Saccharina Frostwhip is the worst d20 PC ever she makes me so mad. Shows up halfway through the campaign with cleric levels that don't make sense and then makes it all about her for the rest of the season. Honestly coc is my least favorite season by a mile and it's at least 80% based on saccharina being annoying as fuck. Emily has made Good characters before for sure, I love Sundry Sydney and Sophie Bikes a whole lot but saccharina was awful.

I realize I'm narrow/late casting what was apparently a contentious opinion like 4 years ago, but I'm finally watching A Crown of Candy, and I gotta say I get why people don't like Saccharina. No hate to Emily at all, I think getting mad at the player for this is fucking stupid, but directly after Jet, the forward, somewhat bumbling but spunky and well meaning princess who wants to make magic legal through taking the throne dies, we get the secret half-sister who is the only high-tier caster in the setting so far that isn't a straight up minor deity who wants all of the exact same things Jet wanted, and instantly has more utility than Jet AND is the only legitimate heir to the throne, making her the central chess piece. That kinda sucks. Theres a very palpable feeling of genuine replacement there because of the similarities that at least I personally felt.

And then her character has built in anti-party synergy because shes replacing Jet in Ruby's eyes and is representative of Amethar's well-meaning but abysmal parenting, and everyone else doesn't really have a way in or time to meaningfully connect to her. To say nothing of the fact that shes from a secret side faction in Candia that the party is going to have to learn to trust directly after being turbo betrayed like 2 times in 3 days or whatever. So we end up with a character who is sort of just a straight mechanical upgrade that serves all of Jet's functions narratively and, because shes played by the same player, inevitably has a lot of personality overlap.

Keep in mind we JUST put Jet in the ground, and we're STILL trying to adjust to Cumulous, who is cool and different enough to Lapin to feel distinct, but doesnt take up the same narrative weight Lapin left behind, so feels sort of out of focus. And like, on a personal level I was already kind of frustrated with the Rocks sisters because of how often they fucked around and found out in a setting where finding out is THE deadliest thing possible, which is why Jet's death was so good because it would force growth. One of them died, and the other has to learn to grow past impetuous childhood to become a genuinely revolutionary adult.

I'm not finished with ACoC yet, but I'm really disappointed cause I usually really love Emily characters, but the tone and focus shift here is just so huge that it feels jarring. Again though, dont get mad at the players, thats stupid.

I have so many thoughts about Ruby and Saccharina. How much they're both hurting, how much their grief makes the lash out.

Saccharina, who probably dreamed of days her biological family would show up, only for her father to be distant and awkward, and her sister, little sister she could of had two, just full of rage and hate, all directed at her. Spurring so many attempts to be closer. To finally have a family, and they're nothing what you expected them to be. Not like she's had much experience with families anyway.

And Ruby, who has only been eighteen for a few weeks, weeks that arent with Jet, losing all she had. Her twin sister, who up until her death probably hadn't spent a single day apart. It must be like losing a part of you, you can never get back. And suddenly this stranger shows up, and she's supposed to be your sister and queen, a role that had always been Jet's.

Saccharina looked at Ruby and thought, sister?

Ruby looked at Saccharina and thought, replacement.

And the tragic thing is, for now, neither of them are right.

This blog is slowly becoming Anti Saccharina. She’s really cool, but that speech to Ruby after the fight was just unnecessary.

Since I’m about to post a lot of pro-Ruby (and thus somewhat anti-Saccharina stuff) I just want to point out no hate to Emily or how she plays the character. We still stan and honestly I’ll be hyped regardless of whether this ends in happy families or some sort of PVP with the marauders.

This blog may be on Ruby’s side, but that doesn’t mean I condone any hate towards the players and neither should anyone else.

not to be like. anti saccharina bc i am the farthest thing from that believe me i love her so goddam much that's my queen but. her argument of "well my pain is worse bc it's been happening longer" to ruby's "my pain is here right now and you are a living embodiment of who jet wanted to be and that's hard" is so. ugh i like cant vibe with it?? like i 100% understand and get the shit man she's been looking forwards to meeting these people her WHOLE LIFE but like. also maybe just. maybe have a bit of emphathy that goes beyond "hey i helped u out :)"

I hate when people say that disliking Saccharina is misogynistic. Because newsflash. Feminism is about equality, which includes acknowledging that women can be shitty too.

Also. The fact that she's an incredibly powerful character with a tragic backstory isn't even what bothers me about her. It's how she treats Ruby.

It's the insensitivity to Ruby and Amethar's grief. For fuck' sake, Ruby hadn't even said anything yet after delivering the killing blow to the Sugarplum Fairy and Saccharina immediately assumed Ruby would take full credit and be thankless. And then Saccharina also kept complaining about Ruby not warming up to her, when she never actually reached out to this grieving person to have some kind of decent heart to heart. Then there's considering having Ruby murdered after Ruby finally felt a little bit more ready to accept her, after finally getting closure with Jet.

Just cuz she's never experienced the same loss, doesn't mean she gets a pass to be so insensitive to others. That doesn't mean their tragedies should be some kind of pissing contest. Cuz that's what she was doing, every time Ruby and Amethar express grief and distrust after the shit they went through, Saccharina's so quick to go "well I never grew up with you all and my past is so so tragic." It's so invalidating. Like when people in real life tell you you can't be upset cuz you don't have it the worst. And that's So shitty and infuriating.

Yk I usually don't give my opinions about fandom stuff but this Crown of Candy stuff has been on my mind so I felt like giving my two cents. This whole like "anti-saccharina" stuff is like so silly to me and I know people don't like because she isn't the best person. However, I feel that she doesn't have to be? Like no dnd character has to super nice and good. And I know this isn't like a revolutionary thought but idk. And while it would be great to have her get along with the rest of the party and especially Ruby I feel like this situation makes more character wise and is really interesting. Ofc I understand people criticising Saccharinas actions but like- idk picking a side and creating discourse just isn't cool. Especially if you're just completely shitting on her character man not cool

Every popular D20 ship :pensive: I truly get super excited about a ship, genuinely expect it to be the next big popular one, and then log on to the internet and discover that I am so wildly off base it’s comical. I don’t really get Fabriz, I don’t get Theo/Lapin, I don’t get Leiland/Markus (although I do support it)...it would be nice if I could be into something that literally anyone else cared about. Oh!!!
