thinking of the end of death note the musical and how the shinigami ryuk takes out an apple from light's shirt pocket and how the apples are actually human hearts and how by eating them the shinigami returns them to another realm for spirits
#this is very rambly but ryuk likes apples because they're human hearts#and its not in the sense of “this is horrendous” but more like#it's something that he has to do to return them#just like rem uses her hands to access misa's life force#anyways the japanese version is so good#death note the musical#kikirambles#musicals#also im really not sure if the shinigamis in japanese myths do that i wanna read more

So I finally found a way to watch tristamp in English dub (I only ever watched the series in Japanese). I haven’t done any deeper thoughts and analysis, and I’m only halfway through the series but here’s my impression so far:
- I love English dub Vash, especially his gibberish noises, such a chaotic dumbass (affectionate), and although some of his jokes and mannerism didn’t translate as well as I hoped, they did a very good job. They deserved two dozen donuts. (although if you hold me at gunpoint and ask me to choose English or Japanese Vash I will choose the Japanese version with a thin margin because I have personal bias towards Matsuoka Yoshitsugu [he’s from where I live lol, and I’m a big fan])
- I’m also in love with how they play Legato and Roberto, especially Legato, I was surprised by the lack of the feeling out of place (Is that the right word? sorry my brain suddenly stopped working in English) that you usually have when you hear a show dubbed in another language you’re not used to hearing. So smooth. And they nailed the drunkle speech with Roberto.
- I honestly was disappointed with the lack of accent in Wolfwood’s speech (maybe I just didn’t hear it correctly? Idk) because he speaks in heavy Kansai dialect in Japanese, even when he was a child (also casting Hosoya Yoshimasa really emphasized the accent). A huge missed opportunity on the English dub, in my opinion. I was expecting Wolfwood with a heavy Southern accent or something. And on that note they also missed the chance to add some dialect for the worm hunters on episode 4.
- English dub Meryl feels mature and a lot more pulled together to me compared to the Japanese version, which sounds very pristine and innocent until she starts learning about the world. It makes her a little… out of place for me who’s used to Meryl speaking in a very polite formal Japanese to everyone (even when she’s yelling in rage or when she’s cursing people). I think it suits Meryl from ‘98 anime more than tristamp Meryl. Probably because you can’t really translate her distinct way of speaking accurately, it’s not anyone’s fault, just a matter of different language. But I guess I like the Japanese version better for Meryl. I just love the way she speaks, shame there’s no English equivalent to her speech style.
- I don’t like English dub Nai. I’m 100% going with the Japanese version in this. Not the performance, though, I know translations are really hard and I do think the English VA did a great job, but as someone who’s used to how Nai speak in Japanese, the dub just… didn’t feel right. In Japanese Nai speaks in a relatively rougher manner compared to Vash (in how he chooses his words, also the subtle but different way he talks to humans and to Vash) and it didn’t show as much in the English dub. And his pretentious speech that sounds like some people from the church near my house doesn’t get carried to the English dub, I guess. In English he just sounds like a scary villain to me, while in Japanese I can feel his emotions and (warped) love towards Vash just from his words. I saw someone pointing out that Nai refers to the dependent plants with feminine pronouns, and it’s even more prominent and emphasized in the Japanese version. They’re not wrong. Maybe in English it can come across as a bit misogynistic(?), I don’t know, but I like how he does this in Japanese, because to me it feels like he’s always trying to refer to them as “persons” and not “things”, although his treatment towards them is contradictory.
This ended up longer than I expected but overall I enjoyed the English dub and I love analyzing different languages. I wanna know how it feels for people who know absolutely zero Japanese watching the series in English dub and in Japanese with English subtitles. I know that there were differences in the subtitles and the dub but for me I can’t compare English sub and dub because I’d just go with my Japanese interpretation if I watch the subbed version (or I’d rather just ditch the subtitle altogether because sometimes it’s making my brain confused when I speak both languages).
Also to people who write Trigun fanfics in English, where do you base the character speech from? I don’t know how to translate Japanese dialects, so Wolfwood, for example, is very difficult for me to write in English.
#trigun#trigun stampede#my ramblings#I am not very good at articulating#and my thoughts are always branching everywhere#anyway I want to write a fanfic but I have no idea how to write the characters speech#I only know the Japanese version of all trigun media#and I don’t like reading comic/manga so I’m kinda reluctant to re-read the manga in English#I read Wolfwood’s lines in Hosoya-san’s voice even in English fanfics#unrelated note#I’ve been trying to convince my therapist to watch trigun lmao#she said she’s gonna watch it today

yesterday in vocal synth news
#art#traditional art#fountain pen ink#virvox project#mizusawa takuto#voicevox#ia#cevio#voisona#also miku is there technically kind of. shes down there#sorry im not a piapro or vocaloid user i was more focused on the other things LOL#looks neat tho! im very curious about the kaito and meiko remasters#i was always tempted and curious but im not a huge fan of the weakness of their v3s compared to their v1s#so i hope we get some demo videos or something soon. or if not i hope in a month people post lots of videos LOL#also intrigued by miku nt update and v6 ai. i have no interest personally in using miku but im sure it'll be interesting#gumi and galaco v6 sound pretty good in my humble onion so im very curious#but anyway. back to ME hjkfsjhjrfds im so excited for takutos voice#itll be cute seeing all the little skits the japanese fans make and for me specifically you KNOW im gonna get on that song shit#im gonna make.... the most bizarre boyband on earth. there is some manner of catboy. and a 50 year old man. it'll be great#maybe i'll remake the yume no tobira cover hee hee#and ia.... oh baby ia.... im so happy you have no idea man i have been WAITING FOR THIS. okay please dont kill me for this but like#highkey i dont really care for her original v3 LOL its not bad or anything i just find a lot of v3 fem vocals sound like the same person#and this was painful for me because like im a gigantic lia fan. i dont need it to be a 1 to 1 recreation or anything but like#i was always so bummed out how thin ia's voice sounded. it felt like a bit of a waste how much the v3 noise removed all lia's warmth#and like the depth of her tone. and like it sounds fine. she sounds like a slightly more operatic miku when people tune her high and breath#which is very common and that sounds fine. but like i still felt like auauuuuuuuuhhhhhhh nothing i loved about lia's voice is there#cevio 1.0 was a step up it brought back a LOT of warmth (although you had to really push up the alpha to get the depth)#and while i personally dont hate the cevio 1 noise its nice to have a version that no longer sounds underwater <3#she sounds so rich now.... i still bump up the alpha a bit because i like lia's deeper work a lot LOL but its wonderfullllllllll#so good so so so so good im obsessed. yesterday was truly an Event for vocal synth news

ok after listening to the english version of the death note musical....... unpopular opinion i think but i actually prefer the japanese version? dont get me wrong, with some of the songs i do think i might like the eng version more but..... idk i like the lyrics of the japanese version a lot more? and obviously i only know them via a translation but i know for a fact that the entire focus of certain songs are different between versions.
like in the english version of the game begins, L is talking about his strategy to track down kira. but in the japanese version, he's more so talking TO kira directly and saying that he's going to take him down from his "god" status to hell. or mortals and fools, which had a wholeee different vibe in the japanese version being called like a cruel dream. and uhhhh am i insane or was rem's song before she dies an entirely different song? cause in english it was like a sort of generic love song that was pretty chill considering the context, while in the japanese version it was this superrr melancholic and striking ballad she sang while floating around misa.
idk but i really do think i prefer the japanese version. but the og english version is good too!!! i really liked hurricane and the way it ends in particular
#in ''the way it ends'' btw light saying to L ''i've always stayed a step ahead; but you were with me all the way'' almost made me cry WHATTT#WHO MADE HIM FUCKING SAY THATTTTT THATS SUCH AN INSANE LYRIC#but anyway yeah i think i prefer the jp version a good amount#another thing was um. and this might be a stupid thing to be weird about but. L's actor was too passionate for my tastes#<- that sounds insane but if you know anime L you know what i mean right. like hes pretty reserved#and i felt in the japanese production i watched L's actor there was still a great performer and singer like putting work into those songs#while still keeping that air of L being more reserved and like. flat almost? i feel like the guy playing L in the eng version was too much#like ''im BELTTTINGGGGGG HOW IM GONNA FUCKING CATCCHHHH KIRA!!!!!!!!!!'' like bro calm down......#ITS A GOOD PERFORMANCE it just doesnt read as L to me. and like thats fine whatever its an adaptation#but also in the japanese version they still did that adaptation while making L feel more like himself. so idk man#but anyway I WANNA SEE THIS NEW LONDON PRODUCTION SOOOOOOOO BAD#IVE SEEN PHOTOS AND IT LOOKS SO GOOD THE SET IS SOOOOOO COOL LOOKING OML#i need to see this musical live at SOME point in my life. pleaseeee can we get a north america production after this#serena.txt#death note posting

i'm considering making cliji/warfield (or even ffxvi overall) gifs but with the actual translation of the japanese text (since japanese and english versions are VERY different in terms of meaning) but i'm afraid that would be a bit weird??
#aya.txt#ffxvi#cliji#warfield#don't get me wrong i dont know nothing about japanese#but in france we're lucky to have the translation of the japanese text so technically all i'll have to do is translating from french to eng#both versions are really really good and they're complimentary which is even better#anyway if i'm doing this i'm scared people will get bacl to me saying ''wait this wasn't in the game''#so i dont know... but i kinda want english people to know what the game is worth in japanese and maybe add a little more lore into it?

Wait the Eternal's localized names are old English???
I thought they were just made up, I'm so sorry
And also, yeah, I totally also read the e in Seofon until just now, apparently
LDJJFLKDJFLDFLMFDKFDML
YES. YES THEY ARE. i mean most of them are!
youtube
The justification was that since the Eternal's Japanese name came from all over the world it would be confusing for a non-Japanese player who could recognize the numbers (like Siete would be confusing for Italians who'd just see 7 around, Quatre would be confusing for French speakers who would just see 4 around, Six would be confusing for most Latin Language ect) so they went instead with a version that is no longer in use.... and focusing on English.
I personally am not fan of the change because i think the international aspect of the initial name was to show that the Eternals are watching all over the skies, all over the world basically, and limiting them to Old English just... well. is limiting.
But at least there was indeed some thoughts into it.
and yeah same. French and Japanese are both Syllabic languages so it's basically easier -ish for French ppl to read romanized Japanese because we do have like 90% of the same logic in prononciation and there's just a few sounds that are not similar, but at least the prononciation logic is consistant (*side eye at English*)-- and i was taught that you need to pronounce every syllabe the way they're written. So even when they are using foreign name i tend to use this logic and i always read it Sé-o-fo-n . But that's so wrong because English still is there to spite me.
But oh well the more we know!
#this reminds me of when i read hxh in english and the english translation localized Kaito's name as 'Kite'#because it's how you'd pronounce 'Kite' in English. but i was going with the Japanese logic.#so i kept reading it as 'K-ee-té' and got so heavily confused when i picked a french version of hxh#and read his name localized 'kaito' because it follows the convention of how we pronounce Japanese names#anyway good times#also one of my gift for this xmas had an Italian quote on the box and it had the word Siete on it#and i swear i had a moment of not computing because 'what the fuck is he doing here'#i'm sure it's what gbf wanted to avoid. But i wish they let him haunt me properly.#ichareply#ichafantalks gbf#anonymous

Previous polls:
Dragon Quest I
#dragon quest#dq2#answer the first poll quickly bc i forgor to change the duration to a week#subtitles are omitted bc the answers have character limits but yeah dragon warrior titles didn't have subtitles but japanese versions do#but the sfc and gbc versions are 2 games in 1 so they don't have the subtitles in any region#DON'T ask why the ampersand won't format properly blame tumplr i can't edit this#the wii version is in other bc it's a bundle of both the famicom and super famicom versions of dq1 2 and 3#international fans would be better off just emulating the games directly but#some people may still vote bc of the animated intro (very cool if you haven't seen it)#ps4 3ds and switch version i think are essentially the same but like idk if you have a hacked region-free 3ds or a japanese one maybe the#convenience or portability is good? maybe you hate nintendo and have a way to play the ps4 version?#anyway see you tomorrow for dq3 i prommy these polls gets more interesting past dq3

Okay I think I actually love the Brazilian dub of toh (<- I do not speak Portuguese)
#ramblings of a lunatic#the owl house#i can't comment on how well things are translated BUT i do know that i love the voice acting for it#the only one I'd say is so-so so far is hunter (I'm just attached to Zeno. tho i do love his latin american VA patricio lago!)#but also i haven't heard much of him yet#BUT WILLOW LUZ AND GUS ARE ALL ON POINT??? not in terms of voice matching but in terms of character energy#lowkey appreciated them not going for as much of a generic high pitched mean girl voice for boscha#as much as i like eden reigel in the og version this version feels like a girl who is good at sports and bullies you abt it#haven't seen Darius' tho (I'm watch asias and switched dubs part way through)#watching in different dubs is fun though!!! it's not as fun as the spanish dub where I can actually catch every other word or two#but it's also more fun bc it makes the episode feel fresher for me. which is nice since I've seen this show like. 4 times lol#anyway! ya learn something new everyday#i think i might watch king's tide in the Japanese dub someday tho bc belos va reminds me of the fuckin. badguy in pretty cure#and that's so funny to me. that's so funny

kinda weird to me how basically every other language gave all of megamix's sequels unique names and then the english version just didn't bother for 90% of them-
#puppy rambles#rhythm hell#megamix#hole in one 2's japanese name in megamix is hole in one lady and that's funny to me#also ''every'' is probably a slight exaggeration. i'm gonna check real quick actually-#the german and italian versions don't have unique names for snappy trio. or fan club 2. or figure fighter 3- okay i think i see a trend her#jungle gymnast does get a unique name tho#the french version gave tap trial 2 a unique name why didn't we get that. IT IS TURBO TAP TRIAL FUCK YOU MEGAMIX#jumpin' jazz doesn't have a unique name in french though it is still different from in ds#only the japanese french and korean versions renamed hole in one 2. in french it's women's golf apparently-#super samurai slice 2 uses roman numerals in japanese so that's neat#cosmic dance gets unique names in every language good for it#as does cosmic rhythm rally therefore ofc#rhythm rally seems to be one of the few instances of the korean version not basing its names off the japanese names#its korean name is still rhythm rally interestingly enough. anyways#working dough 2 doesn't have a unique name in most languages. aside from japanese french and korean#and karate man senior isn't a sequel technically-#thanks for coming to my tedtalk /hj
