john kramer: ah yes i love all of my apprentices dearly. they’re almost like a family I never quite had! there’s my daughter amanda, my favorite, and larry, he’s quite accomplished and i also love… reads smugged writing on the back of his hand marker hofferboy, he’s a detective i think

it's kind of fucked up how being john's 'favourite' actively harmed amanda so much. he tests her 3 times, intended to test her 4 (she was supposed to be bloodboarded), leaves her scarred both mentally and physically. hoffman, on the other hand, only gets 'tested' by john twice*, and the first one didn't even have any risk of harm to him. to a normal person that may make it seem like hoffman were his favourite, but john is incredibly abnormal and his testing mandy is him trying to help her. they're all vying for john's favour and yet john's favour is what got amanda killed.
*the unloaded shotgun chair, and the reverse bear trap. I don't count the ice trap as he was never even under the impression he would get hurt, and him being put in the bathroom was less a trap from john and more lawrence getting rid of him in him own way.

Every Saw movie I watch is just another episode of the John Kramer Is A Hypocrite Show. "I've never murdered anyone, I always give them a choice" except for that guy you literally killed when he broke out of your first trap 🙄 "I despise murderers" except for that guy you caught using your serial killing legacy to kill a guy and then took on as your protégé who then fyi went on to go full Michael Myers AND kill your beloved (ex)wife AFTER you axed your other protégé Amanda for killing like 3 people #misogyny "It can never be personal" EXCEPT FOR LIKE THE DOZEN PEOPLE YOU KNEW PERSONALLY AND PUT INTO TRAPS BC THEY WRONGED YOU. NEED WE GO ON. "Everyone in my traps deserves to be there" bro you think addiction and straight up murder are the same I cannae take you seriously 🙄 if John Kramer was real I'd be making anti-Jigsaw posts ragging on him constantly and wake up in a trap and just go Oh so mister pig man can't take constructive criticism now? Gonna go build an edgy rube goldberg machine about it? Gonna go get another lackey because you and your little old man goatee can't do any heavy lifting? God you're emo. 🙄

Note
was kramer pro or anti union? could amanda have unionized if she wanted to?
john kramer is desperate to have all of his apprentices get along and focus on their jobs and stop trying to murder each other, so if they teamed up and asked for better pay i think he'd cry tears of joy

john kramer being ‘against murder’ while doing all that is frequently joked about but him claiming to be anti-revenge kind of funnier. the elaborate setup years after my death to kill hoffman when he inevitably murders my ex wife isnt a revenge plot it was just because murder is wrong and hoffmans a murderer. for some reason he needed to be inescapable-tested after this one specifically despite having already been a bona fide serial killer. sure man

With my other poll coming to an end in a day, I thought I’d make another because I may even implement these into a one of my character study type posts!
One thing I’ll state first is that there isn’t really a correct way to handle grief. The way people deal with it and show it can differ from person to person! However wording that for a poll is quite long winded…. I also want it to be a bit open so there is room for discussions.
Moving on- I think that Lynn may be the one to sweep this poll. But at some points I believe this is due to the fact that people will only be looking at these characters through the lens of what happened during their run in with Jigsaw.
Tumblr media
Which I don't think really is where people should hone in on, because it's imbalanced. Lynn does not have to come face to face with her grief within her test like Jeff does. We have no real basis to know how she'd handle that besides assumptions based off of her as a character. Other things to remember is the fact that Jeff actually WITNESSED Dylan get hit by the car. This isn’t to say his grief is more powerful than Lynn’s, but it is a factor to dwell on! Witnessing your own child’s death right in front of your eyes is a very heavy thing to deal with.
Tumblr media
Moving on! Here’s some snips off their Saw Wiki’s…. I'll get it out of the way that both neglect Corbett and one another.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As individuals? Jeff has depression and an obsession with vengeance in regards to those involved and linked to his son's death. We see him drunk and threatening himself with a gun, picturing his reflection to be Timothy Young- But we also get to see how he let's this grief impact his daughter and the disregard for Corbett's own feelings.... At the end of the day she did lose a sibling, yet Jeff's focus is on a plush pig being missing from Dylan's room. On to Lynn. She also has depression and is constantly taking anti-depressants to try and stabilise herself. Lynn is having an affair with a man named Chris and her job performance is slipping, which in her line of work can mean life or death for a patient. We never get to see her interact with Corbett.
Anyway, I’ll stop the rambling here… Below are some of my previous little Denlon studies.

He stuck a bunch of poles through her body and forced her to take the life of another person while inflicting incredible pain on herself…
“This trap doesn’t make sense because jigsaw is punishing this woman for being a victim of domestic abuse” well yes you are supposed to think. Hm. Maybe jigsaw is stupid and wrong and a bad person with a twisted definition of punishment and retribution!

for the bitches (affectionate) who wanna put leon in a saw trap
-> john kramer is unfair as fuck and tries to convince himself he is doing good. whoever in-universe is tormenting leon, that should be considered
-> leon himself is a slave to the government right? it's not like he could easily go rogue and free himself. that's the theme. "breaking your chains" kinda shit. definitely acab/anti-capitalist/imperialist themes to interject here lol. but maybe the idea is to convince him to go rogue... or join whomever the baddie(s) are.
-> detective rigg was put in a trap because he was too focused on saving people. and i guess his tendency to breach doors w/o it being cleared. we know leon is willing to risk his life at a moment's notice to save someone, so that's definitely an idea lol. gets seriously injured trying to help someone... recovers... relives the horrors and is punished for it.
-> and to that point, leon's so willing to sacrifice himself. again, kramer is not fair and doesn't hold to his philosophy. he kills innocents all the time. you can absolutely include someone totally innocent in leon's trap.
use poetry to be cruel, is what i'm getting at. predict human behavior. or something. go with the intended philosophy and make them bitches hypocrites lol
currently brewing up an idea with a HEAVILY misguided group who convince themselves they're "the good guys" and absolutely do 0 good things. (like john going after corruption and greed) -> leads to "testing" leon to see if he's good enough for their cause. or, trying to convince him to join them with brutality. or even, they refuse to take a "no" from him and keep on with it.

Leigh Whannell writes about victims
The focus of Leigh Whannell's films tends not to be the monster or the murderer. Look at Insidious or any of his more recent standalone films, and this is obvious. So it's interesting to ponder the Saw franchise which has infamously focused on Jigsaw as a character more and more over the years, to the point where he is unambiguously the protagonist and anti-hero of the most recent film, Saw X. Of course, Leigh Whannell didn't write Saw X or any of the Saw films since Saw III, but even within that original trilogy, Jigsaw is a very developed character, arguably moreso than any other character in all three films except Amanda, who is also a villain... right?
Obviously Amanda is a monster who has robbed the earth of countless years of human life (or whatever) but is that "who she is" in Saw II and Saw III, the movies where she is a main character? I think not. Especially in Saw III, Amanda is presented as a Jigsaw victim. Not just someone who suffered the indignity of the reverse bear trap, but someone who John Kramer, the Jigsaw killer, used and discarded when he deemed her no longer useful. It was not a good turn for Amanda's life, to become the disciple of a mass murderer.
In a very real way, Amanda is the one who suffered the most out of anybody in the first three Saw films. Remember, it's 2006. Dr. Gordon is presumed dead. Jigsaw says "I was his patient, and he was mine," implying that this relationship is in the past tense. There was nothing left Dr. Gordon could do for John, and there was nothing left John could do for Dr. Gordon. Dr. Gordon bled to death believing his family murdered. Adam starved for days before being suffocated and having his face split open. And still Amanda suffered more. Because she didn't only bleed from the body, in the reverse bear trap and the nerve gas house trap (though, of course, she did). Amanda also bled from her soul. She was made to believe she was broken, and it was only through the love of her greatest abuser, John Kramer, that she could be fixed. And as Amanda learns that John has not truly fixed her, she too learns that John has not given her true love at all. Her spirit is crushed (as is her circulatory system).
And let's remember the real main character in Saw III. It's not Jeff. It's not Lynn. It's not Jigsaw, either. The main character in Saw III is Amanda. She is the one who goes through a narrative arc in the film. It just happens to resolve in tragedy. And that's why we love Saw, isn't it? The tragedy of it all?
Of course, it makes sense that later writers and directors and even fans could latch onto the character of Jigsaw. After all, Amanda's character only works in Saw III because Darren Lynn Bousman and the fans loved Jigsaw in the first Saw film and wanted to learn more about him in Saw II. It is only natural that Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan would similarly be interested in John's character arc past Saw II, and so want to dig into John's past, and learn more about why John does the things he does. That's how we get to Saw X, where Jigsaw is the main character, and he is the one most challenged by the narrative. But in the tribe of Amandas, the best part of the franchise will forever be Saw III, because even another movie all about Amanda would still pale in comparison to the movie that made us love her and then lose her in 2006. Written by Leigh Whannell, story by James Wan and Leigh Whannell.
