Hello and welcome to my rant from my time on Stranger Things Steddie and Friends Twitter for the past few months.

K I'm really pissed but its fine I wrote this all before the poll thing. Now I just. Can't get rid of it. (Me at tumblr headquarters right fucking now)

Anyway. Sorry for the interruption.

The fact that I've seen several ST fans claim most people who like steddie are fetishizing them is already shitty, but what makes it even more shitty is that they focus on them being two white cis guys fetishized by "white girls".

To reference the two white cis guys first, yeah, you got me there. That really is all those two are in the show. And if you wanna talk representation, well shit! Let's do it! Out of the main cast, we have 3 people of color: Lucas, Erica, and Argyle. Lucas is much too young to be in a relationship with either of them and already has one of his own, and Erica is ten years old. Now, I love Argyle, but he was written to be a comic relief character that had no arc and never met either of them. I think that's a wasted opportunity, Eduardo is great and would've done well as a fully fleshed out character, and there is a conversation to be had about whether that character would've been received the same way Eddie was being a white guy. But the thing is, he was never even CAST as a character who could be compared with Eddie- again, his whole character was "funny stoner." THAT is fucked, and people have definitely decided to ignore that fanon. In fact, Jargyle has become a pretty well known ship! Weirdly enough, the content I've seen of them has majorly been from people who also ship steddie! It isn't as popular as Steddie, though, and I don't think that's ONLY bc of half of the ship has less lore than eddie. There definitely is at least some internal bias us white queer folks should take into account when considering what ships we focus on in media.

However, I don't think that's why it's being brought up. I don't think I read tweets from lesbians with she/her in their bios condemning all us steddie ppl who just ship it because "they're two white guys we can fetishize for being in an mlm relationship" bc they're trying to be good allies. That COMPLETELY disregards that transmasc and nonbinary people (ESPECIALLY transmasc people of color) make a BIG chunk of the steddie fandom. Crazy, it's almost like Eddie was written to represent an outcast and literally GOT TARGETED BY CHRISTIANS and a bunch of people in marginalized communities related to his struggles! Except oh, yeah, that'd exactly what happened. And yeah, okay, he's a white guy and it IS pretty shitty that they cast a white dude to represent outcasts in general, but the people talking shit are watching the SAME DAMN SHOW that has a huge fucking cast and still has minimal representation. Fuck, man, Caleb McLaughlin has faced SO MUCH hate from assholes "fans" as the only black main character. Why the hell are people using that very real issue to back their shitty arguments against a gay ship on twitter?

Again, I wanna preface that 90% of these kinds of comments come from lesbians and bisexual people with she/her or she/they in the bio. I thought yall were COOL with the gay and trans people. Yall ARE queer people. Some of them were even big Ronance or Rovickie fans! YALL. WHY IS FRIENDLY FIRE ON??

A lot of this argument is backed by claims that steddie fans ignore canon queer rep, too, and I just don't understand that.

I know. Robin is representation. I am SO HAPPY to have her, and I'm so happy that Maya pushed for it, and as a transmasc person who was not out at the time and likes girls, I felt very seen when watching her coming out scene with Steve. However, I know I don't fully understand the lesbian experience as someone who likes guys too. I know Robin means a lot to wlw fans, especially lesbians. There have been instances where steddies have co-opted that scene to make it about steddie, and that is not okay. (I've never SEEN this happen, but I've seen people talk about it. All the steddie guys on Twitter that I follow were making it pretty clear that that was not cool and pretty fuckin lesbiphobic. I agree, whoever did that, fuck them. Wlw and specifically lesbian wlw relationships have very little rep and Netflix canceled all their shows and it's super fucked.) But besides this, I actually see a LOT of steddie fans who very much love Robin's character. Most of the steddie artists and fic writers I know are also ronance, rovickie, and/or Buckingham creators. A lot of them are wlw themselves!

//I should also note that Will is canonically gay now and I'm super excited, but truly, I just don't see as much appeal in byler because they're so much younger than me now. I totally love Will as a character, and I was around the kids' ages when the first season came out, but I'm in college now. I relate a lot more to the older kids! I'm real happy to have will as mlm rep and I hope he gets his moment in s5. I just didn't latch onto him and Mike the way I did Steve and Eddie! We all got preferences and that's fine.//

All this to say, I'm just so tired of Twitter, man. I just saw a post about how many cis women who claiming its "ableism" to say they have to be around anyone who identifies as masculine, including queer men, queer mascs, cis men of color, butch lesbians, etc. And I've seen a lot of that lately too. It's just so weird to see someone who identifies as a queer woman talk shit abt a steddie fan with a hellcheer shipper.

(man I can't even get into that rn. Chrissy and Eddie shippers in ST fandom are a whole other bout of drama. I've seen steddies be pretty nasty on the issue toward bi women who ship that bc of age difference, which I never really understood because eddie has no confirmed age?? Like idk how he can be a super senior AND 17 on his missing poster but whatever, I'm not stressing abt that as long as you dont make them have a weird age gap on purpose. Hell, I even thought they were love interests at first, too. But DAMN I've seen some hellcheer people that hate steddie. None of this justification type shit either, they just say "it doesn't make sense" and "I'm scared of steddie" and "they ruined the fandom and eddies character" like bro that's literally homophobia. like oogily boogily gay people jumpscare homophobia. So I just don't talk to those guys usually.)

Whatever abt the straight ppl tho they're never gonna get my weird gay stuff. But what SUCKS is when it's other gay people saying this stuff. Like what about mlm wlw solidarity man? Why do I gotta see a rovickie stan and a hellcheer girl talking abt how steddie shippers are all misogynistic and hate women?? Esp when so many are transmasc?? It's getting weird and TERF-y and I just. I wish we were cool again. ST is abt outcasts at the end of the day, it's why we root for them and relate to them. There aren't even a lot of queer people from the 80s around because of the kinda hatred people like us face. Not to mention racism, ableism, misogyny, all of it. For centuries. The people up top all hate us. We gotta have each other's backs and twitter is making us INSANE instead. God.

5. Do you respond to comments? Yes OMG I can't believe there are people out there who don't. I start kicking my feet whenever I see a comment on my work (which isn't very often) so of course I respond

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? My Marvel Trauma one-shots is probably has the angstiest ending because I just rewrite the scene in my image without fixing it at all. So I make it angstier than it already. I think that's the closest to what I have

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Supernatural Pride is most likely my happiest one because I wanted to spread some love and comfort for Pride month like...two years ago I think

8. Do you get hate on fics? So far no. But I'm still kinda waiting, yk. Like I'm not invincible and not everyone is going to like my work so...yeah :)

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I have, and I can. But it's not my first choice. Usually its MLM, I'm not comfortable with writing WLM, so I just don't.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? My Eret Son of Eret x Trans reader fic. IDFK what I was thinking when I wrote that...but I did. And it's currently collecting dust and I don't think I will ever dust it off and work on it again. There would have to be a very specific occurrence for that to happen.

16. What are your writing strengths? Uhmmmm...I guess I would say that my strengths lie in my ability to write a pre-existing character as they were originally designed. i often find that some fics make pre-existing characters ooc and it's frustrating but I would say that I'm not bad at that.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Grammar. Dude every fucking time, not matter how much I try to edit and check over my work there are always grammatical errors.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic? I do it sometimes when it's relevant, like in Na'vi or with words like Kriff and such but I don't often include lengthy dialogue in different languages. Just a word here or there.

19. First fandom you wrote for? My Hero Academia sigh I'm not proud of it, and tbh it's so fucking cringe but I was young and agsty and...yeah we aren't gonna talk about it

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic? The only time I've used "another language" in a fic is when I have clones use Mando'a words...but they don't usually use full sentences.

19. First fandom you wrote for? When I was an early teen I wrote for the Disney show Pair of Kings. 😂 However, I think I deleted the story after a couple of days...the first fandom I stuck to for a bit of time and still have stories floating around out there was Bonanza.

20. Favorite fic you've written? Basically any story I've written with the boys as cadets. They All Fall Down is probably one of my favorites, just because it reminds me so much of growing up with siblings. I also loved writing the Stardust Conspiracy.

literally could not agree with you more about the Steddie tagging stuff, like, I don't hate Eddie or Steve - I really fucking like Steve (despite his goddamn 6 kid fantasy which seems barely in character anyway) and Eddie is fine, a woefully misused, kinda overhyped, character that had lots of potential but that's besides the point - but this whole thing seems to have gotten so out of hand

sure, there is the option to exclude relationship tag and all that jazz, but we really shouldn't have to do that just to read fics about a pairing in their on tag - it's so crazy. it seems like some people just don't understand basic Ao3 usage and how to not clog their fics with irrelevant tags

when I look at Ronance centred fics (not tagged as multi, that classic F/F red goodness), if they have Steddie tagged it's as 'background/mentioned' in line with how central it is to the fic itself, right, but when you see Steddie fics tagged with Ronance not being 'background/mentioned', only to read it and realise, oh shit, this is just Steddie like, 1 sentence of Ronance, it's really annoying

this probably makes very little sense, but i found your page and it resonates so much about something so goddamn frustrating

(also, your fic concepts are badass and I would 100% read them.)

the thing that makes it doubly annoying is that excluding tags doesn't even work. if you exclude ste/ddie, you exclude any good ronance fic that has them tagged in any way. if you use otp:true, the fic count drops from 2k to like 500. 5-fucking-00. no way are 1.5k of the fics in our tag ste/ddie and otherwise, because if so, that just highlights a whole other problem. and, as you said, it also just isn’t a length we should have to go to regardless. 

i’m finally going to just come out and say this feels like an issue of mlm shipper entitlement. everyone who’s told me they’ve experienced this in other fandoms has said it was with a mlm ship. as someone who’s only shipped wlw ships (none of which had large competing mlm ships), it’s not an issue i’ve even encountered until now. and while ste/ddie shippers are constantly flooding our ao3 and even tumblr tags, the reverse just isn’t happening. (or it wasn’t; i know some people are doing it on purpose now, and good for them, frankly.)

now, there have been some ste/ddie shippers who have asked how to stop their fics from coming into our tag, and those people have all my uwus, but i can’t tell if the rest (and majority) of them are unaware, obnoxious, doing it on purpose or a combo of the last two. (and considering my meme about this issue has like 2k fucking notes, my money’s on obnoxiously doing it on purpose.) 

we asked politely. it almost seemed to get worse. we fought fire with fire. they got a ronancer’s ao3 account suspended. nobody really wants to ask nicely on their fics/posts in case they weaponize the report system against us. it’s such a hot issue, other lgbt+ shippers in this fandom are having to deal with it. like, how entitled do you have to be about your precious never-gonna-happen semi-attractive white boys to be this notoriously annoying? i mean jesus christ. i was completely neutral on ste/ddie, and now just seeing the name irks me. imagine being so infuriating that you make people hate your ship just by association asdfghjkl.

(also thank you. i’ll probably never write them because my writing brain is on holiday, but people are always welcome to take the concepts and run with them lol.)

Is it common for Mormons to be involved in MLMs? Cos my grandpa and his wife are into one, despite the fact he served as a public accountant for decades, and my ex-stepmom (my dad divorced her, thankfully) has pretty much always been into MLMs. Anyway, MLMs are pretty much money cults anyway, so like, does Mormonism lead them into these?

Cognitive dissonance in others is absolutely infuriating to me. To either lie to others by lying to oneself, or to simply exist in such ignorance without ever seriously reflecting on one's views and how contradictory they are, is infuriating to me.

In a way, I wish I was a lapsed/ex-Catholic instead of an ex-Mormon.

Catholics are baptized at birth. AT BIRTH. You know what this means? It can't be argued that those who were baptized at birth consented to baptism.

Mormons, insidious half-assed cultist anabaptists (with a lowercase a) as they are, wait until you're 8 years old, old enough to understand that stealing a cookie from the cookie jar makes mommy and daddy mad but nothing more complex than that, and that's the age they baptize you at. Because you understand language and morality to a very minuscule extent, they argue that it's your choice to be baptized. That you consented.

And all you really were - all I really was - were/was a kid who wanted to fit in, who knew nothing of the ghosts of the church's past, who knew you wouldn't fit in and your parents would be mad at you if you said "No." Maybe you were completely brainwashed back then, but now, as an adult, or maybe even as a teenager, you know the horrible things that church has done and teaches.

And you remember the Mormons wait until children are 8, "so they can choose to be baptized".

Kinda tired of people saying "extremism" and "radicalization" are bad things

If you supported the BLM protests last year, to any degree, the state considers you an "extremist". They consider you "radicalized".

If what you mean is that someone is turned to fascism/reaction, say it! Be clear! Don't allow the liberals to make support of abolitionist movements sound like, not just a bad thing, but something as bad as supporting fascism, by legitimizing the use of "extremist" and "radical(ize(d))" as negative, villainous nouns and adjectives!

1) We do! Our system name (our url) was based on a hyperfixation we shared

2) Most of us chose our names from the existing namehoard we shared when we thought we were a singlet. One of us had to ask around for name suggestions because it didnt vibe with any of the ones we already had stored away

3) Nope!! We're all some form of trans and none of us are cool with the body's deadname. Surprisingly, none of us go by the name most people know us by either. We chose it when we first realized we were trans, but none of us go by that name individually, so it's kind of a collective name for all of us since nobody irl knows we're plural and that's the name they know us by.

4) Probably me lmao. I mean. Transmasc femboy named Elliott? Yeah.

5) Either Vindemiator, Glitch, or Roach. All kind of odd names.

6) T and I are pretty close to the body's age, C and S are older by at least 5 years, Riles is about 5?? Glitch and Vin dont really have ages, I think P is a little younger than the body's age, and I have no idea for R and Cr.

7) Yeah! Vin and Glitch don't really have ages since one is immortal and the other is an android.

8) Probably Vin. We dont know his age but hes probably super old, being immortal and all.

10) Ours wants to be treated like a kid. They dont really have the emotional capacity for handling any sort of adult things/responsibilities.

I think anti endos that fakeclaim especially think that endos are just singlets, so when they fakeclaim the only person they're hurting is the "singlet" behind the account, but endo headmates are real and there and they're essentially telling those headmates that they arent real or they aren't people, which can really hurt.

29) We're all very solidly pro-endo. We're pretty sure we're at least partially traumagenic, but theres a fair chance that were partially endo too, and even if we arent, we're still 100% supportive of systems who are.

Its not a fun debate and it's not something to "believe in" or not and it's not just an opinion-- what you're debating is the existence and personhood of real people (not directed at op or anyone specific.) We experience this type of debate over our existence and rights enough because we're trans, so we know how exhausting and painful it can be to hear other people treat your existence as a debate.

she apologized for how she handled the situation and apologized for brushing off someone's honest criticisms as hate. what more is she meant to do? throw herself onto a pyre? is she not allowed to feel lousy that this whole thing blew up in her face? because she's an adult and she made a mistake, she's not allowed to be sad or stressed? she's still an imperfect human. apologizing immediately usually means people are still sensitive to their own hurt of being called out because it's fresh and on their mind so it tends to slip into their apology, but if she had waited any longer to compose herself, you guys would probably have an issue with how long she took. also, in aaaaaallll of this, I've have yet to once see what exactly about her work is so problematic? I've read her fic and I personally can't see anything wrong, although I will admit that yes, I'm a white ciswoman but I'd like to think I'm aware of negative tropes. but the only thing touted is "it made an mlm uncomfortable" but HOW??? honestly, I want to know! if anything so I can avoid doing the same thing! how is anyone meant to learn when you're not bringing up these points as often as you're explicitly laying out the problems in her apology and whatnot. I've seen 6 posts about how shit the apology was and for why and I've not once seen the original comment detailing why the fic was problematic, and I've been looking on twit, tumblr, insta, and ao3. if it's been deleted, why isn't anyone stating again and again what's wrong? also, if someone is making fic/art you don't like, don't. interact. with. it. there's tons of stuff on ao3 and twit that I don't like, some of it that I think is disgusting (do you know how many fics there are with keith/kosmos?) and I just scroll past it cause it can't hurt me if I don't read it. there's one artist that's pretty popular on Twitter and I personally really hate they way they draw klance but it's all over my tl. I respect that person's art style and creativeness and keep on moving. other people enjoy it, good for them. and if I start reading something and get surprised with something I dont like, I leave! find people who write things you like and stop engaging with creators who's things you don't like, as far as I know no one is holding a gun to your head making you read problematic fic. also for as much as you rag on her for the words she used to apologize, you don't seem to be considering your own words when offering criticism. if Taylor mistook the person's words as hate, couldn't it have been because the way he worded the complaint was done hatefully? lastly, no one, absolutely no one, is required to talk about world issues when they're running a fandom account,no matter how "big" they are. we all know what's going on in the world, we're surrounded by sad and stressful stories practically 24/7 and if someone isn't, they're probably curating their social feeds to be that way (like you should do when it come to kl content creators you don't like). people sending hate in Taylor's defense are in the wrong I agree, and this isn't hate its critism its a discussion, but Taylor isn't responsible for, how many people did you say? 16k on twit? even if she said hey guys stop, you think they would? she's can't control all those people and expecting her to is nonsense. im pretty sure i said its good that she realizes she handled it poorly. but she makes the whole apology about this, doesnt directly talk about the issues and i know someone went to her to talk about it. also, it took her a day to say something about it so it wasnt exactly immediate (in the sense people had already stopped talking about it but that doesnt mean they werent still bothered). the apology was directed at mlm, and i havent seen one saying it felt genuine. of couse she can be hurt but when you apologize to a marginalized group the focus shouldnt be your feelings, but the feelings of the ones you have hurt.

as you said, you are a cis woman, of course its not going to hurt you in this case. but if people are making harmful content its not a simple matter of “dont interact with it” because they will still be promoting it, other people are going to read it, and media influences how we see minorities so of course people will not like when they see bad portrayal of them. also, tumblr sucks so even if you want to just “dont interact with it” its hard because even after blocking you can still cross the content of someone. not sure how it works on twitter but anyway this discussion started on tumblr and tumblr doesnt stop people who were bothered by her to avoid her by blocking.

ignoring world issues is a privilege. if someone is able to turn off from all the problems in the world, its a privilige. yes no one should talk aobut it all the time thats not even healthy, but to never talk about it is a privilege. thats what black people are saying, they cant just turn off from racism, so yes they are going to expect white people to do something. online honestly i cant do shit, i dont think anything i reblog here does a difference and i do what i can in my own country, but she has a plataform that could help bring awareness. again, its a privilege to be able to curate your social media to be a perfect happy place.

Appreciation Post + Needing your input!

We appreciate the love you are sending our way for this project. At the beginning of it, my wife and I talked about it into details about what we wanted from it and how we knew we might just not have any sort of success whether that meant financially, critically, or socially. We wondered if this project would be something we could find ourselves doing in the long term, if it was something we could see ourselves doing full-time, and if it was something that would be genuinely appreciated.
