I have not gushed about this anime in a long while, so here we go!
Very pretty animation and design
Each character has a unique personality with their own struggles in life that you get to learn a little bit about
Heavy real-life topics are handled in a manner that validates the issues without making the anime as a whole feel too heavy
Friendships and bonds form as they all work hard to better their soft tennis skills
Different body types and shapes
All the kids, portrayed as bullies or not, are not portrayed as bad people and you get insight into their life, why they act how they do
There is a FtM Transgender character and a Non-binary character
This anime was cut short and might not be able to finish unless we start talking about it. People need to show that they like/love this anime enough to want a second season. This means we need conversations, we need fanart, we need fanfics, and we need to watch it over and over again on Hulu, Funimation, and/or Crunchyroll! Not illegally, because that doesn't get seen by the companies that we're trying to convince to buy another season of the show.
So let's hop to it guys. This show has been way better than an escape for me, it's been a safe place. With how many real-world topics and struggles are represented in the show, there's a good chance it could be a safe place for you as well.

i've been thinking about violet evergarden
︶︶︶ ⊹ ︶︶︶ ⊹ ︶︶︶ ⊹ ︶︶ ༊*·˚ ︶︶ ⊹ ︶︶︶ ⊹︶︶︶ ⊹︶︶︶
Tumblr media
— ❀ I remember watching this show for the first time during lockdown, it was the height of my return in watching anime shows again since school's out and there was nothing to do. My friend recommended it to me while we were looking for something to watch during her sleepover, we don't talk anymore, but I will be eternally grateful for her since she's the person who pushed me to watch my all-time favorite anime, Violet Evergarden. I have this shit tattooed on my body— best believe I LOVE and have a lot of shit to talk about this anime. Too much actually that after 3 (or 4?, idk) years, I still don't know where to start. Let's start on where I got hooked— oh, spoiler warning, go watch the show before you read this 'cause this is not going to be spoiler-free.
꒰ྀིㅤepisode one: "i love you" and auto memory dolls⠀ ಿৎ
From the first episode, I already know that this was a post-war setting, and don't get me wrong— I love war stories, not because of the violence, but because it's so inspiring and you can learn so much from it. I think I got that from my dad, he was the one who educated me about world wars, more than my history teacher.
So, this was a time where a lot of people didn't know how to read and write. That baffles me, I can't even imagine not being able to do something so simple? no, expected of me? I don't know, just something. I mean, now it's so normal that I'm writing about this anime show that I absolutely love, like how am I going to share that with other people? How will the show even exist without the writer?
It really makes you realize how important this skill is, especially for communicating with people who aren't with you. Jesus, I remember thinking a lot "Damn, if I were to meet up with my friend, how am I supposed to tell them where I am?" — additional information, I'm so bad with directions and navigation so let's just say, if I was reincarnated in this era, I would be 90% lost.
Another thought is, oh how fucking embarrassing would it be to let someone else write out your feelings to someone that you like, but also, how endearing it is that someone loves you that much that they set aside their pride— get vulnerable infront of a stranger so that their feelings would get to you.
"I heard that my childhood friend of mine… recently received a marriage offer from another man, so… I want you to tell her this! You were the first person… who was kind to me. I appreciated it. You were everything to me. I would have done anything for you. Anything at all. I want to know how you feel. I want to understand what’s in your heart. Even though… we’re apart now… I love you."
It's so simple... yet incredibly beautiful. An Auto-Memory Doll's profession was to be able to write— no, translate the feelings of a person to another. How are you able to understand them? But more importantly, for Violet, what's the meaning of I love you? When do you say it? How do you know that you love someone? What is love?
That's when she rushed into Claudia's office, demanding that she wants to become a Doll. Not because she wants to be able to help people communicate, no, it's because she wants to know what the word "love" means. She never heard it before, and the first time she ever heard it was during the last moments of her in the battlefield with Gilbert, when he was telling her to go and live freely— not as a weapon but as a person. It was his last words to her before the place exploded, before she never got to see him again.
That was the part that got me hooked. At times, I would think that I know exactly what love is, but sometimes, I would be completely clueless. Those moments where I'm clueless were moments where I am asked "What is love? What does it mean?" How am I going to explain it to someone like Violet? And then the doubts come in— do I even know love? Is love what I feel or is it familiarity?
disclaimer: up until now, I don't know what to feel about the whole... age gap thing with Violet and Gilbert. don't get me wrong, I HAAAAAAAATE IT— it ruined the show for me that's why i'd think of it as another kind of relationship, not romantic. lmk your thoughts 'cause that's my only ick with the show, this gorgeous gorgeous show, ruined by a man (why am i not surprised)
Anyway, that's all for this day. There is MUCH to talk about Violet Evergarden so I don't want to do it half-assed. Message me if you wanna be mutuals! I'm new here so if there's anything I missed or anything that I did wrong, please let me know!

Is there a female protags who radiate cunning-like bastard energy? Like kdj-like or cale-like energy? but NOT from any villainess isekai or some fantasy romance bullshit? Like a female character who such a bitch but deep down is very selfless? A female protag who is a father/mother who step up? A female char who is so two-faced? A female char who manipulative but also caring? A female char who doesnt care about herself? A female char who got always create gay-like situationship?female char who is simultaeniously a femme fatale and a girl failure? A female char who doomed and/or hunted the narrative?
I-is there?

underrated bokuaka fics #2
these are only some fics i have read, they're all underrated!! they make me feel giddy and they feed my bokuaka addiction.
ex revenge hot line | Lxnn word count: 63, 388
akaashi's side job is to get hired from someone who got hurt to date their ex and break their heart
↳ a little angsty at the end, but happy ending never the less. "you're not evil, just heartbroken."
say yes | kazzydolyn word count: 7, 721
5 times bokuto asks akaashi a question and 1 time akaashi has a life changing question for bokuto
↳ very cute and makes me feel single in 100 ways. 5+1 trend!!
call me koutarou | kazzydolyn word count: 2, 888
akaashi tries to break the enduring habit of calling bokuto "bokuto-san"
↳ i see this as very canon, this story is so well depicted! not ooc at all.
soft blue | groaninlynch word count: 6, 031
akaashi is unaware he lost his sketchbook and bokuto takes a sneak peek
↳ literally the reason why i wanted to make this list. 100% underrated!!! i love this so much
the great mystery of a hickey | sunnybluesky word count: 25, 479
hinata, atsumu and sakusa go on a mission to find the mystery lover that gave bokuto a hickey
↳ a bit long, and the trio is a bit stupid but it's bokuaka so no complaints

akaashi is a big fat liar. happy ending
↳ it's a happy ending, but akaashi lies through his teeth. do you think there's a confession?
one in a hundred | norio word count: 4, 080
though he has no proof, bokuto thinks dating akaashi would be easier if he didn't try to break up with him all the time
↳ akaashi second guesses himself so much, it projects onto his relationship. damn
4am | talonyth word count: 13, 448
akaashi doesn't call often, let alone at an ungodly hour
↳ i was quite conflicted about this story but it's actually quite good, especially at the end! almost like a slow burn. but medium. so medium burn.
wing man | CheekyBrunette word count: 8, 366
kuroo doesn't let anyone date bokuto that doesn't meet his standards. fortunately, akaashi does
↳ bokuroo is like peak comedy and friendship goals! oh to have a friend like kuroo. this story was quite nice and it's more of kuroo's pov than anything.
hanging by a moment | gabstar word count: 1, 169
finding the perfect moment isn't always easy
↳ my descriptions are so bad oml, i can't really remember what this was about, but i do remember that akaashi and bokuto has their own pace, and a lot of people like to interfere.

I will always come back to Stars Align. It is truly a magnificent anime. It isn't an escape for me, it's a safe place. In my opinion, that can be so much better. I bought a physical copy the first chance I got, but this is a good reminder that I should watch it on Hulu more often so that maybe one day we can get the rest of this amazing story.
There's plenty to talk about in the series because so much was touched on and not much was wrapped up. Having said that, if somehow the series doesn't get to continue it isn't at a horrible stopping point, but it would be INCREDIBLY unfortunate.
Stars Align delves into topics most anime wouldn't dare address , ie. Yuu's situation exploring their gender identity and Maki's well-communicated explanation of Shou being trans (FTM).
While Stars Align incorporates many stigmatized topics into its plot, it approaches them carefully and never shows the abusive side in a positive light. The scenes are raw, emotional, and incredibly realistic.
I have respect for Akane-sensei and the production team for tackling issues kids don't typically see in a series - ones that they may be struggling with themselves and aren't aware how negative an impact they can have on them since that is all they know.
Stars Align is a series you could say is ahead of its time. One that resonates with many who can relate to the issues & struggles presented. It isn't a show for escapism, like most anime out there. It is a series that faces real situations head-on.
To some, this is a weakness. But to me (and many others who resonated with a kindred spirit in the series), Stars Align is a series that makes us feel seen or heard. It shows that anyone can be struggling, even if they might not openly show it.
Stars Align's premature halting of production fits a little too well with an overarching theme on the show - the boy's soft tennis team was threatened to be shut down, and it takes a LOT of hard work for the kids to grow and save their team.
If even one scene resonated with you, please show support for Stars Align. While the odds of this series getting finished seem slim, support and attention can help the creator find a studio willing to finish the second half.
We need to come together and show support for a series that was cast aside, just like our favorite soft tennis team. To join together and fight for the second half of the story, in whatever way possible.
Spread the word - the more people who legally watch the series on Crunchyroll and Hulu will show streaming platforms that the anime means something to subscribers. Start conversations about the topics presented and the impact the series has!
Create content - art, fanfics, edits, theories...posting about the series helps spread the word to people who haven't heard of it or forgot to watch in the past. To this day, new fans are discovering Stars Align because of this! January is #MakeTheStarsAlign month - we have prompts each week to help inspire people to join in spreading the word!
Akane-sensei has thanked fans for continuing to support the series. He feels the best chance for a continuation will come from an overseas production studio, and so building our numbers is the first step of achieving some kind of renewal.
It can be hard to keep talking about a series, but the tendency to move on is exactly what makes support for a series fade away. The fight needs to continue, even if time passes! Shows can be brought back YEARS later, but support needs to still be there for that to happen.
While 3 years have passed since episode 12 aired, please don't forget about this series or the emotions it made you feel. Continue to raise awareness and spread the word to show there is support for impactful series like Stars Align. 💙

Ive seenyou mention wuxia a few times now and i wonder what that is. Would you mind explaining it to me?
not the most qualified person to explain this as i'm not, in fact, from china; but i've read a couple of wuxia so here goes:
wuxia is a genre of fiction from china specifically, about martial artists in ancient china. i don't think a specific time period is like required? obviously some dynasties are more popular but idk how it goes in that front. it just has to be Not Today and probably Too Long Ago. like pre industral revolution i think. again idk if that's a requirement, but most i've seen are from around the same relative murky pre-electricity era.
xianxia is a subgenre of wuxia that's specifically more fantasy-like, and it's not just martial arts, but also spiritual powers and cultivation (which i have no fucking clue how to explain without two hours and three tangents other than chinese magic system. if you've ever heard of chi/qi as an energy, it appears there). so like- genshin is by all accounts a xianxia, it just doesn't use the more common specific xianxia terms like cultivation. some of those are very weird to translate and probably not common for the average non-wuxia reader, so it makes sense why they're going for alternatives.
chongyun and xingqiu and xianyun are very much straight out of a xianxia. xianyun's entire story quest was the closest genshin has gotten to a straight xianxia plot so far. i highly reccomend ashikai's video on unnecessary visions if you want more info on why genshin is a xianxia hahah
cyanide narwhal has some talk of some stuff from xianxia, but that's mostly because well- fucking liyue, that's how it works there. the whole light energy striking down someone who's getting powerful and giving them godhood if they survive the strike is, while not exactly like that, something that happens in some xianxia as well. like the way adepti work in general is just very xianxia. ashikai does a much better job explaining it than i do tbh but yeah
TL;DR: wuxia is chinese martial arts fiction in ancient china, and xianxia is a wuxia subgenre with more magic elements. also genshin is a xianxia
#i was going to recomend some xianxia if you're curious but like#genuinely don't know which one is a good starting point#like i'm tempted to say just dive headfirst into mdzs like most of us did but like#is mdzs the best place to start if you know nothing? unsure#genuinely#given how it's made to feel more lighthearted and formatted more like it's a fucking videogame#svsss might be a good launching pad#but tbf it's been a while since i read it#also it has unskippable sex scenes (i think??) so like- if you don't want to read that you're kind of out of luck there#not that mdzs doesn't have that either but they're not literally Plot Relevant. like the plot does not hinge on their horizontal tango#there's probably a good wuxia to start out there but i can't really remember right now#like mdzs is the easiest to recomend bc it's trial by fire and you're going to come out of the other end knowing like 80% of it all#plus it's not nearly as traumatizing as some of the other options#and it's so easily accessible it's almost funny#like take your pick: novel. live action. animation. audio drama. comic#it's fucking everywhere and the fandom is fucking huge so that's a giant plus#but that doesn't change the fact that idk if you can watch a couple episodes to get a feel for the wuxia genre. like would that work??#so i guess i'll leave that to everyone else to comment with any recomendations if they have a good one#for like an introductory work#or just decide mdzs is just the easiest point of entry. that can always be it. i mean we all made it anyway
