thinking about how eddie's parents just. will not know how to handle this eddie. this confident and self-assured dad who knows he was born to be a dad and will die trying. this eddie that has buck at his back encouraging him deeper into that confidence with every passing day. and eddie's parents just do not know this version of his son. because the last time they'd tried to take chris eddie was working three jobs and suffering from ptsd and shannon had just left. and now eddie is working multiple odd jobs again but on his own terms, he's been through multiple rounds of therapy and he has a partner who has his back even from 800 miles away. and they just don't know how to handle this eddie at all.

eddie diaz is truly a better person than i could ever be, because if my parents parentified me when i was a child and i was expected to step up and be the "man of the house" at age 10 or whatever that bs was, and then when i had my ACTUAL child whom i am ACTUALLY responsible for and am raising (something that i WANT to do and LOVE doing because hey, i LOVE my kid), and my parents where then like "you have no idea what you're doing. we should raise your kid. how could you think that you could ever do this" el paso simply would no longer exist. it would be burned off the map from the rage of it all. it would be fucking nuclear. if season 8b isn't just eddie eviscerating his parents for 10 episodes straight, then what's the point of it all? just to suffer??

⛈️ angsty spiralling Eddie / addict Buck au

aka Eddie loses Chris in a custody battle with his parents and they take him back to Texas, so he spirals into street fights and meets a very down on his luck Buck. Have some Eddie yelling at his mother because we could all use some of that.

"There's no reason I can't have my son and Buck! Who I..." Eddie's voice hitched in his throat at the words that threatened to spill out in his agitated state. "You don't get to have a say over who I have in my life, who I care about."

"Do you think that's the kind of environment, the kind of upbringing that's best for your son?" she said, and with her scolding tone, something in him snapped.

"Well what about yours?!"

Eddie has tears in his eyes, and both his parents fell silent with a momentary regretful expression.

"I am your son, and all you did when my wife left, when she died, was tell me that I wasn't capable of taking care of my son. Instead of helping me you just took him! I disagreed with your parenting methods and you just used any power you had to undermine me, to just... blindside me with a court case, because you knew I'd never just give up on him."

His mother opened her mouth and gaped a moment before taking in a breath as though there was anything she could say to defend herself. Eddie didn't give her the chance.

"And why shouldn't I disagree?" he said incredulously. "Look at me! I am your son, and you don't give a shit about helping me. You can't even parent your own son, what makes you think you'll do a better job with mine?"

they actually gave us so much with so little im going to have to rewatch all the eddie scenes over again to fully dissect it. the manipulation and guilt-tripping, the mind-bogglingly hypocritical classism towards his new job... godddd. the fact that chris doesnt even go inside to get his stuff speaks VOLUMES because if he set foot in that house she would have made him feel like SHIT for wanting to leave to live with his LITERAL DAD.

and the fact that it finally sunk in for eddie that for all of his mistakes he's a good father and he was right to take chris away from there in the first place. because at the very least he won't do to chris what they did to him his whole life, and that they've just shown they'll do to chris if he stays with them!

By the way, I hope all the “Ramón isn’t so bad, it’s mostly Helena” stuff stops after this episode. It’s a solid reminder that just because Helena is usually the one saying shit doesn’t mean Ramón isn’t a fucking enabler getting exactly what he wants from it.

Honestly, this is the best way the episode could’ve ended. With Chris saying he never liked his grandparents controlling him and that he wanted Eddie around the whole time.

no but. eddie having to be the man of the house. looking after sophia and adriana. looking out for his mom too. and the one thing he had. the one thing that was his. where he could have fun and be a kid for a little while. was ballroom dancing. and then they took that from him too and made it about achieving. because what's the point of just doing something for fun. grow up eddie.

thinking about Eddie having to choose between the family that actually supported and accepted him, and the family that forced him to grow up too soon, and criticizes him and punishes him every chance they get.

Having to choose between staying with the family he chose, but losing Christopher, or going back to the family he escaped to get Christopher back.

how ultimately Chris is always the single most important thing to him, and he's always going to choose him.

And even though Christopher is the most important person, the environment he has to be in to be with him isn't one Eddie can thrive in, unlike LA where he has Carla and Tia Pepa and a job that he loves with, as he called it, the family he chose ... and, of course, Buck. But he can't have that anymore, he has to give it up, and it's tearing him apart ... even if he doesn't show it.

He can't show it, he's never been in an environment that's safe to express his feelings outwardly. So while it looks like Buck is much more effected by Eddie leaving, he's not.

Eddie just internalizes it all, he has to keep it to himself. And he compartmentalizes it so well that he can make comments like "i have no ties in LA, everything that matters is in Texas." because all the good parts of his life in LA have to be locked away so far in his mind that he can't reach them, otherwise he wouldn't be able to let them go.

And maybe he says it hoping it'll be true. Using such absolute words to convince himself it's the case to make his choice easier.

Because he doesn't want to leave, he doesn't want to go back to the place where he's criticized and ridiculed and judged by his parents. He wants to stay with the 118, with his team, his family, the place he chose. But Christopher has to come first.
