"The new building replaces a complex of modernist building volumes that used to occupy the entire site and that could not be adapted to today’s sustainability standards. As the Antwerp city centre has few public green surfaces, the transformation of the site from a merely private, mineral and infrastructural area into a public garden is a crucial requirement of the competition brief. Surrounded by fragments of public green, the parcel is key to the formation of a larger, coherent park. Another – contradictory - demand was to maintain a more recent representational pavilion, which was positioned as an obstacle in between the fragments. By situating the full program in a compact volume across the pavilion, this frontage is cut up and the main entrance is brought close to the street. This large volume, however, divides the park in a front and a back garden. Finally, by rotating the plan around one of its corners as it climbs up, the building shifts towards the centre; existing neighbouring buildings are respected and a sculptural form emerges. During the design process the pavilion building is at last replaced by a glazed volume to house the congress and exhibition part of the programme. The building is conceived as a bridge structure over and across the pavilion. At the centre of the plan one large steel truss spans from one core to the other. Two more trusses are integrated in the concrete side walls and their triangulation defines the form of the window openings. In a next step this window form is applied all over the building as it turns out to be very efficient when it comes to an ideal balance between daylight access and overheating by the sun. Assuming there were a lot of dads and straight boyfriends (who cheered at being called out), they announced they were going to recap what was Dan And Phil (TM) and walk us through the most important lore

They pulled out little dioramas (kudos to PJ and Sophie) and little Ken dolls of themselves and, oh boy, did they do stuff with their little dolls

They recalled how they met and Dan came over to film the first pinof. Dan kept making innuendos about Phil being ''a stranger from the Internet'', ''inviting him in his home'', ''had cameras pointing at his bed''.... yea he was talking as if they had filmed porn that day

The pulled out shapies to whisker up the dolls and quoted ''the most fun I've ever had'' before Phil's doll tackled Dan's and they started grinding the dolls togethers

2011 - Manchester

Dan (with his terrible square haircut) was supposed to study law but ''never learned to do laundry'' and ''didn't have parents to teach him anything'' so he kept coming over to Phil's, who was unemployed

Conservative Bart De Wever was sworn in Monday as Belgium's new prime minister, after striking a hard-fought coalition deal that moves the country to the right.

Reached after seven months of tortuous negotiations, the agreement makes De Wever the first nationalist from Dutch-speaking Flanders to be named Belgian premier.

A law-and-order candidate whose coalition has already promised to crack down on irregular migration, De Wever's rise to power reinforces a marked right-wing shift in European politics.

The 54-year-old, who in recent years has backed off on calls for Flanders to become an independent country, took the oath of office before King Philippe at the royal palace in Brussels.

From there, he headed straight to a gathering of EU leaders a few blocks away, for talks on defence and transatlantic relations -- quipping to reporters that he was "jumping right in".

On the day's headline topic, De Wever said Belgium was committed to meeting NATO's longstanding defence spending target of two percent of GDP, up from 1.3 percent at present.

"Europe has been a bit lazy on the topic of defence," he said -- arguing that Russian President Vladimir "Putin has woken us up."

Faced with a twin challenge from President Donald Trump -- threatening trade tariffs as well as pressuring allies to ramp up defence spending -- De Wever said the EU needed to preserve its "relationship with the United States."

De Wever's N-VA party is part of the hard-right ECR group in the European Parliament, which also includes lawmakers from the parties of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Czech leader Petr Fiala. 

"Our ECR group now has three prime ministers at the European Council table and participates in the government of seven countries," French hard-right lawmaker Marion Marechal rejoiced on X.

Hard-right parties, often riding anti-immigrant sentiment, performed strongly in European Parliament elections last year, and have topped recent national and regional votes in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands.

60-hour marathon

Split between French- and Dutch-speaking communities and with a highly complex political system, Belgium has an unenviable record of painfully protracted coalition discussions -- reaching 541 days back in 2010-2011.

This time around, five groups sought to forge a coalition after June elections that failed to produce a clear majority -- with talks led by De Wever's N-VA which claimed the most seats. 

The new government brings together three parties from Dutch-speaking Flanders: the N-VA, the centrist Christian-Democrats and the leftist Vooruit (Onward).

And it includes two from French-speaking Wallonia: the centrist Les Engages and the centre-right Reformist Movement.

Together, they hold an 81-seat majority in Belgium's 150-seat parliament.

Coalition talks hit a wall during the summer over the issue of plugging the country's budget deficit -- estimated at 4.6 percent of gross domestic product in 2024, one of the highest in the European Union.

Belgium is one of seven EU countries facing disciplinary action for running a deficit above three percent of GDP, in violation of the bloc's fiscal rules.

De Wever, the mayor of Antwerp since 2013, has pushed for cuts in social benefits and pension reforms that have already sparked opposition from labour unions. 

He had threatened to throw in the towel if no coalition deal was reached Friday. 

An agreement was struck with just hours to go after a 60-hour marathon session to iron out differences over an 800-page programme.  

But the gender makeup of the new government has raised some eyebrows, with 11 men and just four women. 

De Wever's N-VA was already part of a right-leaning ruling coalition between 2014 and 2018.

He takes over from outgoing prime minister Alexander De Croo, whose seven-party coalition took an arduous 493 days to emerge back in 2019-2020. 

De Croo had stayed on as caretaker leader after the June elections.

Penthouse Antwerp by Hans Verstuyft Architecten

An office of the late sixties was renovated. On the ground floor a spacious commercial space was created, the top two layers were transformed into a spacious duplex penthouse. By carving out a spacious patio garden, a generous 'Urban Villa' with an amazing sense of space and openness was created. Diagonal vistas around the thirty-five-year-old tree are making the patio garden present everywhere. This plan organisation also provides privacy with respect to the home-office that also finds its accommodation in this unit. The garden connects and shapes the surrounding areas, including library, living kitchen, TV room and bedrooms. Fireplaces in library and kitchen contribute to the real home feeling one does not expect to have on top of an office building. Unique views of the city are showing a continuous film of life. Every moment is special. The pulse of the city life, but also unique cloud formations or the sunset are experiences over and over again, giving some peace after a workday. On top a small pool with counter flow was installed. Here you can swim towards the cathedral and experience the skyline.

Kat. It’s so weird that after all these years you still have antis stalking your blog and talking about you. I just saw an anti (she’s a solo harrie) who stalk larries blog since 2016 and just today she stalking your blog and laughed at you for saying that you didn’t go to Louis’ show because you’re too old for the band.

What? Also...she was laughing at you because she believes you and other larries are abandoning larry/louis and he’s losing fans. You included. My God! Antis really have no life!

Oh it's a life, just not a pleasant one. Imagine having such as an unhealthy hyperfocus on people who annoy you because they don't confirm your worldview. It's sad really. Life is so much more pleasant when you grow up and accept that some people are simply not going to agree with you. That Louis isn't going to go away.

When we were in Rainbow Direction, Ed always used to say "don't worry about the hate mail, it just means you're doing something right, you can't change anything without ruffling some feathers", and he was so right. So thank you for letting me know that I'm STILL the little stone in someone's shoe, after all this time. Definitely think we did something right there.

I already reblogged the misinterpreted post earlier in the day - it's clear this person doesn't follow my blog too religiously though. All summer, I've talked about hoping to have recovered enough from my accident to drive to Antwerp, but doubting that I'd make it to London .

And for the record, it didn't exactly look like he was losing fans to me yesterday at Antwerp Sportpaleis. That’s the venue One Direction played in 2013 when I joined the fandom. Even with the balconies closed, it was still double the capacity of the venue he played a year ago. He's not losing fans, he's gaining fans. Also who cares who has the most fans, I care about who makes the music that pleases me the most, who does the shows, that I enjoy myself best at - again there the haters are with their need for external validation.

And speaking of validation - the fans yesterday were super energetic, and really having a good time. They knew every word of every song to the last word and shouted along - every word of every entire song. The energy of Louis’ fans is crazy, the energy of his band is crazy, and people are niiiiiice. People next to you don't pretend you're not there, they smile and speak to you and are kind. It was very much a “we’re all in this together” kind of mood.

Fucking family he said.

I really enjoyed looking around at the audience and watching how much they all enjoyed this.

Final note: as mentioned in my reblog, I consider myself outside of the target age group of former One Direction band members - but for the fucking record, I do not consider myself too old for Louis' band. Boy did I enjoy watching his drummer go at it yesterday...

The development of the Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles is of course connected to the history and evolution of delftware as a whole, starting in the middle of the seventeenth century. This earthenware, made primarily of clay covered with a transparent glaze and hand painted in a characteristic way is not the invention of one man or a one factory. It is the result of many different influences and a great number of years of thorough experimentation with types of clay, painting and firing techniques. It was produced in Antwerp in the sixteenth century.

Ghislain was born in Antwerp and has 63 cinematography credits from 1950 to 1981. Ghislain was an Oscar winner for Tess (1981). His other honorable mention is Night and Fog. His entry among my best 1001 is Woody Allen's Love and Death.

Mike had 10 cinematography credits from 1970 to 2013. He was an Oscar winner for Up, his 1984 live action short.

Dave had 53 cinematography credits from a 1957 documentary short to a posthumous release of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue. His other notable credits include Johnny Cash in San Quentin, Woodstock, THX 1138, Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Soul to Soul, Wattstax, Neil Young's Journey Through the Past, Let the Good Times Roll, Rust Never Sleeps, and Zoot Suit.

Rob has 57 cinematography credits from 1973 to a 2019 short. This is his second honorable mention, after Crimewave. His other notable credits include Sandstone, Rescue from Gilligan's Island, 20 episodes of Thirtysomething, 11 of Quantum Leap, and 14 of Felicity.

Ape identification please.

In Antwerp, a collection of graphic design connected with ScheldApen was published, and again I am intrigued by the photo above.

From 1988 until 2013, ScheldApen was a cultural centre in Antwerp. In the main room, against the wall facing the bar was a wall-filling reproduction of an ape -- I believe it is a chimpansee -- putting his arm around a naked girl. Her face is ecstatic. His left hand touches her left breast. He seems to be laughing. With her arm, she is holding onto his arm, suggesting that his touch is not unwelcome. With his right hand he seems to be pointing to her right breast.

The man who put the picture there is Kevin Apetown.
