The Best News of Last Week - March 27, 2023
🐢 - Why did the 90-year-old tortoise become a father? Because he finally came out of his shell!
1. New Mexico governor signs bill ending juvenile life sentences without parole
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed a bill into law that prevents juvenile offenders from receiving life sentences without eligibility for parole. The bill, known as the No Life Sentences for Juveniles Act, allows offenders who committed crimes under the age of 18 and received life sentences to be eligible for parole hearings 15 to 25 years into their sentences.
This legislation also applies to juveniles found guilty of first-degree murder, even if they were tried as adults. The move puts New Mexico in a group of at least 24 other states and Washington, DC, that have enacted similar measures following a 2021 Supreme Court ruling.
2. Promising pill completely eliminates cancer in 18 leukaemia patients
An experimental pill called revumenib has shown promise in curing terminal leukemia patients who were not responding to treatment in a long-awaited clinical trial in the United States. The drug works by inhibiting a specific protein called menin, which is involved in the machinery that gets hijacked by leukemia cells and causes normal blood cells to turn into cancerous ones.
The pill targets the most common mutation in acute myeloid leukemia, a gene called NPM1, and a less common fusion called KMT2A. The US Food and Drug Administration granted revumenib "breakthrough therapy designation" to fast-track its development and regulatory review based on the promising results of the trial.
3. Spain passes law against domestic animal abuse
Spain has passed a new law on animal welfare, accompanied by a reform of the penal code that increases prison sentences for those mistreating animals. The law will make compulsory training for dog owners, and will prohibit them from leaving their dogs alone for more than 24 hours.
It also mandates the sterilisation of cats, with exceptions for farms, and increases the penalties for mistreatment of animals to up to two years in prison, or three years in the event of aggravating circumstances.
4. Bravery medals for women who raced into 'rough, crazy' surf to save drowning girls
Elyse Partridge (far left) and Bella Broadley (far right) raced into dangerous surf to save Chloe and Violet from drowning.(ABC North Coast: Hannah Ross)
Bella Broadley and Elyse Partridge saved two 11-year-old girls from drowning at Angels Beach near Ballina, an unpatrolled beach in Australia. The younger girls, Chloe and Violet, became trapped in a rip and overwhelmed by waves and the current. Bella and Elyse jumped into action, using an esky lid as a flotation device to help them swim to the girls. Elyse helped Chloe back to shore while Bella swam further out to help Violet.
Elyse and Bella were on Wednesday named on the Governor General's Australian Bravery Decorations Honours List, which recognised 66 Australians for acts of bravery.

6. A 90-year-old tortoise named Mr. Pickles just became a father of 3. It's a big 'dill'
These critically endangered tortoises are native to Madagascar and have seen their numbers decline due to over-collection for illegal sales on the black market. Captive breeding programs have helped produce new radiated tortoises, but the species still faces extinction in the wild.
That's why the arrival of these hatchlings, born to 90-year-old Mr. Pickles and his 53-year-old partner Mrs. Pickles, is such great news. Mr. Pickles is considered the most genetically valuable radiated tortoise in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan, and the births represent a significant contribution to the survival of the species.
7. EU strikes ‘ground-breaking’ deal to cut maritime emissions
The European Parliament and EU ministers have agreed on a new law to cut emissions in the maritime sector. The law aims to reduce ship emissions by 2% as of 2025 and 80% as of 2050, covering greenhouse gas, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions.
The European Commission will review the law in 2028 and will decide whether to place carbon-cutting requirements on smaller ships. The agreement will also require containerships and passenger ships docking at major EU ports to plug into the on-shore power supply as of 2030. Penalties collected from those that fail to meet the targets will be allocated to projects focused on decarbonising the maritime sector.

Back in high school I did a little course in Spanish. Just as a kinda filler subject, in my final year – basic Spanish language. I never really got the jist of it.
Our teacher was this red haired woman from Glasgow whose name was Mrs Farrell. She had a bizarre knack for being very chirpy and friendly to you when you were in class, but she never said hello and got super awkward whenever she saw you elsewhere in the school. It was strange.
Anyway. Mrs Farrel had studied Spanish properly, and she had lived in Spain when she was a student. To study the language first-hand.
I can’t remember which city she said she lived in. But, there was one time she was talking, about her student days in Spain – and the subject of bull fighting came up. Maybe one of the students asked if she had ever seen a bull fight, and she said yes.
Farrell remarked on how she remembered “the blood” intensely. She recalled there being lots of blood. And she asked the other person who she was with, “isn’t the bull in pain?” And her friend, in the stadium, said, “the blood is soothing for it”. Honestly, that was the exact dialogue.
I’ve been sensitive to animal cruelty all my life. I don’t judge other people for their own attitudes towards animal welfare; and just about all my days, most folks have taken the piss out of me for not eating meat or for caring about animals in an overly sensitive’ way. So perhaps I have grown numb to the topic and I usually don’t mention that I’m vegan, just to avoid the hassle and pisstaking.
But bull fighting, in my opinion, is just horrific, completely absurd.
Bulls are placed in a stadium with thousands of people roaring. They are animals with no physical comprehension of that level of noise; they simply can’t handle it. They freak out. And then they have these men stabbing them with spears and swords.
How on earth would their blood be ‘soothing’ to them. They are killed in a roaring stadium with people who enjoy watching it.
I remember being a child and doing a project on ‘Ancient Rome’ in primary school. And they would tell us stories about the colosseums, and the ‘blood sports’ that went on within them. At that age I just thought it was barbaric and I didn’t like it. And the teacher didn’t seem to give a shit – or the kids either – and the information was read out without any explanation.
Even with these films about Ancient Rome, or these TV shows: I just don’t want to watch them because I’m not in to that gory stuff.
I was in Valencia last summer, and, quite close to where I was staying, there was a bull ring. I only passed it on the street. And it was crazy that in the year of 2023, these things were still happening. People were paying money to go and watch these animals be violently killed and there was a lot of money and fame involved with it.
Valencia was glorious, as a city. Obviously I didn’t have anything to do with the bull ring. When it comes to sadistically slaying animals you can count me out.

🍓 Author Ask tag 🍓
Thank you for the tag! @leisoree (here) and @at-thezenith (here!) These are all wonderful questions and a perfect moment to share with others
This is a long post ahead so I'm going to put this here already:
Gently tagging (no pressure) @writingamongther0ses @distortedsense @alnaperera @sm-writes-chaos @bluet-s @silviathebard @caxycreations @inseasofgreen @sableglass
Your questions are:
Which OC are you most fond of and why?
Is there any form of media (other movies, books, theater, news, etc.) that inspired your wip/s? How so?
What wip-related activities do you do aside from writing your wip? (making moodboards or playlists, etc.)
What are you most proud of in your wip/s and why?
What tropes are common among your wip/s? Why do you enjoy incorporating these tropes?
Which part of your wip are you most struggling and how do you plan to overcome it?
Any advice/ words of encouragement or just really a greeting to any writeblr who would have read this far?
From @leisoree
What is the main lesson of your story (e.g. kindness, diversity, anti-war), and why did you choose it?
This is kind of tricky. Karikultura is essentially a satire/social commentary on the woes of my country as a former colony of Spain and America, as well as the neo-Imperialism that I learned during my years as an activist. I guess I wanted to impart my ideals there that we, as a nation, continue to operate in a colonial mindset by patronizing the foreign and especially putting attention on foreign needs instead of the welfare of our own people. We have not learned, that's essentially what I want to say
For In Death, Forever, at its core is just about how love endures everything, even the universe itself. But at the same time, there are things that are beyond our control no matter how we fight it for. Despite that, fate can be kind and it can work out in our favor even though the outcome is not something we want.
What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding (like real-life cultures, animals, famous media, websites, etc.)?
I'm going to mention a wip that I think hinted at it before and that is Mantra (I think I remember talking about it with @yesireadbooks and @holdmyteaplease I don't know why I can't tag you HAHAHA), although I never got to fully flesh out the story I did go HARD! on the lore, which is mainly inspired by Hinduism and Philippine mythology. It has a polytheistic religion, each person has a specific deity they worship (except if you're a sage, you're mandated to have more than one deity to worship). The landscapes, I was not able to flesh out but I wanted to take inspiration in ancient India. It was also at that time that I was rereading the Ramayana and Mahabharata that I wanted to incorporate the same values of heroism, bravery, remaining true to ones vows, etc.
Karikultura isn't so deep in worldbuilding, but it's heavy on symbolism. Each character represents an idea that is personified. The main character, of course, represents our country. His friend represents our countrymen. His sister represents language. His mother represents glory. I guess that counts as worldbuilding?
In Death, Forever was supposed to be a simple time-leap story, until it just, like any other wip as you would know, expanded. I included, like in Mantra, a polytheistic system but they are not a form of religion. These gods, compared to the ones in Mantra, are not worshipped. They are considered personified forces in the universe that control various dimensions of human life. (Father Time, Sister Fates, Mother Death, I'm not sure if I'm gonna add someone else, maybe if I thought of it and if they play a relevant role in the story.) The time leap structure was based similarly on Tokyo Revengers, to which I still am an avid fan of today.
What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, help readers grow as a person?
Felipe in Karikultura appears to be a businessman who intends to expound his reach and conquer the world together with his American friends. As I've said, what I want to achieve in this story is neo-imperialism awareness through the decline of his character, that this is a faux success and the real success would rely on the prosperity of the people and not the foreigners.
Mary in In Death, Forever's goal is simple: find a way to stop the death of her husband Connor. Compared to Karikultura, there isn't really a deeper meaning in her journey apart from showing her resilient and determined nature despite her hardships, which in itself is, I think, a worthy message to the readers. It's going to a be a story about her grief, understanding the ways of the world, pushing its limits, and the raw power of the human mind against the universe and those that govern against it. In the process, she gains an unlikely ally.
How many chapters is your story going to have?
Well, I'm not really one to set a wordcount or number of chapters for my wips, but Karikultura is finished now! YEHEY! And I have finished editing it! It has Three Acts: Act 1 with 15 Scenes, Act 2 with 8 scenes and Act 3 with 6 scenes, a total of 19 scenes of 18,967 words (Kinda short but I think it's an ample size for a playscript)
In Death, Forever currently has 12 chapters with 9,519 words in, and that's not even halfway (or even a thirds) of the original plot I have in mind.
Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it?
Oh boy HAHAHHA, all my wips are original content. My top contenders of where I plan to post it are in Wattpad and A03. Actually, Karikultura is available in Public now, in Wattpad at https://www.wattpad.com/myworks/374982617-karikultura
It's in Filipino and English, a little bit of Spanish.
When and why did you start writing?
I formed the love for writing when I was in 3rd grade. The first book I read was Roald Dahl's The Magic Finger and I thought I wanted to write stories like that. I started to read more -- a hobby that I got from my mom -- and that's where I started concocting stories. I would write in notebooks about stories in schools and ideas that pop in my head. I started formally writing in high school, when I was 14 years old I think. It was a retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood except werewolves. I posted it on Wattpad then and it got good reads for a while, but I didn't get to update it frequently due to busy studies. I picked up on my writing slump when I was a college student again, a few moments before I made my writeblr account. Truly, the reason why I started writing was because I wanted to put my thoughts on paper and have an outlet for my emotions
Do you have any words of engagement for fellow writers of Writeblr? What other writers of Tumblr do you follow?
Keep being you. Don't lose sight of why you write in the first place, and that is for yourself, your leisure, your feelings, and your story. Don't be discouraged if there are challenges, these are normal. The way you handle and react to them is completely in your control, so keep going and always remember to write because it is what you love to do. It is not for anyone else to dictate to you. All the love <333333333333
From @at-thezenith
what was the first piece of writing you did where you thought "wow I'd love to be a writer"?
Okie, so I said a while ago that technically it was reading first that got me into writing, but I think the first piece that I wrote that really inspired me was a story I made about my friends in 5th grade. We were playing a royalty roleplay-esque game that my friend invented. I wrote about it in my diary, and then a flash of inspiration came into me that I could turn it into a fantasy story where each of us were queens from distant lands with different powers, each needing the other to balance the world. Kind of like that. I think that's the earliest wip I've had.
how do you gather inspiration for your works? (pinterest boards, writing prompts, etc)
The biggest inspiration for most of my wips just come into my head from either a (1) dream or (2) various media. I remember specifically having an abandoned about attending a magic school that was based on a dream, and then another about venturing into the depths of a volcano to retrieve an ancient artifact and then using lucid dreaming to travel to another dimension. (please don't ask me to revive these I literally don't know anything about them anymore, maybe in the future something might inspire me)
However, a good chunk of my serious works are from other stories, that's why one of my inspiration as a writer is also to instill inspiration to others (and that's how I also get inspiration from my lovely moots!)
For example, Karikultura is specifically a mishmash of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Grey and Chinua Achebe's Things fall apart. The story is literally an adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Grey and at it's core is the message of Things fall apart.
In Death, Forever is an awful mishmash of Ken Wakui's Tokyo Revengers and Chinese series Link Click in regards to the time travelling logistics, Crisostomo and Maria Clara from the Television series Maria Clara and Ibarra as well as the extreme grief I felt from Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. I think even the atmosphere and the multiple universes of Sonny Boy also had an influence.
Another wip (unnamed but what I have in mind is "Berserker" or something like that) is based on Carnby Kim's Bastard Manhwa in regards to the atmosphere and the motivations of the main character. It also has elements of Venom such that the alien specie is like a symbiote but not really.
All these unrelated media mix together to create the shitshow I am brewing now.
what genre is easiest to write? what's the hardest? why?
For me, fantasy and science fiction is the easiest to write because of my exposure with the genre. With all the books and movies I have read and watched in this genre, I find it easy to pick apart how to make an effective story and create a world that is intricate according to this genre.
On the other hand, the hardest for me to write is Romance. Listen, sometimes love can be an overwhelming thing to write for me. I feel like I might be overdoing it or underdoing it. Do the characters have chemistry? Am I glamorizing a red flag? Do normal couples even do this? And it doesn't help that there are a lot of romance books that I have criticized a lot. That may be one of the reason I'm skeptical of my own writing when it comes to romance (which is kinda ironic considering In Death, Forever is also a romance story. Anyway, it's always good to go outside of our comfort zones once in a while)
what does a typical day of writing look like for you?
My job required me to write a lot of technical stuff so really, it's also a part of my daily life now (just not the type of writing I do to enjoy.)
When I'm writing for my wips, I want to remain focused and undisturbed as much as possible. If you would observe, I reblog some others writers' works here sometimes. That would mean I'm not in my headspace and want to get there, and most of the time I read stuff to get in the writing headspace. I also put on ambient music, mostly piano, to stay in that headspace. I have a notebook where the ideas are propped up and its sitting in a book stand next to my laptop. I have my favorite mechanical keyboard propped up, and a cup of cold coffee by the side. I really need the external orderliness to coordinate well with my headspace HAHAHA.
free space! ramble about a character you've most enjoyed writing about
Oh boy, this is actually from a short story that I posted here a long way back, it's a prompt fill that just sparked something in my brain and I knew I had to write it down, get it done. I don't care that I have a class in the next few hours, we still have time to get this shit.
Not just the characters, but I really love the worldbuilding I did here, especially since it was all in a whim but I'm really proud of it. I really like Luna and Skye's character. Actually there was another one that was supposed to appear which is a childhood friend of Skye. I think I have written her story somewhere, I just need to find and edit it before I get it out here. I wish I could expound more on their world, but there's nothing that coming out of my brain right now lol HAHAHA. I think what I most enjoyed writing about them is the spontaneity and how I was able to come up with their stories as fast as I could, on a deadline before my classes start.
I have a lot of babies, most of them are residing in my subconscious and I love them all.
if you could pick the brains of one author, who would you pick and why?
That would be Khaled Hosseini. I was deeply moved when I read The Kite Runner and it really made me feel... feelings. There's something in the way that Hosseini weaves words into not just a story but a prose. He was the first writer that I truly admired for the way he placed words together. I said that I want to have that kind of poetic way of writing and I would love to get into Mr. Hosseini's train of thought while writing so I could write like him and string the hearts of people like what he has done for me.
7. what's one writing tip that has stuck in your head?
Write for yourself. It's very simple but powerful because it reminds me why I'm doing this in the first place: because I love it. It gives me a chance to bring my stories to life, be productive, do something meaningful, and create. Also, I'm the kind of person who believes that the universe will give people what they need the moment they do. I might not be writing just for myself. There might be someone, somewhere out there who needs to read what I wrote just as how the countless works of other authors have found me. But for now, these stories will not be finished unless I do it for myself first.
#tag games#author ask games#thank you so much this was so fun to do!#It gave me a chance to ramble about my works a little more and bring in a little introspection for myself#hope we can have writer interviews like this again

Colombia’s congress voted Tuesday to ban bullfights in the South American nation, delivering a serious blow to a centuries-old tradition that has inspired famous songs and novels but has become increasingly controversial in the countries where it is still practiced. The bill calls for the banning of bullfights in a three-year span, making the tradition illegal by the start of 2028. The new law now needs to be signed by President Gustavo Petro, who has been a longtime opponent of these events. Bullfighting originated in the Iberian Peninsula and is still legal in a handful of countries, including Spain, France, Portugal, Peru, Ecuador and Mexico. It was once a popular event, broadcast live by multiple television networks. But the tradition has come under increased scrutiny as views change about animal welfare, and many find it unacceptable to see an animal suffer for entertainment’s sake.

Squalene Market Size, Key Companies, Trends, Growth and Forecast Report 2024 - 2030
The global squalene market size is expected to reach USD 307.9 million by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 10.9% from 2024 to 2030, as per the new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The industry is majorly driven by rising health awareness among the masses and continuously rising demand for squalene in personal care and cosmetics. Squalene acts as an emollient and provides nourishment to the skin. Moreover, it finds application in pharmaceuticals due to its ability to act as an anti-cancer and anti-oxidant agent.
Squalene is now largely produced from plants. It can be obtained from vegan sources such as sugarcane, rice bran, wheat germ, palm trees, and olives, with olives being the most popular. Although many businesses prefer squalene derived from plants, there is still a possibility that it comes from animals. The demand for the product from shark liver oil is still in the market because of its low cost. In the cosmetics industry, products such as perfumes, lotions, eyeliners, and eye shadows, contain squalene in the range of 0.1% to 10%, whereas other products such as foundations and lipsticks contain 50% of the product.
The usage of synthetic and plant-based squalene has been motivated by the growing concerns over the extinction of sharks. To create squalene from plants or synthetic processing, manufacturers are engaged in research & development. A supplier of natural component products for the cosmetics market, Sophim, invested USD 11.94 million to increase its production capacity. Two-thirds of the company's investment is to be made in Spain, where a production facility is planned to be built to treble the amount of squalene that can be extracted from olive oil.
Gather more insights about the market drivers, restrains and growth of the Squalene Market
Detailed Segmentation:
Market Dynamics
The European Union has banned the use of shark oil-based products in the cosmetic industry, which has further forced manufacturers to focus on finding suitable alternatives for the product. Increasing concerns regarding the extinction of sharks have prompted use of plant-based and synthetically derived products. Its extraction has shifted towards plant-based oil that includes rice bran, amaranth olive, and others. About 65% of olive oil exports are produced, consumed, and exported by the European Union.
Source Insights
The plant segment dominated the market with a revenue share of over 82.3% in 2023. This is attributed to the declining population of sharks, increasing awareness among people regarding animal welfare and protection, and regulatory frameworks imposed by various governments for the protection of marine animals.
Plants are alternatives to sharks for extraction of the product as they can be grown and harvested sustainably. For example, the monkey Jack, or Artocarpus lakucha is an Asian plant that produces 10%-20% of its product, equivalent to its dry weight capacity. The product can also be extracted from its leaves having high purity.
End-use Insights
The personal care and cosmetics segment dominated the market with a revenue share of over 70.1% in 2023. The growth in this segment can be attributed to the usage of squalene in a variety of cosmetic products meant for skin care and hair care.
Squalene is used in a variety of cosmetic products meant for sun care, skincare, and hair care. Approximately 70-80% of the total product produced globally is consumed by the cosmetics industry. Multinational cosmetic companies such as L’Oréal, Unilever, and St. Botanica have already started to shift from shark liver oil-based to plant-based products for use in their personal care products and cosmetics owing to its exceptional properties, along with less extinction risk posed by them to sharks.
Regional Insights
Europe dominated the market with a revenue share of over 32.8% in 2023, followed by Asia Pacific region. This is attributed to large-scale production of olive oil, which is a major plant-based source of product, and increased demand for the product from major economies such as Germany, France, UK, Italy, and Spain, in the region.
As of 2023, Europe accounted for a significant share of olive oil production. Italy, France, and Spain are a few among nine producing member countries in the region. Spain accounts for more than half of the total area under olive groves in Europe. Squalene manufacturers in this region are switching to production of plant-based squalene from shark-based ones.
Browse through Grand View Research's Food Additives & Nutricosmetics Industry Research Reports.
• The global specialty ingredients market size was valued at USD 142.5 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.1% from 2024 to 2030.
• The global carotenoids market size was valued at USD 1.48 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.5% from 2024 to 2030.
Key Companies & Market Share Insights
The market is fragmented and competitive with presence of several players. Major players are clustered in European and North American regions, whereas several small players are clustered in Asia Pacific, mainly in India, China, and Japan, as the region offers easy access to shark liver oil and olive oil, which are essential raw materials for production of the product.
Partnership strategies have been adopted by the leading players in the market to enhance the reach of their products by leveraging the networks of acquired players and geographic availability. For instance, in May 2023 Amyris announced its partnership with Croda International Plc. in order to supply pharmaceutical-grade squalene in adjuvants to boost the immune response.

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has nominated Central and Eastern Europeans to key posts in the bloc’s executive including the defense, foreign and security policy, and enlargement portfolios.
The main economic jobs, however, went to Western European nations such as Spain, France and Italy that favor greater EU intervention in boosting the European economy.
Von der Leyen has nominated Poland’s permanent representative to the EU, Piotr Serafin, as the next EU Commissioner for Budget and Administration.
Serafin will take over from the current commissioner, Johannes Hahn, if his nomination is confirmed by the European Parliament in mid-October.
If appointed to the role, Serafin will report directly to von der Leyen, the Commission President said.
Former Lithuanian prime minister Andrius Kubilius will be the EU's first defense commissioner, with the new role designed to build up European military manufacturing capacity in the face of Russian aggression in Ukraine, on the bloc's eastern flank.
Estonia's Kaja Kallas will be in charge of foreign policy. She has used her position as Estonia's prime minister to become one of Europe's most vocal critics of neighboring Russia, and one of the staunchest supporters of Ukraine's bids to join the EU and NATO.
Elsewhere in the Central and Eastern European region, the migration and internal affairs portfolio went to the Austrian candidate, Finance Minister Magnus Brünner.
Slovenia was awarded the enlargement post, though the country has yet to formally nominate a candidate. The country’s former ambassador to Germany and Switzerland, Marta Kos, is tipped for the role.
Bulgaria’s former foreign minister, Ekaterina Zaharieva, was nominated as Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation.
Hungary’s Olivér Várhelyi will switch portfolios from neighborhood and enlargement to health and animal welfare while the Czech Minister for Industry and Trade, Jozef Síkela, has been put forward as Commissioner for International Partnerships.
Croatia’s Dubravka Šuica will serve in the newly created position of Commissioner for the Mediterranean.
Advocates of higher joint spending
However, the biggest growth-related jobs went to Spain, Italy and France, all countries that have called for higher joint spending and an easing of budget deficit rules.
Spain's Energy and Environment Minister Teresa Ribera will be the new antitrust chief tasked with reining in the power of Big Tech and also ensuring that the EU achieves its green goals.
Elsewhere, France's outgoing foreign minister Stephane Sejourne will be in charge of the key portfolio of industrial strategy and will seek to boost the bloc’s competitiveness on the global stage.
Most controversially, Raffaele Fitto, a member of Italian premier Giorgia’s Meloni’s hard-right ruling party, will be one of Von der Leyen’s six executive vice presidents and will look after ‘cohesion and reforms’.
While Fitto's appointment is set to rankle Europe’s left and centrist parties, it is seen as a clear nod to the growing influence of the right. In his new role, Fitto will be charged with narrowing the wealth divide between Europe’s rich and poor.
Von der Leyen had said before making her picks that she would strive for gender balance in her new Commission line-up. She failed in that bid, achieving a 40-60 split of women to men, commenting: “As much we have achieved there is still so much to do.”

Self feeding Feeding Systems are in High Demand
Self-propelled feeding systems are the most advanced and flexible systems available in the market. Many dairy farms in North America have already adopted these systems because of various advantages associated with them compared to conventional feeding systems. Advantages of self-propelled feeding systems include flexible operation, a decrease in labor cost, and maximum feeding optimization.
Ruminant Segment Under the Livestock Category is Projected to Dominate the Feeding Systems Market
The ruminant species such as cattle, sheep, goats, and buffaloes are mainly reared for producing dairy and meat products in developing and developed countries. Feeding ruminants at the required time is necessary for enhancing digestion and production efficiency. It helps to improve the feed conversion and absorption and strengthens their immune system. Feeding systems help farmers to provide feed products that align with the requirements of ruminants and help in maintaining the health of a large herd. The consumption of beef has also increased in various regions such as North America and Europe.

Europe Is Projected To Account For The Majority Of Share In The Global Feeding Systems Market During The Forecast Period.
This region comprises major economies such as the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the Rest of Europe. Europe is expected to offer a huge platform for the potential growth of the feeding systems market. The EU dairy sector is the second-largest agricultural sector in the region, representing more than 12% of the total agricultural output. Various innovations are done by companies over a period to help farmers. The European poultry meat sector follows production methods in compliance with the very strict EU rules applied throughout the production chain. The current standards in place for EU poultry meat are among the highest in the world, focused on continuing to improve production conditions in terms of resource conservation and animal welfare. This is one of the major reasons to adopt feeding systems so that farmers can monitor livestock health regularly, maintain hygiene, and feed regularly with an appropriate amount of nutrition.
The key players in this market include DeLaval (Sweden), GEA Group Aktiengesellschaft (Germany), Lely (Netherlands), Trioliet B.V. (Netherlands), VDL Agrotech (Netherlands), ScaleAQ (Norway), BouMatic (US), Pellon Group Oy (Finland), Rovibec Agrisolutions (Canada), CTB, Inc. (US), Afimilk Ltd. Colombia moves to ban bullfighting
Colombia’s Congress voted on Tuesday to ban bullfighting in the South American nation, dealing a major blow to a centuries-old tradition that has caused much controversy in countries where it is still practised, FoxNews reports.
The bill would ban bullfighting for three years, making the tradition illegal by the start of 2028. President Gustavo Petro, who has long opposed the events, will sign the new law soon.
Bullfighting originated in the Iberian Peninsula and is still allowed in several countries including Spain, France, Portugal, Peru, Ecuador and Mexico.
Once a popular event was broadcast live on numerous television networks. However, the tradition has come under scrutiny as views on animal welfare are changing and many find it unacceptable to see an animal suffer for entertainment. Terry Hurtado, an animal rights activist and city council member in Cali, who has been leading protests against bullfights since the 1990s, said:
This ban is a huge victory for organisations that have worked to transform society and reject violence against animals. I feel relieved that bulls and horses (which also participate in some bullfights) in Colombia will no longer be tortured, and that children will no longer be exposed to this spectacle.

Killer whales keep ramming and sinking boats. Scientists now may know why, report says.
Elizabeth Weise and Ramon Padilla for USA TODAY:
For the last five years, killer whales have been ramming – and in some cases sinking – expensive yachts, fishing boats and motorboats in the crystalline waters off the coast of Spain, Portugal, France and Morocco.
Why has been a mystery – until recently.
A multinational group of orca experts that met in February and were sponsored by the governments of Spain and Portugal has released a report outlining why they think it's happening and what can be done to stop it.
What originally appeared to be attacks on more than 673 boats since 2020 now seem more likely to be a bunch of bored teenage orcas looking for something to do, said cetacean expert Alexandre Zerbini. Essentially, the whales started a fad of playing with boat rudders.
…
"It's a very sophisticated thing to do something for no purpose other than that it amuses you," [Naomi Rose, a senior scientist with the Animal Welfare Institute in Washington, D.C.] said.
You could describe like half the life decisions I make in that way so I understand where the orcas are coming from

RSPCA calls for halt to plans for world's first octopus farm - RSPCA
The RSPCA is seriously concerned about plans to establish the world’s first commercial octopus farm in Spain. Around one million octopuses could be reared at a proposed farm in the Port of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, producing 3,000 tonnes of octopus each year. This concerning development has sparked the animal welfare charity to raise […]

BRAZIL - Diasporas and forced migration
The “Caixa do Divino” is the only exclusively womxn drumming and singing tradition in Brazil and exists in the context of Candomblé Houses (afro-indigenous diasporic semi-autonomous land) and Maroon Communities as part of the celebrations of Oxalá, an ancient force of nature that praise for the prophecy of The Earth having hundred years of peace through the ruling of children.
Brazil is the country that had historically the largest forced migration population from the African continent in the world during more than 400 years of enslavement operated by the Portuguese Empire and financed by colonial enterprises based in France, Spain and The Netherlands. There would be a lot to be said about the global implications of this nefarious economic strategy and the immense welfare that was taken and stolen from the colonised country. Activities such as gold and silver mining, sugar cane, cotton and coffee plantations, and animal breeding are among the activities that support this economic strategy, enforcing an intense exploiting project for the benefit of Eurocentric economies. This economic strategy is still in place in the current globalized economic context, and it had and has immense implications for the livelihood of millions of people and the environment, including the destruction of the Amazon and other forest biomes, contributing to the current alarming climate change crisis affecting the whole planet.
During the implementation of this economic strategy based on the slavering labour model, the whole of the Americas suffered the biggest known genocide in history; in 100 years of colonisation, 97% of the native population was brutally killed. In this regard, besides not being the focus of this project, we believe that it is important to highlight that the Eurocentric perspective tries to re-tell colonisation stories, removing or hiding the horrors done to the original populations in the Americas, to their territories and the global consequences it has until nowadays.
In this context, this project aims to acknowledge the complex diasporic ethnic culture or resistance and the permanence and continuity of people (s) and lands throughout this violent process, despite and beyond all the difficulties. This resistance process made Brazil one of the most prominent and welcoming places for immigrant populations. Brazil has the largest remaining indigenous protected territories in the world, the largest African-descendent population outside the African continent, the largest Japanese community outside Japan, the largest Lebanese community outside Lebanon, and huge communities of Italian, Spanish, German, Chinese, Romani and Jewish people, among many others. Nowadays, despite the process of forcing their mixing, this diversity of populations living in Brazil holds a place where anyone can become and name themselves, for the good and the bad, as Brazilian. One of these mixing strategies, not from the perspective of oppression but from the standpoint of resistance, resulted in the interchange of two main traditional structures: the Amerindian cosmology and the African diaspora.

Egg Processing Market Growth Opportunities by 2029
The global egg processing market is expected to reach USD 47.2 billion by 2029, with an estimated value of USD 37.5 billion in 2024, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.7% from 2024 to 2029. This growth surge is primarily attributed to several key factors, such as consumers are increasing awareness of the nutritional value of eggs, which are rich in protein, vitamins, and essential minerals. This drives the demand for both fresh and processed egg products. The food industry heavily relies on egg products for various applications, such as baking, pasta production, sauces, and dressings. The growth of the food industry, particularly in bakery and confectionery segments, directly translates to increased demand for processed eggs.

Opportunities:Cutting-edge technology enhances efficiency and market appeal in egg processing.
The integration of advanced automation technologies in egg production presents a significant opportunity for the industry's growth and efficiency. In Canada, where labor shortages and the transition to cage-free systems are driving forces, investments in automated packing, stacking, and palletization technologies are enhancing operational efficiency and egg quality. For instance, the adoption of automated packing and stacking equipment, such as Damtech's systems, streamlines egg collection and processing, reducing labor-intensive tasks and improving productivity. Additionally, innovations like the Ovoconcept palletizing robot at Rose Valley Colony exemplify how automation can significantly increase efficiency, with the ability to palletize 10,000 eggs in just 30 minutes. These technological advancements not only optimize operations but also improve egg quality and cleanliness, leading to fewer cracked and broken eggs. With potential return on investments as short as four to five years for equipment like the Ovoconcept robot, the adoption of automation offers a promising opportunity for egg processing companies to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and meet evolving consumer demands.
Dietary Supplements are One of the fastest-growing Food Processing and Manufacturing End-Use Application Segments During the Forecast Period
Processed egg products, such as powders, are increasingly being used in dietary supplements due to their rich nutritional profile and potential health benefits. According to the article provided by EurekAlert in September 2022, Malnutrition affects millions, especially children, in Africa. Egg powder could be a powerful tool to combat malnutrition in children, especially in areas where fresh eggs are scarce. While it lacks some essential fatty acids compared to fresh eggs, it packs a punch of vitamins, amino acids, and trace elements. Plus, it boasts a long shelf life, easy transport, and simple preparation, making it ideal for distribution in deprived areas. A study by the Leibniz Institute for Food Systems Biology confirms its potential, showing that adding egg powder equivalent to one egg daily can significantly reduce underweight and stunting in children. This research highlights the potential of egg powder as a readily available and effective dietary supplement for tackling malnutrition in vulnerable populations.

Europe accounts for the second-most dominant position within the egg processing market throughout the forecast period.
According to the European Commission in 2023, the European Union (EU) has over 350 million laying hens, producing nearly 6.7 million tons of eggs annually. France, Germany, Spain, and Italy are the top producers, accounting for more than half the EU's production. Processed egg products are becoming increasingly popular in Europe, driven by growing consumer concerns about animal welfare and environmental impact are pushing egg processors to adopt more sustainable practices, such as sourcing eggs from cage-free hens and using recyclable packaging. However, adapting to evolving consumer preferences and addressing welfare concerns are the major factors contributing to the growth of the market.
