Hi! I don't want to seem rude at all!! I promise I'm not here to hate, I just want to get a grasp on how you see the batfamily?? Is it pure pseudocest? Are there some you think are best platonic? Is there a certain comic/movie/show that made you realise the batfam is better as a non-platonic thing??

I personally don't get it due to Bruce (sort of) raising them from a decently young age but I'm interested in learning and hearing about it from your perspective if you're willing to give it!

If not, that's fine, I don't want this to seem rude or a hate remark.

If you want a well-crafted and seriously thought out answer about the history, dynamics and reasons to ship these fictional characters, I'd definitely go to blogs like @inkrats and/or @vintagerobin for that.

What I can add though is another question; Why does the majority of people, including the official writers, think Barbara and Dick are sooo stinking cute together even though that's basically "pseudocest" too?

I mean the modern canon is that Barbara and Dick essentially grew up together. Bruce helped raise them both, considering the amount of time Barbara spent with him. She is a part of the Batfamily. So they are "pseudo siblings" just like Jason and Dick for example. How can antis be like "yeah but it's fine. Oh it's even canon in some stories? yeah that's fine. Yeah no no it's not weird. Also KYS if you ship other batfamily members."

Even if we go by the original canon, Barbara was 7 years older than Dick then if I'm not mistaken. And according to posts I've seen, many antis think anything over a 5 year age difference is pedophilia sooooo. Do you see how stupid this all is?

Hell in the animated version of The Killing Joke, Bruce canonically FUCKED Barbara for no reason other than to just have them do it. And yeah most people didn't really vibe with it but it got MADE dude. It got approved, animated, edited and released without any pushback from the workers/writers involved.  

Like the only real difference I can see is that those ships are straight.

Bottom line is, did anyone get hurt in 2013 when everybody and their mother on this damn site was shipping Levi (30-33) and Eren (15) from AOT? No? That's what I thought. And don't even try denying how big that fucking ship was at that time.

Antis are usually young, passionate kids who mean well but they seriously need to learn how fantasy and reality works. And if they can't? You filter your online experience and take care of yourself.

I personally hate kids for example. I do NOT want to see posts about babies, diapers and pregnant bellies when I'm online. Do I send hate to parents or pregnant people? Demand they stop posting? Of course not. I block, I filter tags, scroll past and move on with my life.

why I like jaytim besides you know for the fun angsty drama? Besides the fact they're both different brands of nerds? That they both have a dark side/trauma over the joker that they can bond over? They both desperately long for affection and just to be important to someone. To an unhinged degree. But it fits you know. They balance each other out.

YESSSS I don't know much about Tim's canonical family but I'm under the impression that he felt like he was never good enough in their eyes and when they died, it was like this door was left open; that and the fact that he went out of his way to photograph Bruce and Dick, then Jason, just to prove himself to someone (nevermind that that someone is The Batman, Gotham's most notorious vigilante with approx. 9 targets on his back and his Robins' backs at a time) is Peak Affection-Starved protag behaviour.

And then of course you've got Jason I'm-the-walking-traumatic-backstory Todd, who deflects any mention of his psychological trauma with humor, who trains under the worst people in the DCverse just to make SURE that no one can catch him off guard again, who busts back into Bruce's life because he needs to prove to himself that Bruce isn't what he needed; that Bruce is weak, but it backfires because Bruce is what he needed-- a team is what he needed, and it's what he had, and the only thing between him and that now is himself.

Put those two in the same room and tell me they wouldn't have the most interesting, devastating conversations in the DCU.

somehow he's never wrong and everyone and their moms have to apologize to him for everything. do people seriously think he has no backbone! batfam fandom has this thing about making jason a straight up monster compared to baby tim. i don't care about villainizing other characters for fic whump but my main issue is tim fans acting like tim isn't a literal crime fighting vigilante (just like the other bats...) they genuinely treat him like he's gonna blow away in the wind or have a panic attack if someone is mean to him. i highly doubt the guy who fights supervillains on the daily has ptsd from jason fighting him and/or needs an apology from jason.

the way i wouldn't even have this strong of an opinion on this guy if it weren't for the fact that jason fans are forced to engage with his character because he's in most fanon jason-centric content. LOLL i ended up ranting but yes that ship also does not do it for me at all purely because it's used as a way to make jason grovel at tim's feet and apologize for 'trying to kill him'. One of my favourite convoluted love triangle headcanons is Tim likes Jay who likes Dick who has had an unrequited crush on Bruce for years who just thinks of his boys as...his boys. Dami also has a crush on Dick AND Tim but will never admit it.

I like to think Tim confessed to Jay and Jay was like "fuck off" but started looking at him differently. Perhaps they meet up for a makeout session every now and then but Jay's feelings are with Dick who he refuses to confess to.

"I will bury this feeling under multiple layers of snark and disdain until I die-for reals this time."

Dick knew lil Jay had a crush on him but didn't think post-lazarus pit Jay still held the same feelings so just treats him as a brother. He's still pining for his father/mentor after all. Dick was so obvious with his feelings as a kid but Bruce never picked up on it and eventually Dick gave up, burying his feelings in redheads and work. Part of his leaving Bruce so dramatically was realising his crush would never come to fruition.

Damian's crush on Dick developed after Bruce's death and Dick took such good care of him. He slipped it into conversation a few times but Dick didn't take it seriously, thinking he was just confusing familial love with romantic love. His crush on Tim on the other hand is something he refuses to admit but most of his bro's have caught onto it. Even Tim knows but refuses to acknowledge it, weirded out by it enough. He's grateful when Jon comes into the picture and takes Dami's attention away from him.

Now Bruce may be the greatest detective but he is shit when it comes to romance and even more so when it involves his boys. Selina knows pretty much all of it but doesn't want to out the boys before they're ready-and besides who wanted to break the news to such a love-adverse, awkward man like Bruce?

I didn't mention Duke in the intro but that's because he's not part of the triangle (hexagon?) and altho he knows a lot of who is crushing on who there is absolutely no form of torture that could get him to talk about it.

Steph and Cass are the only ones who have it together because they've been dating for a while and are pretty open about it. Even Bruce knows and acknowledges them. He will protect his girls if anyone says anything homophobic to them and u can quote me on that.

I’m coming back to the DC fandom after a break for a few years and it’s genuinely a baffling experience of like when the fuck did we start calling things batcest??? I don’t remember that ever being a term?? When did my popular basic staple ships that were everywhere (BruDick, JayDick, JayTim, etc) become like controversial?? When did this become a nuclear family??

I feel like I’m going a little crazy watching this wackass uptick in purity culture that feels especially palatable to me in the Batman/DC fandom. Like I was gone off to dabble in other fandoms and I came back and Tim Drake was canonically bi but everything else was on fire with a guy stabbed in the leg. Like people are banning me from my own house kind of situation.

Not only they turned the bats and birds into a nuclear family and started harassing everyone who ships them, but they're also actively trying to do revisionism of fandom history by saying that the ships you mentioned have always been "controversial", and that it was a fringe community that used to ship them rather than the majority of people. Which couldn't be more false of course, but these people do not care about what's actually true or not and will keep coming up with more or less prettily worded bullshit to further their moral purity agenda.

We ARE talking about very basic ships which indeed were the foundation of the fandom (especially Brudick and Jaytim), and now shipping them earns you the "freak" badge, and the moment one of your ship posts goes above the 100 notes you're at risk of receiving mild to heavy harassment in the form of insults to suicide baiting to threats of doxxing. If it happens on Discord you might as well delete your account and start anew. This isn't in any way discouraged by tumblr itself - more and more anti harassment, "free shipping" blogs get termed while the censorship lovers thrive nearly as much as on twitter.

"Zero what are you saying twitter is way worse" Twitter is undeniably worse because its very format encourages misunderstanding and vitriol, but we can still post whatever we want on twitter. Whereas on tumblr showing one nipple is considered VM18, and if you even just mention your own history of childhood abuse you can get termed without previous warning, because a website in which CSA is even just brushed on is not safe enough for advertisers. I'm saying this because this culture of extreme censorship encourages anti-ship mentality and also encourages young queer people to police themselves, convinced that being perfectly pristine and sanitized is somehow the morally correct thing to do.
