As someone that genuinely loved bonlena’s friendship in season one. When you compare bonlena to other girl duos in that era like Brooke/Peyton, Blair/Serena or even just comparing them to Elena/Caroline. All of these girl duos have issues. Which is normal. But, the issue is that Bonnie never gets to vocalize how Elena or Caroline hurts her directly or indirectly. She accepts these things and just goes off-screen. Bonnie very rarely blames anyone or calls anybody out she just says what she disliked. Most fans claim they’ve disliked Bonnie due to her season 1-2 personality and only find her likable due to s6. “Bonnie’s independent that’s why….” Independence doesn’t meant no one should care lol.
Caroline has the privilege to tell Elena off. She thinks Elena’s selfish? Thinks Damon is a bad influence on her? She says that. Bonnie never once does that. She doesn’t label Elena or Caroline the root of all things. When she attempts to be more reserved it only happens off-screen. When it comes to Caroline, she’s taking up for her and still too in-tuned with her own life at points to notice Bonnie’s struggles.
Bonlena can’t discuss their issues and really doesn’t anymore once Caroline fills in that space as Bonnie is pushed out the plot outside her magic. When Abby is turned, Elena wanted to go an apologize. Caroline refused it, we get the line about how Bonnie is always the one hurt but very little done on Bonnie’s thoughts after that. This also applies to how the writers wrote Elena to revolved around the Salvatore’s.
Anyways i say all of this to say I don’t get how some people can label Bonnie fans or their work just Caroline or Elena bashing when their giving her feelings and a plot that has nothing to do with Caroline or Elena. Like you don’t think there should’ve been some discussion on how her friends didn’t notice she was dead all summer? Or when Elena tried to kill her? How Caroline is often wrapped up in dating drama to notice her bestfriend having a bad day? Bonnie deserves having a voice too.

The show unfortunately mostly seems to care about ships. Friendships and family dynamics be damned.

Why does Caroline get put on such a high pedestal? Jeremy get's nothing but shit from bamon fans, while Caroline is praised for unknown reasons. I'm a bamon fan but I don't like the Jeremy hate. I know his behaviour hasn't been the best this season (though I understand his reasons) but he has throughout the seasons been there more for Bonnie more than Caroline. He's not perfect but I think he deserves more credit than he gets.
I agree with you on the Caroline pedestal. For me, the only thing that really makes Baroline better than Belena is the fact that Bonnie doesn’t sacrifice herself for Caroline on a daily basis like she does with Elena, so it’s a little bit more equal. But tbh I don’t really buy any part of the Barolena trio. None of the friendships involved in it are consistent. The writers throw in a few good scenes between the girls once in a while but then right after go back to acting like the friendships don’t exist. (And that is a shame, because I really would like to root for the female friendships). But my annoyance for some of her fans aside, I actually don’t hate Caroline anymore. I’m just kind of neutral towards her overall lol.
I’m one of the few Bamon fans who didn’t hate Beremy, so I see where you’re coming from on the Jeremy front. I was never able to ship JB that hard because I didn’t get the feels towards them like I do with Bamon, but I respected their relationship. His flaws and mistakes aside, Jeremy WAS the only person who was really losing his shit over Bonnie being gone ( while Elena was too busy obsessing over Damon and Caroline was too focused on her drama with Stefan). And considering his current mindset and the fact that Bonnie “died” right after an abrupt phone call with him and he never got a proper goodbye with her, I don’t blame him for going off the rails a little. Jeremy is definitely not perfect but I agree that he gets a lot of unnessary hate.

I originally loved Caroline, whereas Elena was more of the girl next door, she worked hard and was materialistic and felt like the third wheel still (I felt like both Caroline and Elena were closer to Bonnie than each other.) But now as a vampire, she is suddenly a badass unstoppable machine, who takes out vampires more than ten times her age which is not right. I also hate that she took Bonnie's spot in the frienship. (I only think of Monnie as a true friendship now.)
You’re right. In season one, we saw that Caroline and Elena were basically together by their individual friendship with Bonnie. Caroline and Elena weren’t really friends and remember the flashback in 3x22?
Elena: Caroline Forbes told me that my ponytail lacked ‘zhuzh’.
Matt: I don’t even know what that means.
Bonnie: It means Caroline is driving Elena crazy, as usual.
That basically confirms that they weren’t close. You don’t call your best friend by their first and last name in that context followed by Bonnie telling Matt (and us) that Caroline drives Elena crazy pretty often and it kind of contradicts what Elena said to Damon in the 3rd episode:
"we’ve been friends since the third grade and that means something to me"
- well what kind of friends were you Elena?
But whether they were ‘friends’ or not is beside the point, the point is they were not as close as Bonnie/Caroline or Bonnie/Elena but now Caroline/Elena overshadows both. Bonnie was probably the one who kept those two close and helped them become friends and stay friends yet she’s the one who is now on the outskirts of the friendship. It’s really sad.
I agree that Monnie seems like the only true friendship on the show. Hell, he was the only one that knew something was up with Bonnie in those three months. Him wondering if he did something wrong was heartbreaking while the two girls who we are led to believe are extremely close to Bonnie and care about her believed everything to be fine. They were happy with minimal contact from Bonnie (need I remind everyone that they never had physical contact with Bonnie? They never heard her voice or saw her face.) but clearly Matt wasn’t which now makes them my favourite friendship on the show.
Monnie FTW!!!
I got a bit carried away here…..lol
Anyway, I also agree with you concerning Caroline’s sudden transition into Super Vampire. .i thought she was awesome the first half of season 2 then it just got stupid and she seemed so perfect and it got boring.
Caroline’s had 3 season to shine, she’s had her turn now give Bonnie a chance!

I care nothing about Barolena...that shit is dead to me.
If my eyes rolled any harder they'd be on the ground. While they're being all light-hearted about this "Bonnie is the anchor" business, did Bonnie mention that this shit involves pain? Prolly not...can't give no one no bad news. Ever.

i said on another platform that it would’ve been nice if Bonnie separated herself from Elena after she tried to kill her in s4. Someone replied with how stupid my idea was and that it doesn’t make sense. Yes, Elena’s humanity was off, and she didn’t have a choice in turning that switch. I do agree! however, that didn’t change what she did try to do with the switch off. It only took her emotions out the situation not the action at hand. Elena in s6 even tells Caroline that turning your humanity switch off is a mistake.
But why is that idea of Bonnie having separation and agency in her own feelings so negative? It never should’ve been a point where Bonnie is the only one giving while the others aren’t doing the same. Elena just gives a quick apology and Bonnie says she understands it wasn’t her and she herself hasn’t been who she is in a long time. But, frankly that isn’t enough. If Bonnie took some time to step back and reflect this also could’ve kept her from dying later on in s4. She wasn’t fighting to bring Jeremy back for herself, as his girlfriend. She only did it for Elena, there was no input in on Bonnie’s emotions and that’s the problem there!
s1-2 Bonnie is deemed annoying, and judgemental by all for her thoughts with vampires. Not only do fans ignore her trauma then… but I can’t stress enough how many times I’ve seen people claim they never liked Bonnie after how she stepped away from Caroline during her transition. Then argue that Bonnie never would’ve treated Elena the same. Bonnie gave Caroline a promise, and never had to fulfill that promise yet she certainly didn’t mind fulfilling what she told to Caroline to Elena AFTER Elena attacked her first. It was not expression then, Bonnie said she knew what she was doing. She referred to Elena then as a shell of her bestfriend meaning she didn’t see her as Elena anymore.
This goes back into s3 and how heavily the plot goes to push the idea that Bonnie’s life and or feelings is always secondary to everyone else. We get a line about how she’s always the one hurt but never an emotional moment from Bonnie herself. Tbfh, Bonnie should’ve stepped back in s3 then but carrying on. Anyways having Bonnie step away and letting others actually apologize or try to fix things with her would’ve been great.
The only reason people are so quick to attack Bonnie fans for saying she should’ve stepped away or Elena/Damon/Stefan/Caroline whomever should’ve apologized or worked for her forgiveness, treated her the same…is because a lot of you don’t want to picture Bonnie in a space where she is not benefiting everyone else. It’s suddenly OOC for you to fathom that maybe other people should treat Bonnie with the same respect. I love Bonnie’s loyalty and protectiveness over her friends, but she deserves the same.
Seeing how Elena could’ve made her own amends would’ve been much better than a quick apology.

I’m sorry if you were asked this before but if you could’ve had bonlena or baroline become a couple in TVD which one would you pick? I always thought bonlena was cute in the beginning and had better chemistry but the writers ruined it as usual by season 3. Baroline would’ve been okay but idk if it would’ve been long term
I thought about it for a hot minute…
Bonlena did have better chemistry in the earlier seasons. How they act we know they spend all their time together. Elena’s very Salvatore centered post s3 and doesn’t recognize that she can be hurting Bonnie emotionally indirectly or that Bonnie suffering.
This exists in Baroline too. I think it’s forgotten that Bonnie said season 1 that she can’t talk to Caroline. From here Caroline did improve in moments like calling out Abby which I do find problematic that’s for the writers though ,killing those witches for Bonnie, calling out that she thinks Shane is creepy, and wanting Bonnie to admit when she’s upset. Season 5 Bonnie wasn’t around no one verbally heard from her there is no strong narrative excuse as to why someone as controlling as Caroline is wouldn’t want to check-in with her. Rudy died and no one but Matt asked Bonnie when she got back how was she doing. Season 6 Caroline had her humanity off and when Bonnie needed emotional support from both her and Elena. It wasn’t there. Season 8 argument between Baroline still showed that Bonnie has to snap in order to be seen by Caroline. Meaning that problem in season 1 where Bonnie felt like she couldn’t talk to Caroline still exists. Caroline did apologize though.
To sum it up I could see and believe in both as ships in the series. It just needs more push and acknowledgement to Bonnie’s feelings. I don’t have a preference for either because bi!Bonnie should’ve been canon. Kat pitched it before certain witch was bisexual but you know they never listen to what Kat had to say for Bonnie no matter what she did. Tbh, Caroline would kiss Bonnie first between her and Elena! Caroline gets the girl first ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i think a lot of people say legacies had a lot of potential but tbh it was never going to be good. i dont think hope existing was ever a good idea so her leading a show and having elena and buffy traits is an odd mix and was already a bad sign. the poc supporting characters not having basic development until seasons 3/4? um. landon highkey being the (boring) protagonist because they do admit that Hope shouldn’t be leading a show and want the outsider trope. he’s closer to the elena archetype too. the plot being non-existent and the friendship theme ? is quite honestly perplexing because what friendships
buffy worked because there were actual philosophical concepts behind the conflict and decisions buffy made. they teach it at the university level! buffy also wouldnt have survived without her friends. they embody different aspects that buffy slowly develops on her coming of age journey. how could a writer team who supposedly loved buffy miss all these points and that it doesn’t work for hope and the poc cast they both didn’t care for but wanted so they could be a walmart scooby gang?
And HARRY POTTER where? Why was it pitched as HP omg they could not write as well as a woman writing for 8-12 year olds which is sad
ranting about legacies this morning lmaoooo this is so incoherent
Tumblr media
Bestie, idk if you seen this tweet from Julie. The show was never going to be good knowing that this was her inspo in mind. Not only was this insensitive and ignorant to the families and victims. Children shouldn’t have to be the hero in places that supposed to be educating them. Teachers and staff don’t come to work to die? Like lady, this is NOT the situation to blend realism and fiction. Then Josie was still shoot at when someone did break into the school—listen. Anyway!
TO couldn’t even figure out how to mix Hope someone who’s a fluke in the supernatural world but here anyway! so legacies struggling with the concept wasn’t at all surprising especially how Plecverse writers did it.
To me Hope is an LGS version of an Elena/Buffy/Bonnie mix in characterization while never properly servicing her either which is fucked up she’s supposed to be the leading lady. I understand, the amount of trauma she faced at a young age which is why she’s so protective to Landon (and her friends to an extent) but try to expand on her life? So many seasons of Hope and I don’t know what she’d want to do for a career. While Elena’s writing got worst overtime you at least knew her ambitions. Hope’s motives were only for Landon. I think one of those writers created and self-inserted into him (if I’m wrong somebody say it..)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not to say Barolena has no issues because the residual anti-blackness was loud. I do think, Julie wanted an all white (I know Kaylee is half Japanese) girl trio and legacies was finally the time to debut that. Hence, why Hope was shown to be older than the twins at first. Then changed to be younger to fit in their group. But, with that change suddenly Hope is being bullied by them and never allowed to do something is just…. Lmao LISTEN?
Tumblr media
JP never planned on expanding on the POC in her show simply because we were “supposed” to be grateful she included them in the first place. Which was another downfall. How do you have multiple actors of color and no one has a leading storyline? She just wanted to lessen those racist claims but made it worse. Why did it take you 3 shows to get a darkskin woman in the franchise too as a series regular? I remember some fans calling her out on Twitter, for having Matt Davis racist ass in front of all her POC actors on promo posters.
Buffy managed to include her friends and keep Buffy as a central focus to the show and its problems. I think they just slapped DRR’s face on every promo just to get people to watch initially because it never seemed like “her” show until Danielle was older by season 4. I assumed Danielle being younger and the LGCS actors being old enough to been in TVD/TO it was easier to write for them w/out it being too much? If that makes sense.
I know Hope was supposed to have a bigger storyline with Maya and they backed out of that completely to give other characters room to shine. By that they meant the twins 🤣.
This was long as hell but to sum it up idk why people esp white fans who double as Bonnie antis love dragging and arguing her unimportance when so many character even the white women are treated the same way with minor differences. If it’s an issue and makes Bonnie super unlikable than I’m sorry wouldn’t Hope be just that? Wouldn’t freya? Davina be those things too? Even the twins-
Thank you 💜

#Lol everytime i see this funeral scene i find new things to be mad abt#the bane of my existence#and not in a good way#everybody in this scene pissed me off#IN A LINE!
yeah bonnie's death was really awful as a whole. CAROLINE AND ELENA BARELY BOTHERED TO INVESTIGATE because they were thriving at college, matt was the only one who made any attempt to reach out, tyler gets a pass bc he was in nola....... and ugh bonnie's death being spent entirely on beremy interactions is yikes
warning this isn’t an MFG friendly post whatsoever. There’s nothing great or honorable about that scene for Bonnie. You can look it up on YouTube there’s more people having emotional break downs over Caroline/Elena’s reactions than being sympathetic with Bonnie. Ya know the person whose actually dead.
“When Caroline cries I cry.”
“When Elena drops the feathers I lost it.”
“Even in death Bonnie remains selfless!”
Bonnie wasn’t just dead for a day or two. She was dead for months on end and they didn’t notice or care until they wanted something out of her. Her body was left in that cave for months. There’s absolutely no way to narratively break down that scene and feel empathy for her friends. Keep in mind Bonnie’s father died and it is mentioned that she didn’t show up for his funeral. She did however have to watch a man that looked like Stefan slit his throat open in the mist of that. Jeremy was the only way they communicated through Bonnie during this time and again no red flags? Forwood gets a whole reunion during this scene. Then instead of the scene allowing some self-awareness(which is too much to ask of them obviously) the scene turns into Bonnie’s spirit comforting them. Its just bad and coveted in the thing plec loves woc suffering and playing slaves to white characters.
When Bonnie is eventually brought back to life she’s the anchor suffering again. She gets one line or mention on her father’s passing and moves on from that. Abby doesn’t get a mention in none of this which is such a grand backpedal after seeing her parents in s4 try and fight for her. Which wasn’t seen from anyone since s1. So you’d think after struggling and trying to free their child from her reckless ass behavior (love Bonnie deeply but hey) they wouldn’t check on their kid? Yet we get to see a whole season of Caroline’s grief process to Liz’s passing plus a funeral. (Which is why to me…i don’t find it that sad and I feel nothing in a rewatch during that era.)
Throw the whole script away and these “friendships”.

Frankly, I don't care that Candice said Elena and Caroline will heartbroken at Bonnie's death.
We've seen Elena when she's heartbroken over anyone other than the Salvatores.  She makes the entire thing about herself and everyone around her tries to make her feel better.
I guarantee that when everyone finds out, Elena will whine about it being her fault and the rest of the scene will be Caroline, Jeremy, and Matt putting their grief aside to comfort her while Bonnie goes on and on about how Elena shouldn't feel sorry because she is the best friend in the world and Bonnie's just so glad she could die to bring her BFF happiness.
Tumblr media
Btw, here's the link to where Candice says it.  http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/vampire-diaries-season-5-candice-641671
