Danganronpa Characters Watching a Move (at the cinema)

Talking the Whole Time (mostly gets popcorn thrown at them):

Angie - I don't know why, but I think she would.

Ibuki - Extremely loud and constantly gets "shushed"

Hifumi - Rambles about the actors and their voice overs in different anime.

Sayaka - Accidentally unaware, always notices easter eggs

Kiyotaka - Unaware socially and doesn't realise it's wrong

Tenko - Screams at the screen whenever a male comes on, gets shushed constantly and is escorted out to the lobby to wait for the movie to finish.

Monokid - He's just really loud.

Watching the Movie in Peace:

Imposter/Twogami - He's chill about the movie, eats his food quickly and constantly gets up to get more.

Chiaki - Relaxing, fell asleep after the first song/instrumental

Kirumi - Picking up rubbish/popcorn from the floor to help the workers. Stays late to assist with cleanup.

Korekiyo - Occasionally comments, but enjoys the movie nevertheless.

Kyoko - Still and silent, making sligh "huh" "ohhh" noises when she realises plot twists are coming up.

Monodam - Tells everybody to get along, sits with Monomi/Usami and tells the people around him to shush.

Shuichi - Done with everybodies shit by the end, but tolerates it for the other viewers sakes'.

Rantaro - He got no development, I didn't know where to put him.

Ryoma - Sits at the front because he can't see over the seats, quiet and isn't bothered by the others.

Spoils it on Accident:

Keebo - "I read an online forum" and then spoils the majority of the movie.

Mahiru - Searched all the actors on IMDB, watched trailers, found many full movie essay reviews on the movie before buying tickets, went on rotten tomatos for reviews. She wanted to get her moneys worth!

Makoto - Already seen it before because it was trending a week prior, accidentally spoils it but the people next to him don't mind.

Tsumugi - Got spoilers by Mahiru, was already in the fandom, came in cosplay and spoiled a bunch of it while rambling.

Gonta - "Gonta heard (spoils entire plot, then starts talking about the bee movie)"

Monophanie - "Hm I watched a movie like this... (<- It was the movie they were watching and she spoiled it all.)

Hajime - "Oh no... I'm a failure!" "Yes Hajime, a reserve course student hanging out with the Ultimates... you should be a stepping stone!" (<- He then gets mad at Nagito and spoils it to him purposefully, others hear though.)

(Actors AU: Part 1. Part 2)

The villain becomes the main character on season 2, taking care of the injured hero by threatening doctors to help and hiding both him and the maiden from the villainess in his house. Aoi does her best act as the maiden in this part of the story, scared of the villain when he is agitated and wary when he is kind to her, even getting an emotional scene when she sees the unconcious hero.

The villain rise in popularity , and even if the maiden is still the less popular character of the main four, she also gets more love. A lot of hero content regardless of ship, or lack of, turned into recovery hurt comfort, or tragedies where he never wakes up. The villainess takes a backseat in the story, any bad deeds she does kept as background detail, but she is still the ‘bad bitch everyone loves.‘ in the fandom, her lack of screentime just making the fans more eager for more.

At this point, there were as many love letters as there were critiques of the show. Teru avoids reading any hate, liking to check out the creations for the show, be it art and crafts, edits, aesthetics based on characters, theories, and so on. Aoi also likes them, smiling when Teru shares fun shitposts of their characters or people with fun cosplays, but when she feels down she spends most nights wide awake, unable to look away from any hate her characters get, they are far crueler about the cute maiden character, which is the character Aoi relates more between the two, and is a path that eventually leads to finding posts on Aoi, criticizing her acting to her appearance and behavior.

Aoi can’t say she is hurt, not exactly, she looks down on the strangers that hate the superficial image they have of her, just like she ignores any people claiming to have a crush on her, but she feels angry when people hate on the coworker she is fond of, unable to kill her possessive nature when she sees people claiming to have a crush on the villain, or worst, on her childhood friend, gushing about the actor instead of the character. So sometimes Aoi gets days she is tense from too much social media exposure before filming, but she is used to acting, and no one notices her unhealthy habit.

She has mixed feelings when she hears that Akane and Teru might have a romance in the show: On one hand, she is a professional who knows how acting works and she trusts Teru but on the other hand… She understands perfectly why Akane was so panicked when she had to kiss Teru, the ugly feeling hard to kill. 

Teru reassured her the script is all implied, and their romance will likely be one-sided, which was so embarrassing it made Aoi double down on acting like she isn’t bothered at all, if asked she’ll even claim this is a “Great idea! I can’t wait to see it <3”. 

Teru is a fantastic actor, the most experienced of the main cast, so when they start to set up for the hero to fall in love with the villain, the intention may still be unclear, but it gets attention right away.

They finally air a scene where the hero wakes up, and the villain is happy but mostly tired, immediately complaining. The scene has a stressed edge to it, but it still feels playful, the familiar energy of their banter breaking when the villain mentions the cute maiden, whose name immediately muffles the villain’s voice, turning any updates of what happened while the hero was asleep unintelligible. The villain’s voice transitions into car noises and we get a flashback in the hero's pov of the maiden shy smile becoming the villainess's cold and condescending one. The hero touches his bandages torso and stares blankly at the villain for a moment, the background sound became sharp again when the villain ask if he is hurting and if he needs to steal more painkillers, which makes the hero laugh in a very tired and bitter manner, clenching the sheets and sounding exasperated but noticeably softer than usual as he claims to be okay, there is no need to commit crimes in his behalf.

Some people thought this scene was a sign the maiden and the hero will finally get more focus/conflict, others that the villain and hero team up have been solidified, but most fans were celebrating that the hero is finally up again! His ‘strange attitude’ feeding everyone that have been craving angst and trauma. Only the die hard hero x villain shippers saw that scene as romantic. Regardless, it was a well-received episode, and Teru rose back to the top of popularity within the week.

They film a scene where the hero protects the villain from an ambush in the next episode, Akane is genuinely caught off guard when teru holds him close to protect him from falling debris, instead of pushing the villain away from dangers. Teru acts smug, claiming some improvisation outside their banters can be good for the show. The crew seem to agree because they actually aired it! Akane hates it, he looks stupid in his shock, actually holding on to Teru’s shoulders and being very genuine in his scandal when he asks Teru what the fuck he is doing, but it still aired. Akane want to punch the one behind putting the final product together. And Teru too. Mostly Teru.

 Akane vents to Aoi about the bastard being too good at acting on their next hangout, and how it makes his gloating after every shot a million times more annoying than usual. Aoi is amused by his theatrics, but she silently agrees, having almost fallen for the illusion that Teru loves her a few times, is what makes his playful yet careful behavior with her after each ‘date with the maiden’ shoot so comforting, is why watching his scenes slowly be more intimate with Akane makes her want to die. The fans excitment for it doesn’t help.

The crew says the two have chemistry so they will get together later. Akane is appalled and reminds them about his character's crush on the cute maiden ”The villain has been spending a lot of time with her recently, even if it’s one-sided, his crush should be going strong!” The crew see his point, and promise to give Akane a mini-arc where he realizes he only brings the maiden distress, and she is visibly happier when he isn’t around, so he’ll move on, for her. Akane is in shambles because he can’t argue it fits his character, and Teru teases him about it, only sounding genuinely apologetic when he apologise to Aoi, though he buys them both an ice cream.

They still want to explore the hero and the maiden relationship, since they were big friends and the maiden is very worried about him. They have another of theirs ‘fluffy scenes’ in a more isolated, but no less beautiful, place and is all sweet like always, a fluff band aid to the angst that have been this season, except cracks start showing: the maiden is not framed in warm light like usual, the hero acts awkward when the maiden touches him, and when she complements him to make him chin up, saying things that the villainess had said before, the hero grow tense and avoids eye contact, his goodbye feels more like he is running away than anything. He met up the villain, who have a warm framing despite how resigned and tired his smile is when he ask how his ‘date’ with the maiden was, the hero blush and look away and go to his room without saying a word, much to the villain confusion.

The fan base exploded at the implications. The show actually hit trending for a full twenty minutes.

The Implications of Cospox

I know literally no one cares, but this idea has been bouncing around inside my head for a while now and I just need to get it out there.

[Spoilers for the entire Danganronpa series ahead. Stop reading, Moji, I swear to God.]

Okay, so.

The big twist of Danganronpa V3 is that all previous installments of the Danganronpa franchise are works of fiction in-universe. V3 is actually the 53rd season of the ongoing Danganronpa TV series which rather confusingly started out as a bunch of video games and animated shows before transitioning into a live-action format where real people really kill each other for real.

Shirogane Tsumugi, who is part of the production staff, proves this to the survivors during the final class trial by cosplaying as a bunch of characters from the first two games, most prominently Enoshima Junko, the franchise’s main villain. Because she has a condition called cospox that doesn’t allow her to cosplay as real people without breaking out in a rash, this supposedly demonstrates that the characters from previous Danganronpas are truly fictional.

Now.

It’d be easy to assume that Tsumugi is just lying about cospox to mess with the others and plunge them into Despair™︎. Considering all the other stuff that doesn’t quite add up – which is most of the stuff – it would in fact be very weird if she wasn’t lying.

So let’s get weird.

I propose that the only part of Tsumugi’s testimony that is 100% accurate and trustworthy is the existence of cospox. By extension, I also propose that all the Danganronpas before V3 are not just fiction, but rather distorted retellings of actual events.

The first clue that this is the case is the people Tsumugi cosplays as. She only cosplays as characters from Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair, allegedly because those are the only ones Shūichi and the gang would be familiar with from the Flashback Lights. But why would Team Danganronpa have decided to only reveal the events of those two games to the participants of V3? If their goal was to prove that all of Danganronpa is fake, wouldn’t it have made more sense to have Tsumugi cosplay as everyone?

Simple. They couldn’t have Tsumugi cosplay as other characters because all those other characters – those introduced in Danganronpa 3, Ultra Despair Girls, and any of the light novels – were actually real people.

So only the following Danganronpa characters are for a fact known to be fictional: Akane, Aoi, Byakuya, Celeste, Chiaki, Chihiro, Fuyuhiko, Gundham, Hajime, Hifumi, Hiyoko, Ibuki, Izuru, Jill, Junko, Kazuichi, Kiyotaka, Kyōko, Leon, Mahiru, Makoto, Mikan, Mondo, Nagito, Nekomaru, Peko, Sakura, Sayaka, Sonia, Teruteru, Tōko, Ultimate Imposter, and Yasuhiro.

You know who this conspicuously doesn’t include, despite visibly being part of Tsumugi’s magical costume vortex? Ikusaba Mukuro, the other half of the original Ultimate Despair.

Why would Tsumugi choose not to cosplay as Mukuro in her Junko disguise even though she already has the appropriate clothes at the ready? Is it simply because Spike Chunsoft has never cared about Mukuro and consistently fucks her over at every opportunity?

Yes, but also no.

It’s because Mukuro was also real.

What does this all mean? Well, we’ve got an Ultimate Despair who is willing to orchestrate a killing game. And Matsuda Yasuke, the Ultimate Neurologist, still exists so erasing the contestants’ memories in preparation would be no problem. Mitarai Ryōta, the Ultimate Animator, also exists so that stupid mind control plot point from Danganronpa 3 is possible to execute as well.

In short: The biggest, most awful, most tragic event in human history actually happened in the V3 continuity, but Mukuro was the sole puppetmaster behind it instead of Junko.

Without the Ultimate Imposter’s positive influence, it probably would have been even easier for her to manipulate Ryōta and use his anime powers to recruit a bunch of random Hope’s Peak students as her underlings. With the exception of Hajime, the reserve course still exists so any one of the students there could have been picked to be the final candidate for the Hope Cultivation Plan in his stead – I’m placing my bets on Kuzuryū Natsumi becoming Kamukura Izuru considering she hated being confined to the reserve course even more than Hajime did – whom Mukuro then made out to be the culprit behind the student council’s mass murder, thus sparking the other reserve course students’ protests. And naturally, Monaca would have been easily available to mass manufacture killer Monokuma robots just like in the prime timeline.

The participants of the Killing School Life at Hope’s Peak Academy were whoever ended up as Mukuro’s pitiable classmates instead of our familiar class #78. While there is no Fujisaki Chihiro to develop Alter Ego, Gekkōgahara Miaya, the Ultimate Therapist, should be enough to still get a Neo World Program rolling. After all, in Danganronpa 2 it is said that programmers were among those who used their talents to spread Despair™︎ during The Tragedy even though the Remnants of Despair didn’t include anyone with programming skills (except maybe Kazuichi?), so someone at Hope’s Peak must have been up for the task regardless. Hell, let’s just say Mukuro told Monaca to develop a strong AI. She’s clearly smart enough.

Without Tōko and Genocide Jill to rely on and no Nagito to mess with the Demon Hunting game from behind the scenes, Komaru probably would have had a much harder time liberating Tōwa City. Maybe she teamed up with Yūta or Kanon or Takemichi or something. I don’t know. Why were all these people imprisoned in Tōwa City despite the reason for their imprisonment – their relationships to the Killing School Life contestants – not existing anymore? I also don’t know. I’ll figure that out another time.

By now you’re perhaps wondering: If all of this makes perfect sense and is definitely canon, why did Tsumugi bother to make up all that other shit? Simply put, because Tsumugi is Tsumugi.

She is absolutely obsessed with The Tragedy, that historic event she missed out on by virtue of being born too late. So she did what every teenager would do in this situation: Write fanfiction.

Junko is Tsumugi’s sparkly, edgy OC created to take the real Mukuro’s spot in her personal retelling of the events surrounding The Tragedy.

Think about it: She’s the secret twin sister of the woman who caused the apocalypse. She is prettier, smarter, bustier and more popular than Mukuro and has such an over-the-top, quirky personality that even the most unhinged individuals around her seem modest and composed in comparison. She is obviously the result of that special kind of flaming hot writing enthusiasm only found in teenage girls who spend way too much time watching anime. That’s why Mukuro ends up dying so early in Tsumugi’s version of the story, usurped by her very special original character who is so much better and cooler than the real deal in every way. That’s why Mukuro is so damn horny for Junko in Danganronpa 3.

Speaking of incest, we know that Tsumugi is into it in a major way. So why do you think she came up with Makoto, the big brother of the real-life hero of Tōwa City, and then had her other OC Tōko insist that they’re secretly in love with each other for the entirety of Ultra Despair Girls? Why did she invent Kanon’s cousin Leon just to claim she had a huge crush on him? Frankly it makes too much sense.

Tsumugi took those unprecedented real events that shook the world to its core and used them as the setting for her creative writing endeavors, replacing everyone involved she didn’t particularly care about, deemed too uninteresting or just inexplicably hated with wacky fictional characters like Sakura, Gundham or Genocide Jill.

The daughter of a yakuza boss who is also an artificially enhanced superhuman possessing every ability ever defeated Alter Ego Mukuro with the power of friendship inside a computer simulation? Nah, that’s nice and all but I don’t really like her vibe. What if instead that superhuman was a hot guy with an ahoge whom the Ultimate Gamer with big boobies immediately falls for and also his second identity had really long hair and red, glowing eyes? Let’s just turn that Natsumi chick into a side character who gets killed off-screen by someone whose first name isn’t even recorded because honestly, who gives a shit about her? I’m gonna write her a brother with a cool eyepatch though; that yakuza theme might not be a complete waste and also he can call her “Ultimate Little Sister”.

Is it any wonder then that a person like Tsumugi would eventually end up orchestrating her own killing game where she has full authorial control over every participant’s personality and behaviour from the get-go? This is exactly what she had always yearned for – a Danganronpa that reality cannot interfere with.

Kyoko Kirigiri. Costume: Sherlock Holmes. (is it stereotypical? Yes. Is it practical if there is a case needed for her? Also yes.) Monster Girl: Reaper (her whole 'hearing Death' thing she kinda has? At least, I seem to remember her having?)

Sayaka Maizono. Costume - Psychic (had to given her whole esper thing~). Monster Girl: Siren (think the harpy-bird one, instead of the modern mermaid)

Aoi Asahina. Costume: A shark girl (a shark girl with fake teeth and gills drawn at the sides. of her neck) . Monster: Mermaid (if I said anything else I'd be lying to myself).

Sakura Ogami. A princess (Hina rec that she'd look good in it, though she was a bit shy until the end to put it on). Monster: Ogress (it's in her nickname after all~)

Toko Fukawa/Genocide Jack. A box (Byakuya said it as an insult, but she took it to heart) and Freddy Krueger respectively (Jill's choice) Monster: Kuchisake-Onna (her whole 'am I pretty' deal reminded me of Toko's inferiority complex and the fact one of her items that she uses to kill are a pair of scissors, it just seemed to fit

Celestia Ludenberg. Costume/Monster - Vampire Queen (look at her, she's practically living that image right then and there. She even wants vampire butlers. It writes itself~)

Mukuro Ikusaba. Costume: A cheap werewolf cosplay with the eras and tail...that's it (Junko put her on a strict budget). Monster Girl: Werewolf/Hellhound (Moonlights as the former while on Earth, and acts as a vicious Hellhound in the underworld)

Junko Enoshima. Costume: Sexy angel/Goddess (made from the finest clothing she could get). Monster Girl: Devil (I imagine her wings and white robes have been singed black due to her innumerable sins. Shows off her figure more and red skin. Very good at masking her true form and just skirting the line so Hell isn't guaranteed for her for long)

Chiaki Nanami. Costume: Erika from Pokemon (relates to her sleepiness on a spiritual level). Monster: Ms. Sandman (Giving everyone some good rest~)

Akane Owari. Costume: 'Superhero' (its really just her tying her shirt around her neck as a cape, too poor to afford a proper costume). Monster: Orc (Goes with Sakura being an Ogre and super fitting I feel)

Sonia Nevermind:. Jason Vorhees (her love of serial killers hadh er waiting for this moment) Monster: Fairy Queen (I think it help gives across her regal, enchanting nature...and the looming possibility of her being surprisingly spooky if you look between her layers)

Peko Pekoyama. Costume: Sailor Moon(Lost a bet to Tsumugi). Monster: Guardian Angel (Ironic given she's the guardian to a yakuza, but its fitting)

Mahiru Koizumi. Wendy's Mascot (Also lost a bet to Tsumugi) Monster: Gorgon (Turning people to stone in time is the same taking pictures, right?~)

Ibuki Mioda. Costume: Corpse (the type to lie down on the floor to pretend to be dead) Monster: Banshee (holds cries that shake the heavens and your eardrums)

Hiyoko Saionji. Costume: Demon (be it adorable or sexy if she's in her taller form - it gets her candy). Monster: Pixie (Thought it'd fit better than gremlin after some time passed. Also known for being jerks and dancing so extra points there)

Mikan Tsumiki. Costume/Monster: Mummy (One's a cheap costume that can't cover her thiccness and the other...also can't cover her thickness)

Kaede: Costume: Phantom of the Opera (something I think just works out nicely for her) Monster: Phantom (a benevolent kind that loves playing pranks by haunting the piano she used to play. Or a certain emo. Whichever comes first)

Maki. Costume: Little Red Riding Hood (was running out of time and though to repurpose an old cloak of hers). Monster: Bloody Mary/Maki (call her name three times in that mirror, she doesn't fail to make an impression~)

Kirumi. Costume: Undead Bride (another victim of Tsumugi's bets). Monster: Jorogumo (alternates between shapeshifting into forms of a human with minor spider traits to a half woman half spider. Fits well given her whole spider motif on her dress)

Tsumugi. Costume: Isabella from the Promised Neverland (shady host MILF that pretends to be benevolent and is operating a 'show' go brr). Monster: Kitsune (Shapeshifting fox spirit works pretty for her)

Komaru. Costume: Cheap Ghost outfit (unoriginal, but she has a low budget). Monster: Zombie (cue Toko making jokes about her being brainless to the end of time)

Chisa. Costume: Fairy Godmother (Always down to make her girls night into the best ever) Monster: Wood Elf (wanted at least one Elf in the mix and Chisa was pretty much the best one that could fit)

Seiko. Costume: Victor Frankenstein (she really isn't used to dress up parties) Monster: Ghoul (inspired by her DR3 hulking out method)

Ruruka. Costume: Elaborate Macaron-themed outfit. Monster: Slime (a honey slime in this case~)

Miaya. Costume: Bunny Girl (...as in dressed in a rabbit onesie, not Miu bunny girl). Monster: Android (Based upon her robotic copy in DR3)

Kotone Naegi (what I've named Makoto and Komaru's Mom). Costume: Wonder Woman (even if its ill-fitting). Monster: Revenant (Fits with Komaru being a zombie girl)

Natsumi. Costume: Delinquent Girl (stereotypical, but she does admire the aesthetic). Monster: Frost Dragon (Mainly stays as a hybrid between girl and draconic traits.

Sato. Costume: Burger Queen (head about Mahiru being a Wendy's girl and wanted to help in the future teasing). Monster: Lamia (Immune to being petrified and is super close with her).

Ryoko. Costume: N/A (Schoolgirl? But that's her daily outfit. She just forgot it was Halloween). Monster: Fallen Angel (Would be a demon outright if her memory hadn't essentially made her forget she's supposed to be a villain)

Aiko Umesawa. Costume/Monster: Easter Bunny (three bunny girls making things awkward at the party, but at the very least she gets the bunny slot to herself as a monster).

Tsubasa Kami: Costume: Juliet (Fits her couple theme with Taro). Monster: Cupid (Responsible for putting people together~)

Karen Kisaragi: Office Secretary (only slightly different than being a regular one). Monster: Frog Girl (...admittedly more of a 'not quite sure why moment, but just think it fits')

Kotomi Ikuta. Costume: Ringmaster (she organized the party pretty much). Monster: Chimera (I think her being a mix and match monster like this one fits her fiery personality she showed off in the show)

Kiriko Nishizawa: Costume/Monster: Skeletal Girl (Can shift between being a full skeleton to being mostly human looking with some faint bony features, like a slightly sunken in face and hands. Still thicc as Hell in other places)

Suzuko Kashiki. Costume: Tennis Pro (she's probably a sporty girl so wouldn't put it pass her to use her uniform as a costume) Monster: Golem (rock solid in all the right places, and soft in the right areas too!)

Misaki Asano. Costume: Batgirl (don't tease too much for it~). Monster: Neko Girl (...also don't know it just fits her)
