i feel like ac s2 could have benefitted from being given more episodes to work with. like for chrissake they were taking on a plot and a subject matter that aos would have been given a full 22-episode season to tackle, you know...love triangles/quadrangles, corruption in the arena club, exterrestrial substances, multiple locations. ac s2 is the sister season to aos s3, where they were given a full 22 episodes to tackle the history of hydra and multiple locations and multiple romance subplots, and it worked!
if agent carter had been given a full 22-episode season they could have developed and built each plot point up like they did in aos, instead of jumping here and there like BAM jack is in los angeles BAM vernon is raiding the office BAM howard knows everything they need to know about roxxon BAM daniel's engaged BAM not anymore. like just the whole peggy/jason and daniel/violet romantic subplot could have been given entire episodes on their own. then you add on the misprinted premiere date and random double features (i am still shocked that apparently 2x08 and 2x09 were aired as a double feature, on top of the double episode premiere).
it's almost like they wanted the season to fail

[initial reactions] Star Trek: SNW 2x09 - Subspace Rhapsody
This was a fun musical episode! I still say Trek shows should be more than 10 episodes because there are some character beats here that feel it needs more than a few episodes to just be and breathe.
(Once again laughing that Paul Wesley managed to escape a musical in TVD only to leap headfirst into a show that would do a musical and he can't walk away. This is laughing in fun btw 'cause I do like Paul Wasilewski and his real-life snarky dry sense of humor, but also, HAHAHA. They got you, Wasilewski!)
I liked it! It wasn't Buffy the Musical, but that's okay, it was fun and it moved character arcs along!
I haven't mentioned before but I really love the medical uniform Chapel's wearing, which I think originated from Discovery s1 and 2.
I love how it took a while for Uhura to sing but when she did, she hit a breakthrough. I love that this was her episode but it wasn't just about Uhura.
The musical numbers I really enjoyed: Uhura's solo, La'an's solo, and Chapel's whole musical number. The three strongest singers of the show.
I'm glad that La'an was able to tell her secret because it was weighing on her so much and I'm glad that
Speaking of episodes where character beats needed more than 10 episodes. It's such a whiplash to go from Spock and T'Pol breaking up to Christine and Spock being together for what 2 episodes? I am glad we got Christine's song how this was something that can change her life forever. (If I'm not mistaken that guy running the program will be her ill-fated fiance). But we've gone from Christine pinint for Spock, to being ambivalent with him, to Boimler throwing cold water into the fledgling relationship with Spock. I wish we got to see Spock and Christine have just an episode or more to be in a relationship and happy.
There's not enough Pelia! (Speaking of, where are the other engineers? I know the answer is most likely covid restrictions but I wish there were some engineers working in Engineering in the background).
You know what? I've tried but I just had a thrill of happiness at all the moments Spock and Uhura were together. I know it's not as popular a ship as Spock/Kirk and Spock/Chapel but the TOS version I'm most familiar with (aside from the original TOS movies) is AOS. And since then Spock/Uhura is my ship. So, I'm just gonna embrace it. I ship them!
The Klingon boy band!
Uhura really is my favorite! I love how she started as someone uncertain of Starfleet to finding connection and family in the Enterprise even though she still felt alone at times. I love that Communications Officer is a vital part of ship's functions. Also, with the way Uhura is, it makes so much sense she makes Captain in the future. She has an air of someone who would be so good in Command.
Speaking of, I wish Discovery had these kind of fun episodes instead of one long story and I think this episode really highlighted the problem with the crew of Disco. Aside from 4 characters we really don't know the Disco crew as well as the SNW crew, I don't know what the Disco bridge crew's 'I want song'.
"I wan't" songs are, according to Playbill:
"The term is thought to have been coined by Lehman Engel, founder of the BMI Workshop for musical theatre composers, librettists, and lyricists. These songs are more than just inspiring musical numbers—in many cases, they launch the journey of a play, allowing the audience to get an inside look at force driving a character's action. They express a dissatisfaction or a dream of the character that propels them through the musical."
It's really sad that it seems season 5 is the season when the show regains their sense of fun. I hope the crew is written more of an ensemble in the final season. Disco is a good show, it just really needs to fix its ensemble writing.
Back to SNW, that was such a fun episode I'm also glad Una's taking her second chance to build more relationships and be more open with her crew. It makes sense.
BTW with all the Red in security and the Gold in Command... it occurred to me that SNW Enterprise crew probably thought Mariner and Boimler were Ops!
Anyway, that's a good episode! Good penultimate episode!

Agents of SHIELD Rewatch Season 2A (ep. 1-10)
Here's my commentary on my rewatch of Agents of SHIELD Season 2 Episodes 1-10. This may not be the best commentary since these are just the thoughts and opinions that come to my mind as I watch the episodes rather than a full-blown analysis, but I'm just having fun with it!
2x01 Shadows
PEGGYYYYYY
I wish Trip's grandfather was in this scene. Would've been so cool.
The Kree and the OG 084
Skye with bangs! *chef's kiss*
We got the introduction of Hunter, Hartley, Idaho, and Mack. And only 2 of them make it out of this episode alive.
I know we couldn't really trust Hunter back then, but his first few lines really did make me like him.
"You're the man in charge, but I'm in charge of you." YES YOU ARE, MAY
I just wanna say I love Skye's stealth outfit this season.
So did Hartley meet Hunter through Bobbi or did Bobbi meet Hunter through Hartley? Because Coulson refers to Hunter as a friend she made undercover.
BUDAPEST
I remember my first time watching this episode and being so shocked that Jemma wasn't really there.
So since Fitz was imagining Jemma, were the other scientists in the lab just ignoring him talking to himself cause none of them seemed to be really fazed by it?
The first episode of season 2 and there's already been 3 bottles of beer drunken.
Trip freaking out about the Koenigs is a mood.
Skye just misses her dad
Again, no one talks about Skye's trauma with Ward. She really did not want to go down there! She's fucking terrified!
When did Raina and Ward have time to have a conversation about Skye's dad? I mean, I know Raina told him about the monsters, but when did she ever tell him "I know Skye's dad. He's alive."
How did we go from goofy, disgruntled side character to season 5 villain with Talbot?
"Hi again" I love Melinda May.
Sometimes the military people in this show are really stupid.
Honeycomb Kill Room™
Idk about y'all, but I'm low-key getting red flags when Fitz referred to himself as the team golden boy. Like, relax, Koenig is literally just doing his job. I'm trying to not think about my dislike towards Fitz in later seasons, but the more I watch earlier seasons, I see more aspects of him that I really don't like.
Absolutely love every moment Shield plays Talbot.
Was it ever established if Hartley and Idaho were in on the whole Real Shield thing?
The way May turns to Skye and says "Let's stick together." I love these Mama May moments.
Was I the only one who low-key shipped Skye and Trip this season? Cause I totally did.
"Talbot out."
Okay, but honestly, Creel wasn't that hidden. I'm pretty sure it's easy to see abs on a wall.
NO HARTLEY DON'T!
"Cut it off" This line foreshadowed many more scenes to come in this series
"Have you seen what they've done with robotics these days?" "Probably an upgrade." We really got the Coulson robo hand foreshadowing 21 episodes prior.
So how long was Creel waiting for the Shield car to just pull up in the middle of the road?
And goodbye Hartley and Idaho :(
2x02 Heavy is the Head
Can we talk about how May wanted to get Hunter out of the car and save him from being captured by soldiers before going after Creel?
I needed more of May on the motorcycle aka Lola's Boyfriend™ (if you know, you know)
"I know. And we just retired the bathrooms."
I love Mack. He always has faith in people even when other people don't 100% believe in them.
I know Coulson is trying to protect Skye, but leaving her in the dark about the alien writing wasn't the best call.
It's canon that Mack likes singing in the shower.
I never noticed halluci-Jemma checking Mack out😂
I wonder if when she was looking at the picture of Izzy and her sister, Skye was thinking about the family she never had.
Oh, there's my answer. Hunter and Hartley met each other through Bobbi.
RAINAAAAA
"I doubt it. The guy's jacked, and he can turn any body part into any material." Oh, Skye, I love you. Also, this line catches me off guard every single time😂
"Beat it. You're pissing him off!" Said to the extra scientists who haven't done or said anything.
"How did we get the nonlethal option?" "Coin flip. Trip called tails." I love these little small lines.
Hunter made the biggest mistake ever, and that mistake was icing May.
"Aw HELL no"
Hunter, you idiot. You just don't go stalking up in public in broad daylight, guns blazing.
We love the callback to the device in 1x07.
"Is Coulson okay?" "Of course." "WhAt Is WrOnG wItH yOu??"
And there's Skye's daddy. Cal seemed so much scarier in 2a, but he just turns into a lovable character in 2b. I love him.
"Can I call you Glenn?" "No. Where's Hunter." "Watching Cake Boss." Idk why but this exchange is hilarious to me.
"Let's get out of here before the iceberg runs out of fuel."
Talbot was so close to the quinjet. I wished he ran into it.
2x03 Make New Friends and Influencing People
This whole brainwashing thing is so creepy. I hate it.
So sad that Kara was actually a really good and loyal Shield agent before Hydra.
Okay, but this whole opening with Jemma is adorable, and I love it.
When I first watched this, I had no doubts in my mind that she wasn't undercover. I mean, Simmons would never be with Hydra.
"I pretended they were all Ward." HA
Thinking about how May telling Skye that her shots weren't puny probably made Skye really happy because as a kid, she was hardly complimented or rewarded for a job well done.
"Don't be sorry. Just wait." She says while holding a massive sniper rifle.
"Experience doesn't make it any easier to cross someone off." Ooh, the Bahrain references. This season, you guys! THIS SEASON!
I still feel bad for Donnie Gil. He was just a kid who was manipulated then brainwashed by Hydra and has a power that was taken advantage of.
Coulson once again in Full Dad Mode™
See, I understand Jemma and why she left. She wanted to help Fitz and truly did care about him, he was her best friend after all, but she ended up not helping him and making him worse, so she left. She also needed time to work on herself and come to terms with what had happened. She was at the bottom of the ocean too. Not just Fitz. I understand that Fitz does need help and support, but so does Jemma. It's not fair that people say they hate Jemma for leaving him because they are basically saying it was her job to make sure he was okay.
"I wasn't loyal to Hydra. I was loyal to Garrett." THAT'S THE SAME FUCKING THING.
"My family tore me down." Yeah, so did every foster family Skye had ever had, and she turned out to be a ridiculously nice person. She didn't even have anyone to build her back up, but she still turned out good. God, I hate Ward so much.
I also fucking hate the people that said Skye should've been more sympathetic and should've comforted him. HE LITERALLY KIDNAPPED AND MANIPULATED HER AND EVEN THREATENED TO DO EVEN WORSE. NOT TO MENTION ALL THE PEOPLE HE KILLED OF HIS OWN FREE WILL. It was not her job to change him. She deserved so much better than be turned into Ward's object in the eyes of these "fans".
I also noticed that Ward sympathizers/SkyeWard shippers still refer to her as Skye even after she changed her name to Daisy, literally ignoring all the character growth she had done to reach that name and why giving up the name Skye and becoming Daisy was so important. (I'm only calling her Skye rn since that's what she is called in s2)
Love how Hunter is trying to psych Skye out of jumping out of the plane, but her heartbeat remains steady.
Also, I have mixed feelings about the whole Ward/Fitz cell scene. I obviously don't agree with Ward in one slightest bit, but Fitz was acting impulsively. Granted, he did get information out of Ward.
"WhAt ThE hElL? I jUsT tOoK OuT tHe BoOmErS!!"
I just wanna sing "Let it Go" this entire episode.
Skye's heartbeat was steady when she killed Donnie, but I really wished we could've seen the aftermath of it, and how it affected Skye taking her first life. They do briefly, but it turns into something about Simmons being undercover and not Skye's own psyche.
"We're even, right?" "We are." I love Trip's face in the background. Wish he never died so he could've gotten even.
"Reminds me of before." Aw Skyeeeee
Again, we don't talk about Skye's trauma with Ward. Her heartbeat was steady when killing someone and jumping out of a plane, but the second Ward pulls the 'your dad is alive' card, he gets under her skin and freaks her out.
2x04 Face My Enemy
Let's go! I frickin love this episode!
"Five Finger Discount"
MAY IN THAT DRESS!
I absolutely love how quickly May changes her face from smiling to absolutely hating everything. She just does not want to be there😂
Also, I love how May laughing is its own whole scene and joke.
As a former competitive dancer, I want to take the dance elective at Shield Academy.
This episode is one of the few where the team has major sibling vibes.
This undercover May is still so jarring, but I love it.
"Maybe Talbot's still pissed cause we kidnapped him that one time."
"YO!" *PUNCH*
Coulson was so ready to show off his skills in front of May.
May's remark when Talbot says "I've been thinking." She knows what's up.
"You liked it." "No, I didn't." "A little bit?" "A little bit."
Psycho Living in Our Basement™
Love that they brought back the nano mask from Winter Soldier. Absolutely love Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Black Widow, but Agents of Shield did it first.
As much as I dislike Fitz, I really relate to him here. I have really bad social anxiety and talking to people is so, so, so difficult for me. I either have nothing to add to the conversation, or I want to say something, but I can never get the words to form to get it out. Even online, I'm constantly rereading everything I want to say.
Bakshi really thinks he has the upper hand on Melinda May? Bitch, please.
Love how Coulson automatically knows that she isn't May. He knows his wife best friend.
Why did I get excited for Skye and Mack literally just standing next to each other? I know they don't even get close until literally the end of the season, but I just love my big brother Mack and little sister Daisy dynamic.
All I can think about when I see the elevator opening is the blooper where Clark and Ming are kissing.
WHO IS THAT GIRL I SEE STARING STRAIGHT BACK AT ME~
^I love Mulan way too much😅
YESSSS MAYYYYY
Watching the Live With Lil' of this episode with the stunt double from this episode makes me appreciate the May vs May fight even more than before (and I always LOVED that fight scene so much. It's probably one of my top favorite fights.)
The move May does off the coffee table is very similar to a ballet move that I can't remember the name of, but the dancer in me really likes that.
"wE gOtTa Go" Idk why but the way Coulson runs in is so funny to me.
Ugh, okay, this moment between Fitz, Mack, and Hunter is very sweet, but I hate the way Fitz presents Simmons to them. He gives them an image of her that they see in a bad light. They don't even have the full story and Jemma's not there to defend herself.
"Some people are better in small doses." YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN! That's probably why I like season 7 so much since Fitz is only in the last 3 episodes.
Love how May's plan to protect Coulson is to send him to a cabin. And what does he do when Skye needs protecting? Sends her to a cabin.
2x05 A Hen in the Wolf House
BOBBI TIME
This wedding opening is so funnily random (is funnily a word? who cares, it is now.)
UGH just tell Skye already. She deserves to actually know and not be spied on.
Again, Cal was so much scarier in 2a
And now the dude's dead.
"Pretty awesome, right?" What the hell is wrong with this guy?
"I wAs A fAt BaBy"
Fish Tacos~
THERE SHE IS! We love you, Bobbi.
I love Bobbi so much. This is the only thing I will talk about for this episode haha.
I love how protective the whole team is of Skye.
HAIR FLIP
Ooh, Cal's not gonna like that. Skye's got another dadddd.
May's hand on Jemma's shoulder when she sees Fitz again
I was too invested in this episode to commentate haha😅
I love May's face in the background when Bobbi and Hunter were arguing.
"bObBi?!?!"
Also, did Trip really not know Hunter and Bobbi were married? He seemed to know Bobbi pretty well in the quinjet.
"wHy ThE hElL wOuLd YoU dO tHaT?"
2x06 A Fractured House
Why did they have to start with a scene of Ward working out??😑
"We're not responsible for this, are we?" You'd think they'd all be aware if they had a mission in killing government officials. But this is so funny how they're all like "WaS iT uS?"
"Guess being a douchebag runs in the family."
WHO CARES ABOUT THE WELL ANYMORE WARD. BASED ON WHAT YOU'VE DONE, YOU DON'T GET TO USE THE WELL ANYMORE
I don't like particularly like Jemma this season because of how she acts when Skye gets her powers and her low-key xenophobia, but I truly feel bad for her in terms of Fitz. She's not allowed to express her feelings. She's treated like she owes Fitz something. Yes, he saved her life, and she really did want to help him, but she only made him worse, so she did what she felt was best for both her and Fitz.
"It's funnier now."
I think both Ward and Christian have some truth to their sides. I do believe Christian forced him to throw Thomas down the well, but I also believe that Ward had a dark side as a kid and still chose to make these decisions.
Am I supposed to feel bad for Ward? Cause I don't.
One thing I miss after Bobbi and Hunter left is the Bobbi and May team up fights.
"Don't die out there."
I love that Jemma stood in front of Skye, protecting her from Ward. Why she couldn't do that in season 5 is beyond me. Maybe because she was personally affected by him, but as soon as Fitz did something bad to her best friend, she chooses the abuser over the victim. Ugh, not looking forward to season 5.
They gave him an inch, Coulson.
2x07 The Writing on the Wall
Is there not security that checks you for weapons at a bus station? I'd feel like they'd treat it almost like an airport. (As you can see, I've never been to a bus station) How the hell did Ward get in with all those bombs?
Love how easy they were able to get a dead body😂
Bobbi, aren't you supposed to be one of the best spies? How come you've been on the same page the entire time? Ward's really good too. Why didn't you turn the page? Even when I'm pretending to read something, I'm scrolling down or turning pages.
I need more of Hunter dressed as a cowboy.
Project TAHITI is scarier now
Ward going back to Hydra proves that he is not a good person. I get he was doing that to give Bakchi to Coulson, but still.
THE TRANSITION FROM THE KILLER TO COULSON!!!
May definitely not only yelled at Coulson for going into the memory machine but also for putting things onto Skye while she was in charge of him.
*lets Fitz play the video game* "It's good for you."
"YoU wErE dReSsEd LiKe A cOwBoY!"
DID HE JUST LOCK THAT GUYS FAMILY IN A CLOSET?
Okay but that guy was smart to cut the rope on the nail. I wouldn't have thought of that.
HE STILL GOT HIS SPY INSTINCTS
It's so hard to see Mack during this season. There's obviously this rift between him and Skye because of the alien DNA. Love that they became partners in season 3 because next to MayDaisy, their relationship is my favorite.
2x08 The Things We Bury
JIAYING!
"What are we gonna do, storm Oahu?"
Why does the Hawaii mission seem so chaotic?
"You ever want kids?" *slowly takes the object out of pocket*
Jemma being the biggest Peggy Carter fangirl is the cutest thing ever.
PEGGYYYY
Still kinda crazy how (I believe) Peggy Carter and Jiaying have canonically met. Even crazier when Jiaying's daughter (Daisy) ends up dating Peggy's ex (Sousa).
I couldn't care less about the whole Ward and Christian side plot in this episode
I love the whole progression of Whitehall's cell scene
ALL THOSE PEOPLE ARE FROM THE HUNAN VILLAGE
So it is revealed that Bobbi fears judgment, right? She does regret giving up the safe house where Kara was. That was established, right?
Okay, but Christian is right. Ward believes himself to be a hero, but really he is a terrible villain who couldn't care less about human life.
"Man With a Plan" Was Trip referencing the song from CA:TFA?
Um, yes, Cal, Phil is in fact the closest thing Skye has to a father, so I think it's best you don't hurt him.
Anyone in this show who says "the end justifies the means" is always in the wrong.
I was so scared Trip was going to die this episode the first time I watched this. I was relieved when he lived but then 2x10 had to come in and take it all away.
I've binged this show so many times, and I always forget about the whole vivisection of Jiaying scene. I like literally suppress that scene.
YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND WARD. YOU KNOW NOTHING OF SACRIFICE!
I don't know why but the cut from Bobbi and Hunter to them making out in front of the car is so funny to me.
This scene always makes me giddy. Like... THAT"S SKYE'S MOM!
2x09 Ye Who Enter Here...
Okay, but this dream sequence! Not only do we get a little insight into what might have happened in the Hunan Province, but we also get the confirmation that mom and dad in Skye's mind have sort of been filled by May and Coulson.
Also ANGEL EYES
"Of course, I'm her SO"
This is one of the only times Simmons is allowed to share her side of the story without any biases. She also refers to him as her best friend. Why isn't she allowed to want him to be a best friend? She doesn't owe him her feelings. It's not like she doesn't care. Ugh the whole Fitzsimmons thing this season is so frustrating.
"You're a big brother, but you're not my big brother." Um, in the happy domestic timeline au I have in my head, Mack is everyone's big brother. Except obviously Yoyo's since the two of them are soulmates.
"CaLl An AmBuLaNcE, tHiS gUy JuSt PaSsEd OuT!"
THIS EPISODE IS SKYE'S FIRST HAND-TO-HAND FIGHT!
"Whot the hell is that?" "May's evil twin."
"Ooh hats!"
This is why I love Coulson! He really does care for human life.
I'm like on the bridge on whether or not I actually want to be in a car with May. I feel like she's a good driver, but in this episode, she's so aggressive.
"YoU kNoW sHe StIlL hAs My FaCe?"
"Where's your friend Diego go?" All I could think of is GO DIEGO GO!
Mack low-key being afraid of the ghost story is a mood and totally sets up his hatred for robots and basically everything he's about to experience in the coming years.
MAMA MAYYY
2x10 What We Become
Yayyy, this is my fav season 2 episode. Except for, you know, Trip dying.
This is another episode I'm too invested in, so I might not say a lot😅
So why did Cal decide to tell Skye that Jiaying was dead?
That whole "Bicycle Built For Two" song was already creepy because of Cal, but TikTok made it even more creepy.
I just wanna punch Ward.
YESS SKYE YOU BEAT THOSE HYDRA AGENTS
Ooh, Coulson, Cal's not gonna like that.
DAISY! HE SAID IT!
Skye crying over Coulson gets me every time. It's not your fault Skye!
DANG IT TRIP WHY DID YOU HAVE TO GO BACK DOWN!
QUAKE THEME QUAKE THEME QUAKE THEME QUAKE THEME
The Quake Theme is literally my favorite score from this series.
How does Skye look so great after going through terrigenesis? Like, my god I want whatever the terrigen has.
WHY DO YOU HAVE TO SHOW TRIP FALLING APART EVERY TIME UGH!!!!!!!
And Gordon. No matter how many ties I see him, he creeps me out.

Rewatching Ye Who Enter Here
Tumblr media
By the end of this episode we have:
a possibly dead or dying Mack
Skye kidnapped and headed to meet her deranged father and the sadist who vivisected her mother
May, Trip and Hunter (and the Koenigs) aboard an airplane marked for destruction.
That’s half the cast in potentially lethal jeopardy. Just another regular Tuesday on AoS 😁
I think the earlier seasons did the “team is split to concurrent missions” better: in later seasons it’s often just 2 or 3 characters together, which feels claustrophobic and small scale. It works for S5, not so much for S6 when S.H.I.E.L.D. is supposedly a real agency again and not just the core agents making do. Here both contingents - Team Coulson in Puerto Rico and Team May in Vancouver - are big enough to still feel like a “team”.
The equal splitting involves the pairings (in a “usually working together” capacity, not romantic 😊), too. FitzSimmons and Trip and Skye stay together on their respective missions, while Bobbi and Hunter are separated and so are May and Coulson, due to their leading duties.
Of course FitzSimmons take the opportunity to decide - well, it’s a unilateral decision made by Fitz, really - to (sort of) go their separate ways professionally. It’s not the lowest point of their relationship yet but for two people who had been inseparable since they were sixteen it’s still absolutely huge and not in a good way.
Tumblr media
Stuff that crossed my mind:
AoS hitting the ceiling in the literary titles department as Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here is of course the inscription on the gates of hell in Dante’s Divine Comedy. Overdramatic much?😄
Bye, bye, Angel Eyes. Skye’s dream is really not subtle, is it? Alone and abandoned in her latest home (the base), and Suburban Philinda are her parents.
As deceptive scanning devices go, mini Lola is by far the cutest.
I recommend a week of solid bed rest. -- Bed rest? Where’s that in the S.H.I.E.L.D. handbook? Nowhere, apparently. How is he already on his feet and, more importantly, why? He was shot twice and had an artery cut. 😱
My dad, Ward, the Obelisk, the city...it’s all messed up. And I just can’t shake this vibe that something really bad is about to happen. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to shake quite a bit fairly soon...😎
Nothing but positive thoughts from here on out. *knocks the table*. That’s not wood, is it? Ah, now I see where things went wrong. Fake wood veneer is the culprit.
Based on our latest intel, there's something very powerful inside it, a weapon. And by “latest intel” he of course means the deranged ramblings of Skye’s father.
And then what, sir? -- We blow the hell out of it. Straightforward and destructive. I like it.
Why hasn’t Hydra fixed Kara’s face? Any other consideration aside, the scar makes her too noticeable and memorable for undercover work.
*hears about May electrocuting Kara’s face* Oh, that is so badass. *hears May is headed to his location*. He’s sending The Cavalry. Sweet! Where Sam is all of us.
All we can do now is try and catch Ward. -- Or put the son of a bitch down. I’m genuinly impressed that there’s an “or” about it.
You don't want Skye anywhere near that city, do you? -- It's not the city I'm afraid of. It's her lunatic father. Keep an eye on her, okay? -- Of course. I'm her S.O. Right. You’re her S.O., he’s her Director... It’s all very professional. 🤭
It’s Bobbi’s turn to tackle the Case of FitzSimmons. I like her intervention more than Mack’s however her advice -- be honest -- seems a bit ironic considering the state of things between her and Hunter.
Your best friend. -- I never thought of him as anything else. Right there with you, Jem. However, everyone else - on and off screen - seems fairly convinced that’s not the way forward.
I’ll see you there. Sir. Why the surprised face, Phil? Didn’t you ever hug Fury when leaving for a mission? Perfectly standard professional behaviour here too, nothing to see. 🤭
I’m just wondering if it means you’re bringing Hunter in on the other thing. -- That? No. [...] No, he has no idea. And I’d like it to stay that way. So, did she recommend him to Coulson with the mission in mind as he suspects and now has changed her mind or did she have no ulterior motives and was just trying to be helpful? 🤔
Stand down, Agent 33! We can help you! This is the one and only attempt by anyone in S.H.I.E.L.D. to treat Kara as a victim and not an enemy, at least until she’ll be at the base. Am I surprised that it comes from Skye and that it nearly got her killed? No, on both counts.
You ever had the fried plantains here? -- Tostones? Yeah. Why? -- I read about this place down the street where they put crab in them. I wouldn't mind trying that. More proof that he’s a foodie.
Ooh. Hats. Wish I was a hat guy. Some guys can really pull that look off, you know? What? Too small? Bobbi’s look is priceless. The Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. on the eve of a critical operation, acting like a regular tourist.
There are 3 million people on this island, and I won't let HYDRA turn them into collateral damage. -- With all due respect, sir, this kind of op, Fury would have a number. -- A number? -- Of acceptable losses. -- My number is zero. For the record, I hate that phrase. Bobbi’s line of questioning obviously gains a whole new meaning when you know she’s working for Real Asshole S.H.I.E.L.D.
Minimize destruction? You really aren't Fury, are you? -- Come on, Bobbi. You ought to know me by now. Well, clearly not enough to not indulge into Gonzalez’s and the Council of Hufflepuffs’ paranoia.
You just need more time to heal and -- I've had time, and I'm not better, so you should run the lab and I can work for you. I just can't work with you. And I think that's what's best. *heavy sigh* this is made worse by the fact that he is, in fact, getting better and we just saw it last episode.😞
Maybe he thinks you know something about the Obelisk. How it works. -- Are you saying Whitehall has the Diviner? [...] Well, that changes things. You know, it might have been more prudent not to tell her that... 😏
Honestly, everything that we've been through, I don't know what to believe anymore. Honey, it’s barely the middle of season 2...trust me, you have seen nothing yet.
The story is, several of the guards went missing in the middle of the night from this tower, never to be seen again. They simply vanished. It's all preposterous, really. -- Yeah. About as preposterous as an alien city. Poor Mack, always caught up in the weird despite his better judgement. And in a few minutes they’re gonna send him down there. All alone.😒
Does he get emotional? Yes. Violent, even? Yes. But he's also quite misunderstood. That’s one way of putting it...
Before I met your father, I was a lost soul with no clue of where I belonged. -- The daughter he never had. -- No. No one could ever replace you, Skye. You're all he wants. Somehow, I’m not sure this is coming across as comforting.
I’m not scared of heights. That’s not what you’ll say in S5!
Be honest, Skye. Haven't you ever felt lost or had that feeling that you were part of something bigger? Like you were special? I don’t know about her, but I have always felt that she was special, yes. 😎
Something bad is about to happen. And this is different from your daily lives how...?
Anyone shoots, the plane goes down. We all die. -- Maybe it's worth it. -- Let's not get carried away just yet. Where Hunter is me.
May, if I don't go with him, he's gonna blow this plane to pieces. [...] There's no other way. You know that. Whatever happens, I can handle myself. Yeah, besides she almost died once already a full twenty minutes ago, I think we’re due for another bout of mortal peril.
Oh, Skye, don’t forget your tablet. You know what would be really useful? A nice, easy and quick, “brick the tablet” button.
Bravo 4. You have a go. Shoot them down. Repeat: shoot them down. Meh. Like that’s gonna be enough. Silly Hydra.

Started rewatching hsmtmts, got through the first 4 eps last night (I like to think of that set as Act I), some thoughts this morning:
If I were to knuckle down and actually investigate the sensation I had of "S1 jokey S2 earnest," my thesis would be that it's a product of the show changing its content rather than visual style. There's no incidental jokes at Miss Jenn's financial state in S2, for example, or jokes about Big Red's reading competency, etc.
(Not a condemnation of S1's comedy style, just an observation of one of the ways the tone changed between seasons. The subjective point I'm making, though, is that, yes, for this and other reasons, I personally find more to engage with in S2)
On the topic of visual styles, though, the whip-pan talking-head transition is still being developed in Act I. In Tamra Davis' episodes (1-3), we would either lead in with VO dialogue and cold cut to the speaker, or just cold cut. Maybe two or three times we whip-panned out of the segment. I appreciated and was surprised to see the leading VO, because it's very documentary in spirit, and I noticed it a lot in the ep of Parks and Rec I studied -- because it stood out -- because later hsmtmts doesn't do this at all. I'll keep an eye on it, but my gut instinct is that the whip-pan transition fully supplants it.
Chad Lowe, director of the 4th ep, did a whip-pan transition into a talking head, but even he didn't do it every time.
These were the only episodes of the show helmed by either of these directors, and I'm curious about the behind the scenes events that lead to this eventually. Like, were they not invited back, and why?*
The director names I associate with the show (because their work stands out) are Kimberly McCullough, Paul Hoen, and Joanna Kerns, who each directed 7, 4, and 6 episodes, respectively.
Looks like Tamra Davis got her start in the New Wave music video scene, so I'm guessing they wanted to make their opening statement using the skills of someone who knew their way around a musical number.
Maybe I was tired or maybe I'm starting to become burnt out on the show, or maybe honestly I've put S2 on such a high pedestal that it's harder to recognize that S1 is also perfect for being exactly what it is, but I wasn't impressed with the Act I cinematography xD. I'm thinking of Paul Hoen's impeccable blocking, or Kimberly McCullogh's attention to visual elements that define the tone of a scene, the details you don't notice at first but can still be dissected for intent and meaning. I'm not sure that I saw anything worth studying (to that degree) last night. I did see some stuff that made me go :///
In conclusion, the visual style of S1 (in its infancy, at least) leans more towards functional than artistic. It is my opinion that S2 episodes (maybe not all, I can be fair!) have a functional and artistic look.
PS, Homecoming is the next ep, and that's the one I was blogging about that one time like "THESE WHIP-PANS ARE V LOUD" so maybe it's a noticeable difference because that technique hadn't really been used yet; maybe this was the episode that made it a standard tool in the show's toolbox. Everybody thank Joanna Kerns.
Oh gosh. The rest of the season is directed by either Kerns or McCullough (or both); the exception being the final two, directed by Kabir Akhtar. The six episodes of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on his filmography are what stand out to me.
*I think to be guild-friendly you have to allot a percentage of your credits to freelancers outside your salaried team. I think this is true for SAG, assuming that it's the same for directing credits? That would explain Chad Lowe as a one-off. After that, they kept it in-house and really let all the flavors come together, and then had a "here's how it's done" framework that subsequent new/guest directors could emulate. That's my guess.
Remind me to go back through sometime and pay attention to the writers and their individual styles. The only one that truly stands out in my mind is whoever was responsible for the dialogue in 2x09. The Gina & Jack and Ricky & Ricky's Mom concepts were expertly conceived and presented, but the conversations Nini had with Kourtney and Ashlyn were so full of under-researched zoomer jargon that I could see that poor Olivia and Dara and Julia were like "what is my character even saying rn?????" So I'd love to dig into different writers to look how they, idk, tackle story structure, or who's got the most authentic character voices, or who does what with integrating the themes of the borrowed musical numbers into the plots that contain them, stuff like that. Or a study of when the jokes stopped being as barbed and/or how the ratio of jokes:touching moments shifted over time!!!!!
Or how often and when is the screaming marching band whistle theme used, and to indicate what!!!! Was it used appropriately to signal the final moments of S2, per the established style guide, or had the show already evolved past that point and they failed to structure the episode accordingly so that its raucous rum-pum-pum didn't undercut the emotional highlight of the season???!!!
This show still has so much to unpack, you guys.
Shame I need to stop watching it and do my annual AoS rewatch instead XD XD XD

Adventures of Sinbad Masterpost
Finding anything on tumblr is a pain, so I have compiled a list of links to my episode commentary and meta for The Adventures of Sinbad, the delightfully low-budget action-adventure fantasy ‘90s TV series of my childhood--for my own reference, if no one else’s.
Before you ask, yes, I know episodes 1x03-1x07 are missing, I did them out of order a few years ago back when this blog was entirely devoted to AOS, and never got around to them. Now the fan site where I got my high-quality screenshots from appears to be defunct, so it makes doing the other ones trickier.
Fun fact: I started watching the show at episode 8, and look where I ended up today, lol.

Agent H’s AOS Rewatch
S2E10 “What They Become”
I wrote this out during the actual rewatch week, but I didn’t realize I never posted it! Boy, did this get long.
-I had to do a liveblog of this episode because it’s one of my favorites of the season, and we get SKYE’S TRANSFORMATION!
-Okay, so @the fandom who were around back then: at what point did people guess they were doing a terrigenesis/Inhumans storyline? Because I only learned that’s what they were doing via the internet frenzy after the episode was over
Ward, May, Coulson, and HYDRA
-MAY’S. EPIC. FLYING. FUDGE YYYYEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHH. This is so fucking brilliant of her, dead-dropping the plane and then cloaking.
-”I would put two of these (bullets) in his heads”. Plus, Coulson always looking at the good side: “you saved six agents”.  I didn’t do a liveblog of  2x09, but that conversation with Bobbi about acceptable casualties is SO IMPORTANT and vital to who Coulson is and the show overall and you know that’s the moment Bobbi truly supported Coulson.
-Good callback: Before Coulson freaked out that Skye was taken. Now he’s confident that she’ll be able to handle herself until they can get in there.
-”Hand me your side arm, let’s find out”-Skye
-Is Ward’s personality shift (though still a psychopath) this first half of the season because he’s lost without Garrett or because he believes he can be redeemed through helping Skye? Both?
-Yass queen, pick up the diviner
- I loved seeing the bad guys maneuvering around each other in Season 2a, and all of that coming to a head this episode. But I don’t know why Ward and Skye and all attacked and then they just stopped. I think they could have taken the HYDRA goons easily
-“Never turn your back on the enemy.” You know I’m glad Skye shot Ward too. It’s closure on his belief that she can redeem him that’s been carrying him through these last ten episodes.
-I never realized that Agent 33′s voice was distorted
-HYDRA, SHIELD, and the aos writers treated Kara so badly, and I am yelling shame and ringing the bell at all of them.
Hunter and Bobbi
-“If he really is dead, the number of people I trust on this planet, just plummeted.” The Huntingbird hug is so beautiful! How strong Bobbi pretends to be (“Whenever this is all over, I’m gonna cry for like a week”= so real) and how she lets herself go with Hunter. She’s so surprised by the hug at first, and I love how much taller she is than him. He knows about the flashdrive, but he tries to comfort her anyway and that makes me sad and touched.
-”Diego’s early and he’s wearing a suit.”-Bobbi
-The kiss! Ugh, Huntingbird really does fill all the classic OTP tropes
-”Don’t die out there.” “He likes to hear it.” “Who doesn’t like to hear it??”
-”Join SHIELD, travel to excotic distant people, meet exciting unusal people, and kill them” -Hunter
Fitz, Simmons, Tripp, and the Koenigs
-Bahahaha, the Koenigs, His little thumbs up and Hunter rolling his eyes for his life (Hunter would die in the middle of saying something sarcastic, and I will stake my life on that). Also good reuse of the pod units but this time for good (rather than, you know, bottom of the ocean and dying). Sidenote, did we see the pods anytime before Skye gets shot?
-I love Fitzsimmons working together (finally) in the holding cell. I love how the minute they say they’re not gonna work together anymore, they have to work together. Here, they’re so polite but also they’ve got such a natural rhythm. Simmons seems like she wants to talk about them but he’s like oh no, wasn’t talking about myself! Fitz is both back to himself and also gotta new groove (his recovery is going well!). Simmons being genuinely worried for Mack. FITZ’s LOOK OF LOVE
-I only appreciated it on this rewatch, but the show has good continuity of Fitzsimmons/team vs alien tech/bio. They spend majority of season 1 finding 084s and researching their properties and learning how they interact with human biology. Then second season plays off the events of the first season: they’ve seen how many times alien tech/biology is dangerous and they’ve seen it infect and kill so many people. It makes perfect sense why Simmons and the others would be cautious about this alien stuff (Fitz is the loyal one, remembering that this is their friend they’re talking about it and he’s got (blind) faith when it comes to his friends). Season 2 is like introduction to actual aliens (as opposed to relics/artifacts/Asgardians) and how human Inhumans are. Season 3 builds on that further by exploring the good and bad sides of Inhumans.
-I didn’t do a liveblog of the previous episode, but Fitz’s “If you’re looking for vacation time, bribery will get you nowhere. I’ve tried.” is golden. I like the little character traits they give Fitz like, in addition to being a literal genius and all the trauma he’s faced, he’s just a quietly disgruntled SHIELD employee who just wants vacation time and warmer AC (re: season 4)
-Howling Commando gear!!!!!
-Aww, Tripp flirting with Simmons and Fitz is just like…
-The Koenig cloning jokes, hahaha (Poor Tripp)
-First mention of Theta protocol! Dun dun dunnn
-We don’t know what the alien tech is. But Hazmat suits should do the job. :)
-I remember the Fitz splitting off scene being hilarious. Is it because he’s miffed at the flirting, miffed at Simmons, or just genuinely proving that he can do things now?
-Simmons touching Fitz’s arm. And then him holding her later!!!
Cal and Skye
-Cal and Skye’s meeting! This is an emotional, painful reunion.
-I LOVE the actor who plays Cal, he does fantastic job. Seriously how did they get him and Dichen Lachmann to play her parents?? Well done, casting director
-I love that they make Skye biracial just like how Chloe Bennet is and it’s relevant to her storyline
-So to recap Skye’s backstory. Her mother is taken by Whitehall but is released when he gets captures in the 40s. She’s born to her parents, but Whitehall captures Jiaying again. Cal rescues Jiaying, and they return, but HYDRA had already taken Skye as an 084 (?). SHIELD teams led by Audrey then take care of SKye until she is given to an orphanage. Correct?
-”People liked me. I liked myself.” This line deserves much meta
-Teach you about the stars= Inhumans. I love how that’s a total throwaway innocent line, but it all makes sense once you know.
-Just when Skye has figured out life as a SHIELD spy, her world gets rocked again. But I think this path is a good development because she’s not just a regular SHIELD agent: She was born on the outside; learned to think in unusual ways; she’s bubbly and warm and compassionate when SHIELD agents before were typically taught to be rationale and merciless. She’s born to be a new kind of SHIELD agent as well as the bridge between Inhumans and SHIELD
-The lullaby :(
-”Best Day Ever” -Cal
-I mean the emotional manipulation of “After you change I’m the only one who’ll understand” is bad, but he was right in the sense that they all were afraid of her
-Skye wanting to stop the drill and get the obelisk as a way of making it up to Coulson and because she’s a good SHIELD agent. But, like, she knows that’s what her father wanted, so does she just believe she won’t get caught up in whatever is going on? Does she go because fate is pulling her? Does this show believe in fate?? *thinks about all the future time-travelling shenanigans and gets a headache*
THAT ENDING THO
-The thing with Mack presumed dead freaking broke my heart, but it’s a good  fake out to blindside us with Tripp’s death.
-IMO, the obelisk is a good fake out for terrigenesis crystals. Even if I knew about Inhumans stuff before hand, I wouldn’t have put it together through what info they give us on the obelisk in previous episodes
-THE TRANSFORMATION. “”WHAT WE BECOME” AKA THE QUESTION THAT WAS ASKED WAY BACK IN SEASON ONE IS FINALLY GETTING ANSWERED. AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH. The chanting, man. Is it the same one we’ve heard before?
- “I gotta admit I’m just the tiniest bit nervous.” I could write an essay on why I love this line.
-SKYE’S TRANSFORMATION. IT’S SO POWERFUL AND SO HEARTBREAKING. THEY’RE BOTH JUST TRYING TO SAVE EACH OTHER. I’M CRYING.
-I probably just need to rewatch this again, but why didn’t anything happen to Tripp when the terrigenesis first activated but then he gets hurt when he gets hit?  Like is it the terrigenesis won’t hurt him, but touching the crystals/obelisk will?
-Ya’ll are gonna hate me for this, but... I get why Tripp had to die. Like, it devastated me and still does and its racist and HE DID NOT DESERVE IT. But from the storyline POV, I see why he was chosen to die. Tripp was incorporated into the story in season 1 to replace Ward. We needed an action guy on the team because half the team is non-combat and we needed someone who was genuinely good to balance out the real Ward. But season 2, everyone’s shifted roles. We have Daisy, Hunter, Bobbi who all fill the action roles, so Tripp’s primary role is no longer necessary. He’s (intentionally?) underdeveloped: he does a variety of things, but he’s not filling any one role nor is he vital in any specific relationship, the way Coulson, May, Fitzsimmons, and Skye are, and he doesn’t contribute to the season’s plot the way Hunter, Bobbi, and Mack do. Plus, it’s a really shitty symbolism of how the show is progressing to darker tones by killing of their sunshine boy.
-Anyway, I cant believe they just end like that for a mid-season finale. Top ten moments of superhero genre, without question. Also, is this the first time we here’s Daisy’s theme song? Because I’ve mentioned before how powerful and sad-sounding it is
-GORDON!!!!!!!

Rewatch of 2x09, “Ye Who Enter Here”
Favorite scene(s):
- Jemma taking care of Trip and asking about Skye’s dad
- The Koenigs helping a very reluctant Raina escape from Hydra
- Bobbi asking Jemma about Fitz
- Skye hugging Coulson before they leave for the mission
- May sounding offended that Kara still has her face
Favorite quote(s):
Jemma: *knocks on the table* “That’s not wood, is it.”
Coulson: “Actually, that doesn’t have anything to do with the [Bermuda] Triangle. We solved that in the 80s.”
Billy Koenig (to Sam Koenig): “You can’t even do a sit-up!”
Bobbi: “Don’t die out there, okay?” / Hunter: “It’s Canada.”
Coulson: “I hate that phrase [acceptable collateral damage]. My number is zero.”
Raina: “Did you know [your dad] delivered you?” / Skye: “That’s sweet. He also killed a bunch of people.”
Other noteworthy stuff:
Does Mack want to work on Lola because he thinks there could be secret tech on her? Or is he legitimately interested in the old car?
That invisible umbrella Sam Koenig used to hide himself and Raina from Hydra has to have been inspired by Sam and Frodo’s elven cloaks, right?
Look at all that pretty natural lighting in San Juan!
Mack falling down the hole and turning all scary seemed like it was going to be a bigger deal than it actually was. Also you know Bobbi was thinking about Coulson’s statement that he had zero acceptable collateral damage when he told them to seal the tunnel despite Possessed!Mack falling down there.
I’ve always wanted to read fic about Raina before we meet her in AoS--her tie before and after she met Cal--but alas, I’ve never found any and I don’t think I could write it :/

Hi, (punisher spoilers in case some members or followers don't want to read further) could you make a gifset parallel between Daisy taking the gun from Ian Quinn and not being able to shoot in aos 1x03, with Amy taking the gun from henchman number 3 and shooting him in punisher 2x09 (around 44:30 into the episode)? thanks!!
Here you go :) https://marveltvladies.tumblr.com/post/182138148203/requested-by-detectiveoreilly

I just realized that the music box from the dream sequence in 2X09 is playing "Daisy." Like.
Thing #1: FORSHADOWING.
Thing #2: someone on the aos production team really loves 2001: A Space Odyssey. And I really want to high five that person.
