Voices In Struggle: Remembering Tortuguita + Resistance in Lützerath and Against Tren Maya

This week on The Final Straw, we feature three segments: words from a friend of Manuel “Tortuguita” Teran, the forest defender killed by law enforcement on January 18th outside of Atlanta, Georgia; A-Radio Berlin’s conversation with an activist at Lutzerath encampment in western Germany attempting to block a lignite coal extraction operation by RWE; a discussion of the Tren Maya megaproject by the AMLO administration in Mexico.

Remembering Tortuguita

First up, we caught up with Eric Champaign of Tallahassee, FL, about his friend Manny, aka Tortuguita or little turtle. Manuel Teran was shot and killed by law enforcement during an early morning raid of the forest encampment to defend the Welaunee aka Atlanta Forest and to stop CopCity on Wednesday, January 18th, 2023. Law enforcement claimed in the media that they responded to shots fired and the wounding of an officer by killing the shooter, but at the time of this release the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has not yet produced a weapon or bodycam footage of the clash. [Update, Georgia Bureau of Investigation claims they found Tort's gun and ballistics match the bullet in the pelvis of the cop] The killing of Tortuguita has sparked outrage, calls for independent investigations, vigils and calls for renewed and dispersed activity. Word is that another 6 people were arrested and charged with domestic terrorism during the raid. We are the immediate coal exit. From 19 to 24 June we set ourselves against the destruction of the earth in the Rhineland and block the coal infrastructure.

The time to act is now. Droughts, heat waves, floods – we have known it for a long time. The climate crisis is already a destructive reality for people all over the world – especially in the global South. And yet we are supposed to burn another 20 years of coal here? We’re not going to be put off with that. We will not be pacified! We are no longer watching how politics and corporations destroy our future. We are taking the coal phase-out into our own hands – and we do it now!

In the Rhineland, the coal corporation RWE wants to create facts: Excavators are constantly digging their way into the countryside, swallowing up forests, fertile farmland and entire villages. As the largest CO2 source in Europe, the lignite industry in the Rhineland is destroying the future of people all over the world. We stand up to this! Last year we fought with thousands of other people in a broad alliance for the Hambi (Hambacher Forest). This year we stand side by side with all the people whose homes are being destroyed by coal and the climate crisis. In solidarity with the people from Keyenberg, Kuckum and the other villages at the Garzweiler opencast mine, we want to stop the destruction on site. Therefore we will block the coal infrastructure. This is our immediate measure for global climate justice. All villages remain – in the Rhineland and worldwide!

Disobedient for a just future for everyone

We need not only the phasing out of coal, but also radical social change. We need to overcome capitalism with its growth constraint and exploitation mechanisms. Otherwise neither a serious fight against the climate crisis nor social justice worldwide will be possible. The catastrophic outcome of the Coal Commission shows that we cannot rely on politics. Now it is up to us!

The movement for climate justice is picking up speed: hundreds of thousands of people are protesting on the streets. Together, we are now going one step further and disobeying civil law. From 19 to 24 June 2019, we are using our bodies to block the coal infrastructure in the Rhineland.

Our form of action is an openly announced mass blockade with many opportunities for participation. We will behave calmly and courteously, no escalation will emanate from us, we will not endanger any people. We want to create a situation that is transparent for all participants and in which we respect and support each other.

Now that it's debunked, if you go on tiktok at the video where you hear the fan yelling my boyfriend, they're all calling larries delusional. Like I totally gave into the hype cause it was just such a crazy day with the LNT video and RWE soulmate quote. But again, you took your time and did research to try and figure out the July date and what it was. So thanks to all you who are the mature ones and don't freak out over everything. Without you guys this fandom would be a much bigger mess than it is now.

Yeah, I think people need to find what part of the fandom works better for them, where they can have a better experience. It's not necessarily about people though, I don't think. I think what makes tumblr really great is that we have archives, we can tag posts and then we can easily go back to them and check information, theories, facts, etc. And that gives a better picture of everything, that's why we see a lot less anxiety and drama around here, having stuff within reach gives us a sense of we know what is going on, things are not messy, not reason to panic and spread stuff without being sure about it. Plus, something that I’m forever grateful about tumblr is that we can easily stay on our lane, it’s much harder for larries posts show up for antis, for example, and also the other way around. You kind of need to go their blogs and dig for something, while on twitter you’re being harassed every five minutes. We can “contain” things much better, our posts are not all over the place.

Putin Says Hostile States Will Be Made to Pay for Gas in Rubles! Big If True

Editor’s Note: Ingenious as it would force EU to have to circumvent its own sanctions, and to strengthen the ruble which it has been working to tank.

I also like that it would potentially force fiscal discipline on Moscow and preclude ruble printing. That is, if new ruble-denominated contracts are eventually signed. However it’s more likely that Moscow would simply demand whatever is the momentary ruble equivalent of the contractual euro price. Not just in the short term but also in the long-term.

Let’s see if Russia is serious enough about this to make it happen or if this is a bluff.

Euroweenies are complaining that this is a “breach of contract,” meanwhile they have “frozen” hundreds of billions of euros that Russia earned from previous gas sales.

At the same time, it should be said that Gazprom was already converting 80% of its earnings into rubles so going to 100% rubles isn’t going to have a massive impact on the ruble valuation, but it is a nice troll move against the Europeans indeed.

Russia plans to demand ruble payments for natural gas purchases from European nations, deepening its standoff with the west and potentially aggravating Europe’s worst energy crunch since the 1970s.

Gas prices surged more 30% after President Vladimir Putin ordered the central bank to develop a mechanism to make ruble payments for natural gas within a week at a meeting with his government.

Putin’s move showed a growing willingness on both sides to use Russian energy supplies as a weapon in the struggle between Moscow and the west over the war in Ukraine. The specifics of the new arrangement weren’t immediately clear, but by demanding payments in rubles, Putin is essentially forcing European companies to directly prop up his currency after it was sent into free-fall by [the theft of $300 billion in Russia’s reserves] sanctions placed on the Russian economy. The ruble gained 7% against the dollar Wednesday, trimming its losses this year to 23%.

Germany, the biggest buyer of Russian gas, said the announcement on ruble payments is a breech of the contracts, and the nation will speak to its European partners on how to respond, according to Economy Minister Robert Habeck. Italy, the second-biggest customer of Gazprom PJSC, the Russian state export monopoly, said it wasn’t inclined to pay for Russian gas in rubles because it could help Putin weaken Europe’s sanction regime.

“My view is is that we pay in euros because paying in rubles would be a way to avoid sanctions, so I think we keep paying in euros,” Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s economic adviser Francesco Giavazzi said at the Bloomberg Capital Market Forum in Milan.

For the utilities who buy gas from Gazprom, the demand to pay in rubles could lead to disputes and contract negotiations, threatening to disrupt the smooth supply of gas to the region. Europe gets about 40% of it gas from Russia and is already grappling with fallout of record prices this winter. German energy giants Uniper SE and RWE AG declined to comment, as did Italy’s Eni SpA.

“If Gazprom refuses to deliver gas when buyers pay their invoices in the original contract currency, usually euros, buyers may bring the case to arbitration,” said Anise Ganbold, an analyst at Aurora Energy Research.

European gas benchmark surged as much as 34% after Putin’s demand, climbing as high as 132.74 euros a megawatt-hour and reigniting a wild rally in prices. The measure applied to country’s deemed “hostile” include the U.S, U.K. and all members of the European Union.

“I have taken a decision to switch to ruble payments for our natural gas supplies to the so-called hostile states,” Putin said on Wednesday.

The ‘hostile’ states accounted for some 70% of Gazprom’s 2021 export revenue amounting to some $69 billion, Dmitry Polevoy, economist at Moscow-based Locko Invest, said in an emailed note. Any changes to the payment procedures could “temporarily affect” Russia’s gas export volumes, he said.

Russia needs to stop using “the compromised currencies” in natural-gas transactions in retaliation to the U.S. and European sanctions, Putin said, according to a transcript published on the Kremlin website. “It’s pretty clear that it makes no sense for us to supply our goods to the European Union, to the U.S. and receive payments in dollars, euros, other currencies,” he said.

Within a Week

Some 58% of Gazprom’s gross gas sales abroad were in euros as of the third quarter of last year, according to the producer’s most recent bond prospectus. Another 39% were in U.S. dollars. The press office of Gazprom declined to comment on whether its long-term supply agreements allow a switch to ruble payments.

“Gazprom would need to ask buyers to agree to change the payment terms in contracts,” said Trevor Sikorski, head of natural gas, coal and carbon at Energy Aspects Ltd. “It reopens the contracts, and buyers could ask for shorter-terms for instance.”

OMV AG said its natural gas supply contracts with Russia don’t stipulate payment in rubles, and the Austrian energy company will continue paying in euros pending change in contract, Alfred Stern, chief executive officer, said in an interview with Austria’s Puls 24 television.

Russia announced earlier this month a list of 48 states deemed hostile. They included the U.S., Japan, all European Union members, Switzerland and Norway. As a result, the bulk of Russian gas exports now go to “unfriendly” nations.

Putin ordered his government to instruct Gazprom to start working on needed amendments to current contracts, adding that there’s no plan to change price formulas — only the currency of the payments.

“I want to emphasize that Russia will definitely continue to supply natural gas in line with the volumes and prices and pricing mechanisms set forth in the existing contracts,” Putin said. [So the price is still calculated in euros. This isn’t a true petro-ruble.]

For some buyers, the switch to rubles could be feasible.

“That’s no danger for the supply, we’ve checked, there’s a counterparty in Bulgaria that can realize the transaction in rubles,” state-owned distributor Bulgargaz EAD and a Gazprom client said. “We’re expecting all kinds of actions on the verge of the unusual but this scenario has been discussed, so there’s no risk for the payments under the existing contract.”

In the first 15 days of March, Gazprom exported an average of 500 million cubic meters per day to countries outside the former Soviet Union, including those in the EU, China and Turkey. Of the total, flows toward Europe averaged 384 million cubic meters per day, the producer’s data showed.

“I guess payment in rubles might be possible if a European bank can get cooperation with a Russian, non-sanctioned, bank but this could be awkward,” said Jonathan Stern, a research fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies.

The European Union reacted to Russia’s decision to transfer payment for gas supplies into rubles. According to TASS , German Vice Chancellor, Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Robert Habek believes that Russia’s decision to switch to rubles will be a violation of existing contracts for the supply of blue fuel.

“We will discuss with our European partners how to respond to this,” Habek said at a press conference in Berlin.

“This statement about payments in rubles is a violation of contracts,” he said. According to the German minister, Moscow’s position shows that Russia is allegedly not a “stable partner” in the matter of energy supplies.

At the same time, the publication reports, citing the head of the Bundestag committee on energy and climate protection, Klaus Ernst, that payment for the supplied Russian natural gas in rubles is technically possible, but this will force the EU to bypass its own sanctions and warm up discussions about the boycott of energy carriers from the Russian Federation.

The head of the industry association Zukunft Gas, Timm Köhler, said that the German gas industry was confused by this statement .

“We took the message that Russia wants the payment for gas supplies only in rubles with great confusion,” he said. “What specific implications this will have for the gas trade, we can’t predict at this time,” Koehler added.

The opinion that payment for Russian gas supplies in rubles is a way to circumvent sanctions was also expressed by economic adviser to the Italian Prime Minister Francesco Javazzi.

“My opinion is that you need to pay in euros, because paying in rubles would mean circumventing the sanctions, so I think we will continue to pay in euros,” the agency quoted him as saying. However, he clarified that the government has not made any decision.

OMV is going to pay for gas to Russia in accordance with the current contract in euros. This was announced on Wednesday by the head of the Austrian oil and gas company OMV Alfred Stern.

“I also saw a message in the media. No one has called us yet, and we have valid contracts, nothing of the kind was stipulated there. I will now wait if someone will contact us,” Stern said.

Asked if the company would continue to pay Russia in euros, Stern said: “Of course. We have no other contractual basis, I could not do otherwise.”

Losing 15% of body weight should be a primary treatment goal for most people with type 2 diabetes and could help lead to diabetes remission, according to two speakers.

Ildiko Lingvay, MD, MPH, MSCS, a professor of medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and Priya Sumithran, MBBS (Hons), FRACP, PhD, a senior research fellow in the department of medicine at the University of Melbourne in Australia, said health care professionals treating people with diabetes should be trained in obesity management to prepare for a future of diabetes treatment where weight loss is a major focus.

Lingvay is a professor of medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

“The treatment of obesity should be the future of diabetes treatment,” Lingvay said during a press conference at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes virtual meeting. “It is now our responsibility to work at making it the present of diabetes treatment.”

According to estimates included in a review article published in The Lancet, 40% to 70% of people with type 2 diabetes have obesity, and about 20% to 40% have cardiovascular disease. This leads to three subgroups of people with type 2 diabetes: adiposity-related diabetes, diabetes with CVD and isolated hyperglycemia. Lingvay said treatment should be tailored specifically toward those subtypes.

“We propose a gluco-centric approach for those with beta-cell dysfunction and isolated hyperglycemia, a cardio-centric approach in those with CVD, and a weight-centric approach in everybody else,” Lingvay said.

Weight loss of 15% as primary goal

In the review article, researchers detailed specific targets for each of the three diabetes subtypes. For isolated hypoglycemia, the primary target should be an HbA1c of less than 7%. For diabetes with CVD, treatment should center on the use of proven cardio-protective agents. For adiposity-related diabetes, adults should aim for 15% or more weight loss. Adiposity-related diabetes should center around weight-loss interventions and anti-obesity agents.

Researchers selected a 15% weight-loss goal due to evidence showing weight loss at that level can induce diabetes remission. For adults with type 2 diabetes participating in the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), each 1 kg of weight lost was associated with 32% greater odds for diabetes remission at 1 year (95% CI, 1.23-1.41; P < .0001). Of participants who lost 15 kg or more body weight, 86.1% had diabetes remission after 1 year.

A similar association was found in a study analyzing 5,928 adults with type 2 diabetes who underwent bariatric surgery. In the study, weight loss of 10% to 15% was associated with a greater likelihood for diabetes remission compared with those who lost 5% of weight or less (HR = 1.97; 95% CI, 1.47-2.64).

Sumithran noted losing 15% or more weight is challenging. Lifestyle change plus pharmacotherapy is typically associated with weight loss of 5% to 8%. Bariatric surgery, which is invasive and not scalable for a larger population, typically results in weight loss greater than 15%. This leaves a gap in obesity treatment, but Sumithran said, new and combination pharmacotherapy, such as semaglutide (Wegovy, Novo Nordisk) and tirzepatide (Eli Lilly) could fill the gap, can induce weight loss of 15%.

“Type 2 diabetes remission is achievable for many people, particularly if they can achieve weight loss of 10% or more, and particularly if they can sustain that weight loss,” Sumithran said. “New medications are demonstrating that these targets are increasingly achievable in large numbers of participants. This presents an opportunity for how we think about treating diabetes.”

Implementing an obesity-centered approach

With weight management and type 2 diabetes closely intwined, changes will be required in clinical care, according to Lingvay. Health care professionals who treat people with diabetes will need to be trained on obesity management if they are not already, and practices may need specialized staff to assist with weight-related elements of the new diabetes treatment strategy.

“Right now, a relatively small group of physicians or providers actually address obesity or know how to treat obesity,” Lingvay said. “That will have to change. Every provider that treats diabetes would need to know how to address obesity, how to treat obesity, what available options are there, how to implement them, the benefits, how to coach the patient. Then it takes that office environment to be successful.

“All of that has to change, and it’s not going to be a quick change, it’s going to take time to get there,” Lingvay said. “But I’m optimistic that if we spread the message and people understand the benefits of this approach and the greater benefit over just focusing on blood sugar, then this will come naturally.”

Im November 2012 beendete ein Aktivist mit einer aufwändigen Tunnel-verschanzung im Hambacher Forst die Stille um die seit 1972 betriebene Abholzung dieses ehemals gigantischen Waldgebietes im Städtedreieck, Köln, Düsseldorf und Aachen. Weit über die lokalen Grenzen hinaus wurde dadurch die Rodung der uralten Hambacher Wälder durch den Energiekonzern RWE bekannt. Heute stehen nur noch 10% dieses Waldes. AktivistInnen verschiedener Gruppen hatten es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, das Rheinische Braunkohlenrevier zu einem Kristallisationspunkt für den Kampf gegen Kohleverstromung zu machen. 5 Jahre später waren im Sommer und Herbst 2017 zusammen über 10000 Menschen an Protestaktionen rund um die Tagebaue beteiligt.

Susanne Fasbender blickt In BRAND III zurück auf erste Klimacamps im Rheinland, besuchte engagierte BürgerInnen gegen Gesundheitsschäden durch Braunkohleverstromung und erzählt die Geschichte der Waldbesetzung im Hambacher Forst bis zur Räumung im Jahr 2018. Sie hat in Kooperation mit dem Hambacher Forst Filmkollektiv über mehrere Jahre einige der vielen Ereignisse des Widerstandes begleitet, um diese individuellen Grenzüberschreitungen nicht nur zu dokumentieren, sondern ihnen einen Raum zu geben, in dem dahinter liegende Konzepte erklärt werden und persönliche Gedanken zu Wort kommen. AktivistInnen sprechen von Taktiken und Motivation, von ihren Erfahrungen damit, im Wald zu leben und sich gleichzeitig mit ihrem Kampf für eine lebenswerte Zukunft einer antiökologischen Aufstandsbekämpfung auszusetzen. In November 2012, an activist holed up in a complex tunnel system in the Hambach Forest, ending the silence about the deforestation of this once gigantic forest area between the cities of Cologne, Düsseldorf and Aachen. The energy company RWE has been felling this ancient forest since 1972, but the occupation has spread awareness of the clear-cutting far beyond the local boundaries. Today only 10% of this forest remains. Activists from different groups had taken on the task of making the Rheinische brown coal (lignite) area to a crystallisation point for the struggle against coal power generation. Five years later, between summer and autumn 2017, more than 10,000 people took part in protest actions around the mines.

In Brand III, Susanne Fasbender looks back at the first Climate Camps in the Rheinland, visits citizens taking action against the threat to good health caused by power generation from lignite, and tells the story of the forest occupation in the Hambach Forest until its eviction in 2018. In co-operation with the Hambach Forest Film Collective, she followed some of the many key events of the resistance, not only to document these individual transgressions, but also to give them a space where the underlying concepts are explained and where personal thoughts can be expressed. Activists speak about tactics and motivation, and about their experience of living in the forest and at the same time, through their struggle for a future worth living for, being exposed to anti-ecological repression mechanisms. "The eviction is not the end". That's how the movie ends.
