Base headcanons for this AU beneath the cut! ↓ ↓ ↓

Luffy's a mermaid who was raised in Fuusha village, just like in canon. And, just like in canon, despite being a mermaid, she SUCKS at swimming, a fact that Shanks finds absolutely hilarious. She still wants to become a pirate, she still eats her devil fruit and becomes a rubber mer(?), she still gets kidnapped by Higuma (who sees her as an excellent way to rake in cash, given how valuable mermaids are on the slave market), and Shanks still gives her his hat.

As a devil fruit user, Luffy's already atrocious swimming skills are now at zero. She can still breathe under water, but will sink like a stone, her strength sapped by the sea, and if she loses consciousness she'll stop breathing too. Needless to say, she stays out of the water, and the villagers come to accept that sometimes, mermaids just live on land.

Garp still comes back, and is still furious at her wanting to become a pirate (and inwardly, extremely concerned that a bandit tried to catch and sell her), and still takes her to live at Dadan's where she meets Ace.

Ace has no idea what to think of the weird fish-brat who he's now told is gonna be his sibling, and resolutely ignores Luffy. He's inwardly slightly impressed as Luffy continues to follow him through the mountain every day, not even particularly hindered by lack of legs and using a mixture of crawling, squirming, hand-walking, and ricocheting forward with rubber arms to move.

Luffy still meets Sabo the same way as canon, and is still caught by Porchemy, who at first is thrilled because a mer brat! That'll bring in WAY more money than the spare change Ace stole! But in the end, he loses his temper at Luffy's stubbornness and still beats her to a pulp.

Ace and Sabo still rescue Luffy, and they still exchange sake cups and become brothers.

Yes, brothers.

Because at this point, neither Ace nor Sabo nor any of the bandits, nor anyone really on Dawn island save Makino and Garp actually know that Luffy's a girl. Not even Luffy.

The three brothers promise to each other that they'll all leave the island when they turn seventeen, setting out to sea to become pirates (Ace and Sabo are honestly a little concerned, given how often people try to sell Luffy, and how despite aquatic appearances Luffy's vulnerable af in water, but decide to wait and see. They have seven years together, Luffy ten until seventeen, who knows how much stronger their baby brother will get in that time).

Sabo "dies."

Ace and Luffy continue to train, and things don't change until Ace is seventeen, shortly before he sets out to sea.

He's let Luffy crawl into his blanket to sleep with him (partially cold-blooded, Lu gets cold easily when inactive), and Ace realizes that his lil brother's chest feels a bit lumpy.

Concerned, he makes Luffy have it checked out by the bandits, who are shocked to find developing...breasts?

That can't be right...right?

Dadan makes a call to Garp, who snorts and says of COURSE Luffy's a girl, didn't he say granddaughter?

No, he had not, he had only mentioned "grand child."

Everyone is shocked, but none more so than Ace, who really doesn't know what to do with this new information.

(Luffy's not quite sure what a "girl" is, and when she asks Ace, Ace honestly doesn't know how to define "girl" either, so she doesn't get what the big deal is)

Ace realizes he's troubled because he can't remember the number of times he's rescued Luffy from potential traffickers, and the number of times he's heard the lament, "Pity it's not female, it'd be worth quadruple," from the kidnappers before he beats them to a pulp.

He already had doubts about letting Luffy go out to sea alone, three years after he's left. But now knowing that Luffy's a girl, and one of the most sought-after species that traffickers target...he knows the world out there is much bigger than a teeny peaceful East Blue island, and Luffy may not get lucky every time, and may not be strong enough in just three years.

But at the same time, it's not like he can order her to stay here. There's no way Luffy'd listen; the sea calls to her, freedom calls to her, and Ace understands that more than anyone.

Sabo, Ace thinks, what would you do?

The night before he leaves, Ace tells Luffy that there's been a change of plans.

He's still leaving for sea. He's going to get stronger, and work his way towards becoming Pirate King.

BUT, three years later, Luffy will NOT leave Dawn Island alone.

Ace promises that he'll come back, a stronger pirate capable of looking out for his baby brother (because girl or not, they exchanged vows of brotherhood, and that's something that can't be changed).

He refuses to let Luffy be his captain, he's still got his pride, but maybe, maybe if Luffy becomes strong enough, he'll let her be co-Captain.

Luffy is thrilled, because she wanted to be pirates WITH Ace, and grudgingly accepts the compromise, and promises to train and wait for Ace's return.

Ace leaves Dawn island, and makes a name for himself on the Grand Line (he's PISSED when he finds out he's eaten a devil fruit, because now how's he supposed to rescue Lu from drowning when he can't swim himself???).

He even eventually makes it to Whitebeard, and eventually comes to admire the man. Whitebeard invites him to his crew, and Ace honestly replies that a large part of him wants to accept...but he can't. He promised his baby brother that they'll be pirates and co-captains together, and he can't join another pirate crew without Luffy agreeing too. Even so, and he knows it's selfish of him, he wants to call Whitebeard his father.

Whitebeard tells him that Ace is already his son, regardless of where his allegiances lie, and gives him his blessing to return to East Blue to fetch Luffy. Whitebeard laughs that he can't wait to meet the lil brat that Ace speaks so highly of, and for Ace to hurry up and come back to the New World so they can meet.

Ace plans on traveling light, his former crew all choosing to join the Whitebeard pirates except for his first mate, Deuce. Ace loves his crew, but they're also his crew, and knows that he wants to make their crew with Luffy. So he thinks he and Deuce will be a good starting point (You're just bringing me along bc you want someone who can swim on the crew, Deuce accuses).

As they're planning on leaving, Marco lets slip to fellow commander Thatch that he heard that Ace's "little brother" is actually a super cute girl.

The next morning, Thatch shows up too, insisting that he come along, because hey! He's been with the Whitebeards for ages and hasn't been to Paradise in a while, he wants some change! And won't it be nice to have someone as reliable as him along, just until they get back to the New World and reunite with the Whitebeards? Really he has no ulterior motives like wanting to check out Ace's supposedly hyper hot baby brother-sister!

Ace is suspicious, but Thatch is already on board and the other Whitebeards are already waving so he lets it go.

(Shortly after they leave, Thatch discovers a devil fruit. Deuce tells him to sell the damn thing, it'll taste like shit, but Thatch thinks boy wouldn't it be great to be able to woo Ace's hot brother with a really cool devil fruit power. So he eats it, and yeah it tastes like shit, but now he can control Darkness which is sorta badass?)

(Somewhere on the Whitebeard ships, Blackbeard is still waiting for someone to find the darkness devil fruit, and well, it doesn't happen)

Before Ace returns to Dawn Island, part of him still hopes that Luffy looks passably like a guy. Having been to Fishman island, having befriended Jinbe, he knows that while mermen can still be targeted, mermaids are exponentially more vulnerable. He's learned the kinds of clothing that can help conceal tails, and is hoping that there's a slim chance they might be able to be pirates without the world knowing that Lu's a mermaid.

His hopes are shot when Luffy rockets into his arms at the dock, and his face is immediately buried in enormous tits that definitely weren't there three years ago.

Despite Ace's growing concerns (and red face; why does he feel so hot??? It's not his devil fruit...), Ace lets Luffy give Deuce a beating (why me?!) to claim her position as Ace's Co-Captain of the newly established ASL pirates (because if we're pirates together, Sabo has to be with us too!).

Luffy's gotten a lot stronger, but is still utterly ignorant of the outside world and the dangers it holds (such as the drooling Thatch who immediately wins Luffy over with his cooking despite Ace's burning glares). She's reckless and falls into the ocean every damn day, and while Deuce dives in after her and they've discovered her useful ability to talk to fish to ask for help, it still gives Ace heart attacks.

They still pick up more crew members while in East Blue, including Roronoa Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji, a pervy cook who competes daily with Thatch for Luffy's affections through food (Luffy appreciates the food).

At Arlong Park, Luffy encounters fishmen for the first time in her life. Arlong mocks Luffy's choice of friends and family, and invites her to join his crew made of her own kind. Fishmen and mer are the superior race, and Luffy will make a fine wife, Arlong says.

Luffy breaks his nose off, and Nami joins their crew.

Luffy's chosen mode of transportation is on the back of one of her sturdier crew mates, usually Ace, but often Zoro too. She unfortunately hates all the long skirts/robes Ace suggested for her to hide her tail, and so Ace has decided that being as intimidating as possible while carrying his brother glued to his back is the only way to go.

Needless to say, news of the former Spade Pirates Captain + Whitebeard Commander Thatch (are they an extension of the Whitebeards??) establishing the new ASL pirates spreads fast. That, and rumors that there's a beautiful young mermaid on board who can't swim. And despite the strength of the crew and their attempts at vigilance, Luffy's still dumb and gullible, and is kidnapped (and rescued) a dozen times before they're even on the Grand Line.

(after a few times, Luffy's uncharacteristically quiet, and privately asks Ace if they can break up the crew. She's holding Ace back; she not only made him come back to her, but half their adventures just seem to be her crew rescuing her. She's strong enough to defeat enemies, but not save herself. Ace tells her to shut up, and never bring this up again; they're BROTHERS, and he's not going to leave her behind or make her abandon her dreams when she can't accomplish them alone, and that's his choice. Luffy doesn't bring it up again, but works harder than ever to become stronger and earn recognition as co-Captain when the world seems intent on thinking of her as Ace's pet.)

During one of these kidnappings, Luffy's successfully brought all the way to an auction house before her crew can rescue her. An auction house that unbeknownst to them, was under investigation by the Revolutionary Army.

Liberating slaves is an unfortunately common mission for them, and Sabo's doing final sweeps as Koala frees the last of them when he notices a tank stowed away in a corner. He's familiar with these tanks, used to showcase mermaids in the rare occasions one can be caught, and it looks empty but he's still drawn to it for some reason.

It's only when he gets closer that he notices a mermaid crumpled at the bottom of the enclosure. She's completely slumped over, and he's afraid she's already gone, even as something about her screams with familiarity.

He's cracked the tank and has reached in to pull her out, when the wall behind him explodes in flames, revealing a furious Ace who snarls at the strange man with his hands on his baby brother...

...and then Sabo's memories come back.

All Heart and Beskar

Synopsis - A bounty hunter turned bounty, you find yourself as the assistant to one of the most feared bounty hunters in the parsec and his little green child with big ears.

A/N - Hi! This is the first story I have written in a long time so any feedback or constructive criticism is greatly appreciated! This will hopefully be a multi chapter story! I have kept physical descriptions to a minimum but the character is afab. It is a reader x Mando story but I have avoided using Y/N. My knowledge of Star Wars is rusty af so probably massive irregularities with canon lore. 18+.

Warnings - 18 +. Violence and death.

Chapter 1 

[3.1k Words] Chapter 1 - Back Alley Introductions

You docked in Canto Bight, a bustling casino city on the edge of the Sea of Cantonica. The bright lights were visible through the cloudy atmosphere as you landed your ship. Dry desert stretched as far as the eye could see outside of the city border. It was early evening, the sun was just setting over the west horizon.

Once landed and off the ship, you were met with an eager bay mechanic. A young lad who’s excitement at your ship was causing him to bounce around.

“I’ve never seen a hwk290!” He cried. “And in mint condition!” You smiled at him. “If I had the money I’d buy it off you!”

“Unfortunately she’s not for sale. But I need you to check the hyperdrive. It’s slowed.” You grinned and handed him the control panel to the ship's security. “Press here to lock and here for security. I’ll be back by the morning.”

He nodded, and ran around to the door. You could hear him excitedly explaining the ship to his silent pit droid.

You step out of the bay onto the busy street, people milled around everywhere, music and chattering filled your ears. You pulled your hood up over your head, shrouding your face in darkness. It was normal for people to wear hoods on Cantonica. The dusty planet sported high winds that would blow sand through the streets. You kept close to the crowd edges, passing cantinas filled with people and creatures. The air was warm and smelt like food, smoke, and….and Sewage. You wrinkle your nose.

You skulked around the Main Street, waiting for the puck to beep. It was still flashing so you knew the quarry was still alive. Your hands rested on the hilt of your knives strapped to your thighs. Again it wasn’t bizarre to see blasters and knives casually strapped to people. If anything the culture of always being armed made bounty hunting just that bit easier. You glanced up to the towering buildings either side, towards the small strip of night sky. Thousands of stars glitter through the planet's dusty atmosphere.

Beep! Adrenaline courses through you at the sound. He’s close. You duck into a side alley, and unsheathe your knives. You grasp the hilt and rest the flat edge of the blade underneath your forearm. Stepping back out into the bright street you moved towards the centre of the street, weaving in between people, head up surveying the area. The puck beeping softly. Closer.

A glint of silver hits your peripheral vision. You twist trying to see where it came from. Nothing is there when you turn round. The puck stops beeping. You curse. Turning around completely you begin to walk back up the street, the puck starts beeping again. So he’s here somewhere. You look up, balconies full of people fill your vision. You scan the area. There again! Another flash of silver. You twist, standing in the middle of the street.

That’s when you see him.

Standing taller than most in the crowd, silver beskar glinting in the casino light. You freeze, unsure of whether he’s noticed you or not.

You slip out of the main body of the crowd, quickly darting down a side street. It’s empty, the noise of the street fading slightly. You keep your back pressed against the wall of the building. If he’s seen you, he’ll follow.

The Mandalorian appeared at the top of the alley. Head scanning the area. You watched with a bated breath as he walked down towards you. You pressed closer to the wall. When the Mandalorian had passed, you crept out of the shadows, knives poised and ready.

“What are you doing here.” you hiss. He stops and turns slowly to face you. You thought you recognised the helmet, it looked familiar.

The Mandalorian stays quiet.

“I asked a question.” The Mandalorian stepped towards you, you don’t lower the knives.

“We’re both chasing the same quarry. Greef told me I’d find you.” Ah so that’s where you knew him from. The Guild. “It’ll be easier if we work together.” You furrow your brows.

“I didn’t realise you were looking for a partner Mando.”

“I’m not.” He pauses. “But I think we need to work together. Split the bounty.”

You scoff. “I don’t even know you. How can I trust you?” It's an honest question. You knew of his reputation but you also thought he worked alone.

He reached up. You tensed waiting to see where his hand went next. It curled around to a puck strapped to his chest. He flicked it over, red light blinking rapidly, the beep was faint but you identified it as the noise it makes when the holder finds it’s target. You held your breath as Mando pressed a button.

A hologram of you appeared. Your mouth hung open in shock. Your blood felt cold, and your stomach felt like it had dropped. So this is what it feels like.

“I won’t turn you in. Is that a reason?” The voice was clipped.

“Why is there a bounty after me?” Your voice was wavering, scared.

“Why is there a bounty after anyone?” You stared at him. Blades still drawn. He still held the puck out. Every inch of you wanted to destroy it but you knew better. If you did it would send an alert.

“Did Greef give you this?” You swallowed. You thought you were friends… business partners at least. The guild was supposed to offer some protection against bounties.

“No. I got it off an assassin who had been trailing you since before Nevarro.”

You blinked up at him. His dark visor was watching you. “But why help me? You don’t know me.”

The Mandalorian stayed quiet. You figured you wouldn’t get an answer so you ask another question.

“Are they still after me?”

“I have reason to believe so.”

“What can I do?”

“Help me with this bounty. Then we’ll discuss.”

“Where do you want to start?” But the Mandalorian was already moving past you. You ran to catch up, taking two strides for everyone one of his. At the top of the alley he motioned for you to wait. Mando passed you an ear comms unit. You put it in. 

“Can you hear me? Don’t speak. Nod.” His voice was rich and deep in your ear. You nodded slowly. “Good. Wait for my signal.”

“What’s yo-....” -ur signal. But Mando had already vanished into the crowd without answering. How did he just disappear?!

You walk back into the crowd, melting away with the movement of the city. Your heart rate is still high, you can hear the blood rushing in your ears. You’re being hunted. You feel sick. You carry on walking, knives still gripped tight in your hand. You sheathed them quickly, better not draw any unwanted attention to yourself.

“X Bar…” the voice crackles through the comms unit. You stop and scan the area. The bar is just up ahead on the left.

“Got it.”

“Get round back. Cover the area.” You sound an agreement as you slip down an alley. Turning to make sure no one saw. You cling to the wall, shadows concealing you. The alley is quiet.

What if this is a trap? Can you trust the Mandalorian?

Why is he helping you? Why hasn’t he killed you for the money?

You crouch in the shadows, eyes trained on the back entrance.

“I’m here.” You whisper into the comms. Mando doesn’t reply.

You try to slow your breathing. He’s helping you. He’s helping you. He’s helping y-.... Your mantra is cut off as a crash sounds from the back door.

A wiry man slipped out of the back door. You could hear a crackling through the comms unit, and barely made out the words “back….door….”

You spring into action, slipping quietly out of the shadows. The man is running away from you. You move silently behind him. He’s slipping through the back alleys, twisting and turning. His movements are jerky and uncoordinated. Drunkard.

He stops, and you slip back into the shadows. The sounds of other drunk patrons ring throughout the air. A crash of glass breaking eased the quarry's nerves and he continued on, this time walking.

You manage to get up behind him. Padding softly until you were so close you could smell the alcohol on him. You flick one knife around his throat, the other pressing into his back. Easy target.

“I suggest you don’t make a sound.” You hiss quietly. The man starts to twist around, you press the edge of the knife harder into his throat. “They want you alive, but I will drop you off dead.”

The man stills for a second, before grabbing your arm, trying to remove the knife from your grasp. You allow some movement, he lets his guard down for a split second and you kick his legs from underneath him. He drops down and you drop onto him, straddling his waist, knife pointing into his jugular vein. The other knife pokes his side.

“I suggest you don’t try that again.” You hiss, digging the point of the blade under his jaw. The man is shaking, staring up at you with dark blue eyes. You won’t actually stab him. At least not yet…..

“Roll him over.” A gruff voice calls out above you. You twist. The Mandalorian is standing there, visor tipped down to look at you. Blood stains the beskar. He has a blaster pointed at the man's head. You roll off the man, and he rolls over, subdued now the Mandalorian is here.

Mando leans down and cuffs him before dragging him onto his feet. You jump up. Knives sheathed in their holders. “Follow me.” Mando says, before marching the man down the alleys towards the docking bays.

You slip into the shadows again following behind the Mandalorian, listening to the man beg and plead for Mando to reconsider. Mando stays quiet.

The alleys are darker on this side of town, there’s barely any light filtering down from the Main Street. You can hear whispered voices in the darkened doorways. Mando’s armour glints in what little light there is. The bounty is loud, pleading for his life. You clutch the hilts of your knives again. Somethings wrong. You can sense it. Mando turned onto a brighter alley towards the Main Street.

A soft thud up ahead has you unsheathing your knives, still hidden in the darkness of the shadows. A man steps out of a door, his back is facing you. You can see from his posture he is holding a gun. Mando hasn’t noticed, the bounty is struggling, failing his arms around and kicking his legs out.

You rush forward, a blaster shot ringing out. You see Mando recoil with shock. Helmet twisting to see where the shot came from.

You glance back at Mando when he turns around. The unreadable darkness of the visor hides any reaction from you. The body of the assailant slumps to the ground, your knife sticking out of their back. You stand behind their fallen body, taking a few deep breaths. You can feel Mando watching as you tug the blade out of the man's back. You roll him over, his head lolling to the side. The quarry in Mandos’ grip is suddenly silent. Any hope of escape thwarted.

You quickly rifle through the mans pockets, trying to find an ID or something to ascertain his identity. When you find nothing you stand up, wiping your knife on his jacket, clearing the blood off it.

“Let’s go.” You step over the dead man's body. You see Mando roughly tugging the quarry up and starts to march him back to the ship. You slip back into the shadows. Watching and guarding his back.

The docking bays appear in view, everyone in the street moves out of the way for the blood covered Mandalorian marching a prisoner in front of him. Mando pulls up next to Bay 54, the door slides open.

You visibly relax, knives sheathed back on your thighs. You step into the bay behind him. A behemoth of a ship greets you. All dark and twisted metal with twin thrusters.

“Nice ship Mando.” He grunts in acknowledgment, mind preoccupied with the task at hand. He opens the hull of the ship with a button on his sleeve, the ramp slamming down with a thump. He drags the quarry up, and you wait sheepishly at the bottom suddenly unsure of if he needs you to follow.

You can hear the quarry screaming and pleading, and then the hiss of a carbonite machine. Then silence.

You sit on the edge of the ramp. You felt flat. The adrenaline that had coursed through you all night was fading, tiredness washing over you.

A small coo sounded from behind you. You twisted to see a little green creature tottering towards you on unstable feet. You knelt down to greet it.

“Hey there little fella!” The kid held his little hands out, you reached down and scooped him up. The kid giggled, eyes looking up at you.

“I’m sorry. I turned around and he was gone.” Came a voice from the top of the ramp.

“It’s no worries.” You stroked the top of the kids head. “He’s very cute.”

The Mandalorian watched you interact. You were aware of the feeling of eyes on you, and when you looked up the beskar helmet was watching you intently. The Mandalorian held his arms out and you placed the baby back in his arms.

“You are still in danger.” The gruff voice announced. You nodded solemnly.

“What can I do?”. You slipped the comms unit out of your ear and handed it back to the Mandalorian. He tucked it away. “Can I outrun them?”

He shook his head. “No. They’ll just keep sending people after you.”

“Who are they?”

“I don’t know. But they’re rich enough to keep sending assassins.”

You groaned. What could you do? You can’t run across the galaxy forever…

“You can fake your death.” The metallic voice broke your train of thought. He paused as if carefully considering his next words. “You can help me and help look after the child.”

You didn’t say a word, you just raised an eyebrow at him. Stay with the Mandalorian?

“You have until sunrise to decide. I leave then.”

He turned to step back into the hull.

“Wait!” He stops but doesn’t turn round. “What about my ship?”

“Sell it, and we’ll discuss the arrangements tomorrow.” And with that he disappeared into the hull. You stepped off the ramp, the flat feeling being replaced with a feeling of dread.

Your decision, as it turned out, was made for you.

You could smell the fire before you saw it. The sharp smell of jet fuel burning was unmistakable. The fire sirens wailing out, and flashing lights lined your path back to your bay. Instinctively you knew whose ship was burning.

You sprinted to the door of your bay. You didn’t get a chance to step in before you felt the heat. You stared in shock. Your ship was in flames. A giant blazing ball of heat. You let out a half choked sob. The fire crackled and popped, metal burning and wires melting inside. The smell of burning fuel singed your nose hairs, burning your eyes, and throat. The fire brigade pushes past you, trailing a hose. They dowsed your ship with foam, as you watched in horror as the blackened nose of your ship came into view. Everything was destroyed. You felt tears prickle in your eyes, from the heat or sadness you weren’t sure.

You swallowed. Slowly backing away from the hellish scene of your life burning in front of you. You slid to the floor, your heart sinking. Your whole life is gone. All your  possessions. You slam your fist into the dust. Why?

Who? Was your next question. With nowhere to go you went to find the only familiar face (or rather helmet) on this giant dusty planet. The walk back to Bay 23 was cut short when you collided with a rather solid metal chest.

“I saw the smoke.” He muttered. You stared up at him, eyes wet with tears. You let out a sob. Mando stayed still as you cried into his beskar armor. You were so distraught you didn’t really register the hand rubbing gently circles onto your back.

“Come on. Let’s leave.” Mando’s voice was calm. You sniffed, and brushed your tears away with the back of your hand.

You trudged behind him back to his ship, unaware of the tears streaming down your face. You didn’t feel like this was a choice. You felt like a caged animal being forced into a new pen.

Mando showed you to the ‘fresher, indicating that you should wash. You stripped off, pulling the shower drapes around and stood under the warm spray rinsing the dust, dirt and soot off your body. Undoing the plaits in your hair you washed that too, borrowing the Mandalorians soap.

Tears still escaped and you felt a sob well up in your chest. You let yourself sink to the floor of the fresher, crying in heaving gasps. You don’t know how long you sat on the floor, but the water was cold when you finally regained some composure.

Stepping out you find a towel and some clothes folded neatly on a shelf. He must have heard you cry. And if you were honest, you didn’t care. You dried yourself and dressed, stepping out into the cold hull. The clothes were big, but soft and warm.

The Mandalorian stood in the hull waiting for you, clutching the little green creature. He gestured to a cot in the wall. “Sleep.” He passed you a soft blanket, you took it gladly, and clambered into the cot.

Wrapping the blanket around you, you curled up in a ball. The cot door slid shut, plunging you into darkness. When you closed your eyes images of your burning ship flashed in your mind. You felt the tears burn beneath your eyelids. You let out a half choked sob, curling up tighter into a ball.

You don’t know how long you cried for, but at some point you finally drifted to sleep.

Poe Dameron x Princess!Reader

Summary: Poe refuses to agree with General Organa’s decision when she invites royalty to advise the Resistance. Despite his protests, Leia trusts him with her safety during an undercover mission. Maybe there’s a chance to change his misgivings of their new guest.

The following weeks after your last argument were far too busy for either of you to bother with an apology.

Poe kept to himself in hopes of avoiding you altogether, which wasn’t too hard to do with the recent developments regarding the information he had returned with.

A good amount of research revealed the data collected required a password to access. Poe was frustrated, so many of his best pilots had risked their lives for information they could not use.

There was a glimmer of hope, however, when Connix obtained the identity of a man who could give them the password. His profile indicated he was a senator with great influence in politics and a favorite among First Order sympathizers. Leia had hoped the efforts of her best spies would succeed in retrieving what they needed, but Leif was highly selective in the people he wished to associate with and none could gain his support.

Discouraged by their latest attempts, Leia decided to focus their attention elsewhere. The senator clearly would be of no help and they needed to find allies as quickly as possible.

Poe had been sent to seek support and assumed General Organa’s request for a meeting would give him more associates to find.

He wasted no time in reaching her office and stepped inside.

“You wanted to see me, General?”

Leia briefly met his gaze before finishing a scan of the report on her datapad.

“Come in, Poe.”

Poe sat down across from her, noticing a slight frown as she closed the reports in front of her.

“Everything okay?”

Leia sighed. “Help has been harder to find these days. We’ve sent word to any allies we could think of, but none have offered their support.”

The lack of support was taking a toll on Leia, that much was certain to Poe. He was willing to help her in any way he could, even if his options were impractical.

“What if we tried again?”

There was no question what Poe was proposing. The password was no longer considered a priority, but it clearly had not been forgotten. If they could access the information, it would provide a chance to claim victory in the war against the First Order.

Leia shook her head. “We’ve sent some of our best spies to investigate. I’m afraid nothing can change Leif’s mind to help us.”

“I can do it, General.”  

 She raised her eyebrow, clearly not convinced by his assurance.

“Poe, you’re one of our best pilots, I’m not afraid to admit that. But you and I both know you’re far too charismatic to work undercover.”

Poe grinned at her words. “You make it sound like’s that’s a bad thing.”

She chuckled, finally allowing herself a moment as his friend.

“Let me try,” he pressed again.  

Leia considered his words. She trusted him, but she was right in worrying for his safety in this particular mission.

“If I agree to this, you would need to work closely with a partner of my choosing. Can you do that?”  

Poe didn’t hesitate in his answer. “Of course, General.”

“Good. I’ve already spoken to Y/N and she’s agreed to join you on your mission.”

“What?”

“She has a certain history with the senator, from what I’ve gathered.” Poe detected an unfriendly tone in her voice, but didn’t dare question the history between you and the senator. “I’m sending her to meet with him and I need you to make sure she’s safe. Leif will question your appearance, which is why you will introduce yourself as Y/N’s fiancé.”

Poe furrowed his eyebrows, unable to understand the need for such a charade.

“This man is not to be trusted. He’s hurt Y/N in the past, and I have no doubt he would do it again if given the chance. I know the two of you have had your differences, but I need you to protect her. Can you do that?”

Poe considered his options. He recognized the importance of this mission and decided he would not argue with Leia’s decision.

He could only hope this mission would go by quickly.

You were grateful for the silence during your trip to Coruscant.

It allowed you a moment to pacify your worries, though it was becoming more and more difficult to do as you neared your destination.

You had considered asking Leia to send someone else in your place, but you knew it would not have made a difference. You were the only one familiar with Leif, and you knew the information he guarded was vital to the Resistance.

“We’re here.”

The sound of Poe’s voice interrupted your thoughts.

He hadn’t bothered making any conversation during your trip. You knew he hadn’t been too enthusiastic to work with you, but you also suspected leaving BB-8 had affected him greatly.

He had argued with Leia, of course, and hoped she would allow his companion to join the adventure. But it was far too risky, and so he was forced to leave his friend behind in the care of Snap.

Once the ship was secured on a landing platform, you decided it was best to find a nearby hotel and rest before tomorrow’s meeting.

It didn’t take long to find one and you were immediately greeted by an older man.

“Good evening, travelers.”

“Good evening,” you replied. “Do you have any rooms available?”

“Of course. We have a wonderful honeymoon suite.”

Your eyes widened at the man’s assumption. You caught Poe struggling to hide his smile as he saw your reaction.

He wrapped an arm around your shoulders, clearly unfazed by the older man’s notion. “That sounds great. Doesn’t it, honey?”

It took every amount of strength not to step on Poe’s foot again. You could only nod in response.

“Wonderful!” said the old man. “Let me guide you to your room.”

Poe extended his arm to you and you did not hesitate in purposefully bumping into him as you walked past him.

The décor of the hotel calmed you, and you marveled at the blue ornaments lining the ivory walls. It was a welcome distraction from the bright lights outside the windows.

The old man stopped at a dark blue wooden door. “Here we are. I do hope you’ll find it your liking. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate in asking.”

“Thank you very much.”

He bowed his head and left.

Pushing the door open, you gasped at the beauty of the room. While you appreciated the elegance of the palace you had grown up in, you couldn’t deny how comforting the room felt.

“What do you think, sweetheart?”  

Well, almost comforting.

You didn’t dare question the blush you felt hearing Poe’s nickname.  Ignoring his question, you decided it was best to unpack your bags.

“I’ve already sent a message to Leif,” you replied, hoping to change the subject. “He’ll be expecting us tomorrow evening.”

Poe hummed in response and dropped onto the bed, not even aware of your glare.

“What are you doing?”

“Sleeping.”

“Can’t you sleep on the couch?”

Poe watched you, quickly recognizing your reluctance. “What’s the matter, princess? Afraid you won’t be able to resist me?”

You scoffed at the mere thought of his suggestion.

“Commander Dameron, I’d rather spend a night with rathtars than allow myself to surrender to your charms.”

His mess of curls perked at your words and he grinned. “You think I’m charming?”

A frustrated groan left your lips before you disappeared into the bathroom, slamming the door.

You could only hope this mission would go by quickly.

guess who’s back!

it’s been like a week but i am BACK BABY! as you can guess i have mixed feelings about that entire series, which were amplified by the fact that i actually went to that game - yes, game 4 - as a (slightly early) birthday present from my brother. this is truly just 2.3k words of me being emo and getting personal, but it helped me process everything. and sorry for the lack of a read more but i’m on mobile lmao

i made it clear to both family and friends that i wanted this series to be a close one, for the home team to win each game, and for it to be a hard fought series that shows just how good both of these teams are. (maybe this wasn’t as clear on tumblr, but the decision to step away was made abruptly, though i’m very glad i did it.) that, well, didn’t happen. the canes are a great team, and their success wasn’t a fluke. don’t even try to suggest that. but this series didn’t work for them, for reasons that i really don’t know but may be revealed with time. who knows. regardless, it was a fantastic run and while i wish the ending wasn’t so bitter, i’m so proud of this team and all that they accomplished this season. the future is bright, and this time “next year will be better” isn’t just a hope - it’s a promise.

i really wanted them to score a goal, though. i love tuukka, and i want him to win those two trophies so badly, but i was really hoping he’d give up a goal. obviously, the canes’ chances of coming back to win the series were slim to none, but one last goal would’ve been a way to end the season on a somewhat promising note. and it’s weird and a bit sad that i went to 3 home games this season, and didn’t even get to hear raise up in person - two shutouts and a whalers night for which brass bonanza played instead.

that’s not the main reason, though. i was at this game with my brother, whose main team is the canes, who just got back into hockey late last season, opting to root for his local team over his childhood rangers and getting to see such an incredible run. he just wanted to see a goal to ease the blow, and i was right there with him. it was expected, though, and he’s not crushed or anything. he went to some pretty special games this season, including both the first storm surge and the first playoff win, and he knows that the rest of our family is happy. and really, that’s what it all comes back to - family.

the first bruins game that i have even the vaguest of memories of watching is the 2010 winter classic against the flyers. i’m not even 100% sure if i watched any of it; i just remember asking my dad why they were playing outside and catching glimpses of the game while he watched. he and my mom, once diehard bruins fans, had become fairweather fans upon moving to north carolina in 2003. the bruins, quite frankly, sucked, and games were rarely on tv. meanwhile, the patriots were quite the opposite. the bruins soon started to improve and began to creep back into our lives. i remember the 2011 cup finals, and not knowing a single player other than zdeno chara - the Tall One - and tim thomas - the Brick Wall. i don’t remember much else, but i was there in some capacity.

then came 2013. a series against the leafs. a historical game 7 comeback from a 4-1 deficit. i remember watching bits and pieces of this game on two different TVs - first the main one downstairs, where my dad was watching, only because it was the playoffs. he didn’t watch or care about regular season hockey - i didn’t even know there’d just been a lockout. when he gave up on this game, he went upstairs to go to bed and turned on the tv for background noise while i hung around to say goodnight. we were almost done when nathan horton scored the first goal, and from there, we watched history unfold. i was losing my mind - was this what i’d been missing out on?

from there, i watched the rest of the playoffs, and i haven’t looked back since. first i watched this young undersized rookie defenseman by the name of torey krug take the rangers by storm, then i watched the bruins hand the penguins‘ asses to them in a swift 4-game sweep that began with a shutout on my birthday, and then i watched the bruins lose a hard-fought series against the chicago racistlogos in the blink of an eye. it was a rollercoaster of a postseason, and i spent most of my free time learning about the game and my new favorite player, who i must regretfully admit was seguin. every game brought me closer to my dad, as before the game 7 comeback, i’d never join him to watch sports, or anything, really. in turn, it allowed him to reconnect with the sport he’d once loved most of all.

the next season was a good one as well: my first full season, the first game i ever attended in person, and the bruins winning the president’s trophy. that season ended in disappointment, but it was a good run, and i grew an appreciation for every single member of that bruins team. (nowadays, i guess that attitude is what the kids would call my brand.)

halfway through that season, i discovered hockey tumblr. i didn’t really make content or liveblog or even talk in the tags, and i never made any lasting connections, but still, it was a community that i greatly enjoyed. it also opened my eyes to other teams, and i started to experiment with the whole having more than one team thing - yeah, those were my stars fan days, among other questionable choices that aren’t important right now. this is also where the canes first came into my life, though not as a true second team until much more recently. things were changing, and not always for the better.

the 2014-15 season was fun, though i wasn’t able to watch as many games due to not knowing about r/NHLStreams or anything of that nature. regardless, the bruins just simply weren’t very good, and the season ended in disappointment. a few months later, hockey became very disappointing for reasons i won’t get into, and this coincided with my second emo phase (see: my current url). i ended up jumping ship for bandom tumblr and the life of a panic! at the disco stan.

still, i kept up with the 2015-16 season a little. it kinda sucked, but it was fine. i still loved the team - i just wasn’t really invested anymore. and maybe it was for the best given how busy school was that year. the next season went much the same, only this time, the bruins made the playoffs, i had just about given up on using tumblr at all, and there was this new kid on the team named sean kuraly.

the 2017 playoffs were odd. i hadn’t watched many games that season, and i hadn’t watched a bruins playoff game since the last time i was truly invested in hockey. still, it wasn’t like a switch flipped and i suddenly stanned the bruins again. i spent all the games in that series playing pokémon moon while occasionally glancing at the screen to see what was happening. i wasn’t even truly playing the game; i’d already beaten it and was merely trying my hand at shiny hunting a jangmo’o by hatching dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens of eggs, nicknaming them, and randomly trading them over the internet. it was mindless enough to pay attention, and pay attention i did.

it was kind of like the rangers series, on a smaller and less successful scale. much like torey krug before him, sean kuraly came out with a bang and made bruins fans love hockey again - or maybe i’m just projecting. regardless, you know he scored the 2OT winner, and you know about the kuraleap. i don’t remember how many jangmo’os named sean, kuraly, and sean kuraly i traded to the lucky people of pokémon sun and moon wondertrade, but the humber was definitely higher than 52. the bruins did lose the series, but i was interested again.

when the 2017 draft happened, i felt a special connection to it by virtue of these boys being the right age to be in the same high school graduating class as me. this draft piqued my interest in a way no other since 2014 truly had (unpopular opinion on 2015, i know, especially considering my favorite player was drafted fourteenth that year), and you know what? it had been a few months since i’d been active on tumblr, but i searched a few tags and started peaking back at hockey tumblr. i was almost convinced i should dive back in and redo my account for the second time, but i had college orientation to worry about, and by the time i returned, the motivation was lost.

until the 2017-18 home opener. you all know i love jake debrusk, and you probably know he scored his first nhl goal in that game (alongside charlie mac). you’ve seen the video and/or gifs of his dad crying. but beyond all that, it was just a damn good game. i had so much fun watching it - in boston, no less, because finally, after all those years trapped in my hometown, i was where i wanted to be - that i just had to get involved with hockey tumblr again. watching on my own wasn’t going to be enough, i knew.

and so, tumblr user @david-pastrnak returned. honestly, that season was fun, but the first half felt like a blur - likely just because it was my first semester of college. i even went to my first bruins home game in november, and though it wasn’t a good one, it was fun. they picked up the season with a win against tampa on the day i met my favorite band, and somehow, that seemed important. soon i saw my first live bruins win on td garden ice, and even went to a few more games, during which i watched as my grandma grew to love hockey and the bruins, bringing us closer together. it was around this time that i truly embraced the hurricanes, too, and having that second team that i truly care about and love has made being a hockey fan so much fun. it was also around this time that i rediscovered my love for writing. things were changing for the better, but they were only getting started. even when the bruins lost in disappointing fashion to the lightning, i knew things were going to be okay - better, even.

the off-season was mostly uneventful, but towards the end and into the beginning of the season, i ended up in a few group chats with others on here. some of these are still active while others are not, but regardless, i connected with a lot more people, got better at making conversation, and, most importantly, found some of the best friends i’ve ever had. you don’t really expect to meet a lifelong friend on the internet, never mind several, but i’ve gotten incredibly lucky!

this season has been special. i started going to games more often, grew to care about every member of this team more than i’ve probably ever cared about the entire team, and made some incredible friends who i’m blessed to know. and beyond me, this season has been incredible. you know that if you’re reading this, so i won’t get into it all. there were ups and downs, there were moments we thought we’d be golfing in april, and now we’re going to the stanley cup final. the last time this happened, i had just started watching hockey and was still learning. i was also a literal child who still thought i was straight. a lot has changed since then, and somehow, this stanley cup final feels like a culmination of everything i’ve been through with and because of this team. winning the cup isn’t just about how happy it would make jake, how much tuukka deserves it, or whether sean would hand it to danton or vice versa. it’s not about watching to see who helps wags lift it without damaging his injured hand further. it’s not even about watching the look of pure joy on pasta’s face and thinking back to his draft day and my bold, unwarranted, yet correct claim that he would be one of, if not the best player to come out of the 2014 draft. no matter how much they mean to me, winning the cup isn’t about the players.

winning the cup this season would be a celebration of all the friends i’ve made, the stories we’ve shared, and the connections we’ve made. winning the cup would be a celebration of how much closer hockey has brought me to my family. shit, winning the cup would be a celebration of kureinen and all our fun memes because why the hell not?

winning the cup isn’t about the players, or the team, or the parade, or the bragging rights for fans of boston sports. winning the cup is about the deeply meaningful and even just the fun ways in which hockey and the community on here have positively impacted our lives.

and even if we don’t, it’s okay. this season has been by far the best i’ve ever watched, and no matter what happens, it’s one i’ll always remember.

but hey, if we do, i’ll get my first tattoo to commemorate it. speaking of playoff promises, from now on, i’m going to have to talk like anders bjork on here so checkurohhhhhhhh

So my work is super mind-numbing and soul-rending, and any time I can get a distraction from how shitty it is while I’m at work, I welcome it. I’m not, like, friend-friends with my coworkers, but there are some people I can talk with about stuff so that I can get a mental escape from the shittiness of my work.

Often, some sort of media’s brought up. One person at my work watches a lot of CW shows. A lot. It sometimes makes me wonder if some demonic bargain was struck once from their seeming undying devotion to watching the channel’s shows. We’ve talked about a lot of shows/movies over the time I’ve been there (my tenure at work far, far too long for my liking, but alas), and we’d kind of exhausted  all the common links of what we’ve both watched.

So, at my own peril, I decided to take a bit of a dive into a universe I had long, long since left in my rearview mirror: The Vampire Diaries Universe.

Or, well, I’ve still ditched the main show, but I was lured into giving the spin-offs a shot. 

Let’s just say that I was...a little surprised (more thoughts beneath the cut, because after two binge-watch sessions, I feel a need to at least arrange my thoughts so I’ll know what to say this week when my coworker brings up the shows)

I was told to watch the series in order, so I started with The Originals. This was my coworker’s favourite show of the trio from that universe, which had me hopeful that maybe it wouldn’t share some of TVD’s early missteps, since they could take what was hopefully learned and improved upon (I’m only speculating there, I never watched past mid-S2 and it never actually got better within that duration), and make a stronger, snappier pilot episode.

To say I was dismayed, but not surprised, would probably be pretty accurate. If you ever take the dive, get ready for a lot of Awkward Dramatic Poses, they’re overwhelmingly, relentlessly common in this show (especially with one of the mains, Elijah). 

I made it 5 episodes in, and none of the characters have any meat on their bones. They’re pretty much all cardboard cutouts, or so shallowly written that they may as well be. There’s the occasional bit of quality acting despite the writing (Charles Michael Davis, Joseph Morgan, and Daniella Pineda seem like the stronger actors at this point, everyone else is real meh). 

Overall, I was not impressed. Given the narrative pieces they were working with, I wanted to be intrigued and compelled to continue, but...it just didn’t grip me in the least. It’s not a horrible show, but those first five episodes didn’t really show much promise of it getting better, and they had plenty of time to manifest and nurture that tiny glimmer of hope I was looking for (pun intended). When the main characters are seemingly invincible, and the non-immortal pregnant main they’re protecting is also rendered immortal by the kid inside her, that kind of eliminates pretty much any real stakes involved outside of internal ones, and I didn’t see enough anything to suggest the show was up for handling that kind of character depth. I didn’t feel conflicted in the slightest from moving on after 5.

Legacies is the newest spin-off. Let me tell you, after five episodes of The Originals, I was not looking forward to this show. I came in with a bias, and it did not manage to change that with the pilot episode. In fact, I’d argue the pilot for Legacies was much worse. Almost laughably bad. Like, some of the worst writing I’ve seen on a CW show, and not in the ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ way that can sometimes be charming.

I could buy the whole “hybrid” thing in The Originals. It’s a bit much, and a little over the top in its state as a frustratingly predictable plot device in T.O., but I can understand the inclusion of it, lore-wise. It’s certainly not the first, and if I can tolerate it in those Kate Beckinsale-led movies I can’t recall the names of, then I could manage some tolerance there.

So I was stunned and frustrated as all hell that Legacies was seemingly centered around a supposed “Tribrid”. I couldn’t begin to imagine how annoying a character she would be. Y’all know I am generally a supporter of Mary Sue characters, but I’m not really one to appreciate characters who are so supremely powerful. It was tremendously difficult with T.O., and in the pilot, it was difficult there as well with Hope. Still, aside from her and the lead pasty dude, there was a cast of also-ran characters who seemed moderately compelling. The pilot is still one of the worst hours of television I’ve ever seen, but it could only go up from there.

And thank gosh it did. Monster-of-the-Week formatting really helped give time and space to develop the whole cast, and it also didn’t hurt that Hope’s tribrid perfection only ever showed up in minor, predictable ways. Usually in finishing the MotW, but as with any adventure, the journey is the point. There’s a bit of problem solving, a bit of character drama and development, a bit of foreshadowing of future issues and developments. It’s balanced. As for Hope, after the pilot, she’s largely allowed to just be a student at the school, and the show benefits greatly from that. Her being a ‘tribrid’ focuses less on how perfectly awesome she is, and more with how the headmaster’s favoritism for her (negatively) affects the rest of the school. She’s cast in the “I’m a loner, everyone who ever loved me is dead/gone” stereotype, but that’s largely framed as an internal perspective, and maybe the view from a few students rather than everyone (seriously, everyone seems to have a bit of a crush on her, while she seems woefully oblivious in general). 

She’s got attachment issues, but they’re handled with some semblance of nuance here, you’re not always blatantly hit over the head with them like in T.O, with Klaus looking a solid 200 episodes worth of development away from any believable semblance of real progress. With Hope, there’s little shifts here and there, steps forward and backward. She’s young and learning, and while she seems powerful, she appears anything but invincible, and the rest of the cast is definitely out of their depth a good chunk of the time. The show’s dialogue can be real clunky at times, but the character progression clearly has a defter touch to it. What I guess I’m trying to say is there’s hope for improvement, really. 

And maybe The Originals set a really low bar for comparison, but at least they’ve learned from some of the mistakes of that show, it seems. They’re not stretching a single narrative over 22 or whatever episodes. It’s a shorter order, and there’s a lot of other major stuff going on for the characters to sink their teeth into (pun intended), giving them plenty of room to breathe and show the viewer why they matter, why we should be invested. Even early on, you get glimpses of their inner workings and struggles, and you see them, even if only usually in minor ways, confront them. 

It’s a largely likable group. I like watching shows where I’ll have at least a handful of characters to cheer on. Even the characters that grind my gears are ones I predict I’ll end up appreci-hating. There’s the seeds of a found family trope here, and I’m always here for that, so that intrigues me. I feared the worst, that there’d be similarly brooding dudes in this show like in the other two, but it’s not the case so far. The main pasty dude is actually physically useless and has the composure of an anxiety-riddled hamster, and he’s a better character for it. He’s just an ordinary, regular idiot, and he’s allowed to be, so even if he can rub me the wrong way a bit, he’s a breath of fresh air in comparison to the majority of male leads in supernatural-themed shows. 

Even the main het ship of the show isn’t something that hogs the show’s spotlight, it doesn’t follow the ‘will they/won’t they’ struggle like a lot. The speed at which they get together’s a bit forced given the characterization involved, but at the same time, they’re pretty young, so I can see it happening at that kind of age where I wouldn’t if they were a decade older and in the same situation. Aside from them, the show does have some wlw stuff going on, and you all know I’m generally here for that, so that’s a bit of a draw, too.

It’s also a show that doesn’t take itself entirely seriously, and has a little fun with its occasional ridiculous campiness, and I appreciate that, given most other shows of its ilk don’t. It reminds me a little of early Supernatural in tone, and I liked early Supernatural. It might not rise to those levels of quality, it might not be a show I’d wholeheartedly consider ‘good’ just yet, but I’ll continue watching. I’m 8 episodes in, and feeling alright about it.

”A little bird tells me you're planning to do something 'ill-advised'. Would this be a Geonosis, or rather a Vanqor kind of ill-advised?”

Anakin did not much enjoy being forced to guess which one of his consecutive mess-ups Obi-Wan meant by 'Geonosis', and why he seemed to think that his apprentice had at least made slightly better decisions on their plentiful misadventures on Vanqor. Should he take this as a compliment? Well, he didn't have time, and that was not the point anyway.

”I'm going back to Scipio,” Anakin answered truthfully, whirling around on the ramp to the Twilight. ”Right now.”

Obi-Wan nodded. ”So… the Scipio kind.”

”Very clever, Master,” Anakin sighed. ”Are you not going to ask why? Try to stop me… do what you do best.”

”Oh, I find that what I do best is give you advice.”

Anakin nodded slowly, drumming his fingers against the box of supplies he was holding, then gesturing with his other arm towards the ship.

”Can't you tell me on the way? The more the merrier. We can be arrest buddies again.”

Of course, the two of them had been arrest buddies plenty of times, but somehow, in the Scipio-gate, Obi-Wan's brief arrest had become a mere footnote, while Anakin's extended one had ended up the talk of the town. Curiously, Anakin no longer blamed his Master for the incident – having recently been made to face how his own boiling anger often contributed to situations escalating.

”I'll respectfully decline your kind invitation.”

Anakin narrowed his eyes at him. Obi-Wan appeared to be in a strange mood – he sounded almost jovial – as though he was, for once, feeling optimistic about something. Anakin was almost sorry he could only give him a tired look, preparing to sit through whatever wisdom the older Jedi had to provide today – and risk being found out before he could set off. But he could do this much for Obi-Wan.

Obi-Wan's features suddenly grew tenser.

”I sense so much anger in you. You know what Master Yoda says about that.”

”Fear… suffering… bad feelings. Bad things,” Anakin listed wearily, with somewhat loose vocabulary. He was suddenly starting to miss going to missions with Obi-Wan, and listen to his nagging about the immediate danger they were facing, instead of Anakin's character flaws. ”First thing he ever said to me.”

”And you remember what I usually tell you?”

”Harmony… control… I know the teachings, Master.”

”And you know what I'm telling you now?”

Anakin gave him a scowl, not greatly appreciating the structure of this conversation.

”What, Master?”

Obi-Wan pressed a thoughtful hand to his beard, casting Anakin a long gaze. There was something of a softness in his eyes.

”That perhaps… what you're feeling is not just anger.”

Anakin shifted. That was something new – and it seemed to strike something of a chord with him. His shoulders relaxed, and he inclined his head with cautious curiosity.

”Perhaps it is just what you said… a bad feeling.”

Anakin studied his master.

”Kinda like the one you had?”

”Yes…”

”And did that pass, Master?”

”Yes,” Obi-Wan said slowly. ”But only after it became reality.”

Anakin looked away. If Obi-Wan meant what he thought he meant, it wasn't something he had expected his Master to have sensed. The worst part was, Obi-Wan didn't know the details – Anakin didn't know the details. He must have only sensed his murderous rage, his darkness.

”The curious thing is,” Obi-Wan went on, ”I thought I felt something bigger – of greater consequence – than merely… whatever you did to that poor man.”

Anakin swallowed, as Obi-Wan mumbled something about Clovis still being alive, at least. Obi-Wan then hurried to clarify, as though it could help Anakin feel better, ”I only sensed your regret afterward. I was on my way to see you–” he momentarily stumbled upon his words. ”I know something happened. But I was not spying on you.”

But he had been on his way to see him on that day – apparently moments before Padmé had appeared and claimed first turn. Something of a bad feeling, indeed. Anakin tried to imagine how differently things would have played out if it had been Obi-Wan running into Clovis in the hangar and Obi-Wan staring at the busted control table.

”I'm getting sidetracked,” Obi-Wan said apologetically. ”What I'm saying is, I think this is something else. I can't seem to get a grasp on it… because, I think, it does not directly involve me. While you, the Chosen One,” he said the last words with an affectionate sneer, his tone strangely cheerful again, ”can feel the full impact of whatever will soon come to pass. But due to your… immaturity, you're mistaking it for anger at this person who has done very little to you.”

Anakin opened his mouth to speak, but Obi-Wan wouldn't let him.

”Yes, we all know he has caused plenty of trouble for your wife.”

For a second, Anakin started, before remembering he had risked everything in a throwaway joke not too long ago, and now Obi-Wan was at the very least in a position to give the two of them heart attacks for the rest of eternity. And again, he had no time for this.

Anakin rubbed his forehead, confused like never before.

”Let me get this straight. I am, once again, feeling too much for Jedi standards… but for once it's also good, because you think it's some kind of premonition?”

Obi-Wan paused. He seemed to be considering just how comfortably what he had said, and what Anakin was suggesting now, fit into the Jedi principles, and Master Yoda's views on premonitions and visions. Then he got on the ramp and walked over to Anakin, to place a gentle hand on his shoulder and look him in the eye.

”Search your feelings, Anakin. And if you can… do channel them into something good. Don't settle for just anger and fear. I know you're better than that.”

Anakin stared at him.

The Jedi Master then whirled around with one final look at his apprentice, and left without waiting for a response.

Padmé had often been accused of being a workaholic, but this time around she had thought she’d enjoy the bit of respite that her stepping down from the negotiations would bring. Instead she found herself quite uneasy after her call with Clovis, and not even 12 hours had passed before she contacted Bail again. The call barely got through, and she nearly had to press an ear to the speaker of her holo projector to be able to make out the familiar voice.

Bail spoke first, and with some rare, thinly veiled urgency.

“Padmé, I am so glad you called. I couldn’t get through to you from here. Padmé, something very odd is going on here. It has been two days, and we have yet to be presented with the new loan agreement. There is a very shady Separatist Representative staying at the–“

“What?” Padmé echoed. “The new Separatist contract is being negotiated at the same time?”

Bail nodded, almost drowning into the gray, rasping rain of interference.

“Yes... I was willing to let that – there is something – Representative Clovis does seem troubled – I wish I knew what it –“

With that, the signal was dead, and Padmé’s resurrection attempts proved futile.

Suddenly she felt guilty – she should have gone to Scipio. She would have gotten through to Clovis, whatever he was hiding. Hiding…

Padmé bit her lip. She had had enough of hiding. It was time for the truth to come out.

Teckla came in with some tea and imported Nabooian biscuits. Her expression indicated that she had overheard the conversation.

”My Lady…”

”I know, Teckla. Something very strange is going on.” The Senator gave her a trusting look. ”I know you're always up for another adventure, Teckla, but I'm sorry, I'm going to have to ask you to stay behind instead, and cancel all my appointments for the next few days. If it's urgent, please have Representative Binks cover for me.”

”Right away, My Lady.” She gave a bow and a warm smile. ”Good luck.”

”Anakin!” Padmé sprinted into the hangar, looking around for her husband’s freighter. She was surprised to find Anakin on his way to meet her. “Oh, I'm so glad you're still here,” she sighed, clasping both his hands in hers.

”I was about to take flight,” Anakin explained, “but then I sensed you… like really sensed you. Your urgency…”

”To come with you,” Padmé announced. “No, scratch that, to kidnap you.”

”Kidnap me?” Anakin echoed with sudden curiosity, smirking as though he had never heard of an idea more wonderful.

”Yeah, come on,” Padmé hurried, grabbing his wrist like a proper crook should, still panting. ”To my star skiff.”

”Wait, wait, wait –”

”I don't care what kind of lousy plan you've come up with. Mine is better. And frankly,” she gestured towards whatever barely functional scraps were left of the Twilight this week, ”so is my ship.”

”You'll… smuggle me to Scipio? Why? I thought you disapproved,” Anakin reminded her, following her outside and to her skyspeeder.

”I changed my mind,” she explained. ”I'll explain it when we reach hyperspace. And smuggling is the right word, yes.”

”What do you mean?”

”Well,” Padmé said, shoving him onto the speeder and grabbing the yoke, ”have I mentioned there is an anti-thermal-scanner compartment in the back of my ship?”

”What?” Anakin uttered. ”Why haven't you?”

”Now that I think of it, you specifically told me never to introduce you to any more of my ship's special features… after – ” She turned towards him momentarily, flushing and chuckling, ”ahem, do you remem–”

”Oh, that.” He gave a laughter, his nose scrunching up with either disgust or delight. ”No, that's not what I said.”

In hyperspace, Anakin listened to Padmé’s recount of the situation, her concerns, Bail’s messages and Clovis’ odd behavior - without interrupting, still a little incredulous that he was actually taking this risky and nonsensical trip with Obi-Wan’s blessing and his wife for company. But once she’d finished, he found himself only vaguely worried about the bigger picture - there was only so much room in his brain for politics and finances - and left with that one name he so despised.

“So… you’ll probably cross paths with Clovis again.”

Padmé did not look happy with his response.

“Anakin, it is my intention to ‘cross paths’ with Clovis – and demand answers."

Anakin gave a vague nod.

“And I need your help,” she then added, to Anakin’s surprise. Padmé momentarily took her eyes off the display screen and focused on her words. “Something for your own little excursion. Look, I don’t know much about these things, but since you are breaking into their holo tower… would you maybe be able to… spy on any covert networks?”

Anakin gave a nod again, an enthusiastic one. If there were any covert networks to be found, he had doubt in his ability to hack into them.

“Again, I thought you disapproved.”

Padmé shook her head.  

“I’ve been a major hypocrite, Anakin. You said it yourself. I do this all the time – unauthorized missions, breaking less than useful laws in the name of justice. And since it doesn’t look like there is going to be any new contract for you to ruin–“

“Hey!”

They gave a hearty laughter in unison, and Padmé playfully struck him on the arm, rather more forcefully than needed.

A long silence followed, and the air between them tightened again. But Anakin knew it was mostly the Force radiating off him and his darkened thoughts. Darkened – but no longer dark.

”Padmé,” Anakin said in a quiet voice, ”You know what I was going to ask of you?”

”What, Anakin?”

He shifted in his seat.

”To…” He looked away. “If I… If I'm ever about to snap again, and you happen to be there, to… give me a signal. To make me stop.”

Padmé was silent. Engine sounds filled the cockpit.

“But now I understand…” he drew a deep breath, feeling like he had already forgotten whatever Obi-Wan had said to him this morning. “I can’t ask that of you. You might not be there. And a Jedi is supposed to be able to control his emotions."

Keeping her eyes on the screen, but gently stealing a glance at her husband, Padmé softly laid her hand on his shoulder, gliding it along the side of his arm.

”Let me teach you an alternative to that Jedi philosophy of 'controlling your emotions'. You see, the emotions are always going to be there. But you can control your impulses. Your actions are never an inevitability."

She smiled at him.

"Too lecture-y?"

"It's a nice change of pace from Obi-Wan."

This time, it was Anakin's turn to that fall asleep on the journey. Padmé was reminded of Obi-Wan’s extended nap on their first fateful adventure on the banking planet. Before she had married Anakin, she had actually been under the impression that the Jedi did not sleep. Even now - it was a strange thing to witness. Chest moving up and down on his seat, Anakin looked almost too tranquil and innocent to be a General of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Nearing the end of the hyperspace journey, Padmé’s holo projector activated. Bail appeared as a bare wavering outline to inform her that the signal was currently so unstable, he’d have to keep this brief. He had just notified the Supreme Chancellor that the new loan agreement was a complete disaster – with increased interest rates for the Republic, as well as completely unreasonable terms and conditions. Meanwhile, the Separatists were to be given a contract with decreased loan interest, and complete forgiveness for their past transgressions, and – something that Padmé could no longer make out, as the connection shut down with a scratch.

Padmé took her hand off the yoke and plunged it into the ornate composition on her head, scratching at her scalp. This was worth ruining a perfect hairstyle for.

Whilst jumping universes using the Dimension Cannon, Rose meets an old friend, and one she has yet to meet, and finds out she will unknowingly give them a wonderful gift. In return, she's given something that could keep them all together even when they couldn't be further apart.

You gotta love Rose Tyler and her Dimension Cannon. In this story, it helps Martha keep fighting during the Year That Never Was, and helps Martha and Mickey find each other. It’s so well written, too.

Falser Than Vows Made In Wine (Rosaline Capulet/Benvolio Montague, Still Star Crossed) AO3 [In-progress]

In which Romeo and Juliet try to be impulsive and romantic, Rosaline and Benvolio get drunk and stupid, and what happens in Vegas... does NOT stay in Vegas.

This. Fic. Is. FANTASTIC. All of the characters are perfectly written, and the story retains the same super slow burn quality of the show, and it’s perfection. Gotta love a good Vegas Wedding AU.

Family Pond ‘Verse (Amy Pond/Rory Williams and 11/River Song, Doctor Who) AO3

This is a beautiful AU series in which Amy and Rory have another child after River, and River and the Doctor also have a kid later down the line. It is beautiful and adorable and just perfection, and features appearances from several other Who characters like Martha and Mickey.

I’ll Find You (Bellamy Blake/Clarke Griffin, The 100) AO3 [Complete]

In every life she's granted, Clarke loves Bellamy Blake's eyes.

Every time Clarke Griffin is reincarnated, she finds Bellamy Blake. They don't always fall in love, they don't always end up together, but they find each other all the same.

I think this is such a great reincarnation fic-- they never remember each other, but no matter how shitty a situation they’re in (War, child cancer patients, and more) they always cross paths. It’s a cool exploration of the way lives can cross, and it even follows history, with an early portion existing in the days of the Roman Empire while later portions chronicle post and pre Ark life. Basically, it’s so good!

Just A Pack of Sweets (Martha Jones/Mickey Smith, Doctor Who) AO3 [Complete]

You know you wondered, and if you do the maths, it's only six weeks from the day Mickey and Martha meet to the day when Martha is said to be on her honeymoon.

It takes eleven years of bad timing and miscommunication, plus one called off engagement, but eventually they figure it out. Austin/Ally through the years. "Austin is her best friend. Having him in her life is more important than anything else ... even if it means having her heart broken from time to time." Complete.

This slightly AU fic is just the right amount of angsty that you have to keep reading, and of course, these two idiots are perfectly in character to boot.

Find on A03 here.  —— Killian hadn’t seen his half brother since their shaky reconciliation and Liam’s reunion with Nemo, but he had seen to it, with a copious amount of gold doubloons, that their stay at Granny’s was covered indefinitely. It was the least he could do. 

The wind seemed to come and go in spurts, at times nipping through Killian’s leather jacket before dying back down to a light caress across his cheek. Whenever he could spare a moment in the day, he came to check on his ship. These days, those free moments were fewer and farther between. Even so, he managed to make it over to her at least once a week. 

  It was odd, forging time in his days to check in briefly on a ship that had been his home for centuries. Once in a while, he would linger, take up his old place at her helm and grasp the spokes of her wheel in his hand, or take his time swabbing the deck alone. It was cathartic work, despite the strain it earned his back, and he enjoyed caring for his ship with his own touch. Still, easier were the days when he had a whole crew at his disposal to take care of the more mundane chores. Henry was the only one who offered to help, or agreed to help when asked. Most of the time, the old pirate took care of it all, himself. 

  Today was one such day where he had come to spend some extra time alone on the Jolly Roger. When sailing regularly, deck swabbing was a daily occurrence. These days, with the ship sitting idly in the harbor, it was really only necessary after a storm, or a particularly choppy day when the waves could reach high enough to leave salt residue on the main deck. If he didn’t get to it in time, within a day or so at most, the old wood would start to show extra wear, in spite of its enchanted state. This was not something Killian would allow. 

As he strode across the docks, his ship looming before him, his mind was elsewhere, untethered and darting between memories. Dark circles stubbornly took up residence under his eyes, betraying to anyone who looked at him how little sleep he had been getting lately. Rest eluded him, and when it came, it was fitful. Every time he closed his eyes, he could see that face staring back at him.  “I swear on my son’s life. I just want to get home to my family.” There was a familiar twist in his gut. 

Abruptly, a male voice called down from the Jolly Roger’s deck, “I asked the harbor master which ship belonged to the infamous Captain Hook.” 

Killian tensed, not recognizing the voice at first. He paused at the ship’s loading ramp, raising his hand to shield his eyes as he squinted against the sun. Liam the second’s smiling face came into view, and Killian relaxed visibly. 

  Liam’s hair was tousled, the longer strands of it whipping into his face as the wind picked up, and he raised a hand and ran his fingers through it. He was leaning on the wooden rails of the ship facing the docks and offered his half-brother a small smile.

"He told me it was the ‘old wooden one that looks like it’s up to no good,’” Liam continued, still smirking. “Figured it was this one. Although, I was expecting darker sails." 

Killian scaled the ship’s boarding ramp in a few long, well-practiced strides. "Aye, you found her,” he said. “Welcome aboard the Jolly Roger, mate." 

Liam chuckled appreciatively at the name, as if he hadn’t been expecting the ship to be christened anything else. "A pirate through and through." 

Killian gave a half shrug. "It was fitting at the time. Now I can’t imagine her called anything else." 

Liam nodded, letting his gaze drift back to the sea. He was still leaning on the railing, looking perfectly at ease, as if he had been there all afternoon. Which, Killian thought, was perfectly plausible. He wouldn’t have put it past Liam to have investigated the entire ship from top to bottom already. 

"Did you inspect her, then?” Killian asked. “Everything ready to sail?" 

Liam gave a half smile, as if he had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. "I found where you stash your mountain of rum barrels, if that’s what you’re wondering." 

Killian laughed freely, shaking his head. "Not what I meant at all, mate. But, you’re welcome to crack open a barrel anytime you see fit. What’s mine is yours." 

A thought hung in the air, unspoken by either of them. Killian’s mind drifted immediately to their shared father and the fate that had befallen him, and Liam’s jaw clenched just a fraction. He cleared his throat once and offered Killian a short, "Thanks." 

They were silent for a minute, each staring out at the tranquil water of the Maine port. It was a calm day, with a brilliant, unobscured sun and only a whisper from the wind every now and again. It was a perfect day, it seemed, to investigate your long-lost half-brother’s antique pirate ship. 

After a while, Liam cleared his throat. They certainly hadn’t fallen into the easy banter Killian and David now shared, but the fact that Liam had sought him out meant something. In a town as small as Storybrooke, it was virtually impossible to avoid someone forever, especially someone who attracted as much trouble as Killian seemed to. He knew they would run into each other eventually, but he was hardly expecting Liam to be the one to seek him out first, let alone appear unannounced on his ship. It was a pleasant surprise. 

"So, I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m here,” Liam started. 

“You’re welcome here anytime,” Killian said promptly, without a trace of false hospitality. He met Liam’s gaze for a moment, the younger man’s eyes searching his, before Liam offered a small smile and a nod. 

“Thanks,” Liam said, shifting a bit against the ship’s rail. “I just thought I’d come by and thank you properly for taking care of our rooms, at the inn. Nemo and I… really appreciate it." 

"It’s the least I can do,” Killian said. “I may not have held the knife, but Nemo was only injured because of me.” His gaze flit to sea, scanning the horizon briefly before meeting his brother’s eyes again. “Besides, I recall all too well being an outsider in this town. I’m still not fully acclimated to its many quirks, but at least I had my ship." 

Liam turned, resting his back on the rail, and took a moment to survey the Jolly Roger’s deck. "She really is something,” he murmured. “They certainly don’t make them like this anymore." 

"Aye,” Killian says, with more than a hint of pride. 

The two brothers stood in silence again, and it seemed to be getting easier to do so. For his part, Killian had been thinking of Liam the second nearly as much as he thought of Liam the first. 

  Despite the looming threat of death that seemed to follow his true love like a shadow, and all the insanity that was Storybrooke on a weekly basis, his mind had been coming back to his younger brother nearly every day. Often, he wondered how he and Nemo were assimilating, how Nemo was healing. He assumed this was why he had yet to see either of them around town, with Liam surely taking care of Nemo at the inn. 

After a minute, Killian felt Liam watching him. He shifted on the balls of his feet, not quite sure of what to say. This was the most time they had ever spent together alone without one of them throwing a punch or whipping out a knife. Perhaps they weren’t ready for normal conversations, or standing in the same vicinity, for that matter. 

  His mind grasped for something else to say, returning empty-handed. Even innocuous comments on the weather evaded him. The sleepless nights were beginning to weigh on him, and his mind felt fogged, bogged down by the thoughts–memories–he couldn’t seem to hold at bay, guilt contorting his stomach in constant knots.

“Are you okay?”

Killian jumped, jerked out of his wayward thoughts. Liam was staring at him, looking concerned. 

Killian forced a smile. “Of course, mate. Why?”

Liam frowned. “You look…” he started, lips pursing as he paused to think of the right word. “Well, you look terrible.” 

  Killian’s mouth parted just slightly in surprise. “Terrible?”

Liam offered a somewhat sympathetic look. “Kind of, sorry. What I mean is, you look like you haven’t slept… ever.” 

  Killian’s mouth twitched up in a small smile before he looked away. “Aye, mate, I get it. Truth be told, I haven’t been sleeping well the past few nights.” 

  Liam nodded in understanding. He stayed quiet, eyes still trained on his brother, and the expression he wore made it clear he was expecting more information. 

  Killian paused, faltering as he tried to think of a casual way to explain his situation to this particular person standing before him. Clearing his throat, he began, “I… recently discovered something I did long ago came to greatly affect a close friend of mine.” It came out monotone and wooden, devoid of any real details, but it was all he could bring himself to say. 

  Liam chose that moment to make a most unfortunate attempt at a joke. 

  “Well,” he said, “It’s not like you killed his father or anything, right?”

  Killian’s stomach seized. He had wondered if the subject would ever be broached again between them, and if it was, how it would be handled. Liam, to his credit, was clearly trying to make light of the subject of Killian hurting his friend, suggesting it couldn’t be as bad as some of the other sins of the pirate’s past. 

  But, however difficult and admirable it might have been for Liam to gloss over his own pain to make Killian feel better about his current situation, he was wrong. Desperately, horrifyingly wrong. 

  Something about the devastated look that crossed onto Killian’s features made Liam immediately apologetic. “I’m sorry,” he said quickly, “I was just trying to… I shouldn’t have brought it up. I wasn’t…” He paused as Killian dipped his head forward just enough to pinch the bridge of his nose with his fingers.

Killian let out a shaky breath. The meager hours of sleep he had been able to steal over the past few nights could have been counted on his one hand, and it was beginning to catch up to him. He leaned back against the rail of the ship, abruptly needing the support as his knees went numb. 

  Liam watched him nervously, hesitant to say anything else. When Killian finally looked back up at him, his eyes were shining with unshed tears.

“That’s exactly what I did, Liam.”

Liam’s mouth dropped open and he stilled, gaping openly at his brother. “You… you what?”

Killian held his gaze as he ground out the words, “I killed David’s father. Nearly sixty years ago, if memory serves.” 

  Unable to stop himself, Liam took an automatic step back. “But how…?”

“He was tied to a cart, about to be executed by the king’s men,” Killlian started. “I intervened, intent on stealing their gold. It’s what pirates do, after all.” He gave a coarse, humorless laugh and went on. “And despite how he begged me to let him live so he could go home to his boy, I ran my sword through his chest and killed him. Couldn’t leave any loose ends to trace back to Pan.” 

  The bitterness in his tone was palpable, and Killian let out another measured, shaky breath to try to calm himself. His hand was shaking now as it too started to grow numb, and he clenched it into a fist at his side. 

  Horror seeped onto Liam’s face, raw and unmasked. 

  Killian pushed off the rail abruptly and began to pace the length of the deck, trying to regain the feeling in his legs. Liam continued to stare, his eyes following him. 

  After a moment, Liam cleared his throat and asked, “And David is…?” 

  Killian paused and held up his hook, as one might hold up a hand to tell someone to wait. “That’s the best bloody part, isn’t it?” He said. “Of course, this man was the grandfather of the woman I love. The woman I wish to make my wife. Because no matter how hard I try, no matter what I do to try to redeem myself, it seems I’ll never quite live down the exploits of Captain bloody Hook.” His eyes had a wild edge to them, and the dark circles cradling them made him look more than a little crazed. 

  Liam, possibly fearing his brother was seconds away from throwing himself off the side of the ship to drown, stepped forward and placed a firm hand on Killian’s shoulder.

“Hey,” he said, “Slow down, okay?” 

  Killian grunted softly. 

  “Come on,” Liam said, “Let’s talk some more over a drink, all right? I know where the captain keeps the rum.” 

  Killian laughed at that. Despite how appreciative he was of his brother’s attempt to help, he knew he sounded maniacal, and he desperately needed to relax before he lost it completely. 

  With a nod, he strode over to the hatch and dipped below deck. Liam hesitated, unsure if he should follow, but Killian was surprisingly quick, and when he returned after a few minutes, it was with two full flasks in hand. 

  Liam grasped one and immediately took a swig of the rum. It burned his throat, and he sputtered. “Sorry,” he breathed, laughing a bit at his own intolerance for the drink. “Nemo always preferred to stock wine.” 

  Killian had cut his flask’s content in half by the time Liam finished speaking. “I’m sorry,” Killian said quietly. “You’re the last person I wanted to know about this.” Liam kept watching him, unsure of what to say.

“The fact that you’re standing here, on my ship, is more than I ever could have hoped for from you,” Killian admitted. 

  They stood there in silence again, each taking the occasional sip from his flask.

  “I came here to swab the deck,” Killian said dully, squinting up at the sky.

  “I’ll help you,” Liam offered without hesitation. 

  Killian shook his head. “Not necessary, mate.” 

“Two are faster than one,” Liam reminded.

“Aye,” Killian conceded with a sigh. “That they are.” 

  +++ They worked in silence, each having started at the opposite end of the ship, aiming to meet in the middle. While he was begrudging to accept, Killian was grateful for the help. His movements were slow, exhaustion weighing him down like an anchor, and he took the occasional break to stretch out his shoulders. Along the way, he made mental notes of the areas that needed more attentive cleaning. He and Liam each held mops, ideal for swabbing the majority of the deck. The nooks and crannies he would attend to himself, later. 

  Eventually, the two brothers neared each other again. Liam reached the center first and paused, leaning on his mop, watching Killian. 

  “Why did you do it?” 

  Killian stopped, looking up at his brother. Neither of them had spoken in near an hour, and it took him a moment to register Liam’s question. 

  “Why’d I do what, mate?”

“Kill our father.” 

  The breath shot out of his lungs as if he had been punched. Liam’s gaze was unwavering as he watched him, awaiting a response. Killian reached for his flask and took a swig, reveling in the burn for a moment. 

  “Are you sure you want to have this conversation?” Killian asked, his voice rough. 

  Liam shrugged, his eyes narrowing. “Humor me.” 

  Killian fell silent. He had shared his sordid tale before; most of his family knew the details by now. Regina, of course, had known he had killed his father. He had confessed to Emma and Henry, adding in the details about his brother after the events on the Nautilus. It wasn’t an easy subject, to be sure, but he had spoken of it before. Just not to Liam. 

  “You need to understand,” he began slowly, searching carefully for his next words, “That my relationship with our father was very different than the one you had with him.” 

  Liam scoffed quietly, almost inaudibly. “Yeah,” he said sardonically, “I figured as much when I found out you killed him.” 

  Killian gave a short nod. Words escaped him once again. He grappled with the events in his mind, struggling to find a proper explanation to fit them. How was he supposed to tell his younger brother—a man whose devotion to his lost father had driven him within an inch of murder—that Brennan Jones had sold his two sons into a life of slavery to save his own hide? 

  Killian was silent for too long and Liam cleared his throat expectantly, growing impatient. 

  “Brennan needed to escape the law,” Killian started, “And so he left us behind.”

“Us?” Liam interjected. 

  Killian cleared his throat, feeling awkward. “Yes, my brother and I. My older brother, then my only brother, Liam.” 

  Killian looked up at him then, and their eyes met. Confusion flooded Liam’s face. 

  “Our father named you after his eldest son, Liam the first,” Killian supplied helpfully. 

  Liam was quiet for a moment before he murmured, “Liam… is he…?” 

  Killian nodded. “Dead, yes. For a long time now.” A mournful silence fell over him, as often happened when he spoke of his older brother. His gaze drifted out to the ocean. 

   “So, he just left you, then?” 

  Killian glanced back to his brother. “Aye,” he said carefully. 

  “The man I knew would never do that.” 

  Killian ground his teeth together, his jaw flexing. “Perhaps,” he said without conviction. 

  “Then what happened?” 

  “We grew up on slaves ships,” Killian said bluntly. He had been trying to avoid painting their father as a villain, but with Liam’s pressing questions, there was only so much he could dance around and avoid. 

  Liam’s jaw dropped open. “He sold you into servitude?”

“Aye,” Killian said, and his eyes flit back to the sea. “Liam looked after me, practically raised me. We joined the royal navy, acquiring the very ship you’re standing on.” 

  Liam’s brows raised at that, and he glanced around the ship again, as if seeing it for the first time. 

  “Liam was killed in Neverland,” Killian said with unbridled bitterness, “On a fool’s errand from a king I vowed to issue justice to. And so the Jewel of the Realm became the Jolly Roger.” 

  Liam’s gaze fell back to Killian, and there was something new held in his blue eyes. Not quite pity, but something close. The hardness in his expression had softened somewhat.

Killian swallowed uncomfortably and continued. “When I met our father again, I was working for the Evil Queen. Killing our father was a test, to see if I had the mettle for what she had in mind.” 

  “I don’t understand,” Liam said, befuddled. “My father wasn’t old enough to–”

Killian intervened, sensing where he was going, “Sleeping curse, apparently right after he left my brother and I. As I was told, he was awoken by his nurse, your mother.” 

   It clicked, and Liam nodded. “Right. I’ve heard the story. Many times. It was his favorite to tell.”

Killian wasn’t quite sure what to say to that, so he simply continued. “I met him in a pub where he worked, as arranged for by the queen. I waited until closing, till I was the only one left in the bar.” Liam tensed at this, as if he expected this to be the moment his father had been killed. Killian watched him for a moment before he went on. 

  “I couldn’t do it. Not then. He told me how much he had regretted what he’d done to us, how he was a changed man.” His tone had dipped low, and it was clear even then he didn’t believe a word of it. “I decided to let him go, offered him passage on my ship. Then he told me of you.” Killian’s eyes shot up to Liam’s. 

“That night, I came to your home, waited outside while he tucked you into bed. You looked like my older brother,” he said, and a small, fond smile upturned his mouth. “Even then, I could tell you were my brother.” 

  A gull called overhead, squawking down at them from its perch on the crow’s nest of the ship. Liam turned his head to look at it as Killian reached for his flask again. They both knew what was coming next. Finding his father dead in their yard was a sight branded onto Liam’s memory forever, and he shifted in his stance uncomfortably as Killian continued. 

  “I overheard him tucking you into bed,” Killian went on, and a crack in his voice betrayed him halfway through. He looked away, clearing his throat. “It was… strikingly similar to the last words he said to me, as a boy.” 

  “Before he left,” Liam said, understanding dawning. 

  “Aye,” Killian sighed. “It was then I heard your name for the first time.” He looked up, hesitantly meeting his eyes. “That was just too much for me.”

  Liam swallowed against the lump rising in his throat. “I didn’t know.” 

  Killian gave a half-shrug. “I don’t expect pity. The events of the past have haunted me for decades, and our father is no exception.” He grew quiet as he took a moment to cap his flask and slipped it inside the inner pocket of his jacket. “I don’t deserve sympathy and I certainly don’t deserve forgiveness for the things I’ve put you through, Liam.”

 “When I found out,” Liam said slowly, “I wanted to run you through with my knife… with our father’s knife, actually. It was his. I kept it. I thought that would be just, you know? Fair retribution.” He shook his head and stepped over to a cargo box on the side of the deck, leaning his mop against it. Killian watched him. 

“It’s not right, what you did,” Liam said bluntly. “And you can’t make up for it.”

“I know.” 

  “But you didn’t ruin my life,” Liam added. Killian quirked a brow, and he continued. “If I hadn’t lost my father, I wouldn’t have joined the crew of the Nautilus. I never would have met Nemo. He’s been a father to me, too. It’s hard to imagine my life without him.” 

  Killian gave a small, understanding smile. “Aye,” he said. “I know the feeling.”

  A thoughtful look crossed onto Liam’s features, and he sized Killian up for a moment. “You’re not the same man, you know.” 

  Killian looked at him curiously. 

  Liam shrugged. “I can tell that much. You’re not the same pirate we took on board the Nautilus all those years ago.” 

  Killian smiled at this, letting the words sink in. He had heard them before, of course, in some manner or another, and he liked to believe they were true, but they felt unique coming from this particular man. 

  “He’ll forgive you.” 

   Killian looked up sharply. “What?” 

  “David,” Liam continued, “David is going to forgive you.” 

  Despite himself, tears pricked his eyes, and Killian blinked to keep them at bay. He wanted to protest, claim his insecurities, but the words didn’t come, obstructed as his throat grew tight. 

  “You may not deserve it,” Liam added, “But then again, that really isn’t up to you, is it?” 

  Killian exhaled, slow and controlled, through his nose. I don’t deserve it, he thought desperately, and while the words wouldn’t come, the thought was as plain on his face as if he’d written it there in ink. 

  “Nemo forgave me,” Liam murmured, just loud enough for Killian to hear. “And I know it’s different,” he added before Killian could say anything, “But his forgiveness, it… it’s changed me. For good.” 

  That was a sentiment Killian agreed with wholeheartedly. It took him few minutes to compose himself. While the tears never dropped from his eyes, they were stubborn, his vision blurred as he finished swabbing his half of the deck. Liam took a seat on one of the larger cargo boxes, watching him and taking small, hesitant sips from his flask every now and again. 

  When he finished, Killian took both their mops, wrung them out over the bucket, and stowed them away. 

  “Maybe next time you could have some wine on hand,” Liam said when he returned. “Or champagne.” 

  Killian’s heart swelled at the words “next time” and he stood a little straighter as he shot Liam a grin. “Deal. Although, we have plenty at the house, if you and Captain Nemo are ever available for dinner.” 

  Liam paused, his eyes trained on something in the distance, and Killian was just about to brush the offer aside when Liam turned and offered a genuine, albeit small, smile. “I’d like that,” he said. “I know Nemo would, too.” 

  “It would be a welcome reprieve from Granny’s lasagna, I’m sure,” Killian said, shooting him a wink. 

  Liam didn’t stay much longer, and Killian had the feeling he was still processing all he had learned about their father. It didn’t make Brennan’s death easier, but something between the brothers had shifted. 

  Liam asked about Henry, and Killian was quick to regale him with the latest adventure in Henry starting driver’s training. “Will he be there?” Liam asked. “If I came for dinner?” 

  “Aye,” Killian said fondly. “He stays with Emma and I about every other week, to include weekends.”

Liam nodded. “I’d like to come a night he’s there, if that’s all right. The last time he saw me, I was about to slit your throat, so…” 

  Killian chuckled lowly. “Aye, perhaps a make up meeting is in order.” 

  “I think so,” Liam agreed with a wry smile. They looked at each other, each feeling slightly awkward as they thought of the best way to say goodbye. Liam eventually extended his hand, shaking Killian’s firmly, and the pirate’s heart bloomed with joy in his chest. 

  Killian watched him leave, and once Liam was out of sight, he pulled the ring box out of his jacket pocket. He popped it open with his hook, and the two-karat diamond gleamed brilliantly as the sunlight hit it. He worried his bottom lip between his teeth, mulling over everything his half-brother had told him. If forgiveness was attainable, despite his doubts, he had to begin somewhere. 

The truth seemed a good place to start.

The Pompeii ruins have always been on my bucket list. The demise of Pompeii has intrigued me for most of my life. The thought that an entire civilization was lost in a span of 24 hours is just unbelievable. So, seeing Pompeii in person and walking the ancient streets was a spiritual experience for me. This post will cover a basic timeline of Pompeii eruption, how it was discovered, the restoration and what to see when you visit. My hope is that I will spark an interest in you to go and explore Pompeii on your own. If you have questions after reading this I invite you to ask them in the comment section below. Timeline of Pompeii Eruption

Pompeii is located in southern Italy near the Bay of Naples and is roughly 170 acres. While it was once a thriving metropolis August 29th 79 A.D. it was buried by ash and pumice from Mount Vesuvius erupted. A young Roman named Pliny the Elder was the only surviving eyewitness to Pompeii’s demise. Pliny was across the bay from Vesuvius when it erupted. He wrote a letter outlining what he saw as a city was completely wiped out in only 25 hours.

Vesuvius belched out a massive cloud of ash, molten lava, and sulfuric gas miles into the sky. Pliny felt minor eruptions at 8 am but there was a normal occurrence and threw no real notice. By 1 pm that afternoon the volcano suddenly and with a massive amount of force blew its top. This eruption sent a cloud over the entire area in its shadow, in a short 30 minutes Pompeii was dark with an ash cloud.

By 3 pm that same afternoon Vesuvius erupted again and this one threw lava that as it cooled landed and blocked any and all passages of escapes. The river Sarno was completely blocked to ships. Many residents tried to leave, others sought shelter and we’re going to ride it out. Unfortunately, 15 feet of ash, pumice, and rock buried them along with the city.

In total between Pompeii and Herculaneum, it is estimated that more than 13,000 people died within the period of one day.

Pompeii Excavation Site

Herculaneum a nearby coastal town was discovered in 1709 while digging a well for a Naples king. The excavation of Pompeii actually started in 1748 by Carlo di Borbone he was trying to increase the prestige of the kingdom of the two Scillies.  For many years excavation continued off and on until the first features were exposed including the necropolis outside Porta Ercolano. Little by little what now is visible of Pompeii is open to the public. Excavation has come to a halt so that the small number of funds available could be used to protect what has already been exposed.

Artifacts Found in Pompeii

Thousands of artifacts were found during the excavation of Pompeii. They show what life was like in an early Roman city. The Pompeii artifacts show great detail, craftsmanship and ritual background. Many are beyond beautiful and offer a glimpse into the hierarchy of its civilization.

Pompeii Preserved Bodies

The most powerful artifact found in Pompeii is the people themselves. Pompeii was destroyed so quickly that many of its residents were seemingly frozen in time. The excavators filled the people gaps in with plaster of Paris and that was like mummifying the residents of Pompeii. The volcanic ash and debris sealed the people in and basically preserved them forever. The distress that they were in at the time of death is obvious when you see them. Seeing these people was emotional, to say the least.

I need some advice. I am an assistant manager at a small call center where I have worked for around 5 years (3 of them full-time). It was just announced to me and the manager (the only 2 full-time employees), that we have been bought by another call center that is not located in our town. The manager is relocating and has been offered a full-time job at their main office (with what I am assuming is a decent raise) about 4 hours away. Insurance wants to total my car?

So recently an 18 wheeler ran into the back of my car damaging the whole trunk and the force of the truck pushed my car into a post scraping the side of my car. The insurance guy came and just got a call back saying that they want to total my car and pay for it. The car is a black 2002 jetta 1.8 turbo from a small local dealer and has 140,000 miles. Im currently still paying it off and the car cost me $6000. Here is my concern, they haven't told me how much they plan to give me for my jetta but i went on craigslist and the average cost for a 2002 jetta 1.8t is around what i paid from $5000-$6000, will the insurance give me that amount because bluebook says my car is worth at most around $3400 in excelent condition and at retail value according to bluebook is around $4500. All I'm concern with is either my car is restore to the point before the accident or if they get me enough money to buy a new jetta of equal or greater quality.
