Haha, my curious and lonely ass really thought it was a clever idea to read 'eddsworld x reader' content because it spawned in my timeline.... thinking that maaaybe they actually got good at it and made not too ooc stuff (this is heeeeaavily on matt content)

Now, i am profoundly remorseful of that choice because when i wrote this hours ago woth no wifi, i was arguing with the air.

Like, i won't lie on this. EW x reader.. They have evolved, a loooot since those 2017 fanfics (why were the x yn fics from eddsworld all copy-paste back then???) actually, it really surprised me because i definitely don't have the most cool memories of such fanfics,, Buuuuut, they still have that STUPID FAVORITISM. IT'S SO DAMN APPARENT. YOU THINK WE CAN'T SEE IT???

i get madder from down this line, especially since i was veery hungry when writing this. That's why you should always stay fed, keeps you slightly happier.

I guess i'm just disappointed,,, all because he just, idk, still feels downright boring compared to how the other 3 are written in these kind of fanfics even thought it's 2024 already and not still 2017-2020 (don't even get me started on the weird fixation on making yn extremely specific which fr also makes me crawl away like a wet cat from EW reader interactive content, they don't even put tags of the gender, aaaaaargh).

y'all definitely have more content of him to write than just the saturation of him painting your nails, or going shopping, or acting like he's the center of the world 24/7, or making him the pure lil' angel, or having his memory issues being downplayed as him acting 'so silly lil' silly', i assure you.

When i tell you i got so invested in this useless anger i mean that i got compelled into writing down a bunch of matt x reader to try and give that man a cooler image,,, and i don't even see him that way (nor any of the characters.) , but GOD ARGHHHV I NEED JUSTICE FOR HIM.

He never understood why you even played those damn games. He always complained when you played your games. Especially when you rage quit.

He always sighs when he hears you yell or bang the table. But he lets you get your anger out. He remembers that when he was a child his father would hit him if he tried to express anger. He didn’t want to be like that. No, he’d be better than that. He would never yell at you and definitely not hit you. It doesn’t change the fact that he finds it very annoying.

He’s downstairs drinking tea and watching the news. He doesn’t seem surprised when he hears the usual bash on the table and he is getting ready to hear screaming. But nothing comes. He waits for a while. Still nothing. He gets a little worried even tho he knows that you wouldn’t just die from playing video games.

Suddenly his mind starts to race. What if you fell over in your chair and hit your head? You could be lying there dead. But no. He crosses that one out. He would’ve heard you fall. He surely doesn’t know what happened to you but he makes it his mission to get to you as soon as possible.

When he enters your room he sees you crouched in your chair. His shoulders drop with relief since he knows you’re not seriously hurt. He straightens up and asks you “Everything all right?” while turning the chair towards him.

The fact that he came to check on you made you feel loved, but the feeling soon disappeared when you remembered why he was here. You had a chunk of your hair in your hand which he noticed almost immediately after he turned your chair around.

You weren’t sad. You were angry. You were angry that you took your hair out because you were angry. Just like you did when you were a kid. You felt stupid. This feeling made the anger turn into soft sadness. Tears fell down your cheeks. “I’m a fucking idiot.”

He understands right away. You told him about it before. That you used to pull your hair out of frustration when you were small. It was an instinct at this point.

He simply lifted you off of your chair and put you in his lap, kissing your irritated head. The spot was barely visible. He let you cry it out. Later he took you to the bathroom to ice the red spot. “Let’s play a game together later, hey?”

To be perfectly honest, I don’t like when people use npd as an excuse to be mean to others. Just like every other disorder, it can explain our actions but it doesn’t excuse them. Obviously I’m not saying to mask all the time, but have some awareness that you affect other people! And this is coming from someone with npd.

At the same time, I don’t like when people act like narcissists have no reason to be mean. When other disorders express anger it’s fine, but suddenly when a narcissist gets angry or acts a little catty they’re evil??? That makes no sense!

🦪 how would this character describe their gender, if asked?

You ask Mats this question entirely innocently, and before you can finish, he has flipped you on your back with his thumb on your jugular vein. The only way to escape this is immediately clarifying that you’ve just been asking everyone in the room by matter of protocol, and even then he might not let you get up for a bit.

Mats performs toxic masculinity so hard you could register it with a geiger counter so calling him anything less masculine than "boy" would probably get you killed. In his defense, though, he is 16 and has not been allowed to be a boy for most of those 16 years and is constantly paranoid about being misgendered, so I think he’s allowed to inflict a bit of violence if he wants to. When he gets older, he settles into himself more and lets down the armor (and the toxic masculine act) somewhat, and becomes more “grumpy man who lives in the house down the street in a movie where the child protagonist needs to enlist his help to save the neighborhood.” He would not describe himself that way, though.

🛡️how does this character protect themself and others?

Mats is always the guy to leap to violence as the answer, and will go at someone for the smallest thing. He’s very good at fighting, having absorbed some combination of his older brother’s martial arts training, getting into street brawls constantly, and also gaining magical anger issues yippee! (OG Mats that I wrote in fifth grade had some unhinged quote about violence which alas I don’t have on me atm, but you have to understand that I’ve actually toned him down in this version even though it sure doesn’t feel like it.) He doesn’t show his love for people very well, but if he does love you, he’ll take people to task for what he perceives as even the slightest insult – even if he’s simultaneously behaving like you’re dirt to him. He is definitely a good person to have on your side if the other option is him being against you, and he’ll certainly (over)protect you, but idk if I can say anything else positive about how he goes about personal relationships for most of the story.

🌫️ how does this character feel about lying?

So, brief geography which might be subject to change, but Mats is from a small continent in the southern hemisphere of this world. He’s from the northern part of the continent (the southernmost part which could be considered “north” but for all intents and purposes he is Northern – this is the part slightly closer to the equator, just for those not used to thinking in this orientation), but when he runs away from home he goes south into the Southern parts of the continent. There’s a continuum of cultures, but North/South is a somewhat salient historical/cultural/political/etc divide. In Northern cultures lying is not super taboo, you shouldn’t make a habit of it but it’s okay to play fast-and-loose with the truth, while in the South, lying to people is one of the worst things you can do – omission of information is okay, but deceiving someone is possibly a worse transgression than murder, depending on where you are.

That explanation aside, Mats has very few compunctions about lying, he’s not a compulsive liar but he’ll do it if he needs to, which definitely gets him into hot water in the South. He has a lot of things to hide and he’s also a trickster/strategist sort of character later in the war, so he’s certainly not the Southern model of honesty, and that creates complications when he's trying to enlist the help of Southern groups.

Subject to change because I haven’t fully planned everything out, but as things stand, I think the worst thing he sees happen is Mats murdering his own (Mats’) family, which is possibly one of the worst things to happen in the story overall (Mats does not do this intentionally, but it is also enough of his fault for him to carry that guilt with him for the rest of his life). But also, Ander is literally starting a decolonial continental war with Mats of all people, so needless to say he is witness to far more violence than he deserves (he's my babygirl so the amount of violence he deserves to witness is None in my book).

I suspect that Hamide would be interested in it but would be far too autistic to actually pay attention or get invested, and would instead be much better at occupying herself for an entire afternoon making up her own alternate version of the game involving all kinds of complex storylines that are completely inaccessible to everyone else around her. This is, in fact, how she plays chess with an entire fricking continent, so y’know. (Fun fact, an older version of Hamide was very into a Southern Continent version of solitaire because I was writing this in Pandemic Gap Year and obsessively playing like ten games of solitaire every day with my lunch, so it worked its way in there, and was very similar actually to just taking a chess set and playing chess with yourself.)

Ever since you were a child your mother made it very clear that you had to be very feminine to be considered a part of her family. She made sure you never wore anything but dresses and skirts. When your puberty started showing she visibly expressed her anger about your body hair. You never understood why it was a feminine trait to have no body hair, but since you thought you couldn’t argue, you listened to her.

As you grew older you started to refuse the idea of needing to be feminine, but the need to shave everywhere stuck with you. You never understood why that was the thing that you hated about yourself.

One unfortunate day you went camping with Simon. You may ask why it was so unfortunate and although you avoided him at all costs it definitely wasn’t because of him. It was hard to avoid him when you literally had to sleep in a cramped tent next to him. He wondered why you acted as if you didn’t want him around. He thought he did something wrong, but he couldn’t figure out what.

He tried to fix things by doing the thing you both loved, cuddling. He was lying on his back and you were on your side, turned away from him. He turned to a position where he could spoon you and slid his arm around your waist. With no reaction from you, he thought he did good. You weren’t trying to get away from him and he saw it as a positive sign.

He put his other hand on your arm so he could caress you. You immediately flinched away from him and that was the moment he decided to speak up. “You’ve gotta stop with this nonsense and tell me what’s wrong.” He said with a slightly angry tone.

You sheepishly told him about your problems.
