Hobbies and sub-hobbies
I've been working on implementing a sub-hobby system in my game recently and really enjoying it! I took a look at the different activities available for different hobbies and came up with my list, which I thought I'd share here.
I do have some mods that change the hobby enthusiasm of some objects, or add new ones - I'll link where applicable.
I don't assign these based on any system, just vibes. I usually stick with whatever hobby the game assigns, but I do sometimes change them if it really feels like it doesn't fit to me. The sub-hobbies are intended to be a main focus, but Sims can and will still try other aspects of their overall hobby, and other hobbies altogether sometimes too!
The list is a work in progress but I'm basically happy with it now.
Edited: I found a version of the punching bag that gives fitness enthusiasm instead of sports, and that activity makes more sense to me as a fitness thing, so I moved that sub-hobby over.
Edited x2: Combined a couple gaming subhobbies into "Social Games" and added MyShuno to that category.
Edited x3: Combined sewing and knitting into Fibre Arts under Arts & Crafts hobbies.
Cuisine
Cooking
Baking
Wine & Cocktails
Foodie (restaurants, delivery)
Films & Literature
Reading
Writing (helpful but not necessary to also have this mod)
Movies
Tinkering
Restoring & Repairing (restorable car, general repairs, plus drafting blueprints thanks to a mod)
Woodworking (here and here)
Tinker Toys (RC cars, model trains, toy workbench)
Sports
Soccer
Basketball
Sports Fan (watching sports)
Golf (Execuputter reward object made buyable)
Baseball
Football
Music & Dance
Dancing
Ballet
Piano/Keyboard
Synthesizer
Violin
Singing
Guitar
Bass
Drums
Fitness
Swimming
Lifting & Cardio
Yoga
Boxing (with modded hanging bag from here - unlocked buyable punching bag still gives sports hobby, but it seems more like a fitness thing to me as a solo activity)
Arts & Crafts
Painting
Pottery
Photography (hugely aided by the buyable antique camera and Epi and PF's camera overhaul mod)
Fibre Arts (sewing, knitting with Eisbaer's edit of TonyVeis' 4t2 mod)
Science
Stargazing/Aliens
Biotech (buyable Biotech station and microscopes with science enthusiasm added)
Robotics (this mod makes robotics science related which makes far more sense to me)
Games
Video Games (console, handheld, computer, arcade games)
Board Games (chess, Don't Wake the Llama, mahjong)
Social Games (darts, poker, pool, bowling, MyShuno)
Nature
Entomology (hunting bugs, catching fireflies and butterflies)
Animals (small pets like womrats, birds, koi fish, bird watching)
Gardening (harvestable crops, orchard trees - I play with perfect plants mod so they don't have to maintain flowers and shrubs)
Outdoorsy (fishing, hiking, camping, cloud watching)
Flower Arranging (this mod changes the enthusiasm on the flower bench to nature)

i ran out of pic space
okay so to mention some other things we have learned, it was finishing furniture with shellac, leinen oil and wax, getting rid of insects, fixing old veneer and put on new, restoring broken wood pieces (as below, I've filled in an edge in this old cigar box and tinted it so it blends in, try to spot where)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We did welding (in case there is a hinge or something to be welded), moulding
Tumblr media
(with lead, but i suppose if i had a good temperature, I could do brass too) and so many other things i can't even remember. One of the best weeks (even though I am socially drained, our instructor was... an intense guy.)
I have also learned that an old table I found on the dumpster and took home is probably pre-war period btw. I don't think I would if not for the knowledge I got now
Okay, so the reason I decided to go to this course in the first place is that I *love* antiques and if I could only afford another degree I would absolutely go study conservation, but, for now, it's not possible, so I decided to find some course/workshops. And god damn this was the best idea ever.
Here is a drawer, finished. Apparently, a missing drawer is a common thing in old furniture so it's handy to know how to make one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made it from scratch, all there was at the beginning was two pieces of wood. Also, I decided to try inlay (and I loved it 100%).
Tumblr media
I also learned how to duplicate old keys by hand, because apparently no locksmith will do a key like that for a reasonable price anymore and old things sometimes miss a key.
Tumblr media
Some gilding. We also did schlagmetal on wood and clay, but this one is genuine gold on the cover of 19th century Bible so that's neat. The book itself was absolutely awesome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also did engraving in glass (it was surprisingly easy and pleasant, I loved it) and in metal, and we learned how to make new things look old (this frame was also made from scratch, from a very dusty piece of rather new wood). Neat.
And two things I am most proud of (actually there is one more, but it's a gift, so I'll show you after I give it to the person)
This is 19th century handle cover etched by me (I think metal etching is one of my favourite techniques from now on, for real)
Tumblr media
And a chair that we have been making a brand new cushion for (it's made in 18th-19th century fashion, with springs and all.)

Hey, quick question, is another piece for Underneath the Howling Moon in the works like a stand alone or a new chapter for In the Clutches of the Wolf's Jaws ? I read all of it again and resurrected my brainrot.
If not would you have some small facts and headcanons to give ?
Have a nice day
Oh you better believe there is another story in the works for Underneath the Howling Moon. And I am also working on another chapter for Clutches of the Wolf's Jaws, it's just a little slower because a lot of my brain rot has mostly been the little stories that took place before the current events of Clutches. But I do have some facts and headcanons to give out!
Bela is two years older than Cassandra, and Cassandra is a year older than Daniela. Making Bela and Daniela three years apart.
When the sisters transform into wolves, their clothes are left behind. Many clothing have been lost due to Cass and Dani transforming in the middle of nowhere in their estate.
Alcina has specific nicknames for her girls based on their traits as wolves. Bela: "My little shepherd." Cassandra: "My little bloodhound." Daniela: "My little pup."
The girls have middle names in this series! If Alcina calls out their full name then they know they're in deep trouble. Bela Josephine Dimitrescu Cassandra Milicent Dimitrescu Daniela Fiora Dimitrescu
Daniela was very sick when she was younger. I never went into details in the fic but she actually had aplastic anemia. Bela was a perfect donor for a bone marrow transplant that Daniela needed.
So in the current time of Clutches, the girls don't have jobs. The most is them working around the estate, Bela helping Alcina with paperwork, Cassandra in charge of the staff, and Daniela helping however she can.
Aside from Bela, none of the girls are trusted to get jobs outside of Alcina's business because they might end up revealing themselves. And Bela just prefers to work for her mother.
Hobbies!
Bela: Reading, considering she loves to learn. Not much romance like Daniela though she does have some soft spots for certain romance. Botany, absolutely considering I think she would love to cook and bake. Grows her own fruits, vegetables and so on. Definitely works for Alcina from time to time. Other hobbies would include playing the piano, and painting.
Cassandra: Loves to restore antiques. She likes to work with her hands. Probably is the family's own handywoman, happily getting dirty and fixing stuff. Absolutely loves to play the guitar too. Other hobbies would include some sports like hockey, and surprisingly dancing.
Daniela: Reading romance even though she loves to do physical activities with her boundless energy. Wouldn't be surprised if she does sports but she couldn't really settle on one thing. If she was asked what her favorite is, she would pick basketball. Other hobbies would include sculpting, and surprisingly sewing.
Clothing! This is something I'm taking from my friend who suggested what the girls should wear. I'm not normally keen on writing clothing so this should help gauge what everyone wears.
Bela: A casual chic/business casual style. As she’s the oldest who takes the most after Alcina and helps on the business end, it fits that she wants to make herself look presentable but approachable.
Cassandra: She wears a more casual/artsy style. As she’s the most physical out of the sisters she needs clothes that she doesn’t mind getting dirty and help her move around easier. But she still likes to look good so she mixes it up with fun and chic styles. Think like cute overalls and tank tops. But also some jackets too.
Daniela: The youngest and most energetic of the sisters, I could see her leaning more into the tomboy/sporty style. She’s a free spirit and the least likely to care too much about looking prim and proper. Plus, she’s running around all the time, it helps to have something more loose and easy to tear off when she transforms.
Alcina definitely punishes the girls differently whenever they're in trouble. Growing up, it was such a struggle because Cassandra would always talk back whenever she would lecture her. But Bela would become a sobbing and anxious mess if she were to talk to her the same way. It absolutely caused rifts between Cass and Bela in their teenage years. It's what led to Faults of a Mother.
That's it for now! I'll be thinking of more facts and headcanons, especially about Donna and Angie! Thank you so much for reading, it really makes my day to know there are some people who have massive brainrot for my silly yet heartfelt werewolf series!

This 1904 home is so elegantly restored. It's a Victorian in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, has 6bd 3.5ba and is listed for $1.399M.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at the lovely central hall entrance. They have lots of antiques, but if would also look fabulous with less furnishings and some color.
Tumblr media
You always get the custom made curtains with the house, so keep that in mind. The fireplace is so beautiful and I like the dark floors.
Tumblr media
The smaller 2nd sitting room also has a fabulous fireplace.
Tumblr media
The side hall is large enough for a baby grand piano.
Tumblr media
Isn't this a lovely home office?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is nice, a rounded every day dining room. It's got tons of natural light, a great view, and a door to the garden.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is amazing. It does not look like a kitchen- at first glance I thought it was a bath.
Tumblr media
I have never seen a more elegant kitchen. I wouldn't even want to cook in here to mess it up, it's decorated so beautifully.
Tumblr media
And, here's the formal dining room. Gorgeous.
Tumblr media
I'm loving this broody dark academia style room.
Tumblr media

I despise how they've handled Stella seeing as she had so much potential to be such an interesting character and add some depth to the whole story arch of Stolas cheating and essentially destroying his family because of his own selfish desires, but since Vivzie refuses to do anything interesting with her female characters I developed a lot of fun headcanons for Stella before she was complete butchered in the narrative;
Stella collects tea sets, she loves going to the hell equivalent of thrift stores to find older, maybe even damaged sets and attempts to restore them. Stolas gave her a galaxy themed set as a wedding present and its one of her favorite, she never uses it because she’s afraid to damage it.
Speaking of thrifting, Stella enjoys taking Octavia along on her thrifting outing, the two of them often visit antique stores together and love to collect pawned off heirlooms. The two of them love to speculate and develop stories of where they believe the heirlooms came from and how they ended up at this very store.
Similar to Octavia, Stella has a fascination for taxidermy and for a while in her youth would collect dead bugs and attempt to preserve them.
Used to read to Octavia to put her to sleep, her favorite book to read to Via was the Grim Brother’s Fairy Tales. She gifted Via the complete book collection as a birthday present one year. It’s one of Via’s cherished possessions.
Stella has a loud, infectious laugh a type of laugh you wouldn’t ever expect to come out of royalty. She was ridiculed for it by her parents, being told it wasn’t becoming of a lady to chortle so she opts to a proper quiet giggle when around other royals. Because of this belittlement she’s become quite self conscious of her laugh and only genuinely laughs on rare occasions or when she’s comfortable around someone.
Stella adores Stolas’ terrible sense of humor and his awful dad jokes, though due to her insecurities towards her laugh she tries hard to keep from laughing out loud when out and about, however sometimes she can’t help it.
Stella has a couple hobbies she enjoys and indulges in during her free time such as flower pressing, playing the piano, thrifting, gardening, calligraphy, and party planning.
Stella loves planning parties and will often times aid other higher ups and royal families in planning social events, charity events, and parties for any kind of occasion. She’s planned quite a few odd social events because of this, but its hell so that’s to be expected after all!
Has a strained relationship with her family due to their belittlement and ridicule. They cared for Stella but of course were more worried about molding her into a proper young lady so they could marry her off to a higher standing family, so their relationship now adays tends to be a little tense and strained. Continues to keep in contact with them out of obligation, and in a sense guilt.
Stella truly wished for a large family, however it was extremely difficult for the couple to conceive and Stella suffered multiple miscarriages. Via was a miracle in herself and the young couple were lucky enough to have carried one baby to term. After Via was born Stella suffered with some extreme postpartum depression. Because of all these hardships they did not attempt to have anymore children after Octavia.
Even though Stella and Stolas’ union was due to an arranged marriage, Stella never despised Stolas. Even though she hated having her autonomy taken from her at such a young age she still strived to be a good wife to Stolas in hopes that the two of them might be able to learn to properly love each other regardless of the circumstances.
At some point Stella believes she truly did fall in love with Stolas, so when the truth came out that Stolas had cheated, the betrayal hit her deep. She spiraled into a deep well of self doubt and depression. She had done everything she needed to right? After all, she had done everything her family had told her, she had been the perfect loving wife yet he still cheated. What was wrong with her? Was it her fault? Was she not good enough? What was it about that Imp that Stolas adored? How could he do this to their family? To her? To Octavia? Soon enough Stella became withdrawn and cold, choosing to keep her distance from Stolas all together. It didn’t help that Stolas appeared to harbor no guilt for his infidelity only continuing to rub salt in the wound as he continued to publicly pursue the affections of his impish little plaything.
Fuck it, if the Vivzie stans get Soft uwu Stolas in spite of every awful thing he's done and continues to do in canon, we can have soft Stella.

The Haunted Atlas
Deane House - Calgary, Alberta, Canada
51°02′43″N / 114°02′44″W
Haunted manor home with a violent history in Calgary, Alberta. The Deane House began as a luxurious private residence and is now a historical site with a restaurant.
History
The Deane House began as the vision of Superintendent Captain Richard Deane of the North West Mounted Police. At the turn of the 20th century, Deane was sent to the rough frontier town of Fort Calgary, located at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers. The existing superintendent's home at the fort was not good enough for England-born Deane and his wife, and so in 1906 he had a new home built. Construction cost was $6,200. When finished, the new home was the best residence in existence for someone in the mounted police.
Tragically, Deane's wife never got to live in the house, or even see it. She became ill and died in Lethebridge, Alberta. Deane lived in the manor home and performed his duties until the fort closed in 1914 and the land was sold to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. Deane went back to England. The railway company demolished all of the fort buildings except the house, turning it into a residence for the rail station agent. Within a year, the company moved the entire house to a different location on the property.
In 1929, the rail company sold the house to C. L. Jacques, an entrepreneur who moved the house again, across the Elbow River. The engineering job was remarkable for the time, and the move was featured in the media. In its new location, the Deane House became a boarding house and descended into seediness. The violent chapter in the house's history began.
In 1933, a suicide occurred there. A 14-year-old boy who suffered from epilepsy became despondent at the tauntings of his schoolmates and ended his own life in the attic. He lived in the boarding house with his father. During World War II, the house became infamous for prostitution, and military personnel were ordered to stay away from it. Jacques sold the house in 1943 to Alex Brotherton, who continued its operation as a boarding house.
A gruesome murder-suicide took place there in 1952. A man stabbed his wife to death in front of their two children and then killed himself. There are unconfirmed reports of other murders. A man was supposedly shot and killed on the front porch, and another man was said to be murdered inside.
Natural deaths occurred at the house too. Brotherton's daughter, Alfena Cunningham, died there in 1965 and Brotherton himself in 1968.
The house deteriorated, and in 1973 the city of Calgary stepped in and purchased it with the intention of restoring it in time for the city's centennial in 1975. A studio for artists and a teahouse existed there until the early 1980s. It then became what it remains today.
Haunting Activity
Stories of ghosts had been associated with the Deane House and grew during the 1960s and 1970s. An exorcism was performed in the 1990s, but ghost stories persisted.
The parlor of the house, now a bar, is one of the most active areas. The smell of pipe tobacco has been reported, even when no one is smoking. It is believed to be a sign of Brotherton, who used to like to sit in the parlor and smoke a pipe. Some visitors have seen his pipe-smoking apparition sitting in the bar. A nonworking telephone in the bar rings by itself.
Also active is the attic, where the epileptic boy committed suicide. Storage cupboards have a stain on them that resembles blood, which cannot be washed away.
The ghost of a Native American is seen in the house; no one knows his identity. He appears wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a vest; his long hair is tied in a single braid. One visitor saw the apparition in the basement. The man told her she should not be in the house because the site was sacred.
An apparition seen during the 1970s was that of a man in a black cloak, visible to the knees, who walks down the stairs and out the front door.
Other phenomena include an antique piano upstairs that plays by itself, the sounds of footsteps, strangely moving currents of air, as though someone is walking past, and objects that move about on their own.

Walking through the picturesque streets of Cardinal Hill, you find Tabitha Prior, the 29 year old owner of Shadow’s Curiosities originally from Cardinal Hill, WA. Living alongside them in such a small town, you know that they're affectionate and a perfectionist, but what you might not know is that they are a witch, and that they’re hiding something… ― Hannah Dodd, bisexual, cis woman, and she/her.
Basics
Name: Tabitha Elicot Prior Birthday: 4 March 1961, 9:02pm Natal Chart: Pisces sun, Libra moon, Taurus ascendant Positive Traits: affectionate, responsible, dedicated, sociable Negative Traits: perfectionist, anxious, self-blaming, self sacrificing Likes: family, antiques, history, fashion, magic, dancing, math & numbers Dislikes: being criticized, down time, trends, change Hobbies: cooking & baking, furniture restoration, sewing & quilting, piano
Appearance
Hair Color: platinum blonde  Eye Color: hazel Height: 5’6” Build: willowy Tattoos: tbd sisters inspired tattoo(s) Piercings: several ear piercings, nose ring Clothing Style: feminine and casual, lots of jewel and earth tones, likes paisley and floral patterns  Distinguishing Characteristics: tall forehead, mole above upper lip, high cheekbones, expressive face
Quick Facts
Everything about Tabitha screams delicate at first glance and, unless you’re unfortunate enough to cross her (usually by messing with her sisters), you probably won’t realize just how wrong that first impression is.
Tabitha is the prototypical eldest daughter, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. She loves her sisters, is very involved (possibly too involved) in their lives, and takes her responsibility of setting a good example for them very seriously. She sees no difference between her two full sisters and her three half sisters and she won’t tolerate anyone trying to insist that there is one. While Tabitha’s never had trouble getting along with people and making friends, her best friends always have been and always will be her sisters.
Tabitha loves all things magic and collects mentors like a magpie. She is always looking to learn new things and hone her craft; as a result she’s fairly powerful for her age. Her favorite form of magic is enchantments, but she’s proficient in all except for dark magic.
While she doesn’t share her mother’s outright distrust of humans, Tabitha is wary and reserved around them, unless she’s certain they already know about magic.
Tabitha is deeply connected to Cardinal Hill and hasn’t ventured terribly far outside of it. She’s never lived anywhere else, and the furthest away she’s ever traveled is visiting her sisters [details dependent on where they went to school and if any of them ever moved out of Cardinal Hill].
Tabitha started taking ballet lessons at the age of 7, and continued dancing all the way through high school. She wasn’t good enough to consider dancing in college or professionally, but she loved it. Even though it’s been more than 10 years since her last class, she still moves like a dancer.
Tabitha currently lives at her parents’ house in an apartment over the garage, ostensibly to give her some privacy and independence. In reality, her door is always open to her family, and she probably spends more time in the house proper than her apartment.
History
As the oldest Prior sister, Tabitha has the clearest memories of her birth father, and how things changed when their mother married Dorothy’s father. Because of this, Tabitha never fully warmed to him.
When Tabitha was 9, her powers started manifesting. Sometimes it was a new skirt that changed its color, sometimes it was a colored pencil that had fallen off the table reappearing in its proper place, sometimes it was the pictures in little Dorothy’s favorite book moving while Tabitha read it aloud.
In school Tabitha was something of a teacher’s pet, not because she was at the top of the class but because she was polite and helpful and always did her work on time.
Tabitha briefly considered going to college after high school graduation, but ultimately decided that she was needed at home, especially with all 5 of her sisters still in school.
She started working at Shadow’s Curiosities because she’d always been interested in objects with stories. The owner warmed to her, and soon began training her to take over the shop upon his retirement.
After a few years of working at the shop, Tabitha decided to get an associate degree in business administration at the local college, reasoning that it was a practical choice if she was going to be the owner of Shadow’s Curiosities one day.
Tabitha has been the official owner of the shop for a little over a year now, since her old boss decided to retire and spend his time traveling.

I always giggle when people romanticise old, antique pianos. Not restored but still historically accurate pianos, I really mean just... old ones. Where you don't do anything except using a duster now and then, or not even that.
You really don't want to play those, they sound terrible...
"This 19th century piano must sound beautiful!" - it'll give you a headache, that's what it'll do

Louis doesn't seem to want to show us the inside of your house. Will you do it please Daddy?
All right dears, as you wish.
Now, remember, this isn't QUITE the same house that Claudia burnt down because, well, Claudia burnt it down. Not to the ground, of course, it was rebuilt over the years, rented out as apartments. Jesse, in her time as a Talamasca agent, bought it out, began the process of ...excavating? Shall we say?, looking for proof of our time there. I owe the correct restorations of the paint and wall paper to her and her steamer. But it was I, friends and fans, who lovingly restored it, with the few original furnishings I could find, and other antiques dating from our time, and mostly modern things that LOOK right and that remind me of what we had, based on my memory. We lived here from 1800 to 1862, so as you might imagine, we changed and redecorated it several times over the years, to remain á la mode. So, like all restorations, I had to pick a year to work on, and I picked (mainly) the last years I remember, the last time I was happy here. So most of the decor and furnishings are from then. Sometimes I cheated, because I found something RIGHT, or an original piece (we sold things over and over. You'd be surprised what survives. ) Or something was particularly sentimental. Or I just wanted to. I'm restoring MY home, after all, not curating a museum.
Have I been accused of making life sized museums to times I was happy? I plead the fifth. (Did I use that right?)
Anyway, here are a few pictures. It's not completely finished yet, there's always more work to do, but I thought you might enjoy it.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Our formal parlor. Not that we entertained much. The columns were the very height of fashion in the early 1800s when we moved in. As time went on we updated our decor to the times, but I rather like the neo-classicism so those stayed throughout it's entire lifetime. Red was always my favorite color.
Tumblr media
My favorite part of the house. We went through several different harpsichords, before the pianoforte came into fashion, and then we went through several of those. I prefer the piano for versatility, though the sound of the harpsichord's plucked strings has always appealed to me. As we had so many pianos over the years the task of choosing one was difficult, but I went with this one, as it reminded me of the one Claudia took lessons on.
Tumblr media
The desk in Louis' study. You can tell what parts Louis decorated because the florals appear. Louis did most of the work of running our businesses and moving the money around that kept us afloat. I....helped. a bit. The wallpaper is genuine. Thank you, Jesse.
Tumblr media
Selfie! Louis is always on me for taking selfies in any available mirror, but I LIKED this shot. It's our library. Louis and are both avid readers, and we spent many happy hours here. I'm rebuilding our collection book by book. The mirror I'm posing so fetchingly in is actually a mirrored cabinet we had, full of curiosities. What can I say, we were Victorians, we liked to collect odd things. Of course, we were the oddest things in the house by far.
Tumblr media
Louis' room. We kept seperate bedrooms, for appearances sakes. Also, Louis needed his space, and my clothes (then as now) tended to get EVERYWHERE, so it was practical. Also, I'm not sure what's worse, people discovering we had only one bedroom because we were lovers, or that we didn't sleep there anyway because we were vampires. Either way, it was for appearances sake only. And unlike The TV Show We May Mention, we didn't have a handy rotating room to hide them, so we draped them with fabric and passed them off as chests or tables during the day. Care to guess what that daybed really is?
Anyway if the room looks a bit sparce, it's not just because Louis taste is simpler than mine. This room is simply unfinished. I wanted Louis to have a larger hand in its restoration, so it fits his memory and makes him happy.
Tumblr media
Her room. Also very unfinished. Honestly little more than a storage space for things we might do with it. This room was a paradise, believe me. Claudia redecorated often as she grew up, and eventually became the unoffical Lady of the house, a title we were glad to grant her (she had exquisite taste. Apparently the swan song of Claudia's decorating sensibility were her and Louis' rooms in Paris, but I never saw those.) So there are many decisions to make in how we want to do this room.
The shade of paint is correct, the original mural that Jesse discovered has since deteriorated, so not worth showing off just yet, and Claudia had a canopy bed with mosquito netting, but everything else....well...I was unable to proceed far into this room. Louis and I are going to work on it together. We'll get there.

FAV BOOKS THIS MONTH
hi
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil- Ohhhh my god I loved this book. It's so lovely so well written so fun and makes me want to drop everything and move to Savannah in the 80s?? The book essentially follows the main character, John Kelso, a writer/food critic from New York who spontaneously visits the beautiful southern city Savannah, Georgia on a trip to the south, falls in love with it, and decides to rent out an apartment and live there part time when he's not in New York for work. He gets involved with a bunch of strange and eccentric characters such as Jim Williams, a bachelor and an antique collecter who throws the most popular, classiest, exclusive parties in town in his large beautiful civil war era mansion, who helped revive historic Savannah and restore it into the lively city it is in the book. John makes friends with Joe Odom quickly, attracted by the constant sounds of piano playing and voices coming from Joe's apartment, a bar owner who's house is in a constant state ofcelebration, with friends and acquiantances freely flowing in and out of his houses(that he cannot afford, he's essentially a "glorified squatter" as the book calls him, he's constantly moving around) Joe is constantly in trouble with the law for some reason or another, yet he always seems to wiggle his way out. There's Chablis, a beautiful black drag queen who essentially uses our main character as a chauffeur. A mystery unfolds at some point in the story, but I will not spoil! There are so many interesting characters in this book holy shit and this book just feels like a love letter to savannah, definitely reccomend this book.
Big Swiss- EXTREMELY different from the first one but loved it equally, the main character is Greta, a woman in her mid 40s, and a very morally questionable yet very funny character, and the reader gets to constantly listen in on her absurd internal monologue. She works as a transcriber for a sex therapist, a man named Om in Hudson, New York, however she writes the meetings from audio files in the security of her own home (an old dutch house in shambles that is infested with a bee hive that Greta and her roomate Sabine, an old friend have to coexist with) . Greta has moved around her entire life after the suicide of her mother when she was thirteen, constantly being taken in by aunts or uncles. She ends up falling in love with one of Om's clients that she has never met based solely off of the audio files. The client's name is Flavia, however Greta refers to her as Big Swiss. Big Swiss is from switzerland, she is a tall, blonde, beautiful gynecologist in her late 20s, who has never had an orgasm despite being married and regularly having sex. Big swiss's sharp, cold, no bullshit nature is what draws Greta towards her. They eventually end up meeting, and disaster unfolds after. This book is so witty, the dialogue is so good, and getting to read Greta's transcriptions of various client's sex therapy sessions is so entertaining. Her actions are horrible at times, yet she's strangely likeable? Definitely reccomend, the simplistic writing style made it a very fast read for me.

Piano Restoration Melbourne: Revitalize Your Instrument
Pianos are not just musical instruments; they are cherished heirlooms, centerpieces of homes, and gateways to artistic expression. Over time, even the finest pianos can experience wear and tear, losing their tonal quality and visual appeal. For those in Melbourne, preserving and revitalizing these beloved instruments is now easier than ever with Hendry Pianos’ expert piano restoration services. Here’s why restoring your piano with Hendry Pianos is an investment worth making.
The Importance of Piano Restoration
Tumblr media
Piano restoration is a meticulous process that involves repairing, refinishing, and rejuvenating an instrument to bring it back to its original glory or even enhance its quality. Here’s why you might consider restoring your piano:
Preserve Sentimental Value: Many pianos are family heirlooms, passed down through generations. Restoring these instruments preserves their sentimental value and keeps family traditions alive.
Enhance Sound Quality: Over time, pianos can lose their tonal quality. Restoration can bring back the rich, vibrant sound that made you fall in love with the instrument in the first place.
Cost-Effective: A full restoration can be more cost-effective than buying a new, high-quality piano. It allows you to retain a superior instrument at a fraction of the cost.
Aesthetic Appeal: A restored piano is not only a musical asset but also a beautiful piece of furniture that can enhance the décor of any room.
The Hendry Pianos Difference
At Hendry Pianos, we understand the deep connection pianists have with their instruments. Our restoration services in Melbourne are designed to honor that connection, bringing each piano back to life with meticulous care and attention to detail.
Comprehensive Assessment
The restoration process begins with a thorough assessment of the piano. Our experts examine every aspect, from the soundboard and strings to the action and exterior finish. This detailed evaluation helps us understand the unique needs of your piano and develop a tailored restoration plan.
Skilled Craftsmanship
Our team of skilled craftsmen has years of experience in piano restoration. They use traditional techniques combined with modern technology to ensure the highest quality results. Whether it’s replacing worn-out hammers, repairing the soundboard, or refinishing the cabinet, every step is performed with precision and care.
Quality Materials
We believe that the quality of materials used in restoration is just as important as the craftsmanship. Hendry Pianos sources the finest materials, from premium-grade wood for soundboards to high-quality strings and action parts. This ensures that your piano not only looks stunning but also performs flawlessly.
Refinishing and Rebuilding
The aesthetic restoration of a piano is as important as its mechanical repair. Our refinishing process restores the piano’s exterior to its original luster or can even enhance its appearance with custom finishes. We also rebuild key structural components to ensure the piano’s longevity and stability.
Tuning and Voicing
Once the physical restoration is complete, our technicians focus on the piano’s tonal quality. This involves tuning the strings and voicing the hammers to achieve the perfect sound. Our goal is to ensure that your piano sounds as beautiful as it looks, offering a rich, dynamic range that meets your musical preferences.

Our dedication to excellence has earned us a reputation as Melbourne’s premier piano restoration service. Here’s what some of our satisfied customers have to say:

Maintaining Your Restored Piano
After restoration, maintaining your piano is crucial to preserving its condition and sound quality. Here are some tips to help you keep your piano in top shape:
Regular Tuning: Schedule regular tunings to maintain the piano’s sound quality. Ideally, a piano should be tuned at least twice a year.
Proper Environment: Keep your piano in a stable environment with consistent temperature and humidity levels. Extreme fluctuations can affect the wood and tuning.
Cleaning: Dust the piano regularly with a soft cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals on the finish.
Professional Maintenance: Periodically have your piano inspected by a professional technician to address any minor issues before they become major problems.

Is old antique piano worth being cared for?
Recently i received a phone call from a customer asking me if I could tune an old antique piano. She said: "I have been looking for a piano tuner near me and has had two piano tuners turned up and refused to tune my old piano." I asked her what was the reason they gave her for not be able to tune it. To my dismay, she said those piano tuners in Sydney merely opened up the lid and had look then told her it was not tunable. They didn't even mention any potential piano tuning cost. Have to say, this sounds to me is not good enough. At least we should treat our customers with respect they deserve. Old piano is surely tunable and not all new pianos are that easy to tune either. For many times I have come across pianos that was less than 30 years old but so difficult to tune, typically with a lot of loose tuning pins, very noisy overtones. I decided to take on this “ challege “ so I book her in for a tuning service the next day.
Having said that old piano is tunable, these old pianos indeed have some challenges to service and I kind of understand why some piano tuners would not want to spend time tuning them.Antique pianos are beloved for their rich history and unique aesthetic, but they often come with a range of challenges due to their age and wear, quite often they need expertise from piano tuner or piano technicians to carry out piano repair work or even a full piano restoration. Here are some common problems that owners of antique pianos may encounter:
Tuning Stability: Over time, the tuning pins and pinblock in antique pianos can become loose, leading to tuning instability. This can cause the piano to fall out of tune frequently, requiring more regular tuning to maintain pitch stability. Worn Action Parts: The action of an antique piano, including hammers, dampers, and other moving parts, can become worn and sluggish, affecting the touch and responsiveness of the keys. Replacing or refurbishing these parts may be necessary to restore proper functionality. Cracked Soundboard: Antique pianos may develop cracks in the soundboard due to changes in humidity and temperature over the years. These cracks can negatively impact the instrument's tone and resonance, requiring professional repair to mitigate the damage. Ivory Key Issues: Many antique pianos feature keys topped with ivory, which can become discolored, chipped, or loose over time. Ivory has been banned around the world so it is nearly impossible to replace damaged key tops with ivory. The only way to get hold of ivory key top is to salvage from old junk pianos. Most of the time those ivory key tops are replaced with modern plastic key tops. Structural Instability: The wooden components of antique pianos may suffer from structural issues such as warping, splitting, or loose joints. Addressing these problem require a lot of time and resources and often comes with a hefty cost.
Owners of antique pianos should always work with experienced piano technicians. Regular maintenance and proactive care can help preserve the beauty and functionality of antique pianos for generations to come.
Owning an antique piano is more than just owning a musical instrument; it carries with it a rich history and sentimental value that transcends time. Each scratch, worn key, and faded finish serves as a gateway to the past, preserving the memories and emotions of its previous owners. As I carefully tune these antique pianos, I often find myself marveling at the stories they hold within their elegant frames. These pianos have likely witnessed numerous family gatherings, heard the laughter of generations, and provided solace during moments of both joy and sorrow. They have been the soundtrack to countless life events, from weddings and birthdays to quiet evenings spent in contemplation. Owning an antique piano is a way of capturing a piece of history, connecting us to an era that is long gone but not forgotten. It serves as a tangible link to our roots, evoking a sense of nostalgia and bridging the gap between the past and the present. For many, inheriting or acquiring an antique piano symbolizes a cherished legacy, a tangible heirloom that represents the enduring love for music and tradition within a family. Moreover, the craftsmanship and unique character of antique pianos add to their intrinsic value. Each instrument is a testament to the artistry and dedication of the craftsmen who meticulously constructed it, often using techniques and materials that are rarely found in modern pianos. The resonance of the aged wood, the gentle patina of the keys, and the delicate intricacies of the ornate design culminate in a work of art that transcends its utilitarian purpose. In a world where everything seems to move at an accelerated pace, the presence of an antique piano serves as a gentle reminder to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the past. Its enduring allure lies not only in its melodic notes but also in the profound emotions and memories it invokes. It stands as a silent witness to the passage of time, a treasure to be cherished and passed down through generations, ensuring that the legacy of music and sentiment perseveres.
