It would be no stretch of the imagination to say that Laios and Mithrun had, at best, a strained working relationship. They had spent quite some time on opposite ends of the narrative, embodying ‘crazy monster man who would become dungeon lord and plunge the world into an unending hell’ and ‘ruthless elven military leader here to mete out their own brand of justice with impunity’, respectively.

Still, Kabru was a miracle worker, and while he’d utterly failed to reconcile the two during the dark old days, these were the bright new days of the future, where anything was possible, apparently including getting (parts of) Team Laios and (some of) the Canaries on personable terms. It turns out that when you manage to rid the world of a voring demon (Mithrun)/work together to prepare your sister for a giant feast for a celebratory “Congrats for surviving the fall of a dungeon and not getting eaten yourself!” block party (Laios), you (collective) can forgive a lot of things.

The death of the demon hasn’t brought Mithrun’s desires back, and neither has it chased away whatever is causing his insomnia. Now that Kabru is no longer always free to give pre-bedtime footrubs, Mithrun has fallen back on spells and potions to find sleep. He’s holding one of the latter in his hands now, contemplating the flask when a creak announces the opening of his bedroom door. Mithrun’s head snaps up, and only the vague awareness that Cithis would be very unhappy if he told her he’d wasted her potion and needs another one, actually, please and thank you stops him from teleporting it into the shape silhouetted in the doorway. Damn, hadn’t he locked that thing?

“What’s that?” With absolutely no sense of propriety, the shape starts moving into the room before Mithrun can ask it what the hell it wants. A little further into the room and no longer blocking the only source of light, the hazy shadow resolves itself into the horrible, towering shape of one Laios Touden.

The two stare at one another for a long moment. Laios is happily awaiting an answer to his totally normal and totally sane question, and Mithrun wonders if he’s wandered into the wrong room and started preparing for a night in someone else’s bed. Outside of a dungeon, his sense of direction is once again totally fucked. But he glances around, sees his armor folded neatly on the table, his pack sitting in the corner. Yyyyes, definitely his own room. His one good eye flickers back to Laios, who seems to see no problem with continuing to stand at the doorway of the Canary Captain’s room with no explanation.

“Sleeping draught,” Mithrun answers finally.

“What’s it made of?”

The sparkle in Laios’s eyes makes it clear what kind of answer he’s looking for. Mithrun takes no pleasure in squashing the tallman’s hopes and dreams, but he doesn’t exactly feel bad either. “Just herbs.” Then, because he feels it necessary, he adds, “We don’t consume monsters where I come from.” Where anyone comes from, actually. That seems to have been a uniquely Island Dungeon phenomenon, thanks to Team Laios. And while food is food is food, he also can’t say he’s sorry to never eat a walking mushroom again.

“Oh.” Laios seems to deflate just a little, and Mithrun keeps staring at him, expecting the tallman to leave at any moment now that monsters have been removed from the equation. Instead, Laios moves closer, and Mithrun tenses, grip tightening around the sleeping potion. Needs must, and Cithis would simply have to deal with remaking him the potion, but Laios only raises the tray that had been hitherto unaddressed in his hands.

“Well, we were just having dinner, and we thought that since you really helped with chopping up Falin’s dragon body, you might want something to eat....” He trails off, seeing the expression on Mithrun’s face. “Oh, don’t worry,” Laios continues cheerfully. “We’re not done prepping her yet!”—Mithrun’s face is carefully impassive here, the deliberately unaffected air of someone who doesn’t love the words he’s just heard—“This is just beef.” He sets the tray with a soft clink of cutlery on the table next to Mithrun’s armor. “But if you’re sleeping now, you could always have it tomorrow for breakfast!” Mithrun just nods wordlessly. A collage of a wild-eyed, monster-crazed Laioses—the impression he’d from the other adventurers up til now—flashes through his mind. But the tallman seems vaguely normal now, even if he had casually mentioned his sister in a way that most people would find unpalatable (hah).

“Do you know,” Laios says, totally unprompted, just as Mithrun is believing that he’ll finally leave him to finish taking his potion, “that when I can’t sleep, I count satyrs? Maybe that would help you.”

There’s another long moment as they stare at one another—Laios cheerfully expectant, Mithrun at a total loss for words that, for once, has nothing to do with his piteously atrophied social skills. Satyrs do not figure anywhere in the top million things Mithrun would like to think about prior to bed, especially in multiples. In fact, there is literally not a single thing on god’s green earth that he would hate more to think of in the moments before a reluctantly-inflicted rest than goat-like monsters. Even the most tolerable iteration, where the goat-demon is pulp beneath his bloodied fists, is definitely not conducive in any way shape or form to the peaceful and relaxing repose that is usually the goal of sleep.

Mithrun eventually finds it in himself to say, “Is that so.” His tone is so flat that, had any philosophers or engineers been present, they could have derived a new method of ensuring level construction from those three words alone.

Laios doesn’t notice, though. Content in a friendship overture well executed, he waves Mithrun good night and finally, thankfully, leaves, closing the door with a soft click behind him. In the greatest exercise of will to date in Mithrun’s not-inconsiderable life, he does not knife, strangle, disembowel, replace the brains of, or otherwise maim Laios as he leaves—though perhaps the down in his pillow might have been a superior alternative to whatever was currently occupying the space between the tallman’s ears, Mithrun notes sourly, flopping back onto his bed. He cannot down the sleeping draught fast enough.

He does not count satyrs.

This is so good, and it doesn't even include what I consider the biggest thing Mithrun does: Actually listen to Kabru, answer Kabru's #1 most important, life-defining question "why do dungeons collapse?" and then he trusts Kabru.

Getting this question answered is something Kabru has been desperately asking about, studying, traveling, trying to find answers to HIS ENTIRE LIFE. It's basically his #1 goal!!! HE NEEDS TO KNOW THIS. Without this knowledge, he might be able to stop the island's dungeon from collapsing, but he knows he can't stop future dungeon collapses!

His larger life's mission hinges on being able to get this information!

Kabru has studied the subject so thoroughly, his theory "you need to starve the dungeon by removing as many people as possible and only sending in a small team", which he presents to the Canaries at their first meeting, is so revolutionary and clever that the other Canaries all think he's crazy, but Mithrun, a dungeon expert, says "Wait, tell me more about your idea. You're on to something."

How important is finding out why dungeons collapse to Kabru?

When he realizes he might be denied the chance to learn this, despite otherwise being a completely controlled, pragmatic individual, Kabru snaps, completely loses his cool, and takes Mithrun hostage. He starts screaming at the other Canaries to answer his question!

He becomes irrational and panicked at the idea that if he doesn't learn why dungeons collapse now, he may never get another chance to find out!!!!

But this information is secret! SUPER secret. MILSIRIL DID NOT TELL HIM. He tried to join the Canaries and they wouldn't let him in.

I'm pretty sure if the elven government finds out that Mithrun is the source of the information leak in Merini (he's the one that told a tall-man and now everyone seems to know, it doesn't matter that all the information didn't come from Kabru but from Laios' party) he could be in big trouble.

It's a forbidden government secret!!! He told it to a tall-man who is probably a known troublemaker for the elven government! I'm sure Kabru spent plenty of time going to government offices and libraries, asking questions, and being told "I can't tell you that," or "you can't read that book," or even "that book doesn't exist."

Mithrun essentially commits treason by telling Kabru the secret behind how dungeons works, like a scientist telling someone from an enemy country how to make an atomic bomb. You get executed for that shit if they catch you!!!

Yes, part of this is because Mithrun "doesn't care"... But we know that he can and DOES say no to things that he knows will cause him problems! Being court-martialed by the Canaries or executed would for sure be a problem.

Mithrun chooses to answer Kabru's question because not telling him would make their time in the dungeon more difficult. Kabru would be fighting him the whole way, not trusting him, not understanding Mithrun's goals.

Mithrun looked at everything he'd learned and seen about Kabru up until they fell into the dungeon, and made a judgement:

If this guy knows what I know, he would be on my side. He would not get in my way, and he would try to help me get to the demon. He also isn't going to recklessly spread the forbidden knowledge about the demon, because he'll understand that people knowing about the demon won't stop them from wanting to get their wishes granted by the dungeon. He will understand that the only way to protect the world from the dungeons is to keep people out of them as much as possible.

So he told Kabru the truth about himself, and everything he knows about dungeons.

Mithrun looking out for Kabru

-waiting for Kabru to wake up instead of moving through the dungeon by himself

-warning Kabru about an impending monster

-waking Kabru up from the nightmare after letting him sleep for five hours

-warning Kabru about the danger of the dungeon

-teleporting them away from the dire wolves

-directing Kabru so they can escape the Griffon

-giving Kabru advice on his plan to make Laios dungeon lord 💀

-letting Kabru sleep while they wait for correspondence from the canaries

-snapping Kabru out of his panic when he was blaming himself and helping Kabru realize that he does wants to live by trying to kill him LOL

After this point I think it’s just Kabru looking out for Mithrun, so I don’t have any more examples

"Catching Fire", Chapter 23

Part 3: The Enemy

Chapter 23: Katniss has to wake everyone up to explain about the clock. Wiress is relieved someone understands her. Beetee wants his wire. Katniss and Johanna have a stand-off that Finnick has to diffuse. They go to the Cornucopia. Johanna gets axes.The Careers attack. Wiress dies. The island spins before they can give chase. Katniss swims out for Beetee's wire. They don't know where 12 is anymore. Finnick goes to tap a tree and Katniss hears Prim scream.

RIP: Wiress

-- This is the second time in as many Hunger Games that Katniss has to wrench a weapon from a dead tribute's hands.

-- It's REALLY lucky that Katniss can swim. Finnick had to go get Beetee, but the plan wouldn't work without Beetee AND the wire. Imagine if the wire was pulled into the hovercraft with Wiress' body and then everyone was like, "well shit."

There's something odd about Johanna not putting this together. Something that doesn't quite ring true. Suspicious.

Does anyone have a good read on this fight about the wire? Does Johanna really not know why Beetee wants it? Or is she trying to downplay the existence of the wire (for the cameras), and then gets annoyed when Katniss and Peeta think she's stupid?

Beetee and Wiress will probably find some way to die on their own. If we have to run from something, how far would they get? Johanna, frankly, I could easily kill if it came down to protecting Peeta. Or maybe even just to shut her up. What I really need is for someone to take out Finnick for me, since I don't think I can do it personally. Not after all he's done for dPeeta. I think about maneuvering him into some kind of encounter with the Careers. It's cold, I know. But what are my options? Now that we know about the clock, he probably won't die in the jungle, so someone's going to have to kill him in battle.

Again Katniss worries about her ability to kill Finnick. It's almost like she's going to have to make some choice related to this topic in the future. Because she doesn't want to think about killing Finnick, she then starts fantasizing about killing President Snow. And I think that's actually a very good bit of remembering who the "real enemy" is.

"[Wiress] can sense things before anyone else. Like a canary in one of your coal mines."

Another lady linked to a bird. Rue, Maysilee, Wiress.

I realize it's just another disadvantage the District 12 tributes have faced over the years. We don't go down in the mines until we're eighteen. It looks like most of the other tributes learn something about their trades early on. There are things you do in a mine that could come in handy in the Games. Wielding a pick. Blowing things up. Give you an edge. The way my hunting did. But we learn them too late.

Any thoughts on why District 12 doesn't have child labor? I know zero about mining coal but I would think kids could get into small places adults can't and we know the Capitol doesn't care if they die. (I don't know if this furthers my speculation that the Capitol really is just PRETENDING to need coal to give them busy work.)

I load an arrow as I twist and get a glimpse of a dripping-wet Gloss letting Wiress slide to the ground, her throat slit open in a bright red smile. The point of my arrow disappears into his right temple, and in the instant it takes to reload, Johanna has buried an ax blade in Cashmere's chest. Finnick knocks away a spear Brutus throws at Peeta and takes Enobaria's knife in his thigh.

I get that Wiress is in a vulnerable position--not part of the group. But why would you attack her first? There are four Careers and Six Alliance. They are already outnumbered. It would make more sense to take out the better fighters first. Maybe Gloss was hoping to do it silently? But I feel like this is another example of District 1 not being properly trained for combat. (I'm still upset about Marvel pulling the arrow out of his neck.)

I look at the others' sober faces. Now Finnick, Johanna, and Beetee have all lost their district partners. I cross to Peeta and wrap my arms around him, and for a while we all stay silent.

No thoughts just sadface.

"You had to tell us or we never would have moved our camp in the first place, brainless."

This is important to be because a) it's the beginning of Johanna and Katniss's term of endearment and b) Johanna is the only one who can comfort Katniss here. They are so similar.

Certainly he is brave, but we have all been brave enough to survive a Games. There is that quality of goodness that's hard to overlook, but still … and then I think of it, what Peeta can do so much better than the rest of us. He can use words. He obliterated the rest of the field at both interviews. And maybe it's because of that underlying goodness that he can move a crowd--no, a country--to his side with the turn of a simple sentence.

Everyone loves Peeta so much. He should be the new Supreme Leader. Maybe we should build a shrine to him?

She never once thinks it could have anything to do with her.

What one region's water level woes reveal about climate change and the St. Lawrence River

Strolling along the shore of his home on Ault Island, about 30 minutes west of Cornwall, Ont., Cliff Steinburg points to the end of his dock. He says this summer there was less than a foot of water there, making it impossible to launch a boat. While the river has since stabilized, Steinburg worries what next year will bring to a region known for its fishing, beaches, and boating.

"This area cannot suffer through another season like we did," Steinburg said. "It's going to have a major effect on tourism. It's going to have a major effect on all of us living here."

The St. Lawrence Seaway is an economic powerhouse; not only the lifeblood of local life and tourism in the many towns that overlook its shores, but a major trade artery relied on for commercial shipping between Montreal and Lake Ontario.

But the river is changing. Steinburg lives in a particular section of the river known as Lake St. Lawrence. The region was flooded in the late 1950s so that commercial ships could bring their cargo further upriver and inland.

Located directly upstream of the international Moses-Saunders Power Dam, Lake St. Lawrence's water levels drop when the dam opens, so that water can flow from Lake Ontario downstream to Montreal.

While the area has always been vulnerable to some water level fluctuations for that reason, Steinburg said that in his two decades living there he has never seen levels as low as they were in the summer of 2022.

According to public data from the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board, Lake St. Lawrence dropped below the lowest minimum ever recorded multiple times over the last few years, in May 2020, May 2021, and July, August, September and October 2022.

Those seesawing water levels may get more dangerous. Engineers and scientists are warning communities around the Great Lakes to prepare for a future with more extreme water level fluctuations.

A report published this year by Natural Resources Canada warns that "climate change may affect net water supplies" to the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River over the next few decades.

"We're likely to see higher highs and lower lows on both ends of the scale," said Frank Seglenieks, Canadian co-secretary of the Lake Ontario — St. Lawrence River Board, which regulates the flow of water through the Moses-Saunders Power Dam.

"We have about 100 years of water level data in the Great Lakes and over the past 10 years, some of the lakes have seen both their lowest levels and their highest levels just within the last 10 years," he said.

In a recent analysis, Seglenieks found that if the global average temperature increased by more than 2.5 C, the range between the average monthly minimum and maximum levels in Lake Ontario could grow by as much as a metre — from about two metres to about three meters. Those fluctuations would trickle down to the St. Lawrence River as well.

Jeff Ridal, a research scientist and the executive director of The River Institute in Cornwall, Ontario, said the Lake St. Lawrence region may be a "canary in the coal mine."

"This is the reality that we have to accept … in the end communities will have to adapt," Ridal said. Acceptance is a challenge to come by, especially among residents who are seeing beloved local ecosystems change.

Avid fisher John Sliter, who is the president of The Friends of Hoople Creek Society, is especially concerned about the walleye population. He said the area around Hoople Bay has been drying up. However, it's part of the annual spawning route taken by fish who swim from the St. Lawrence River upstream to Hoople Creek.

"When I was a young child growing up on Hoople Creek … there were thousands of fish that used to migrate up the creek to spawn," Sliter said. "When I walked back to the bay this past summer, it was nothing more than a field. As far as you could see it's dry land, and I found a few remnants of dead fish."

He fears many fish aren't making it up the creek to spawn before it dries out in the spring. As for those that do make it in time, Sliter said he has seen some of their eggs rotting in the sun.

"It's quite devastating," he said. Potential ecological impacts are being studied by The River Institute. Ridal said they are especially concerned about the fact that river levels are dropping earlier and earlier in the summer.

While so far research hasn't shown any significant differences in fish populations, Ridal said it may take time for the data to catch up with what is a relatively new phenomenon.

Steinburg and many other locals believe it's the responsibility of the board that manages the Moses-Saunders dam to adjust its operation to make water levels more consistent.

"I think it can be better managed, if you want my honest opinion," said Steinburg, who is a member of the public advisory group that suggests improvements to the dam's operation.

South Stormont Mayor Bryan McGillis agrees more needs to be done. He's concerned about the economic fallout in his community, not to mention the impact on home values.

"We don't need to be sacrifice lambs here," he said. "We really need our water where it is, because this is a tourist area and it's paramount that people still come to this community for our businesses."

The Moses-Saunders Power Dam management plan — and how it can be adapted to climate change — is currently under review. While there is hope that some adjustments can be made for a future with more extreme weather patterns, Seglenieks warned there are limits to what can be done.

"The water that comes into the system, that's determined by Mother Nature. All we can do is change the regulation plan a little bit to try to balance it," he said. That balancing act is a challenge. This is because releasing less water from the dam during a dry spell may keep water levels higher for residents upstream, but it has consequences downstream.

"It could reduce the water level at the Port of Montreal so low that container ships couldn't actually come in, and that would shut down the shipping industry, which is worth billions of dollars a day," he said.

Ridal agrees there is no easy answer. "We need a whole gamut of possible ways of dealing with these issues … hopefully improvements to water level management plans, but at the same time I think communities will have to take steps to better protect shorelines … and even adapt so they ensure that they can get their boats in the water."

Some of those adaptations are already underway. The St. Lawrence Parks Commission is investing millions in adapting local marinas and campgrounds to the upcoming reality.

Mike Pratt, park operations assistant manager with the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, said that by building breakwalls, dredging and building new boat ramps designed for more extreme water fluctuations, they hope to be better prepared for whatever the future holds.

"Nobody has a crystal ball, but we're doing our job and we're listening to the experts," he said. But residents like Sliter and Steinburg worry that if water fluctuations get more severe, their region will get the short end of the stick. This is because dam authorities try to balance the needs of towns upriver and downriver, along with the pressures of the shipping industry.

"We're the weakest link if you will, or the link that can be sacrificed," Sliter said. "We want to fight for the protection of our area and we want to fight for the protection of the fish and the wildlife."

Chats and Bags

Marinette and Adrien have been happily married since they left school and she finally feels ready to tell him the truth. She’s Ladybug and Guardian of the Paris Miraculouses. Unfortunately, maybe the cat should have stayed in the bag.

Marinette slumped back against the closed door with a tired, but satisfied groan. She toed off her heels and wriggled sore, sweaty, stockinged toes.

“Honey!” Marinette called into the apartment. The lights were on, casting her home with warm, soft light, and the tv hummed quietly from the loungeroom. She hung her coat on the hook by the door and stretched, padding into the kitchen. “Adrien, I’m home.”

“Princess!” Adrien hopped down from his perch on one of the kitchen’s bar stools and came bounding towards her, smiling brightly. He scooped her up into a hug and span them both around, giggling like a little girl. “How was work?” Adrien set her down with a kiss on the tip of her nose.

“Good, we finally got all the kinks worked out for the Winter bridal line but that’s not important right now. I’ve got something really important to talk to you about.” Marinette smiled and took Adrien’s hands in hers. “How about we talk over dinner?”

Adrien winced. “Oh. I already ate.” Ah. Marinette spied the emptied takeout containers sitting abandoned on the kitchen bench. One person’s serve. Adrien caught her and flashed a blinding smile. With the sparkle in his eye and Adrien’s perfect smile, Marinette couldn’t find it in herself to be annoyed despite the hunger gnawing at her belly. He bounced on his toes. “I can listen while you eat.” Marinette shook her head and smiled, ignoring the tightness of hunger in her belly.

“That’s okay, it can wait.” Marinette took a deep, steadying breath. “Just- just sit down, I need to go get something.” Adrien perched on a barstool, still smiling brightly. Marinette padded away down the hall to her workroom. Tikki floated out of her blazer pocket and smiled encouragingly when she was at eye-level.

“You can do this Marinette!” Tikki chirped. She flitted about, practically dancing in the air. “It’s Adrien! You two have been in love for years, telling him you’re Ladybug will just make your relationship stronger.”

Marinette steeled herself, confidence boosted. “You’re right Tikki. I can do this. I’m Marinette!” Marinette powered into her workroom and burrowed down to the bottom of her scrap fabric chest. She pulled out the wooden box at the bottom and Tikki phased into the lock and the box popped open on well-oiled springs. Inside, cushioned by stained scrap cloth, was the Miracle Box. It had changed as Marinette grew older and wiser in her role as Guardian, turning from the giant spotted egg, into a baby pink briefcase style sewing kit.

Marinette took one more deep breath to steady the shaking of her hands before reaching in, drawing out the case and standing in one movement.

“Okay.” She smiled nervously at Tikki. “Let’s do this.” Tikki gave Marinette one more bright smile before hiding away in Marinette’s blazer again. Tikki’s weight in a hidden inner pocket, nestled close against Marinette’s side, was soothing and familiar enough to spur Marinette on once more.

Marinette left the workroom behind her and with each step down the hall, towards Adrien, her dear, sweet, perfect Adrien, the box in her hands grew lighter. With every step Marinette took she got closer to finally, finally being able to share her burden. Closer to never having to keep another secret between them ever again. Marinette had everything else she’d ever wanted, and the only thing standing between Marinette and Adrien’s future (with three kids and a hamster) was one teensy, tiny, itty bitty little conversation.

“Phew!” Marinette said to break the quiet, too loud, and she winced when Adrien startled.

Adrien looked between Marinette and the case curiously, perfect golden brows furrowed in a mix of obvious confusion and curiosity. “Your sewing kit?” Marinette perched on a stool opposite Adrien, taking her time to straighten the kit on the island between them. She forced herself to meet Adrien’s eyes, suddenly trembling with nerves.

“Not just a sewing kit,” Marinette murmured. Just do it. Like ripping a band-aid off. She opened her blazer and Tikki floated out, giving Adrien a cheery little wave. “It’s the Miracle Box. I’m Ladybug, Adrien.” Tikki giggled and settled on Marinette’s shoulder.

For his part, Adrien seemed unphased. He smiled brightly with that little twinkle in his eye Marinette had always adored.

“Adrien?” Marinette gently pressed. She didn’t want to press him for a response but his silence was making her heart tremble. Adrien’s smile grew to a thousand-Watt beam and he seemed almost to vibrate in his seat.

“I’m so glad you finally told me,” Adrien chirped. He reached out and brought Marinette’s hand to his mouth, pressing a kiss to her knuckles and then another to her sparkling wedding ring. “Now we don’t need to keep secrets between us!” He pressed another kiss to her knuckles before grinning dashingly. “Plagg.”

“Plagg?” Marinette whispered. She felt cold and hot all at once. “So you’re-“

“Chat Noir, yes.” Adrien grinned in that smug, ‘cat that got the canary’ way Marinette had come to expect only from her partner. Seeing it on Adrien’s face made her stomach flip and decidedly not in the butterflies and curling toes and shivers down her spine way. “I’m so glad you finally told me M’Lady, it’s been agony not being able to call you My Lady every day.” Marinette’s blood froze.

“What did you say?” She whispered. Ice crept through her veins and closed her throat.

“I’ve wanted to call you My Lady for years, and now I finally can!” Adrien pressed yet another kiss to Marinette’s knuckles before ploughing on. “Well I’ve known for years M’Lady!” Adrien – Chat – Adrichat? practically purred. “Ever since I saw you leaving my room after gifting me my favourite beret.” He sighed dreamily, apparently totally ignorant of the ice in Marinette’s blood slowly creeping from her blood into her expression. “It was Fate, M’Lady, and look at us! Together forever because you finally saw that we were made for each other.”

That phrase was painfully, heartbreakingly familiar. “Adrien, I don’t understand. Are- what are you saying? Did you only marry me…because you knew I was Ladybug?” Marinette’s eyes burned with potential tears. “I thought you loved me.”

Adrien finally seemed to realise things weren’t completely fine and dandy because his expression fell into that kicked puppy look he was so good at. “Of course I love you Bugaboo! You’re the Ladybug to my Chat Noir, the yin to my yang, the creation to my destruction.” Marinette snatched her hand out of Adrien’s grasp and his expression crumpled like tissue paper.

Marinette stood, her stool scraping and Tikki dislodged from her shoulder. “My name is Marinette.” Her breath hitched and she snatched up the Miracle Box, clutching it to her chest. “You know I hate it when you call me Bugaboo. You know that.” She stumbled back when Adrien stood, still smiling that cat grin.

“There’s no need to play coy anymore, Princess,” Adrien purred. “We’ve been married since we were eighteen.” His stare grew hot, eyes darkening and he circled round the island. Marinette shifted towards the doorway. “You and I know each other intimately.” Adrien pressed closer still. “What are you so upset for? We’re happy together, aren’t we?”

“You lied to me!” Marinette shouted. Her outburst seemed to shock Adrien almost as much as it shocked Marinette herself. “Did you really only love me because you knew I was Ladybug? Would you have even considered dating me, marrying me, if you thought I was just plain old Marinette?”

“Well what was I supposed to do? You wouldn’t let me in as Chat, so when I knew for sure who you were behind the mask how was I supposed to resist?” Adrien demanded and if Marinette had any doubts he was Chat Noir they were thoroughly, utterly trashed on the floor. No one else could be so entitled, so, so pig-headed! That was the last straw. Marinette steeled herself.

“I’m going.” Adrien startled. “I…I need some – some time to myself. Don’t call me. I’ll-“ Marinette’s breath hitched and she forced herself to continue past the lump in her throat- “I’ll call you.” Marinette fled, barely remembering her coat and shoes as she bolted out the door.

“M’Lady!” Adrien called. “Princess!” His voiced cracked, clearly nearly in tears. Adrien’s heartbroken shouting cut off with the closing of the elevator doors. Marinette let out a sob, finally breaking in the relative comfort and safety of the elevator.

Tikki fluttered up to pat Marinette’s cheek sympathetically. “Oh Marinette. It’ll all be okay.” Marinette swiped roughly at her eyes, drawing away the tears that were starting to fall. Tikki gave her a soft, sad-eyed look. “You should call your parents, Marinette.”

“But it’s so late and they need to be awake early tomorrow to open the bakery and if I keep them up too late-“

“Marinette,” Tikki interrupted firmly. “Your parents love you, call them.” Marinette gave in, pulling out her phone just as the elevator doors opened. Tikki hid away in Marinette’s blazer. Marinette dialled her parents’ number, slipping her coat on one arm and her shoes back on as she listened to the dial tone.

“What if they don’t pick up?” Marinette worried. She didn’t have to.

“Marinette, honey?” Her maman answered. “Is everything okay, sweetie? You’re calling quite late.” Marinette sniffled.

“Maman can I- can I come stay tonight?” The doorman gave Marinette a nervous look as she passed and she realised she probably looked awful, with her tear-streaked makeup and her coat only half on. The thought only served to make Marinette feel worse and she gave a small wail that echoed in the empty street. A stray cat hissed and skittered out of her path.

“Oh sweetie, sh sh. Of course you’re welcome, Marinette. Do you want me to come pick you up?” Marinette wiped her nose on the back of her hand.

“No, that’s- that’s okay Maman.” Marinette sniffled again, listening to the click of her heels on the sidewalk as she collected herself. “I’ll be there soon,” Marinette assured her maman. She forced a wobbly smile even though Maman wouldn’t be able to see it. “I promise.” Marinette hung up and turned her face to the sky. The moon was washed out by the streetlights, and any light that may have made it past was smothered by city smog. Altogether a fittingly depressing picture.

In all of Marinette’s fussing, her planning, making contingency plans for her contingency plans, never had Marinette considered that Adrien already knew. Knew and never told her and and and- Marinette paused in the middle of the path and shrieked, stomping her feet and barely resisting the temptation to sit down in the grime of the sidewalk and cry like a little kid. It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair at all.

Virtual Reality Au

Ok so this is a superbat au bc fuck you I like it. Anyway, simply jotting down ideas. I was inspired A Game You Can’t Win by NightFoilage so go check it out.

So this au takes place in a no powers universe but set in thee future so more furutistic stuff like holograms, underwater cities, and the ability for same sex couples to produce children by combining DNA. Clark worked in Metropolis with Louis at the Daily Planet while Bruce operates as a funder of Gotham charities and Wayne Industries. Clark and Louis were previously married but then came to the decision that they were not what each other needed but still stayed friends. They were married for about 12 years. Bruce and Selina were engage but after an accident talked to one another and admitted that they were better off as friends. The bat kids call her aunt Selina.

Now, Clark and Bruce have been playing video games together for about 20 years, 5 years together and 15 with the other league members. They all have their own lives but are fairly tight knit. Now, they haven’t met up in real life or told each other their names because they all think of each other as civilians while they all work in dangerous fields.

Diana is an ambassador and princess for her island country which she rules with her mother and aunt.

Arthur (Jason Mamoa bc he is the only valid aquaman, he made aquaman COOL) is the heir for the throne to Atlantis working with his mother to rule and keep the peace.

Barry works as one of the countries top forensic scientists, having helped solve several high case murders and crimes.

Hal worked as a Air Force pilot before working with Green Lantern peace corps to maintain peace between nations.

John was a marine who joined the Green Lantern Corps and is often paired with Hal in game and irl.

Shayera was a double agent working to expose a terrorist group. She and John are married :3

J’oan works as a therapist for all lot of people, specifically higher profitable people (not anyone in the league).

Black Canary works as a bodyguard, is vibing with Oliver.

Ollie works in the same vain as Bruce but instead works as an investigator and aid to his city as well as a business partner to Bruce.

Clark is Louis partner editor and ex-Husband which puts a target on his back from everyone she’s exposed.

Bruce is Bruce minus Batman but in video game.

God I made this is much more complicated than it needed to be and like half of this is background stuff. Anyway carrying on!

So! The League has been playing games together for years, anything from Resident Evil to Minecraft to Among us. They are a fairly small group of content creators, mostly recording their games or doing charity streams. They trade off on editing so that its not on one person.

Then Dynamic Creation released. (yes is DC no im not being Lazy wdym)

Dynamic Creation is a virtual reality game based in a world with superheros and Villains. To take from NightFoilage’s story there are three classes players can take being civilians, heroes or villains. With realistic A.I. and amazing worlds to explore, it is one of the most looked forwarded to games that year.

So the league picks up the game, agreeing to go off on their own to explore and level up until they are at the level to make an alliance. They each have their own series of what they do as characters while still making join content about other games.

Now, the kicker?

Not a single one of the kids knows that their parent/guardian play video games or are League members. Which leads to interesting shenanigans when the kids make accounts trying to meet up with the league members.

Jason and Damian get into a fight about wether or not Batman would favor them, Dick trying to impress Batman, Tim donating money to earn his favor etc.

Bruce isn’t sure how to feel and mentions that they really seem to like Batman and they somehow got to taking about how Superman and Batman would be a cool couple. (Bruce is only barely not showing any emberessment on his face

The League was understandably laughing their asses off.

So we are focused on Bruce and Clark’s journey through DC and them trying to figure out if the other likes them back (Spoiler they’ve been crushing for a long while)

While all this is going on, there is a plot by Lex luthor to take over DC and use it for less than legal things and he uses henchmen (think ready player One where its a race to win the oasis but instead its Luthor trying to sabotage in game via sixers)

Now regarding Conner and Jon, Clark and Louis knew Lex Luthor, Clark knew him from smallvile while Louis knew him from her journalism. Lex had an obsession with the both of them and was constantly trying to be in their lives intimate (this is bc he’s a fucking creep literally nothing else). So when they got married he took their DNA (idk how just go with it) and made Conner. After Connor started to look alot like Clark he made Jon who looked like Louis. Neither Clark or Louis knew about this nor Conner and Jon so up until Conner was 15. His class took a genetics test for his science class and his results come back not as the son of Lex Luthor but as Clark and Louis.

Now young justice is a group as well as the titans with Jason and the outlaws a thing. Connor doesn’t know what to do, specifically since Lex isn’t exactly a good person, and he has Jon tested too just in-case he is Luthor’s bio-son. He isn’t so Connor went to his friends about what to do. He contacts Clark and asks to meet up for an interview while Tim does a background check on Clark.

They meet up, Connor drops the bombshell. Clark is surprised which Connor shows the DNA tests and his dono's files. Clark is also unsuprised at the fact that Luthor did this considering he and Louis have a restraining order against Luthor. Clark is conserned about Connor being raise by Luthor and then Connor mentions Jon which makes Clark even more worried so after they finish that up he asks Connor if he’s fine with Clark telling Louis. Connor agrees and Clark calls Louis who is currently working on the story of the Amazon-Atlantis- United Nations treaty.

They talk ad contact Connor and Jon again asking if they want to get too know them. So they do, Luthor finds out then tries to use the boys to get close to Clark. That goes horibble and Connor blackmails Luthor into letting them stay with Clark bc now he realizes that Luthor was a horrible person.

So the start of the fic is the first day of DC and the league growing while Clark and Bruce flutter around each other and about a yyear in deside to date, but no revealing their names admitting to each other that they are worried about their lives being dangorous.

Adventually everyone meets up at DynamicCon, which is held two years after the start of the fic. All the kids meet up and its the spiderman meme for the adults when it clicked in Barry’s head and he hugged Bruce.

Exestancal crisis for the kids though and the adults are enjoying it.

Florence Trevelyan Cacciola (née Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan) was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumblerand, on February 7th 1852. She was the daughter and only surviving child (her older sister Edith had died in 1850 at just one year old) of Edward Spencer Trevelyan of Hallington Hall (cadet son of Sir John Trevelyan, 5th Baronet Trevelyan of Nettlecombe, Somerset, and of Wallington Hall, Northumberland), and of Catherine Ann Forster.

She was baptised in St. Andrew Church in Hartburn, Northumberland, with her family name serving also as a middle name, so that she would have been able to keep it even after married.

On August 23rd 1854 Edward Spencer Trevelyan committed suicide, leaving his wife and his two years old daughter living alone in Hallington Hall.

Over the years, Florence and her mother developed a great interest in gardening and in establishing "pleasure gardens", such as gardens open to the public. Perhaps the fact that Florence's uncle, Sir Walter Carverley Trevelyan, 6th Baronet, was a renowned naturalist and geologist, might have provided some sort of influence.

In 1877 Catherine Forster died and her daughter inherited Hallington Hall. The year after the childless Sir Walter died too. Following the wishes of the late baronet, his inheritance was surprisingly split: his title was inherited by his nephew Alfred Wilson Trevelyan (son of Alfred Wilson Trevelyan senior), while Wallington Hall was left to his cousin Charles Edward Trevelyan. Despite being senior to her cousin Alfred (Florence's father was older than Alfred's one), and a closer relative than Charles Trevelyan, Florence, as a female, was passed over in the succession of the family titles and estates. In 1879, Miss Trevelyan, already mistress of herself, set off for a two years tour across Europe and North Africa, accompanied by her cousin, Louisa Harriet Spencer (daughter of Beatrice Trevelyan and Ernest Augustus, youngest child of Spencer Perceval, the only British prime minister to have been murdered). During a stop in Alassio, the two girls visited Parco Fuor del Vento and the villa Molino di Sopra as guests of General William Montagu Scott McMurdo, owner and designer of the park. Florence could thus admire the terraced hill, planted with olive, orange and palm trees and cypresses, and adorned with four pagoda style buildings. From there she could also see Gallinara island, shelter for herring gulls and protected plant species.

In 1881 Miss Trevelyan visited Taormina for the first time. The Sicilian city at that time was still recovering from the turmoil that had followed the Unification of Italy in 1861. Economical backwardness had also forced many to emigrate and so depopulate the territory. Taormina impressed very much Florence, because it reminded her of Alassio. In particular, she thought the islet of Santo Stefano (donated in 1806 by King Ferdinando I to the city) resembled a lot to Gallinara. Together with her cousin, she stayed in Taormina from January 28th to February 14th 1881. On August of the same year, the two girls were back in Northumberland. It's during this time that Florence became somehow close to Queen Victoria, to the point of being invited to Balmoral Castle (fun fact, in Taormina Florence is still popularly regarded a Queen Victoria's niece. Perhaps everything started after people saw a photo of Florence with her mother, Catherine Ann Trevelyan. Certainly the majority of people didn't actually know the actual appearance of Queen Victoria, so Mrs Trevelyan was easily mistaken with her illustrious sovereign, after all they were only 4 years apart) . In fact, despite the fact that the Trevelyan were mere landed aristocracy (and Florence, as the daughter of a cadet son, wasn't even entitled to be called lady), they were well-connected with the higher society. It was rumoured that at some point Florence had attracted the attention of the womanizer Prince of Wales, future Edward VII. Also, according to this version of the story, once Queen Victoria was made aware of this dalliance, she wasn't amused in the least. To ensure the end of it, she supposedly kindly offered Miss Trevelyan a generous annuity to keep her away from her son. Handsomely rewarded for her renunciation, Florence left Great Britain to never come back again. The main supporter of this rumour is Dino Papale, lawyer and journalist, distantly related to Florence's future husband. In his book Taormina Segreta - La Belle Epoque 1876-1914, published in 1995, he claimed Florence had been basically exiled from the court and high society because of a supposed fling with Prince Albert Edward.

Whatever the real reason was, Florence left once again the country with her cousin Louisa. In 1885, they were back in Taormina, lodging at Timeo Inn, adjacent the Greek Theatre and owned by La Floresta family. The two women had brought with them their five dogs, and to avoid inconveniencing the other guests with the animals' yapping, in 1889 Florence funded at her own expenses the building of an upper level. When one of her dogs, Sole, fell ill, Florence was desperate since she couldn't find in all Taormina a veterinarian to tend to the animal. Desperate and in tears, she asked her neighbour Salvatore Cacciola for help. Mr. Cacciola, who lived in a mansion also adjacent to the Greek Theatre (the then Palazzo Cacciola, now Palazzo Acrosso Papale), had been Professor of Anatomy and Histology at Padua University. He tended to the dog and managed to heal it, earning the woman's appreciation. Florence and Salvatore soon got closer, especially since Cacciola had studied in Malta and was thus fluent in English. He came from a wealthy family, in the future he would even be Taormina’s mayor for almost a decade, and being a Freemason leader (he would found the Rinascimento lodge), he shared with Florence an interest in esotericism. The two quickly fell in love and married on July 5th 1890.

Once settled in Palazzo Cacciola, Florence decided to expand the already vast garden by buying one plot of land after another, until the whole slopy countryside that linked the villa to the sea was annexed to the Cacciola's property. Apparently, this decision earned her in 1894 a reproach from English archaeologist Arthur Evans. While completing the 4th and last volume of The History of Sicily from the Earliest Times, which he had written together with his (by then deceased) father-in-law, Edward Augustus Freeman, Evans criticised Mrs Cacciola's mass purchasing as it would have prevented future archaeological digs in a place so near to the Greek Theatre, and with sure archaeological and historical relevancy. ("This, with others of the most interesting and beautiful sites of Taormina, has passed into the possession of an English proprietress, who has barred the access and warned off the civilized portion of mankind in four languages", p. 110-111) Previously, on June 1890, Florence had bought the former islet of Santo Stefano (which German baron and photographer Wilhelm von Gloeden baptized as Isola Bella, beautiful island, as it is globally known). There she had a house built, and rare and expensive exotic flora planted. These plants soon merged with the islet's local vegetation creating a unique natural environment, enriched by the presence of many (and sometimes rare) species of migratory birds, insects and reptiles, like the red-bellied lizard (Podarci Sicula Medemi) which only lives there.

In 1891, Florence gave birth to a stillborn son. She decided to leave her husband and moved away from Villa Cacciola, going on to live alone even further in the countryside, in a small cottage on mt. Venere. Nearby the house, she had a mausoleum built, and a roadside that connected mt. Venere to Taormina. She became particularly involved in the charity works, like establishing a fund that would have provided the daughters of fishermen with a dowry. Furthermore, she immersed herself in the creation of an English-style garden (or landscape garden) which she will name the Hallington Siculo, after her English childhood home. Like she had done with Isola Bella, Florence mixed exotic with native plants to create a peculiar habitat. In order to make the place even more special, she had the garden scattered with many small follies (Mrs Cacciola called them "beehives"). These picturesque buildings were made of local materials: bricks, wood, and various types of stones, and even capitals and other from the Greek-Roman period and XV-XVIth century decorative elements. The hives served as a bird observatory and places where she could relax while reading or having tea alone or with friends. Taking inspiration from her esoteric interests, she added a small megalithic construction (a cromlech) made of limestone, with the ulterior intention to re-use the advanced materials. As an animal lover, she also had some cages installed to house peacocks, parrots, canaries and pigeons. These renovations plus the amazing panorama seen from the garden (ranges from mt. Etna, the Ionian sea and the surrounding countryside), makes the Hallington Siculo a true heaven on earth.

Florence and her husband had become incredibly well-known in Sicily and abroad. In 1896 (and again in 1904 and 1906) they were visited by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia during his stays in Taormina, while in 1906 it was the time of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom (Florence's supposed former flirt) and his wife Queen Alexandra. Other personalities included Gabriele D’Annunzio, Edmondo De Amicis, Oscar Wilde (she would finance after he got released following the charges of omosexuality), Otto Geleng, D.H. Lawrence, Ignazio and Franca Florio, Joseph and Tina Withaker.

Following her son's death, she had developed diabetes. To cure her, her brother-in-law Carlo, the only pharmacist in Taormina, injected her with strychnine (at that time considered a cure for many illnesses). In September 1907 her conditions worsened, so that she had to go back to Villa Cacciola. There she died a couple of days later, on October 4th. Respecting her wishes, she was buried in the mausoleum on mt. Venere.

Dying childless, she had named as her heirs two of her father's cousins, Robert Calverley Trevelyan (her long-time penfriend and confidante) and his brother George Macaulay Trevelyan. Her husband obtained only the usufruct of Isola Bella, the Hallington Siculo, and the plots on mt. Venere, which after his death, would have gone to his wife's English relations. Florence's heirs had to follow strict rules, all devoted to the preservation of the flora and fauna which inhabited those places. And so, the peacocks, goats, doves, canaries, and so on, which had been a great company for her in those past years, had to live in health and comfort, tended with cure and love. As for the vegetation, nobody was allowed to work the land, cut any tree, or build houses. Salvatore soon remarried with his maid Ida Mosca, and adopted his young nephew Cesare Acrosso, who will later become a lawyer and the last fascist mayor of Taormina. Taking care of his first wife's properties soon became for Mr Cacciola a real hassle. In order to get free from this, in 1923 he asked for his nephew's aid and got in touch with his political enemy Giovanni Colonna, Duke of Cesarò (Acrosso was his secretary). In exchange for his political retirement, Cacciola obtained that the Hallington Siculo was expropriated for "public interest". The garden became then property of the town of Taormina, was dismembered, reduced to a quarter of its original size, and renamed "Parco Giovanni Colonna Duca di Cesarò". On February 19th 2019, thanks to a municipal decision, it changed again its name, becoming "Parco Florence Trevelyan", finally giving her original owner and curator the proper recognition.

As for Isola Bella, at Salvatore Cacciola's death in 1927, it was inherited by Cesare Acrosso (alongside with Cacciola's palace), who will sell it in 1954 to Leone and Emilio Bosurgi. The two businessmen brothers, disregarding Florence Trevelyan's will and wishes, built 12 individual homes, plus a small pool perfectly camouflaged between rocks and vegetation, to accommodate and entertain friends and clients. When their firm went bankrupt in the 80s, they were forced to auction off the islet. In 1990 Isola Bella was finally bought by the Sicilian Region, which transformed it into a wildlife reserve, reverting back to what Florence had intended.

Every year, on October 4th, a small ceremonial is held before a bust portraying Mrs Trevelyan in her dedicated park. It's a commemoration open to all of those wishes to remember and thank a woman who did so much for Taormina in her time, and left a lot to the future generations.
