Colombia's congress voted on Tuesday to ban bullfights in the South American nation, delivering a serious blow to a centuries old tradition that has inspired famous songs and novels but has become increasingly controversial in the countries where it is still practiced. The bill approved by Colombia's congress calls for the banning of bullfights in a three year span, making the tradition illegal by the start of 2028. The new law now needs to be signed by President Gustavo Petro, who has been a long time opponent of these events. Bullfighting originated in the Iberian peninsula and is still legal in Spain, France, Portugal, Peru, Ecuador and Mexico, among other countries.

Back in high school I did a little course in Spanish. Just as a kinda filler subject, in my final year – basic Spanish language. I never really got the jist of it.
Our teacher was this red haired woman from Glasgow whose name was Mrs Farrell. She had a bizarre knack for being very chirpy and friendly to you when you were in class, but she never said hello and got super awkward whenever she saw you elsewhere in the school. It was strange.
Anyway. Mrs Farrel had studied Spanish properly, and she had lived in Spain when she was a student. To study the language first-hand.
I can’t remember which city she said she lived in. But, there was one time she was talking, about her student days in Spain – and the subject of bull fighting came up. Maybe one of the students asked if she had ever seen a bull fight, and she said yes.
Farrell remarked on how she remembered “the blood” intensely. She recalled there being lots of blood. And she asked the other person who she was with, “isn’t the bull in pain?” And her friend, in the stadium, said, “the blood is soothing for it”. Honestly, that was the exact dialogue.
I’ve been sensitive to animal cruelty all my life. I don’t judge other people for their own attitudes towards animal welfare; and just about all my days, most folks have taken the piss out of me for not eating meat or for caring about animals in an ‘overly sensitive’ way. So perhaps I have grown numb to the topic and I usually don’t mention that I’m vegan, just to avoid the hassle and pisstaking.
But bull fighting, in my opinion, is just horrific, completely absurd.
Bulls are placed in a stadium with thousands of people roaring. They are animals with no physical comprehension of that level of noise; they simply can’t handle it. They freak out. And then they have these men stabbing them with spears and swords.
How on earth would their blood be ‘soothing’ to them. They are killed in a roaring stadium with people who enjoy watching it.
I remember being a child and doing a project on ‘Ancient Rome’ in primary school. And they would tell us stories about the colosseums, and the ‘blood sports’ that went on within them. At that age I just thought it was barbaric and I didn’t like it. And the teacher didn’t seem to give a shit – or the kids either – and the information was read out without any explanation.
Even with these films about Ancient Rome, or these TV shows: I just don’t want to watch them because I’m not in to that gory stuff.
I was in Valencia last summer, and, quite close to where I was staying, there was a bull ring. I only passed it on the street. And it was crazy that in the year of 2023, these things were still happening. People were paying money to go and watch these animals be violently killed and there was a lot of money and fame involved with it.
Valencia was glorious, as a city. Obviously I didn’t have anything to do with the bull ring. When it comes to sadistically slaying animals you can count me out.

Happy Pride Month!
I am back! (kinda)
I've recently been to Seville and while I don't support bull fighting at all (Of course, I am strongly opposed to animal cruelty and torturing them for the whole purpose of entertainment, but that's another story), I noticed, that the *AeStHetiCs* were.... quite stunning
So I tried making it into something... romantic :)
Musical inspiration here

Bullfighting originated in the Iberian Peninsula and is still legal in a handful of countries, including Spain, France, Portugal, Peru, Ecuador and Mexico. It was once a popular event, broadcast live by multiple television networks. But the tradition has come under increased scrutiny as views change about animal welfare, and many find it unacceptable to see an animal suffer for entertainment’s sake.

Photo
It's not him. The man on the photo is Sanchez Vara, who's still an active matador, here apparently doing a stunt to provoke the bull.
Alvaro Munera gave up corrida and became an anti-corrida activist after he got wounded in a fight and left paraplegic as a result.

This incredible photo marks the end of Matador Torero Alvaro Munera’s career. He collapsed in remorse mid-fight when he realized he was having to prompt this otherwise gentle beast to fight. He went on to become an avid opponent of bullfights. Even grievously wounded by picadors, he did not attack this man.
Torrero Munera is quoted as saying of this moment: “And suddenly, I looked at the bull. He had this innocence that all animals have in their eyes, and he looked at me with this pleading. It was like a cry for justice, deep down inside of me. I describe it as being like a prayer - because if one confesses, it is hoped, that one is forgiven. I felt like the worst shit on earth.”

Standing alone.
If I've learned anything from life, It's that sometimes the darkest times can bring us to the brightest places.
I've learned that most the toxic people can teach us the most important lessons; that our most painful struggles can grant us the most necessary growth; and that the most heartbreaking losses of friendship and love can make room for the most wonderful people.
I've learned that what seems like a curse in the moment can actually be a blessing, and that what seems like the end of the road is actually just the discovery that we are meant to travel down a different path.
I've learned that no matter how difficult things seem, there is always hope.
And I've learned that no matter how powerless we feel or how horrible things seem, we can't give up.
We have to keep going; even when it's scary, even when all our strength seems gone, we have to keep picking ourselves back up and moving forward, because whatever we're battling in the moment, it will pass, and we will make it through.
We've made it this far, we can make it through whatever comes next.
Dust off your dreams. Keep going, keep growing.

REVIEW: The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
Tumblr media
SUMMARY (Provided by Goodreads)
The quintessential novel of the Lost Generation, The Sun Also Rises is one of Ernest Hemingway’s masterpieces and a classic example of his spare but powerful writing style.
A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, the novel introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. First published in 1926, The Sun Also Rises helped establish Hemingway as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century.
MY REVIEW: 4/5 stars
I was really not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. The events of the story were not super interesting, but Hemingway has a way of making me feel like I'm right there while everything is happening. His descriptions are short but incredible and beautiful. His simplicity makes the story so easy to enjoy, and the ending was perfect.
I will say, I was uncomfortable with the antisemitism in this book, and other racial slurs that were used, but I did have to keep reminding myself, "That was just the time period," which doesn't make it okay, but it makes it understandable and it allows me to still enjoy a story which might include some stuff like that.
