I finally finished watching Trigun (1998).

Why has it taken 5 years?

Because I really really really had a hard time getting into it. I absorbed the majority of this anime through bite sized increments every few months with the odd extra good episode taken in in one sitting. But I did it so let's dive in!

I recall being interested in the differences between the manga (which I read before starting the watch) and the anime when I started. I think for example that the anime chose to keep the stuff about the plants a mystery that's slowly revealed but the manga was straight up with all the exposition was an interesting choice that really paid off in the anime form. There were other major differences I was struck by but somewhere inbetween the 6th episode and the pandemic I completely lost interest in doing that and now I don't recall the manga that much at all haha.

Despite the slog I actually do love Trigun!

It's got great characters; an amazing setting, space tech combined with western towns, saloons and a dessert planet! An interesting plot, compelling themes, a fun soundtrack.

But the pacing! Is! So bad! And I'm someone who enjoyed Cowboy Bebop and Stein's gate I enjoy slow paced stories! This anime... I could spend 20-30 seconds just listening to characters huffing and panting for breath with no other action. That was probably to get the tension of a high stakes western stand off but in practice I found it very cringe and difficult to focus/keep my attention on, because of how things dragged and how predictable some of the plot was.

I read somewhere that Trigun '98 is 65% filler and that's why it's brilliant and to an extent I can get that, it really does give you time to get to know and enjoy your time with all the characters in a way modern shounen just don't bother with.

By the end of the show you care about them and danger to them actually feels nerve-wracking or upsetting. And you get to know the world of Gunsmoke too, the characters who are just trying to get by and live their lives, the ones that Vash cares about enough to risk life and limb to protect.

It's one of the last fully cell animated anime series, (I think the last was the original fullmetal alchemist anime) which means that when it stops re-using frames and really gets to work it's a visual spectacle wordy of a jawdrop.

Did I enjoy this anime? Yes absolutely. Do I love Vash, wolfwood and the rest? How could I not! Did I find the critique of pacifist morality compelling and nuanced? Between the way it shows such painful consequences for his pacifist choices and the importance of choosing pacifism anyway, there's no way I wouldn't.

But the pacing. Yikes. After episode 5 I started to stall hard between episodes.

But episode 5, fantastic as it is with its breakdown of Vash's true character, isn't the be all end all of Trigun. His mysterious backstory which is deeply tied to how humanity ended up on Planet Gunsmoke in the first place, his relationships with Meryl the hardworking and stubborn young insurance worker who is the audience viewpoint of Vash before she later becomes Vash's anchor for viewing himself and his beliefs and with Wolfwood the mercenary priest a perfect foil to Vash with his willingness to kill the bad guys and the main antagonist of the story Nai (or Knives) are all so much fun and it would've been a shame to miss out on any of it.

Vash is simultaneously the strongest & silliest goofball around and an emotionally fragile crybaby who's just trying to figure out a way he can live in this world without sacrificing the morals he clings to. It's easy to say morality doesn't feed anyone in a world that's starving for food and water as much as kindness and therefore doesn't matter but Trigun makes it clear that they do matter and it's much more impressive and it's much harder to actually commit to keeping them than it is to dismiss them. Vash is simultaneously a complex and very simple character and he's definitely a worthy mc.

What's not to love.

It's weird to have it over because this anime's been part of my life for so long, finally succeeding in... watching a show shouldn't feel this impactful but I do feel weirdly proud about not giving up despite the major executive dysfunction I had regarding it!

I wanted to watch it a lot of the time but couldn't make myself and in the time since I started it a movie and a reboot have come out.

In a sense Vash articulates the conflict of Batman over his no kill rule and all such characters.

Yes people can be terrible and cruel, prejudiced and downright selfish to the point where they're a threat to all human life. But no one has the right to take the life of another person, no matter what they've done, we have to try and survive together, with humanity, for the sake of love and peace. It's a defence of sincerity in the face of cynicism and hardship and promotes a powerful message of pacifism, with a philosophy that the world has since kind of passed by or moved on from.

The anime is 26 years old and some parts of it haven't aged well but I'm glad I got the experience of watching it.

Anime Watchlist 3 part 2

You don’t watch Ghost in The Shell: Innocence for the plot, no you watch it for The Vibe™, The Aesthetic, the Distinct MOOD and emotional Flavour the thing brings out of you.

And

For the ANIMATION !

This movie is a gorgeous mix of traditional and digital techniques, some of it doesn’t work too well but that’s because it’s thoroughly experimental, and because of that courage to try new things we get this unique distinctive style unlike anything else I’ve seen, also the soundtrack fits it like a glove so there’s that.

The plot isn’t bad per sé it offers its own interesting points and takes off of one of Masamune Shirow’s original manga arcs, a brand of gynoids aka sex bots are killing their owners and Section 9 brought into investigate where it differs from the manga is Motoko’s absence – which is really its own character in the movie, and Batou’s aggressive grief for the loss of a friend channeling all of his actions. 

Batou and Togusa find links between the company who makes the gynoids and the Yakuza what the link is they’re not sure yet, Batou finds a picture of a girl at the house of a victim, Batou and Togusa attack the Yakuza and later Batou gets hacked in an attempt to ward off Section 9 involvement with a scandal, they then travel to another city go past a gorgeous festival which is like PEAK EYEGASM art and try to get into this guy call Locus Solus’s house and find evidence linking him to the crime. Later it turns out the reason the gynoids were so lifelike was that they were using real girl’s minds to give them personality.

Buuut it’s at this point that it gets sucked into its own message, Batou gives out to the child trapped in the factory for dubbing malicious ghosts and getting not only innocent humans killed but also hurting the poor dolls they were uploaded into. Which…  Taking into account this kid has been kidnapped and then brainwashed for at least a year and is scared of being permanently brainwashed like her kid Motoko saying ‘the doll didn’t want to become a human’ in response to the kid’s ‘but I didn’t want to become a doll’ was wayyyy out of step with like basic logic. In the manga it’s only the cost of innocent human lives that was emphasised at the end of this story but here the focus is much more on is a doll a human if you fill it with a personality and philosophical questions like that and are we taking advantage of these machines if we don’t treat them ethically. Still by all means beat up Locus Solus but maybe don’t bully the victim for trying to let people know something wasn’t right with the company that was imprisoning them in the only way they could?? That’s just my take though, I realise that maybe the focus should be more on the concepts it’s introduced rather than the plot that acts as a vehicle for them but still that was so out of sync with basic compassion it kind of broke me out of the story a little and I felt like Mamoru Oshii was saying it through Batou and Motoko’s voices rather than him conveying their character’s actual responses.

So after that they sail the factory which by the way is a huge boat/rig to the nearest country where they can arrest everyone involved and then they wrap up the case. 

Lots of interesting ideas in this film as well as great character moments, we see Batou who didn’t used to understand why Motoko felt she had to go explaining to Togusa that Motoko’s body and even most of her memory and mind belonged to the government and not her, it’s a matter of not only identity but also self determination and freedom that keeps her riding the net rather than facing the physical world alongside them. It was also interesting how the character’s kept using quotes to try and reason their own feelings out to each other, as if to say “I am not the only who has felt this way” even when confronted with the fantastical and surreal side effects of their jobs.

We’re left with questions about the human experience and what defines being human in the end anyway as well as a look at the benefits as well as the crimes future technologies might enable us to deal with.

This film wasn’t as solid as the original Ghost in The Shell (1995) movie as it had its flaws but it was definitely an interesting follow up and I was happy to see the directions the characters took as well as the ART.

I was a teenager when Blade Trinity came out. And my attention span never looked into the 2 other movies that came before it. I have a lot to catch up on. Worth Noting that the first Blade movie is older than the first X-Men film. I don’t think Fox were ever involved in those forgotten Captain America and Fantastic Four films of the 90’s.

“Baby,” Max says, “Come on.”

It doesn’t change anything. Charles stays lying on his front, his face buried in his pillow.

He looks so small like this. So tiny. It makes Max want to protect him, to kiss his forehead and hold him close and keep him there for as long as they live.

“Charlie,” Max whispers, fingers reaching out to comb through Charles’ soft, brown locks, “Talk to me please.” 

Charles replies, but the words reach Max all garbled, the sound swallowed up by the intruding pillow.

But still. It’s progress.

Max lies down on his side next to Charles, throwing an arm over his waist. He kisses Charles’ cheek. Once, twice. Three more times.

And finally, like the sun breaking through grey clouds, Charles’ head turns towards him. Just a little bit. Only a single beautiful green eye looking at Max. 

“Hi,” Max smiles, his hand caressing Charles’ cheek, “It’s nice to see your lovely face.”

And despite everything, Charles smiles. It makes Max feel like he’s won a goddamn trophy. 

“Do we not want to talk about what’s wrong?” 

Charles shakes his head.

Max hums.

It’s not ideal. Charles is the kind of person who always feels better once he talks his emotions out. But if he doesn’t want to, Max will not force him. 

“Is there something else we can do, that I can do which would help?”

Charles’ bottom lip sticks out, a cute little pout that makes Max’s chest ache.

“I don’t know,” Charles whispers, his voice rough and heavy, “I don’t know what to do, what will help.”

Max nods, running through his mental directory of things and activities that he knows Charles enjoys.

“I think,” Charles begins, biting his lip.

“Yes?” Max urges, running his fingers down the length of Charles’ spine, smiling gently at the shiver that follows.

“I think I just want to be sad for a bit,” Charles says, his eyes so careful, so observant, undoubtedly evaluating all of Max’s expressions, “I just want to be sad and watch some tv and that’s all.” 

Max doesn’t know what to think. Or say. 

It’s not something Charles has done before, as far as Max is aware of. Charles either talks about it or works out about it or writes some music about it. He’s never just… been with it. That’s more of Max’s thing.

“Is that okay?” Charles asks cautiously.

“Of course it’s okay, schatje,” Max says, moving closer to kiss Charles’ nose, “Of course.” 

The corners of Charles’ mouth turn up a little, making the corners of Max’s mouth turn up a whole lot. 

“Do you want to be alone? I could give you some space, go sim race for a while or play with the cats.”

Charles frowns, shaking his head, “No. Stay.” 

“Okay,” Max smiles, “Do you have something particular you want to watch?” 

“No, not really. I just don’t want to think.”

“Okay,” Max nods, “Okay. Come on then, come here”

Max sits up, leaning against the headboard, holding his arms open.

Charles is quick to move, settling into Max’s side, breathing a sigh of relief.

“I’m going to pick the third movie that’s on our watchlist, okay?” Max asks, feeling Charles nod against him, his hair tickling the inside of Max’s arm.

Max doesn’t think he’s even heard of the movie. It’s animated and about a goose and a fish and why the hell is this on their watchlist.

Doesn’t matter. He picks it anyway.

It’s quiet as they watch the film. Something Max is not used to. 

Charles is a chronic talker. Even during movies. Seriously. The man has an opinion about each scene and he will make it known. 

He is really fucking lucky that Max doesn’t care much about films and would rather be listening to Charles’ voice anyways.

Yeah, it’s odd, feeling Charles next to him, matching his own breathing to his and not knowing any of the things going on in his head.

But it’s okay. It’s what Charles needs. And that’s all that matters.

Charles snorts suddenly, scaring the shit out of Max, “I don’t get it. How can a goose and a fish be friends? Like how can a goose hear what the fish is saying underwater?”

Max has to force down a cackle to be able to reply. It makes his voice sound all strange and high-pitched.

“That’s the part you decide to question and not the fact that they of course can talk?”

Charles rolls his eyes, giving Max’s arm a hard smack, “You know what I mean, you asshole.”

Max doesn’t. He really, really doesn’t. 

But Charles has already moved onto sharing his next thought and he sounds lighter and he’s moving his hands around as he talks and so when he asks Max if he thinks it’s stupid that the main character goose has a ‘cooler haircut’ than the other geese, all Max does is nod and say, “So fucking stupid, schatje. It’s so stupid.”

Platonic! Lemon + Tangerine Headcanons (GN!)

aka the babygirlification of two assassins (i literally birthed them it’s true)

You come across the twins as a civilian - in this case you work at a coffee shop. When they walk up to the counter you’re a little shocked, not because of anything they’ve done but the fact that one of them is bleeding. 

“Woah, are you alright?” You say, gesturing to the dark-skinned man’s shirt.

“What? Oh, I’m fine. I don’t bleed.”

It’s in your better judgment not to question it. The man next to him - classically dressed and spouting a moustache - sighs before smiling at you and ordering: one black coffee, and a hot chocolate with a chocolate chip cookie to be precise.

From behind the counter you can hear the moustached man mention something about his friend ‘eating all that sugar’, whilst he brushes it off, going on about ‘rewards’ before somehow talking about Thomas the Tank Engine?

The man isn’t even halfway done with his drink when you can see his eyes brighten, snapping his fingers with every sip.

“Ah, mate…You’ve gotta try this, init? That barista makes it proper - good layer of milk and cream, the right temperature for sipping…None of that hot water shit they used to give us in school!”

You smile to yourself, and once he’s done he comes up and thanks you personally, leaving a generous tip :)

The rest is history:

Lemon is the type of guy to come back to something when he enjoys it. When the Twins are in town, he’s definitely coming to your store, and you’re the only one who can make his hot chocolate. No exceptions.

From there you actually learn their names - Lemon and Tangerine. Tan is cordial enough, but you definitely click with Lemon the most

They ask you about your day, if you’ve been busy, all of that. It’s nice to have a familiar face in their line of work

Sometimes they stay until closing time, and if you’re shutting up they ALWAYS walk you home

Thomas the Tank Engine initiation rituals…The engine Lemon decides to give you is forever stuck onto your uniform as a badge of honour

Making fun of Tangerine for being grumpy and only liking black coffee… He orders a muffin just to shut you all up

“Would you two grow up, would ya? Can’t beat a classic Victoria sponge anyway.”

The one time you offer them to have a meal at your house it’s the sweetest thing ever: takeout or home cooked, they lap it up whilst they tell you crazy stories about their travels

They would LOVE home baked/cooked goods in particular though, it makes them feel 'normal' and like a family

They'll always bring you gifts from the different places they’ve been!! Ex. A Momomon from Japan or a snowglobe from Switzerland

I feel like Tan gets comically angry if he opens your fridge and sees that you only have oat/almond milk…He can’t get over the fact that it’s a ‘fucking NUT, it’s not proper milk’

Lemon using you as a parent, telling on Tangerine for everything- "I'm telling them that you stole from that vendor. You said you were trying to kick that habit, mate."

You figuring out that ‘outside contractors’ means something shady, but you don’t care bc they’re your friends

Tangerine is better with pets than Lemon, who isn’t really fond of them. Your animal will either love Tan or hate him, and there’s no in between

Being worried when they disappear for long periods of time :(

They're not the best at comfort (Tangerine in particular) but they try. Lemon suggests a relevant Thomas episode to help you get through it

Your watchlist is filled with animated/children's films

If there’s a stray/abused animal they find on a mission, they’re bringing it back to you. Surprise, you have a pet!

Them having your back. Tangerine is definitely beating up someone for you, and they’ll give you a bit of cash if you’re ever running behind on rent.

Them having a tiny photo of you in their jacket/wallet to look at and remember the good times missions <3

my yuriful summer 2024 watchlist 🏖️☀️

now that i checked out the first episode of all the yuriful shows i was keeping an eye on, here’s my first thoughts and impressions

Mayonaka Punch

thoughts on episode 1: LOVED IT SO SO MUCH!!! i love the mc already she’s such a mess and i already love the dynamic between her and the raging vampire lesbian. my favorite from the ones on this list tbh!! need more cancelled youtubers and horny for blood lesbian vampires. also i have a weak spot for anime with adult characters who can drink alcohol and get wasted lol. WILL be watching EAGERLY.

yuri thoughts 🌸: the yuri looks solid!! there was verbal mention of lesbian romantic feelings. and as in most vampire shows, blood drinking is metaphor for sex but it’s made quite explicit in this one which increases the yuri score. the protagonists have already a v interesting dynamic im invested.

(EDIT) POST EP 3 THOUGHTS: i love this one more and more!!! still my fave out of these 5 for some reason? i just like masaki and live’s dynamic a lot, i hope they kiss

thoughts on episode 1: “shiiiika 🦌!!!” okay y’all know i love me some gag humor anime but tbqh im feeling kinda lukewarm on this one. maybe it’s bc i had rly high expectations for this but idk most of the gags did not hit as nice as i hoped. tho some of them were brilliant (also looove the constant breaking of the fourth wall). not looking forward to the siscon character that’s gonna be introduced. will be continuing but might drop if i get bored. however i loved how they Did mention that only male deer have horns sooo… noko transbian 🦌🏳️‍⚧️?

yuri thoughts 🌸: the two protagonists have great yuri potential!! torako has already shown she’s a huge girl kisser and noko just keeps teasing her, which is a great dynamic imo. also torako’s va is hatsune miku’s voice provider, and we all know hatsune miku is transbian goddess so!

(EDIT) POST EP 3 THOUGHTS: okay nvm i actually love this!!!!!! and the siscon character is such a caricature and parody of the siscon trope that i love her too (also she’s voiced by mafuyu project sekai uwu).

VTuber Nandaga Haishin Kiri Wasuretara Densetsu ni Natteta

thoughts on episode 1: once again maybe unpopular opinion but im not completely sold on this one. yes it’s fun, yes she’s unhinged, yes they’re all absolutely raging homosexuals BUT idk how to explain it but it feels very much male oriented. idk i think i feel this way bc it’s my personal pet peeve when otaku shows focus mostly on men as the intended audience (for example, when they showed her audience, all the viewers were men which like. they could have shown at least one woman who likes watching her videos yknow?). so anyway. at least it’s incredibly gay? and once again, love characters gettinf drunk lol. but idk i feel like this was made to ride the wave of hololive and get men on twitter to share funny clips idk. i like how they use actual vtuber avatars in certain scenes, and i get the vibe they’ll want to make these girls real vtubers, hence why we dont see what they actually look like but just their vtuber persona. will be checking out more ep but will drop if it gets too meh.

yuri thoughts 🌸: as mentioned, all the girls are RAGING homosexuals fr. asking about favorite lesbian porn scenarios to each other to possibly act them out. hello?!

i desire a masterlist of rick wright lore. i absolutely love that man but i don't know half the silly, goofy things he got up to and i need a long-ass post explaining all you know about that little weirdo.

HI HELLO okay so as much as i see and understand a desire for a "rick wright lore masterlist", i don't think i would be able to do proper service by just listing all of the stuff i know off my head, plus i don't want people to see it and just take everything i say at face value and not look into things further if that makes any sense

so instead i will put a rick wright source masterlist under the readmore so people can go watch/read things for themselves in as much detail as they feel comfortable doing so, + i think a lot of people aren't aware of half of the sources i take from

Books

As far as books go your best starting points are Mark Blake's Comfortably Numb and Nick Mason's Inside Out, both of which are much more generalised sources for any Pink Floyd related material - I do have PDFs of both of these (i have physical bought copies too dw), so if you can't read/listen to either of them for any reason DM me and I'll send those PDFs to you :] They're both available widely on Amazon and other bookstores and Inside Out is also available as an audiobook!!

Guy Pratt's My Bass And Other Animals is 75% his own biography and 25% pink floyd related, so while it does have some Rick-related stuff in there, don't go into it expecting any in-detail explanations. Unfortunately I don't have a PDF of this book, but it is widely available and relatively inexpensive to buy (and I totally reccomend it!)

Franka Wright has supposedly been writing a tell-all on her marriage and experiences with him, but there haven't been many updates on it in a while. I've been relatively quiet on everything she's said about him in public as I don't think I have enough information on what happened to properly comment, but if that book does drop expect me to be the first in line to take a look

Websites/Online

Please god if you have even any passing interest use rickwright.com. It's a resource largely made by his estate and has a lot of information on there, it's a really sweet and interesting labour of love and I cannot reccomend it enough

pinkfloydz.com is an older website but has a gigantic catalogue of interviews, which include a large amount of transcribed interviews with Rick from 1996. It's just such a good resource in general and I highly reccomend checking it out, as even if you're not a Rick fan you still have a lot of interviews with the others in there

Here me out here; @mamazano (who has been inactive since 2021) has SO much on there that I don't feel bad putting them down as a source. Almost everything they post about is properly cited so you can find exactly where they came from, and they catalogue a lot of stuff that is locked behind more expensive/less available books. Their attention to detail for citing and sourcing quotes has been so admirable to me even if they're no longer on Tumblr anymore!

All but 5 of them are 45-60 minute episodes (and 4 of those 5 are 25 mins), and 3 of them air twice a week. That's 22 shows from 7 different countries, including 3 GLs. And that's after I moved 3 to binges (MLMU, Meet You at the Blossom, and This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans) because I couldn't keep up and wasn't enjoying those week-to-week. It's TOO MUCH.

Last movie: I think it was BL Metamorphosis, due to @my-rose-tinted-glasses' rec and fansubbed by @furritsubs (thank you!).

Currently Reading: I'm still on book 3 of MoDu (Silent Reading), because I have had no time to read! I love this series I just haven't been prioritizing it. Also reading the Twilight out of Focus manga alongside the anime as it airs.

omg i was seeing mentions about uncut gems under the letterboxd reviews for this one film i recently added to my watchlist—do you recommend it??!!

as for film recs here are my offerings today 🤲 yknow recently i realized i watch a lot of sad and dramatic films so here’s my fav lighthearted ones </3 minus guava island but shhh

(loser bf cillian murphy and manic pixie dream girl lucy liu what more can i say really)

(suchhh a pretty and chill film. doesss have a semi-sad ending though. good music in it though, ofc)

(brought back the feeling of seeing spiderverse’s animation style for the first time!!)

(genuinely i think it’s so campy and funny i quote lines from it very often (“SHUT UP LOSER, I FUCKED YOUR MOM!” 😭😭😭))

(maybe it was a mix of the cool animation style and the voice actors doing a good job that it was charming enough to excuse the few times it could’ve been a cringe attempt at gen z humor)
