For Whumptober 2024 Prompt 18: Unreliable Narrator

One of his people was missing.  The one who smelled like earth with the big, hard petting hands.  His walking friend who was always going outside and letting Ozzie come with him.

He came and went as they all did, of course.  Ozzie never knew where or why.  But the one with paw horns that he wasn’t allowed to chew was taking an especially long time to come back this time.

Ozzie lay by the door and waited.  The mailman came and went but no one came to growl with him.  When Ozzie warned the house about the cat traipsing through their yard, nobody came to check the threat.  When the sun went down, Ozzie’s mother let him out into the yard.  But it should have been his walking friend taking him for their evening perimeter patrol.

The house felt all wrong.  All of Ozzie’s people were distressed and not doing the things they normally did at the times they normally did them!  That made Ozzie feel distressed too.  What was going to happen?  Would it be like this forever?

When would his friend be back?  Where had he gone?  Ozzie checked his bed, explored every room, sniffed all over the back deck, combed through the garden, stood at the edge of the yard and smelled the breeze for any sign.  He even tried to go looking in the woods, but then his very fast friend came and made him go back to the house.

Ozzie trudged up the back steps.  He passed his food bowl but he wasn’t hungry so he only ate a few bites.  He peaked out the windows by the front door, but his missing friend had not returned.  Ozzie lay down and rested his chin on his paws.

He wanted his walking friend to come back now.

Me: ... Oh?

"During a zombie apocalypse-"

Me: OH?

"Who teams up with a dog to survive."

Me: OH FUCK YEAH

This was so cute hahah and it delivers exactly what it promises: a flock of sheep trying to solve the murder of their human shepherd. They act like sheep--forgetting what they're doing because they'd rather graze, getting spooked and running away, misinterpreting human words and names. Charming through and through, cozy as a wool sweater. The only downsides are minor: The middle is quite thin on clues so it was tempting to skim. A late introduction of a new sheep character who talks strangely was confusing. If you only like the hardboiled, gory details kind of mystery, this will absolutely not do it for you. This is cuddly, silly, and sweet, for fans of dramatic irony and those interested in unusual point of view characters. Several of the sheep have satisfying emotional arcs, and they have a whole village full of suspects to investigate and misunderstand.

Blood sang loudly to its ears, as did the loud men that were after it. Its muzzle was still wet from the time they tried to drown it.
