HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BESTEST WIDDLE SNAKEY WAKEY.

I can't believe my son is 18!! I estimated a birth date for him to be about a month before I got him in fall of 2006, since he was such a widdle month-old baby sneky. I always try to get a good birthday pic of him - especially after he eats and gets the good yawns in.

Pretty soon, he'll be off to snake college, for snakes. Dunno how we're gonna afford those ssssnudent loans.

One reason I really love working with hognose snakes is that they are VERY expressive.

I had Galaga with me in the nature center today and some kids saw her in her feeding bin after having just eaten and said they wanted to hold her, to which I said, "No, she just ate lunch, so we are not going to touch her."

The kids, hearing this, reached into her feeding bin and touched her anyway. A rat snake or a ball python would have politely ignored this, but Galaga flattened her head and let out a long, loud hiss. The kids shrieked and jumped halfway across the room, and their parents gave them a very smug "weren't you listening?"

This animal is very good at saying No! A valuable lesson for all of us to learn.

KNY - Fix it! AU (+ My Characters) Canon Hashiras

This is the first post of the modern AU series, where I'll share with you moodboards and headcanons, for this post I'll cover just the canon Hashiras and in the next ones we'll see the non-canon and the OCs ones. I can not belive that this au is what it took for me to realize Lisa has Reptile Nerd Weirdgirl vibes oh my GOD. Anyway once Robbie decides he's finally starting to be alright with this and let's Lisa hang out for Snake Time she is HYPED (poor boy is not used to this much attention and having his scales called pretty is very weird but also??? Very flattering????).

Robbie is not educated in the ways of snakery so when he transforms, ready for his 12 hours of weirdness, it's not GREAT to see his lower half looking like a battered glitter jelly bag from Claire's. Lisa shows up ready for a movie marathon and is EXTATIC. She's honestly been wondering if this was going to happen and has the pleasure (unfortunate duty) of delivering the good news (the dreaded long-ening).

Oh my god man I love snakes!!! Do you want a really cool snake?? Jokes on you, you get one anyways!!!

This is the Boomslang (Dispholidus Typus)!! It is in the family of Afro-Arabian Colubrids (A family of snakes that live in the Sahar Desert that is incredibly diverse!) Other species within the Colubridae (Not specifically Afro-Arabian) family are the Red-Lipped Herald Snake, the Northern American Racer, and, perhaps goofiest of all, the Common Sipo (Look a a picture of those fellas when you have the chance)

My favorite thing about the Boomslang species is that they are the most venomous opisthoglyphous (rear-fanged, features above) snakes in the world!! This means that the snake that famously killed Professor Karl Patterson Schmidt, who was studying the species at the time, is more closely related to my little snakey son, a Mexican hognose named Hermes, than to other largely feared African snakes, such as Black Mambas or Cobras!

While their diet mainly consists of other lizards as well as birds, they occasionally eat their froggy cousins and rodent adversaries. They reproduce Oviparously with clutches of about 10-25 eggs. They are diurnal and largely live in trees, hedges, and bushes.

The effects of their venom is the nastiest thing about them. They make you bleed from EVERYWHERE! first to go are your mucus membranes, such as your nose and gums. Then your eyes, then your... yknow your OTHER places. However! Don't fret too much! The Boomslang, while blindingly fast and incredibly aggressive, also has an antivenom! It is produced in South Africa.

In short, if you see a striking green fella lock eyes with you, puff out VERTICALLY (not horizontally like a cobra), run for your life! (Agressive Boomslang Above)

excited about: i am currently very strongly considering making my way down to the mothman festival this year. i live a lot closer to it than i used to (it's still a bit of a drive but like. half as much of a drive as it would be. a nothing drive to me.)

the only reason the reptiles one is hard is because i have to choose ONLY 5.... (you just unlocked unskippable dialogue)

leopard gecko. number one can't be anything else. this was my gateway reptile. they also have a lot of very unique morphs but my favorites tend to lean toward the basic spotted varieties tbh (mack snow my beloved). i still want my leopard gecko to look like a leopard gecko. if i had the space i would breed them, probably.

ball python. i know this is the most basic snake choice ever but i truly do adore them. they are just too damn adorable!! they come in even more varieties than leopard geckos but you need to be careful exactly what you're getting and who you're getting them from because certain morphs (ex.: spider) are genetically linked to neurological issues and there are breeders out there who don't care because it looks pretty.

brazilian rainbow boa. this is what i just got the tattoo of. they are fascinating animals -- i love arboreal snakes (shout out to the green tree python), but also the reason they are called rainbow boas is because they are naturally iridescent!!! it's not a very common trait in snakes but it's not entirely impossible to find either.

western hognose snake. i swear this list isn't just snakes. but i did have to shout out at lease one colubrid because i will admit i very much do favor the constrictors. but theyre native to north america and they have little pug faces that they use to burrow and their venom is so weak theyre not even considered to actually be venomous however they very rarely ever bite humans anyway because their number one line of defense is playing dead!!!! they even try to make themselves stink a little bit and everything

crocodilians. im just putting the whole family in here. the closest thing to a living fossil that we're ever going to get (except maybe a shark or a horseshoe crab). also of course i watched steve irwin. i especially like saltwater crocs and caimans, but i'll also take a good sized american alligator any day of the week.

bonus: blue tongued skink. because i just think they're neat. they are named that for a reason. i wish i had the space to keep one but they get quite large compared to geckos. that's also probably going to be the next tattoo on my reptile arm.

The Language of Love

If you are already convinced snakes are incapable of love, this post is not for you. But if you are open to the possibility that maybe they do, and maybe they love us too, this post explores that thought. Perhaps snakes feel it differently, perhaps they feel it the same humans do- though even humans experience love, be it platonic or romantic, differently from individual to individual. Different people also show their love in different ways as well! Yet still even with a divide between species most of us have felt love from our furry and feathered friends. Perhaps our scaly friends are also telling us they love us, we just might not understand.

When I first got my girl Scoria, if I could tell her only one thing it would be, "I love you." When I held her, I wondered if she understood how much I cared about her, and would do anything to protect her. When I pet her, I wondered if she knew how amazing I thought she was and enjoyed spending time with her.

And then I started watching livestreams of wild snakes, and how they act toward each other. (The above still is from Project Rattle Cam!) When the babies see a trusted adult, they slither all over them! How many times had my girl happily slithered all over me going no where in particular? I imagine that my finger petting her soft as a feather was probably quite similar to another snake greeting her in such a way.

Sakura is much more shy, yet wants to form a bond with me. I see it when she fights her fear to vibe with me. Sometimes she'll sit for hours at the edge of her tank nearest me, not wanting to come out, but just be near me.

Snakes like rattlesnakes and garter snakes will vibe peacefully with each other, with baby rattlesnakes sleeping near the adult rattlesnakes they trust to keep them safe.

Perhaps, when our shy snakes sits with us, facing their fears they're saying, "I'm scared, but I want to be closer with you." And maybe when our snakes slither all over us, going nowhere in particular, like their wild counterparts do with each other they're saying, "I'm so happy to see you! You're my favorite to be with!" I wonder if they could tell us one thing it would be "I love you, best friend!" And it's okay, best friend. I love you too, and already know. <3

what got you into breeding reptiles? especially for the species that you have available!

Sorry for taking me a bit to get back to you! I mainly use tumblr from mobile and if I don't answer asks immediately when I see them I tend to forget ;-;

When I was in my late teens I got REALLY into aquatics and had a ton of tanks set up. I was going through a lot of medical treatment at the time and had a good bit of time on my hands. Started dabbling a bit in breeding fish / aquatic inverts after I had a few successful spawns in community tanks. I worked as an aquarist / in commercial fish breeding and sales for a large private aquarium / LFS in my early 20s! But anyway, there's a lot of overlap between the aquarium & reptile hobbies and although I had a few amphibians (African clawed frogs mostly) growing up I don't really count them as my first herps- when I was 18 I got my first REAL reptile and got hooked on keeping them pretty quickly. He's actually still around! It's Jojo my poor old man leopard gecko. He's got to be... hm.. 15 or so? He was an adult when I got him so he's at the very least 14-15. Maybe older. Who knows! Still doing great and as grumpy as ever.

I started breeding reptiles slowly, I bred my first pair of leos in 2015 and only produced 3 hatchlings since I had to work out the kinks of egg husbandry and some issues with my first incubator. I'm glad I started slow! It really helped me to gain experience at a healthy pace and gave me time to work on building a solid reputation / get used to selling and working with reptile customers. I don't actually remember when I got my first snake? I have major time blindness so I would have to look back into my records but it was maybe a year or so after getting Jojo. Snakes initially intimidated me more than geckos but after gaining some confidence they definitely became my main obsession. I love to research and learn so it's been a fun journey for me. I started keeping with very "typical" beginner snakes but eventually found myself interested in more uncommon species that really do deserve more hype in the hobby! I was initially not going to attempt species like those due to their size and typical temperaments because of my lack of confidence with larger snakes!

I'm rambly today but ANYWHO. As for the species I have available currently (western hognoses, leopard geckos, and mexican pinesnakes) I love keeping and producing them for a lot of reasons!

Hognoses are SO much fun! They have so much big snake personality squashed into a teeny tiny body. They can be a bit of a pain to get started but are (honestly) pretty damn hardy too. Their venom is a bit of a turn off especially for parents with young children but I do still think they make great pets for a lot of beginning and advanced keepers alike!

Leopard geckos are what I consider the absolute BEST first reptile for most hobbyists! They're so hardy (almost to a detriment at points), usually have really personable little attitudes, and you can play around a lot with how you setup their cages and interact with them. They also are a great stepping stone for learning basic reptile husbandry.

And then we have Mexican pinesnakes! They were a dream species of mine for SO long and I felt so fortunate to be able to start working with them in 2017. They're incredibly intelligent, interactive, and confident snakes and I just love them to pieces. They have attitude, and let you know how they feel about things but the adults are typically very mellow and easy to work with after building a relationship with them. They're easy feeders, but do have a few quirks with regards to husbandry and feeding that could make them challenging for a first time snake owner. They also take a very long time compared to most other north american colubrids to hit maturity AND start out as "ugly ducklings" before gaining their brilliant colors so I sometimes just need to gush about them a bit because they definitely deserve to be more popular in the hobby than they are currently.

Okay so im really really reaaaally hyperfixated on ball pythons right now specifically because i really want one. i know like a lot about caring for them now and I’ve done so much research like i wanna get a young one that has been eating frozen thawed rats because live rats can be dangerous and their diets are hard to switch. also ive noticed some people dont give them something to climb in their enclosure which i would like to do because why not ive heard they like climbing sometimes but yeah i would love to design an enclosure that would appeal to the individual snake. i would also love to use it as artistic inspiration and maybe let it chill on my shoulders sometimes. but not too much because i wouldnt wanna stress it out. there seems to be a debate about reptile’s capacity to feel affection and i would really like to test that msyelf. just generally im really curious about reptile intelligence because idk i feel like they are smarter than people realize. i would probably name the snake crowley or sir pentious lol-

I always see her fitting in well w that 90s-ish style from the 80s to the 00’s ! (I actually have a 90's au for them too)

Shisui was one of Akami's first childhood friends and later her first lil love. She goes w Shisui to meet Sasuke when she’s 13yr, he’s only a few weeks old but the second she holds him and his chubby baby hand swipes her chin she falls in love. Bc of her relationship with Shisui Akami spends more and more time around Sasuke— he’d be tagging along after the big kids, but she always made time for him. Even if it was 20 extra minutes before a mission or after a long day of training, she’d hide her injuries and play with him instead. She’s one of many Anbu called to the scene the night of the Uchiha massacre. The second she found him all alone she knew she was taking him home and she quit Anbu that night.  Akami never felt heard or seen as a child so she tries her best to make sure that Sasuke has a voice. She didn’t intend to take on a parental role; it just happened over the years. She’s always open about his family and ready to listen when he confides in her, she teaches him every single uchiha jutsu she knows (and eventually kakashi does too) so Sasuke can still feel connected to his Clan. She gets him through his nightmares and defends him tooth and nail, she teaches him how to cook and use a sword. No matter what, he's always gonna be her baby and she’ll be his Kami-chan. There is nothing she wouldn’t do for him.  Akami and Kakashi knew each other as kids, they did not get along until their traumas sort of forced them to see eye to eye and rely on each other.  But it wasn’t a friendship until their early-mid teens, even then it always felt like more. Shortly after she takes in Sasuke they start a tumultuous FWB only to realize they very obviously love each other. Sasuke approves bc Kakashi makes Akami happy and is always there for her (for better or worse) and Kakashi and Sasuke start to have a very meaningful connection well before he becomes his sensei.  Yes parent squad ! Sasuke deserves the world and I love that you love him too!!<3 In ATLA Akami would be a water bender, she’s a descendant of the Yuki clan so it just seems fitting for her heritage! Tho I’d be wary of her healing abilities, she’s more of a fighter and I would not put it past her to learn how to blood bend! (She was Anbu Root for a reason💀)  Sasuke is fire bb! Kakashi I go back and forth on but I think he would be fire too .I love love love love ATLA and have tried to make an au for her but I find it hard to imagine Akami interacting w the gang (They all just feel so young lol- though she’d probably like Suki and Zuko best) I think that she would get along really well with Piandao! June, Jet and Iroh too. She’d def feel some sort of kinship for Azula (ruthless + manipulative never taught to love, w similar mommy and daddy issues!🤝lol) Yes Yes! I love snakes, they are so beautiful !! When I made my oc I really wanted to have her be ostracized because of her father and resemblance so it’s so fun to play w both the beauty and monstrous qualities for her. 🐍Akami and her summons Ryū are based off of mangrove pit vipers and Copper bellied water snakes ! She grew up in Arizona, a place where rattlesnakes have claimed at least as much territory as the local apes, and she loved them. A curious, wandering, reckless child of reckless parents, she met them everywhere. And she was always charmed by their delicate ridges and their demure reluctance to sing. Her parents and her teachers were helpless against a rapid-fire barrage of demands to know how rattlesnakes made that sound were they full of small objects or did they somehow handlessly build instruments that they grew into like hermit crabs or- Anyway eventually the books in the library revealed secrets about interlocking ridges of keratin (keratin is the stuff your fingernails are made from, child) and from there, insatiable, the girl went on to learn about heat pits and camouflage and venom glands and egg digestion, the peculiar movements of muscle that allow snakes to climb, about pythons and kraits and bandysnakes and the absolutely delightful coachwhips- and she grew up into a very respected herpetologist. And rattlesnakes were always her favorites. She might have housed a whole nest of them herself, in her house full of corn snakes and hognoses, if venomous snakes weren't disappointingly unethical to own. Still, she followed the science and knew the right people and she was the first one called whenever anyone got even slightly curious, about what rattlesnakes might be up to. She spent half her life in deserts, and the snakes always rattled louder for her, and she knew, in her heart not her head, that it meant, "Hello." She trusted snakes implicitly. They were her friends. And so she wasn't alarmed at all, one night in the desert, sleeping restfully in a valley surrounded by small, slinking predators, when she heard the sound. Even though it was the wrong hour for it. Even though, despite the muddied haze of sleep, she knew the sound, that well-loved sound, wasn't. Quite. Right. But she had studied snakes. Not the orchid mantis. Not anglerfish. She knew so very little about those creatures that lie and charm and mimic, because the rattlesnake is a very honest creature. But the sound that led her into the night- that not-quite-right sound that nonetheless drew her forth into the moonless hungry dark- wasn't honest at all.
