you don’t like doctor’s offices. especially not now. you don’t like the hypnotic hum of the fluorescent lights, the cabinets that’ve been there since the late 80’s, the pamphlets sitting in an acrylic holder telling you that you have options.
options. not anymore. because you’re sitting on the examination table about 16 weeks pregnant, waiting for the doctor.
“the baby looks healthy,” the doctor tells you, barging into the room without a knock. “i’m prescribing zofran for the nausea. the nurse will see you out.”
thank fucking god. you wanted nothing more than to get the fuck out of this place. the best part about these visits was the walk home. they are usually quite pleasant. being pregnant in the summertime has its downfalls, but feeling the breeze in your hair and through your thin dress is your saving grace.
it’s just another bonus that you pass your favorite ice cream shop on the way home. you think you’ll have an affogato today, decaf, of course.
it smells like heaven in the shop, that cool, sweet smell from the coolers. your favorite. this is your saving grace, this affogato will solidify the day as a good one, despite the lingering feeling of doctor on you.
ice cream in hand, it’s finally time to go home. the walk is clearing your head already. you eat a spoonful of vanilla and sigh. maybe you ought to stop by the pharmacy for those meds. on second thought, that can be tomorrow’s task. you’ll be alright.
actually, maybe not. because you see simon riley’s stupid, bulking form walking towards you about a block away. fuck. shit fuck. you should hide. duck into the closest shop before he can come after you. but it’s no hope, you’re looking up and you’ve already made direct eye contact. nausea meds sound so good right now.
may as well keep going forward. it’s not like he’ll notice, anyway. you’re barely showing, but your white dress isn’t doing you any favors right now.
you’ll give a polite smile, duck your head, and all will be well. no stopping, no small talk, no—
simon is physically cornering you to a complete halt in the middle of the sidewalk, and there is nothing you can do about it. maybe if you curl your back in a little bit, the bump won’t be as noticeable.
“what are you doing? stop that.”
he is so gracefully referring to your posture.
“i don’t have time for this simon. i’ve got things to do.”
you walk sideways around him, and he follows.
“where are you coming from?”
you can’t help it. “you lost the right to ask that question when you fell off the face of the planet.”
you hear him grunt behind you and smile. great, no snide comments yet.
“you look different.”
shit. he’s jogging, catching up to you and walking by your side now. the breeze is picking up and you shift uncomfortably. the fabric of your dress is clinging to your stomach.
simon looks down, his intent is to see what you’re eating, but he catches a glimpse of your swollen stomach and freezes. he’s nearly swallowed by all the foot traffic.
“simon?” you feel the loss of him by your side. he’s stood still, strangers bumping into him and jostling his shoulders.
great. now you’re backtracking, when really all you want is to be at home, in bed.
“simon, what’s your problem?”
“you’re pregnant.”
time stops for him. he’s the father, no way he couldn’t be. unless you were cheating on him, which he highly doubts considering your heart is the purest thing he’s ever encountered during his time on this earth.
you let out a long, long sigh. “yeah.”
then you’re swaying, trying to keep upright and simultaneously swallowing down vomit. simon watches as the life drains from your face a bit. his hands are gripping your shoulders to stabilize you. his touch feels nice, warm.
“i need to get home,” you tell him with a sad smile, pained to be leaving his soft touch behind yet again.
“i’ll walk you.”
you nod. you don’t have the heart to ask him to take his hand off your waist, feels too good. and he’s keeping the world right side up.
it’s only a short distance home, and soon he’s ushering you up the stairs to your flat. you don’t stop him from doing that, either.
you also don’t stop him from pulling your favorite blanket over you after helping you lie down on the couch.
you don’t even get the chance to tell him to leave because you’re just so tired, and his presence makes you feel so safe. you’re falling asleep and quickly. he lets you.
he sits and watches you sleep for the better part of an hour. when you stir, he’s there, staring.
he’s in your lounge chair, chin resting on his folded knuckles.
“i’m sorry you didn’t feel like you could tell me.”
you’re barely awake and what’s he saying? “huh?” you say stupidly, wiping your eyes of sleep.
“i said,” he swallows, “i’m sorry you didn’t feel like you could tell me.”
you’re sitting straight up now, definitely more awake now. “i couldn’t have told you. even if i wanted to. you disappeared, simon.
he did. but he doesn’t have the time to explain that now. so, he ignores you.
“how far along are you?”
you tell him. he stands from the chair, sitting down right next to you. he asks if he can feel your stomach. you guess so.
things are getting a little too serious for you now.
“right, well. i had a lovely nap, and i’m feeling much better. thank you for walking me home, but i need to stop by the pharmacy and—”
he interrupts you, tugging your wrist when you try to stand. “i’ll go for you. i’ll do it, please. i’ll do anything you ask me to.
you frown down at him. “simon, there’s no point to this. please just go. it’s just… too late.”
simon’s heart is breaking. he didn’t think it could break anymore than it already has in the last few months.
“let me stay.”
he begs. you think there are tears in his eyes, and if you let them fall you know there’ll be no going back. so you sit with him, you let him kiss you with his hand on your stomach. you let him lay you down on the beat up couch he was always pestering you to replace. you let him pull your dress over your head and kiss his way down your stomach. you let him sink into you slowly and pull your calves up to rest on his shoulders. you let him cum inside of you, again.
you even let him go to the pharmacy for you.

PoV (Y/N):
Today was a very relaxed day in Alexandria. The walkers were unusually quiet, no vendors from the other communities and no events. It was a very quiet day, something we don't get very often these days. And because of this quiet day, my friend, Daryl, and I also had the evening to ourselves. We decided to spend this evening together. Quality time. Carol even left us alone in the house so we could really rest. We didn't want to do much, something relaxing. So we decided to have a nice dinner and just cuddle a bit. Or maybe something else…
Dinner came to an end very quickly and we went straight to dessert. After less than a few seconds I was already completely naked in our bed. "Oh god, Daryl…~!" I lay in our shared bed, moaning loudly, with Daryl between my legs. A tingling sensation ran through my entire body as he sucked on my clit. Daryl's rough hands stroked my thighs gently and he held them still on his shoulders. Although he had made it clear to me many times that it didn't bother him if I "crushed" his head with my thighs, he wanted me to stay still. But how the hell was I supposed to lie still when the man of my dreams let me see heaven with only his tongue?
I ran my fingers through his long hair, sometimes gently pulling it or gently scratching his head. When I scratched his head, he always purred quietly. It would make me giggle if the vibration of his tongue wouldn't make me moan. Sometimes he would growl quietly and it would give me goosebumps. The longer his hair got, the more sensitive his scalp became. That's how it always seemed to me anyway. "Ya feel good?" He asked quietly. Did I feel good? Did he even have the right to ask me something like that while he slowly inserted one of his fingers into me and hit my magic spot directly? But I nodded quickly and whimpered loudly. "Yes…! God, you're making me feel so good, Daryl~…" I then answered him. Daryl loved it when I praised him. He liked that he made me feel good and I would tell him every day if I could.
While his finger kept grazing my magic spot, I arched my back and gently pulled on his hair. He slightly curled his finger while he gently nibbled on my clit. This made me twitch slightly and a pleasant shiver ran down my back. Moaning loudly, I stared up at the ceiling before slowly closing my eyes and surrendering to his touch. Every now and then he swapped his finger for his tongue. His finger massaged my clit in circular movements while his tongue sank into me. Every time he growled, a stronger shiver came over me and I moaned his name loudly. "Oh Daryl~! Fuck, I'm gonna cum!" I moaned loudly. A huge knot was building up in my abdomen and it threatened to burst at any second. Trembling, I looked down at Daryl, who gently kissed my clit before this time sinking two fingers into me and rubbing them provocatively against my magic spot. His tongue quickly licked my clit, sometimes nibbling gently.
"D-daryl~…!" "Cum for me~… come on, darlin'~…" He murmured softly against my pussy. Whining, I pressed his face closer to my pussy and I came around his fingers. My whole body was shaking, my breathing was fast and unrhythmic and my head was spinning. While I slowly relaxed, Daryl kissed my clit and my inner thighs, moving his fingers a little inside me so that I could slowly ride out my orgasm. When he then pulled his fingers out, he licked them clean as well, a loud growl escaping him as he tasted me. "Ya taste like heaven~…" His words made me blush heavily, if my face wasn't already bright red.
Daryl slowly kissed up my naked body and I felt his bulge rubbing against my thigh. While Daryl kissed my neck and gave me little love bites, I let my hand wander over his still-clothed body until I finally touched his pants. I carefully undid his belt and then pulled his pants down a little, his hard member immediately jumped against his abdomen. "Fuck, darlin'~…" Daryl trembled slightly as my fingertip rubbed against his tip. I could immediately feel his precum and I began to spread it on his shaft. Daryl moved his hips slightly against my hand, his breathing became faster and I felt that he was kissing me less and less. God, he must have really missed all of this.
"Lay down~…" I whispered quietly against his ear. Daryl grumbled briefly in agreement before he lay down on his back next to me. I started to kiss his neck, going deeper and deeper. When I felt his shirt, I looked up at him questioningly. Would it be okay if I took off his shirt? And Daryl nodded before sitting up slightly and slowly taking it off. He immediately lay down again, having thrown his shirt in some corner. "You're so beautiful…" I whispered quietly, which only made him scoff quietly. "'m no' beautiful…" His words made me look a little angry, and I gently bit his skin. He immediately gasped in shock before growling quietly at me. "Stop talking shit, Dixon… you're beautiful… everything on you is beautiful…" I whispered as I started to kiss his chest. I kissed every inch, every scar and his little tattoo above his left nipple. Daryl sighed and moaned softly at my kisses as I went deeper and deeper. I gently kissed his thighs before kissing up his shaft. I pulled his pants down to his knees so I could get better access to his cock. A soft moan immediately escaped the archer and I continued. I slowly licked his tip, his precum immediately spreading on my tongue.
Daryl put one of his hands on my head, which made me look up. He was leaning on his elbow and was looking deep into my eyes. His blue eyes were dark, full of passion, lust and hunger. I hummed quietly in amusement and spat on his shaft before spreading my saliva on his shaft. "Yar a tease, ya know tha´?" "I´m sorry, baby… I´ll do it right, now… lay down and enjoy~." I then purred quietly and took his cock in my mouth. I wrapped my fingers around the area that I couldn't get in my mouth. First I moved my head slowly, my fingers moved with my head and Daryl exhaled loudly. Slowly he closed his eyes and lay down again, relaxed and breathing heavily. I closed my eyes too and sucked greedily on his cock. "Fuck~… yar so good~…" My lover murmured softly, his fingers stroking my head. Humoring softly, I swirled my tongue around his tip and my fingers applied a little pressure to his base. I felt his cock pulsing and twitching in my mouth.
I hollowed my cheeks around his shaft as I moved my head faster on him. Daryl moaned a little louder now, pressing his head harder and deeper into the pillow. His breathing became more and more jerky, while he also growled quietly from time to time. His hand, which was stroking my head, moved my head slightly. He controlled my pace and my movements and I enjoyed it very much. "Such a good girl~…" His words made me tremble and I moved my head even faster around him. Loud moaning, slurping and swallowing noises could be heard, along with his quiet growling and his rapid breathing. "Fuck~…! Stop~…" And with these words he pulled me away from him. A thread of saliva still connected me to his cock, but it broke relatively quickly. My lips were a little swollen and looked a little thicker as I looked at him hungrily and passionately.
"Can' cum now~… have ta fuck ya first~…" He then growled quietly and in the next second I was lying under him again. My legs were spread wide and I felt his wet, hard member on my pussy and my inner thigh We kissed passionately, our hands touched each other's bodies and we rubbed our bodies together. A loud sigh escaped me as he rolled his hips against mine, his shaft rubbed between my folds. "'re we impatien' now?" He asked quietly against my lips. Another moan escaped my lips as he rubbed his tip against my clit. My hands wandered from his broad shoulders to his broad back and I moved my pelvis against him. "Yeah~… I want you, Daryl~…" I whispered quietly, almost desperately. But Daryl grinned slightly and nodded before sitting up a little.
I wrapped my legs loosely around his waist while Daryl positioned himself. He had one hand on my waist, the other holding his shaft before he looked at me. His blue eyes sparkled slightly, but they also looked at me questioningly, asking if I was ready for him and his cock. I immediately nodded at his look. We had had sex several times before, but that was back in prison. So quite a while ago. When Daryl saw that I was ready, he slowly pushed himself into me. He leaned over me, supporting his arm next to my head while his other hand still held my waist. His large and thick shaft stretched my inner walls completely and I moaned his name loudly. With my eyes closed and my mouth wide open, I laid my head back and pressed my fingernails into his back. “Fuck, yar tigh´~…” Daryl growled softly in my ear.
"Oh Daryl~…!" I felt him twitching violently inside me and how quickly his chest rose and fell. I immediately pressed his strong chest against my soft breasts so I could feel his heartbeat better. It was beating just as fast as my heartbeat and I wrapped my legs tighter around his waist. As soon as he was finally completely buried in my pussy, he kissed me briefly before resting both his arms next to my head. My hands wandered over his broad back as he slowly started to move. Daryl moved his hips slowly and passionately, burying his face in my shoulder. I moaned softly against his skin, my hands stroked his back gently and I closed my eyes.
The bed beneath us squeaked softly and the blanket rustled a little with our movements. Daryl started kissing my shoulder and moved a little faster. He moved his hips faster and every time our skin touched, we could hear it loud and clearly. Soft growls and gasps escaped my lover as his hands gripped the pillow tighter. Our hearts beat together at a fast pace. "God, ya feel so good~…" Daryl moaned softly against my skin. He gave me goosebumps and I moaned his name loudly. God, I just had to see his face! So I let one hand wander to his head and I gently tugged on his hair to show him to look at me. Luckily, Daryl understood too and leaned away a little so he could look at my face. While he looked deep into my eyes, he lifted my hips a little and he moved a little harder against me. "I love you~…!" I moaned loudly, my insides tightening around him even more. Daryl growled loudly before slamming his lips hard against mine and pulling me into a hot, passionate kiss.
Our tongues danced wildly with each other, exploring each other's mouths and sometimes I sucked on the tip of his tongue. The room was filled with smacking, whimpering, moaning and kissing noises, sometimes you could hear the bed squeaking. Our kiss became sloppier and sloppier, some saliva ran down my chin and I pulled his hair a little harder. This always made Daryl moan quietly. But when Daryl stopped his movements, I broke away from our hot kiss. I took a deep breath, my head was spinning and my lips felt more swollen. Daryl's lips were also slightly swollen and pink, just like his cheeks. "Daryl~…? Why did you stop?" I asked, out of breath. For a moment I thought that something was wrong, that he wanted to stop, but when he pushed me down with one hand on my shoulder and suddenly started moving again, I gasped in shock.
Daryl kept changing his pace, one second he would move slowly and the next second he would move very quickly. These variations made my eyes roll back in my head and I clung to his strong arms. Even though I wasn't looking at Daryl, I could feel him staring at my breasts, which were bouncing with his movements. A loud growl escaped his lips before he leaned down and took my right nipple into his mouth. "God, yar so beautiful~…" He moaned softly against my skin while his tongue moved fast around my nipple. This caused me to arch my back, pushing my breasts closer to his face. "Fuck, Daryl~…!" I kept moaning out soft curse words or his name, as if those were the only words I knew at the time.
While Daryl moved more slowly and firmly again, I wrapped my legs tighter around his hips and moved my hips against his. It felt more intense for Daryl when I moved towards him. The archer immediately moaned a little louder and moved a little faster against me. His breathing got faster and faster, he gently nibbled on my right nipple before taking my left nipple into his mouth and sucking on it. In my pussy I felt his cock twitching and pulsing strongly inside me, Daryl was probably getting closer and closer to his orgasm. But it was no different for me. The knot was building up again in my abdomen and my breathing was getting faster and faster. "Fuck, Daryl~…! I'm gonna cum!" I moaned loudly. Daryl just growled quietly, my nipple was still in his mouth. Then he let go of my nipple and looked down between our bodies, where we were connected. His hand went to my clit and he started massaging it in quick movements. I immediately dug my nails into his shoulders, a loud whimper escaping my lips. "Cum for me, darlin'~…" His voice made me moan loudly and I came around his shaft.
The knot inside me burst and a huge wave rolled over me. "Ahhh, Daryl~! Oh fuck~!" My legs were shaking violently, my whole body was shaking non-stop and I was breathing faster and faster. I felt my secretion spread across my inner thighs and also covering Daryl's cock. And even though I had come, Daryl continued to move, but his movements became more and more sloppy and unrhythmic. "Fuck~…! 'm gonna cum~!" Moaning loudly, he pressed his lips to mine again and the next moment I felt him shooting his hot sperm into me. Moaning loudly, I wrapped my arms around his neck and returned his hungry kiss. We stayed like that for a long time, Daryl still deep inside me, our bodies pressed together and our heartbeat slowly calming down. Daryl moved a little more until he was lying completely still on top of me, our hips pressed tightly together.
"I love ya~…" Daryl then whispered softly against my lips. Smiling, I kissed him gently again before I relaxed and let go of him and took a deep breath. Daryl then slowly pulled out of me, a long sigh escaping him. His body trembled violently as he looked between my legs. His sperm slowly flowed out of me, a loud rumble sounded and made his chest shake briefly. "Tha' was amaizin'…" "Yeah~… it really was…" I then agreed quietly, a gentle smile crept onto my lips.
Our bedroom smelled like sex and sweat, a pleasant smell that I had even missed a little.
After staring at me for a while, Daryl got up to bring a wet towel and clean me up. As soon as he had cleaned my inner thighs and pussy, he kissed my stomach gently and threw the towel into a corner. Then he crawled up to me and pulled me against his chest. He immediately inhaled my scent, his strong arms wrapped tightly around my waist. "I love you, Daryl… good night…" I yawned quietly and closed my eyes. I also wrapped my arms around his waist and smiled slightly. "Goodnigh'… 'love ya too." I heard him whisper quietly before we both fell asleep.

Summertime bookstore, and you.
Pairing: Remus Lupin x fem!reader
Summary: Remus never expected to see a classmate (reader) working at a bookstore during the summer.
Warnings: none really, uses of y/n, Remus having a little crush
Author’s note: hello! It’s my first post, so I had to choose my love, Remus. I don’t have a lot of experiences with writing so this might not be good, I just thought it was a cute idea. Anyways, enjoy this little piece I made. English is not my first language so there should be mistakes in there (sorry!)
Word count: 1,008
———————————————————————————
The bell above the door chimed softly as the door swung open, the warm breeze of a summer’s afternoon outside mended with the cool air of the bookstore. There was a small stack of returned books on the front desk that you stood behind and you were checking them for any damages.
When you looked up, you met eyes with Remus, who was standing hesitantly in the doorway. You seemed to recognize him… barely, the only thing you recalled was sitting beside him in Astronomy class one day.
“Hi,” he said, a bit shyly, as he approached the front desk. “I didn’t know you worked here, y/n.”
And you didn’t, not usually, anyways. You were free for the summer so your uncle asked for your help with the bookstore, saying that it would be a good summertime job for you, since you loved books anyways.
And Remus? He had seen you at Hogwarts before, he remembered that you both took a few classes together and are probably going to be put in similar classes next year too, but he never really knew you. This, however, was a pleasant surprise for him.
“This place is really nice.” His eyes lit up as he glanced around at the tall shelves filled with books of all kinds.
“Thank you… and you’re right, I don’t work here. This is my uncle’s bookstore, I’m just watching over it through the summer.” you said, closing the book you were checking on and smiling at him slightly.
“Ah,” Remus hummed in understanding, the corners of his lips raising in a small smile at your answer. “That makes more sense. I couldn’t really imagine you working in a bookstore.” And then he added quickly, hoping that it came out a bit less rude than intended, “Not that you would be bad at it, I mean, I just wouldn’t label you as the type.”
“Really? I love books, actually.” A small frown came onto your face at his words, seizing the opportunity to tease him a bit.
“No, I didn’t mean it like that,” he said quickly, internally grimacing at how he had inadvertently hurt your feelings. “Of course you love books. I just meant… you seem so adventurous, I guess. Like an outdoorsy type of person, which doesn’t really seem like it would match perfectly with a job inside a shop. That’s all I meant, I swear.”
“Not that I’ve been staring at you a lot at Hogwarts, I mean.” He mentally punched himself for sounding like a stalker now.
A small smirk quirked at your lips, amusement on your face as you watched him ramble. “Of course not, I was just kidding, no need to panic.”
Remus sighed in relief after hearing your response, the anxiousness that had been brewing inside his stomach had faded slowly. His eyes started wandering around the store, almost curiously.
“So what brings you here today?” You asked, resting your forearms on the wooden counter as your eyes stayed on him and how he shifted awkwardly.
“I have a guilty confession,” he looked down at his hands before a smile spread across his lips. “I ran out of books to read.” He leaned in a bit closer and almost whispered.
“Ah, how dare you.” You teased. “Well, I have thousands of books stacked here, just waiting to be read. Wouldn’t you like to look around?”
Remus chuckled at your reply, a small, lopsided smile appearing on his lips. “Guilty as charged… and it’s as if you read my mind, I was hoping you’d say that.”
He ran his fingers along the spines of the books on the front desk, his eyes flickering over them before he looked up at the tall shelves that reached all the way to the ceiling. “Lead the way.”
You got around the counter and walked him through the aisles, giving him a general idea of where everything was. “So what caught your eyes?”
His eyes roamed over all the books and titles and sections quietly in wonder. He hummed thoughtfully as he looked around, feeling a bit overwhelmed by the magnitude of choices that were available.
“That’s a good question.” He said quietly, biting his lower lip as his eyes scanned the books. He was suddenly aware of your presence close by, and when he looked back to you, he realized how close you two were. “Any recommendations, O Great Bookmaster?” He tried to sound confident, he really did, but the way that your body gently brushed against his made his heart thump and his brain go basically flatline.
“Depends on what type of books you’d like to read, my dearest customer.” You responded with a smile, looking up at him while a blush involuntarily made its way across his face.
Remus chuckled softly, his stomach doing a small flip. “Hmm, let’s see. Something fantasy-wise, perhaps, or just a good book in general.” He said thoughtfully, his fingers lightly grazing the spines of the books as his eyes roved over their titles.
“A good read is hard to find nowadays, isn’t it? But don’t worry, I got you.” Your fingers landed on the spine of a book and gently tugged it out of the shelf, handing it to him.
He looked down at the book that was now in his hands, and he tilted it curiously, his eyes taking in the cover. “I’m willing to trust you.” He looked up and smiled softly, looking slightly amused as he added, “You are the bookmaster, after all.”
You checked out the book for him and he waved goodbye, promising to handle it with good care and giving you the permission to hex him if he ever were to damage the book.
As you returned to your stack of books on the front desk, you couldn’t help but smile to yourself. Perhaps this summer job was going to be more interesting than you originally thought.
And perhaps Remus was already planning the next time he’d return and ask for more books… and to see you, of course.

You know, I've been reading things written by people on the internet for my whole life, or at least my whole life after I was about ten. I'm thirty three now. That means there are people whose words I read on the internet twenty years ago who are presumably still around and occupying the internet—sometimes using names I can recognize from back then, too. (hat tip to my fellow "changing usernames is unnatural actually" brethren; I've only changed one myself twice in the whole world since I was about fourteen or fifteen.)
Sometimes I think about a person I see around occasionally on the internet. That person wrote a story about a character in a rather silly fandom we shared, and I read it as a child just beginning to conceptualize being someone whose opinions might matter. And I remember reading that story at some point, because at that age I had a hyperfixation on that character in that fandom at that time and I read pretty much everything in the genre. I never really got to talk to anyone but the inside of my head about it. My friends didn't read fanfiction, and my parents viewed my reading fanfiction as some kind of depraved, shameful secret. Anyway, I read that story and I remember having some kind of deep realization about how adult humans work while I was reading it.
I learned something about the world from that story. (It was one of those insights that are now so molten alongside my core that it's difficult for me to disentangle them from myself, like "people outside you have their own perspective on your behaviors, but that doesn't mean they have to be right.") And I remember that they know it, because they taught it to me, without meaning to. One of the anonymous impacts on readers that writers never see unless they're extraordinarily lucky.
And I smile, because it's lovely to see them again, and they showed me a skill I still use today. We don't have a relationship of any kind—it would be very difficult to recognize me, I think—but they did me a favor a long time ago. And I remember. Now I get to be reminded that this person still exists, and is still a pretty cool human to be around today, at least for the specific circumstance of internet neighbor. Well, and our modern level of concern about once beloved elders from the distant past going terrifyingly cult-addled and bigoted on short notice.
That has not happened in the slightest. They're just still a pretty nice fandom person who is a bit older than me, who is recognizably the same person they have always been, but more intensely and thoughtfully—like a distilled brandy, not a sour vinegar left out on a countertop too long.
Weirdly, that's a thing I find comforting: this tiny, one way, invisible affection. Every so often I feel this intense affection for a person I've never spoken to or about, because I see them and I love them intensely for a moment and then we both go about our days.
Think about how many interactions you have with people as you go about your day. Wouldn't it be nice to imagine that other people feel like that about you?
I think I'm going to imagine that there's one person that read something I said and thinks that about me. I don't need to ever actually know if it's true: I can just imagine someone who happened to be at a formative moment when they learned something against the background of my words. We'll never know each other as our screennames are lost along the years and we move in and out of touch with parts of ourselves, but we still have that little fond impact on one another, those fingerprints in one another's clay.
It's a nicer world to imagine than the one where no one is paying attention to me, or the only people paying attention to me are mean. And there's really no way to ever know for sure, so why not inhabit the pleasant end of the imaginatory pool if you can?

Getting together fic wherein Stephen has a particularly bad hand pain day, and he struggles to hide it from a concerned Tony. Tony offers to give him some painkillers and massage Stephen's hands, and the touch starved, miserable sorcerer accepts. Tony massages his hands until the pills kick in, and then some just because, and eventually Stephen kisses him about it
Word count got completely out of hand. I regret nothing.
Stephen had woken up to throbbing pain in his hands, then had to deal with a manticore accidentally summoned by some idiots trying to summon ‘the devil’, then had to go to the fucking North Pole to close a dimensional rift there, and when he’d finally returned to the Sanctum, it was raining.
Overall, today was a fantastic day.
The Cloak had wandered off to somewhere shortly after their return from the North Pole. So now he sat alone and miserably in his study, grunting under his breath, hands half-buried under the bottom end of the MIT hoodie he was wearing. It was Tony’s hoodie — he’d had the privilege of getting to wear it for the first time only yesterday, and had instantly stolen it — and that was the only semblance of comfort he had right now.
His phone pinged and the screen lit up with a new notification. It was a message from Tony.
Would you like some carbonara?
No.. as nice as it would be to have lunch with Tony, Stephen’s hands wouldn’t even be able to handle the fork, let alone pick up some spaghetti without dropping it all over.
He would only make a fool of himself in front of Tony.
He picked up his phone with a very shaky hand, painstakingly unlocked the screen, and then spent the next few minutes just trying to type out two words without messing up. At times like these, he thought that he should really have accepted Tony’s offer for a better, more accessible, voice-command phone.
But.. but that would be admitting that he couldn’t even do simple, normal, everyday tasks by himself.
No. Stephen was more than capable of doing completely normal tasks all by himself.
He did not need anyone’s help, much less their pity.
After much grueling effort, he had finally typed out the words in his phone. He tapped the send button.
not hungry
His text was was almost immediately marked as read. Tony didn’t send another reply, though.
He realized, a little belatedly, that he probably looked like an asshole. Tony had been trying to invite him to lunch, and he’d outright rejected.
Tony’s typing bubble appeared after a few moments, drawing Stephen’s attention. It disappeared and reappeared a couple of times. But it didn’t take Tony long to send a text.
I’ll bring some over anyway, maybe Wong would like some. I made it, btw. Was proving a point to Capsicle. There’s plenty of leftover.
Oh. Tony had made it himself.
He had wanted to invite Stephen to lunch that he had made himself.
Well. Stephen positively looked like an asshole.
He flopped his head down on his desk, groaning lightly at his own stupidity. He was an utter and complete failure of a partner.
This day just kept getting better.
He turned his head where it rested on the desk to stare out through the window.
There was a time when he used to love the rain. Rain was comfort and calmness. The sound of raindrops hitting the earth was soothing, it made the soil’s scent pleasant, it lowered the temperature to an enjoyable level that made you want to sit near a large window with a book in your lap, a hot cup of aromatic tea on the table in front of you, and just enjoy the weather. What was there to not like about rain?
Now.. now Stephen loathed rain.
The drop in atmospheric pressure was never kind to his hands. It pulled and strained his joints and muscles, until they would scream in pain.
As it stood, that was exactly what the rain was doing to his hands right now.
It had only been a few minutes when the Sanctum notified him of Tony landing on the porch. Quickly getting up from the desk, he changed out of Tony’s hoodie with a quick motion of his hand, changing into his sorcerer robes.
When Tony was in through the door, he reached for the Sanctum’s energy and teleported the genius into his study, who took a second to rebalance himself upon blinking into existence in front of Stephen.
“Ugh, really freaky,” Tony said, shaking his head a little to dispel the momentary disorientation. “You do know that I’m capable of just walking over to you myself, like a normal human being?”
“You’ll live,” Stephen said, reaching for some books lying on his desk to collect them, hopefully making it look like he had been studying and not miserably lamenting over his hands. “And Wong is not on Earth today.” He bit the inside of his cheek to prevent himself from grunting as a particularly sharp sting of pain shot up his right hand when he held three books in a stack.
Oh, is that so.” Tony looked down rather somberly at the bag on his hand, then huffed. “Well, he’ll miss out on the best carbonara ever.”
Stephen looked down at the stack of books in his hands for a moment, then looked up at Tony. “Have you eaten yet?”
Tony shrugged. “Not really.”
“Have you brought enough for two people?”
Tony eyed him curiously. “I’ve brought enough for three people.”
For Tony, he could do this much, right? “Let me put these books back, and then we can eat together?”
Tony smiled, eyes sparkling with delight. “Let’s do that.”
Few minutes later, they in the kitchen.
Tony gleefully served the spaghetti into two plates, setting one down in front of Stephen, and sat down next to him with his own serving.
Stephen stared down at it. God, it smelled heavenly. He had no doubt that it would taste just as amazing. But..
The cursed fork.
Stephen quietly sighed, able to feel Tony’s expectant gaze on him. Well, he’d chosen this.
Tentatively, he picked up the fork with a shaky hand. His grip was shit, and trying to tighten it around the metallic handle made his muscles spasm. With whatever shaky grip he managed, he dug the fork into the spaghetti to try and lift some, that was when he heard Tony curse under his breath.
“Sorry, I didn’t even think of that,” Tony said, getting up. He reached to take the fork off of Stephen’s hand.
“Stop,” Stephen told him firmly, and Tony stilled. “Don’t. I can use a fork just fine, Tony.”
Tony was quiet for a moment. “You don’t have to. We can order something else.”
“No. You made this.”
“Yeah but that was just to prove Capsicle that I do, in fact, know how to cook food and can do it really well. We don’t have to eat this, let’s—”
“I want to,” Stephen insisted, cutting Tony off. “I want to taste the food you’ve prepared with your own hands.”
Tony’s expression was a conflicting mix of concern and warmth. “Alright..” He sat down.
And Stephen wasn’t lying. He really did want to taste food of Tony’s hands. It wasn’t just for Tony’s happiness, though that did make it all the more worth it.
If he had to sit through a bit of pain and struggle for that, so be it.
He tried again, stabbing the fork into the spaghetti, and lifted up a small amount. His hands shook, and some strands of the pasta fell back into his plate. He still managed to put some into his mouth.
Goodness, it was so much better than he’d thought. He let out a low appreciative hum as he chewed it.
“This is.. amazing, Tony,” he told Tony, who preened with a wide grin on his face.
“Of course it is. I made it, after all,” Tony crowed, stuffing his mouth with some spaghetti.
Stephen rolled his eyes and dug his fork into his plate again.
His enjoyment died down rather quickly, as his hand spasmed more with each time he tried to scoop up some spaghetti. It got harder to not drop the strands, or even keep holding on to the fork. Tony must have noticed, he thought, but was choosing not to speak on it.
Stephen preferred it that way.
There was simply no need to make a big issue out of this.
“Here,” Tony said only moments after that, making Stephen turn towards him. The genius was holding his forkful of spaghetti extended towards Stephen.
“What?” Stephen asked.
“Let me feed you,” Tony explained, raising his fork closer to Stephen in emphasis.
Stephen gave him an affronted look. “What? No! I’m not a child.”
Tony rolled his eyes. “You’re a grown ass man who doesn’t know how to ask for help. Yes, I know. That’s why I’m giving it.”
“Tony, I can eat by myself.”
Tony sighed. “Just let me do it, alright? Just like you wanted to eat my dish, I want to do this. It’s an act of service. I like doing it. Lemme do it.”
Douchebag. Using Stephen’s reasoning against him.
Stephen looked down at the fork in his shaking hands, then up at the fork being offered to him by Tony’s firm, steady hand. He sighed and dropped his fork back on his plate.
Tony gave a small, warm smile when Stephen ate from his hand.
“It wouldn’t kill you to ask for help every now and then, y’know,” Tony murmured in a low, gentle voice.
It certainly would kill Stephen’s pride, if not him, to ever ask for help from anyone in this plane of existence.
“You’ll live, I promise,” Tony added rather dryly; whether to his previous statement or if he read Stephen’s mind, Stephen wasn’t sure.
Even now, Stephen thought, he should feel embarrassed for needing help with something so trivial as eating. But..
But he didn’t.
The way Tony fed Stephen and himself with the same fork, eyes so warm and with a brilliance that could make the sun appear dull, the way he genuinely enjoyed servicing Stephen, thoughtful and patient with his action of feeding him.. Stephen didn’t feel like he was being looked down on. He didn’t feel pitied, he didn’t feel disabled.
He simply felt loved.
They ate in relative silence, save for Tony’s occasional rants on something or the other. Stephen was content to just listen and enjoy the closeness.
When they were done, Tony picked up the dishes and moved to the sink to wash them.
“Do you have painkillers?” The genius asked as he placed the clean dishes on the drying rack, and it really shouldn’t have surprised Stephen. Of course Tony had picked up that his discomfort was more than just not being able to hold a fork.
“In my room, yes,” Stephen replied. “But that won’t be needed.”
Tony tiredly rubbed his fingers over his eyes, then gave Stephen a deadpan expression that spoke ‘I’m not taking your bullshit today’.
“Really, it’s fine,” Stephen insisted.
A minute later, they were in Stephen’s room.
Tony made him sit down on the bed, handed him a pill of Naproxen, all the while grumbling under his breath something about ‘stubborn wizards’. Stephen popped the pill into his mouth, and Tony helped him gulp down a glassful of water before setting the empty glass away.
“Does it help to massage your hands?” Tony asked.
Stephen hesitated. He knew what question would follow that one.
But.. but perhaps a part of him wanted to be asked that.
“It does.”
Tony gave him a curious look, eyes open and almost pleading. “Would you let me..?”
Stephen bit the corner of his lip. He looked at the window that showed it to still be raining outside, then down at the hands on his lap, then back up at Tony.
“..Yes.”
Tony’s eyes eased into an invisible smile. He went around the bed, climbed from the other side, and settled himself at center of the large bed, back leaned against the headboard. He coaxed Stephen closer to him, who followed and leaned himself partly against the headboard, partly on Tony, and gave up his hands to Tony’s care.
Tony frowned at Stephen’s robes in distaste. “Are you seriously gonna wear that in bed too?”
Stephen huffed out a breath. He hadn’t exactly given it a lot of thought when Tony had landed in front of the Sanctum; he’d just wanted to hide Tony’s hoodie away.
With a quick motion, he changed into his own comfortable clothes — no, not Tony’s, he would not let Tony claim his MIT hoodie back anytime soon — and then relinquished his hand back in Tony’s hold. “There, happy?”
“Very fucking much. I don’t get how you can put up with wearing that 27 hours a day.”
Tony began to massage his hands. He was so gentle and careful with them, applying the lightest of pressure, massaging from the wrists slowly down to each finger. The touch of his warm fingers on Stephen’s cold ones felt soothing. In between the massage, Tony’s touches, at times, softly traced over the scars. But they never once felt intrusive. They felt like the delicate caress of a flower against a butterfly’s wing, harmless and gentle and so, so careful.
It was nice. It was safety and care and love. The pain was slowly forgotten, and Stephen’s mind was slowly lulled into a state of peace and comfort.
A moderately loud thunder crackled, and Stephen looked at the window to find it was absolutely pouring outside. The temperature had also fallen further by a few degrees. Sitting pressed against Tony and sharing their body heat, the temperature didn’t bother Stephen, nor his hands with how tenderly they were being cared for.
There was no book here, no tea, no large window to watch the rain outside. But, Stephen thought, that this weather was actually rather enjoyable.
Stephen never allowed anyone to touch his hands in such a way, or, hell, touch his hands at all. It was asking for too much trust, too much vulnerability on his side.
But with Tony.. Tony made it easy to lend him the trust, to share this vulnerability. It was so easy to let down his walls, allow this genius man in, and let him carve out a corner for himself in Stephen’s heart.
Vishanti, he was in love with this man, mind, soul, and body.
“How do you feel now?” Tony asked, looking up at Stephen with those brown, beautiful, expressive eyes.
Stephen simply leaned in, capturing his lips in a loving kiss. A sound of surprise escaped Tony’s lips, that turned into a delighted laugh as he reciprocated the kiss. Stephen channeled all of his affection, savoring Tony’s lips, hoping it communicated the sheer love he felt towards the genius.
When they parted, Stephen continued to pepper his jaw with more kisses. “Thank you, Tony,” he said as they leaned their foreheads together.
“Anyday for my Sweetcakes,” Tony said, and Stephen didn’t have to open his eyes to read the content smile on Tony’s face. His voice was more than enough.

The Bad Batch/ Mayday/Rex x Reader Prompts – Confessions
Part 4/7 - Echo
Warnings: Hurt/Angst/Comfort/Fluff/Love Confessions
Masterlist
Ko-Fi (If you feel like giving me some coffee)
This is a continuation of this request :
The Bad Batch/ Mayday/Rex x Reader Prompts – Confessions
Echo
You are alone with Echo. It's a beautiful day, the sun is shining, but it's not too warm. Pleasant conditions for working on the outer hull of the Marauder. It's nice to be alone with Echo, you can talk to him, his attention is only on you and the work you're doing together. It's not often that you're alone together, and every time you do, you promise yourself to talk to him about how you feel about him. But every time you back out and don't tell him. He is always attentive to you, polite, a gentleman, he is anything but dismissive, and yet you are very nervous every time. Today, however, you are determined to confess your feelings to Echo, you just don't really know how. You decide to try dipping your toes in the water first. It seems like a good idea to test what he thinks. A tentative, “Hey Echo,” escapes your lips. He smiles.
“Yeah?” You think for a moment about how you should phrase the sentence before you speak. You want to say the right thing and get an answer from him that you can do something with. “Have you ever thought about looking for a partner? You know, now that we live on Pabuu and all.” Echo raises his eyebrows in surprise and pauses in his work. His eyes wander back and forth thoughtfully for a moment, then his brows draw together critically, and you watch him carefully, feeling the nervousness creeping up inside you again. “No, I haven't really thought about it, not seriously anyway. I spend most of my time working with Rex, with the rebellion. I haven't really retired like the rest of the squad. There's still far too much to do out there.” A quiet, thoughtful, “Hmm,” comes over your lips. That's not exactly what you wanted to hear. Suddenly he adds, “Apart from that, I'm not exactly a great catch, finding a partner might be difficult”
To emphasize his words, he taps his scomp-link arm against one of his artificial legs. You really didn't expect that, and you didn't want to hear it from him. You actually want to talk back and tell him how adorable he is and that anyone would be lucky to have him by their side, but you don't really dare, not yet. You blink, a little nervously. The feeling of heaviness settles in the pit of your stomach. Somehow you had imagined the course of this conversation to be different and, slowly but surely, your courage is failing you. But you don't want to give up just yet. “You've really never thought about it? There is no one who could have awakened this thought in you in any way? Someone who could arouse your interest?” You see his jaw muscles flex, he grinds his teeth, seeming to weigh the words he wants to say. Echo sighs softly and finally says, “No, not really” Your heart sinks for a moment, but then something unexpected happens. Crosshair, who is walking by in the background, grumbles softly, “Liar”
Echo turns around, startled. Irritated, he grumbles, “Where did you come from?” Crosshair continues walking, without turning around he shrugs his shoulders and says dryly, “From the depths of space” You both watch as Crosshair disappears around a corner of a house, then your eyes meet. A nervous smile twitches at the corners of your mouth, while Echo suddenly seems to have a little more color in his face. You ask, curious as well as nervous, “Does Crosshair know something I don't?” The thought that Echo might already have a secret love affair comes to you, and the heaviness in your stomach turns into a full-blown mountain. But of course you don't want to let it show, but you still want certainty. Echo scratches the back of his neck nervously with the scomp link. “Why are you so interested in this?” he asks back, "Any particular reason?"
You shrug your shoulders uncertainly, avoid his gaze and say quietly, almost in a whisper, “Maybe I was hoping you liked me as much as I like you” You hear his footsteps coming closer and finally look at him again. “That's why you asked? Because you like me, um, romantically?” You say meekly, “Maybe” Echo smirks. “ Won't you just admit it?” You bite your lower lip as you feel the smirk infect you. You ask bolder than you feel, “What do I get in return?” Echo looks at you mischievously and takes one of your hands in his. “How about the first of many kisses?”

This isn't really angst but I want to share this idea with you anyways, Nicole and Anby get sick, like really sick, so Billy and Nekomata take care of them, Nekomata goes out to get medicine for Anby and Nicole so Billy does some nice things for them while waiting for Nekomata to come back, like putting a cold towel on their heads and making chicken noodle soup for them, and when doing this he gets to hear some muttered apologies from Anby and Nicole about the way they treat him
AHHH THIS IS SUCH A CUTE IDEA -> i'm on it o^o7
posts might slow down for a little bit, but I'll definitely try and knock out what's already been sent in as speedily as possible while ensuring [hopefully] good quality :D
the other format i tried out didn't necessarily do bad, but i think i'll stick to this one after all. since i created the Master List at long last uWu
"Hey, Manager," Billy says into Nicole's phone, trying to keep his voice as unassuming as possible, "Boss won't be able to make it to your hangout today."
"Oh no!" Belle immediately frets on the other end, "What's going on? Is she okay?"
Well. The goal was not to make her worry. Damnit.
Objective failed.
"She's okay. Her and Anby just came down with a... pretty brutal fever, if I'm being honest. They should be fine in a few days, though at max!"
Hopefully. Billy had heard stories about humans with sickly immune systems that... didn't always survive a fever. The stories had never scared him before but...
"Kitty's out getting some medicine for them right now," the android forces himself to continue, lest he dwell on that too long, "And I'm staying here to make sure their temperatures don't get too high."
That's what you were supposed to do when humans got sick, right? He was kind of just basing everything off Nekomata's experience and one episode of the Starlight Knights where two characters- who should be love interests but weren't- got stranded together on a desert planet and one of them had to take care of the other. But the other wasn't really human or anything- so it was kind of an unreliable source of information.
So he also did a quick google search.
"That's great, Billy," Belle's gentle voice brings him back to the present conversation, "Sounds like they're in very capable hands then. My mind is put at ease."
....oh!
That was nice to hear. That she believed in him.
"Do- do you have any suggestions?" the android ventures, figuring it couldn't really hurt, "I mean- I can totally take care of them on my own, but- surely the legendary, all-knowing Phaethon might have some advice for a plain piece of scrap metal like me...?"
Perfect save.
In the end, Belle doesn't really tell him anything that he didn't already get from Nekomata or from the computer the Hares' all shared. Cold towels, warm soup that's easy on the throat, and lots of rest.
The two Demara's were laid up in one room to prevent contaminating Nekomata. Or him, too, but the only way the android could get sick was via computer virus.
Which- they all learned the hard way. That was not a pleasant experience, nor one he was eager to repeat... but he would if it meant Nicole and Anby could recover faster.
With no time to sit on his thoughts, Billy replaces the cloths on their heads with all the gentleness he can muster. He must- at least- be doing something right, because the two already look more peaceful than they had before the call with the Proxy.
"Mm.. m'sorry.." he thinks he hears Nicole mutter.
Bad dream? He ponders, hastily striding over to fix the towel across her forehead. Maybe she was dreaming of the time Eous shut off in the Hollow and they had thought about turning them in.
Or- Billy had suggested turning them in.
Twasn't his proudest moment. He sincerely hoped Phaethon never found out about that-
"...m'sorry," she mutters again, turning onto her side with a furrowed brow, "..sorry.. Billy.. for yelng' all th'time. You're a good android. Good fr'nd. 'n I... dn't say it... nuff."
...
If he had been built for crying, Billy was sure he'd be making a mess of his faceplate right now.
The things his family team does to him... he was going soft.
As the android fixes both the Demara's towels, as he helps prop them up and spoon feed the delirious duo medicine and soup, and as he tucks them back in for a nice long nap, privately he thinks...
Maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Just a silly little coffee shop trope with Lloyd :]
Word count: 850
Ninjago - Lunch? (Lloyd)
The little cafe you worked in was by no means popular; despite being in the heart of Ninjago city, it was often overlooked. And so you spent many days just watching the huge windows in the front of the store, wondering if any of the swaths of people would chance to step inside.
You did have a few regulars, which you knew by heart, of course. If not because they were always pleasant, then because you really didn’t have many clientele to begin with, so it was only natural that you started to recognize them.
Your eyes were locked on a cute poodle trotting by outside when you heard the little bell above the door ring. You perked up, snapping upright to greet the customer.
A smile came to your face when you saw a familiar (and admittedly attractive) blonde coming closer. He was smiling, too, almost a little shyly as he gave a small wave.
“Hey Lloyd! The usual?” You chirped, already whisking away to grab a cup.
“Yeah.”
You nodded, opening up the refrigerator to retrieve some milk to heat up.
“Not too busy today, huh, Y/n?”
A childish grin stretched your mouth beyond the polite smile you’d already been bearing. “Nope. You know my name?”
He laughed, clasping his hands awkwardly on the counter. “I mean, you’re always the one who’s working when I stop by. Plus it’s on your apron.”
You glanced down at your attire, cheeks darkening a little when you spotted the little name tag. “Oh, yeah.”
You worked in silence for a little while, focusing on getting your measurements right and mixing and not making a mess. You were so focused that you didn’t even feel Lloyd’s deep green eyes fixed on you.
There was a subtle smile curving his thin lips as he watched—though was it from the anticipation of a nice hot chocolate, or something else? He would’ve guessed the former, but he also couldn’t deny the way his heart had skipped a beat when you said his name earlier.
Nor could he deny the way your h/c hair looked in the golden afternoon light… or the way your eyes sparkled with excitement whenever he walked into the store… he always told himself that it was because you were bored, that it was a slow afternoon and he was just providing something to busy you for a few minutes, but he secretly wished it was something more.
But now he was just watching you put whipped cream on the drink. You sprayed a thin layer on top… then kept going… and going… until there was a little mountain towering over the rim of the cup.
You used a Frappuccino lid to top off the cup, in order to preserve the shape of the whipped cream. But you paused before snapping it on, pursing your lips for a second before spontaneously reaching for a bottle of chocolate syrup and drizzling the whipped cream.
“Oh my Master,” Lloyd gawked. “I love you.”
Your eyebrows shot up for a second. Cheeks turning a deep shade of red, you looked at Lloyd with wide eyes.
He had the exact same expression. “Uh…”
You burst into laughter. It became a little more awkward as you tried to control yourself, and you smiled bashfully as you said: “I just know you have a bit of a sweet tooth, so…”
You slid the drink across the counter, wishing your face would stop burning as you rang up his order on the register.
“Thank you,” he murmured, still clearly recovering from severe embarrassment.
Your jaw tightened; his awkwardness was contagious. Your fingers hovered before the screen for a few seconds, and at length you just brought your hand down to rest on the counter. “Tell you what… this one’s on the house.”
You grinned at Lloyd’s shocked response. He went for his wallet anyway, at which point you reached across the counter to hold his arm.
“Really, you don’t have to pay for it. Only ‘cause I like you too.”
The silence was deafening. Lloyd was owl-eyed and ruddy-faced, completely stunned at your words. You almost regretting saying them when he finally burst into the brightest smile you’d ever seen; not just on him, but on anyone.
“Does that mean you’ll let me take you out to lunch sometime?”
“I’d love lunch.”
Lloyd just kept on smiling, fumbling foolishly for his drink. “Cool,” he said, as if he thought he were dreaming.
As he walked out the door, he turned around suddenly and smiled at you one last time. He’d clearly spotted the phone number you wrote on the cup’s little cardboard cuff.
When he was finally out of sight, you patted your cheeks, trying to smack the color out of them. It certainly didn’t help that the image of Lloyd was stuck in your mind like a frozen TV screen. That rosy-cheeked grin he’d given you… it was truly unlike anything you’d ever seen.
I wonder if I can make him smile like that again.
Now it was your turn to smirk. Lunch. You couldn’t wait.
Thanks so much for reading! Might make a part 2 hehe ;o Anyway, take care lovelies!! <33

Can You Keep A Little Secret? 2
Dreamworks films have no right having such good soundtracks. The whole time I wrote this I listened to this and this. The second one isn't a Dreamworks song, but Scary Bitches is such a good band and I want more people to know about them tbh. The first song also is not about me, as I am neither big nor chunky, but hey, who doesn't love someone who is big and chunky? I'm sure everyone can relate to that song as either the person singing or the person being sung to. Dividers made by @/cafekitsune.
Similarly to the last part, this fic is aimed at sort of anyone, but the reader's physical body has afab features. It's not really mentioned in this chapter, but it will come into serious play later.
TW for: lots of confusion, semi-shy reader, MORE creep behavior, a lot of introspection in this chapter, one (1) weird middle-aged man, reincarnation. These warnings will get worse, and this takes place when all characters are 18+.
Part 1 here!
Monday comes with the regular stress. You slept like a newborn and your new mom came over to congratulate you. She’s sweet, but her excitement was not contagious. If anything, it just stressed you out more. At least she made dinner when she came over. Always excellent when you don’t have to do that on your own.
On Sunday, you make a night of getting ready for your doom tomorrow. Your agent sent you an email on Friday, including the shot location.
Monday morning, you call up your new father, who apparently wakes up every morning at four to relax before he has to be productive, and he sends over Devin and a car to take you to the set. Devin, as it turns out, is an elderly man with cataracts and your father’s trusted chauffeur. You aren’t convinced as he takes turns way too hard, your cupcake-shaped backpack sliding on the back seat. When he drops you off, he hands you a hard candy and wishes you a good day before he takes off speeding. The candy looks like it’s older than you. You slip it in your pocket.
You imagine you’re lucky, since when you walk up to the tents, you don’t see Epel. You’re not ready for the rollercoaster of emotions he inspires in you. Instead is a group of three people around your age- college kids- and a grouchy-looking middle-aged man. You take a nervous seat on one of the nearby stools.
You were certain you’d been silent, but as soon as you’re settled, the whole groups’ heads snap to stare at you. A woman with ocean-green hair walks over and holds out her hand.
“My name isn’t important right now, ohmygod it’s so nice to meet you!” She squeals, shaking the everloving fuck out of your arm, “Oh, who am I kidding? My name is Belle!”
“Uh… nice to meet you, Belle?” You say, smiling awkwardly.
“Ahhh! You’re not mean at all! Those tabloids don’t know what they’re talking about. Who believes that greasy, gossipy shlock anyway, huh?” She talks a mile a minute.
Another woman with dark hair walks over, smiling somewhat awkwardly, “Belle, you’re scaring the poor thing. I’m Argon. Yes, like the gas. No, I don’t have IBS.”
You’re not sure why she decided to clarify that, but it’s not your problem. The third person and the middle-aged man stroll over.
“I’m Starlo. You’ll be in these meaty paws today.” The middle aged man says. It’s not a pleasant introduction, and if anything, it makes you want to turn tail and run.
You nod along regardless, and the other man jabs out his hand, “Pepper.”
“It’s nice to meet all of you.” You say politely.
Belle drags you out of the stool and towards a trailer, the only one on the lot. She shoves you in and you feel the want to leave grow stronger.
She’s so bubbly. She talks fast and she talks with her hands, “This is you and Epel’s dressing room! I know it’s not ideal, so that’s why it’s got a divider. He’s a gentleman anyway, so it doesn’t matter, I’m sure. Starlo will be in shortly to do some makeup tests, and then once Epel gets here, we’ll go over the script and the visions we have, and then that’s all for today. I’m so excited to work with you guys. Oh! That’s right! We were gonna go to that traditional Scalding Sands place after we’re done here. I don’t have your contacts, but if you wanted to come along, that would be amazing. You seem so sweet.”
You’re legitimately unsure how to respond to any of that. She also seems very sweet, and you really don’t want to get stuck in a coffee shop with Epel afterwards. Unfortunately, as she was speaking, the devil himself showed up. You didn’t notice him at first, but you felt your skin crawl when he did. He's got his silky lavender hair pulled off of his shoulders in a little tail at the nape of his neck. You open your mouth to say that you’d love to get shawarma with this motley crew, but he beats you to it.
His pretty blue eyes never leave yours, “Oh, you’re just a peach for offering, but we’ve already got plans.”
Belle spins around to face him, screams, and swoons. You manage to stumble forward and catch her, and Epel’s smile drops as he slinks across the room, spins one of the crappy foldable chairs around, and plops himself into it, elegantly resting his ankle on his knee. For all of two minutes, he just stares at you as you lay Belle down, stuffing some fabrics under her feet, and fanning her face.
When Belle comes to, his smile is back. She jumps to her feet and begins fawning over him, shaking his hand just as excitedly.
“Hi! I’m Belle! Oh, my god, you’re even prettier in person, and ooh, you smell so nice too.”
Epel laughs, but it doesn’t hit your ears right. Belle eats it up and you glance at the door. She’s got him distracted. It would be so easy just to leave, to feign an illness and walk to the nearest cornerstore so you could call a taxi or a rideshare.
You’re not lucky, though, as Starlo strolls in just as you’re about to go for the door, “Belle, what the hell are you doing? Argon and Pepper are waiting for you.”
She literally squeaks like a mouse and waves a quick goodbye. Starlo grabs you by the arm and deposits you in the other foldable metal chair, clearing his throat repeatedly as he pulls over a stool and drags out an industrial size makeup kit.
The first makeup that he swatches both tingles and is way too light a color for your skin tone. You blink rapidly, unsure if you should say anything.
“You gonna get the same thing you always do?” Epel asks.
“What?” You turn your head to look at him.
He’s wearing a patient expression, but like always, it feels artificial. “From that bagel place.”
“Uh… I-I’m sorry?”
“I know you didn’t forget. I’m taking you to brunch after all this.”
“Uh… haha, yeah.” You don’t know what you always get from the bagel place.
Starlo daubs something else on your arm. It’s cold, but it looks really pretty on your skin.
The “you” that everyone has been expecting sounds like an outspoken, opinionated person who was consistently late or absent from various responsibilities, and if your new mom is anything to go by, neglecting their own health. You almost wish you had a bit more to go off so you could start acting like this you, but you’re not too keen on speaking your mind with people you don’t know. Your entire life has been hit with a cosmic “reset from most recent save” button, and if you dare to mention it to anyone, you’re in for a whole new set of problems.
Whatever Starlo just put on your arm burns. You yelp and jerk away, and he grabs your wrist. You think it’s instinctive, but his grip is nothing to sneeze at.
“What’s the matter?” Starlo asks.
“I- You’re crushing my wrist.” You mumble, “And I don’t know what that last one was, but it burned.”
“It burned?” He pulls out a bottle of the wrong shade of foundation and looks at it, “Huh. No wonder. Damn thing is expired.”
“Why are you even using that one?” Epel asks. Although his tone sounds innocent, the question is outright confrontational, “It’s way too dark.”
“Are you the makeup artist here, son?” Starlo shoots back.
“I usually do my own makeup. I know it’s not the same, but anyone with eyes can see that you’re going about your business the wrong way.”
You keep your lips sealed. What are you even supposed to say here? Other than that last product, he’s been fine. His hand on your wrist feels crushingly uncomfortable, of course, but he’s not doing any of this on purpose. You skimmed the script, but you’re not really sure what the story is about. It’s all of your jobs to try to make it come together, and if that means that you’re going to be wearing a foundation two shades too dark for you, then perhaps that’s what art is. As you were thinking, Starlo let go of your wrist in favor of getting in Epel’s face.
“-no two-bit, fucking stuck up little prick like you is gonna tell me how to do my damn job. You understand?”
Epel is smiling sweetly even as the older man’s spittle is spraying him in the face. He stands up, and Starlo steps back, as though expecting Epel to start swinging. Instead, he walks over to you, grabs your hand ever so delicately. The contact makes your skin crawl as he yanks you to your feet.
“You should apologize before the two of us walk off set right now.” He said, still smiling.
You can’t just walk off set. You don’t think you can, at least. Your agent was so excited for the positive PR this would create, and this is genuinely not a big deal, “Wait-”
Starlo’s eyes narrow, and it hits you that maybe he sees what you see when you look at Epel. A two-faced creature masquerading as a man. You’ve seen one of his sides clearly, but you’re certain you haven’t seen all of the other one, even when he called you on Thursday. It’s like seeing someone standing at the end of a hallway with their back to you: the sight is enough to give you chills, but you aren’t able to see the knife that the person is holding in front of them. That sort of thing. You’re aware of the danger, but can’t comprehend the depth of it.
Despite all, Starlo acquiesces, showing his palms and shaking his head, “Yeah, I’m sorry. Doctor says I gotta work on my temper.”
“You do.” Epel responds flatly, releasing your hand and reclaiming his seat.
The rest of the test is short. Starlo is pretty competent, and he makes it quick and sweet.
That seems to be the theme for the rest of the day. Starlo remains in the trailer to dispose of a few expired things and note down what you had reactions to, while you and Epel meet up with Belle, Argon, and Pepper to talk about the short film.
It’s going to be a story of lovers, unfortunately, but you get to play the part of the dead one. The story goes that your and Epel’s characters came out here to camp, but you froze to death in the night. Epel returns to the campsite every year in your memory, and you return from the land of the dead in his. On the night shown in the film, you finally bump into each other, and through the emotional reunion, you spend one final night camping together.
Epel smiles and nods along with what the three film students say, all too eager to whisk you away as soon as the first shooting date is scheduled and you have an extra copy of the script in your sweaty hands.
He drags you towards a very cute little compact car in candy apple red and opens the door for you. You don’t want to get in, but you also don’t want to call Devin. You take a seat and he closes the door. As you’re buckling up, he gets in the driver and starts the car, just sitting there for a second before he buckles and backs out of the lot, his arm on the back of your seat.
You look out the window and Epel grunts, his voice no longer sweet and charming and fake, “What the hell’s wrong with you?”
You turn your head sharply, “What?”
He sighs, drumming his fingers on the wheel as he blinks. You wonder if he’ll leave it at that until later, and then he says, “You’ve been acting real weird. You been talking to someone?”
“What are you talking about?”
He narrows his eyes in a glance at you, and then he swerves the car in a wrong turn. “I think you know. People don’t change overnight. Where were you that week no one could get ahold of you?”
“I was… in my apartment?”
He doesn’t say anything for a moment. You’re in the city by now, the sun reflecting off of the skyscrapers’ windows in an aggressive manner, “And over the course of that week you decided you didn’t like being a bitch no more?”
“I don’t-”
“Every time I saw you, for years, it was the same thing.” He turns again, going in a circle around the block, “Same shit. Every day. Making fun of my upbringing, like I didn’t know you barely had one, calling me everything out of my name, and now suddenly you’re…”
His voice trails off. You contemplate throwing the door on your side open and jumping out of the car. You absolutely do not need this. You’re already stressed out.
“Well… suppose I shouldn’t complain. I do like you better this way.” He mutters. “But way back when, when you pulled shit like this, it was because you were plotting something. That your game now? You-”
“I… I’m sorry for being so mean to you in the past.” You’re not apologizing for anything you did, but you’re grasping aimlessly trying to de-escalate this one-sided conversation. He’s driving. If you don’t do something, he could decide to swerve off the road and kill you both, “There was no reason for it.”
He’s silent for a moment, and then he says, “That… means a lot. I already forgave you. Told myself I wouldn’t quit trying to be friends. Guess it paid off, huh? I’m sorry for getting angry when we talked, Thursday before last.”
You don’t like that at all. It sort of feels like he’s not saying everything, like you should know what he’s talking about. You don’t. You weren’t living in this body Thursday before last. You nod and look out the window, “Uh… I appreciate it.”
You don’t actually care, but you’re a good actor. You’ve already decided that you’re going to just go along with Epel’s brunch and then you’re going to pretend he doesn’t exist outside of work. Frankly you’re unsure why the person who used to live in this body had his number or interacted with him for years, evidently.
Epel parks and you have a minor crisis as you try to figure out what you typically get from this bagel shop. It doesn’t matter anyway, since he orders you a large caramel iced coffee and a blueberry bagel with cream cheese. That’s such a basic order, but it’s simple enough to be good. You sit quietly and eat, not interested in making conversation.
Epel clears his throat. He’s quiet, but he’s talking in that schooled version of his voice again, “You ever hear back from that breeder?”
“Uh… the what?” You narrow your eyes.
Epel is leaning on his hand, a sweet little smile on his lips as he looks at you. Seven, you want him to look away, “The sphynx cats. You said you sent them an email a while ago during that meeting we had with Mirelle after our big public argument.”
“Oh. I haven’t checked.” You didn’t know you should have. You take a sip of the iced coffee and look out the window.
Epel hums and a stranger walks over, grinning, “Oh my goodness! It’s actually you! Can I have your autograph, Mr. Felmier?”
“Oh, just Epel is fine. Sure!” He’s all smiles as he interacts with the fan, but as soon as they’re gone, his face falls and he nudges your hand, “C’mon, I’ll walk you home.”
“O-oh, no, that’s alright-”
“You want to make another big scene?”
You force a smile and grab your iced coffee, following after Epel. He nudges your hand with his own, but you pull your hand away, covering it up with adjusting your clothes and holding your nearly empty coffee cup with both hands. Your hands are slick with more than just condensation.
You’re all too aware of your surroundings, especially the way that he somehow knows the key code to the door of your apartment building to get you in without a fob. You pause in the lobby.
“Thanks so much for walking me back, Epel. See you tomorrow.” You smile and turn to walk towards the stairs.
Epel grabs the back of your shirt and tugs you back a bit. You stumble against him and he frowns at you.
His expression should tug at your heartstrings, and yet… “You’re not gonna invite me up?”
This poses a dilemma. There are a few people watching this interaction. You can’t afford to make any type of scene, but you absolutely do not want to be alone with him. While you don’t know him well, your body does. Something also tells you that he’s a bit of a danger to be around in general. Call it a gut instinct.
“Uh… Well, maybe you could walk me to my door?” You have no intention of letting him in your apartment.
His eyes narrow ever so slightly, but he smiles regardless, and loops his hand through your sweaty one, strolling confidently towards the stairs.
About as soon as he lets go of your hand to ascend the stairs, you bolt up the stairs, your palms slapping against the dirty concrete to keep you from bashing your face. You’re glad you didn’t wear pumps today as you get to the third floor, careening down the hallway and fumbling your keys as you shakily unlock the door. You lock it behind you, slumping to the floor.
Tomorrow is gonna suck absolute ass for you.

Chapter 5
Series Summary: Gemma is definitely Cassidy James' favourite Styles family member, considering they are best friends and all. And especially considering that Harry Styles is Gemma's smug and self-centered younger brother. Her life isn't perfect, and neither is she, but she knows for a fact that anything involving Harry gets messy.
Chapter Summary: Things are changing, for the entire world, so Harry and Cassidy navigate their friendship through the new situation that everyone now finds themselves in. Will things ever be the same as they were?
Chapter Warnings: Some explicit language, Covid-19, lockdowns & quarantines, mild injury, potential jealousy, wine consumption
[ present - March 2020 ]
With her phone held in front of her face, Cassidy quickly scans the vicinity of the room, through the door frame, making sure Cecelia is not within earshot.
"At least half of the country is on edge." She states quietly, eyes still glancing around to look out for her toddler. The little one doesn't need to hear or sense any concern that is present in their current conversation.
"It's the same here. The new travel ban isn't helping." Harry replies, sighing as he dips his head down. "It's the uncertainty of things. No one knows what's going to happen. It's as if the future is hazy."
"Hopefully it's nothing to be too concerned with." She responds, yet feeling a mild tightness in her chest. Just like Harry said, it's the uncertainty that worries her.
"On to a more positive subject, if things settle down, are you doing anything for Mother's Day? It's in a few weeks, yeah?"
Cassidy's shoulders raise in a shrug, an odd and solemn feeling rushing over her. She's never truly celebrated the holiday. When she was younger, her father obviously never did anything for her mum. Not anything good, anyway. Cassidy tried to do fun things with her, but it wasn't much. When she became a mum herself, there wasn't another person in the home besides her baby girl, so no one else was there to share in the traditional festivities of the day. Not that she wanted a big fuss anyway. Besides, this is the first year that Cecelia is even remotely aware that there is anything special about it. Needless to say, it has yet to be anything but another day of the week up until this point, so she hasn't thought to do anything specific.
"I don't know. It's like Valentine's Day, we'll probably just keep it simple."
"Nope." Harry states with a strong shake of his head. "I'm texting my mum."
"Don't you dare, Harry!" Cassidy exclaims, wishing she could reach through the screen to stop his plan from going any further, whatever it may be.
"You can't just do nothing for Mother's Day, Cass! You're a good mum! You should do something!"
"Harry, I swear to god-"
"Too late!" He proclaims triumphantly, that smug little smirk appearing immediately. Cassidy gives him the most intense glare she possibly can, hoping he can feel it somehow on the other end of the video chat.
"I hate you."
"That's not very nice…" He pouts, causing him to receive an eye roll of an unamused nature. "May I please talk to Cece? She's much more pleasant."
"Yeah, well, that's because she actually likes you." Cassidy quips, mimicking his mischievous smirk to add to her sarcastic insult.
"Hey…" Harry states. "Bloody hell. You're a grump today…"
Cassidy chews on the corner of her bottom lip. She knows she's being a bit too snappy. She isn't meaning to. All the talk, and worry, about this new virus that is spreading rapidly, it's getting to her a bit more than she expected. It doesn't help that she just started her menstrual cycle, and that Cecelia woke up multiple times during the night with a sudden onset of bad dreams.
"Sorry about that." She sighs, looking up to her phone, finding Harry's eyes attempting to flicker over her features through the video call. "It's just that things aren't really going very well today."
"Do you… you don't have to… but do you want to talk about it?"
Much to her annoyance, Cassidy cannot help the small flutter in her stomach at his concern and willingness to help. It hasn't even been that long but he really has become one of her closest friends.
"It's…" She chuckles, feeling just slightly awkward enough to stop herself before talking to him about her physical female issues. "Woman stuff."
"Ah. Okay." Harry responds, nodding as if he understands exactly what she means. Though, he might. He grew up with two women in the household, and has obviously dated a number of them too. Even still, it's not something she's willing to go into detail about.
"Also, Cece didn't sleep well last night." Her lips tense together in an awkward smile, and Harry presents a more sincere pout at the new information.
"That's no good." He replies, a slightly sad tone to his words.
"I'm sure she really would love to talk to you, actually." She admits, no longer with her comical demeanor.
"Alright. Send me over to her." He smiles, causing Cassidy to do the same.
She gets up from the edge of her bed, walking into the living room where she, of course, finds her daughter colouring across multiple pages of paper.
"Hey Bug, Harry wants to say hi."
Cecelia immediately drops her crayons and bounces in her place on the floor, waiting for her mum to bring over the phone. Cassidy giggles at her daughter's excitement and looks at her phone to switch the camera view for Harry to see the little girl's anticipation.
Suddenly, she is halted and instantly feels a shooting pain through her foot, originating from her pinky toe. Her hands fly up and she turns around to watch in agony as her phone lifts into the air and then falls onto the floor, smacking down against the tile in the kitchen.
"Oh for fu-... for crying out loud!" She shouts, holding back the true words she wants to release, for the sake of setting a good example for her daughter.
"Umm… hello? What happened? It's dark over here." She hears Harry say as she wobbles over and retrieves her device. "Are… are you alright?"
"I stubbed my damn toe." She growls, turning it over to find the back camera cracked all the way through. Shattered would be a better description. "And the camera is broken."
"Is it salvageable?"
"I doubt it. I can't do much about it anyway. I don't have the time right now to get a new one. Figures." She sighs, grinding her teeth down enough to feel pain in her jaw. She is usually better at handling or at least hiding her frustration, but her hormones and lack of sleep, as well as everything going on in the world, have just built up inside and this was the thing to tip her over. "Nothing is going my way today."
For some reason, she brushes off the phone, as if the dusting off would solve her problems, and then walks back over to Cecelia, whose eyes are wide open, clearly trying to use her three year old brain power to understand what just unfolded in front of her.
"Is Harry still on da phone?" Cecelia asks, her face changing to one ready for disappointment.
"Yes he is." Her mum replies, flipping the camera view back to face her, handing the device over to her daughter, and plopping down onto the sofa behind her.
"Harry!"
"Hello Cece!" He exclaims back, with just as much enthusiasm as he received. "What are you doing today?"
As Cecelia lifts up each of her drawings to proudly show them off, Cassidy examines her now throbbing toe, discovering the nail half snapped off, and she grimaces at the pain.
She leans forward and rests her elbows on her thighs, pinching her nose between her finger and thumb, squeezing her eyes shut. This isn't the worst thing to happen to her, and it isn't the worst day she's ever had. Not even close. Quite a few from her childhood could easily win that title. But, the sense of feeling overwhelmed still manages to hit her hard, and tears begin to sit on her lower lash line.
"Yeah, but Mummy helped-ed me when I had da bad d'eams."
"You have a very good mum." Harry states, causing Cassidy's head to snap up, seeing his gaze switch between her and Cecelia. His subtle smile pulls her out from the downward spiral of negativity, just enough to straighten her posture.
"She's da best mummy ever!" Her daughter exclaims, and Cassidy's eyes begin to water again, forming out of gratitude now instead of helplessness.
"Could you give the phone back to your mum, please?"
"Yeah, 'kay. Buh-bye Harry!" Cecelia waves to the forward facing camera, thankfully still working for this interaction, and hands the phone back to Cassidy. She quickly swipes a finger over each cheek, clears her throat, and lifts up the device to be in full view of the man on the other end.
"Cass, are you sure you're okay?" He asks, so much compassion in his voice that even the hardest of hearts would not be able to reject it. She's almost positive that statement would have changed her mind about him when they were younger. Possibly.
"I'll be alright." She replies, unsure of the honesty behind her answer, but certain that she does not want to burden him with any of these minimal problems.
"I'm here to help if you need me, okay? Well, I'm here, in Los Angeles, but the sentiment still remains." He chuckles, and Cassidy cannot hold back the small laugh she instinctively lets out.
"Thank you." She replies, knowing his generous heart, and not being one to hold back from doing what he can for a friend.
"No problem. But I should get going, and get a bit of sleep."
"Wait… what time is it there…?"
Harry pulls his lips inward, tightly, and closes his eyes, being accompanied by a subtle shake of his head.
"Harry…"
"It's 1 in the morning." He utters, scrunching up his face with the admission.
"Oh my god, Harry! We wouldn't have rung if we knew what time it was there! Why did you answer the phone in the middle of the night?"
"I couldn't ignore a call from one of my best friends, and her mum!"
"Piss off. You're horrible!"
"And you're still a grump. G'night!"
Cassidy rolls her eyes and watches Harry give a quick wink before reaching in front of him and ending the call. She locks the screen and reaches to place it in her pocket when she feels a notification cause her phone to buzz. She brings it back around and opens her messages to see a couple of texts from Anne.
🗨️ Anne: come over on mother's day
🗨️ Anne: and that's non-negotiable
"Oh for fucks sake." She whispers. "I'm going to kill him."
•••
Curled up on the couch in a blanket, fingers tapping away on the laptop sitting on her thighs, Cassidy groans at the sudden rapping at the front door. The thought crosses her mind to ignore the stranger on the other side, but the knocking continues, so she figures an answer to their persistence will shut it down sooner.
She angrily swings the door open, ready to scowl at the intrusion, when she is halted by the sight of her best friend.
"Bloody hell, CJ!" Gemma exclaims, her eyes wide. "Why weren't you answering the door?"
"I was trying to avoid the annoying person who was interrupting my day." Cassidy chuckles, feeling thankful it was simply her friend, and slightly guilty that she didn't respond to her sooner.
"Annoying?" Her friend drops her jaw in disbelief. "Bit rude considering I brought you some coffee!"
Cassidy's eyes travel down to the to-go cups in her friend's hands, and can already feel the warmth of the drink inside.
"Just let me in and then drink this immediately, for fucks sake." Gemma adds, bringing Cassidy's eyes back up as she opens the door.
Gemma makes her way in and directly over to the sofa, instantly settling herself in as Cassidy takes a seat to the side of her.
"So, what's up?" She asks, taking a sip of beverage she has just been handed.
"I can't just visit my best friend?" Gemma replies.
Cassidy immediately lets out a laugh. Despite loving to spend as much time together as they can, and do, she knows her friend too well to ignore the expression all over her features.
"Not when your face looks like that!" Cassidy points out. Gemma opens her mouth in dramatic fashion, attempting to portray offense at Cassidy's assumption of ulterior motives.
"Fine. I heard that you're spending Mother's Day with me and Mum…" Gemma states. Cassidy subtly grumbles at Harry's sneaky plan to get her to celebrate the holiday. She definitely plans to give him a few words about inconveniencing his own family, just to get her out of the house. "I was hoping you could help me figure out what I can get for her."
"Shit." She responds, thankful that her daughter is currently at daycare and not within earshot of the curse words that just have, and will most likely continue, to be uttered during their conversation.
"Right? Why is she so difficult to buy for?" Gemma whines, pouting as if she were a toddler herself, again.
"She's just always so fucking generous that she never wants or asks for anything for herself."
The pair laugh at the notion of complaining about how selfless Anne is, though they love her for it. Cassidy likes to think that Cecelia's contentment for anything and everything she receives has come from the influence of that wonderful woman. Neither Anne nor Cecelia care too much about what they have or are doing, as long as it's with the people closest to them, which sparks a small idea.
"Why don't we treat her to a fancy afternoon tea time somewhere?" Cassidy perks up with excitement, one she can actually get on board with if the celebration must include herself. "She's always wanted to go to Claridge's, right?"
"Yes! That's perfect!" Gemma exclaims, pulling her phone out swiftly and bringing it in front of her. "I'm going to tell Harry so he can pitch in."
"You're making him contribute? He's not even here." Cassidy chuckles.
"So? She is his mum too… and I'm pretty sure his bank account can handle it."
Her statement is true, and Cassidy is once again reminded of just how big a star her friend Harry is. It boggles her mind that she grew up with him, that she actually grew up with the now famous Harry Styles, because she still doesn't really think of him that way unless and until it's brought to her attention in certain situations. But, she realizes that as his career continues growing, his celebrity status is a fact that is becoming more and more prominent to her.
Cassidy takes another sip of her coffee and a sudden knock at the door causes both of them to immediately snap their attention towards that direction.
"I have no idea who that could be…" She states, turning back to her friend as if Gemma would have more of a clue.
"So then answer the bloody door, CJ." Gemma chuckles, rolling her eyes as her thumbs type out a message on her phone.
She gets up, hastily making her way over, and opens the door to find a man standing in front of her with a decent sized box in his hands.
"Miss James? Miss Cassidy James?" The man asks, and as she looks over his attire, she notices that he doesn't appear as someone who usually makes deliveries.
"Umm… yes, that's me…" She responds timidly, only leaving the door open enough to view the stranger on the other side.
"Excellent. I have a package here for you from Mr. Styles." He explains, lifting the box in full view with a pleased smile on his face.
"I'm sorry, what?"
The man looks down to the object in his hands, glancing over the information typed out on the printed label.
"Mr. Styles asked me to deliver this to you as soon as it arrived." The man clears his throat, which causes Cassidy to shift in place. "He said that he didn't want just anyone to bring it to you and to personally make sure you received it."
Her mouth opens slightly but her brain seems to be unable to form words. Without her ability to function normally, she gives the man a simple nod to thank him, retrieving the box through the doorway.
"Have a good day, miss." He states, responding with his own nod and a smile as he walks away, and Cassidy closes the door behind him.
As she makes her way back to the sofa, her expression immediately turns into confusion, and her curiosity begins to heighten. She is completely unsure as to what Harry could have sent her way, especially considering he is held up in an entirely different country.
"What in the-?"
"Just open it! I want to know what's inside!" Gemma squeals, bouncing in her spot much like something Cecelia does quite often when she is excited.
"You don't know?"
A simple head shake from her friend gives her the boost of interest to grab the mysterious package and pull it into her lap.
She looks to the small table to the side of the couch, quickly finding a pair of scissors that are just sharp enough to cut the tape. A few snips and the box is free to reveal what's inside. Cassidy gives a quick look to her friend, finding comedy in the giddiness they both suddenly begin to feel.
She pries open the top, reaching in and pulling out a box of chocolates. It's not something that needed to be sent to her or delivered by a man in a nice coat, but nonetheless, she won't complain.
The sweets are set next to her as she brings her attention to something else she seems to have been gifted. As her eyes meet the item inside, shock takes over the function of her body, as well as inhibiting any words to leave her lips, yet again.
"Well…?" Gemma asks impatiently, leaning forward and peering to get a view for herself. "A phone? Why did he send you a phone?"
Cassidy's focus shoots over to a paper flush against the side and pulls it out to find a note from the man in question.
CHOCOLATES TO FIX THE ATTITUDE PROBLEM AND A NEW PHONE TO FIX THE CAMERA ISSUE.
- H
"I'm seriously going to kill him." She whispers to herself, not knowing if Gemma was aware of the sentence she just spoke.
"I agree with the attitude problem. You've been quite moody. I suppose that's understandable though." Gemma jokes, pushing her shoulder against Cassidy. "But what's wrong with your phone?"
She lifts herself enough to pull the device out of her pocket, handing it over as she continues to glance over the new one now in her hands, removing the plastic from the outside container.
"Yeah, this camera is done for." Gemma states, placing the broken phone into the box in replace of the updated version. "How did Harry know that you needed a new one?"
Cassidy suddenly feels a miniscule version of something she experienced a long time ago. Something she felt after both times that she and Harry had sex. Nerves. And a dose of guilt. Yet, it's a ridiculous thing to be feeling. This is not the same situation in the slightest. She and Harry are friends, and that's all. And what's more, Gemma knows they are friends. Unlike her lack of awareness of the other incidents. It has to be residual effects from the past, because there is absolutely nothing for her to be worried about.
"We were on a video call when it happened." She replies, finally taking her eyes from her gift and landing them on her best friend, being met with a mildly inquisitive, raised brow.
"Oh, okay." Gemma plainly responds, her simple answer reassuring Cassidy.
"Yeah, me and Cece. I hurt my foot and dropped my phone." She shakes her head in remembrance of the event that felt so tragic when she was in the middle of it. "I told him I couldn't get a new one yet. Apparently he took it upon himself to do just that."
"He's that kind of guy." Her friend explains with a shrug, as if it's something Cassidy should automatically know. But then again, that's all she has been experiencing from him since their friendship started, so she truthfully shouldn't be surprised.
"He didn't need to do this." She utters, still having the instinct to turn down the kind gesture.
"He knows that. But it's not going to stop him. He takes care of his friends and family."
"I'm becoming very aware of that fact." Cassidy exhales with a single, subtle sound of a laugh.
"I'm just glad you two are finally getting along."
The surprise of the comment causes Cassidy's heart to stop along with her breath.
"What?"
Gemma turns her body towards her, rolling her eyes at the question she was just asked, as if the answer should be obvious.
"You two were insufferable around each other when we were kids."
"Well, I mean, he-"
"Oh, don't get me wrong, Harry was definitely a major pest, still is at times to be honest. But, come on, you were exactly the nicest to him either." Gemma explains, and Cassidy can all but keep from readjusting in her seat. "I guess I just thought you both would grow up and grow out of it, and end up… ummm, you know, being friends. Eventually. Or at least not hating each other!"
Flashbacks flood Cassidy's mind as she remembers back to their childhood. Not once did she think that her friend felt anything but the same annoyance that she herself felt.
"Shit. I'm sorry, Gem."
Her friend raises a hand to wave off the apology, as if it wasn't needed, though Cassidy feels otherwise.
"Yeah, well. It was only torture for me, for about twenty years…" She thankfully giggles, helping Cassidy's sudden guilt to lessen in intensity. "So just stay friends for an equal amount of time, at least, and we will call it even."
The thought of being Harry's friend for that long causes Cassidy's stomach to tighten and her lungs to inhale a deep breath. It's a reaction she wasn't prepared for, and one that's indiscernible at the moment. Although, she can acknowledge that it isn't of a negative nature.
"Be around Harry for that long?" She smirks, looking back down to the new phone just gifted to her by the man himself. "I can't make any promises. I already want to clobber him for this!"
•••
The bouncing of her leg does not help the impatience she feels as she waits for the call to be answered from the other end. She double checks the time, hoping that her calculations are correct, and that she can catch Harry as his morning begins.
Suddenly, the ringtone from the video call disappears and her gaze is met by a tousle-haired Harry.
"Oh my god. Did I wake you up?" She immediately questions, her heart racing with worry that she may have disrupted his sleep.
"No. Not at all." He chuckles, a coffee mug being brought up to his lips, covering up the small smile that has appeared at her exasperated question. "And good morning…"
"Good morning." She replies with a sigh of relief, and she notices the smile still stuck on his face when it is revealed to her again. "Umm… I wanted to give you a quick ring to thank you."
"No problem." He quickly states, with a raise of his eyebrow immediately following his words. "Wait, thank me for what?"
Cassidy can't tell if he truly doesn't understand what she is referring to, or if he is arrogantly playing dumb to get her to elaborate, but either way she feels a mild sense of embarrassment creep out onto her cheeks.
"For the chocolates, of course." She jokes, holding up the box that already has half of it's contents consumed. "But mostly for the phone. Harry, you-"
"I'm going to stop you right there." He interrupts, sternly but somehow also sweetly.
"Right. I know. You like doing things for your friends. But come on, Harry. This is not the same as just cooking dinner for us…"
"You needed a new phone, Cass." He states, with a sincere yet still stern tone. "How else was I going to talk to Cece?"
"It was only that back camera that was broken."
"Not just that. Your phone was like one thousand years old. You needed an upgrade." He exclaims with a smirk.
"Coming from the guy who doesn't even use emojis." She jokingly scoffs, drawing out a loud laugh from the man on the other side of her screen.
"Fair enough." He simply replies, being followed by a poking out of his tongue. "Does it work, though? Do you like it?"
Cassidy blinks her eyes as if in disbelief at herself, truly realizing that she has only questioned his generosity, despite ringing to express her gratitude. But also disbelief due to his apparent insecurity about the gesture. Not only does he want to do this for her, but he also wants to make sure she's happy with it, and it's fully taken care of.
"It's great, Harry. Truly. Thank you so much." She responds, a warmth traveling up her neck. "The camera on this one is really good! I've taken so many photos of Cece already!"
Harry's expression brightens at her answer and the heat creeps further up to her face. It's the fact that he helped her, and her thankfulness, that are creating this reaction. As much as she's working on accepting all of this, it's still all new to them.
"You'll have to send me some." He mutters.
"Sure."
A silence falls upon them for a moment, a bit of flickering of their gazes from each person.
"So… do you have anything planned for the day?" Cassidy asks.
She notices him play with his bottom lip, and a more serious expression rapidly displaying across his face.
"Harry…?"
"Umm… yeah, I've got a meeting." He quietly states, and Cassidy senses a sadness in his tone. "Bit worried that I won't be able to tour this year…"
"Oh shit." Cassidy instantly feels her heart hurt for him. She's always known how much he loves that part of his job, and to potentially not be able to do it must be painting him more than he is showing. "I'm so sorry. I know how much touring means to you."
"It's not-..." He sighs, his fingers combing through his hair more than once. "It's not even about me. It's all the people who buy tickets… and flights… and hotel rooms to come see me. It's not fair to them."
Cassidy stays silent as she watches his gaze drop down in a preemptive defeat. She knows there is nothing she can really say to ease his worries. But he's there for her, and she'll be there for him. And if that means sitting in silence on the other end of a video call, that's what she will do. She'll be there for her friend.
•••
She doesn't know if she's ever been more grateful to have a new phone. With the new nationwide, and seemingly worldwide, lockdowns now in place due to the coronavirus, Cassidy has never felt more alone. Besides Cecelia, but there's only so much she can talk about with a 3 year old.
Needless to say, she has already used her phone more than ever before, especially for video chats with her friends. Particularly Harry. Because it seems that not even miles of separation nor a pandemic can break the bond he and Cecelia share.
"I wan' say g'night to Harry…" Cecelia pouts, as she nuzzles into her bed and under her quilt. Her little hands lift up to rub her eyes, deceitfully reassuring Cassidy of her daughter's need for slumber.
"I know, Bug. But it's very late at night for him. He's sleeping."
"M'kay…" The little girl mumbles, the sadness so evident in her tone that it tugs at her mother's heart.
"How about we send him a message, yeah? So he can wake up to it in the morning."
Cecelia's eyes light up as much as possible with the heaviness of the day, and Cassidy props herself up against the headboard.
🗨️ Cassidy: sorry about this being so late… cece wanted to ring you before bed but i told her we would message you to say goodnight… so, goodnight from cece.
"Okay. I told him." Cassidy simply states, locking her screen as she looks down to her daughter, stroking the girl's long locks.
"I miss Harry."
Cassidy's eyes instantly widen at Cecelia's words. She knows the bond they have, but it still manages to catch her off guard at random moments. Not in a negative way, just in how tight that bond is.
"I know you do. He's your friend." Cassidy replies.
"He's my best friend!" She explains, even with her sweetly sleepy voice. "Well, you first. And Emily at school. Harry is after. But… don' say dat part!"
Cassidy can't help but chuckle.
"Okay." She smiles, giving Cecelia one final kiss on her forehead and moving towards the bedroom door. "I won't. Goodnight Bug."
"G'night Mummy. Love you." A little, relaxed sigh leaves her lips.
"I love you, too."
Cassidy closes the door and makes her way back to the living room. She plops down and grabs the remote, letting her body sink into the couch cushions. She smiles as a thought crosses her mind. Despite the horrible things happening in the world, and the chaos that quarantine creates, she still has things to be thankful for. Things that aren't seeming to be affected by any of that negativity. Those things bring her comfort, which is more than welcome these days.
•••
With the sound from a rerun of 'The Great British Bake-off' playing in the background, Cassidy scrolls mindlessly on her phone, attempting to wind down from the day. A sudden buzz causes the device to drop into her lap from surprise, and as she picks it up, she is even more shocked to see that the vibrations are due to a phone call from Harry.
"Good morning!" He states as soon as she answers, not even waiting for her to speak. "Oh. Wait… guess it should be more of a 'good evening' greeting for you…"
"Yes." She quickly pulls the phone back from her ear and checks the time. "It's 9pm here.
"Shit. I'm sorry. Were you asleep?" He asks, his voice going quiet, as if he isn't thousands of miles away in a different country.
"No, no. Just watching the telly." She replies, swearing she can hear his relieved exhale on the other end of the line. "What time is it there?"
"Umm… let me see… it's 5 in the morning."
"Since when do you get up that early?" Cassidy laughs, covering her mouth immediately in hopes that she didn't wake Cecelia. She skipped her nap and really needs her sleep.
There's a pause in the conversation, and Cassidy looks at her screen once again, checking if the call has disconnected, only to find that he is still on the line.
"I haven't been sleeping the best, to be honest. Lockdown has that all out of whack." He mumbles, and it squeezes her chest tight. Everyone has been out of sorts these days. Quarantine is hard on each person in their own way.
"Hey, it's your X-Factor audition anniversary today, isn't it?" She asks, hoping to take him out of the negativity she can tell that he is sitting in. Maybe a good memory will do the trick.
"Umm... yes, it is... how do you remember that?"
Cassidy unintentionally lets out another loud laugh, bending over at her waist at the amount of comedy behind Harry's question, and the certainty of her impending answer.
"Are you joking?" She asks, doing her best to regain control of her breathing, and stay quiet for the sleeping toddler in the other room. "I think that date is ingrained in my brain forever! You wouldn't shut up about it after Anne signed you up!"
[ flashback - March 2010 ]
For the past several years of her childhood, Cassidy has been subjected to Harry's increasing levels of annoyingness. However, today she feels as if he may have reached his peak.
If she hadn't already heard the news from Gemma herself, it wouldn't have taken long for the information of Harry's upcoming X-Factor audition to be brought to her attention. It felt as if the entire school knew within a matter of minutes.
"Hey, Cass!" Harry shouts out from behind her, causing her to internally cringe at the sound of her name coming from his mouth. It can't mean anything good, at least not for her. It never does.
She stops in her tracks and twists around to find the young lad jogging up to her with a wide grin stretching across his face.
"Did you hear?"
"Hear what?" She asks, playing dumb, though quickly realizing it just creates the opportunity for him to brag, and she internally scolds herself.
"I'm gonna be famous!" He exclaims, and the arrogant statement causes Cassidy to unintentionally scoff. "Hey…"
"You don't even know if you'll be on camera." She replies, knowing full well that the crew will inevitably be drawn to his irritating charm that everyone seems to fall for.
"So you did hear…" His grin widens. "I don't care. I get to sing!"
"You sing all the bloody time!" She reminds him.
"Right. Exactly. People seem to like it. So, I want to see if the judges do too."
"I don't like your singing." She blurts out, not meaning to let her annoyance with him get the best of her and her words. Especially considering the statement wasn't exactly true, though she'd never openly admit that to him.
"That's rubbish… you sing along any time White Eskimo plays..."
"That's because I like the actual songs."
"You can come along… if you want…"
"What?"
"To my audition. You can come along if you want. Robin, Mum, and Gemma will be there."
Cassidy opens her mouth to speak, but no words come out. Is he really inviting her? There's absolutely no reason for her to go, and definitely no reason for him to want her there. Unless it's to feed his growing ego. Maybe even use it as a way to 'prove' to his schoolmates that she 'loves' him, like he continues to lie about. The realization hits and manifests into a strong furrow of her brow.
"March 27th? I think I'll be busy that day."
"Marked it on your calendar already, did you?" His arrogant smirk immediately pulls his left dimple inward. "Might be the last time you get to see me…"
Cassidy cannot help the rolling of her eyes, even if the idea is quite shocking to think about. As her gaze focuses back on him, and sees his smug face, her desire to sass him back quickly reappears.
"Don't get my hopes up Harry."
[ present - March 2020 ]
"Hey, I was excited!" Harry exclaims, almost as if to verbally pout, as Cassidy chuckles at the memory.
"But I'm pretty sure you weren't supposed to tell anyone at that point. At least not the whole town!" Cassidy pulls her lips inward to hold back another loud laugh threatening to push out.
"I didn't ring you to be teased." He responds, a clear lightness to his tone.
"You should know better by now…" She teases again. "Why did you ring then?"
"I was told someone wanted to talk to me. But… I didn't realize what time it was for you."
Cassidy feels a little smile form with her mouth at the fact that he is so thoughtful to call Cecelia back, yet missing the slightly important detail of what time it is on the other side of the world.
"She just wanted to say goodnight to you."
"I miss that little one." He confesses, and she feels a warmth build up inside her chest. "I miss both of you, I suppose. When you aren't being a bully."
"First off…" Cassidy begins, letting out an amused exhale. "No, that's fair… but you're not missing anything. It's only been a couple of days since we've all talked."
"I'm aware. But I enjoy our chats. They're keeping me sane." Harry replies, and she can practically feel the sincerity to his statement.
"You don't feel sane?" She asks with a small laugh, though genuinely understanding his meaning.
"I just miss everyone. I miss home. Feels a bit lonely over here."
"Aren't you living with a bunch of people right now?"
"That's… yes. But that's not what I mean." He sighs, and she can hear a mild pain in his exhale. "Los Angeles isn't home. Not truly."
"Right. It will be nice to have you around again." Cassidy admits, sensing the mild desire to have had this be a video call, for the sake of displaying a reassuring expression to ease him.
"Did I just hear that correctly? You actually like having me around?"
"Shut up, you twit." Cassidy scolds with a chuckle. "But, it's honestly not the same without you here."
There's a silence that falls between, and Cassidy feels that light comfortability she is becoming accustomed to feeling when she dwells on the good things she still has to keep her going. These talks, and this friendship with Harry, are definitely one of them.
Her attention turns back to him as she hears the clearing of his throat, and she reverts back to being grateful that this call is not a video, as she senses a pink hue rushing to her cheeks.
"I just think that, when I'm finally home in London again, it'll feel like things are getting back to normal."
•••
[ present - June 2020 ]
As nice as it's been to work completely from home for the past few months, and spend more quality time with Cecelia, there is only a certain amount of sanity that someone can maintain while quarantining in general, let alone with an energetic toddler. So, Cassidy jumped at the chance to accept Anne's invite to her home, especially giving her daughter some freedom to go off and play while she chats face to face with another adult.
However, as she sits across from the woman who basically helped raise her, she can sense an awkward nervousness coming from Anne as she strums her fingers on the tea cup.
"I'm still sorry about Mother's Day being canceled." Anne expresses, slightly throwing Cassidy off that her anxiousness seems to be based off of the uncontrollable situation.
"It's not your fault. We went into lockdown!" She giggles, hoping her easy going demeanor helps to ease the unnecessary guilt Anne seems to be feeling.
"I know. It just would've been nice to have one last outing before everything shut down." Anne smiles, small but sweet.
Cassidy stays silent, gazing down to her beverage, the two seemingly understanding the nonverbal agreement. It hasn't been easy, for anyone, despite the rules of lockdown beginning to ease up. She's never been more grateful for open coffee shops and food delivery services, even if masks are required.
"Have you been out much now that we can, you know, go out a bit?" Anne asks.
Cassidy shakes her head slightly and she swallows her sip of tea.
"Haven't had much of a reason to go anywhere, besides the shops, for groceries."
"Oh." Cassidy hears the short reply.
As her eyes gaze back up to Anne, she is met with an unexpected expression, though one she had just been witnessing. The anxiousness has returned, or is still there, she isn't sure which one.
"Is… is there something else bothering you?"
"No, no. Not bothering…"
"But there is something." Cassidy replies, her eyebrow raising immediately.
"Well… it's just that, if you did want a reason to go out… there's this very nice guy, the son of a friend I have, and I thought-"
"Oh, so this was an ambush!" Cassidy states with amusement, but also a little frustration. She knows Anne means well, but she isn't even sure if she's ready for anything like a set up, and certainly wasn't expecting it to come from Anne.
"No, darling! No. I just… you're just a wonderful girl. And from what I know, he seems like a good guy. I just thought you two would have a nice time together…"
"I just don't know if I'm ready to date." Cassidy replies, the truth to her answer apparent to her in the way the thought of such a thing chaotically swirls around in her mind.
"Not ready? I can't even remember the last time you went on one! You definitely haven't since Cece was born!" Anne exclaims, snapping her mouth shut once the words come out, her features filled with regret. "I'm sorry. It's not my place."
"It's okay, Anne." Cassidy places her own hand over Anne's, waiting until their gazes meet.
"I just want you to be happy, CJ."
"I am happy." She reassures her.
"But you deserve to be loved. You deserve someone who absolutely adores you. Who, umm, who thinks the world of you, and never stops feeling that way. Who loves you through anything and everything life has and will put you through."
"Well, I have Cece…" Cassidy giggles, trying to divert the conversation to a more comfortable topic of discussion.
"You deserve someone who will love you both that way." Anne states, and Cassidy can see the emotion manifesting itself as tears form in the corners of her eyes. "I'm surprised you're still single, to be honest. But, if nobody… has tried… that's their loss. It's not as though you need it. A woman doesn't have to have a man to be happy. But, darling, you both deserve all the love in the world."
Anne's beautiful words and pure-hearted expression cause Cassidy's heart to melt. There isn't a sneaky or malicious bone in that woman's body, and she knows Anne is only doing it out of genuine love of her own.
"It doesn't have to be a commitment. Just a date. Or even just a… hang out of sorts." Anne adds, and Cassidy realizes she doesn't think she can reject Anne's offer. Or suggestion. Or whatever it is. She sighs, partially from gratitude but also defeat, and squeezes the hand she's holding.
"Alright." She agrees, watching as Anne tries to hide the way her face wants to light up.
"Alright?"
"I'll meet him." She concedes, every fiber of her body pricked with anxiety.
"Are you sure?" Anne asks, suddenly displaying more timidity than moments before.
Cassidy nods, mostly out of instinct. Anne has the best intentions, but bringing a guy into her life is not as simple as a casual 'hang out'. She has Cecelia. Not every man is open to being in a relationship with someone who already has a child. And Cassidy is more than a little cautious about who she brings into their dynamic. However, she knows that Anne is onto something. Even though she is perfectly content with it being her and Cecelia together, she can admit to herself that having someone else join their little unit wouldn't be the worst thing ever. As long as it's the right person. And she can't know if someone is the right person unless she gets to know them. So she might as well start somewhere, with someone. And if Anne knows this man, that's certainly not a bad place to begin.
•••
Derek is nice.
As planned by Anne, he and Cassidy first met up outside a small cafe, taking caution by social distancing from others, and enjoying the company together outdoors.
He is nice. Smart, successful, good looking, and seemingly uncomplicated.
The last part could be most important, considering that, as a single mother, her life can be the opposite at times.
Though, he seems to be very fond of her. He immediately made his intentions known that he won't see anyone else while they get to know each other. Again, uncomplicated. And any free moment she has, he wants to spend with her.
Which is why they are walking down the corridor to her flat, after he treated her to a very posh picnic in the park.
He guides her to the front door, a warm and strong palm placed on the small of her back, and stops behind her as they reach it.
She spins around, causing his hand to glide to her hip, and she swallows the lump in the throat that developed from the motion. It's been quite a long time since she's been touched like that, in that way.
"Thank you for today." She states quietly, some nerves seemingly getting the best of her.
"I'd like to do something with you tomorrow." He replies, a subtle squeeze of her hip accompanying his statement.
"Oh. I… I have some work to do, unfortunately." Her gaze drops out of unexpected shyness. It's not a lie, she does need to complete a few things, but she always finds herself in a daze after being with him. Dating feels new to her, all over again, and she always feels as if she needs to process their time together. Process the feelings.
His disappointed sigh is halted as the sound of the elevator rings out. They both turn their heads to see the doors open, and watch as Harry walks through them, his head down and his hands behind his back.
His pace slows as he gets halfway down, gazing up to meet the eyes of Cassidy, then shooting them over to the man beside her.
She looks over to Derek, whose expression matches that of her friend's.
"Harry? Harry Styles?"
"Yes…" Harry answers with hesitancy, and Cassidy concludes that he may be nervous about an awkward interaction with a fan.
"It's Derek. Derek Mills." He exclaims, raising his hand to his chest as if to provide visual proof of who he is. As if his identity should be obvious to the other man. "Holmes Chapel Comprehensive!"
Cassidy watches as Harry's eyes widen, flickering between her and the man he has now, apparently, been reintroduced to.
"Derek. Right. How's it going mate?" He asks, giving a blank stare and similarly neutral tone.
"It's going well. Yeah, I'm doing really, really well." Derek replies, giving a smile as his gaze moves to Cassidy before returning to her friend. Potentially his own old friend, though she can't quite be sure.
"Wonderful." Harry states, providing no emotion in his statement. He looks down to his hands after bringing them in front of him, showcasing a beautiful arrangement of flowers that she had somehow missed when the interaction began.
"I didn't realize you two knew each other. Especially considering, you know…" Derek points in Harry's direction. "He's famous."
"Oh, well-"
"We're good friends." Harry interjects. "We've known each other since we were kids."
An uncomfortable silence falls between the three of them, with only the jingling of Cassidy's keys sounding down the corridor.
"Those are nice." Derek states plainly, pointing to the bouquet, matching the tone he has been receiving thus far.
"Oh, right. I, umm, brought these over… for Cece." Harry replies, now keeping his gaze fixated on Cassidy. "Can I give them-"
"Oh." She responds quietly, suddenly feeling a tidal wave of tension filing the space around her. "She's having a little afternoon nap."
"Of course." Harry nods, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I should've remembered it was her nap time. I'm sorry."
"That's okay!" She instantly responds. She waves her finger between herself and the other man beside her. "We were just… saying goodbye. So I can take them inside."
She turns to Derek, being met with pure confusion. Not that it wasn't clear he wasn't being invited inside. That's something Cassidy put a boundary on as soon as he asked to see her again after that first date. So the confusion is most likely regarding this uncomfortable interaction between the three of them.
He gives Cassidy a nod and a quick kiss on her cheek.
"Message me tonight." He states, turning away from her and moving closer to Harry. "Nice to see you again, Harry."
"You too." He utters in reply, not giving the man much acknowledgement as he walks closer to Cassidy, and Derek walks further away.
Harry looks back at the now empty hall, and turns around to meet her stare.
"I didn't know you were… dating anyone…" He states softly, with a familiar timidity that she hasn't heard in a while.
"We've been on a few dates. Nothing too serious right now." She shrugs, rummaging through the bag she has hanging from her shoulder.
"Right. Well, that's… nice..."
"What's with the tone?" She asks, a sternness beginning to attach to her own tone. What reason can he have to be snarky with her?
"I'm a bit surprised that you didn't tell me about this."
As much as Cassidy was just questioning his current, negative demeanor, she didn't expect a real answer. Certainly not that answer.
"I didn't realize it's something you would even want to know…"
"I'm your friend! Of course I want-... I mean… we talked a lot while I was away. Seems like this would be something that came up in conversation…"
She studies his face, watching with uncertainty as he expresses the same sentiment.
"Your mum only introduced us a couple of weeks ago and-"
"My mum set this up?" Harry's eyes widen, just enough for Cassidy to pick up on the movement of his features.
"Yeah…" She replies, still sensing a sliver of the snarky tone he had used moments before. "She thinks I'm not happy. Or… wants me to be happier, at least. She wants me to have more love in my life."
"Love?" Harry immediately straightens his posture and his eyes widen with, what looks like, a curious shock.
"Well, god, one step at a time please…"
"So, do you like him?" He utters, a volume that almost caused Cassidy to miss his question.
"I suppose so." She shrugs. Her answer would truthfully be that she does, but that suddenly feels as if it would be a troublesome response to give at this moment.
"You suppose so?"
"He's a nice guy."
"Did you even know him in school?" He asks, passive aggressively at best.
"No… he was in the year ahead of mine. What's that got to do with-"
"I just don't remember him being a nice guy."
"In school? Harry, that was ages ago." She chuckles, trying to ignore the once familiar frustration making itself known. "I don't particularly remember you being at your best back then either."
"Yes, but that's-... it's just that, I-" He stutters, swallowing harshly and running his fingers through his hair as he clears his throat. "You're right. I wasn't."
"And look at you now. Bloody hell, look at us both now! I hang out with the biggest pop star in the world!" Cassidy exclaims, delighting in the comedic truth to the statement, even if it's not the real heart of their reconciliation. "But, moreso, I'm your friend. We are friends. People change, Harry."
"True." He utters in response. "I just… I'm looking out for you."
"I appreciate it. But you don't need to worry about me, I can handle myself." She smiles, standing up straighter to further display her confidence. "I'd like to think I have a good judge of character."
Harry opens his mouth, but quickly closes it, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand.
"So… did you only come over to bring Cece some flowers?" Cassidy gives a small smile, still feeling an odd, mild tension in the air, but hoping the change of subject eases it away.
"Well, no. Since I just got back into town, I was going to invite you both over to my place." He returns her smile with one of his own, but the attempt still doesn't give her the reassurance she needs. "But since Cece's asleep, maybe another day then."
"Sure! Tomorrow?"
He hands over the bouquet and brings one hand up to fiddle with his lower lip, crossing the other around his waist, and furrowing his brow in thought.
"Yes. Tomorrow afternoon will work just fine."
Harry gives her a slight nod, along with a matching smile, and turns back to walk down the corridor. Cassidy watches as he gets back on the lift, his expression still seeming to be one of deep concentration on whatever his mind is dwelling on, and she begins to feel an uneasiness in her chest that she wasn't expecting to materialize between the two of them.
[ flashback - July 2014 ]
Dragged to yet another One Direction concert in London. That's where Cassidy finds herself with Gemma. It's annoying, at this point, that she so easily caves to her best friend's request of joining her, when she never wants to attend any of their shows. Not fully anyway.
And this time is worse, because Gemma managed to convince Cassidy to hang out backstage before the show, rather than after when she can use exhaustion as an excuse to get out of there quickly.
"So, what's new?" Niall asks her, scooting closer to her as they both lean against one of the dressing room walls.
"Not much really." She shrugs, considering the fact that her life is nowhere near as exciting as the one they lead.
"She's being modest." She hears coming from her right, feeling her friend nudge her with an elbow as Gemma walks up beside her. "She's finishing up at uni and then doing an internship for a place in Manchester!"
"That's amazing, Cassidy!" Niall exclaims, giving her a cheeky wink.
She simply shrugs, still highly aware of the company this news is being given to, knowing that this megastar's reaction is out of politeness.
"And she started seeing someone…" Gemma adds, causing Cassidy to shoot a strong, scolding glare in that direction.
"You're dating? Who are you dating?" A voice asks, and Cassidy turns her gaze to see Harry walking over from the other side of Niall, leaning one shoulder against the wall with his arms crossed over his body.
Who does he think he is to assume he has the right to even know the details of the new relationship she is in?
"You don't know him." She growls through her teeth.
"I might…"
"You don't."
She watches Harry look over to his sister, and out of the corner of her eye, sees the confirmation Gemma gives him. As if Cassidy's answer wasn't enough, or wasn't the truth. As if he knew better than to take her word for it. That arrogant prick.
"Does he know you know me?" His annoyingly famous smirk immediately appears after his words come out.
"Why would I tell him that?"
"Just don't want him to get jealous." He states, tapping Niall on the shoulder, obviously looking for someone to agree with his comedic statement, but only, and thankfully for Cassidy, receiving a shake of Niall's head.
"There's nothing to be jealous of."
[ present - June 2020 ]
The sound of chopping can instantly be heard as Cassidy and Cecelia enter through the front doors to Harry's house.
"In here!" They hear coming from the kitchen, and as they turn the corner, Cassidy is met with the view of Harry busying himself around the room.
"Can I go ou'side?" Cecelia asks, looking between her mother and their host.
"Of course!" Harry immediately exclaims, not bothering to check with Cassidy, even though her answer would be the same. She smiles at the comfort and normality of it all now, and realizes that it may never cease to cause her heart to fill up with so many good feelings. Happiness qand gratitude being the main emotions. "I could use your help picking some pretty flowers to put on the center of my dining table…"
The little girl's eyes light up, nodding at the suggestion and skipping her way outside.
"What have you got going on over here?" Cassidy asks as she turns back to Harry and moves into the kitchen, finding different foods sprawled out across the counter.
"Just… a small charcuterie selection…" He replies, laying cheese slices on the middle of the board.
"You didn't hav-... it looks delicious, Harry!" She states. Clearly she is still learning to accept his generous gestures, though that is one thing she may never get used to. She has spent so many years having to do anything and everything herself, that it is still doesn't feel entirely normal for her to have someone else do something for her.
"I have some wine over there if you'd like to pour yourself a glass." He gestures behind him, not taking his focus away from the food in front of him.
Cassidy walks over to the opposite counter of where he stands, picking up the one bottle he has pulled from his collection, and reading over the very intricate label.
"Are you sure you want to open this one? It looks pretty fancy."
"It's just a bottle of red wine, Cass."
"It's a 1982. That's older than me! And it says 'rouge'… I consider that pretty fancy. But then again, I'm not the famous Harry Styles. I usually just go for the cheap Zinfandel or a pink Moscato." Cassidy giggles, looking up from the bottle in her hand to find Harry lacking the amusement that she herself is finding in her statement.
"Oh I'm aware." He replies, rolling his eyes in a very sarcastic nature.
"But maybe this pinot will wash away your 'grumpy old man' mood…"
Harry's gaze shoots up from his task, displaying wide eyes, as if he hadn't been clueless of his previous, serious expression, or the sourness in his tone. Although, she is almost positive that he knows.
"What?"
Cassidy scoffs out a laugh and shakes her head, choosing to move past his clear pout over her beverage commentary.
"Nothing. I just think you should save this one for another time. A better occasion."
He shrugs. Simply shrugs, and arranges the final few strawberries with the other fruits, as Cassidy finds a less extravagant wine for the both of them to consume. One that is more relatable to her more normal lifestyle.
"Shall we?" He asks, nodding in the direction of beautiful back doors, leading out to an even more beautiful backyard.
Cassidy grabs the glasses and they exit, each finding a comfortable spot on his patio furniture, both close enough to the outside table and within reach of the lovely food spread he has created.
"So, catch me up. What's… what's new in your life?" Harry asks, taking his glass and then a sip of wine, seemingly hiding his expectant expression, though failing to keep it from Cassidy.
"Well, considering we saw each other yesterday…" She giggles mildy. "Nothing."
"Right." He scoffs within a chuckle of his own. "But it wasn't much of a conversation, and I have been away…"
"We also talked multiple times a week, you pest. Besides not actually being around, and considering we couldn't do much anyway, you didn't miss anything."
"Don't know, it feels like I did." He mumbles. "With… with everyone."
Her gaze flickers over to him, noticing the way he has begun to run his teeth along his bottom lip, staring out to the backyard view.
"I bet it feels good to finally be back home then, yeah?"
"It does. Yes." He utters in response, a quietness that feels a little surprising to Cassidy, considering how desperate he seemed to leave Los Angeles and return to London. "I won't be able to settle in too much though."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I'm… I'm actually headed to Italy soon."
"That sounds amazing! How soon?"
"Umm…" He runs his fingers through his hair and his gaze drops as he swirls the beverage around in his glass. "I'm leaving next week."
"Next week?" She exclaims, turning to face him completely. "Wow. I feel like you just got back home."
"I know." He softly states, giving nothing more than that simple response.
"What are you going for?" She feels her brow furrow slightly, the expression caused by the confusion she feels throughout herself. However, she lightens her features, even if just to ease her own mind. "Finding even more pretentious wine?"
"Of course." He replies with a simple smile, very unlike his usual grin, or smirk. "And, umm, I guess to also figure out what I want to do next. Maybe write a song or two, if inspiration strikes."
"And you can't do that here? At home?"
"I need a clear head. Free from distractions."
The confusion grows and a worry begins to build alongside it, though she isn't quite sure why. He's a grown man. He can do whatever and go wherever he wants to, it doesn't affect or involve her in any way. Except that, to an extent, it does.
She looks over to Cecelia, who is completely comfortable at Harry's home, and completely content digging around in the garden outside.
Her gaze quickly shoots down to her fingers as they begin to fidget with the stem of her wine glass, then slowly moves back over to him.
A realization falls over her. She's a bit sad. For Cecelia, who just got her best friend back, but also for herself. She just got her friend back too. Her other best friend. Now he's headed off again, and another realization hits her. Their lives are so different. As much as she sees him as the Harry she knew as a kid, he is not just that. And for the first time since they became friends, she worries that it could change things. Change what they now have.
"Right." She utters, still caught up in her thoughts. "Free from distractions."

Can I request a Tamaki Suoh x reader?? Reader finds out her parents are getting divorced, and Tamaki finds out. Reader cries while Tamaki offers support and such. Love your account and writing!!
Of Knights and Princesses (Tamaki Suoh x Reader)
𝗔/𝗡: 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼!! 𝗶 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆!!
𝙒𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚? ⇒ 𝙈𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩
𝙟𝙤𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙧?
𝙗𝙪𝙮 𝙢𝙚 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙚?
You always loved the Host Club’s garden parties. They reminded you of tea time with your parents back home. But now there is something else lingering on your mind. Something that clouds your sunny day outside. Something that makes all the joy and the laughter around you sound so far away. Something that keeps you from hiding your frown.
“Princess?”
You look up.
It’s just enough time to see your favorite host, Tamaki sliding onto the white garden bench and sitting by your side. You offer up a smile- something light and pleasant and perfectly crafted when you need to keep up appearances. But the blonde right by you doesn’t seem to buy it one bit. No- his frown is too deep and his eyebrows furrow like he’s concerned. The princely aurora he always carries around him is nowhere to be seen. Instead, it’s replaced by something a little more human. A little more quiet and sad and relatable. But most of all, it serves to you as a reminder.
A reminder that things change. A reminder that nothing last forever. Not even princely, perfect boys who never seem to falter. Not even a picture-perfect family that swore to stay together despite every fight. Not even that.
“Tamaki!” You cheer, the same little mask you put on for all your friends and classmates and teachers slipping on in an instant. You lift the teacup from your lap with shaky hands, hoping he wouldn’t notice how the completely full cup almost spills a droplet or two onto your uniform as you place it down on a nearby side table. By the time you fold your hands in your lap and turn back to face him, you have to try very very hard to pretend you didn’t notice how his frown deepens and the concerned look on his face grows ever so slightly. It doesn’t work at all. “It’s nice to see you! I heard you were very busy today so it’s quite a surprise to see you.”
But you keep trying anyways.
For a second he doesn’t speak. He just looks at you- like he’s lost in thought and unable to escape. Just yet at least. It’s unnerving seeing a boy you constantly fawn over showing you his undivided attention in such a foreign way. If it were any other day, you don’t think your heart would have been able to handle such a situation. The moment feels like something you could have only dreamed of. Being alone in a beautiful garden with a handsome boy worrying over you. Showing a side of himself that he keeps away from other girls. All in an effort to address your worries and your fears. Sad eyes without a flirtatious line to follow. Thoughtful silences. And a space between the bench you both share that feels too small. Even if he’s refusing to touch you just yet.
But then he opens his mouth. And he speaks. And he reminds you why this moment would be your greatest dream any other day. But your greatest nightmare as it happens today.
“I’m never too busy to help a princess in need of saving.” He tells you earnestly. Too earnestly. Like he meant every word as his purple eyes brim the type of unspoken understanding you didn’t think you’d ever receive in a place like this. Like if you trusted him- he would really do what he told you he would do. Help you. Save you. Help you. Save you. You take your last breath before the fall. “...also, I heard about your parents.”
But you aren’t even able to pull your gaze away from his fully before you crack.
A tear slips out and rolls against your cheek before you can even take your first breath of new air. The air of acceptance that it’s really happening. That what you’ve been hiding away is about to step out into the light all on its own and sing for the very first time. And as that quiet gasp of yours breaks through, the first tear splashes on top of your hands as they ball into bunched-up fists full of fabric. That first tear is then joined by a little brother, rolling off of your other cheek. And then quickly comes an older sister. And then a mother. And a father. All the aunts and uncles and cousins alike come rushing in as the tears start flowing faster. And soon enough, you’re sobbing into your hands- catching the extended family of tears that flow from your eyes as all you do is cry, cry, cry.
You feel embarrassed. You feel ashamed. You spent your whole life being the perfect daughter in the perfect family. Your parents didn’t have to ever worry about you. You were strong enough to be who you are. You were smart enough to know your lefts from your rights. You were wise enough to know that screaming matches between Mommy and Daddy were best kept as secrets from anyone but yourself and the staff. Yet here you are- blubbering like a little tiny girl. Hating the harsh reality you knew was coming and will now have to face forever. Hating the beautiful moment you share with this boy that will pass by in a second. Because you can’t help but feel it’s tainted by your parent’s changing marital status. Tainted by their lawyers and their drafted contracts over assets and items. Tainted by the talks about what you’d prefer regarding custody. Tainted by your tears. Tainted by a lot of things.
And yet this nightmare?
“There, there…it’s okay…”
It turns into a dream. All because of one simple thing.
“...Cry as much as you need. I’ll keep you safe.”
Him.
“Tamaki…” Your call of his name barely slips out of your throat. All the syllables are shaky as your throat tightens. All the letters quiver as he reaches for your hands and pulls them away from your face. And his entire name spills from your mouth once more as he pulls you into his arms and circles his arms around your waist. Your head falls into his shoulder. His hair tickles your skin. Your arms latch onto his shoulders. You hold him. And you hold him tight. Because all of the walls for protection. All of the masks for privacy. They’re falling off. Tumbling away. And that makes you scared. Of what people will say. Of what people will do. Of what people will know. “W-what if…w-what if someone s-sees you here and-”
“It’s okay, princess.”
You cry harder.
You cry harder into the fabric of his blazer. He smells like flowers. You wonder what type of flowers. You wonder if you smell like tea. But all your wonderings and musings don’t stop the sobs and stuttered apologies that fall out like an endless waterfall. And your sputtered words and salty tears do little to keep Tamaki from squeezing you tighter. Holding you closer. As if the space in the bench between the two of you was too large for him to not conquer. As if the pain in your heart was too much for him to not ignore.
Because you both know that deep down, you truly did need saving. Just for today. Just for a moment. Just for as long as your tears could do nothing but fall. And a little after that too. But luckily…just luckily…
“Let’s just focus on you for a moment, okay?”
There was a certain blonde-haired prince in the garden, ready to play knight in shining armor just for you.

The Midnight Snack Shack
In a shocking turn of events, I’m positing something on here before AO3… largely because I meant to write at least one other thing before this but oh well???? It’s fanfic, I can be a hedonist!
So let’s just consider it a Scriptfrin Saga Sneak Peak!
The gang are at Bambouch, and Mirabelle commits the sin of arriving late for dinner. There are no leftovers. As punishment for this offense, Siffrin does a little trolling on the way to seek out a restaurant.
Anyways, no real content warnings that I can think of, though tell me if you think I should tag one. That said, there are Spoilers for In Stars and Time. Please finish that before reading this! Also, while not necessarily required, this is technically part of a series.
Enjoy~
.
It’d been a wonderful day in Bambouch! Bonnie had (understandably) wanted some alone time with their sister, so that left everyone to wander about and do their own things. Mirabelle had had a lovely time talking to some of the other house maidens in the local house of change. One of them had taught her about this thing called surfing! She wasn’t very good at it yet, but it was still exciting! Even if being in the ocean was kind of scary? It was so big…
It wasn’t until the sun started to dip below the horizon that she realized how long she’d been out. Oh no oh no oh no! She had to get back to the others! What if she missed dinner?!
As she ran back, her worst fears were confirmed. She sprinted to Nile’s house only to see everyone cleaning up dishes…
“Crab- were there, um, leftovers?” she said, righting her bow upon on her head and trying to brush the salt off of her and suddenly very aware of the fact that she was dripping on the floor.
“No…” Bonnie said. “I thought you went to a restaurant or something. I mean, I always make some extra…”
“Buuuut I ended up wrestling some other dudes on the beach and worked up a huge appetite,” Isabeau said, flexing one of his arms.
“He is very good at it,” Sif purred, wiggling their eyebrows and putting a hand on Isa’s bicep.
Isabeau’s face darkened as he made a tea kettle sound. Huh, weird. Why would he get embarrassed about being good at wrestling? She could only assume it was a weird romance thing, but was wrestling romantic??? She hadn’t seen anyone propose via wrestling in her books (not that those were realistic), but…
Oh whatever. Boys will be boys.
“Well, that’s alright. I’ll figure something out, if that’s okay?” Mirabelle said. They had to have something lying around, right? If not, missing dinner wasn’t pleasant, but it wasn’t the worst thing that had happened to her. There might still be workarounds though! She could ask the neighbors or maybe the local house, maybe go fishing? She’d never fished in the ocean before, but it couldn’t be that different from fishing in a river, right?
(If she wasn’t quite so deep in thought, maybe she would’ve caught some of the sneaky smirks shared between her friends).
“Actually, I think I heard someone say that one of the restaurants here should still be open,” Siffrin said.
“Oh yeah! Is that still a thing, Nille?” Bonnie said.
“Unless it closed today, should be,” Nille said. “Think about eight thirty is when they change the locks.”
Mirabelle looked at the clock. It was around eight now, so that still gave her time! But it was getting pretty dark…
“Perfect. I think I remember where it is,” Siffrin said. “I’ll take you! Maybe I’ll get some dessert too~”
… she had no idea how to say nicely that she would prefer anyone but Siffrin to do so right now. She loved him deeply, but he had the memory of a goldfish sometimes. It was kind of concerning, actually??? She looked to the others in a desperate, silent plea for help, but apparently the exact opposite message got through.
“Great idea. You have the best night vision of all of us, after all,” Odile said.
“Yeah! And he’s, like, really great at finding stuff!” Isabeau added.
“I trust him completely to remember what I said before dinner,” Bonnie said with a grin. “No more telling needed!”
“Can you tell me anyways?” Mirabelle squeaked. Oh Change, please help her. As usual, her deity did absolutely nothing of note as Siffrin led her out the door.
“So… are you sure you know where you’re going?” Mirabelle said.
“Absolutely! I always remember everything.” He held his head high as he led the way.
“… not that I’m doubting you, but I think. This is. The way I came from?” The buildings looked familiar, and while she was not typically the navigator, she was pretty sure the setting sun being on the opposite side of her meant she was just heading backwards.
“And?”
“Siffrin, that’s the way to the ocean!”
“Yeah,” Siffrin said, not even missing a step.
Maybe this could still make sense? “Is the, um, the restaurant on the pier then?”
“Nope.”
…
“Siffrin. Why are we going to the ocean.”
“Thought you might want your clothes.“
Oh. Right, she was still wearing swim clothes! In her haste, she’d forgotten. How sweet of Siffrin- wait. “Siffrin, I-I mean, that’s very nice, so thank you! But we don’t have time! I’ll pay extra I’m sure they’ll forgive me dripping a little!” She’d chosen a one-piece that covered her well enough and even had a pretty skirt-thing, so it’s not like she was being indecent! “Besides, my clothes are at the house… I didn’t get changed on the sand in front of everyone…”
“Oh. Should we go there instead?”
Mirabelle’s eye twitched a little. “Siffrin! Restaurant!”
“Hehe, okay, okay.”
Hopefully that would be the end of it.
———
That was not the end of it. She loved Siffrin, she did. A lot of the time on their quest, his tendency to pick up random objects and inspect everything was useful! Vital even! And while a slight problem at times outside of questing, it was still endearing. But did he have to do that now? Sure, they hadn’t had any real sense of urgency in months, and she doubts he kept on his toes and rushed through every loop (she hopes he didn’t, that sounded exhausting), but she hadn’t realized you needed practice in it! Because why else would he be! So! STUBBORN!
“Hey look, this rock looks like a seashell!”
“Siffrin, that IS a seashell!” There were a million seashells! They were near the seashore!
“Oh. That makes sense!”
She was going to get… what did Odile call it? An ulcer. She was going to get an ulcer.
It didn’t help that people kept staring. One might think Mirabelle would be used to it by now, but this seemed more than usual??? The feeling of being watched put chills down her spine. The occasional whispering didn’t help either, but it was hard to hear over the occasional chatter.
Siffrin took a right and then stopped, turning to her, “Do you think anyone sells seashells?”
“Um, no? We’re by the seashore!”
“I think Odile could.”
“Even she can’t sell seashells by the she- um, sea sore- shore- SIFFRIN THIS IS NOT WHAT WE NEED TO BE DOING RIGHT NOW!”
Siffrin laughed and looked up at who knows what. “Oh, huh. It’s almost dark! We should get going.”
“Yes. Yes we should. Thank you, Siffrin.”
He decided to leisurely walk to wherever they were trying to go up until they got close enough to see someone by the door with her keys.
“NOOOOOOO!” Mirabelle moaned, running over. “Are you closed?! Were we too late? Oh please oh please tell me you have a few leftovers! I’ll pay extra!”
The person—a heavyset sort with skin a few shades lighter than Bonnie’s—gave her a sympathetic smile. “Sorry sweetie. No leftovers, I’m afraid.”
Her stomach chose then to grumble and she sunk dramatically to her knees.
The person locked eyes with Siffrin, both grinning, and chuckled, “We’re only just opening, a little early to have any leftovers!”
What.
Siffrin burst into laughter beside her. “Your face!”
WHAT?!
“Siffrin! Did you know?! Did you do did this on purpose?!”
“Mm hmm~!”
“Stars, you got her good, didn’tcha?” The woman said.
“SIFFRIN YOU- YOU…” she took a deep breath and LET IT ALL LOOSE, “YOU CRAB!”
“GAAAAAASP! BELLE SAID CRAB?!?!”
Mirabelle’s head snapped around. There, around the street corner, was…
“Bonnie?!”
“CRAB! GUYS! SHE SAW ME!”
“Aaaaand you just gave away everyone else,” Odile said as she also stepped out from the shadows. “A pretty good tailing session, I would say, but try not to be a sellout.”
“Oops,” Bonnie said.
“MADAME YOU’RE HERE TOO?!” Mirabelle said.
Siffrin was leaning against the wall he was laughing so hard. And the mystery person didn’t look much better.
“In my defense, I intended to see this supposed ‘Night Market’ with my own eyes,” Odile said. “Any amusement I got from watching you and Siffrin was simply an added bonus.”
Mirabelle stared into her soul, but Madame’s poker face remained as good as ever. “You knew.”
“Yes,” Odile said. “And I’m not going to be the only one to go down with this ship. Bonnie’s already sold us out. Show yourselves.”
Nille, Isabeau, and two strangers stepped from the shadows.
Mirabelle’s eye twitched. “HOW?! WHY?! WHY ARE YOU HERE AND HOW DID WE PICK UP MORE PEOPLE?!”
Nille held her hands up defensively, “I wasn’t letting Bonnie go out at night alone.”
“I wanted to feel included,” Isabeau said (and honestly that was so adorably earnest she couldn’t even be mad at him for it).
“Also, people saw us following you and called the defenders,” Bonnie said.
“Hi. That’s us!” One of the apparent defenders said. “So… you do actually know these people and are not passing charges on a group of stalkers?”
The other had become a few shades lighter. “Dude. I’m pretty sure these are the saviors.”
“What?”
To add further salt to the wound, someone else had come from inside the restaurant—a cook, presumably—and was surveying them all with a raised eyebrow and a chuckle. “Oh, they got you good good.”
“I think Sif’s dying,” Isabeau said jokingly.
Their rogue was on the ground absolutely wheezing, laughing so hard sound had stopped coming out.
“Death by laughter…” Odile said. “A new one, I take it?”
Siffrin made a hand gesture Mirabelle did not recognize at Odile, but did not stop.
Mira stared down at him. “Siffrin. You are my friend, and I love you. That’s why I’m giving you a three second head start to run.” She drew her rapier. “Three…”
That was apparently enough to make Siffrin hop up and start running, though he was still laughing so much he might as well have been drunk.
“Two…”
Almost immediately, he managed to trip on a rock and do an impressive cartwheel only to then hit a wall and scramble back up.
“One~!”
“DISTRACTION!!!” Bonnie shouted, tackling her.
“Oh! Bonnie! You wanted gotten too?” Mira said, smiling sweetly (knowing good and well she would never hurt them, or Sif for that matter, all in good fun!).
“CRAB!” Bonnie jumped off like she was a hot pan. “SCATTER! SHE CAN’T CATCH EVERYONE!!!”
The next few minutes were spent in the world’s most disorganized game of chase with the poor, baffled defenders trying to explain to passers by that it was just the saviors pranking each other which did somehow less than nothing to dissuade anyone from watching.
But eventually Mirabelle had to concede, leaning against the wall to catch her breath and, “Pfffff, hahahaha!”
“You laughed, so I’m off the hook~!” Siffrin said.
Mirabelle rolled her eyes, but was smiling. “Yes, yes. Okay, I’ll admit it, that was funny.” She stood up and brushed the dirt off the swim wear the best she could. “A little mean, but funny.”
The group congregated and laughed together. Siffrin in particular was absolutely beaming (it felt nice to see, more than worth it, even).
“Sorry,” Siffrin said, “But what can I say? I’m a professional little stinker!” They snickered. “Besides, it’s tradition to mess with unwary tourists!”
“Especially Vaugaurdians,” the person from before—the one who’d been at the door—said.
“Mm hmm! And tip well too,” Siffrin said. “I used to wait around the docks and do the same trick to people coming off the boats. Mom ‘officially’ told me to stop, buuuuut she’d sneak me some extra snacks when I lured them to the shop.”
Odile scribbled something down in her notebook, and Isabeau’s eyebrows went up…
But Mirabelle could only gasp. “Siffrin lore?! And! Using your mischief? For profit?! For shame!”
“What. I, um, you know I’m not getting paid for this, right Mira? I only just met… hmm. Sorry, pronouns?” They said to the person.
… what? Hmm. Well, it wasn’t the first time Siffrin forgot what he was talking about as they said it, though still concerning…
“I’m not picky, but eh, been leaning towards she/her lately,” the woman said. “Name’s Vivian, but Viv’s fine. Now then, weren’t you hungry, sugar? Let’s get you something nice and fresh. And hey, your friends can come too if they’d like! Honestly, that was enough of a laugh that I think you’ve earned yourself a discount. Oh, and being the saviors and all too.” She chuckled and waved them inside.
Siffrin was the first in.
————
And that’s it, hope you enjoyed! This originally was just supposed to be a small set up to introduce Vivian, but as you can see, it got wildly out of hand and now Mirabelle is living a comedy sketch. This was so fun to write.

Sunset Died - Sword/Hatch
The Wedding(-Crasher) (Part 2)
The cake was indeed something special on this day. It was not very sweet, but had a pleasant taste of berries. Emma had boiled them down a while ago and used them for today's occasion. “Really good. I think that's the best today.” Pauline looked over at her plate and grinned, “as quickly as you ate your piece, I think so too, hnhn”.
While Cyclone and Blair's wedding reception is in full swing, someone elsewhere is frantically making their way to get help. “Shit, why did it have to start now, I thought we still had time…”. Cries of pain could be heard far away.
The atmosphere at the party was quite relaxed. Someone had switched on their smartphone and played a playlist. It was a colorful mix, including some slow tracks. You had to take advantage of that. “I've been practicing a bit more"/ ”really? Well then show me if you've become a good dancer, hnhn”.
As Boyd's wife was still busy with the cake, he asked Emma for a short dance. He wanted to use the moment to thank her for taking such good care of his daughter during this difficult time. “Thank you, but it was a matter of course for me to look after her. She's like a sister to me"/ ‘hnhn, that makes me happy’.
Let loose and enjoy the rest of the day. That was actually the plan. Pauline said goodbye and went home, while Xander had to finish the dance with Morgana. It was a nice get-together - until the peace and quiet was interrupted.
A few moments later. Nick Alto stormed with quick steps towards the barn where the party was taking place. He knew there was an event here today, but he had to find a place where there were a lot of people. “My God, Mr. Alto, what…"/ ”Is Dr. Wolff here? I need to see her urgently!”
And at the same time, the commotion began when some of the guests saw him. “What are you doing here, huh? You don't show your face for ages and then…”, but Nick immediately defended himself. “I don't have time to explain right now, I need Dr. Wolff!"/ ‘I'm here…’. Morgana came running out of the background and saw that he was quite out of breath. “What happened?”.
Susan was surprised and annoyed at the same time. “That he's showing up here today, of all days, at our daughter's wedding"/ ‘Well, it seems to be something important… Look at him, he's a mess, what's going on there?’. Morgana supported Nick for a moment until he could catch his breath. “Now tell me, what happened?"/ ‘He should tell us why first…’/ ”Quiet, damn it!”...
After the confusion of everyone's chatter died down, Nick continued, panting slightly. “I know everything is getting out of hand here at the moment, but I need your help now, Dr. … Vita, she's gone into labor, too early actually, and she's in tremendous pain, please, help us!” / ‘What??’.
“Your wife… is pregnant?”. Everyone in the room was visibly surprised and also a little shocked. No one had noticed anything yet. How could they, she hadn't been out for months. “I… I know you must all have lots of questions and I'll answer them eventually, but please… Something's not right…”. Morgan's head was foggy for a moment, but then the doctor in her came out. “I'm coming…”.
Even the bride and groom had not expected such an event on this day. “Phew. That was a very surprising wedding crasher“/”indeed. Did any of you notice anything? That Vita is pregnant?"/ ‘No. I haven't seen her once since we got back here’/ ”I wonder why she's been keeping her pregnancy a secret all this time? She might be older, but that's no reason to hide."/ Blair shook his head. “Anyway, the party's over. Let's go home.”

Writing/Art Update 11.26.2024
I did not finish chapter 9/52 and there's no way I'm gonna today, so I'm just gonna go ahead and call this week. I certainly worked on it. My current workflow is that I have a document called "temp", and I put the current chapter and all its mess in there, and when it's done, I paste it into the "rough draft" document, put any scrap I want to save into the scrapheap at the bottom of my "notes" document, and then start clean with the next chapter. Right now, the temp doc is over 3k words, but I've really been flailing with what to do with this chapter, so it's three-quarters of fight scene and a bunch of half abandoned scraps of conversation and now Ichigo and Renji are expositing at each other and I'm about ready to throw the whole thing in a dumpster. Anyway, I'm not going to count any of that as progress for this week; it'll get counted when the chapter is finished, which is my goal for next week.
That doesn't mean no progress, tho! Earlier in the week I wrote a 2k Inuzuri vignette, just because I was thinking about it and wanted to write it. It was so pleasant and fun to write and people have been very nice to me about it, and honestly, it's got me fucked up a little, because writing is so rarely like that for me these days. I've had this fear, roughly since I started writing Bleach fanfic in 2019, that I was going to eventually run out of ideas, at which point I guess I assumed I would just quit or something? I don't know. What has happened instead is that, when the random bolts of inspiration began to get farther and fewer between, I've learned to create story concepts and to craft them into a finished product. And, like, that's a cool skill! I am proud of my ability to do it! But it's also, like, work, like a fucking job. And the result is that I spend a lot of time writing things I want to be written, and very little time writing things I actually want to write. I used to at least have parts of my stories that I was looking forward to writing, and that's not even really true anymore. Sometimes I happen to have fun while I am writing things, but looking out ahead pretty much just feels like a slog. I've known that this was happening for quite some time, and I've tried various things to fix it and none of them have helped. I can't stop, though, because the only thing I really want to do is read fanfic, and the amount that is being written to my tastes and interests is a very small fraction of my appetite for it, so my only recourse is to write it myself. Anyway, at least I had fun for two days this week! That's something!
I did some art tutorials this week, and I think at this point I am putting off drawing my Christmas card in hopes that I will run out of time and then have an excuse not to do it at all. 🙃
Sorry to be kind of a bummer this week. I'm also wrapped up in holiday off-my-schedule anxiety, so I've had a headache+ low grade nausea for the last three days, which I pretty much expect to persist through the entire month of December.
GOAL PROGRESS: This week, +1979 words, which gives me 14,150/20,000 = 71% of my year-end goal, with 5 weeks to go.

White Wedding
Aincrad had it’s fair share of gorgeous days, but today was a perfect day for relaxing and taking a break. The sun fell in the all right spots, gentle clouds making for lovely shade, and the gentlest breeze kept everything at a perfect temperature.
Kirito decided that they would take Asuna, Yui and Strea out today. They hadn’t been on a family trip with Asuna and Yui in a long time, and hadn’t at all since making the discovery that Strea was Yui’s long lost sister, and their newly adopted daughter. “Today would be a good day to make memories with them all.” Kirito tapped on the door of the room Asuna and Yui were staying in, inviting them out and telling them about their idea.
“Oh Kirito that sounds wonderful! And Strea will be so happy to get to spend time with all of us!” Asuna perked up, thinking about a lovely picnic date with Kirito, now alongside her two lovely children.
“I get to play with big sis Strea? And mommy and daddy? That sounds perfect!” Yui was practically buzzing with excitement, and Kirito scooped her up in their arms and led her to their shoulders to carry her in a piggyback.
“Now all we need to do is get Strea too.”
…
Before long, the group made it’s way down to the base of the inn where Agil had set up his new bar. The rest of the party seemed to have been gathered to have breakfast together already.
“Yo everyone, it’s a nice day so we should take it easy. I’m gonna be taking Asuna and the girls for a day down at the lake, so you guys have fun when I’m gone.”
“Ah it’s never any fun when you’re gone Kii-bou, who else are me and Liz spost ta tease?” Argo joked at Kirito, but he was busy trying to stifle a laugh that ‘The Rat’ was currently nibbling on cheese for breakfast.
“I hope you all have fun!” Silica warmly smiled at the party.
“Yeah this weather is pleasant, it is definitely a perfect day for it.” Sinon didn’t tease Kirito surprisingly, just being genuine.
“Yeah, I hope it’ll stay this nice all day. This one here still hasn’t had a day out with us all yet.” Kirito tussled Strea’s hair, with her letting out a pleased purr as a response.
The girls shifted in their seats slightly, and Sinon spoke up for them “Um, Kirito- is that really appropriate?”
“Huh?”
“Like, it’s one thing with Yui, but Strea is like. Barely younger than you and Asuna, are you sure you should be petting her like that?”
Kirito tilted his head confused at the question. “I… I don’t see why it wouldn’t be okay. Back in the real world Leafa and I would mess with eachother’s hair like that all the time.” He strolled over to his little sister and tussled her hair, eliciting a bright blush on Leafa.
“J-jeez big bro. It’s been years since you’ve done that…”
“Eh, gotta make up for lost time now that you’re here with us. Anyways, we’re headin’ out, laters.”
…
The party of four excused themselves as the rest of the guild sang them a chorus of goodbyes, and as soon as they were out of earshot, all eyes were on Leafa.
“So… Leafa… Wanna explain what you and Kirito just said?” Philia rested her head on one hand and pointed her fork accusingly at Leafa.
“Yeah, we knew Kirito was protective of you but…” Liz shifted her eyes away, feeling awkward.
“No wonda you always look so annoyed when A-chan’s around. You and Kii-bou were up ta some funky business in the real world huh? I betcha you did plenty-a lewd things to his body while he was unconscious huh?”
“J-JESUS ARGO- Don’t accuse me of stuff like that- It’s not like that at all”
“But it is strange. Kirito does seem to be very affectionate with you.” Sinon’s face was a mask of uninterested seriousness, but inside her mind wandered to dirty places, and a dark game she played with two characters who looked suspiciously like Kirito and Leafa.
“I’m his sister. Of course we’re affectionate. We’ve spent years together alone since mom and dad were always busy.”
“Leafa, honey, you’re digging yourself a grave here.” Liz cringed.
Silica shot up and clasped her hands over her mouth, struck by realization. “Kirito once comforted me by playing with my hair, and just a bit before that, he said I reminded him of you Leafa.”
“Jeez, girl musta sprung up a few cup sizes while he was away if you reminded him of her” Philia taunted Silica who pouted, hiding her chest.
“His best memories of me are probably from when we were younger. We haven’t always been the most well off family, so up until we were around 12 and 13, he and I shared a room. Around the time we got our own spaces, we kinda drifted apart from eachother.”
“Aw now I feel bad for teasing.” Philia patted Leafa on the shoulder apologetically.
“I don’t- I bet ya shared a bed too didn’t ya?” Liz was beaming a smirk.
Leafa’s silence was deafening.
“Oh. Oh my god.” Sinon pinched the bridge of her nose, exasperated.
“I… I was so used to it that for a long time after I still slept in Kirito’s bed… And any time I had a nightmare…” Leafa clutched the Moon Pendant around her neck, thinking of her recent quest to reunite the Sun and Moon Lovers with Kirito.
“Oh my god she’s in love with her brother-” Philia’s eyes went wide.
“Would it help if I said he was adopted?…”
“Given Kirito’s track record, it makes sense. That’s like what, 7 girls that’ve fallen for him? Why would she be immune?” Liz slumped into her chair.
“Even more competition…” Silica rested her head on the table pouting.
“Hmm. It’s a little weird, but it’s also sweet. You loved him so much you willingly dove into a death game to see him.” Sinon’s kind voice reassured Leafa.
Argo facepalmed.
“Dammit dammit dammit- you’ve screwed us all.”
The group of girls looked at Argo in confused.
“Dontcha all get it? This gal’s been flirtin with Kii-bou since they were born. And we know he was a loner- He doesn’t think that we’re flirtin- he just thinks all gals act like that because of Leafa-”
“Oh-” Liz and Philia blurted out.
“Leafa…” Silica looked up at Leafa with tears at the edges of her eyes.
“We’re doomed.” Sinon rested her head in her hands.“Ehehehe- whoopsie…” Leafa could only look down in shame, with a crimson blush across her face.
