Stiff ankles: causes, symptoms and treatments
Ankle stiffness is a common problem that can limit mobility and cause discomfort. It can have a variety of causes and requires appropriate treatment.
Tumblr media
What causes ankle stiffness?
- Osteoarthritis of the ankle: Wear and tear of the articular cartilage leads to progressive stiffness and pain.
- Repeated sprains: Poorly treated or frequent sprains can lead to scar tissue formation that limits mobility.
- Poorly healed fractures: Poorly healed fractures can lead to joint stiffness.
- Tendonitis: Inflammation of the ankle tendons can cause stiffness and pain.
- Arthrodesis: Surgery to immobilise a joint (arthrodesis) can lead to deliberate stiffness of the ankle.
- Other conditions: Certain inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, or neurological diseases can also lead to ankle stiffness.
What are the associated symptoms?
In addition to stiffness, other symptoms may be associated with ankle stiffness:
- Pain: Pain may be mild or intense, and may occur at rest or during movement.
- Swelling: Swelling of the ankle may be present.
- Redness: The skin around the ankle may be red and warm if inflamed.
- Difficulty walking: Stiffness can make walking difficult and painful.
How is ankle stiffness treated?
Treatment for ankle stiffness depends on the underlying cause. It may include :
- Medication: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help reduce pain and inflammation.
- Physiotherapy: Specific exercises can improve mobility and muscle strength in the ankle.
- Orthoses: Wearing a splint or ankle brace can help immobilise the joint and reduce pain.
- Injections: Corticosteroid injections can reduce inflammation.
- Surgery: In the most serious cases, surgery may be required to remove scar tissue or replace the joint.
When should you consult a healthcare professional?
If you suffer from ankle stiffness, it is important to consult a doctor or chiropodist. He or she will be able to make a precise diagnosis and suggest a suitable treatment.

Both of these ankle braces, or supports or what ever you wanna call them, suck! Any one have and suggestions for a more comfortable, better fitting ankle brace? I can barely lace up my boots with the bigger one on. And the small one makes my foot hurt cuz of the pressure on my arch? #ankleproblems #rollingjoints #rolledankles #anklebrace https://www.instagram.com/p/CBinolwDyiX/?igshid=14ka6t0qq0b0p

Contact Dr. Debnath for your 𝐀𝐧𝐤𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐬.
The ankle joint has small internal dimensions under normal circumstances. To produce sufficient space in which to perform the ankle arthroscopy procedure and avoid damaging the joint surfaces with instruments, it is necessary to “stretch open” the joint.

The “foot core” I live this idea. #Repost @drcourtconley (@get_repost) ・・・ Foot core....now that's 🔥. What a great concept really. This article talks about extending the 'core' into the foot. I love this. What is the core really? We can't say it simply exists around the lumbo pelvic hip complex. I like to think of it more globally. The 'core' we all seem to talk about consists of local stabilizers and global movers. The local stabilizers of the lumbo pelvic hip complex, ie the multifidi and transverse abdominis have small cross sectional areas and small movement arms = they increase intersegmental stability but do not produce large rotational movements. Without proper function of these guys, the global or primary movers ie. Latissimus dorsi can not function appropriately to cause gross movement. Problem. Now extending to the foot, the local stabilizers (4 layers of muscles that originate and insert in the foot) are responsible for controlling the degree and velocity of arch deformation. Without proper function of these guys, the global movers of the foot...the ones that start in the lower leg, cross the ankle and insert in the foot...ahem..posterior tibialis for example. ❤️ can not function appropriately thus causing many foot related problems. Plantar fasciitis, posterior tibialis tendinitis, medial tibial stress syndrome, etc etc. Point: foot strengthening protocols must be implemented in our treatment protocols to improve the 'core' of the foot and prevent foot and lower leg pain and syndromes. 👣👣👣👣👣👣. The foot core system is a combo of the neural, passive and active subsystem to produce foot core stability and flexibility. This picture of the functional half dome proposed by McKenzie shows the passive subsystem of the foot. Really great article. This stuff got me excited. #gaithappens #footcore #footstrength #stabilizers #movers #footdome #move #movement #plantarfasciitis #posteriortibialtendonitis #medialtibialstresssyndrome #ankleproblems #foot #footwear #rocktape #running #triathlon (at L.A. Good morning darlings!! Let's make sure it's not a lazy Sunday & make it a Funday Sunday :3. I was brave enough to do some dance covers at the gym today lol. I figured out after 2 songs that I really should just choose songs I can dance for the sheer joy of it otherwise I'm just doing this face >:|the whole time because I'm trying to concentrate lol #idolsmakepeepssmile so in that regard I think the best cover I did today was probably KiRa KiRa Sensation by Muse lol. I would share it but however there were 2 guys who walked around and I'm not sure if I would be overstepping my bounds sharing it. I think it should be fine if I just blurred their faces doe :3. Let me know if y'all wanna see it. My right knee and opposite ankle are giving me problems today so I tried not to lift TOO heavy. I've got my magic bag on my right meow. But #dontletsetbacksholdyouback :D. I #cantstopwontstop but I WILL let my body rest & recover for #gains to grow. Have a great day & let's get ready for Monday :D. #brainsbeautybooty #passionpersistenceperspective #ladieswholift #gainsdontcomecheap #sweat4gains #foamrolling #gluttonforpunishment #ankleproblems #kirakirasensation #muse #idolmusic #dancecover #addictedtolifting #addictedtodancing #slinebooty #fitspiration #fitspo #lovelive #igdaily #followme #pink #aidoll

Foot and Ankle Surgery
Our feet are comprised of 26 bones and in excess of 33 joints organized in sections and curves that vary in stiffness and flexibility. Many common problems can occur in this complex structure.
Most people with problems in their feet or ankles won’t need surgery.
