ahhaha since we're all ranting about how much we're failures. Lemme join in. I just feel so awful in every aspect my life has been slowly detoriating. I basically hat emyself, though the hat eis not as bad as it was before (I thouhg I was better at least but it turns out i'm still subtly suicidal, just that when i feel better my mind forces me to forget that ever happened so I literally didn't even know until I looked at some notes I wrote), my life certainly is. (keep in mind there's one guy that is extempt to some of this) I keep distancing myself from my friends, I don't have people I regularly contact, I grow tired of texting people and just close myself off. I don't tel other irl people my issues, further scaring them away. I haven't been exercising for 4 months. I don't have any particular skills I cna boast of (or maybe I do, but I wouldn't anyway because who needs to tell people what they like). I haven't done anything all summer further detoriating my position. Every single interactionw ith my family I come out of being tired, and I'm always annoyed with them. I sleep 9-11 hours and yet it's not enough. I have basically all Fs in my classes because I distract myself and procrastinate on my homework because I don't have any motivation and supplement that time with useless entertainement. I'm not resposible with anything. And i'm tired just so tired. I was gonna say something else so i'll keep gong until i get it again. oh yeah-- and i am just so, so slow on everything. i'm gonna fail my grade and cry myself to sleep everynight because i can't get into college. And I barely do anything to beign wiht, just useless emotional nonsense I'm cutting myself off now. Cold turkey gonna do my hw this week, 7 days, then I'll be back. I know no one on tumblr cares, or will hold me accountable. I might go on discord (but i’ll time myself), tumblr if i need to vent (no liking, scrolling, or reblogging), and whatsapp, and instagram for just messaging (NO VIEWING STORIES AND it’s timed). And i’ll probably use spotify and YT for music but i’ll try to controla and limit that.  responding quickly or not at all; not checking servers on discord except for designnated times; NO watching videos on YT/tiktok or whatever; no scrolling twitter

so today i decided to sit down and answer a whole bunch of questions on discord!

this DOES contain spoilers up through the end of ch5, just a warning! if you’re on mobile i’m so sorry.

Who is your favorite character?

THAT IS THE MEANEST QUESTION YOU COULD EVER ASK DID YOU KNOW THIS. This varies a lot depending on the day but usually... tied Chiyo/Tatsumaru. I love them both so much. I think Ryouji's my favorite to write, though. If ASLH were someone else's story, I think my favorite would undeniably be Chiyo, because I'm nearly always biased towards protagonists.

What’s been the most enjoyable part of the story process? Why?

Honestly? Getting to see how people react to it. It's the validation luv. Maybe it's selfish, but I really do like seeing how people are affected by my work LOL.

For the trials of aslh, which trial has been your favorite so far? In terms of planning the case itself, plot beats, character developments, anything really. But which one still makes you lose it when you think about it.

That's a tough one, I don't like writing trials. I liked the structure of ch3, though. The way that the trial stops being "who killed Amal" and instead becomes "who is Aster". The Tatsu POV. The story title drop. And the way the execution just wrecks everything, immediately? Yeah, vibes.

I also feel like ch4's trial deserves a special mention because of how I wrote it while I was sick with the flu, and yet if you ask me that was still probably the most emotionally intense trial- wait I forgot ch2- and ch5- y'know what, forget it. At least it's on par!

If you could change anything about aslh on any level, what would it be & why?

In general, I think it needed more planning. I'm a very on-the-fly planner and writer, but there were a lot of unknowns I didn't consider until late-game that made it hard to bring up and resolve cleanly. It could also probably have used a little bit more clarity with regards to the lore - things like "how does the memory replacement work" weren't decided until super late in the project. I didn't have a backstory for Tatsu until I wrote ch2 or ch3, so before that point their scars were much less extensive and I think they were cut-shaped instead of burns? That was kind of important for at least continuity's sake, and it irks me.

Also, Hirono deserved better. I didn't plan out her arc as extensively as the others (she was, pre-story, the last survivor to be locked and she had traded with Kanemori), so she sort of stagnated in the story. Which wasn't a bad thing, because not everyone's going to get shoved off a balcony or watch their friend get shot, but it kind of sucks that the most "defining" moment she had was that Ririka and Iris died, neither of which she actually witnessed, or the name confession in ch4 trial which kind of got brushed over. Like all the rest of the survivors have Big Defining Moments, except her.

To be honest, ASLH is the first huge writing project I've ever completed, so there's a lot of things I could have done better. But it was also the first huge writing project I've ever completed, so I'm cutting myself some slack there.

What's your philosophy, or even your strategy when it comes to character design? What do you go for first or emphasize, where do you think you could experiment more?

Most of my designs are based around a core "ooh I want to try this thing". Sometimes I take character inspirations, sometimes it's a cool garment, sometimes I'm just redesigning characters. I mostly emphasize clothing, patterns, and colors, but I also reuse a lot of the same clothing styles and patterns. I could definitely experiment more with shape language and silhouette - usually, that's like the last thing I think about, but one of the more important things to have in an ensemble cast. Mostly, though, I just like drawing clothes.

What do you think is the crowning moment of aslh? Like if someone asked you what would be a moment that gets to the heart of the story the most. What would it be?

DEFINITELY the ch5 execution. Like, the emotional resonance? The narration shift? The drama of it all? Peak ASLHcore.

what factored most into your decision-making progress? why did you decide this death order and this mastermind(s)?

My decision making process is entirely me sitting in a fugue state mumbling out details that I need to fix and then sporadically sitting bolt upright and screaming a parallel or tangent I've pieced together.

The mastermind question is easier to put together - I'd always had in mind that this was going to be a revenge game, and that one mastermind was so difficult to take seriously it wasn't even funny and that the other decided to bail halfway through. So I built the characters around that. The points I usually pay attention to with fangan planning (these days) are: ch1 is to establish the status quo and tone of the story, ch3 is to overturn the status quo, and ch5 forces ch6 to happen. So the ch3 case revolved around Sen dying, and then I was like "how can I fuck up the status quo more" and killed Amal and Aster too.

The biggest factor in my decision making process is "what would be really cool". I tend to make a lot of decisions that fuck up the structure of what a fangan "should" be because I think it goes hard as hell when we throw out rules that the characters are unaware of anyway.

was there a draft of aslh that looks drastically different from what we ended up with?

Great question, and fuck you for reminding me!

ASLH actually started as a bullet point fangan called What Tempestuous Despair. It was a much more international cast until I was like "fangans are supposed to be mostly Japanese casts!" and changed a bunch of characters' nationalities, which in hindsight was dumb. Ririka, Kanemori, Tsukino, and Iris were victims of this. Also Amal was the protagonist and I am SO GLAD that didn't stick they are SO DIFFICULT to write the POV from.

I've spoken on a few occasions about how the cast itself changed, and I never got around to plotting out arcs (other than "Amal learns to trust people and allows themself to truly grieve Rin after holding everyone at length for so long"), but some assorted things:

The cast had a bunch of characters who were swapped out. Included in this tally are Rin Matsumoto (whose personality was recycled into Hisaichi, Ryouji's cousin, and their name was recycled into Shuichi's school friend), Leon Mercury Kahahawai (who’s in CYAH), Haywire Asturias, Puck Ganka (who’s also in CYAH), a few characters/designs who I ended up giving away... And also Hayato Kikuchi.

Iris was always a killer, because I really wanted her to have a downfall-that-wasn't-a-downfall-but-rather-a-reflection-of-the-true-self arc. This was always a lategame case so I'd have time to establish her as terrible. Originally, she killed Leon.

Tiana was also always a killer. I think he killed Hayato via electrocution, so as you can tell that's always been around in some form or another.

(Tristan killing Chiyo in ch5 in the current version, btw, was specifically to mirror Tiana's murder. While Tiana killed to get themself out of the KG, Tristan killed to get everyone else out.)

who was considered for mastermind throughout making aslh? what would their reasons have been?

The masterminds have never changed, except that the characters for them didn't exist back in WTD. But the personalities of the characters they replaced were about 1:1 anyway, so yeah basically they've never changed.

what is one thing you really loved about the beta and what is one thing you really hated about the beta

One thing I really loved about the beta was the ch3 case (which I've spoken about at length before), but other than that... honestly Tiana? Tiana's the one character that I had fully developed as of WTD, they just sprung into my head completely materialized. Their entire personality and design somehow stayed the same since conceptualization.

One thing I really hated? I would say "all of it", but specifically, we don't talk about white Tristan. That was so bad. I was trying so hard to design him so that he'd look nonthreatening and I was like "why is this so hard" and then I changed his ethnicity and I was like "oh right, white gamer boy characters just have cursed energies" and moved on with my life.

what would be an ideal day for tiana murdock. what would make them happy.

An ideal day is honestly one where they get a lot done. They're not one to relax or know what to do with free time, but they get a lot of satisfaction out of being productive, so if they manage to finish a lot of work and not end up exhausted? They're happy. They've probably gotta work on learning to enjoy their free time. They do like traveling, though, and- oh my god I should make them friends with Tsukino.

What would the cast's careers be if they lived to be adults?

Chiyo: Elementary school teacher and scifi author! Really wish I'd leaned more into the fact that she loves scifi, honestly. Amal: Journalist, probably, except they'd actually take classes in it this time instead of just writing op-eds constantly Tatsumaru: LIBRARIAN TATSU TRUE ENDING!!! Sentarou: Freelance pianist/composer. I have this whole headverse where he and Alexei are somehow friends with Claude, and together they plot to kill Enji Sekisada. Or Claude and Alexei plot to kill Enji and Sen sits there with his head in his hands. Iris: In universes where she's able to reconcile with academia, she works in ecology + chemistry. In universes where she doesn't, she's a florist. Aster: SERIOUSLY depends on the AU because every time I try to put Aster in a normal AU they're different. Jokes about becoming a flight attendant to travel with Tsukino. Claude: Secretary. No, seriously. May have something to do with killing Enji Sekisada. Hirono: Photojournalist! Photography reminds her of Ekuko. :') Alexei: Veterinary assistant for a specialized bird clinic Tsukino: Pilot, obviously Brendan: Mechanical engineer but sometime around age 30 has enough stress to just quit and become a college professor instead. Tiana: Museum docent, he's coworkers with Laurent Sinclair thanks Ryouji: He's... not sure. In normal AUs does take up food service for a while before getting uncomfortable with his family and quitting. In ASLH canon, he skips this step and goes into law with the intent of helping other killing game survivors sort out their lives. Tristan: Web designer, still makes a few games on the side with his friends. Mostly point and clicks because he ain't about this life Kanemori: Volleyball coach, because he knows a lot more about that than soccer honestly

what part of aslh was the hardest to write?

Deadly life. Always. I can crank the chapters out really fast, but I hate the case part of fangans and they're painful to plan.

For each case, what is your out of universe reason for wanting each person to die when? Like not counting the motives or anything, but why you wanted each person to die then?

- Brendan: He was the OC I had the longest. He had to die. Goodbye you little shit. - Kanemori: He was actually a survivor originally, and Hirono was the ch1 killer for the same "OC longevity" reason but then I realized I don't have anything for Kanemori to do. So... Sorry dude.

- Claude: Y'all ever notice how no one... EVER... puts plot relevant information in ch2s? Anyway. - Tiana: As discussed, they've always been a killer. Putting them as a killer here was a good balance - far enough from ch1 to build up their relationship with Tristan, but also not so far into the story that it conflicts with the general endgame fall-apart-ness.

- Amal, Sentarou, Aster: This case sprung into my head entirely materialized. Like, this was the one that BUILT the story, so it didn't change much. Mostly I just thought it'd be narratively fun to kill off the deuteragonist, the mastermind, AND the ??? in one go. I didn't plan for Chiyal to be a thing so when that became a thing this chapter got better/worse.

- Iris: I always wanted her to be a killer to really expose that "she's not a good person" stuff (she was more of a snake in WTD), but she didn't become a victim until when I was actually writing. She was supposed to have a trial and then I got sick of writing her. Whoops. - Ririka: I had arc ideas for everyone else, and it could have gone either way between Ryouji and Ririka getting that "close to my best friend who is now dead"... in the end it went down to gender balance in survivors. At the time it was Ryouji or Ririka + Kanemori + Tsukino + Tatsumaru, but then once Kanemori got swapped to Hirono just... yeahhh Ririka got stuck in ch4. Sorry. - Alexei: Special shoutout, he was supposed to die in ch4 as just an "oh no this is what happened, how sad" but then it was super narratively unsatisfying and now he's alive.

- Chiyo: For the sake of pain. But like, poignant, meaningful pain. I don't believe in making plot decisions just because they hurt, they've also got to mean something. Considering that a major theme of the story is "death before its time is a complete tragedy", and Chiyo's motifs include death... uh. Yeah... yeah. When it came time to ask myself who'd die in ch5 for this motive, well. I miss Chiyo. - Tristan: Meant to mirror Tiana's killing in ch2, as stated above, had the "selfish kill vs selfless kill" thing. Look if you're going to have a duo in a fangan and don't get to make cool dichotomy/theming what's the POINT. Ended up surviving because when there were only four survivors, there were... really no stakes for the ch6 trial.

- Tatsumaru: I just wanted them to be alive. I didn't know WHY, exactly... I just knew I needed them to live. So. I guess they're alive? Also I thought it'd be really interesting to have a killer protagonist, and a remorseful killer protagonist. - Ryouji: To be honest I didn't have a solid arc for him, aside from Ririka's death I'd decided I was going to figure it out as I went. And I guess I did? I love him. And not gonna lie, since Tatsu became the protagonist and Ryouji's still pissed at them, the perspective/dynamic became VERY INTERESTING. - Tsukino: Originally in beta!ASLH, her schtick was "gilded exterior with a heart of jerk with a hidden, smaller heart of gold" but that didn't transfer over to ASLH itself. Then when I realized "oh shit Tsukino wants to be a hero" it was all over. At first her arc was very "tone yourself down and stop rushing into things" which wasn't... ideal, I think you can still be enthusiastic and upbeat while being mindful and that was not how I had gone about it lol. Fun fact, Tsukino's survived every draft of ASLH, including the beta one - I think she and Amal were closer friends in that. - Hirono: See Kanemori, I just thought she had more survivor potential than him. The problem was that by the time I made the decision to swap them, everyone else was sort of locked by necessity, so Hirono became a survivor by default. Again, I didn't quite have an idea of what she was going to do other than get leeched off of by Iris. Ririka wasn't even part of it, we just had that cooking thing in 2-3 and Ririka was like "this is my problem now" and I was like "what?" so now we're here.

What's everyone's coffee/tea/other preferences?

What was the hardest decision to make, writing wise, for aslh? Like you wanted the story to go one way, but you couldn't force it, or a scene you felt you needed but was difficult to decide upon, anything like that?

Hm... okay see the thing is I'm generally pretty good at writing on the fly so if I make decisions I CAN force them to happen, so there's really not too much that comes to mind. Mostly this happens with trials - I make outlines for my trials and drag my cast along with it. Except they tend to go off-topic, and then I have to drag them back on topic. And sometimes the points don't make sense when you go out of order so I have to ad lib stuff. Ch4 trial was the most off-script one, it was supposed to be a lot slower and made more sense but then the cast just went out of order and I was bonking my head against the wall trying to get it to make sense.

The only real thing I had consistent difficulty with is locations. I did not fucking plan any of this shit and hate making maps so much- oh my god I need to do the ch6 map still.

BnHA Chapter 207: Close Encounters of the 4th Set

Previously on BnHA: Honenuki, Tetsutetsu, Todoroki and Iida were all put out of commission in one fell swoop. Seeing as Sen and Ojiro were already captured, this left the fate of teams A and B riding on Shouji and Pony’s respective shoulders. Although Pony succeeded in keeping her fallen teammates out of Shouji’s hands, she wasn’t able to get Shouto over to the Rat Principal Jail before time ran out. As a result the battle ended in a draw, which means that the classes are still tied with one win each. Over in Recovery Girl’s office, Iida and Todoroki took turns blaming themselves, but in the end the two of them renewed their determination to become heroes who put everyone at ease and rush to the rescue of anyone who needs it. Also they’re now best friends with Honenuki. Meanwhile back at Ground Gamma, the fourth set is finally about to begin, Tokage from class B is looking to kick some ass, and my son Kacchan is eager to start showing off for his excited green boyfriend. I am hyped.

Today on BnHA: Team BakuJirouSeroSatou takes on Team TokaBondoAwaKama as round 4 begins. We briefly check in with the audience, where Vlad King is being loudly biased toward 1-B and All Might is being quietly biased toward 1-A. We then cut to Team A who are obediently following Bakugou’s lead despite some obligatory grumbling on their behalf. Bakugou wants to go straight in for the kill, and the strategy is for him to take point while the others hold the rear and Jirou keeps her earjacks peeled for trouble. Trouble does indeed find them before long, as Tokage attacks with her self-amputation quirk, which allows her to split her body up into small pieces that can float around independently to do recon and harass people and so forth. Anyway, so while she’s out there pestering Bakugou, Bondo shows up and uses his “can spit out glue everywhere” quirk to trap the others. Bakugou blasts them free with an explosion, but it leaves them exposed, and Kamakiri from B Team leaps in to attack Jirou with his “can make swords from any part of his body” quirk. Or at least he tries. But before he can actually hit Jirou, Bakugou jumps in to save her. Because didn’t you know? The best heroes are the ones who both win and rescue, and we love character development here in BnHA.

in all honesty watching Bakugou’s leadership in action is always fascinating to me. because it works in defiance of all expectations. everyone’s always complaining about what an asshole he is, but they can also see that he pushes himself just as hard as anyone else. he’s tough, but he’s also fair. he won’t ask anything of someone that he wouldn’t also ask of himself. and because his classmates understand that, they’re willing to follow him

so here they are all grumbling about his attitude, and yet they’re going along with it all the same

lmao Bakugou you really have set the bar for cooperation quite low. good job on tempering those expectations kid

so now we’re flashing back to their planning session

that’s not much of a plan Katsuki. WHY ARE ALL OF MY SONS SO STUPID. hopefully his improved self-awareness will kick in and he’ll listen if the others make suggestions

(ETA: I’m sorry kiddo, I underestimated you. it was a simple plan, but effective. “go out and kick their asses and watch each other’s backs.” but what really made it work is the fact that he took point and they let him coordinate them. that’s something all of the other A Teams lacked aside from Momo’s team, and she unfortunately got cut off from the others. basically, the lesson to take away here is that good leadership can make all the difference in a situation like this.)

also interesting to see the hierarchy at work here lol. so these guys are “underlings” and “punks”, but meanwhile the enemy are “small fries.” not even deserving of more acknowledgement than that, huh

I know Bakugou has never been the type to sit and wait, and he thrives on improvisation almost as much as Deku when it comes to strategy. but I do feel like if they had taken the time to make a plan to set up some sort of trap, it could have been really good

on the other hand, their team is powerful enough to make “attack head-on” a valid strategy as well. or so it would seem. but we all saw how that worked out in the previous match, though. so far pretty much every class A team has underestimated class B, and that’s proven to be a mistake

anyways I guess we’ll see!

and now it looks like he’s spotted someone up ahead, and he’s calling for the others to hold up

Bakugo, Midoriya, and Todoroki with an s/o with an Italian dialect!

Todoroki first then~

•When you first showed up in class and spoke at first. You’d introduced yourself in Italian the first time. When Aizawa tapped you; and you swore he’d chuckled, you realized immediately what you’d done and corrected yourself in slower Japanese. You had to think pretty hard on the words at first. Now the rest of the class did laugh a bit but what surprised you is when, just out of curiosity Todoroki had approached you and asked if you could teach him a bit of your language. Which is how it all starts.

•During the USJ attack you’d called out “Ocio!” and stood protectively in front of your friends and Shoto, just because when stressed you auto switched back to Italian. Thankfully you’d been teaching Shoto and he translates for you, telling them you’d said not to let their guards down. Thankfully the situation, while it had escalated terrifyingly, was defused thanks to All Might. It’s shortly after this that Shoto asks you out, realizing he wanted to spend more time with you and he had been scared for your safety when you two had been separated.

•He sounds like a robot sometimes but when you slip up and start talking in Italian he patiently listens, as he’d been taking your lessons seriously and had been doing a language program to keep up with you. By this time everyone in 1-A knows when you say “guaglio” you’re saying hello to them. Phrases you regularly drop they’ve started to learn what they mean. Your Japanese has gotten much better too; thanks to Shoto’s help, and sometimes you find yourself thinking in Japanese more than Italian.

•Shoto tells you how proud he is of you when you go an entire week without slipping up. Your accent is still there, making it sometimes difficult to understand your Japanese but you’re doing great and your boyfriend is so proud of you! It makes you blush but that just makes Shoto hug you tight and snuggle you, he loves your blush and finds it really adorable!

Whoo! Bakugo~

•You’d been at UA for awhile and hadn’t really talked much, you’d stumbled over your introduction eventually cursing in Italian angrily. Only for a second but you straightened your face coughing a bit. Which made Bakugo curious as to why you’d seemed…surprised. He writes down the way the word sounds and looks it up later that day. In his room he suddenly bursts into laughter spooking his mom who peeks in on him and asks what’s up, “There’s a new student old hag. They’ve got a temper it seems and it’s pretty great.”

•The next day Bakugo bugs you about it and you snap at him with your heavy accent, which just makes Bakugo laugh harder and…being the type of person he is says you sound like a moron and oh boy do the slew of curses come out then. You two don’t get into a fist fight but the verbal fencing match makes Aizawa send you both to the principal. You both get a very long lecture after school and when you walk out of the office you both just start laughing about it.

•It’s shortly after the dorms are implemented that you two hanging out becomes really regular and you’ll always start just fucking with each other. You tease him sometimes with words he doesn’t know, and it drives him crazy every time. He never asks you to teach him though, he’ll absorb the words and look them up later. It’s not until the next day he yells at you about it, the super delayed reaction making you die of laughter.

•It’s during one of these laughing fits that he suddenly grabs you by the shoulders and yells “Listen giggly, you’re too fucking cute stop that shit or I’m going to steal a kiss and that should fucking shut you up!” The sudden…threat? startles you into blushing and he just laughs for a moment before getting serious again. “No but seriously, wanna go out with me?” You’d already been acting like a couple honestly, and rumors had already started but now it could be official, you agreed quite easily grinning.

Izuku last but not least~

•Your accent is obvious right away, and Izuku, being the friendly soul he is, introduced himself to you asking where you’re from. You’re a bit quiet and talk slowly to answer him. He’s immediately interested in you and it takes absolutely no time for you to fall into the group of Iida, Ochaco, and Izuku. It isn’t until much later you realize that they’re all dating and it’s why they’re always spending time together. Unusual as it is you’d transferred to UA after the dorms were implemented.

•Izuku is masterful at splitting his attention between you, Iida, and Ochaco, which is surprising to you and you idly wonder why he’s spending as much time with you as he does with his partners. He’s super sweet whenever you slip up and accidentally say something in Italian, asking what you’d said and then writing it down next to a silly drawing of you in your hero costume and an insane amount of notes on your quirk, you, your weaknesses, and information he keeps for his analysis, seriously if you didn’t know better you’d guess super analysis was his quirk.

•During one Sunday Izuku and his partners ask you if you want to go to an amusement park with them, you agree easily enough and let them know you’ll pay for your own ticket, “No need!” Says Iida waving his hand in the air, “This is a little gift on me for the three of you!” Which makes you blink, you grab your money anyway so you can feed yourself and go with them. It’s a ton of fun, but they’re weirdly splitting up their time, you spend no less than 3 hours alone with each of them, Izuku being the last one, and as it’s getting kinda late you all go to ride the ferris wheel one more time.

•Once in the car with them you notice a change in the air around you, and while you’re sitting at the top…Izuku suddenly says “Uscirai con noi?” Which makes you go red in the face that first of all he’d gone out of his way to at least learn this phrase in Italian, translated was “Will you go out with us?” You laugh and smile rather brightly when you answer with ‘sì’ quite happily which makes all three of them laugh and sigh with relief they’d been really nervous about asking you! Still you tell them it was fun and you loved spending time with them but hadn’t expected to be asked out by them. It’s good though and you’re happy.

92nd Class - Manaharu Market! #1: Ayanagi Shou, Snow Troupe

Hello, GRAPH readers~ 🌟 This is Snow Troupe's Mana Haruto. Starting this month and lasting the rest of the year, I'll be hosting a column by and for members of the 92nd class!! I'm going to do my best to present the appeals of the 92nd class members, who are full of unique qualities - I hope you will discover even a little more about them!

The column title? I swiped the title of a TV show and made 'Manaharu Market'...as you've probably guessed already, I really like that show*! Thank you so much to the lady in the editorial department who made this awesome design!

OK! If I don't write something this will never get started!

So, the guest for this historic first column is...Ayanagi Shou, from my own Snow Troupe ✨ Ya~y 😃 Ya~y 😃 Her nichname is 'Shou'! Just like her stage name~ Easy to remember!

When it was decided I would be writing this column...

Shou: 'Hey, make sure you write a lot of good stuff, 'kay?' She said that re~ally pushily...I wonder how that turned out!? Hahaha...

As for the photoshoot theme for this column, we got really excited talking about that when we went on a troupe vacation recently. We settled on a parody of a school story - Shou-kun became a delinquent kid, and I'm a shy student**. The two of us were so thrilled to have our photos taken in the old-fashioned school uniforms 📸

Both: 'How about this pose!? Oh! That's so cool~ ✨'

We kept praising ourselves through the whole photoshoot. Everyone, what do you think of naughty student Shou-kun in her uniform!?

When we were discussing the costume options...

Mana: 'Since there aren't many opportunities like this, what would you think of dressing up as Sento-kun***? He's really popular.'

Shou: 'No... I don't think I could pull that off...'

Mana: '...I guess not 😅'

Sorry about that, Shou-kun.

But, I wanted to show everyone anyway, so I drew it! ✨ Please use your powers of imagination to turn this into reality ✨

The start of Shou-kun's Takarazuka life

One of her seniors at the ballet troupe she studied with since she was little became a member of Takarazuka, and going to see her in a show was Shou-kun's initial motivation. She thought 'I want to join too!' and so took the entrance exam...and passed!

My first impression of Shou-kun when she joined TMS was 'a cute Kansai kid with big bright eyes!' She was actually shorter than she is now, so I thought of her as a petite 'little sister' figure 💖 But then she kept growing, and before I knew it she became such a handsome otokoyaku 😲

Shou: 'I guess I had my growth spurt while I was in TMS 😃'

She wasn't the type to get in trouble as a yokasei (!?) and what really stands out to me is that one time she made onigiri at home and brought them for everyone to eat 🍙 (Whoa! What a good person!)

As she kept growing (LOL, I said it again), we made it to graduation. Then, we were assigned to Snow Troupe ⛄️ At the beginning, we didn't end up in many scenes together. Recently we're finally acting and dancing together 😃

Shou: 'Since we're classmates we can get really honest advice from each other, right ✨ '

Mana: 'Adlib scenes are so fun~ (!?)'

We always improvise the adlibs off-the-cuff, so they change every time... It's a nervous feeling but in a good way, and we have tons of fun with it 😃

Shou-kun is basically re~ally diligent at heart. She's always thinking about her roles, so it seems that her characters are never out of her head...however, normally she speaks in intense Kansai dialect and is quick with banter. This has resulted in some slip-ups...

For example, the Romeo et Juliette shinjin kouen. Shou-kun played Mercutio, of the Montague house. In the scene 'Duel' everyone's emotions are at their highest, and as the title says its a duel scene where Mercutio's fury against the Capulets boils over 🌋 Shou-kun shouted at Rinjou Kira-kun, who was playing Tybalt.

Shou: 'Yo, c'mon~!!! (yelling)'

...Huh!? What!? Did she say 'Yo, c'mon'!? Kansai dialect!? M-m-mercutio!!?? After that, the more we thought about it, the funnier it got, so none of us could forget it ⚡️

Shou: ‘I just shouted without thinking  😅 I was surprised too~'

Whenever us classmates remember that incident we just crack up. Though we know exactly how it all went...we still laugh uproariously. That's the result of Shou-kun and her character becoming united! (That was our final interpretation~)

Shou: 'You'd never really get a chance to shout 'Yo, c'mon!' on stage (laughs)' (That's very true!)

But there's one thing Shou-kun struggles with...

Blackouts! When the lights go out suddenly for a scene transition, it's called a blackout. In the stage rehearsals of Beyond the Blaze, she delivered her final lines looking really cool in her white costume - then, blackout!! When the lights went up the next moment, we saw someone in a white costume lying on the stage. Huh!? Shou-kun 😅??

Apparently, she couldn't tell which way it was to where she had to exit into the wings and tripped. I could hardly believe it was the same person who had been so cool up until just moments ago - I knew I shouldn't laugh but...I laughed 😃 Then, she burst out laughing too!! To prevent any further accidents, our classmate Momohana Hina-chan would stand in the wings and clap her hands, and Shou-kun would exit to where she heard the sound, holding both hands out in front of her - although it was quite a primitive method, it got her through the whole run of the show without any accidents (look, I wrote it~)

The blackout-challenged Shou-kun has 2 main goals for the future. First is to appear with all her classmates currently in Snow Troupe at the Sports Meet**** ✨ As our careers have gone on, more of our classmates have retired, and with Kira-kun being transferred from Snow Troupe to Cosmos Troupe she's felt once again how precious one's classmates are, apparently.

Shou: 'While it seems only natural to be together with everyone, it's actually such a valuable thing.'

Exactly!! Wonderful, Shou-kun!!

Her 2nd goal is to break down her own barriers 🔨

Shou: 'I want to destroy all the unconscious barriers I've build up around myself, and take on all sorts of different challenges!'

Oh my gosh!! Her eyes are sparkling 👀 Shou-kun spoke so passionately! While I'm normally around Shou-kun, I don't have a lot of chances to hold in-depth conversations with her, so I was really happy to get this chance to talk with her again 😃 Shou-kun is so cool onstage - did you discover any new charms from reading this? Shou-kun continues to advance, and I have high hopes for her future performances! Please come see her at the theatre! We'll be waiting 😃

Art Minor 2 (Nature & Environment)

This time, no stories to tell (well, maybe one, but I didn’t put it here, haha)! But a whole bunch of stuff I made instead, whoo boy! The theme of this minor was Nature & Environment. I had lots of fun, honestly! I’ll divide it in the 4 subjects I took :). It’s a long post, beware, haha.

Painting & Drawing:

So, this is actually a(n) (abstract) portrait of one of the students. It’s a one-line drawing :). It was, ah, interesting to make for sure....

We also had a session on how to draw “real” portraits.... with, like, the proper proportions and everything. It was interesting for sure!

This is the “self-portrait” I made! There is a lot to be said about this one (also because it is a self-portrait). I’d like to start with the mask. One of the reasons I used it is closely related to an Instagram post of mine (I’ll write it out). Sorry, it’s lone, though. “Lately, I have been forced to think about something I had been thinking years back. About the fact that in this individualistic society, you HAVE to stand out one way or another. I don’t want to. What’s wrong with simply being average and not special at all? What’s wrong with wanting to live a simple life with no particular interesting skills? (yes, I do realise I have some, but it doesn’t make me feel special or like I have to/want to brag about it...). This was something I noticed in particular 2 weeks back (in May, 2019), when my minor started again. We had to draw a realistic scene in the park. Afterwards, we would “redraw” this scene as we felt, heard and saw the things we encountered while drawing, changing the initial drawing drastically. So I did. However, the teacher told me he wanted to “see more of me” in the drawing. But how come he didn’t? The things I felt, saw, heard and fantasised about were all things that came from me and were pictured in the drawing. How is that not me?! Yeah, sure, the girl in my drawing looked manga/anime like. But is that honestly so wrong...? If that’s how I draw, if that’s me, how can you say you want to see more of the “me”? Honestly, I am so sick of this individualistic society that forces you to be “special”, “interesting” or “talented”. Is it so wrong to want to live simply? Is it wrong to not want to be seen as “different from the rest”? Can I just live with a blank face, trying in my own way, on my own conditions?” The mask used in this picture (and the Instagram rant, haha), has the Japanese characters: じ    へ  へ        の の         も        へ (henohenomoheji). They are commonly used to picture a (blank) face. As such, they are mostly used for mob characters, or those of little significance. So the mask itself already symbolises the wish to blend into the masses. On the other hand, the mask can also signify the ability to be flexible. As in, if you have a blank face, it means you are able to “paint over it”. To make yourself be who you want to be. And that clues into my hobby, which is cosplay. I can be whoever I want to be (with the proper means, haha), and that enables me to transform completely. So, yes, the mask signifies a lot to me. And that’s why I decided I wanted the picture to be like this. Because this is me in so many shapes and forms. Continuing on! Photography:

Let’s just say photography is not my thing... Luckily, we had two classes this block period anyway, so I didn’t have to suffer for very long.

Finally! The last subject!

Design:

Ohhhh, I loooooved design! There’s so much I did~ Sooo, we had to gather 5 objects we could find outside (in nature), and we had to take 3 pictures (the top one is said picture). Then we had to write a story based on the object/photograph (mine was a feather, by the way). You had to hand the story over to friends/family/etc., and they had to say one word about the story. So, my two words were “pessimistic” and “inspirational”. Based on those two words, we had to find a new (existing) “picture”. Then we had to bring items that had something to do with the story. So, I brought a ceramic “mountain” (one of the words used in my story) I made last block period. So based on that item, we had to design something around that concept and things that prefferably had to do with the (human) body. Sooo, I went to Wikipedia, and took a look at the words written there. So, that’s when we got to the word “relief” (or terrain, mayhaps). Then I started thinking how that was created (e.i. mountains, and its “relief”). So, that’s when we reached our tectonic plates. And then I started thinking about the fact that a mountain was basically a “print” of the earth (in a way). Okay, got all that? Then hopefully the next part will make sense as well, lol.

So, the first thing I did was woodcutting! I really wanted to try my hand at this, mostly because of my overlapping interest in Japan. I had a lot of fun, honestly! (I’ll put all the prints at the end ;))

Bad lighting is bad.... But after the woodcut, I tried my hand at linocut! Which went a whole lot smoother.... (I bought my own gouge set <3 - absolutely in love with it). I had a lot of fun with these, honestly!

Ah, yes, then I once more did some etching! I intentionally “messed up” the feather one (the stripe in the middle does kind of bother me...) to try and see what happens. I really liked the result of that one a lot! (once more, prints will be put down here~) Finally! I tried my hand at this:

screen printing! I really liked doing this! It’s very interesting to do, yet less intensive than any of the things I had done previously... I really had fun! And you can experiment a lot! Because wood is a natural material, it kind of soaks up the ink. So you get a grainy kind of print. It’s spotty, but that’s kind of charming in its own way, I guess?

I made loooots of prints for the linocuts, lol. They are way less spotty, and I really liked them! (the stuff in the very back isn’t mine, by the way).

I also really liked the ink colours I used! I also printed everything on postcard format.

The print is even more interesting in real life!

I also used a natural “print”. Don’t worry, it’s not actual snake skin... But it is actual snake skin shed/moulted skin. It’s from my own snake, Sora <3. So it’s kind of an endless supply, lol.

So, that’s all for the practical subjects! Now, it wasn’t all I did, and I have many, many more photos of the process... But the post wil get waaaaay too long if I want to show everything... So I mostly posted the endresults :).

There is one last thing I want to post here! Which are the “extras”.

Extras:

The sketches we had to make for capturing real life (mentioned at my self-portrait). I do have to mention that on that day it was bloody cold, it was raining, and we didn’t even know we had to be there... So I had a shit day, honestly....

I haven’t finished it, sooooo, I don’t have a very good picture, unfortunately... But this was the drawing I got a loooot of hate on, basically....

Ahhh, here’s the sketch, where you can see it a bit better... So basically, he wnted me to draw it bigger. Which I did. Then he suggested I made a selfportrait (instead of using a manga/anime like character......). Which I did. But don’t have a picture of, I believe. Well, I have a lot of issues with all of this, so I kind of want to drop it. Though I will finish the initial one for sure. I don’t care much for the second, the large, one.....

We also had workshops on drawing a naked model! Which was very interesting! I had never drawn a human/humanlike full-model, well, model. So I had many, many issues at first.... I especially had many issues with (human) proportions. But in the end, I had a lot of fun! I attended a second session (not the third, unfortunately), but I don’t have a picture of it (yet). I might edit it in later, buuuut, not sure...

So, I believe that was all! I had so much fun this period, and I’m super glad I decided to stay (I was only obligated to follow one minor). If I hadn’t, I don’t think that in the end I would be this satisfied. Also, this period was, like, 2 or 3 weeks shorter than previous one... So we were short on time, I guess... I learned a lot, I worked with many different materials, and in the end, I’m very happy. So, here are the final pictures of the ENTIRE table :).

Somehow, from the opening shot having an easy-to-draw-and-animate non-very-threatening monster, I can tell this is a game adaption.

…Likwise, when I have complaints about the birds in the OP being CG, you know this is an anime.

I think this “handing down the role of Red Riding Hood” thing is interesting. However, the humour Tao was going for at the time…was so not me.

I think all Tao said was that it was dangerous (in the audio). I think the subber was trying to insert a Zelda meme…what an evil agenda…(partially joking)

“…scary black thing…” – Do you mean the monster? If you mean the wolf monster and not the other clawed creature from the beginning of the episode, then that’s not black. That’s purple.

I think Brain’s Base is trying to make Red look creepy with her dead ahead stare, but…as much as I don’t like a fisheye lens, we could really use some right now.

Okayyyyyyyyyy…I knew anime could make anything a weapon, but a bookmark? That’s stretching credulity a bit. How is that badass??? C’mon, even healing was – kinda – badass in Merc Storia because it had a purpose. A bookmark is just used for keeping your place in a book. Unless it’s one of those metal ones that falls out of books all the time, they don’t hurt flies.

For some reason, I call Magical Girl Special Operations Asuka “Spec Ops Asuka”. Well, at least it makes sense…*shrugs*

(Trigger warning: prostitution discussion) - “…whoring yourself out.” – Err…that’s definitely not what I expected to see in an anime like this. I haven’t shied away from Shield Hero, but this I did a really big double take on for all the wrong reasons. Even with Sayoko to hold Nozo-chan back, I still think Nozo’s being really, really insensitive here.

Okay…the rules of long hair state you must pull your hair out from towels. They missed a good opportunity to do that shoujo sparkle thing with that, y’know, even if to create mood whiplash.

There is something to be said about bystander effect here, I think, and how people award proactivity rather than being passive...especially with magical girls and those other kinds of people who act as “heroes” during times of crisis.

Oh, of course, terrorism. Because we want our magical girls political now…*le sigh*

“Live your life for the sake of those who died.” – This reminds me of the situation with cian-aemilian all over again. I’m pretty sure I’ve said something of a similar nature in the past due to it. Update: my exact quote was “…what can the living do but keep those who have gone in their memory?”

Well, colour me impressed. I was about to jump ship due to the shoddy quality, but I think that quote at the end felt like a dig at me personally in the best (yet worst) way possible.  I did laugh a tonne at how stupid the gore looked, though, which might be a problem…

This is my final premiere…so I’d better make this count. I read somewhere the narrator was overpowering and read the first volume of manga, but otherwise that’s all I know about this.

Come to think of it, Abeno may be the master of the Mononokean, but it seems he reports directly to the Legislator. Is there a guy/youkai like that for the Justice (and presumably the other dude) as well?

“…is diseased and has a mental disorder.” – Well, I thought it honestly couldn’t get any worse, between slavery and rape accusations. It just did. Again, I don’t condone this stuff, but a story’s a story, no matter how depraved.

Seeing a story about the pits of despair naturally means you can see people get better – I think that’s why we need to have both stories that are light and fluffy + dark and dreary.

I see Naofumi keeps a Balloon (<- how I’ll refer to balloon monsters from now on) at his side all the time now, LOL. By the way, when he bought that ball, I honestly thought he was going to offer Raphtalia a Balloon instead of getting her a proper ball…

Update: Not sure if Naofumi’s inability to taste stuff is because of the betrayal or because of the fact he changed worlds…or maybe even something else?
