Update on the state of things

Okay, soooo my plan to get back on schedule with Heart of Chaos is not panning out well. I knew I would have fewer off hours now that there's a newborn in the mix, and while my new niece is a good eater and sleeper and has a really good temperament, it's still a learning curve. So while I'm still invested in fandom content, my rate of drawing, answering asks, and even playing videogames that require too much focus or energy has slowed down immensely.

I'm still working on Heart of Chaos (and a few extra things here and there) but I just wanted to give you guys a heads up that productivity is going to be low for a while. But I'm still here, lurking and such.

here are my favorite video essays on games, in no particular order. these are not """analysis""" videos that recap the plot alongside development facts, nor entertainment journalism, nor reviews. these are videos which treat the medium of games as an art form worthy of both casual and academic criticism, sincerely examine narratives, and often acknowledge the real world politics which influence game development and developmental decisions

"In Search of Undersea Wildness in My Octopus Teacher, Abzu, and In Other Waters" and "What Is the Games Industry Missing?" by Pixel A Day. Kat at Pixel A Day is one of the sharpest in this field and these two videos show exactly why, in two very different ways. The former obsesses over both the beauty of oceans and humanity's tendency towards anthropomorphism, while the latter digs personally into the ugliness of both the games and games media industries.

"'Everything is Political' | Institutional Racism in Life is Strange 2" by Game Assist. Game Assist is one of few channels to delve so unflinchingly into intensely politic themes in games, as the title more than implies. From essays on ableism, misogyny, and racism in the Life is Strange series to de/colonization in Assassin's Creed III, they meet games where they are and examine their narratives earnestly while still acknowledging their shortcomings.

"The Most Abused Term in Videogame Criticism" by SolePorpoise. A very interesting exploration of the original "ludonarrative dissonance" essay.

"Prey - A Critique of the Mind Game" by Joseph Anderson. Joseph Anderson is one of the better known game critics, mostly owing to his extraordinarily popular series of videos on From Software's games and his propensity to have opinions. I don't always agree with him, but I find his critiques to be interesting explorations of games which are well-written and with good intent. He often has the effect of making me want to play a game (again) after watching his critiques — even the overwhelmingly negative ones.

"Phyrexia is Hell | A 30-Year History of Magic's Most Sinister Villains" by Rhystic Studies. Covers the design and evolution in design of the cultish and body horrific Phyrexians, some of Magic: The Gathering's most important villains. Rhystic Studies makes some excellent videos on Magic, largely focused on art, and this is my favorite of his.

"Why It's Rude to Suck at Warcraft" and "Minecraft, Sandboxes, and Colonialism" by Folding Ideas. Another big hitter, Folding Ideas' videos on World of Warcraft and Minecraft are two of the better and more academically-minded video essays on games ever made.

"Why I haven't played Hades ⚱" by LambHoot. Probably the most personal essay on here, this one is about the complicated feelings a game like Hades stirs in its Greek Canadian host. This goes largely into contemporary Greek culture and identity and some of Hades' shortcomings regarding it.

"The Problem with Greek Myth Retellings" and "The Endless Reinvention of Greek Mythology" by Kate Alexandra. While not technically about video games, Greek myth's constant presence in games (as seen above) makes them pertinent. A fascinating look at Greek myth retellings/inspiration from someone with clearly deep knowledge and passion for the subject.

"Animal Crossing and the Ideology of Chill" by Yaz Minsky. An examination of what our view of relaxation reveals about our cultures via Animal Crossing: New Horizons. A great expansion on "Minecraft, Sandboxes, and Colonialism."

"The Indigenous Other in Endnight Games' The Forest" by Murley Media. Another more academic essay, this harsh look at The Forest and its racist tropes of Indigenous "savages" is as well-researched as it is cutting.

Happy 4th anniversary Twst!

I can't believe it's been 4 years.... I started playing it when I was Sam's age...now I am ....Vargas's age....

But trust me my interest and passion for Twisted Wonderland started around 2018... When Yana dropped such "a bomb" on her twitter with a Disney collab and a thank you 100k followers sketch with Crewel, Crowley, Trein/Lucius and the Yami no Kagami.... I was doomed when I saw "le fanart" of Malleus rising of a coffin then.... I was like....OMGGG ooohhh monnn dieeuuu....that art Yana-senseiiiii....isn't it Maleficientttt!!! I became such ....such the most platoniiic lover/fan-girl ever of Malleus *staring at him with dead fish eyes and not speaking* My kakkoi dragon fairy, Maleficient grandson!! And I literrally "harassed" my partner in crime @twiwoncrackpopcorn everyday with it, being a 90's baby Disney's fan and Yana-sensei's one too.... I was searching every infos on the internet, every little crumbs about it!! Waiting for the game release....and thanks god during covid-19 I had Animal Crossing New Horizon and...Twisted Wonderland games...(my work as a nurse was.... WASP REVIEW - WASPS (ANIMAL CROSSING)

This one is, while not perfect, pretty accurate, pretty standard! Very clearly a paper wasp from antenna to abdomen, very nice! I've seen the New Horizons model compared to Polistes dominula (Including by Nookipedia) and I was honestly tempted to say the same, however after some searching I'm actually more inclined to say this lady is closer to Polistes jokahamae!

Meanwhile, in City Folk and New Leaf, the model has a closer appearance to the Asian giant hornet, Vespa mandarinia.

Quite the charming model if I do say so myself! However, I do have to deduct some points, as while in the original Japanese version of the games this is apparently referred to with a term representative of hymenopterans in general, until New Horizons the English version referred to this critter as a Bee, which is, obviously, inaccurate.

The menu icons also appear a bit different to the species being represented here, with the City Folk icon looking especially like a honey bee

Now, in Animal Crossing, this species is one of the few species of insect that can actually harm the player, and while you may think I'd be arguing for a more positive representation of the animal here, while I would like if their benefits were put across in the game, the way they do things here is actually a perfectly understandable representation! In fact, the representation of wasps here may be more accurate than the game's representation of tarantulas and scorpions. The wasps here only attack specifically upon being provoked, when you shake the tree and the nest falls out, which I do think would in fact cause a nest of wasps to become quite agitated!

The museum curator of the Animal Crossing franchise, Blathers, also makes quite the fuss about wasps, however, he does this for quite literally any arthropod you present to him! While his comment in New Horizons could be worded better, it's fairly accurate! Blathers states that these paper wasps are aggressive predators, who hunt and eat other insects as well as almost any other kind of meat. This could be made more clear as the adults do not eat the meat themselves, however, it is specifically mentioned at the end of his paragraph that the wasps do in fact bring their prey home to their larva!

Oddly, despite the existence of honey bees as a separate species in New Horizons and the more accurate translation, their nests (Which are fairly accurately representative of Vespid nests, especially Polistes nests) are used in crafting recipes for honey bee related items like the Beekeeper's hive, Honeycomb wall, and Honeycomb flooring (Interestingly enough, the only other recipe it's used in the medicine used to fix stings)

What kinda pisses me off is that it's next to impossible to find any research or other information on the shaders in Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Remember the wobbly dialogue box? That ended up eyeballed. Very well at that, but still.

There seem to be basically four results when I search for ACNH shader information.

A single video showing a recreation of dynamic waves lapping at the beach, to promote the uploader's shader editor for mobile devices. The editor itself appears to use node graphs, but the video only shows the end result.

A single page about how to recreate the rustling of tree leaves. Technically not just a shader thing but I wouldn't want this list to only have three items and it goes pretty in-depth IIRC.

Dozens of tutorials on how to implement the barrel distortion in $ENGINE. Finally, something relevant and actually including code! But that's about the only thing it seems.

Hundreds more videos about AC-style perspective distortion... in Minecraft.

Especially that last one particularly get me.

And forget about lighting.

River is doing a solo stream, she's playing Animal Crossing New Horizons, and trying to customize the terrain, and place items. She'd recently achieved 3 Stars, and unlocked all the terrain customization options. She's setting up a library area that's probably bigger than it needs to be, but still looks nice.

She has K.K. Robot Synth playing from a few stereos placed around her island.

"Oh! Yeah, this reminds me of something!" She exclaimed as she moves a couple book stacks, "Auntie April came to visit! She's in college for journalism, and is pretty busy with the job she's doing for reference if she ever needs it. I heard some places are weird about having experience before you can start, which doesn't always make sense for some jobs."

She goes to craft and customize a couple items, she notices alot of questions about April coming in.

"Oh, Auntie April isn't related to the guys, she's been friends with them for like a decade or so. Basically she's unofficially adopted, and her parents have basically adopted us as well." River has her villager do a Joy reaction.

"Okay, I kinda got off track. The reason this reminded me of April visiting, was because she was telling me about this bookstore, or was it a library?, anyway she found it near her school. It was called 'The Banned Book Resting Place', it's a place were you can find all of these books that were banned from schools, libraries, and maybe some stores, and it has these labels that tell you why they were banned, when they were banned and in some cases who got it banned!" Her eyes are sparkling as she says this, very happy to be talking about this, her tail is wagging fast. "Not that banning books is a good thing, I just find the idea of this place amazing, plus they have a history section of when and why book banning started."

She takes a pause to move some furniture to see if it's to close to the cliff. Then continues with the info dump.

"Though there are some books in glass cases labeled 'Banned for a Good Reason' that were banned because they were mostly manifestos that were ment to manipulate the Reader. I won't go into to much detail, but those are just displays for educational purposes." She's swaying as she explains this. "I wish I could go there, but April says I might be taken by the tech club to try figuring out how my AI works. So no visit to the Banned Book place for me." She imitates a sighing motion, "Maybe one day I'll get to visit this place."

She turns to read chat. And seems to freeze up a bit.

"WHY ARE YOU ASKING ME IF MY AUNT IS HOT OR SINGLE!?!?!?" She tells as loud as she can. " SHE'S MY AUNT!! PLUS I THINK SHE'S DATING SOMEONE!!!!" River continues to yell because her volume got stuck out of shock. "DAD! I WANT TO TAKE A BREAK! AND I CAN'T LOWER MY VOICE PLEASE HELP!!!!!"

The stream is switched to the technical difficulties image, but Shelldon comes out to use the chat box as target practice to get back at those who freaked out his sister.

I did try to search for a banned book store, and only found a small online business, and a book called The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks that looks interesting.
