How do you think the High School Musical series/Troyella's relationship would have gone if Ms Darbus had not given Troy and Gabriella a callback?

... Good god, Anon, it has been over ten years since I watched that movie and I didn't like it at the time.

It always struck me as sanitized, knock-off, toned-down Grease.

But alright, we'll go off what I very vaguely remember.

I think ultimately the relationship wouldn't have taken off.

The thing about the musical was it brought a whole bunch of shit to the surface for both of them where they both immediately had to take a stand against their friends and what were supposed to be their main interests.

Had it not been for the musical, then Troy would have continued basketball and could have kept his singing thing on the sly, Gabriella could hang out with Troy every once in a while but would quickly be warned away against seeing him too often in public because of the status quo and "Wouldn't want to ruin your social life gurl" and Sharpay and her brother can have their... very weird dynamic and get the musical for themselves.

They'd likely remain friends but it'd be harder and harder to hang out as they have to do so pretty much on the sly as neither is invited to the other's friend group.

Nothing would ultimately push them together the way the musical would have.

Not sure of you still talk about hsm, but I was reading your work about how toxic gabriella was to troy and I just instantly love it, I got a question okay I rewatching night to remember.  I apologize if this disappoints anyone, but I have chosen to leave the High School Musical fandom, as of 2018. I was too emotionally invested in a deeply unhealthy way, and had too many negative encounters and unpleasant experiences with certain facets of the fandom. Continuing to dwell in any space that engulfs you in negative feelings on a regular basis will only bring you harm in the long run. 

 I had to learn that the hard way when something that was once an escape for me became a source of unyielding anxiety. 

 I advise anyone who may likewise be struggling to leave behind something that once made you happy and now causes you undue stress and pain to do the same. It will be tough, but I promise you that it is worth it and you will feel so much better turning the page to a new chapter. 

 With all of that said, I am glad that someone is still able to take something valuable from my Anti-Troy/Gabriella posts. I wasn’t in the best headspace when I typed up many of them, and there are definitely some that I regret. But, I do feel that they are informative enough to keep online. And, that is thanks to kind people like you, who take the time to let me know that my silly and often heated rants are doing even the teeniest-tiniest, most microscopic bit of good.  ( ´͈ ◡ `͈ )

 Now, to answer your question... 

 Gabriella is meant to be the pillar of virtue in these films. She’s the crusader against all wrongs who stands up to Sharpay and puts her in her place. She helps Ryan receive recognition for his talents and make his own friends, and “inspires” Troy to follow his heart. She espouses the messages of promise being a “really big word”, and “if you act like someone you’re not, pretty soon that’s who you become”, and (we’re supposed to believe) single-handedly changed everyone at East High for the better. 

 In artistic and cinematic language, such figures of “virtuosity” are frequently depicted in articles of white clothing, often with something resembling a halo adorning their heads. 

 This is a form of visual shorthand that signals to the readers, viewers, et cetera, that the person wearing white is pure, chaste, and made of all things good, right, and wholesome. 

Yours and my assessments of her character, aside, I have no doubt that this is exactly what these costume choices were intended to signal to the viewers of HSM3, which is, not-so-coincidentally, the film most intent on elevating Gabriella to something approximating sainthood.

High school musical fills me with rage

I can't believe that disney allowed this movie to exist and have it NOT be about Sharpay the theatre kid who cared about her craft but about Troy and Gabriella who gave 0 shits about the play makes my blood boil. Not only that but they glorify the borderline abusive relationship between Troy and Gabriella makes my head explode. Even more infuriating is the fact that the "villain" of the story is the only character with redeeming qualities like how did this trainwreck get 3 movies

I’m so sick of Sharpay Evans Stans shitting on Gabriella and Troy. You all do realize that just because Sharpay worked hard for her roles doesn’t mean she’s entitled to anything, right? Sharpay did a flawless audition, but the fact is that she wasn’t the right fit. Gabriella got the role because she was a better fit for it. Also, Gabriella did work hard for her role, so don’t you dare say that she got the role through carelessness. While Gabriella did have colliding interests, that doesn’t mean anything because she was just as dedicated to the Decathlon as she was to the musical.

you know what’s weird? in hsm2, Gabriella is mad at Troy for prioritising his future. in hsm3, Gabriella leaves the fucking state for her future and then gets mad at Troy for being upset,,.

Oh, it’s not just weird. It’s one of the most outstanding examples of the utterly appalling double-standards held by both Gabriella and the Wildcats, and the narrative, as well as the stunning hypocrisy demonstrated by both of the previously mentioned parties. 

If Troy does Thing A, it’s bad, and wrong, and Troy is a “jerk with new shoes” and a “new Troy”, who “bails” on and “blows off” his friends and intentionally misses dates. 

If Gabriella does Thing A, it’s “the right thing to do”, and absolutely no one vilifies her, or calls her out on it. Instead, they simply sulk around, missing her, demoralized in her absence. And, naturally, it’s totally okay for Gabriella to not bother telling Troy about her acceptance into the Stanford Freshman Honors Program, then string Troy along for two weeks with promises of flying back to Albuquerque to attend the prom with him and “all of [Gabriella’s] friends”, only to bail and dump Troy over the phone just two days prior. Not because Gabriella was distracted or caught up in other things, like Troy was when he missed the staff softball game and burgers in the kitchen at Lava Springs, but because Gabriella couldn’t “be a little adult”.

So I started watching hsm2 again, and the part where Troy and Gabriella are talking on the golf course really annoys me now cause Troy's trying to explain why he is willing to work with sucky manager, and Gabriella just brushes off his concerns with a comment "oh you'll get a scholarship" forgetting how different sport vs academic ones are. Troy does try to explain it but again Gabriella just brushes him off. Like aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

It’s incredibly frustrating. I once saw a tag on a fanfiction over on Archive Of Our Own, offering forth the claim that “Troy and Gabriella have such a healthy relationship because they know how to communicate”, and I was floored.

I’d like to know what version of these films that author watched. In every movie, it’s as though Troy’s concerns, doubts, and insecurities go in one of Gabriella’s ears and right out the other. 

Troy tells her he just wants to be “a guy”. She laments him not being her “fairy tale”. 

Troy voices his concerns about his fast-approaching future and doubts that he can get a scholarship on his own merits. Gabriella brushes these concerns aside and expects Troy to turn down an opportunity for a scholarship, purely because she feels that he’s neglecting her and betraying her trust by fulfilling a promise that he was essentially blackmailed by his employers into making. 

Troy confides in Gabriella that he may not want to go to U of A, next year, as he’s had offers from other schools and is “really listening”. Gabriella outright refuses to tell Troy about her acceptance into Stanford’s Freshman Honors Program, decides that she maybe she’ll go to U of A, next year, and is annoyed with Troy when he asks her why she kept her acceptance a secret from him. 

It’s as though the two of them operate on entirely different strata. Their priorities and objectives never align once they become a couple, and when Troy attempts to open the door for healthy communication, Gabriella seems to shut it in his face. 

It’s utterly unbelievable that we’re supposed to buy these two as “meant to be”, with a “one in a million” relationship that’s like “catching lightning” in a bottle. 

You have my deepest condolences for attempting to trudge through that infernal mess, Anon.

i was listening to "I gotta go my own way" after reading a bunch of your analysis about Gabriella and I noticed something that might interest you. In the song, Gabriella keeps on insisting that Troy will be okay. But she clearly knows how emotionally dependent Troy is on her, because she used that to manipulate him with regards to the U of A basketball team. So I think she was trying to convince herself he'd be okay, knowing he wouldn't, so that she could justify quitting her job n dumping him.

That’s absolutely what it is, with a nice side of Gabriella needing to paint Troy as a selfish, inconsiderate, thoughtless jerk and clueless buffoon who can never feel pain or be affected by any blow to his “ego”, and herself as a perpetual victim of circumstance and Troy’s own “selfish” actions. 

In “When There Was Me And You”, she claims, “It’s like you [Troy] were floating, while I was falling”, and as you stated, she repeatedly asserts that Troy will “be okay”, in “Gotta Go My Own Way”, as if her departure won’t be any real loss for him despite her intentionally severing ties with him and even returning the symbol of the promise Troy made to stay with her all summer- the T-pendant necklace- as a means of punishing Troy for having the brazen audacity to focus on himself, for once. 

Call it projection, gaslighting, what have you, but it’s definitely emotional manipulation and just another reason why she’s a terrible girlfriend who shouldn’t have had any influence in Troy’s life.

Do you think that Gabriella will ever stop being an abuser?

I do think she has the potential to grow out of her self-entitled, self-righteous, self-absorbed, manipulative personality and behavior. She is a teenager, after all, and a lot of these less than appealing aspects of her personality are part and parcel of being a bratty pre-adult who believes the entire world should or does revolve around them and their whims. 

However, in order for this growth and maturation to occur, it’s absolutely vital that Gabriella is surrounded by people who won’t hesitate to call her out on her hypocrisy, selfishness, self-righteous attitude, and manipulation and mistreatment of others. Meaning dating Troy and growing alongside of him is entirely out of the question if the end goal is for Gabriella to realize the error of her ways and ultimately become a better person. Troy, as I’ve previously addressed, is completely blind to Gabriella’s faults, and incapable of truly questioning or standing up to her. Staying together would only lead to misery and unhappiness for both of them, as Troy always falls just short of Gabriella’s unrealistically high standards, and Gabriella has no real interest in Troy beyond what he can provide for her and won’t hesitate to eviscerate his self-esteem when he fails to please her. Thus, they cannot act as conduits or catalysts for one another’s growth as people, regardless of what their duets would like us to believe. 

Taylor, as well, is as much an enabler for Gabriella as she is a loyal and supportive friend. I think, for Gabriella to truly change, Taylor either has to be made aware of her friend’s atrocious behavior and attempt to push her toward rehabilitation, or take a backseat while a much more authoritative figure steps in to school Gabriella when needed. 

Most importantly, Gabriella, herself, must reach a point where she is able to look back on her behavior at East High; the way she treated Troy, Ryan, and even Taylor, Kelsi, and Sharpay, to a lesser extent, and feel ashamed or appalled. She, herself, must arrive at the epiphany that there’s something fundamentally wrong with her treatment of others, rather than carrying on believing that she is the perpetual victim and forever guiltless of any wrongdoings, and take it upon herself to try to rectify this. It’s been said, before, that a person cannot receive help or treatment unless they’re first willing to acknowledge that there is, indeed, a problem, and decide to fix it. This is the absolute truth. If Gabriella can’t accept that she messed up, nothing anyone says or does to try to change her for the better will ever have any effect.

Personally, I don’t think that Gabriella would ever abuse Troy physically. Hard as it is to believe, she has limits. Besides, she weaponizes her words against him, which appears equally effective. Words can definitely hurt, and she shows no compunction in using them to hurt, insult and belittle him. And that scene in HSM I shows her aggression– bear in mind that she was about to blow a fuse not long after they met!

I’m not sure whether or not I agree with this. 

On the one hand, Gabriella has a massive victim/martyr complex, and actually striking out at Troy with her hands or fists would detract from the image of her being a selfless, forever innocent of wrongdoing, sanctimonious little saint who is so above it all and knows better than everyone around her. 

On the other hand, she was quick to invade Sharpay’s personal space,

 jab her finger at Sharpay’s chest, 

fling her arms out in exasperation, 

and, as we’ve both addressed previously, give Troy a decisively angry nudge when she was unable to take a joke about his romantic history prior to her. 

If frustrated enough, I could see her potentially lashing out with more than words, then, fleeing the scene, horrified that someone reduced her to using violence against them. 

But, that’s just me.
