I h3ad cannon athat all the batfam members have had/are still in their emo/goth phases.
Example:
Bruce dressed as a bat and punches criminals at night (I also head cannon that he listens to the rolling stones and MCR)
Anyways thoughts?
Also what were the other batfam members emo/goth phases like?
Dick: He was hella neurotic in his late Robin/early Nightwing days. That plus his mullet and guitar tells me he probably tried to live out of a used van he bought for $700 after a fight with Bruce only to come home a week later when someone knocked on his window.
Jason: He's the theater/classic lit goth. When he was younger he would read by the glow of a candelabra even though the lights work perfectly fine. Post-resurrection, he graduates to the biker anarchist who has no problem launching a molotov at a CEO's mansion.
Tim: He's from the 90s. He's sitting in that Y2K grunge-emo-punk gray area where his playlist is a mix of the Clash, Nirvana, and Green Day. He's coloring his hair with Kool-Aid, playing with makeup, ripping his own clothes, and talking about new songs on AOL.
Damian: He's aiming for dark academia, but that's hard to pull off if you know what American schools look like. He annotates the margins of his books with notes he thinks are insightful but are actually just basic observations. Also he listens to Imagine Dragons.
Duke: This kid isn't emo or goth, he is a punk through and through. Sassing the cops? Jumping off a bridge? Leading a ragtag vigilante team? If he wanted to, I bet he can pull off a leather jacket with some homemade spikes while blasting Bad Brains and Death.
Cullen: Canonically, he watches anime and Supernatural, and I've made a lot of Tumblr references with him. He's definitely your quintessential 2010s emo nerd—Black Parade, fandoms, the whole shabang. He also definitely followed Dan and Phil.
Stephanie: She strikes me as the early 2000s pop-punker—think MySpace and Avril Lavigne. She probably had a Not Like Other Girls phase that she quickly grew out of. I can see her cutting posters out of magazines and sneaking her MP3 under an oversized hoodie.
Cassandra: She canonically listens to Killswitch Engage, so I like to imagine what she was like as a baby metalhead. Maybe she thrifted a Pantera shirt and chopped her hair with safety scissors. And at concerts she's absolutely up front when the wall of death happens.
Barbara: I think she dabbled in a little bit of everything without ever outwardly expressing it. Her playlist is all over the board, from softer rock to screamo. She also experimented with makeup a little, like black lipstick, and is more involved in the activism side of things.
Harper: She's definitely industrial punk with a huge emphasis on the DIY aspect of the subculture. She strings soda tabs into chains, turns old screws into boot spikes, and even learned to give herself tattoos. She also absolutely has a drawer full of patch pants.
Carrie: She's a TikTok e-girl, leaning into the pinks and purples along with black and white. She turns fishnet leggings into gloves and has a bunch of animal ear headbands. She also listens to Melanie Martinez and Tame Impala regardless of if they count as alternative.
Kate: Queer people play a huge role in the punk scene and vice versa. I can absolutely see Kate jamming out to an early Pansy Division track or searching places like Bandcamp to support smaller indie artists. Also she has a jacket that says "Nazi punks fuck off."
Alfred: Before punk and its subgenres, Alfred was canonically a delinquent and in that day, delinquency meant gelled-up hair and moving like Elvis. The hair didn't work out for him, but he was able to catch one of the first shows Buddy Holly played in London.
Selina: Alt cultures are based on not having much and working with what you got. Selina would use the five-finger discount at big-box stores and save her money to support small businesses. She also went around listening to free local rock shows on Fridays.
Bruce: He listened to the Rolling Stones before, but his first real intro to the scene was a handmade zine he found on the floor at school. From there, he explored more underground artists and took up journaling as a way to vent his feelings. And then: Batman.

Animal Jam background alphas: Harper the Seal
I imagine her as really northern with a mostly white-silver body but a cape that shines like the northern lights in the darkest, blackest sky. I imagine her as stoic and serious, kind of like Bluestar WC or Glacier WOF (wings of fire, not walls or floors). Though of course she has no actual confirmed personality... or gender, even. She's just a statue. But I love her

Halsin/Tav Week Day 1
This week of prompts comes at a great time, as my Tav and Halsin have been separated for a few chapters in my main fic and are just about to be reunited. I’m excited to get back to writing about by favorite bear. This is an edited excerpt from the next chapter I am working on. I’ve left out some of the Astarion-involved beats, just in case that isn’t your jam, but they are a throuple in my main fic.
Most of my Halsin shorts involve scent kink, so feel free to check those out in my archive, they will all be tagged with #Halsin.
Reunited (Scent Kink)
Content and Warnings: scent kink, oral sex, PIV sex (slightly rough), squirting, creampie.
Halsin Dry Humping Chapter
Halsin had been occupying his time at the inn reading, teaching the tiefling orphans some useful skills, and playing with Scratch and Hootles, the owlbear cub. He’d been trying to keep his mind off Tav while she was at Moonrise Towers, but was having a difficult go of it. He swore he could smell her scent one day, so he lingered by the bridge that led to the inn, hoping for any signs of the party returning. By mid-afternoon, between the cooking fires and heavy fog creeping in, the air was too clouded pick up much of anything else. He gave up waiting with a disappointed sigh and shifted to his owlbear form to run around with the animals. He had no smell in this form and nearly missed Tav’s arrival, but saw a clamor of people heading towards the lake. He shifted back to his elven form to ask what was happening. “A boat has been spotted on the lake, coming towards us,” one of the Harpers replied, taking up her sword.
“Foes or allies?”
“We don’t know,” the woman called as she ran towards the small docks.
Halsin sniffed the air, hoping to discover which. He caught Tav’s scent again, much stronger this time. It made him so excited, he involuntarily shifted to his bear form, bounding towards the lake. He chuffed the air as he ran, catching more of her smell as they drew closer together. He could smell others among her, unwashed and afraid, but he focused solely on her trail. Harpers and armed tieflings had stationed themselves on and around the small dock, who he narrowly avoided running into. There were a few screams and shouts as he ran past people, an excited growl rumbling in his throat.
Tav heard the commotion before she saw it, just off the boat and starting to help others off onto the dock. A large brown bear scrambled around the corner, letting out a happy bellow as their eyes met. Halsin shifted back right as he came upon her, taking her in his arms and sweeping her off her feet. “I’ve been smelling you all day. I thought I was going mad,” Halsin kissed her greedily, gripping her ass tightly. Tav kissed him deeply in return, the comfort of his sturdy arms making her melt. He’d managed to grow a slight beard in the short time they were apart, nearly rivaling Gale’s.
“We’d been doing circles in the lake half the day because of the fog before we finally spotted the Inn…I’ve missed you so much,” she murmured between kisses, brushing her fingers against the soft bristles on his face.
“I counted the seconds we were apart,” he finally set her down with a happy smile.
“How many was it?” She gazed up at him, still held tightly in his arms.
“Far too many,” he replied.
There were other happy reunions between couples, though none as public and passionate as theirs had been. Halsin pounced on Tav as soon as they’d gotten up to their room. “Wait,” Tav moaned as Halsin reached down to undo her pants. “You should hear the news first…good and bad.”
“Alright,” he nodded, his fingers still hooked impatiently under her waistband.
“Thorm has sent us to retrieve the Nightsong, so we know exactly where it is. And if he wants it, it must certainly be connected with the curse, right?”
“Not necessarily, but keeping it out of his hands will be a great benefit regardless. And the bad news?”
“Uhmmm, Minthara…the drow who held you captive…she survived somehow and made her way to Moonrise. Where they promptly imprisoned her.”
“Good,” Halsin nodded. “She’s very dangerous.”
“Except,” Tav paused, biting her lip. “I helped get her out…and she’s returning with the others on foot.”
“I see,” he nodded again, his expression remaining neutral. “And why did you do such a thing?”
“With the cult turning on her so quickly, she wants revenge. Now that she’s near the prism, she won’t be influenced by the Absolute anymore. She can provide us with useful information.”
“And you will trust what she has to say?”
“I’m not saying we let her have free rein at camp or even keep her alive after getting information out of her but…the cultists are planning to march on Baldur’s Gate. I know you have no love for the city, but it is my home. We need to find out everything we can.”
He nodded and smiled slightly, letting his fingers move up to rub along her hips. “I may not ever trust her, but I trust you…with all my heart.”
He kissed Tav deeply again, pulling her into another tight embrace. “Damn,” she pulled away with a heavy breath, his growing arousal pressing against her stomach. “I was kind of hoping you’d be mad at me…be a little rough and feral.”
He laughed, giving her ass a tight squeeze. “You only have to ask me for that.”
He picked up her hips with ease, carrying her and setting her down on the nearby dresser with a thud. He tore open the laces of her pants, breaking them in several places. He pulled her pants and underclothes down forcefully, leaving them around her ankles as he dove face first into her cunt. “Oh!” She cried as his tongue went straight between her lips, snaking inside her a little. She managed to kick off her pants and shoes completely as he ravenously licked and sucked upon her. He pulled one of her legs over his shoulder, giving him deeper access for his tongue to reach.
He was even more hungry than their first time together, barely taking a breath and leaving no spot on her delta untouched. She could barely contain her cries, holding onto the dresser as it rocked back and forth from his vigorous tasting. “Gods…Halsin! Oh!” She moaned, coming quickly from the long, forceful sucks on her clit. He didn’t stop there, however, adding his fingers to beckon more honey into his mouth.
She was hanging onto the edge of the dresser now, with both legs wrapped around his head. His beard tickled as he nuzzled against her, nibbling her between licks. He left teeth marks in her thighs, completely frenzied by her taste. “Fuck! Oh! Don’t stop!” She came again as he flicked his tongue inside her, the bridge of his nose pressed hard against her clit.
“Another?” He breathed hot against her sex, his hungry gaze catching hers. He could stay like this for hours if she wished it.
“Inside me, please,” she begged, leaning back against the dresser. He nodded, taking one last agonizing lick from her asshole up to her clit.
She untangled her legs from his shoulders and put them on the floor, waiting for him to undo his pants, slipping her shirt over her head. “You are more beautiful than my memories could recall,” he looked up at her as he unlaced himself, his cock springing free easily.
“I could barely sleep without you beside me,” she sunk down, letting him help guide her hips. “Fuck!” Her legs trembled as he eased just past her entrance. “Have you somehow gotten bigger?”
“Just more excited to see you,” he moaned, slipping further inside her. “I woke up throbbing every morning…but waited for you.”
“You did?” She huffed, slowing moving up and down his thick shaft.
“You asked me to,” he let out a slow sigh as he slid deeper inside her.
“Would you do anything that I asked you to?” She whimpered, circling her hips around him once she’d finally engulfed him to the base of his cock.
“Yes,” he whispered.
“Then fuck me harder than you ever have before,” she looked him directly in the eyes, pulsing her muscles around him.
He gripped her hips tightly, moving her to the floor and pressing on top of her. She slid his pants past his hips, gripping his ass tightly. “Yes…just like this, my bear,” she moaned as he pushed her legs back against her chest, testing her flexibility. They sat on his shoulders as he pounded her hard in a full mating press, letting out low growls with each deep thrust. Her eyes rolled back as each thrust nudged against her g-spot, making her breath sharper.
“I need you,” he snarled, truly letting himself go as he fucked her harder.
She gripped his arms tightly, feeling the urgent, powerful sensation that she had yet to experience with him. “Oh Gods…fuck…fuck…fuck!” She screamed, forgetting all about the thin walls of the inn. Fluid rushed out around his cock, soaking the floor as she began to squirt. She shook so hard he thought for a moment that he might have hurt her, beginning to slow down. “No…please,” she begged, gripping his arms tighter, knowing there was more to come. “Don’t stop…come in me…right now.”
“Clataedre…my love,” he mewled her elven name, never feeling more desperate to come than in this moment.
He pressed his forehead against hers, pounding her with a few more thrusts before spending nearly a tenday of unfulfilled desire into her gushing canal. Their cries joined in harmonic ecstasy, echoing through the entire inn again. Lae’zel had wisely moved rooms before they’d left for Moonrise and the unfortunate tiefling couple who was now roomed next door went downstairs to make their own inquiry about switching. The two elves cooed and laughed as they caught their breath, lying together in the wet pool of their lovemaking. “Sorry,” she grinned as his knee slipped in their shared ejaculate.
“Don’t be,” he smiled, falling to one side of her and pulling her close. “I…haven’t been able to experience that with someone for a very long time.”
“It doesn’t happen a lot…but when it does…it’s a deluge.”
“One of nature’s wonders,” he nuzzled against her. “Do you…enjoy when I am…a little less gentle with you?”
“I like when you don’t hold back at all. I know that you would never hurt me,” she nodded, rasping her finger against his beard. It was still short enough that she would have a little bit of irritation on her thighs, but it was well worth it. “You are incredible.”
“You are all I’ve ever wanted,” he nuzzled down to her armpit, taking in more of her scent.
“That tickles,” she giggled, his nose and lips brushing against the delicate skin.
“Then it is unfortunate that you smell so good,” he continued to kiss and nibble her under arms, making her squeal.

Even though Seattle is known for it's vast amount of rain and that's why people avoided it a lot of time but Hunter loved it. He loved the smell of the rain hitting the concrete and the way that everything shined as the sun came out while cloud disappeared. Hunter was never the type to be on the football field, but something that he was good at was the sport of Volleyball. It was apparent from a young age that he was incredibly talented on the court. It probably helped that his mom was a big Volleyball player as well.
In the classroom though, Hunter was superior. He was a brainiac that didn't have to worry about balancing a social life with making sure he remained the top of his class. Hunter has a photographic memory and so once he has looked at something once then he didn't have to worry about forgetting it. This was something that teacher tried to pin on him as cheating. They thought that there was some way that he was sneaking notes in because he never had any incorrect answers on his tests.
Hunter then proved a lot of teachers wrong and showed them he had a photographic memory by looking at books that he had never seen before in his life. When the teachers would ask him different questions, he was able to recite the precise wording from the sections they were asking about. They were astonished at how smart Hunter's mind was.
When it came to what Hunter wanted to do with his life, he was good with coding and working on websites that when his work was seen by colleges, he was offered a scholarship and Hunter was more than excited to show the world what he could do. Obviously, Hunter excelled in college and he ended up at the top of his class there as well. When graduation came, he had multiple offers from jobs all around the world. He actually ended up taking a job with a company in London, but they allowed him to remain in Seattle where his heart was.
Eventually, his siblings had all relocated to New York and he felt alone. Hunter's parents had passed away and they felt like it was time to leave the nest and they found New York to work better for them. He decided that it was time for himself to be with his siblings because that was what family was all about.

For the 23rd CCC Mix, 'Dream Stuff', Deakin and Geologist of Animal Collective present a two-hour water magic mixtape that gently segues from golden hour meditations to gauzy twilight jams.
From their inception, the four members of Animal Collective: Deakin, Geologist, Avey Tare and Panda Bear have created music as primal as face paint and as expressive as the yells they first fed into their sampler. Every new record is a change in direction on a journey undertaken without maps. The destination remains the same - the Collective consciousness, where formulae and rules can never be applied.

I love you so much it's eating me up inside.
A tooth rottingly sweet yandere writing blog ♡
|
|
\/
(Below is the full masterlist!)
(Here is the OC masterlist!)
(Writing commissions are open!)
Welcome! I hope you're hungry. :)
(Scroll for a list of the yandere stuff I've posted here!)
You can call me Pastel, Velvet, or Vel! I've been (extremely) into yanderes for a good portion of my life and I want to share this weird ass interest with strangers on the internet because fuck knows I can't talk to people in real life about this lmao
On this here blog I'll be writing yandere x readers, yandere imagines and anything else yandere, maybe poetry too idk guess we'll see 🤷♀️
~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~
Requests are currently open,
But there are some things that I really wouldn't want to write about. Some of these include, but are not limited to:
Pedophilia and large age gaps
Incest
Cannibalism
Yanderes that intentionally abuse their darlings emotionally or physically
Harming or killing of animals or children
NSFW, I'm fine with mentioning it in passing but I'm in no way good enough at writing that to post it publically
If you request something that's not on the list and I say "sowwy I don't really feel comfortable writing that", it's because small brain forget to add on list, I'll update it whenever that happens.
If you have a question about one of these rules, about whether or not I'm familiar with a particular fandom, or anything else yandere related, go right ahead and ask me!
(Also, like the 2nd in my name suggests, this is a second blog I made specifically for yandere writing! If you want to check out my personal blog where I talk about all the cringe things I'm interested in and about whatever else is on my mind that day, my username is pastelvelvett!)
Now that we have that out of the way...
~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~
What are you waiting for? Take a bite, whatever catches your pretty little eye. ♡
~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~
~<>Menu<>~
♡ Bitter Indulgence: How can love be so bitter? This cake's taste is definitely an aquired one. While some consider the flavor unpleasant and overly intense, others appreciate its complexity and find eating it to be an interesting experiance. The interplay of sweet and bitter can become addicting, if you let it. Imagine bitter black velvet layers, between each of which being a mouth-wateringly sweet cherry jam of such a beautiful, vivid color.
The works listed here are more focused on drama and are more likely to include emotionally distressing themes. This doesn't mean that every story in this category is extremely depressing and/or disturbing, there's tiers to it! (And with every post there will be trigger warnings in the tags, so make sure to check them to see what's specifically kinda fucked about the one you're about to read)
Mild: ●○○
• Harper - OC introduction
Medium: ●●○
• Martin (rf5) - Yandere x reader
Intense: ●●●
(Works to be added!)
♡ Fluffy Treat: This love is a home you'd never wish to leave. Everyone needs a bit of comfort every now and again, and this cake is here to give you just that! Its simple, sweet flavor is a familiar one, one that sends you back to a time in your life when you were far more carefree and happy. And in that state of mind, you lose yourself in your want for comfort, forgetting that something feeling good doesn't necessarily mean it is healthy. Imagine a confetti cake, with colorful, uplifting sprinkles baked into the batter and a hint of vanilla essence packed in every bite. The sweet frosting on top is reminiscent of a soft, fluffy cloud.
Works listed in this category are meant to be comforting and comfortable, so they're far less likely to include more triggering elements. These are the kinds of things you'd read to relax after a long, stressful day, when you feel like you already have enough to think about so you don't really need the fanfiction you read to put you on an emotional rollercoaster of its own. This, of course, doesn't mean that they can't be disturbing at all, just that the disturbing elements that are in here are pretty much par for the course when it comes to yandere fics. Trigger warnings will still be included for each fic, but because these never get too crazy, there isn't really any need for an intensity rating.
• Yandere!Harvey (sdv) x Sick!Reader
♡ In between
• Harper (OC) - Yandere!Honor Student x Shy!Reader

SPIRITBOX ON BROADENING METAL, NEW MUSIC, HARSH FINANCIAL REALITY OF BEING A BAND
Courtney LaPlante: "I've been gambling my whole life in hopes this pays off"
Courtney Laplante's nightmare would be screaming one of Spiritbox's alt-metal songs in front of judge Simon Cowell and the crowd of normies at America's Got Talent. And yet last summer, Cowell, along with millions of viewers across America, was dramatically introduced to the intense sounds of Spiritbox — as LaPlante tuned in and cheered.
So how — in the infancy of their career, and after only one album — did this Canadian band from a small island in Victoria, British Columbia, manage to enter the small pantheon of metal acts who have had their mainstream crossover moment? And why was LaPlante so happy about it? It all began with a young girl's scream.
It was a Saturday in June 2022, the day America's Got Talent was due to air, and the day the world would witness the young screamer in question — 10-year-old Harper Jerret from Somerset, England — assault Cowell and the judges with her performance of Spiritbox's breakout hit "Holy Roller."
Everything appeared to align, like it was fated. LaPlante had previously befriended Jerret after discovering her on Instagram, and — on the exact night of the broadcast — Jerret found herself joining Spiritbox at their sold-out show in London to perform the very same banger from her AGT audition. As Jerret walked onstage, LaPlante imagined herself at that age: a timid child, years from realizing her identity as an artist, almost a decade out from finding her scream. "At her age I was just like, 'I love horses so much, they're so sick' and 'I wish Space Jam was real'," says the singer in her typically self-deprecating manner. (LaPlante is also prone to laughing at herself, which she does frequently, and infectiously, throughout our Zoom call.) "But I think she's a kid who's a bit ahead of the other kids, emotionally, because she's able to ask herself: Who am I? I am an artist."
LaPlante was immediately protective of that nascent determination. "Don't go near the front of the stage," she recalls telling Jerret, desperate to keep her safe — to make sure she wouldn't stray, to make sure she wouldn't fall. The duet came off without a hitch, but LaPlante was still a little apprehensive that night. She knew that within hours Jerret's America's Got Talent audition would air — to an audience that she suspected numbered in the metal-hating millions. LaPlante, quite sensibly, didn't trust Simon Cowell. She didn't trust the normies. She was expecting the worst.
Alongside her husband and bandmate Mike Stringer, LaPlante headed to her hotel room. They braced themselves for the audition and were pre-pared to talk shit about the judges. "We were ready to defend … like, 'Fuck you, Simon Cowell!'" she says. "Because we only have our own experience with normal culture and how they interact with what we do." Instead, as Jerret's performance unfolded, LaPlante watched with amazement as the judges' initial, terrified awe relaxed into total admiration.
"Holy roller sits in the garden we fled/Blood into wine, take my body instead," Jerret enunciated like a tiny Shakespearean thespian, before launching into a LaPlante-worthy scream that was all animal, that obliterated all boundaries of primetime decorum. A standing ovation. A thumbs up from Simon Cowell. Three yeses. LaPlante cheered for Jerret — and then sat up and took note. This is what happens when you don't take away a little girl's freedom to scream. This is what happens when you imagine the world as a stage from which to shout unashamed.
"It was amazing to see that girls can make this kind of music," Jerret recently told Revolver of first discovering LaPlante's performance on "Holy Roller," which her stepfather had introduced her to around the time Spiritbox released their 2021 full-length debut, Eternal Blue. "I was really inspired by Courtney to start screaming and making my own music." The song was Jerret's introduction to metal, her gateway into the genre. "Holy Roller" has now become, for an increasing number of kids across the world, their gateway, too.
It was a surreal moment that garlanded one of the most rapid ascensions in recent metal history. Watchful eyes have been placed on Spiritbox ever since their inception in 2017. But it wasn't until July 2020 — when they released "Holy Roller," the first single from Eternal Blue — that they turned from a niche one-to-watch act to one of metal's most exciting new prospects. They soon secured a No. 1 spot on SiriusXM's Liquid Metal radio station as well as a significant, devoted fanbase — and for good reasons. Spiritbox were expanding the genre in both sound and scope, incorporating djent blasts and industrial breakbeats into hypnagogic dreamscapes while broadening metal's emotional range beyond brazen anguish and rage.
On this point, LaPlante is especially passionate. "I feel like we're one of the only remaining genres that has to be so binary in what the music is about and how the music makes you feel," she says. "Other music has a wide scope: songs about partying, songs about heartbreak, songs about being angry, songs about feeling depressed, songs about feeling happy. [Metal] is a broad genre, but a lot of it feels like it's on autopilot."
If the success of "Holy Roller" wasn't enough of a tell, by the time Eternal Blue dropped in September 2021 it was crystal clear: Spiritbox were on the rise — and steering their own plane. The record debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard 200, marking that year's highest-charting release for the genre at that point. Incessant, relentless touring followed, as they supported many of hard rock's legacy acts and gained swathes of new fans from devotees of Ghost, Underoath, Bring Me the Horizon, even Limp Bizkit. Every metric and data point suggest it: Spiritbox are big. Their influence has both pushed the genre forward and opened it up to a new generation. All at once, everything has changed — and yet everything still remains the same. This is Spiritbox's strange new reality.
When LaPlante logs into our video call, the singer is once again sitting in front of the exact same setup from which I interviewed her for a Revolver "Uprising" profile just over two years ago. A weak-tea-colored wall is behind her, precariously nailed to which is a black-and-purple Spiritbox poster that she and Stringer designed together over five years ago. But some things are different: A few empty moving boxes can be seen in the background — as soon, the band will be splitting their time between Victoria and Los Angeles. It's purely a business decision; the cost of an apartment is cheaper than all the hotel stays they've splurged on while travelling down to California to record. "When I go away from my island, go to L.A., Michael and I get very shocked," she says. "It's absolutely bizarre for us. I think being here has kind of protected us, sheltered us. It's a literal and figurative island for us."
Again: everything is changing and yet everything remains the same. LaPlante and Stringer still work the same data-entry job they were at before Spiritbox took off. Well, sort of. "Work" is putting it generously. Although they are still, technically, employees of the company, LaPlante's forgotten her log-in password, which means she can't make a formal resignation even if she wanted to — and neither of them have worked a shift there in over two years. "It's kind of sick and twisted that I haven't quit. I think it's a weird motivating thing," says LaPlante. "I keep it because I wanna remind myself that I might very easily have to go back to doing something I don't like, and that it's a huge privilege I get to do something I do like."
LaPlante also reveals that she continues to feel further and further away from the person she was before she was "Courtney LaPlante," leader of Spiritbox and full-time professional musician. This, in her mind, is a dangerous state to be in. She is financially secure for the first time in her adult life, but she considers that security a misnomer. She constantly must remind herself of the professional musician's precarious state. "To other artists who have been around longer: Does that secure feeling ever come to you, or does it feel like this forever?" she wonders. "Because I still feel much closer to my office job than to, like, being in Slipknot."
LaPlante speaks at length about the financial reality of being in a band, a reality that has been romanticized, and that she wishes to demystify. She's long been curious about the ways in which audiences fetishize artists and view them as a pure commodity and not as workers like the rest of us. She considers it one of metal's last remaining taboos.
"I'm 33 and I've been gambling my whole life in hopes that this pays off," says the singer, who prior to forming Spiritbox was, along with Stringer, a member of metalcore outfit Iwrestledabearonce. "But I know the reality ... If people knew how non-lucrative this world is and how little money most bands make, they'd probably be more likely to buy an extra shirt. One time I saw a Reddit thread saying, 'Oh my god these people have jobs?! … They have 700,000 monthly listeners.' And I was like, that's not paying anyone's bills."
For the sake of her fans, her dreams, her bank account — LaPlante is focused on making sure that Spiritbox are continually scaling up, thinking bigger. She owes it to herself. For the entirety of her adult life, up until now, LaPlante has been looked at as though she's been in a perpetual state of delusion. "For over 10 years, I've been pursuing this crazy dream," she says. "And whether people supported it or not, they didn't really understand — because it's such a strange thing to want to do. Like, 'Why are you spending all your money recording songs that no one wants to hear?' It's hard to explain to people because it is extremely irrational. When you say it out loud, you're like, Yeah, why am I doing this? Am I insane?"
Turns out the dream wasn't so crazy after all. Courtney LaPlante, certified not insane. The sold-out shows for Spiritbox's upcoming headlining tour, alone, prove that. For the first half of this year — and for the first time ever — Spiritbox won't be playing within the parameters of another band. This is their live show, their production. "We really wanna ramp it up, invest in it, blow everyone's minds. I want everyone to walk away saying, 'I wanna see that band again — and in a bigger place.' That's my dream. Now I'm like, OK, how am I gonna impress these people?"
Performing is LaPlante's stimulant, though it's not without its occasional comedowns. Having played only a little over a hundred shows, she's yet to get into her groove. Every night is a test. "I still have a lot to learn about performing. The whole time I'm thinking, How's Michael doing? Is his guitar sounding good? OK, that light worked. This part worked," she says. "It's weird; it's like that combined with an out-of-body experience. Meanwhile, I'm singing about being depressed. Most of my songs are about me having dark feelings and my struggle with depression and just feeling all the strong feelings I've had throughout my life. It's both extremely emotionally therapeutic and also literally performative at the same time."
If 2022 whipped them into becoming a good band, 2023 will be the year that ensures Spiritbox's enduring greatness. "I'm really excited, but it is gonna be really hard," says LaPlante. "We love to sabotage ourselves. So we're like, Hey, let's throw in writing new music, too — and hopefully we'll get some new music out in the first half of the year. After that we're gonna hibernate and hopefully write an album. That's the goal. Crazy first half of the year, pretty chill second half."
Spiritbox began writing new material in November of last year. "Now we have to figure out when do we show you the songs? Do we show you in March? Do we show you in September? Or do we wait until 2024? I don't know." Sooner sounds more likely than later. LaPlante hates sitting on new music. "We wrote this music because we really wanna share it with you," she says. "It made us feel a certain way and we wanna see if it makes you feel a certain way, too."
Still, the songs keep piling up. LaPlante doesn't reveal much about the new music, not out of preciousness, but simply because she's yet to find the right words to describe it. She mentions repeated phrases and themes throughout the songs: mental prisons, body horror, visual illusions, disillusionment — all material she believes she could fit into a concept album or EP. "To me, all these songs are one big song lyrically and thematically," she says. "If everything aligns and we feel really strongly that everything hits exactly how we want — the art and the music and the whole thing around it — we'll want to put this out as soon as possible. If we do our job right, then we will."
Carrying that young girl's yell of fearlessness with her, LaPlante is pushing both herself and an entire genre forward.

what is going on in animal jam
I log in today and Greely is gone??? why???
and this 'lightside-darkside' thing was apparently a vote this whole time? I didn't even realise...when was it a vote???
I was barely present during the event so I don't know what the hell is happening
also what are the implications for people in Greely-aligned packs??? do they just lose their packs or are the given the choice to align themselves with a different alpha? will someone fill his place? Juno, perhaps? They are also a wolf, after all (arctic wolves are just a subspecies of grey wolves)
Perhaps a minor alpha will be dredged from the depths of AJC lore to fill the role - crossing my fingers for Harper if this is the case, however if this happened I would wager that it would be Sophia the Fox Alpha, as Foxes are also canines and can be bought for gems in AJPW instead of koalas (why). This is unlikely...I mean, they could bring back Tavie, but I find this even more unlikely considering they'd have to bring the underwater realms to AJPW.
just rambling lol animal jam makes me feel a certain kind of way
EDIT: so sorry jamblr, Sophia is the Horse Alpha, Amelia is the Fox Alpha, my mistake :')

That's my signal! What if I told you... There's a TTRPG for That!
THEME: Fish Games
Lobsters and Feelings, by Kreutz-Landry Games.
You are a group of sea creatures! You’re the best, brightest and moistest organisms this side of the Pacific. Nothing can stop you when you put your minds to it, except all the things that might!
Lobsters & Feelings is a quick to pick up, silly game of sea creatures having over the top adventures. Built from Lasers & Feelings by John Harper, it's a great game for a one-shot.
We put the "eel" in Feelings!
This is a pretty standard Lasers and Feelings hack - two stats with two numbers, and a number of character descriptors that give you direction and flavour. There’s a quick roll-table with prompts for a mission and some quick directions for a GM. It’s beautifully simplistic and the easiest thing to pick up and run for folks who are familiar with the quick and quirky style of these games.
You are Fish, What Do You Do?, by Z Gosck.
You Are Fish, What Do You Do? (YAF,WDYD? For short) is a collaborative storytelling game. Unlike more traditional role-playing games, You Are Fish, What Do You Do? does not provide players with a predefined story or a goal: the goal of the game is to create the story. Each player has a hand in creating the world around them and the story as it unfolds, meanwhile the editor takes the player’s ideas and tries to hold them together into a somewhat cohesive story.
YAF,WDYD? is specifically designed to be easy to learn and easily accessible for even first-time players and game-masters.
The design of the game looks to be a great match for GMs who want to run a game but are nervous about the expectations of an entirely planned-out plot that they feel they have to build beforehand. It might also be a great step for groups who are interested in running more GM-less games, but need a stepping-stone that gradually hands narrative control over to the players. However, since it doesn’t inherently provide an inherent goal for the table, I’d recommend drawing inspiration from some of the other games on this list if you check this one out!
Attorneys at Jaw, by potatocubed.
You're recent graduates from law school with nice suits, a gleaming vision of making the world a better place, and uncountable quantities of debt. You're also literal, actual sharks.
This is a tabletop roleplaying game for 4-6 players, created as part of the 2k19 Felonious Fauna jam, inspired by various games which combine animals and criminality.
If you like animals and puns, you’re likely going to get a kick out of this game. It’s a great fit for a table that likes to meet in person, because it comes with little paper minis that you can colour in and use at your table!
Fishblade: Troubled Waters, by Joe Kiewra.
Fish Blade - Troubled Waters is a semi-cooperative TTRPG about several fish who are sent on a mission of the utmost importance from the Queen of the Ocean. However not all is well under the sea; much more is going on beneath the surface in the Queen’s undersea court. Alliances may shift like the tides. Treachery and deceit lurk in the party as these fish form an uneasy alliance while pursuing their own agendas. Will your group be able to complete their mission?
For a game that was slapped together for a funky game jam, the 10 pages of Troubled Waters is pretty solid. Players are all fish with blades, going on missions for the Queen of the Sea - while also pursuing their own, secret agendas. There are 6 stats, increased using a point-buy system, and you’ll be rolling different-sided dice in skill checks - pretty standard for a ttrpg, all things considered. This is a game that has a lot of very familiar elements of classic games: what I think makes it stand out the most is the secret agendas that each player will bring to the table.
This game is also not the only Fisblade game - there’s a whole bunch of them, varying in length and style! For the full gamut of Fish-and-Blade related games, you can check out the Fishblade 2023 Game Jam, cobbled together and run in reaction to this tweet.
Games I’ve Recommended in the Past
Jellyfish Felonies, by Penguin King Games.
Crustacean Bus Station, by Kumada1.
Spin the Fishblade, by Marshall Bradshaw.

"That Really Happened?!" DC Comics Tournament
The Bracket
Groupings
We had 48 entries, which does not split evenly into a geometric sequence (2, 4, 8, 16), but it does split nicely if we break it up into groups of three first. So instead of a bracket with a left and right side, we will have a three-way bracket, where the finalists from groups A, B and C will all go head to head with each other round-robin style.
Seeding
In the poll that went up yesterday, I asked for feedback on seeding preferences. Interestingly, most people voted for grouping similar content, followed closely by random. Some people favored traditional seeding, and very few wanted to see the most popular go head to head early on. Personally I'm not a fan of random since it really unbalances things, but boy would it have been easier than what I've been doing! So here's what I did for our current tournament.
I've hand paired all 48 entries to match similar ones, or ones that I felt had an interesting hook between them. Next I created three different full brackets using these initial pairings so I could compare them. One was completely hand seeded, further grouping sets of matches together. Another took all the initial pairings and put them in traditional sort order using number of notes to indicate popularity (slightly unbalanced bc posts vary in age). And for the last, I took the initial pairings and randomized them with a few manual tweaks to distribute the most popular. All three of these approaches have pros and cons, which made it a tough choice, and in the end we are going with the fully hand seeded bracket. Not every entry had an obvious match, but I hope this will make the tournament compelling!
Schedule
Since we have three arms of the bracket, expect three polls to go up every day until the round is over. Each poll will last for the full seven days. We may or may not take time between rounds. The first round starts tomorrow!
