New Fear

I have been on tumblr a long time. A looooong time. Far longer than I should have been, really.

And I've been arguing with schmucks about birds being dinosaurs... pretty much that whole time. Folks tend to get angry when a dinosaur blog posts birds, after all. It happens.

And while the game of whack a mole is ancient, it's not unpredictable. Usually, it ends in one of two ways:

the person admits they were wrong, and they back down

the person stops arguing with me and blocks me

I'm okay with either one, really. the former is ideal, the latter at least brings me peace.

Never before this past weekend has someone insisted they were right no matter what I say

And this isn't a coincidence.

Over the past few decades, anti-science sentiment has risen worldwide. I mean you just have to look at the COVID19 pandemic, or general reactions to the problems of climate change.

While of course people who think their opinion matters more than evidence have always existed, they have never been quite this bold before.

The idea that the colloquial definition of dinosaur matters, at all, is a completely new idea and one that has no basis in reality.

And yet, multiple people this past weekend argued exactly that.

And it sounds exceptionally similar to the idea that people could pick and choose things about COVID19 to believe, or the general republican position on science (only things that back up their bigotry are true).

It really seems to reflect a general increase in anti science sentiment and public anti-intellectualism.

Reality isn't actually up for debate. Reality isn't actually subjective. And science is the measure of reality

This isn't the same as the biases of society impacting science and making it worse. Saying "what people think is more important than science" is not the same as saying "science forgot a very important variable / factor / to consider data gained by different cultures / to have a wide variety of perspectives/ etc."

And allowing people to continue to perpetuate and believe in delusions leads directly to the spread of misinformation, leading to more people not understanding reality, and so on

This matters because reality matters. Because the reality of our world is not something we can change or escape. And, in fact, us ignoring the reality of the world - like thinking we can have infinite growth on a finite planet - is directly leading to the destruction of that world (climate change).

I am terrified of the rise of anti-science sentiment. I am terrified of the rise of cherry picking, deciding reality is what you want it to be, ignoring evidence. We see this from purely scientific topics all the way to social justice (how much of racism is ignoring the evidence of a) race being a social construct and b) how much racism impacts people's lives? Almost all of it).

This is bigger than birds being dinosaurs or evolution or climate change. This is about our society going on a deeply disturbing and self-destructive path.

And I really don't know what to do about it.

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?):

He loves getting you flowers and trinkets he sees that you would like. He’s also very physically affectionate, he always has his tail curled around you or your hand/arm for comfort.

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?):

As a best friend he’s like the (adorably) annoying little brother. He loves to play pranks on you/on others with you.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?):

He’s a BIG cuddler! He’s soft too, like a little fleece blanket, and he knows you love to snuggle because of it.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?):

He wants to settle down for sure but also it scares him. He’s always wanted to have a family and a big wedding that all his friends would go to.

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?):

He would make sure they knew he still very much loved them but that they need time apart, whether that be permanently or temporarily.

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?):

He would want commitment, he’s a traditional catholic man after all! He would have a very intimate proposal but he would want to get married fairly quick, maybe after a year or so.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?):

A very gentle man, both physically and emotionally. He loves to be physically affectionate and vulnerable with his partner.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?):

He gives such good hugs. They’re firm and loving and he always feels like a huge plushie come to life because of his fur.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?):

He says it first and fast, almost like he couldn’t stop himself from saying it. It comes out all at once and he stares at his partner in shock.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?):

He doesn’t get TOO jealous but when he does he makes sure to be EXTRA physically affectionate.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?):

Soft and gentle kisses, very much loving and silly sometimes.

L = Little ones (How are they around children?):

He loves children, he’s amazing with them and he wants some of his own someday.

He’s an early bird, he likes to get up and make his partner breakfast.

He would remember EVERYTHING. He remembers your favorite flower, your usual meal at a restaurant and even all of your allergies!

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?):

Either when he proposes or your wedding for sure. He’s a big softie, he loves all your lovey moments.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?):

He’s very protective but in a lowkey way. He’ll protect your honor but he knows you can handle yourself most times.

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?):

He tries so hard. He’s very detail oriented and he likes to make sure everything is perfect, even if its something as simple as getting you the right ice cream.

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?):

He can be self depreciating sometimes. He doesn’t think he should be with his partner because of “his nature” but he knows his partner loves him no matter what.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?):

He used to be very shy and concerned about being blue but he likes it a lot more now that he has people around him to make him feel better.

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?):

Very, his significant other is his other half through and through and he makes sure its known.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.):

He purrs like a cat when he’s happy/asleep/cozy.

His tail is extra sensitive to touch (not sure if thats actually canon, im awful at remembering)

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

He would hate if someone judged him or tried to convert him from his beliefs. He accepts all walks of life and he wouldn’t ever change someone else so if someone tried to make him forsake his religion it’d be a no-go.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?):

He sometimes curls up in a ball or sleeps hanging from the ceiling. He also, again, purrs in his sleep so sometimes his partner wakes up to motor sounds and its just Kurt being cute again.

Pokemon S/V Redesigns! I made these redesigns 2 years ago and I totally forgot to share them here. There's a few specific Pokemon that I REALLY do not like, so I thought I'd put my own take on them. Note: obviously you don't have to like these, these are what I would have liked from these specific Pokemon, it's totally fine if you like the original designs.

First we have my redesign of Flamigo. -looks angrier to reflect the fighting type and darkened areas for more contrast. -added chunks of salt rock to the legs to reference when baby flamingos stand in salt water and salt accumulates around their legs. main reason for this is because i thought it'd be interesting to give flamigo and naclstack a symbiotic relationship (flamigo scout out potential prey for naclstack because they are slow moving, in return flamigo get their sodium and use the salt rock legs as weapons) -round house kicking flamingo? yes please.

Next we have my redesign of Skeledirge. -incorporated skeleton and pinata elements into the design to add more colour and visual interest -body is mostly black to better reflect the ghost type -adjusted the proportions to make it look less awkward and less rectangular? -made the little fire bird more of a prominent feature in the design since I thought it was cute but not used enough in the og design

Finally, this is more like my own singular evolution for Pawmi. Meet Brawlmi. -I really really really dislike Pawmi's evolution line, so if I had it my way, I would scrap Pawmo and Pawmot and have Pawmi evolve into this instead. -played more into the fighting themes and made it more obvious by adding the red on the poofy fist sleeve things, angry expression, jagged patterns and plaster shaped cheeks. -brown spot over eye resembles a black eye and overall i wanted Brawlmi to look like a little rough fighter kid. -brawlmi= brawl me. if that wasn't obvious.

But essentially, with the walled garden of the app store and the average android user never installing apks from anywhere except the play store (and the costs involved in registering for those), and the poor long term backwards compatibility of smartphones, mobile game/program development outside particular niche, mostly android-exclusive spheres naturally is bent towards a single program generating recurring expenses which in turn leads to trying to obtain recurring payment from the userbase...

um which is often undesirable for the end user XD

Riddle: Shaymin

Shaymin is a hedgehog and since Riddle is the grass gym leader in my au it just worked the best. Imagine it's flower is a rose though. (He probably wouldn't use it for the gym that's too op)

Ace: Scorbunny

I needed a lil rascal for Ace and Scorbunny gives such Ace vibes.

Deuce: Buneary

After the bunny event (can't remember the name of it for the life of me) I had to give him a bunny pokemon. I also wanted it to be a duo with Ace's ace. (tehehe ace and ace) For all you Adeuce-ers I have a drawing vision I'll create one day.

Cater: Ditto

Identity issues. I picture Ditto approaching Cater as Cater and he assumed it was a clone for the longest time. Ofc until he tried making it disappear and it didn't work.

Trey: Chansey

He's like the big brother of the group so I thought Chansey was perfect.

Savanaclaw

I didn't wanna just base them off of their species since I was going to give them Pokemon Beastman types instead. (For example Leona is a Pyroar Beastman)

Leona: Lucario

I wanted a fighting type since he's the fighting gym leader. So when I was playing Legends Arceus and stumbled upon an alpha Lucario I knew it had to be. (Dunno how much it fits tho tbh)

Ruggie: Timburr

I needed a lil rascal for him. Someone who could snag something and run off. Also preferably a fighting type. Timburr fits the profile.

Jack: Lycanroc

He turns into a wolf...this one had to be a wolf. I wanted one that didn't give intimidating vibes and Lycanroc was my best bet. I feel like it's a very loyal pokemon and from what I know Jack is decently loyal. (I'm sorry I don't know much about Jackypoo)

Octavinelle

Azul: Grapploct

I know I said I didn't wanna go species based, but tbh it was either this or Vaporeon and I feel like I could find more similarities with these two. It's pre-evolution is a small little guy who works it's way up to it's strong version, similar to Azul working hard to become the successful man- teen he is today.

I needed something to pair with Floyd and just going for the eels felt too easy. Lapras has this elegance that Jade has so I thought it'd work

Floyd: Gyrados

(did I spell that wrong?) He totally caught a Magikarp when he was younger because he thought it looked funny then kept it. Look at it now!!

I wanted an angry looking pokemon to contradict his friendly optimistic-ness. + elephant. He rides an elephant in Chapter/Book 4.

Almost went with PorygonZ but he likes kitties and as the electric type gym leader I had to go with Luxray. Lions are cats!!

Come on... Do I have to explain? Oh wait non-pokemon fans might be reading this, yes I do. Rotom can travel between devices and sometimes even the players Pokedex. (Encyclopedia of Pokemon) (Sun/Moon for example)

Diasomnia

Malleus: Meowstick♂️

Everyone keeps giving him a super op team full of legend/psuedo-legendary dragon types but instead I made him part Dialga (basically the god of time) so I could excuse it.

I can't see him getting many pokemon, most escaping their balls and leaving Mal down. But this Meowstick lives in his castle. He wanted to befriend it but it was really stubborn. Eventually they became comrades tho!!

Silver: Swablu

He needs an Altaria. It's a cloud bird (technically dragon but shhhh)‼️‼️Swablu doesn't evolve until level 50 though and he's still young so he needs to wait.

Sebek: Pom-Pom Oricorio

I LOVE HIS DYNAMIC WITH ORICORIO!! I picked it because it was an electric cheerleader and he's always idolizing Mal but there's lore origins

Sebek found Oricorio when he was younger and out playing with Silver. It was injured and about to faint (Pokemon's equivalent to dying) Silver insisted on rushing it home and having Lilia help save it. Sebek carried it all the way there and it grew attached to him.

I can see Baul having issues with him having a non-evolving Pokemon but give it time, it'll prove it can be strong

Lilia: Sneasler

Come on...Look at them.

Sneasler is a Hisui exclusive actually, and Hisui is Sinnoh in the 1700s-ish. It also looks like it could be a soldier, look at it. Amazing. Perfect. I love Sneasler.

Extra: (You'll have to look these up yourself)

Crowley: Haunchcrow, it's in the name, it's a crow.

Crewel: Furfrou, dog you get to stylize, perfect fit

Vargas: Machamp (please say I didn't mix it up, the fully evolved one) Human like muscle pokemon absolutely perfect.

Trein: Lucius, Lucius is a pokemon in my au. shush it's just a rare species

Sam: Dusknoir, skull ghost type. Perfect for Sammypoo.

So that concludes all their aces. Funsies!! I'm back in my Pokemon hyperfix so I'm brainrotting. This was one of many...

I have everything planned out but the lore doc only contains up to Scarabia's arc rn. (But still ask about anything I literally have most of it planned)

The Pokemon au focuses on Yuu, who gets sent to the TWST region (shush ik not creative) by Arceus (Pokemon God). Professor Crowley finds poor Yuu and offers to help them home, if they complete the Pokedex. (I had to type that out 4 times I kept accidentally deleting it)

TF2 X Pokémon AU Remake: Mercs’s Pokémon Team

Last month in April, I did pick random Pokémon for Scout, Heavy, and Pyro of their Pokémon team. So, I decided to re-do pick some random Pokémon of Mercs’s Pokémon team, starting from Offensive, then Defensive, and finally Support class. Let’s begin with the Offensive class, shall we?

Let’s start with this bunny boy.

Scout/Jeremy’s Pokémon Team

Eevee; was his first partner on his 13th birthday by his mother and seven older brothers as a gift.

Clodsire (Shiny); Scout caught his first shiny Pokémon as (Paldean) Wooper before it evolved.

Miltank; Scout made the wild aggressive milk cow Pokémon tame her after saving the Engineer from being attacked, and named her Willow. After a short while, it was discovered that her previous trainer abandoned her in the middle of a forest full of wild Pokémon. That’s why she was angry, depressed, and lonely.

Raichu (Alolan Form); Scout got a gift from one of his seven older brothers to give him a Pikachu, before evolving into Raichu in Alolan form.

Wooloo (Shiny); Scout caught Wooloo and yet again, a shiny Pokémon as a stray before he took Wooloo back to Tavish, the Demoman, because he and his family own a farm with a lot of Wooloo. However, the Demoman told him that he knew this Wooloo, but it wasn’t their shiny Wooloo and other Wooloos were kept isolated.

Altaria/Lopunny

Now, before moving to Soldier’s Pokémon team. I just want you to be honest with me because all nine of them must have their Eevelutions as their first partner like Jeremy, the Scout, Eevee as his first partner, and even mega evolution Pokémon. For the mercs' team, I tried to choose some random Pokémon.

I have finally done all nine of Merc's characters and their Pokémon team and did my pick of some random Pokémon, even mega evolutions. I hope you all like Tf2 Merc's Pokémon team, also no, I can’t make a story of TF2 x Pokémon AU because it is too much work for me, even if I sometimes have writer's block. No, I didn't play the Pokémon game. Although I do play an app puzzle game, I suddenly got tired of it and got too busy with something else.

Equivalence AU Mabel ideas!

I wanted to experiment with God!zar(?) Mabel, bc I hadn’t seen any designs for it yet. I was also going to try drawing Mabel in her super-demon-y form, (which is apparently blinding white with abyss for eyes and tiny burning pupils) but was two invested in the outfit to really lean into it.

Now for some of my headcannons!

While drawing Mabel, I started thinking about her bird wings, and what kind of traits she might have similar to animals (like dipper and cats) and then it hit me. BIRDS.

An entire class of animals characterized by their ability to DEFY GRAVITY FOR HOURS TO DAYS AT A TIME. (And the ones that don’t are pretty cool too) and I got to thinking about how cool birds are, to achieve this through nothing but MILLIONS of years of evolution. (My thoughts on this are not very organized, but I hope you get the gist.) so anyway, what cool things do birds do, and wouldn’t it be cool if Mabel did them too?

Mating dance. Since it’s pretty much canon that Mizar is still alloromantic and allosexual, wouldn’t it be goofy if she would do a funky little dance when trying to ask people out? (She definitely did this for Henry as soon as she was corporeal for him)

Roosting. Basically making nests in high places out of things she likes, probably perches in it to preen her feathers. (I originally had a similar hc for Alcor, but whatever, they’re demons. But maybe he roosts like a bat instead:) )

Preening. She has a set of ridges under her lip (in front of her gums) for preening her feathers. Her loved ones have little tools to mimic them, and help her get hard-to-reach places. (She often falls asleep during this, similar to Dipper with his hair.)

Migration. I’m still not super organized with this one, but she might try to take off during the winter for long periods of time before coming back, or maybe just circling around to get out energy. Either that or she just tells people that she’s flying south for the winter when she doesn’t want to hang out with them. (This was also a hc meant for Dipper, but now I’m wondering if he tries to hibernate during winter.)

So those were my Equivalence AU headcannons, now for the design choices I made!

I talked a little bit about them at the start, but I still want to talk about it so, here we go!

The fashion was all based on @that-ghosts-art / @that-ghost-pal ‘s Mabel/Mizar designs, and I was very happy for the chance to test out different fashion styles, as well as the braid and shifting tattoos. (For the tattoos I just drew whatever I felt like at the time, and I added a scorpion barb at the end of the braid just for fun.) I added gold-tipped feathers to the wings, and some extra pink bits in her eyes (except for the angry one) I also gave her a crown instead of a top hat.

For God!zar(?) I tried to give her wings a more feather-y feeling than God!cor’s, and made the chest star more like her symbol on the cipher wheel. I muted the colors, and messed with her crown bc God!cor’s hat is a halo, and I didn’t want to copy that directly. I struggled with the hair color for a while before deciding to just bite the bullet, so please excuse any eye scorching color choices (It was originally planned for galaxy hair, but that was given to the wings, and I’m not great with overlapping colors)

Centiskorch Facts

-The scientific name for Centiskorch is "Centanguis Ignus." Centanguis is a combination of 'Centum' meaning 100, and 'anguis' meaning snake/serpent. The rough translation for this is "Hundred-serpent flame"

-Centiskorch become a lot more aggressive after evolution, which can be a big change from Sizzelpede

-Centiskorch are actually very good mothers and, unlike most bug types, will stick around to protect their eggs and raise their young. They'll make a burrow underground and wrap their bodies around the eggs to keep them warm

-Centiskorch are arthropods, making then related to pokemon like Galvantula, Ariados, and Krabby. Their closest relative is scolipede

-Because of their flammable bodies, Centiskorch are often used for cooking in high class restuaraunts

-Unlike many other bug types, their blood is a medium orange color instead of white or red

-The only thing that Centiskorch truly fears is water, as they have to burn all their gasses to keep become dry again, which leaves them temporarily unable to hunt

The reason we can have fun with Linnean classification terms is because they were all defined solely on living taxa. Linneaus created his system based on a snapshot in time - modern time, specifically - and, as such, the boxes he made to define life were not made with extinct organisms in mind. The more we find out about extinct organisms, the more we see these categories fail to work outside of our current timeframe. This is why paleontologists and other cladists are so bent on getting rid of Linneaus altogether - it no longer works. But, while people insist on using his shit, we get to have fun deciding what arbitrary point to put certain groups in the phylogenetic tree.

So, yeah. It's a knowledge of evolution and deep time that has rendered words like fish, bacteria, amphibian, gymnosperm, reptile, invertebrate, mammal, crustacean, and bird somewhat useless. But that's all in the fun!
