is also in. nearly pristine condition

sorry for sharing her nudes but I need to impress upon all of you just how INSANELY PERFECT she is

like

besides the missing fingers and floppy worn-out elastic, I could not do better if I went back in time and bought her new from the store, and that's only BARELY an exaggeration

see how shiny she is? that's varnish on her composition body

that varnish has remained 99.9% intact. for approx. 120 years. no scuffs. no cracks. no gesso loss. nothing

she's marked too:

that extremely legible and crisp mark on her perfectly varnished lower back? yeah. also 120 years old

I was totally prepared to do a Before And After but honestly the After will just be "she's been restrung and her wig no longer looks ike a mohair UFO [deflated Gibson Girl pompadour probably; I can Reinflate it["

oh and did I mention the last owner. sent a neatly handwritten description of her provenance in a little labeled plastic sleeve, along with a bunch of other family ephemera and artifacts? including a ring that belonged to her first owner and fits me perfectly?

like who are these people and what did I do to deserve them finding me??

Lady Matilda update: she is restored!

I got her hands rebuilt and restrung her, and that was honestly all that the doll herself needed because of her incredible state of preservation:

Then I got her re-dressed and I wanted to show you all her layers.

These drawers which, while not TOTALLY obsolete in 1905 when she was new, would have been a bit old-fashioned in design for a modern fashion doll when combinations were more popular. So they may have come from an older doll in the family.

This slip which is out of time in the other direction- it's very 1920s and has a little ribbon with a snap between the legs to make it an "envelope chemise" of the time. She apparently once had some 1920s dresses and her first little girl's children were of an age to play with her at that point, so maybe this was their contribution to her lingerie

It has lovely ribbon detail

And then her dress, in two pieces, of a lovely white silk with faded blue stripes. This one I'm guessing is ORIGINAL original; it looks right fashion-wise. I had to move the hook at the waistband a bit to make it fit snugly, but she had more undergarments once, including a little corset, so that may account for the looseness

(She does have shoes and stockings, but the stockings are rather holey, so I'd like to replace them)

And of course I restyled her wig! It had the original pins, so I was able to fluff it up where it had gotten deflated over the years.

She also has a little gold-filled necklace, on which I've put a book locket with photos of her little girl's grandparents (maybe? The last owner wasn't sure; I'm going by clothing dates) that I was very generously also sent. Just to keep her family with her. But I forgot to get a picture with it

And now she is ready for new adventures!
