Lateral peroneal tendonitis: ankle pain
What is lateral peroneal tendonitis?
The lateral peroneal muscles are two muscles located on the outside of the leg. They play an essential role in stabilising the ankle and raising the outer edge of the foot. When these muscles are subjected to repeated stress, their tendons can become inflamed, leading to tendonitis.
What causes tendonitis?
The main causes of lateral peroneal tendonitis are :
- Repetitive strain injuries: These injuries often occur in sports that put repetitive strain on the ankle (running, tennis, basketball).
- Muscular overload: A sudden increase in the intensity or duration of training can encourage the onset of tendonitis.
- Misalignment: A flat foot or varus (ankle turned inwards) can increase tension on the peroneal tendons.
- Wearing unsuitable footwear: Shoes that are too tight or have poor cushioning can aggravate the situation.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of lateral peroneal tendonitis are as follows:
- Local pain on the outside of the ankle, which worsens with physical activity.
- Localised swelling.
- A cracking or rubbing sensation in the ankle.
- Weakness of the ankle, which can lead to repeated sprains.
How is it diagnosed?
The diagnosis is generally made by a doctor during a clinical examination. He or she may carry out specific tests to highlight the pain and limitation of movement. Additional tests such as ultrasound or MRI may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other pathologies.
What treatments are available?
Treatment for lateral peroneal tendonitis aims to reduce inflammation, relieve pain and allow a gradual return to physical activity. It may include :
- Rest: It is important to rest the foot to promote healing.
- Ice: Applying ice several times a day can reduce inflammation and pain.
- Anti-inflammatory medication: NSAIDs can help relieve pain and inflammation.
- Physiotherapy: A personalised rehabilitation programme can strengthen muscles and improve ankle mobility.
- Shock waves: This technique can be used to promote tendon healing.
- Injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP): This technique can speed up healing.
- Ankle brace: To relieve the area and promote healing.
How can I prevent lateral peroneal tendonitis?
- A good warm-up before each physical activity.
- Balanced muscle strengthening of the ankle and foot.
- Wear suitable footwear and replace insoles regularly.
- Progressively increasing the intensity of training.
- Listen to your body and adapt your activity if you feel pain.

The pain can range from mild discomfort to severe, impacting your ability to walk, stand, or engage in physical activities. Sometimes, if it is plantar fasciitis, people feel pain in the heel when they wake up in the morning or after a period of sitting. If left untreated, ankle pain can lead to further complications and hinder your daily routine.

The goal is to relieve pain, improve mobility, and enhance your overall quality of life.
Treatment options may include:
Physical Therapy: Targeted exercises and stretches to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and enhance joint stability.
Medications: Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs to manage pain and reduce inflammation.
Orthotic Devices: Custom-made shoe inserts or braces to provide support and alleviate pressure on the affected areas.
Injections: Corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and pain in the affected ankle joint, or around plantar fascia.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: Utilizing your body's natural healing properties to promote tissue repair and reduce pain.
Nerve Interventions: On occasions, long-standing diabetes can cause neuropathy of foot where people experience burning, tingling type pain. Nerve blocks and releasing the entrapment under ultrasound guidance helps in relieving the neuropathic foot pain.

Shoulder Impingement
One of the most common physical complaints is shoulder pain and impingement is one of the most important cause. Your shoulder is made up of several joints combined with tendons and muscles that allow a great range of motion in your arm. Because so many different structures make up the shoulder, it is vulnerable to many different problems. The rotator cuff is a frequent source of pain in the shoulder. Your shoulder is made up of three bones: your upper arm bone (humerus), your shoulder blade (scapula), and your collarbone (clavicle). Your arm is kept in your shoulder socket by your rotator cuff. These muscles and tendons form a covering around the head of your upper arm bone and attach it to your shoulder blade. There is a lubricating sac called a bursa between the rotator cuff and the bone on top of your shoulder (acromion). The bursa allows the rotator cuff tendons to glide freely when you move your arm. Description Impingement is a condition where in the rotator cuff or bursa or both rub (impinge) underneath the acromion. It is a common source of pain in the shoulder. Three common reasons for impingement include: Tendinitis: Tendinitis is the wear and tear of rotator cuff tendons. Due to wear the tendons become soft and swollen. A swollen tendon can easily get impinged. Bursitis. The bursa can become inflamed and swell with more fluid causing pain Spur: A spur is a small beak like downward projection from the bone (acromion), it can sometimes be a cause of impingement.

Stiff ankles: causes, symptoms and treatments
Ankle stiffness is a common problem that can limit mobility and cause discomfort. It can have a variety of causes and requires appropriate treatment.
What causes ankle stiffness?
- Osteoarthritis of the ankle: Wear and tear of the articular cartilage leads to progressive stiffness and pain.
- Repeated sprains: Poorly treated or frequent sprains can lead to scar tissue formation that limits mobility.
- Poorly healed fractures: Poorly healed fractures can lead to joint stiffness.
- Tendonitis: Inflammation of the ankle tendons can cause stiffness and pain.
- Arthrodesis: Surgery to immobilise a joint (arthrodesis) can lead to deliberate stiffness of the ankle.
- Other conditions: Certain inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, or neurological diseases can also lead to ankle stiffness.
What are the associated symptoms?
In addition to stiffness, other symptoms may be associated with ankle stiffness:
- Pain: Pain may be mild or intense, and may occur at rest or during movement.
- Swelling: Swelling of the ankle may be present.
- Redness: The skin around the ankle may be red and warm if inflamed.
- Difficulty walking: Stiffness can make walking difficult and painful.
How is ankle stiffness treated?
Treatment for ankle stiffness depends on the underlying cause. It may include :
- Medication: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help reduce pain and inflammation.
- Physiotherapy: Specific exercises can improve mobility and muscle strength in the ankle.
- Orthoses: Wearing a splint or ankle brace can help immobilise the joint and reduce pain.
- Injections: Corticosteroid injections can reduce inflammation.
- Surgery: In the most serious cases, surgery may be required to remove scar tissue or replace the joint.
When should you consult a healthcare professional?
If you suffer from ankle stiffness, it is important to consult a doctor or chiropodist. He or she will be able to make a precise diagnosis and suggest a suitable treatment.

Old video that I recently dug up. This was from 5 1/2 years ago on Memorial Day weekend 2018 when I twisted my ankle really bad on the street and ended up with a sprain and hairline crack. I had been wearing a boot and crutches but then it got super swollen up and I took the boot off and wrapped it up. IT HURT!
