Ritsu’s Goal

If recent happenings from Onodera Ritsu no Baai No. 32 and No. 33 are to mean anything, it seems Ritsu’s goal is coming into view more now than it ever has before.

In Onodera Ritsu no Baai No. 32, we are introduced to Fujishiro Aoi, an aspiring mangaka that Takano met at a college lecture focused on manga creation after being sent as a representative for Marukawa. He found her work to be interesting and thought that she would be a good fit for their magazine. But Takano already has enough work on his plate as the head of the department, so he doesn’t really have the time to take on another author, especially an author that hasn’t been published before. That responsibility ends up going to Ritsu, as Takano believes that they’d be a good fit for each other.

Up to this point, Ritsu had taken on managing the works of four authors: Mutou, Satou, Kaitou, and Saitou. As far as we have been told, all of these authors had prior experience in the industry, two chapters (No. 2 [Mutou] and No. 11 [Kaitou]) being partially dedicated to showing us the transfer of management to Ritsu. Ritsu makes specific mention that this is the first time he’s taking on an artist that hasn’t made their debut yet.

This is an artist who has garnered the attention of Takano, and as readers we are led to want to trust his standards for anything that will be featured in Emerald. Ritsu also found the work to be interesting, and they have both gone on in No. 33 to compare her work to the early works of Usami Akihiko that were featured in the literature magazine Shosetsu Koharu as far back as their high school days about a decade ago. For those familiar with Junjou Romantica, Nakamura’s other best-selling series, you can see how big of a compliment that is to her as an author who has yet to even debut. For the unfamiliar, or for those who may need a bit of refreshing let me elaborate.

Usami Akihiko is the winner of a multitude of literature awards, and in the universe of these two stories, we are made to believe that his work is known nation-wide in this fictional Japan, if not known even further beyond. While he certainly came from a rich family, the amount of money that he makes through all the writing that he does is also nothing to sneeze at. Both Takano and Ritsu, always having spent a lot of time around books, are very familiar with his work. Ritsu even edited for Akihiko for awhile while working at Onodera Publishing. To compare anybody’s work to his should be taken as a major compliment.

Knowing all this, I believe that it is not a huge leap in logic to believe that once Aoi debuts, she is capable of eventually becoming one of Emerald’s top authors. It would be rewarding to be able to see both Ritsu and Aoi become more sure of themselves in their career paths and move forward- Ritsu’s established goal coming to fruition and Aoi standing alongside Ichinose Erika, the one who inspired her to create manga in the first place.

What is most important though is that this is a debuting author. Ritsu will be managing her from the very start of her manga making career, and there is no saying that he was handed this by anyone. It is up to Ritsu to cultivate the works that Aoi creates under the wing of the Emerald department, and if those works succeed, both Ritsu and Aoi succeed.
