Whats your process for drawing reptilian characters? Also what are some important tips for drawing them that really helps the piece?

So first things first to start this all off, I use a lot of squares and triangle shapes. BG3 actually helped quite a bit with solidifying this for me too with how they went about the dragonborn in that

Here's a bit of a visual for what I mean with squares and triangles. obviously, the snout will vary, as will the mouth and head shape but its a start. Sometimes the head shape can be more of a pinched oval, or an egg shape too

What also helps me is (for side profiles at least) is knowing where the jawline is and where the cheek bone--so to speak--also is. Other features like eyes and mouth fall into place after that in where they go and such, but using a t shape for the eye and face alignment also doesnt hurt. Ya know, that one art trick everyone uses for faces

Another way to look at drawing reptilian faces (or even other races sometimes too) is like you're squishing it a bit. And using a W shape for the mouth as well.

Granted a lot of these examples I'm using are drawn on the fly and don't get into the nitty gritty details but sometimes having a visual helps cuz I'm bad at describing shit with just words, There's also the fact that I like to cover up some of my own shortcomings with ectra little details and lines so breaking it down to the basics is kinda like my way of teaching

And if some of yall wanna see what I mean with these examples and how it translates to a final product, here's the shape ot the face of one of my most recent pic/updates. Got a Y shape for the brow and nose, square ish features for everything else, and in this case the mouth is a bit more beak shape but its still got that W going

I know I've used shit like Taran Fiddler and the works of some of my friends for help with this stuff, and sometimes even looking at mammalian face shapes helps. If you wanna get freaky with it too, looking at fishy heads is always an idea

to sum it all up and answer your question: yes you can.

manifestation is limitless you create reality, you can revise anything and everything, the past exists only in our minds and as creators of our reality we decide it.

when it comes to my beliefs this ties into shifting, which splits into two theories (multiverse and consciousness), so you can look into that, but honestly loass and reality shifting are very similar concepts intertwined with each other.

oh and another thing about the show (sorry i'm going to bed soon i'm hanging out with a friend tomorrow but i have to say this) is that. well. okay. i fucking hate merlin the character in s5. it's a very polar relationship i have with him because one minute i will detest his horrible selfish and lame decisions and the next i will love him because he sucks so bad and sadstyle. but like.

i liked him for most of s1-s4 honestly! he was loveable and a tryhard in all the wrong ways and rather annoying and appeared extremely useless (in an endearing way), but was 'surprisingly' competent when he needed to be! perfect formula to make A Character That Jay Enjoys. i also really appreciated the moments where he seemed to almost drop his ideals to save arthur. that was good. it added depth! he made stupid, horrible decisions because he loves arthur. awesome <3

aaand then they took it too far with s5. merlin has seemingly completely abandoned his goal of convincing arthur to accept magic—just because one day, mordred might kill arthur. like come on. the merlin from the earlier seasons would be THRILLED at that one scene in s5 where arthur is genuinely considering accepting magic into camelot again, but no, it might lead to arthur dying one day, so merlin can't even consider it.

it's just so frustrating, you know? there's this entire character personality established—and then such a jarring shift to something plausible but kind of really shitty in the 5th season. yes, i know, it's after 10 prosperous years of peace in camelot and etc etc etc. so merlin has changed.

and it's not even out of character, is the worst part! merlin would plausibly act like that. i just think that there was suchhh a better way to take it, such a better way to write it, that would keep the inevirable tragedy elements and keep merlin more along the preestablished lines of his written personality. you know?

i can understand why he made the decisions he did, and they fit the pattern of decisions he's made in the past! but there are decisions that he could have made that would be a lot more in character with who he is.

it just bugs me so, so much, because he's essentially a class traitor. he's become a centrist. he's betraying what he had fought so hard to even come close to.

it's great setup for a tragedy to be honest because it's like. You're Causing The Future You're Trying To Avoid By Trying To Avoid It. but it could have been done so much better, i think. or so differently, that didn't require merlin to give up everything he once believed so strongly in.

I think that was pretty much the point.

the prophecy said that merlin would help Arthur bring Albion into a golden age of peace and bring magic back to the lands. Morgana was also destined to betray them, and Mordred was destined to kill Arthur.

merlin was constantly told that if Morgana ever came into power or Mordred lived than the prophecy would not pass and I think that's exactly what made it not pass. merlin became so devoted to protecting Arthur and making sure he's safe in all sense of the word that he let everything else fade away. nothing was more important to him than Arthur in season five.

imagine your whole life you have this special gift that you don't understand and the very use of it could get you killed so you can only hide it away. then you're given a purpose for it. for merlin, I suppose he wanted to do good with his power and make it to where no other magic user would live like that again. so he sticks with the whole "keep Arthur alive" business and that's what his life turns into. I honestly don't think merlin had anything else for him except Arthur.(not in the sense he doesn't care about others. but like he doesn't really have a life outside of Arthur. he doesn't care for his physician role much. also Gwaine saying how him and merlin don't speak much anymore comes to mind.)

he still had that knack of protecting other magic users/creatures and making sure they were safe and wouldn't get caught in Camelot, but his life became more about Arthur. and really, I don't think it has been any other way since season three. so yes he was selfish, but selfish in the way that he would rather keep Arthur alive and safe rather than allow the whole "Arthur dies so Albion is free" thing to pass. that's what doomed him, in the end. that's exactly why the prophecy passed. (it is my own personal belief that Gwen legalized magic during her reign, so the prophecy passed in some type of way.)

and for him being annoying and incompetent, I think that mostly was just around Arthur and sometimes the knights. it was a mixture of what he's actually like but also trying to get them to see him as unsuspecting so they wouldn't find out the truth about him. like "merlin? a sorcerer? have you met him? he's a clumsy idiot"

I definitely think there was a better way they could have portrayed this without causing what you're talking about, but idk this is how my mind explains it

I think that the thing that pisses me off the most is that, in most works with this "forgiving too quick" problem, they knowledge how much Lucifer's actions affected Adam even thousands of years later and SOMEHOW HE IS THE ONE APOLOGIZING FIRST. hi hey i'm talking to you about bbc merlin. or else

re: guinevere and her relationship with arthur. okay. this is sooo much for me because, like, honestly? i love them together. i love the way they were written, i love their respective flaws, i love the pining and the crushing and how much they adore one another when they do get together!

however.

first of all. arthur. i wish he'd had character development that stuck around longer than the next chance he got to bully merlin...honestly...in the first four seasons he's SO bad with this . he shows all this genuine consideration for the fsct that maybe, maybe servants are actually human beings—and then merlin comes along and he's like. oh haha no that could never be true. look at my useless pet dunce. he single handedly disproves that!

there are definitely times when merlin deserves it. there are definitely times when i would have said the exact same thing to him. but it's constant from arthur, and it serves almost as an attempt at a reminder that arthur is better, arthur is royal, men are just mean to their buddies, merlin is a servant and servants are property, etc.

i think that there is absolutely a way to have done this that serves more to show that arthur himself was born into biases that he clings strongly to, just because he was raised with them! i truly think that that's what they were aiming for—and succeeded at surprisingly often! and i think that they could have done way, way better.

for all his obvious love for gwen, and for all i adore their relationship, his sort of 'gwen i love you i don't care that you're a servant' is so selfish and insubstantial when you look at...almost any interaction he has with merlin. this is more of a watsonian complaint, honestly, but there are doylist elements to it and i think the writers could have done so much better actually keeping arthur's development consistent.

and secondly, guinevere! oh, my beloved. i adore her. i have very few watsonian complaints about her, if any at all. however. she is a woman. she is a black woman. and that means that she is going to be written with very little regard for her everything.

again, i love her relationship with arthur! i love her tenacity and strength and vulnerability. i don't love how she's written at times. once she becomes queen, it feels like A Role She's Playing rather than her actually being queen guinevere pendragon. she is a major load bearing wall in all of arthur's development, and she's cast aside as a character in favour of giving the white men more screen time! she very rarely gets moments to herself, instead being used as scaffolding for arthur's story.

and, like, to a certain extent? i get it. this show is about merlin, and his relationship with arthur. but even fucking gaius is more of an independant character than guinevere. gauis holds his own story, while guinevere gets hers squashed down in favour of supporting arthur.

also!!! i'm so mad that the writers just sort of decided to...end merlin and gwen's friendship. they hardly talk at all in s5! like fucking come on! they were best friends and it was so fun and they schemed together 😭 ughghh.

anyways yeah those are my thoughts on arthur and guinevere. i might talk.more later but this is already an entire essay so good luck have fun and thank you graciously for reading this, if you do. haha!

a lot of this is actually the reason why I don't like Arthur and Gwen im so sorry. I totally understand where you're coming from, and I love seeing different takes on this. I completely agree with Arthur's character development though !

I think a lot of it does come from the way Arthur was raised. Uther is shown to have clear disregard for servants (ex: s01e04 the poisoned chalice) so showing that he cares about merlin is so difficult for him that he tries to play it off like "yeah this is my servant merlin he's an idiot. we're NOT friends cause I don't like him." its not even until later seasons he can admit that he does care about merlin and what happens to him but plays it off as a joke after. so that's why it doesn't make sense to me how it was with Gwen. like yea she got mad at him like two times about how he can be terrible to people of lower class and that's it. but he never had that development of like "yea!! it doesn't matter that Gwen is a servant!!" and that's what bothered me. so here's where I think we differ: to me it was as if they took Arthur x merlin but made it straight and just pushed Arthur and Gwen into a relationship fast, therefore skipping any development that should have been made. (im not getting into this in this post, but I could elaborate. I also could talk forever about what having Uther Pendragon as a father does to a child, which is sort of irrelevant here.)

I do love Guinevere! she's honestly one of my favorites and I admire her greatly. I just think her characterization was ruined in season 4 specifically. a scene that always bothered me is from s04e06 a servant of two masters. Arthur is worried about merlin and tries going off alone to find him. Gwen is trying to stop him before saying that Gwaine will go with him. I just think that early seasons Gwen would never do that. she would go with Arthur actually. it just felt like her character was reduced to just someone Arthur can talk to while his relationship with merlin was explored and added to. and a huge part of that comes from the fact that Arthur x Gwen wasn't really explored outside of them not able to be together in s03 and whenever the cheating thing happened and when Gwen was evil for a few episodes. and I think that was mainly to show how the impact it has on Arthur.

I also think Guinevere was a great queen! but it also feels like she kind of just really changed after she made that change. this is evident through her relationship with merlin. it didn't really feel there in seasons four and five, especially after she became queen. a lot of this comes from he was still a servant and she was like the highest rank she could achieve. (this also plays into merlin watching all of his friends become nobles and of high ranks and he's just a servant. I could really expand on this.) so while yes they would still love to be friends, there was always going to be that "im your boss now" that haunted their interactions. hated that tbh

Ratio laid awake for hours once he had returned to his room. Why did you have such an affect on him? You made him so angry, but so…intrigued. He didn’t understand it, and there was nothing Ratio hated more than not understanding things.

The next morning, he woke up later than usual, which was very odd for him. Most likely due to the fact that he had laid awake for so long…

After getting ready for the day, he made his way over to the breakfast hall. And that’s when he saw you, sitting by a few of your friends and chatting amiably with them. You looked so peaceful, which irked him further. Why did you get to have peace of mind instead of him?

To his surprise, you noticed him standing there, breakfast-in-hand, staring off at your table. You offered a wave, motioning for him to come over.

He’s never walked over faster.

“Good morning!” He heard you greet him, smiling at him.

“It was, until I saw you.” He mumbled back, taking a bite of his breakfast.

“Eh? You’re the one who came over here…”

“Shut your mouth.”

You grinned and rolled your eyes, before turning to your other friend to talk with them. He felt a strange ache in his chest as he watched you interact with your friends. It was akin to that of jealousy. Jealousy? No way. There was no way he was…jealous. They’re just your friends, after all.

“Hey, Ratio,” your voice interrupted him from his thoughts, “did you end up sleeping last night, or were you too busy thinking of me?~” He wanted to rip that cocky smirk off your face.

“Shut up. Yes, I got sleep. Eventually,” he replied, turning his head away to hide his face for a moment.

You just nudged his shoulder, giggling at him. “Eventually? What time?”

“…at approximately 2:43 in the morning…”

“Ha! You remembered the minutes, too? Aren’t you worried about looking…y’know, pathetic?”

“Pathetic…?” You immediately spotted the hurt in his eyes, and ruffled his hair as you quickly apologized.

“No, no, you aren’t pathetic! If anything…it’s kind of cute~”

Ratio’s cheeks have never been more red at that moment.
