Happy Birthday to Eddi Reader.
Eddi, born born Sadenia Reader on August 29th in 1959, has been around several blocks, musically speaking. A native of Glasgow, she has been well known and loved here for years. Oddly enough, Reader jumped right into her performing career in the early ‘80s by travelling throughout Europe with a circus troupe. Shortly after, she decided to settle in London and become a session vocalist.
Her choice proved fruitful as her book soon filled up and she landed work with the Eurythmics, the Waterboys, and Gang of Four. None seemed like the right setting for Reader. Then she found her place in the spotlight with Fairground Attraction. The band’s debut, First of a Million Kisses, hit the British charts in 1988, along with the single “Perfect.” Reader gained a good bit of recognition, both critical and popular, and was able to launch her solo career from that platform, although it did not happen immediately.
Her solo debut, Mirmama, saw daylight in 1992 and found Reader’s lovely pipes wrapped around some fine tunes. Although it was a limited release, it caught the ear of the folks at Warner Brothers, who followed it in 1994 with her self-titled album. This second effort included more Reader originals amid the slick production.
Despite touring in its support, she still managed to contribute to recordings by Thomas Dolby, Liberty Horses, and others. When things didn’t pan out with her major label, Reader returned to her independent roots and issued Candyfloss and Medicine in 1996 and Angels & Electricity in 1999, all the while perfecting her brand of smooth acoustic folk-pop.
Finding herself with yet another musical home, Compass Records re-released both Mirmama and Angels & Electricity in the United States and allowed Reader the chance to put forth her most organic offering to date with Simple Soul in 2001. Seventeen Stories: The Best of Eddi Reader and the all-new Driftwood arrived in 2002, followed by Eddi Reader and my personal favourite, Sings the Songs of Robert Burns in 2003 and Peacetime in 2007.
2008 sawEddi make a foray into film with an appearance in Me and Orson Wells, the following year she commemorated the 250th anniversary of Burn’s birth with a deluxe version of his songs with additional songs to add to the original. That same year she also put out new music in the form of her ninth studio album, Love is the Way.
Save for a live record, which appeared in 2010 Eddi took a long break from the recording studios, returning in 2014 with Vagabond. There was only a slightly lesser gap between albums with her 12th studio record appearing in 2018, Cavalier, which was recorded in Glasgow.
In 2020 Eddi celebrated 40 years in the music business with a UK wide tour that included 10 Scottish shows, that was before the Covid virus came calling, the shows had been rescheduled twice. The album Light Is in the Horizon followed, her 12th studio piece.
In 2024, the band's original line-up announced a Japan and UK tour, and reunited for an album titled "Beautiful Happening", set for release on September 20th 2024. A first single, "What's Wrong With The World ?", was released in February, followed by the album's title track in June.
Eddi is back to touring with her solo band and has a gig on Hayling Island off the south coast of England, in December a seven date tour of Ireland follows in 2025, then ten gigs in England.
Don't worry she hasn't forgotten her homeland, look out for Phil Cunningham’s Christmas Songbook, where Eddi will join the former Silly Wizard musician in ten Festive concerts around Scotland between December 12th and 22nd.
I've chosen a gaelic song that Eddi performed, it's called Buain Ná Rainich (Fairy Love Song) and is from her 11th album Vagabond.
The other well-known title, Tha mi Sgìthh, there are many variations of the story relating to this song, but one version says that the song was originally sung by a fairy who caught sight of a beautiful girl when he was cutting bracken. They fell in love, but alas there was no fairytale ending. When her family learned of the love, they stopped the girl from seeing the fairy and they locked her away. His song mourns the situation. The tune of this song is very old and it is often used as a lullaby. In Cape Breton though, it is often used as a Puirt à beul!

De Algemene Verwarring #96 - 4 September 2023
The ninety-sixth episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, September 4, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Yes, we're back at it after a long summer break, it's September 4 and it's bleeding hot in the Quindo studio, so nothing has changed. Pictured below is the UK postpunk band The Psychedelic Furs at around 1980, a lineup that wouldn't last long but that was responsible for the self-titled debut album that was released in 1980. The band was brought to my attention again by the Dynamite Hemorrhage radio show. Host Jay Hinman mentioned some reviews that he had read about the debut album being characterized as the ultimate mix of Roxy Music and The Velvet Underground. For me it was also the first time I heard these two bands mentioned when talking about The Psychedelic Furs, but it kinda makes sense. Anyway, the debut album is really really a great record, sexy and groovy and made to dance to. So I played the track "We Love You" from the Furs. There's more old music in this episode from The Prunes, The Vultures, The Peechees, Armitage Shanks, Blod. But moreover, the summer spawned some really great releases, I don't think I have ever bought so many records in the summer months as I did now in 2023, and most of them being new releases. The new Famous Mammals lp is a masterpiece, there's new bands such as Children Maybe Later, The Sheaves and Burnt Envelope, and new releases from bands such as the synth goths from Es and droners Pefkin. So, a great episode, if you ask me. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for the show. Enjoy!

an introductory rec list (that no one asked for) to some of my favorite ships: drarry [4/10]
First fic I read for the pairing: Obsession by yesbocchan [2k,T] Harry thinks Malfoy is up to something evil. Until he finds out maybe he's not the only one with an obsession. [just a cute little eighth year fic i saw on tumblr back when i was first getting into fandom stuff (and back into harry potter in general) when i was near the end of high school. it’s cute, it’s sweet, and i was curious about drarry as a concept so]
Fic that really sold me on the pairing: Stealing Sweaters by DorthyAnn [12k,T] It's their eighth and final year and over the course of several months, Harry and Draco have managed to become close friends. Their friends are entirely certain that they ought to be much, much more. So they just decide to... help things along. [listen, everything that DorthyAnn writes is phenomenal, so how could i not fall in love with this ship after this?]
Absolute favorite fic(s) for the pairing: Animus Nexus by MystyVander [96k,T] It's Eighth Year at Hogwarts and it seems Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy hate each other more than ever before. Everybody is sick of it. Somebody was tired of the two enough to curse them, binding them together. What at first appears to be a death sentence to both Harry and Draco turns out to be the thing the both of them needed the most. [it’s enemies to friends to lovers coupled with accidental bonding coupled with discussions of magical theory coupled with wizarding traditions with a few misunderstandings and some angst all set in eighth year and that’s basically the perfect combination for me.] Twist of Fate by Oakstone730 [302k,T] Draco asks Harry to help him beat the Imperius curse during 4th year. The lessons turn into more than either expected. A story of redemption and forgiveness. Pairings: HP/DM (Slash) Timeframe: 1994-2002 Goblet to 4 yrs post-DH EWE Rating T for language, high angst, content. [this fic has lived rent-free in my head for three years and it fucking slaps. there’s angst and fluff and so many bittersweet moments and it’s both canon compliant and completely canon divergent and i am obsessed with it. 40000/10]
Most recent fic I’ve read for the pairing: love me now (touch me now) by swisstae [3k,G] Harry's never had a bath. Draco plans on changing that. OR in which Harry gets his hair washed and Loves It (and Draco. He loves Draco too.) [this fic is adorable and sweet and i enjoyed it immensely.]
Favorite AU(s) I’ve read for the pairing: Alternate Sorting AU (Slytherin!Harry): Malfoy Flavor by Vorabiza [199k,E] Harry’s ready to banish the Golden Boy image and take charge of his life. Unfortunately for him, or fortunately, there are surprises in store for him. [Slytherin!Harry but it’s not an entire canon rewrite like most of the alternate sorting fics i love so much, so that’s fun. also severitus and just the right amount of soul crushingly painful angst. oh and it has a delightfully fluffy little sequel. ] Alternate Sorting AU 2: Electric Boogaloo (Ravenclaw!Draco): Chaos Theory by Tessa Crowley [102k,E] Chaos: when the present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future. One gene varies, one neuron fires, one butterfly flaps its wings, and Draco Malfoy's life is completely different. Draco has always found a certain comfort in chaos. Perhaps he shouldn't. (warnings for: major character death, graphic depictions of violence, psychological torture, implied/referenced non-con) [as my notes on my bookmark said: GOD DAMNNNNN. I LOVE THIS FIC. I CRIED SO MUCH AND ALSO THERE WAS LAUGHTER AND JUST GOD DAMN. ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES. so that about sums it up.] Time Travel AU: Annus Mirabilis by Ren [39k,E] Harry and Malfoy are trapped at Hogwarts around the time the school was founded. Stuck with a different way of doing magic, with no chocolate, and with each other, they have to find a way to work together if they want a chance to go home. [i almost never fuck with time travel aus but… this one slaps. also? hogwarts founders era?? hell yeah. also also? their relationship progresses in a way that feels so natural and the tension is so palpable and the writing is excellent.]
Favorite Series for the pairing: Leo Inter Serpentes by Aeternum [746k,E,6 Works] Just one conversation between two eleven year old boys goes slightly differently, and the world changes. Just how much will be different with Harry being sorted into Slytherin, and how much will stay the same? [Slytherin!Harry? Harry, Draco, Hermione friendship? Severitus? All in a complete series re-write that’s currently six completed works deep? What more could you possibly need?]
Longest fic I’ve read for the pairing: I Do What I Want by XxTheDarkLordxX [509k,E] They say you shouldn't touch what isn't yours... Too bad no one told Harry that. A simple mistake that Harry made in his first year at Hogwarts is coming back to bite him in the arse. The war is over but the threat to his life is just beginning. This story begins with a simple apology that changes Harry’s life. It starts a domino effect that leads to unbelievable connections, undying love, unique past lives, unknown villains and an unstoppable family. Follow Harry and his friends on an epic adventure filled with twists, bumps, comfort, enemies, a new life and a lot of love. (warnings for: major character death, some character bashing) [the first (or first few? i forget) chapters are written in first person but they’re an internal monologue and the rest of the fic is not in first person, just so you know. Also, the concept slaps and the fic is cute and i love to see it (and i’ve read it thrice).]
Fic(s) with some of my favorite tropes: Matchmaking: Ron Weasley: Accidental Matchmaker by Phoenix_Waves [2k,T] "There's not a sexual tension out there that the man can't accidentally detect!" George beamed. "And then ask the stupid arse question that's going to light the spark and fan the flames." Lee added matter-of-factly. A fluffy Christmas one shot featuring our favorite older Gryffindors. [god this is excellent: the obliviousness, the mutual pining, the matchmaking, having the older gryffindor kids around and having a good holiday time- it’s all excellent.] Soulmates: Kiss Me Not by DorthyAnn [21k,T] Sometimes a witch or wizard's magical signature is so completely incompatible with another that they repel one another like magnets. On the other hand, if two magical signatures mesh well together, well there are no stronger relationships in all the world. In a sample of a thousand people, the average witch or wizard will be slightly repelled by four or five people and strongly repelled by only one, at the most. The opposite is true for attraction. But Harry Potter can't kiss anyone at all. [this is actually such a fascinating take on the classic soulmates trope. there’s no predestined person for everyone and there’s no magical guarantee of anything, just magic being a little difficult and i adore that. also the writing style is excellent and the characterizations are spot on.] Accidental Bonding + Bed Sharing: Let's Take A Chance On Happiness by endless_grey [21k,E] Harry works with Luna at her magical antique shop, and everything is going pretty well until a mysterious ring makes an appearance. Cue curse-breaker Draco Malfoy and an accidental bond, and suddenly Harry is magically married to his former nemesis. They need to break the bond before Hermione's fundraiser, but Harry doesn't remember "fall in love with the git" being part of the plan. [i discovered this fic while looking for something else, but it’s so good. i love their dynamic and it’s shift as the story progresses and i love both of their friendships with luna just as much. it’s funny and a little angsty and well written and has two of my favorite tropes in it. what more can i say?]

Muhnochwa
Image © Éphéméride des Chimères, @chimeride
[The muhnochwa is a phantom assailant, a category of monsters I’ve dealt with a couple of times before. See the phantom slasher, dark scourge and the simaniac for a few of my other takes on the trope. This entity was said to have attacked the town of Lucknow in 2002, and was blamed on everything from a UFO to ball lightning to genetically modified insects released by the Pakistani army. There are a number of depictions online, but none of them matched the whole description (circular, bat wings, lights). The idea that “circular insect = louse” is one that @chimeride had, and I think it’s completely brilliant.]
Muhnochwa CR 4 N Construct This metallic contraption resembles a squat, circular insect with bat wings. It has four oversized claws and three lights—two in front that glow red, and one behind glowing blue.
The muhnochwa, or face scratcher, is a terror weapon developed by wizards to torment or assassinate their enemies. They are especially used when the goal is to put a whole community on edge, and they will often attack seemingly random targets. The creature can fly silently in order to swoop down and leave their victim with terrible gashes or electric shocks. If attacked, it pulses with bewildering lights, leaving its enemies dazed while it either flies away or fights back against those still active. If their master dies, a muhnochwa continues its programmed task, attacking creatures at random until it is destroyed.

80s Rock Bands represented by Deadliest Catch Quotes:
Dokken: "If you're gonna have a calamity, I'd say that's about the best we could call for." -Captain Keith Colburn, Wizard
(note: This may not be the only quote Dokken will get for this. We'll see...)
This quote comes from a more recent season, where a heater in the wall of the Wizard's galley caught fire. The wires got the insulation going, smoke came up and the wall got blackened, but luckily, engineer Roger Schlosstein found it, put it out, and turned the galley breakers off before the fire could take off anywhere. (Of course he disconnected the wires to that one heater before turning the power back on). Keith said the line after that ordeal, with as many things that can go wrong on a boat in the middle of one of the most treacherous seas, and with as many ways that situation could have been far worse (fire is one of the biggest dangers, because escaping a burning boat is extremely dangerous when the water is cold enough to kill someone in three minutes), they got pretty lucky. Worst thing was some singed insulation, and having one of a few heat sources down. Not great with the eventual repair costs and being down a heater in the arctic cold, but *far worse* things could have happened here.
Speaking from the days of my biggest obsession with Deadliest Catch, I'll admit, Captain Keith is not one of my favorites. (Albeit, like George Lynch, his temper has gotten better over the years and he seems to be a better person than he once was, so we've already got *that* for modern day Dokken often reuniting with him for one-off shows). So why would I represent one of my absolute favorite bands with one of my least favorite captains?
It comes down to a point a friend of mine made in a conversation on a Rockfic forum back in 2016 (when I was in the height of my longest-running Dokken hyperfixation following the reunion.) Considering things that have happened with other 80s bands in the same category with Dokken, for as much drama as the Dokken guys had, and for the rough things they did go through, far worse things have happened to other bands in that time period. Sure, they fought with each other, but maybe not on the level of their closest cousin band (Ratt). Sure, some of the guys had problems with drugs. Don would drink to cope with anxiety and panic attacks, and George, Jeff, and Mick had their own problems with alcohol and cocaine. Jeff has been honest about the extreme of his case of locking himself up and drinking, doing a ton of cocaine at once, and getting*incredibly* paranoid... BUT, we never saw Jeff get screwed up on the level of someone like Glenn Hughes, to the point of not being able to perform live for years or remember anything coherent of the time period. Nobody had an alcohol addiction driven by anxiety that led to a tragic death like with Steve Clark or Gary Richrath. Nobody overdosed and died while shooting up heroin -or got a deadly long-term illness from it like Robbin Crosby. They had some tough tours (and even cut the European tour in 86 off after many months and some of them crashing out from exhaustion when concerns of being near nuclear radiation in eastern Europe became an issue). But even that wasn't the worst, compared to instances like Deep Purple faced in Jakarta the decade prior. Despite what Dokken faced in the 80s and what critics say about them, compare their history, and they really didn't come off too bad. And maybe breaking up at the height of their speed (like Roger killing that electricity) really *did* keep them from facing a true calamity.
Perhaps the WORST thing Dokken actually faced came in the 90s, where it's rumored George was on steroids (though he'll deny it, avoid-drama-at-all-costs Mick has even suggested it), and he became more physically violent, rather than just having a battle of wits with Don. His time ended with him physically choking Don on the bus, after he'd admitted to trying to sabotage the band with how he wrote Shadowlife. We can only speculate what else happened when there are interviews from 1999 where you can see how uncharacteristically bitter even Jeff is toward his best friend when asked about him. Despite all this, Dokken did make somewhat of a recovery with Erase the Slate, and eventually, everyone made amends -Jeff by 2002 at the earliest, Mick somewhere before 2012, and Don around 2016. It may still be soon to speak on Don and George, but for the others, even this is better than the pattern of some band mates who have "made amends" only to end up fighting and separated in just a matter of a couple years -if that. So, has Dokken had a calamity? Hell, yes. More than one. Did they end just about as well as they possibly could have? Given the situation, and the outcomes of similar cases, very likely so. (And I think they deserve credit for that, just like I'll give Keith credit for his good moments, even if I'm not a fan of his)

I’m aware I’m being very liberal with the screamo classification, but I think it’s more important to highlight bands that were relevant to the scene(s) rather than not. If you’re a purist who thinks Billy Talent and Alexisonfire don’t have anything to do with screamo, then you’re probably not from here. If anything there are even more bands that I feel could be added that had an impact musically but never had anything close to screamed vocals such as 2 Line Filler (1991), Slow Loris (1993), Venus Cures All (c. 1995), Sinclaire (1997), The Fully Down (1999), The Fullblast (2000), Slow Parker (c. 2001), DD/MM/YYYY (2003) and Siberia (2007), though I guess this paragraph was a workaround!
