Inner binding from the Beaupre Antiphonary, Vol. 3 makes a beautiful work of art on its own in a combination craftsmanship and the vicissitudes of age. Illuminated in Hainaut ca. 1280 and completed in 1290, this collection of richly illuminated Cistercian manuscripts is a rare example of those being produced in Flanders at the end of the thirteenth century.

In addition to these various styles, each region within Europe exhibited an artistic style in a very distinct way, meaning that some Medieval Art pieces varied greatly from region to region despite being created within the same time period. These art phases have come to be seen as Early Christian Art, Byzantine art, Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque art, and Gothic art. Influenced by the artistic heritage of the previous Roman era and the iconographic customs of the early Christian Church, the Medieval period existed as an amalgamation of these artistic heritages.ĭue to this fusion of styles, Medieval Art essentially went on to produce some incredibly iconic artworks due to the distinct artistic style that developed.ĭue to the vastness of the Medieval Art period, the movement can generally be divided into a number of distinct periods and styles. Originating in Northern Europe after the Roman Empire collapsed, Medieval Art included some of the most major art movements and periods known to develop within art history. 7.4 Notre Dame de Paris (built between 1163 – 1345 A.D.).7.3 Palatine Chapel (built between 790 – 805 A.D.).7.2 The Lindisfarne Gospels (written between 715 – 720 A.D.).Contributors approach the concept of medieval abstraction from a multitude of perspectives-formal, semiotic, iconographic, material, phenomenological, epistemological. Coffee With A Codex: Antiphonary
Join us on Zoom every Tuesday at 12pm Noon EDT / 5pm BST to look at manuscripts from Penn’s collection in an informal environment.
On September 27, Curator Dot Porter will bring out Ms. Codex 1590, a Secular (as opposed to monastic) antiphonary for liturgical use in Lyon, containing the chants of the Divine Office for major feasts and Sundays. Written in France, probably Lyon, in the last quarter of the 13th or first quarter of the 14th century.
The event is informal and everyone is welcome to attend.

This miniature was excised from an antiphonary (one of the principal choir books of Catholic devotion) painted by Lorenzo Monaco for the Camaldolese convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli, Florence. The initial C introduces one of the responses for the celebration of the Office of the Dead: "Credo quod redemptor meus vivit, et novissimo die terra resurrecturus sum, et in carnee mea videbo Deum, Salvatorem meum" (I believe that my Redeemer lives, and that on the last day I shall rise from the earth and in my flesh I shall see God, my Savior). Inside the initial, the bust-length figure of Christ, his right hand raised in judgment, emerges from a bank of clouds set against a burnished gold background. To his right, an angel blows the trumpet of the Last Judgment. Below them, the dead emerge from cracks in the rocky ground, their hands clasped in prayer. (from the MMA catalog)
