"Maiko isn't canon anymore! Mai isn't Izumi's mother!"
Bryke, the heads of Nickelodeon and Paramount, and whoever the fuck is writing the comics nowadays could all come out tomorrow and say those exact words while introducing their new Izumi-producing OC and I'd still be like "It sure is nice that Mai and Zuko are happily married and doing a great job governing the Fire Nation while raising their kids together."

How has no one addressed Zuko's unacceptable behavior at this page of The Search?
Tumblr media
So, basically, Azula was getting a bit paranoid and accused the Gaang of working with her mother to take her down. That's not an illogical assumption for Azula to make considering that Ursa "showed up" after years of missing and Azula immediately loses in an extremely important fight. That, plus the fact that Azula has severe trust issues and is mentally ill would clearly lead to the assumption that Ursa worked together with the Gaang (at least from Azula's pov)
Now, what does Zuko do when it becomes ridiculously obvious that his sister, who's mentally ill, is having a bit of a slip up? He puts his fist besides her face and starts fire bending (you can see the smoke!)
He sees his sister going through a hard time and actively threatens to burn her face if she doesn't shut up and ignore her own issues!
AND ALL THE GAANG DOES IS BITCH THAT THEIR SOURCE OF ENTRAINMENT IS ZUKO ABUSING HIS SISTER INSTEAD OF FOOLING AROUND WITH TOPH!!
LIKE, WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!

Remember when you make an idiotic mistake, no matter how bad it was, it’s still not anywhere nearly as stupid as Gene Yang having Zuko commit Azula to insane asylum for a year yet be surprised and confused when he takes her out to use her and she shows signs of mental illness.

The comics hint a possible redemption for azula.
Yeah, and I bet I know exactly how well written that arc would be😂

Nah fr I SCREAMMEEEDDDD at how dirty she was done in LOK
I am like, nothing short of absolutely disgusted at Bryke's portrayal of Katara in the comics and TLOK???
And apparently a majority of the audience is okay with this portrayal??
Just a recap:
This is Katara
Tumblr media
A girl with severe abandonment issues because her mom was murdered by a Fire Nation soldier and soon after her dad left to fight in the war, leaving her alone to take care of her brother and the village.
This is Aang
Tumblr media
A boy with chronic running away issues. This fault of his has led to a war extending up to 100 years causing death and destruction all around the world.
Katara does not acknowledge this fault of his because she idolises him as the Avatar but still his actions hurt her. A lot.
Tumblr media
Katara: It's not brave, it's selfish and stupid! We could be helping him and I know the world needs him, but doesn't he know how much we need him, too? How can he just leave us behind?
Logically speaking, a person with abandonment issues should never be with a person who has a tendency to run away from their issues. But Aang and Katara get together anyway.
But then the comics happen.
Literally anyone who cared about Katara as a character of her own (and not just as Aang's love interest) was infuriated at how she was portrayed. She was stripped of all her autonomy and characterization and was made into "The Avatar's Girlfriend". Nothing of her own.
Some people actually call this relationship sweet. Yuck.
But the thing is, it has panels like this:
Tumblr media
Katara, the girl with abandonment issues looks— that's right, abandoned and forgotten.
Even if the "abandonment issues" angle is thrown out of the window, the above panel from Katara's pov is a very unhealthy and shitty experience. (I can vouch with personal experience)
When you clearly don't have anyone else and the one person who you completely dedicate yourself to is completely avoiding you in favour of other people who don't really matter that much just because it makes them feel better/superior, how lonely and abandoned does that make you feel?
Also this sort of behaviour is undeniably selfish and self centred.
This problem of "Aang paying more attention to fangirls" exists in the show as well but atleast Aang corrects his behaviour or accepts that it was incorrect. The comics however:
Tumblr media
Katara, who was abandoned, ignored and lonely in this entire comic is reasonably upset about this. But instead of the comic validating her feelings, it makes her feel guilty???
What the fuck??
If this isn't a fulfilment of the male fetish of gfs/wives putting their own mental issues and feelings on a back bench just for the sake of the man's hApPineSs, then what is this?
Not to mention this fetish is pretty disgusting.
This is what young kids are supposed to learn form the comics?
This is harmful for boys AND girls.
But sure couple goals and soulmates or whatever.
Moving on,
The very existence of LOK!Katara is just—
Like what—?
This definitely isn't the Katara I know and love.
Katara, who was completely devastated by her mother's death but got her shit together immediately and seamlessly slipped into the role of her mother and was so damn good at it that her elder brother could conveniently use his coping mechanism to supress their mother's memories with Katara's instead.
You're telling me this same girl grew up to be a sad old lonely widow who spent her days and nights wallowing in the grief of the death of her husband—
Bullshit.
That's straight up romanticization of "life is nothing without you" trope where the wife just becomes a non-functional person after the death of her husband. That, and Bryke not giving a shit about Katara's character.
There's the evident drama of Aang ignoring his two other kids in favour of the Airbending one; leaving Katara with the other two kids. Just like how she was left alone in charge of things as a child.
And then there's this:
Tumblr media
They actually take the time to show us that Katara is sad and lonely and abandoned??
What family does she have left at the South pole? None.
And yet, people manage to think Katara is perfectly fine and happy.
Katara, a person with severe abandonment issues spends her entire life being abandoned??
What the fuck Bryke?
Like, it's pretty clear that they didn't give two shits about Katara as a character; she was just supposed to be a pretty arm candy for the Hero™ with some handy dandy waterbending abilities.
But if other people have done a spectacular job of turning this cardboard character into a fully fleshed out, multi dimensional character, why would you throw it away??
Like, that's just dumb.
Why would they take an infinite number of steps back to turn Katara back into a cardboard character and fulfil romanticized misogynistic tropes?
Much wow, many thanks.

hey! for todays protest, i made this little zine about palestine (holding just simple and basic information).
you can download the zine here, fold it yourself, and distribute it around.
no credit is needed. feel free to leave it around bars, protests, or wherever. simply print it (borderless) and fold it. here is a tutorial on how to do it.
dont stay silent. there is a genocide of horrendous, atrocious proportions going on. also if you are a zionist here to argue with me, i dont plan to entertain you at all, not on my art blog. fuck off, you'll be swiftly blocked. i see enough of you clowns on my main and i have no energy for you. you can skip the death threats too bc i dont give a shit.
(i'm off to get ready for a surgery now, i just wanted to post it before this. if you need anything, i might take a bit to reply)

Worst. To summon things up, this is after Zuko has asked Aang to kill him if he turns out to be like his father. Aang initially hesitates but then Katara gives him a grim nod that he should and then Aang agrees. They speak to Kuie about the colonies, and Zuko agrees to remove them before he learns that just removing the firebenders and people who clearly came from the Fire Nation would end up tearing families apart. He then pulls his support and wants to speak to Kuie to look at the situation more closely and see what they need to do about colonies that will be fair for everyone. Kuie refuses and declares that if Zuko doesn't force the colonists out, he will declare war on the Fire Nation. Aang gets called in and honestly is more on Kuie's side that anyone who is of Fire Nation descent has to leave and that Zuko is the bad guy for not following through with his promise to remove the colonies regardless of anything. They go to a colony and see that it's not perfect but can show that peace can be found in a village of mixed heritage. He meets some acolytes he gets offended that they accidentally did something they shouldn't and declares that the nations must be separated. Kuie and Zuko's armies come. Kuie to drive out the colonists, and Zuko to defend the people of the village, regardless of their heritage. Katara and Aang fly off so they can have this conversation where she talks about how she saw "their" family being mixed, but if Aang decides that they have to be separate, then that won't happen. So when he realizes that then Aang is all for the whole villages of mixed heritage, he's heralded as the great hero for saving everyone again. Zuko passes out because he has another identity crisis when he realizes that he has actually been correct the whole time.
And yeah, it's just a total character assassination of Zuko and Katara, honestly. Oh yeah, and the whole time, all of his friends except Suki think Zuko is going evil, and they need to kill him. Mai breaks up with him because he's keeping secrets. Granted, her old man is preparing a coup, but that's for another story.
I honestly still CANNOT digest the fact that they made Katara say this 👇
Tumblr media
The fact that Katara, a character who has stood up time and time again for what she believes in, says that she would just sit back and accept Aang's decisions even if it's something that she doesn't agree with just infuriates me to my core.
You're telling me that Katara, who as an inexperienced waterbender CHALLENGED and FOUGHT master Pakku because she BELIEVED that women should get the right to learn combative bending, is going to LET FAMILIES GET SEPARATED because Aang believes that's the right thing to do!?! You want me to believe that KATARA, who lied to her friend and went OUT OF HER WAY to SAVE a Fire Nation village, is just going to watch her boyfriend Aang KILL THEIR FRIEND Zuko?!?
The comics are a disgrace to her character and I will never stop yelling about it.

I think Yang honestly believed that by putting all the asylum patients in straightjackets no one could call him an Azula hater because it wasn't to hurt Azula but simply something that everyone there has to go through but instead of avoiding being called an Azula hater he made himself the prime target of Azula fans and also was rightfully called out for ableism.

Note
(this is an unconventional analysis, but please hear me out) (trigger warning-favoritism, talk of unwanted children, forced marriage, abuse, torture, humiliation, imprisonment, ableism)
The search makes me so sad because I actually feel that everyone in the search was actually mostly in character, but everything was amped up to the extreme-at least the negative stuff was, while the positive stuff was nearly gone.
Ursa's favoritism of Zuko? He was the reason her life was worth living. Ursa's disliking Azula? Now amplified to the point that Ursa basically sees Azula as the reason her life was messed up. Zuko's feeling that Azula made his life harder by being better? Now so amplified that Zuko basically thinks that Azula was the reason his life was awful. Zuko's inclination against Azula? Now he hates her. Zuko feeling Azula never feels any pain? Now he cannot conceive of her being in pain, and therefore ignores the rather obvious signs that she's not okay. There's more examples, but if I listed them all I'd be here a long while.
It's like almost all of their negative feelings towards Azula have been amplified, while almost all their positive or complex feelings disappeared.
While there is evidence that comics Zuko and comics Ursa do care about Azula, (for example, Ursa does mention Azula when she's leaving, and Zuko does try to help Azula at the end,) their negative feelings make their love for her...warped. Warped and twisted and (in Zuko's case) toxic. Ursa has too much pain connected with Azula, and Azula can sense it. She can sense she was unwanted and unloved. And Zuko's pain ends up making him unable to see that Azula was not Ozai, that Azula was not his abuser, that she can feel pain and hurt, etc. That she was a victim of abuse too. That he can hurt her.
It's just messed up.
Yeah, the comics characterization isn't entirely inaccurate, but it seems to take Ursa and Zuko's worst perceptions of and actions toward Azula and increased them tenfold. Jerklord Zuko isn't entirely out of character, but he's still worse than canon Zuko.
