In the corner of his eye, their butler almost silently walked in with a small silver tray in his hand, heading straight for his mother on her settee. Something was murmured between them but Benedict didn’t pay attention. His ears were deafened anyway when a squeal erupted from Edmund, and chubby little hands stretched out and clapped at the window. A smile pulled on Benedict’s lips as Eloise grumbled that she never wanted a child.

“Benedict?” Violet said, her voice unusually quiet and not simply because she was at the other end of the room.

He craned his head back to see passed Edmund. “What is it?”

His mother frowned down at her lap, a white sheen of paper unfolded there. Benedict didn’t like the sombre look on her face— he hadn’t seen it often. It was enough to curdle a sour feeling in his stomach.

“You may wish to sit,” she said calmly, but the tension in her face was anything but, “and read this." Violet offered out an opened letter towards him in the air, and when she looked up, Benedict knew that he needed to take it.
