--or perhaps,' continues Octavian. 'You're angry that I've outplayed you at your own game because you were too busy fucking in your old master's house to notice anything that was going on around you.'
He smiles suddenly, bright and wide. 'Enjoy the party, Marcus.'
this scene takes place sometime after philippi, and was originally just some historical fiction I was writing last year for fun focusing on antony, octavian, and agrippa. then I got stressed out watching the new season of a show, started drawing while it played, and ended up turning it into a short comic lmao
the dialogue in this scene is referencing this bit out of Suetonius:
In early youth he incurred the reproach of sundry shameless acts. Sextus Pompey taunted him with effeminacy; Mark Antony with having earned adoption by his uncle through unnatural relations; and Lucius, brother of Mark Antony, that after sacrificing his honour to Caesar he had given himself to Aulus Hirtius in Spain for three hundred thousand sesterces, and that he used to singe his legs with red-hot nutshells, to make the hair grow softer. What is more, one day when there were plays in the theatre, all the people took as directed against him and loudly applauded the following line, spoken on the stage and referring to a priest of the Mother of the Gods, as he beat his timbrel: "See'st how a wanton's finger sways the world?"
Suetonius Augustus 68
what a fun group of people!! they should all eat each other
#octavian#mark antony#komiks tag#roman empire tag#WOW it's been a minute since i got to use that tag#the bit of my own writing (technically all of this is my own writing but in the text part of the post) is referencing#some shit about antony letting the conspirators go ahead and assassinate caesar for his own ends#which is fun to think about bc octavian proceeded to pull a similiar move but better#the gods favor one of you for sure lmao#i favor neither of you except for where i sided with octavian bc his narrative potential appeals to me more

… can you … elaborate?? On the Roman republic empire thing? I mean is this That’s Interesting or an Oh Shit situation??
I might do a longer post with more details in a few weeks, but the short version is definitely Oh Shit.
There's an extremely polarising and power-hungry guy with rabid followers and he says he's into making the country great again because it has become decadent and weak. He's running to be king of a democracy which prides itself on having overthrown kings to become a balanced republic. He gains support by writing and publishing his own self-aggrandizing heroism with particular emphasis on the barbarity of foreign nations supposedly less civilised than his own, and even takes his armed supporters into the capital when he's faced with prosecution if he loses his chance to get back into office, which causes his political enemies to flee in fear for their lives. After he regains power and manages to bribe, threaten, kill, go to war with, or otherwise remove enough of the threats to his power, he is a dictator in all respects, but he's still saying it's democracy and he's not really a king. Even after he's assassinated and the Senate is tentatively trying to get back to how it was before the dictator consolidated power and cemented his office, the damage is already done, the seat is open for a new dictator, and once the bloody fighting over it is done, the democracy is dead and the Republic has become a monarchical Empire with one man in office for life who appoints his own successor. The new Empire kicks off with the passing of laws to encourage traditional values and higher birth rates, and the new emperor has already killed off enough of his enemies and collected their wealth to pay off the massive debts left by his dead predecessor. The assassinated dictator becomes literally deified and worshipped by an actual cult, and his name becomes synonymous with the office of dictator for the next several centuries of the country's history.
His name is Caesar.
#this is obviously wildly simplified#like this doesnt even get into the triumvirates or civil war. and im definitely not saying Vance is going to go the way of antony.#the end of the Republic was chaotic the way the last few years have been chaotic. so so so so much happened so fast.#and we have the actual text of letters written by these politicians to one another!! and the speeches they gave denouncing one another!!#my students read a bunch of these letters and speeches for our unit on Caesar and they are all saying how shockingly similar it is to now#so again - this is a criminally oversimplified arc phrased specifically to make this point clear without being distracted by specifics#asks#anon#my posts

man. I've been reworking a lot of content involving Act II of Home Is Where You Are and like. ugh. it'd work so freaking well in novel form but I just Do Not have the dedication or the drive to start from scratch and rewrite everything that happens.
idk how else to share the updated version of that part of the story with y'all tho, considering that Khalan's journal is insanely outdated now and isn't entirely canon anymore, so I'll probably just have to accept that I likely won't ever be able to update the story for y'all in the way I wish I could. >n<;;
#spectre says#text post#delete later probably#tbh i'm so tired of being tired#i've had like. no energy to write or draw#even tho. the ideas are there. i've got so many concepts going through my head that i could work on and turn into some kind of tangible art#i tried writing out a new outline for act ii but i got overwhelmed with all the changes and plot holes that still need working out#so idk if i'll even continue with that#even tho it's just bullet points#fhgdjkfg#anyway#the idea of writing everything in novel form just sounds like. SO perfect for the story as it is now#i'd love. to establish both khalan and antony as main characters and focus on what happens to both of them while in Atria#eventually having their stories collide when antony's side of things merges with what's going on with khalan and aya#it'd feel less jarring than how it worked out in the journal#because this part of the story is just as much antony's story as it is khalan and aya's#and he's ultimately the one who fixes things and has 'main character energy' by the end of that act#so establishing him as one of the tertiary main characters early on makes sense i think#but yeah. there's just a lot i'd need to do and i know i wouldn't be able to keep up with it if i did try to start writing.#IM JUST RAMBLING NOW IM SORYO#it's just been on the brain i guess

ANTONY cry 'havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war
earlier in my script (which is not Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar), Antony refers to Dolabella as one of his ‘dogs of war’ when talking to Cassius (which IS a reference to Shakespeare’s JC), and it comes back around after Cicero writes to Cassius and informs him of Trebonius’ fate
While these things were taking place at Rome, Cassius and Brutus were collecting troops and money, and Trebonius, governor of the province of Asia, was fortifying his towns for them. [...] Trebonius, who was captured in bed, told his captors to lead the way to Dolabella, saying that he was willing to follow them. One of the centurions answered him facetiously, "Go where you please, but you must leave your head behind here, for we are ordered to bring your head, not yourself." With these words the centurion immediately cut off his head, and early in the morning Dolabella ordered it to be displayed on the praetor's chair where Trebonius was accustomed to transact public business. Since Trebonius had participated in the murder of Caesar by detaining Antony in conversation at the door of the Senate-house while the others killed him, the soldiers and camp-followers fell upon the rest of his body with fury and treated it with every kind of indignity. They rolled his head from one to another in sport along the city pavements like a ball till it was completely crushed. This was the first of the murderers who received the meed of his crime, and thus vengeance overtook him.
App. Civil Wars III. 26
For Dolabella is in Syria, and, as you have foreseen in your prophetic soul and have foretold, Cassius will crush him while they are on their way. For Dolabella has had the gates of Antioch shut in his face and got a good beating in trying to storm it. Not trusting in any other city, he has betaken himself to Laodicea, on the sea-coast of Syria. There I hope he will speedily pay the penalty of his crime: for he has no place of refuge, nor will he much longer be able there to stand out against an army as large as that of Cassius. I even hope that Dolabella has by this time been overpowered and crushed.
Cic. Fam. 12.14
Place then before your eyes, O conscript fathers, that spectacle, miserable indeed, and tearful, but still indispensable to rouse your minds properly: the nocturnal attack upon the most beautiful city in Asia; the irruption of armed men into Trebonius’s house, when that unhappy man saw the swords of the robbers before he heard what was the matter; the entrance of Dolabella, raging,—his ill-omened voice, and infamous countenance,—the chains, the scourges, the rack, the armourer who was both torturer and executioner; all which they say that the unhappy Trebonius endured with great fortitude. A great praise, and in my opinion indeed the greatest of all, for it is the part of a wise man to resolve beforehand that whatever can happen to a brave man is to be endured with patience if it should happen.
Cicero, Philippic 11

#the actual line cassius has here is 'tell mark antony im going to kill his fucking dog' but it doesn't work without the context#of antony earlier calling dolabella one of his dogs. so. i have edited it slightly to provide that context#this is also the one thing that cassius doesn't forgive brutus for because it's brutus who wanted antony left alive#and the dots are simply that if antony was dead then trebonius would not be#brutus can get away with everything else in the name of love. but not that one#(i'll do anything for love but i wont do that etc)#you might say. hey. it doesn't seem like you like brutcass very much. incorrect! i love it a lot! i just want to make them worse#also one of the most romantic scenes ive ever watched in my life in a show was a breakup scene and ive been chasing that high#ever since. but mostly i think theres a tragedy to brutus’ decision making and there should be narrative consequences#roman republic tag#komiks tag#drawing tag#gaius cassius longinus#marcus junius brutus#gore cw#In appian’s text. it’s pretty gnarly tbh

sorry still thinking about the first landsmeet (if thats the word for that idk). teagan is wearing full armour do you think there's rules against that because it would make sense that if there was a meeting of the nobility everyone would be expected to not show up with weapons and armour as a show of goodwill etc. so do you think when teagan showed up like that everyone knew it was time to start picking sides very quickly.
#text#ohhh if i had more of the civil war stuff to chew on.#sorry im rewatching rome and i watched episode 2 and well i have an entire paragraph in my dissertation about what antony#showing up to a political meeting in armour represents (its civil war)#by which i mean the character based on the historical mark antony. not my hawke.

My favorite way to mess with Immortal Longings is thinking of it as a Julius Caesar retelling even though it really isn't. Like the implications it would have. The roles everyone would play. The most obvious way to mess with it in this way is Kasa as Julius Caesar and August and Calla as both some word mixtures of Cassius and Brutus. This would pretty much leave Anton as role-less in this idea.
It just occurred to me though that you could also view it through the lens of August as Cassius, Calla as Brutus, and Anton as Caesar. The arena scene? Calla stabbing him in the back? August manipulating her to get him to that point? Calla did it not because she didn't love Anton but because she loved Talin mor---- *gets trampled by a herd of sheep*
#someone stop me#immortal longings#flesh and false gods#anton makusa#calla tuoleimi#august shenzhi#i am playing with this text in ways it is probably not supposed to be played with#i will not shut up about how Chloe blurs the lines between julius caesar and antony and cleopatra

apologies for hbo rome posting but one thing i REALLY wish they'd developed more (and that they could have developed within the timeframe they had if they'd wanted) was the octavia/mark antony marriage. that's gotta be like the only ship on the show that actually has a fairly legit irl basis that they just completely ignored lol
#i mean i feel like it def has something to do with the fact that they made atia and antony lovers#at the same time though i think there is something sort of deliciously messy about octavia marrying her mother's lover.....#anyway if i had been writing that show.............#the failmarriage to end all failmarriages etc.#hbo rome#text

I haven't finished reading everything you've written about your characters, but I have two questions! What would their favorite food and/or snacks be and why? Is it something that's simply a matter of taste or does it hold a strong memory for them? It seems silly to ask but food can be very important to people, both the familiar and experimental.
And second question: Are there any biomes that your characters have found they love? (Real, minecraft, or original.) Traveling all over and seeing different places means your OC's probably have firsthand opinions, good and bad. ;)
ooooooh honestly I've thought about the food thing to an extent before! not so much on Antony's side of things for some reason, but definitely in regards to Khalan (and also kind of Aya by extension) ;o;
gonna also put this under a cut because boy howdy my responses tend to get so long hahaha xD
I know Antony's village has a heavy focus on apples as a main food product that has cultural and religious significance, so I do think that the smell and taste of apples is incredibly comforting and nostalgic for him. wine was also culturally-significant for his village, and Antony has a pretty refined palate in that regard as well. as far as specific foods go, though, I'm not entirely sure what he prefers yet. I'll have to give it some thought.
a bit of a trigger warning I suppose, but Khalan has... a complicated relationship with food. probably bordering on the lines of an eating disorder, if I'm being honest. he sees it as something that he has to "earn," because of how his dad would withhold food from him sometimes as punishment, so the idea of just. being Allowed to eat anything he wants whenever he wants is something that's really difficult for him to learn over time. he'll usually deny himself food if he feels he deserves it for whatever reason and feels incredibly guilty over the idea of enjoying it.
but there are some things he really does like, if he allows himself to. for one, he finds fresh bread to be comforting and versatile - he grew up farming wheat so he's used to the whole process of turning it into bread. it's one of those foods for him that makes him feel "safe" in a way, because it's familiar (it's also Aya's favorite, according to @cookieg122 ;u;). coffee is something else he enjoys, typically with cardamom and cinnamon ;o; he tends to like warm, savory, or spiced foods, but as far as sweets are concerned, he genuinely loves pumpkin pie the most - which is something he got to try for the first time at a tavern in Drehmal and immediately fell in love with it <3
ah! the traveling question!!! that one's a really exciting concept because all three characters (Khalan, Aya, and Antony) had never really left their places of origin until their respective story events take place. traveling was a huge culture shock for all of them, and they're constantly exploring new places, so they end up seeing SO many different biomes over time.
I'd say Khalan's personal favorite would be something like a temperate forest, especially within a mountainous region. he finds forests and rivers to be especially lovely, and the ability to scale a mountain to see so far into the distance from such an impossible height is incredibly thrilling for him... but it's also a location where he feels the most at peace during the day. he likes to catalogue what flora and fauna he comes across in a trail journal by drawing what he sees and describing it to the best of his ability (as I've done away with his cartography profession since it didn't fit as well anymore).
he's the kind of person who tends to consider most forms of nature to be beautiful and awe-inspiring, as it fills his creative mind with ideas and stories and poems and songs that he'll frantically write down whenever the inspiration hits. adventuring is difficult and dangerous, but looking back on his time in Drehmal, he only remembers the most romantic aspects of traveling because his brain blocked out a lot of the traumatic stuff.
however, his least favorite biome is definitely a frozen tundra. they were forced to camp out in a region like that before and he 100% ended up freezing to death a few times just to make sure that Aya was able to use whatever provisions they had so she could stay warm and survive;; not a fun time. another bad kind of area would be anything volcanic in nature, like the Hellcrags/Carmine within Drehmal.
Antony has a few he enjoys and hates, as well. his first impression of a different biome was the temperate sakura blossom grove that Khalan and Aya were staying in within Atria, as that was the first time he had ever traveled beyond his home village. but I don't really think he'd count that as a favorite location because being there was such a stressful and awful time for him, unfortunately. The Nether is obviously another location that has a lot of trauma attached to it for him, too.
as far as more positive experiences go, he's definitely most comfortable within a Mediterranean biome - since that's where he grew up - but he tends to enjoy warm, subtropical beaches and also finds a lot of beauty in the snowy northern mountains/taiga; two locations he only experienced within Bocca. temperature isn't exactly an issue for him after becoming a demigod (his body naturally regulates to adapt to whatever temperature he's in, meaning he's never uncomfortable unless we're talking extreme hot or cold), so he can enjoy a lot of environments without feeling the effects of the weather all that much. out of those two locations, however, I'd say he considers the snow to be the most magical - especially the day after a storm when it's all fluffy and sparkly in the morning sunlight ;o;
there's probably more that I'm missing tho but that's about all I can think of to cover those questions!! thank you so much for the ask, I genuinely appreciate the enthusiasm <33 take care! ;u;;
