As a veteran fangirl who only got into aot 2 years ago. I have been a massive fic reader for many fandoms over the years but the sheer number of long, detailed epics in the eruri fandom needs to be studied.

The number of long cinematic fics with indepth world building that are crafted with sheer love and respect for the characters in this fandom is incredible. Usually a fandom is lucky to have few that becomes classics but there seems to be one in every corner here.

I am very grateful for your Tumblr which has been a massive archive of knowledge and guide to navigating this fandom.

Thank you so much Anon ♡ I didn't originally intend for my blog to become the Eruri archive when I first got into the series in 2015, but 9 years and 23K posts later, here we are!

You're not the first person to be struck by the sheer range of incredible writing in the Eruri fandom, to say nothing of the fanart. We've been blessed by so many amazingly talented writers over the years, and one of the most amazing things is that they just keep coming. Many people predicted the demise of the Eruri fandom when Erwin died, when the manga ended, when then final anime episode aired, but the fandom is still thriving and new writers are posting fic every month.

However as you rightly pointed out, it's not just the quantity of the fic that's remarkable, it's the quality of the writing, the characterisation and the world building. I have a few of my own theories as to why that should be. First of all the canon material is a gift. Erwin and Levi are both mature adult characters with considerable depth and nuance and their canon relationship (regardless of whether you view it as romantic or not) is intertwined with the plot. It doesn't hurt that both of them have tragic backstories and then of course there's Erwin's internal conflict, heroic sacrifice and Levi's determination to fulfil vow. Honestly what more could you ask for from a ship?? It's no surprise that 3 of the 5 most popular manga chapters chosen by readers of Bessatsu Shonen manga focus on Erwin and Levi's relationship. They really are just that good.

I also think that because Erwin and Levi are both adults, rather than typical teenage shonen protagonists, that they attract a slightly older fanbase. That's not to say that younger fans can't be amazing writers of course, many are, but I think older fans often have a range of life experience that they can bring to their writing. Also I know for a fact that there are many Eruri authors who have successful professional careers and are published authors in other fields including technical writers, academics, researchers, historians, poets, journalists and more.

I've lost count of the number of times I've heard fans say that the Eruri fandom has spoiled them because of the quality and range of the fic and art, and honestly, it's hard to disagree. I regularly re-read fics that were written a decade ago and the characterisation is still pitch perfect. Some of them even pre-empt canon events that appeared in the manga years later. At the same time, I'm discovering new authors every week who are writing heart breaking fics that provide new insight into these characters who I've loved for so long. The Eruri fandom really is one in a million and I'm very grateful it's been such an important part of my life for so long. I'm glad you're able to enjoy it too ♡

Commander Erwin Smith - he’s… alright I guess.

Before you scroll away, let me explain why I’m not as hyped around Erwin Smith as the rest of the fandom.

Even when I started watching the original anime four years ago, I barely even thought about this guy. I definitely don’t mean that in a bad way, however, there’s not much about his personality that stands out to me unlike the other veterans.

We have the lone-wolf clean freak Levi, the loony scientist Hange and hey, even Miche I liked more and he’s barely in the show (which should’ve been more) but all I remembered of Erwin is that he’s the commander of the Scouts… that’s it.

Okay, he likes to gamble with his tactical decisions, that’s okay. He has a bond with Nile, which was never brought back up again in S4. And he had a dream to prove his father’s theory was correct, which he was so close yet so far to get to. So you see, it can be very hit or miss with me personally.

Side note: Actually, I’ve seen a lot of fan projects which give Erwin some weird quirk like the other veterans that I can remember liking; much more than canon Erwin at least (especially A Slap on Titan)

I will give him this - overtime I grew attached to his voice acting performance ,cause it’s phenomenal! (talking about the English dub, sorry) Michael did a fantastic job during Erwin’s outstanding speeches, from when Erwin got his arm bitten off, to of course the suicidal charge in S3. He really brings out the raw emotions the commander was feeling in those moments.

In conclusion, before Erwin fans get me, the man is just ‘meh’ to me outside of the great voice acting. He rarely crosses my mind when I want to draw fanart or write fics unlike many other AOT characters. Sometimes I wish he was given a slight extra part to his personality than just being the strict, smart commander throughout his story.

Oh well, I guess that’s what happens when your boldness is bigger than your eyebrows.

Hi! As a relatively new JM shipper (I watched AoT in early 2023 for the first time) I say that going through JeanMarco tags here on tumblr and seeing how a good half of them are long dead or deactivated kinda puts me in a melancholic mood. Not necessarily in a bad way. I know JeanMarco is an old ship. Not as old as, say, SasuNaru or Destiel (lol), but still it's over 10 years old. I suppose most JM shippers from 2013-2014 have moved on since then and many of them nuked their tumblr accs, but I cant help but feel so jealous of those shippers who were there from the start...They saw it all! Ngl, I wish I got into JM much earlier But on the other hand, I suppose it's good that new ppl like me still join JM ship and we keep our fandom alive, even after all these years, hah =)

it's definitely bittersweet! even at one of my first anime conventions a few years after AOT came out, i was surprised to see a JM fanart print for sale 😭 i'm glad that i've had my account for a while, so a lot of that old art is in my archive (i think you might only be able to view it on a PC/laptop?)

Currently I'm a 15-year-old lass with a bit of love for certain hedgehogs and a bunch of depressed war veterans. If that didn't give it off, it's Sonic and Attack on Titan, two of which are my hyperfixations (so cool (there's also EXE)). Birthday's on the 18th of March, so yeah I'm Pisces or somethin. I also play Brawlhalla. I reached Gold 3 at most in Ranked and currently planning to unlock Loki. I'm struggling lmao

Well, that's sickening. But it really tells us all we need to know about what sorts of people hate Levi, doesn't it? They're the lowest of the low. Anyone who would say those sorts of things, making fun of someone for being disabled, calling them such childish names as "ugly" or "wheelchairman" can only possess the intellect of a dense block of wood and the character of a spineless ameba. I mean, how much do you have to hate yourself and how insecure do you have to be to attack someone for being disabled? It's easy to make fun of someone for those things, isn't it? It's what a coward would do. Going after the easy target, making fun of someone for struggling in any way. So that's what these people are, cowards, and they hate Levi because he's the opposite of that. He's everything they wish they could be, but never will be. They don't have the strength of character to be anything but frightened little weaklings, consoling themselves behind their computer screens and telling themselves they're bad-asses for pointing and laughing at a war veteran who gave his whole life for a good cause.

And knowing they're into Eren and Mikasa just drives my point home, that they can't cope with the fact that Levi is more popular than both of them, and with Eren especially, they can't cope with the reality that he ended up being the villain of the piece. They want to blame everyone else for Eren's failures and atrocities, but sad to say, it was all on Eren, in the end. And I'm positive it's a reflection of their own plight in life. They want to blame everyone else for their own failures and worthless existence, rather than take any accountability for themselves.

So the best they can come up with to try and drag Levi down is to make fun of him for being in a wheelchair and having a scarred face? I mean, it would be funny if it weren't such a testament to the true ugliness and cruelty of these people's personalities. It says nothing about Levi, and everything about them. They're bad people, and Levi's character seems to offend them by confronting them with their own wretchedness and ugliness. They could never conceive of being like that. Being a genuinely selfless, heroic person. So rather than face the hard truth about themselves, they choose to attack him and anyone who connects with him. It's typical projection. They loath themselves deep down for being what they are, and go around pretending it's everyone else' fault.

Well, fuck 'em, I say. They can continue to drown in their own misery and delusions, telling themselves lies to comfort them at night. Levi will continue to be the most popular character from AoT, and really, the most popular character period in manga/anime. People like him because he's a true hero and a genuinely kind-hearted, good person. These haters can only ever dream.
