You can always, always give something, even if it’s a simple act of kindness! If everyone were to give in this way and didn’t scrimp on kindly words, there would be much more love and justice in the world!

The line most often quoted from Frank's diary are her famous words, “I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” These words are “inspiring,” by which we mean that they flatter us. They make us feel forgiven for those lapses of our civilization that allow for piles of murdered girls – and if those words came from a murdered girl, well, then, we must be absolved, because they must be true. The gift of grace and absolution from a murdered Jew (exactly the gift that lies at the heart of Christianity) is what millions of people are so eager to find in Frank's hiding place, in her writings, in her “legacy.” It is far more gratifying to believe that an innocent dead girl has offered us grace than to recognize the obvious: Frank wrote about people being “truly good at heart” before meeting people who weren't. Three weeks after writing those words, she met people who weren't.

Tomioka Giyuu has only ever brought you flowers once.
He's not sure which were your favorite though, and knowing you, would you really mind? The shopkeeper took pity on his awkward, hunched figure and offered some advice. Giyuu picked out a few that reminded him of you as well. Rather overpriced, but it's the bare minimum.
The bouquet was bought on his way back from the Swordsmith Village. He hoped they won't wilt just yet. He accidentally beheaded one of the smaller ones gripping too hard. He's a trained Hashira, and his katana shouldn't weigh as much as it did now, but it did. Maybe it wasn't the blade, or the katana as a whole. Just the new addition.
Time had passed in a peculiar manner when he arrived. Days were short and fast and uncomprehending that everything was still moving on and he was just a rock in the middle of a rapid river. Nights were long, too cold out of bed and too warm buried under the covers. Nobody said anything to him; he avoided everyone as much as possible before getting there at last.
To find the real rock in the midst of the currents threatening to sweep him of (he's tempted to lie still and be swept away until who knows where he ends up. Dead, hopefully).
There's no what-ifs, tearful apologies, grieving regret, raging against the world. Just Giyuu and a grave and the stinging silence. He drops the bouquet and offhandedly wonders if you'd have liked them.
It's about the time when the leaves start to rain and the wind wants to play. Not an ideal place to sit and eat but there he was. The grave is dusty, even though it's not old. He blows it off and flicked off a few curious bugs.
You've never let him pay for a meal, not once, not ever, no more. You mastered salmon daikon just for him - Giyuu offered a half-hearted "sorry" he didn't cook your favorite meal. No time, too many missions, he recites the excuses he's made up on the way, then decided to be truthful because hey, you're already dead, everyone he knows is dead. If he cooked it he'd have cooked extra and sat at a table too big for him and ate alone. Cheers, Giyuu glumly toasts, to the first meal I've paid for, for you.
What was the point of even coming here? He'd been told there hadn't been enough of you to bury and the sun had gotten its revenge before he could. Not even a haori to sew together. Just the broken edges of your katana and its guard, now his.
He doesn't dream of you. There's no if only I-was-there, I-had-said-something. You were just another casualty in the cruelty of the world. Giyuu moves on and eats salmon daikon alone and debates gifting more flowers but his feet never want to take him there ever again. He can't patch up the holes in his haori as well as you do and gives up.
Instead he sees you everywhere. In the corner of a darkened room, trying to make him laugh. A head of familiar hair in the crowds. A new slayer. Near death moments. Every demon eating a victim. Behind him. Next to him. In front of him.
Please stop haunting me.

Dead people receive more flowers than the living ones because regret is stronger than gratitude.
