"Maiko isn't canon anymore! Mai isn't Izumi's mother!"
Bryke, the heads of Nickelodeon and Paramount, and whoever the fuck is writing the comics nowadays could all come out tomorrow and say those exact words while introducing their new Izumi-producing OC and I'd still be like "It sure is nice that Mai and Zuko are happily married and doing a great job governing the Fire Nation while raising their kids together."

How has no one addressed Zuko's unacceptable behavior at this page of The Search?
Tumblr media
So, basically, Azula was getting a bit paranoid and accused the Gaang of working with her mother to take her down. That's not an illogical assumption for Azula to make considering that Ursa "showed up" after years of missing and Azula immediately loses in an extremely important fight. That, plus the fact that Azula has severe trust issues and is mentally ill would clearly lead to the assumption that Ursa worked together with the Gaang (at least from Azula's pov)
Now, what does Zuko do when it becomes ridiculously obvious that his sister, who's mentally ill, is having a bit of a slip up? He puts his fist besides her face and starts fire bending (you can see the smoke!)
He sees his sister going through a hard time and actively threatens to burn her face if she doesn't shut up and ignore her own issues!
AND ALL THE GAANG DOES IS BITCH THAT THEIR SOURCE OF ENTRAINMENT IS ZUKO ABUSING HIS SISTER INSTEAD OF FOOLING AROUND WITH TOPH!!
LIKE, WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!

The comics hint a possible redemption for azula.
Yeah, and I bet I know exactly how well written that arc would be😂

Nah fr I SCREAMMEEEDDDD at how dirty she was done in LOK
I am like, nothing short of absolutely disgusted at Bryke's portrayal of Katara in the comics and TLOK???
And apparently a majority of the audience is okay with this portrayal??
Just a recap:
This is Katara
Tumblr media
A girl with severe abandonment issues because her mom was murdered by a Fire Nation soldier and soon after her dad left to fight in the war, leaving her alone to take care of her brother and the village.
This is Aang
Tumblr media
A boy with chronic running away issues. This fault of his has led to a war extending up to 100 years causing death and destruction all around the world.
Katara does not acknowledge this fault of his because she idolises him as the Avatar but still his actions hurt her. A lot.
Tumblr media
Katara: It's not brave, it's selfish and stupid! We could be helping him and I know the world needs him, but doesn't he know how much we need him, too? How can he just leave us behind?
Logically speaking, a person with abandonment issues should never be with a person who has a tendency to run away from their issues. But Aang and Katara get together anyway.
But then the comics happen.
Literally anyone who cared about Katara as a character of her own (and not just as Aang's love interest) was infuriated at how she was portrayed. She was stripped of all her autonomy and characterization and was made into "The Avatar's Girlfriend". Nothing of her own.
Some people actually call this relationship sweet. Yuck.
But the thing is, it has panels like this:
Tumblr media
Katara, the girl with abandonment issues looks— that's right, abandoned and forgotten.
Even if the "abandonment issues" angle is thrown out of the window, the above panel from Katara's pov is a very unhealthy and shitty experience. (I can vouch with personal experience)
When you clearly don't have anyone else and the one person who you completely dedicate yourself to is completely avoiding you in favour of other people who don't really matter that much just because it makes them feel better/superior, how lonely and abandoned does that make you feel?
Also this sort of behaviour is undeniably selfish and self centred.
This problem of "Aang paying more attention to fangirls" exists in the show as well but atleast Aang corrects his behaviour or accepts that it was incorrect. The comics however:
Tumblr media
Katara, who was abandoned, ignored and lonely in this entire comic is reasonably upset about this. But instead of the comic validating her feelings, it makes her feel guilty???
What the fuck??
If this isn't a fulfilment of the male fetish of gfs/wives putting their own mental issues and feelings on a back bench just for the sake of the man's hApPineSs, then what is this?
Not to mention this fetish is pretty disgusting.
This is what young kids are supposed to learn form the comics?
This is harmful for boys AND girls.
But sure couple goals and soulmates or whatever.
Moving on,
The very existence of LOK!Katara is just—
Like what—?
This definitely isn't the Katara I know and love.
Katara, who was completely devastated by her mother's death but got her shit together immediately and seamlessly slipped into the role of her mother and was so damn good at it that her elder brother could conveniently use his coping mechanism to supress their mother's memories with Katara's instead.
You're telling me this same girl grew up to be a sad old lonely widow who spent her days and nights wallowing in the grief of the death of her husband—
Bullshit.
That's straight up romanticization of "life is nothing without you" trope where the wife just becomes a non-functional person after the death of her husband. That, and Bryke not giving a shit about Katara's character.
There's the evident drama of Aang ignoring his two other kids in favour of the Airbending one; leaving Katara with the other two kids. Just like how she was left alone in charge of things as a child.
And then there's this:
Tumblr media
They actually take the time to show us that Katara is sad and lonely and abandoned??
What family does she have left at the South pole? None.
And yet, people manage to think Katara is perfectly fine and happy.
Katara, a person with severe abandonment issues spends her entire life being abandoned??
What the fuck Bryke?
Like, it's pretty clear that they didn't give two shits about Katara as a character; she was just supposed to be a pretty arm candy for the Hero™ with some handy dandy waterbending abilities.
But if other people have done a spectacular job of turning this cardboard character into a fully fleshed out, multi dimensional character, why would you throw it away??
Like, that's just dumb.
Why would they take an infinite number of steps back to turn Katara back into a cardboard character and fulfil romanticized misogynistic tropes?
Much wow, many thanks.

Gene Yang’s Ableist Depiction Badly Distorted Fandom Perception of Azula
I decided to do a statistically analysis of how fanfics on AO3 written between the end of the show and the publishment of the third volume of the “The Promise”(which introduced Gene Yang’s depiction of Azula) depicted Azula in the postwar period. I found 60 such fanfics(with a few excluded for being smut, being Zucest centered, or some other reason). Of these, only 11 out of 60 depicted Azula as seriously delusional and/or significantly hallucinating; none showed her as being driven to actively harm people specifically because of her hallucinations. Only 11 out of 60(but not necessarily the same 11) depicted her as being regularly or always being restrained; none depicted her as being restrained in a straightjacket specifically. 42 out of 60(and these 42 do not necessarily depict good fates for her, although many did) did not depict Azula as either being continuously restrained or being actively delusional.
I don’t have a control group, but I am almost certain that “Azula is continuously hallucinating,” “Azula attacks people because she’s hallucinating,” “Azula is kept restrained often or always,” and “Azula is kept in a straightjacket specifically” gained a tremendous degree of ground in fan depictions of her after “The Promise Part III” and “The Search.” Fortunately, the Avatar fandom seems to be increasingly reject the comics as canon, but unfortunately, many of the specific deeply ableist depictions of her that Yang inspired remain.

Sadly, Di Martino haven't a family, he never lived or knew a dysfunctional family (the First is a good thing), but clearly he and Konietzko didn't know how a family can be destroyed. But if they had known It, they would have comtinued as they didn't in the comics, cause clearly they hated the Old Lore (especially Di Martino, the principa storyteller), and a more logical and dysfunctional family It could "destroy the tragedy of Azula and Zuko and change them", and for them they are Perfect as their stereotypical Hero and Villain/Antagonist (the fact that they use the same term show US how they're immature as authors, like a lot of other modern authors).
And I'm sad that some people (nobody Say how many, and this is suspicious to m Who suffered home violence see ComicUrsa as a model, when I'm Sorry but It isn't true. But I understand that a more real version of a dysfunctional family would be terrible for Who suffered that, cause It would show them how the responsabilities are more collective than we would like to know.
Taking those awful comics into account, I have zero clue why Ozai simply didn't kill Zuko after Ursa left. It's clear at this point Zuko is a 'disappointment' and Azula is passing expectations with flying colors. If anything Ozai should've been looking at Zuko sideways when he realized Zuko isn't catching up like he wants and trying to get rid of him so Azula can take his spot as she is more useful. Just wait a few months when Azulon's death dies down, let Zuko have a totally not staged 'accident' and boom, Azula is heir, problem child out of the way, Ozai gets what he wants with zero drawback.
Yeah, it doesn't make sense for a comics Ozai to keep Zuko alive, other than that Ozai probably still wanted to keep his only male heir.
In the show, though, there are more explanations to this.
The thing is, this would be a logical thing to do IF Ozai wanted to get rid of Zuko. Interestingly, though, in the show, Ozai actually wanted to make Zuko his heir. Yes, Zuko didn't meet his expectations, but when Ozai found out that Zuko supposedly killed the avatar and helped Azula take Ba Sing Se, he immediately accepted him as his heir and during the meeting, Zuko was at Ozai's right hand.
Ozai hated Zuko, because he wasn't a capable heir in his eyes, but deep down, he wanted Zuko to be one. And as soon as Zuko "became" the prince Ozai would approve of, Ozai instantly gave him his approval and support, even if it was purely conditional.
Azula was likely a last resort for Ozai, if Zuko would prove himself as completely untrustworthy. And it shows, given that he named Azula Fire Lord only after Zuko betrayed the FN and Azula herself is rather surprised that Ozai gave her this title.
Also, another reason why I think Ozai didn't kill Zuko in the show, is that it was hinted that Ursa and Ozai had a good early relationship. He didn't kill Zuko after she left, bacause he had likely promised Ursa that Zuko won't die and maybe he kept this promise out of some feelings he still had left for Ursa.

Gatekeeping destroys fandoms!! If you only allow people you consider to be "true fans" interact with the fandom then that fandom's going to disappear. Newcomers will never join, conversation will grow stale, interests will shift and the fandom will slowly fade.
