue, aksel is more thankful for Mathias than he lets on. When stood close to Aksel you feel extremely hot.

SWEDEN: 1814

A figure of the Swedish government, Björn is in England to discuss the Sweden-Norway war and possible unification of the countries, along side his son. After a heated argument between him and his son, who will live on to become an infamous fictional serial killer in Sweden, he suffocates Björn in his sleep using his pillow. When we meet björn, he has no idea who killed him, and takes intense pride in his son. Björn likes to fill Aksel in on the “current” political system of Scandinavia (though, it is now very outdated). Björn has the ability to fiddle with lighting.

ENGLAND: WWII

What can I say? Cap is my favourite character. And the design is already made for me! I think Arthur was shot dead. He, similar to cap, had a lover who left the station to fight in the war. He makes peace and moves on when his former crush comes back to visit the house, and when Linnea goes out to talk to him, Arthur finds out his love was reciprocated.

FINLAND: 1986

The youngest of the ghosts! Aino was in britain on holiday, taking a tour of the old manor. She gets distracted by something, and in an attempt to hurry and reconnect with the group, they cross a frozen lake, which breaks and they die of hypothermia in the water. Aino herself is actually a relative of Linnea, her auntie who she never got to meet. Aino becomes an unexpected friend to Arthur, being the newest ghost the pair of them team up to try and get to the bottom of how the rest of the ghosts passed away. Aino is the opposite of aksel, when you stand too close to her, you feel colder.

There is more I could touch upon, but here you go!! My ghosts au, which I’ve been wanting to share for way too long now. You can probably spot all the ways I took inspo from the og show.

Tbh its a good thing Germania isn't alive, bc sleepovers at grandpas would be insane with this group.

You know how with cousins there is absolutely the age gap groups? The group that gets to sit at the adult table first vs the group that's gonna be at the kids table for the next decade?

and group 4 is Peter to Arvid

Karl and Kirsi got to be their own group :p (too young for the viking age cousins, too old for the America's cousins (and brother))

they have a stupid tradition when they play board games at family reunions to leave 5 extra settings(?) for the game out.

Half of them don't understand each other even if they're all speaking the same language. (Henri stopped trying to understand a single word from Jack years ago)

Because of travel and stuff they didn't see each other regularly until like 50 years ago.

Now they rarely go 2 months without a full blown get together.

Benedikte technically only has one older sibling, and Karl is obviously not around anymore. So Norways kids are basically her surrogate siblings <3

Sealand may be the adopted child of Finland and Sweden, but Åland is their biological child. The reason he's not around is because he's moved to his own apartment. It's not going too well, and he's stressed and high-strung. Åland (who always preferred Sweden to Finland) is seriously not helping. He's being a typical rebellious teenager, "I miss Dad, I hate you, why can't we just go back to Dad's place?", initiating screaming matches, etc. Meanwhile, Finland is trying his damnedest to be a loving mom dad mom other dad. Not easy to do with his own burgeoning internal conflicts (Finland broke out into a civil war just months after declaring independence). Bonus if Finland addresses Åland as "Ahvenanmaa" throughout the whole thing.

Hey, why do you think it was Sweden that Himuarya made gay? I mean, I bet gaybrights are pretty solid in the Nordic countries (I'd expect nothing less, honestly) but is there any reason you think he chose Sweden of all countries?

very good question! i think it’s pretty funny that Himuarya made Sweden gay when there’s so many countries to choose from! Personally i have noooo idea what made him do that choice, but i can give some reasons why i think he did what he did!

first i got to mention that i really appreciate that he didn’t make Sweden into the stereotypical type of homosexual man. in the early 2000’s it was very common on the internet platform to make homosexual characters into stereotypes but Himuarya didn’t go with that flow! he just made Sweden into a big, tall and scary man that just happens to like men :)

ok so here are some good reasons on WHY he choose Sweden out of all of the countries:

• Sweden leagalized same-sex marriages May 1st 2009! it’s been legal for 10 years now :) ❤️

• Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1944 and the age of consent was equalized in 1972 🎊

• Homosexuality was declassified as a mental illness in 1979 🏳️‍🌈

• Gay and lesbian couples can adopt children since 2003 👨‍👨‍👧‍👦👩‍👩‍👧‍👦

(here’s some more fun reasons why Sweden is the gay one lololol)

- notice that himuarya said that Sweden was gay for Finland and only Finland? that could be because Finland was a part of Swedne since the 1200s but later Finland became a part of Russia. history!! they have so much history together!! (besides, on the map they are legit connected 👀 norway too but eh we don’t want them anymore LOL)

- after Finland's independence from Russia in 1917, much of the state administration and higher education remained in Swedish for old tradition! that’s why all our items are both written in swedish and finish :) 🇫🇮🇸🇪 and in Finish schools it’s obligatory to learn Swedish!

- after WWII, the question about Åland came up! Åland is a group of tiny island between Sweden and Finland that both of the countries wanted to call “their own”! Åland wanted to become a part of Sweden, while Finland insisted on taking them. In the end Finland got the islands 🌴 you could kinda see Åland as their common child!

Sweden, compared to the other nordic countries, have had so much history with Finland. Sure, Sweden used to own parts of Norway as well, but that was more of a deal between the two kingdoms. Sweden and Denmark fought for many years (and the people still lowkey does) while with Finland, Sweden has always been very gentle with. its hard to explain since english isn’t my first language, but i think you get the point. Us Swedes love Finland and i think it makes a lot of sense why Aph Sweden is gay for his (ex) country !!

Okay, so I have an Åland Islands OC who is the younger sister of Finland and I need some help figuring out some things like her birthday, as all that sites I've gone to have no dates, and childhood when the islands were passed around under rules. I also am a little confused on how to deal with the whole Finland-Sweden running away thing with her in the picture. Can you possibly help me? I can submit her whole profile for critique when I finish drawing her up. Thank you for your time :)

Well, most canon characters use their National Day so in Åland’s case that would be the 9th of June(1922) for obvious reasons.

Sweden and Finland ran away from the Kalmar Union which means that it was the 16th century, depending on when your OC was “born”, how you believe nations age and how you think the union was handled there are several options for how she could have left.

She could have not been there at all but rather alone on her island similarly to how England didn’t bring America back to his place when he claimed him as his brother.

She could have left with them.

She could have left on her own, possibly by boat. It’s a little hard to say where the involved nations could have lived at the time but it shouldn’t have been too far from the sea.

King Hans, the predecessor of King Kristian the Tyrant, also both plundered and occupied the Åland Islands as the union was already becoming unruly during his time. He was most likely trying to control the Baltic Sea and/or the Swedish fleet as this is the most common reason for invading Åland(and possibly Gotland).

I was waiting for this one! I’m gonna be using my oc versions of Finland & Iceland, and since Hong Kong is already done I’m gonna use my Åland and Faroe OCs

DENMARK: Denmark got cancelled on tumblr in 2015 before cancelling was really a thing because he used “gay” as an insult in 2008 and because he got drunk once as a teenager. The internet has moved on and he’s pretty well liked again now but a few people on tiktok have brought it back.

FAROE: Faroe gets cancelled for not understanding the entire political crisis in a country she has never been to and will probably never go to. She probably just mentioned the country once and got cancelled.

FINLAND: Finland was cancelled for like a week, probably for fighting someone idk? But the very week afterwards people went back to loving her and calling her a savage queen bc the person they fought turned out to be a knobhead who probably deserved to get punched

ICELAND: unproblematic queen. She doesn’t get cancelled but she does get a lot of ableist comments bc of her mutism

NORWAY: Norway’s cancelled. I’m not sure what for, I just know he’s cancelled. Probably for being mean when objectively what he said wasn’t even that mean and loads of people have said meaner things and gotten away with it

SWEDEN: Sweden is the Bob Ross of woodworking. There’s no way he’s getting cancelled.

ÅLAND: Åland is cancelled bc she’s rich and said something kinda classist without meaning to be classist?? The internet doesn’t forget but she becomes a huge meme which makes ppl less mad about it

OI BOY I HAVE THE ANSWERS FOR YOU!!!

I have thought LONG AND HARD about what Sweden’s favourite albums are.

1. 1989

Sweden is a pop girly, so it seems absolutely fitting that Taylor’s poppiest of pop albums is his favourite.

2. Fearless (Taylor’s Version)

I absolutely agree that he started liking Taylor around the fearless era, he heard Love Story and he was hooked!!

3. Lover

A pop album called Lover??? Of COURSE Sweden loves this one.

4. Midnights

He held a listening party for this one. Åland was the only one who got an invite.

5. Red (Taylor’s Version)

This was the hardest one to settle on, but I cannot deny that Sweden probably loves 22, Message in a Bottle and the Very First Night.

Besides from Ireland, do you portray any other nation as female despite having a canon male version?

Actually, yes! I have female OCs for Northern Ireland, Finland, Iceland & Estonia. Iceland started out as a nyo, but I developed her so much she basically became an OC. The other three I set out with the intention of making an OC version instead. I might go back in develop male iceland more, bc I honestly love the idea of Finland being the only female (independent) Nordic.

I also prefer to use nyo north Italy in aus. I scarcely use aph Italy, also nyo. Nations like France, America & Spain, it’s a flip of a coin, sometimes I like to use their 1ps, but I also love their nyos.

I would’ve loved for the Philippines to be a girl too, and I much prefer Portugal original female design over his male design, but I don’t have girl versions developed for them, and don’t know enough about either country to develop female versions.

However, out of all these characters mentioned, the only two where I actively refuse to even acknowledge their male counterparts are Ireland & N. Ireland.

& in terms of OCs that aren’t canon in hetalia, the Faroe Islands, Åland, Cornwall & Northumbria (Northern England) are all also women in my mind.
